The effects of CCC and B 9 on the growth habit of potato differed between varieties. CCC diminished stem lengths and dry weight more than Bo because CCC was applied early when shoots emerged from the soil, but B 9 was applied about 3 weeks later when several leaves had formed. In some varieties lateral stem growth was increased by treatment and in others decreased. There was an inverse relation between main stem and lateral stem growth so that varieties with vigorous main stem growth had poor lateral growth and vice-versa. Treatment with the growth-regulators diminished leaf dry weight of main stem leaves less than leaf area, but the degree of magnitudes of the changes depended on the variety. Both regulators lessened net assimilation rate. Net assimilation rate and dry matter per unit area of leaf were inversely related, possibly because accumulation of substances in leaves decreases photosynthesis. Stolon dry weight was positively correlated with main stem leaf area. There was a direct relation between stem length and tuber dry weight, suggesting that tuber initiation occurs at different stem lengths in different varieties. Tubering was earliest in Epicure and latest in King Edward. Epicure had the greatest tuber weight and smallest stem length.  相似文献

When CCC was applied as a spray to the leaves of Brassica oleraceaL. (Brussels sprout) grown in pots, plant height and mean internodelength were reduced. The effects appeared more slowly and wereless pronounced than those previously observed when CCC hadbeen applied to the soil; other differences were that root growthwas not inhibited, stem weight was only significantly reducedat the highest rate of application (2 per cent), and stomatalnumber per unit area of lower leaf epidermis was not affected. In common with soil applications, leaf thickness, stem diameter, and the percentage moisture contents of the leaves were allincreased by foliar applications. In a further experiment theprogress of wilting was observed in untreated plants and inplants treated with CCC applied either to the leaves or to thesoil. The rates of water loss and the moisture contents of theleaf laminae of the treated plants, after a period of wilting, were not significantly different from the controls. The treatedplants, however, looked less ‘wilted‘ for the changein angle of the leaf lamina to the stem was less and their leaveswere therefore held more upright.  相似文献

Recent investigations have demonstrated that the growth retardant, (2-chloroethyl) trimethyl-ammonium chloride (CCC) inhibits several aspects of vegetative growth. In solution culture experiments, reduction in plant growth and dry matter production was confirmed in cowpeas, Vigna unguiculata L, (cv. Makueni II), when treated with CCC. The growth retardant had negligible effect on the rate of transpiration per unit leaf area although it slightly increased the relative water content of leaves. Stomatal opening was suppressed by CCC treatment but the number of stomata per unit leaf area was increased by the growth retardant. Variations in mineral element content (K, Ca, N and Na) of shoots are presented and discussed in relation to CCC treatment.  相似文献

In experiments with spring and winter wheat at Rothamsted and Woburn during 4 years CCC increased yield at close spacing (4 in) (10 cm) more than at usual spacing (8 in) (20 cm), but there was no interaction between spacing and yield. Some experiments tested up to 2·4 cwt/acre (300 kg/ha) N to see whether yields continued to increase with more than usual amounts of N, when CCC prevented lodging. There was no evidence of this. When a short dry spell occurred at ear emergence, yield of spring wheat was increased by 6 cwt/acre (750 kg/ha) by CCC and 10 cwt (1250 kg) by irrigation. CCC probably improves yield in these conditions because the larger root system it causes enables more ear-bearing shoots to survive. CCC increases yield in two ways, either by increasing ears or grain per ear. In an unlodged crop CCC usually makes the grains smaller, but by preventing lodging it can also increase size. Usually CCC decreases the leaf area per shoot. The flag leaf may be smaller, unchanged or larger than those of untreated plants. There was no obvious connexion between flag-leaf area and grain yield; when CCC decreased flag-leaf area duration by 25 %, grain yield was unchanged. The results suggest that using CCC gives a more than even chance of a profitable yield increase.  相似文献

The effect of 30 % defoliation of shaded leaves in lower layers of plant was studied on activities of carbonic anhydrase (CA) and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPC), leaf dry mass per unit leaf area, and plant dry mass of mustard (Brassica juncea). Removal of 30 % of leaves resulted in increased CA and RuBPC activities of leaves, and leaf and plant dry masses.  相似文献

Summary The numbers of cells and area of fully expanded leaves were determined on successive leaves of Sinapis alba grown either in 8 hr. photoperiod (vegetative plants) or 16 hr. photoperiod (flowering plants) at a constant temperature of 20°C. In the 8 hr. photoperiod leaf 9 had the greatest area but leaf 12 had most cells. In 16 hr. photperiod leaf 5 had the greatest area but leaf 9 had most cells. The relationship between area and cell number of successive leaves on the main stem fell into 3 distinct phases: in phase (1), cell number increased at a greater rate than leaf area; in phase (2), leaf area decreased while cell number increased; in phase (3), cell number and leaf area decreased proportionally. For an increase in unit area, cell number increased more in 8 hr. than in 16 hr. photoperiod.Using final area and final cell number of successive leaves, by extrapolation the cell number of unit area of primordium has been deduced. Cell number per unit area increased in successive primordia up to a certain node after which it remained constant at succeeding nodes. It was found that in plants grown under different conditions the cell number per unit area in successive primordia increased at a constant logarithmic rate. That is, cells became progressively smaller. It is concluded that changes in cell size of successive primordia are not influenced by the environment but are under internal control.  相似文献

Plants of Callistephus chinensis were grown in eight hours ofdaylight per day and received either uninterrupted dark periodsor dark periods interrupted by one hour of low-intensity light. The growth in area and the accumulation of dry matter was followedfor leaves at different heights of insertion on the stem. Lightinterruption treatment caused more rapid surface expansion ofindividual leaves. The rate of accumulation of dry matter wasalso increased but less in proportion to the increase in areaso that the area per unit weight of leaf material, i.e. thespecific leaf area, was greater. The final areas and dry weightsof leaves were also considerably greater than in the uninterruptednight treatment. When plants were transferred from uninterruptedto interrupted nights, a similar response was obtained fromthose leaves which began to expand rapidly after the commencementof the treatment. The reciprocal transfer into uninterrupted nights immediatelyretarded the rate of leaf expansion and final leaf areas wereless. The rate of accumulation of dry matter was not affectedso rapidly and the area per unit weight of leaf material fellbelow that recorded from leaves which had always received uninterruptednights. Within any one treatment and on any one occasion thespecific leaf area was almost constant, regardless of heightof insertion and therefore also of leaf size and degree of development. It is postulated that a promotor of leaf growth is producedin the light interruption treatment and that this regulatormay increase cell expansion. Transfer to uninterrupted nightsmay halt the synthesis of this regulator and may also lead tothe production of an inhibitor of leaf expansion. Finally, it is concluded from a survey of the literature, that,in general, where a response to photoperiod exists, leaf areais greater in long days than in short days.  相似文献

Further evidence is provided that the environment of sugar-beet seedlings, or growth substances applied to seedlings, continues to influence growth when the plants are later in other environments. Sugar-beet seeds were germinated at 20 °C in 8, 16 or 24 h photoperiods of constant light intensity, i.e. with different amounts of total radiation. When the seedlings had two leaves (15–18 days old) they were transferred to large pots in the glasshouse. Some seedlings were treated with (2-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride) either sprayed on the leaves or applied to the soil, at different times. The treatments affected areas of individual leaves throughout the growing period; plants raised in 24 h photoperiod had the largest leaves, and those in 8 h photoperiod the smallest. Consequently, 24 h plants had most dry matter and 8 h plants least. Plants given most radiation produced leaves fastest and CCC applied early increased the rate, but as the leaves were smaller, except late in 1967, and died sooner, the leaf area duration was less and so yields were less. CCC applied later did not affect leaf production. There was no interaction between amount of radiation and CCC treatment. Twenty-four hour plants had the greatest net assimilation rate (E) early. CCC decreased E early, but increased it later and more when sprayed on the leaves than when applied to the soil. Some factor, possibly pot size, eventually restricted growth and probably diminished the effect of the treatments applied to the seedlings.  相似文献

Summary We examined how different wind speeds and interactions between plant age and wind affect growth and biomass allocation of Sinapis alba L. (white mustard). Physiological and growth measurements were made on individuals of white mustard grown in controlled-environment wind tunnels at windspeeds of 0.3, 2.2 and 6.0 ms–1 for 42 days. Plants were harvested at four different dates. Increasing wind speed slightly increased transpiration and stomatal conductance. We did not observe a significant decline in the photosynthetic rate per unit of leaf area. Number of leaves, stem length, leaf area and dry weights of total biomass and plant parts were significantly lower in plants exposed at high wind speed conditions. There were no significant differences in the unit leaf rate nor relative growth rates, although these were always lower in plants grown at high wind speed. Allocation and architectural parameters were also examined. After 42 days of exposure to wind, plants showed higher leaf area ratio, root and leaf weight ratios and root/shoot ratio than those grown at control treatment. Only specific leaf area declined significantly with wind speed, but stem and reproductive parts also decreased. The responses of plants to each wind speed treatment depended on the age of the plant for most of the variables. It is suggested that wind operates in logarithmic manner, with relatively small or no effect at lower wind speeds and a much greater effect at higher speeds. Since there is no evidence of a significant reduction in photosynthetic rate of Sinapis with increasing wind speed it is suggested that the effect of wind on plant growth was due to mechanical effects leading to changes in allocation and developmental patterns.  相似文献

Volatile communication between barley plants affects biomass allocation   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Patterns of biomass allocation between different plant organs have often been used to explain the response of plants to variations in resource availability. This paper reports how aerial allelopathy (plant-plant communication) affects biomass allocation, that is the trade-off between root, stem and leaves, and also relative growth rate (RGR, increase in biomass per unit biomass per unit of time, mg g-1 d-1) and its components. Based on previous experiments, communication between two barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars (Alva and Kara) was used for the present study. Kara exposed to volatiles from Alva allocated significantly more biomass to roots compared with Kara exposed to volatiles from Kara or to clean air. There was no significant difference between plants of Kara exposed to volatiles from Kara and those exposed to clean air. Changes in total dry weight (TDW), RGR and unit leaf rate (ULR, increase in biomass per unit time and leaf area, kg m-2 d-1) were not significantly affected by plant-plant communication. However, there was a significant increase in specific leaf area (SLA, leaf area per leaf dry weight, m2 kg-1) in Kara when exposed to volatiles from Alva. The results show that aerial plant-plant communication does not affect total biomass production but does significantly affect biomass allocation in individual plants. There may be differences in the volatile profiles of Kara and Alva that induce increased biomass allocation to roots in the Kara plants exposed to volatiles from Alva.  相似文献

Idiospermum australiense (Diels) S. T. Blake, is a rare species that produces very large diaspores (up to 225 g) comprising 2–6 cotyledons. Anecdotal evidence suggested that each cotyledon within the diaspore could develop an independent root/shoot axis in natural populations and under glasshouse conditions. To investigate this potential, 13 diaspores were collected. Six diaspores were kept intact and cotyledons in the remaining seven were separated, planted into soil and scored for germination. All shoots were allowed to grow for 12 weeks. To test for differences in growth response from seedlings emerging from intact diaspores and single cotyledons, plant height, shoot mass, stem mass, leaf mass and total leaf area were compared between groups using both absolute values and values standardized to initial reserve mass. To examine the effects of reserve mass in more detail, height to stem mass, leaf mass to stem mass and specific leaf area was also compared between groups. All intact cotyledons and 24 of the 27 single cotyledons produced a functional root/shoot system. Time to germination was not different between groups. Shoot mass, stem mass and leaf mass were significantly greater in intact diaspores than in single cotyledons, although no difference was found in any parameter when standardized to initial reserve mass. Shoots arising from individual cotyledons were significantly taller per gram initial weight, because of a significantly greater relationship between height and stem mass. Shoots arising from single cotyledons also had a significantly greater investment in leaf mass per unit stem mass, even though there was no difference in specific leaf area between groups. Thus, seedlings arising from individual cotyledons grew relatively taller and produced a greater area of leaf tissue relative to stem than those arising from intact diaspores.  相似文献

The effect of gibberellic acid, CCC (2-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride) and B 9 (N-dimethylaminosuccinamic acid) was studied on growth of potato plants in pots. Growth was analysed on four occasions and changes in habit defined in terms of internode lengths, leaf areas and growth of lateral branches. Soaking seed pieces for 1 hr. in GA solution caused six internodes to elongate greatly, an effect not prevented by CCC applied when the shoot emerged from the soil. The effects on internode extension were determined by the length of the interval between GA treatment and CCC treatment. Treatment at emergence with CCC shortened all internodes and more CCC applied 4 weeks later had no effect. Late application of CCC or B9 shortened the top two lateral branches, usually very long in untreated plants. The regulators affected leaf growth differently from internode growth: usually growth regulators had less effect on leaf growth. Effects on growth depended on when the regulators were applied. Treatment with GA alone inhibited bud development at higher nodes than in untreated plants; when followed by late treatment with CCC, lateral growth at higher nodes was also less. CCC retarded development of lateral branches especially when applied early. B9 had a similar effect to CCC applied late. When regulators retarded growth of lower laterals, upper laterals often grew more than in untreated plants. Treatments did not affect the number of leaves on the main stem at first but later GA hastened senescence. GA increased the number of leaves on lateral stems, and the effect was enhanced by CCC. CCC alone increased the number of first- and second-order lateral leaves. GA lengthened and CCC shortened stolons. The effect of CCC persisted throughout the life of the plant. CCC or B 9 shortened stolons whenever applied. CCC hastened tuber initiation but slowed tuber growth. CCC at first retarded formation of lateral tubers but had no effect on the ultimate numbers of lateral and terminal tubers. The value of E (net assimilation rate) did not alter with time. CCC applied at emergence increased E, probably because it hastened tuber initiation and temporarily increased sink capacity. Although tubers formed earlier with CCC, their growth was slower and their demand for carbohydrate was also less. The increase in second-order laterals in CCC-treated plants indicates that they utilize carbohydrate that would normally go to tubers. This experiment also demonstrates that crowding leaves by shortening stems did not diminish E, possibly because another over-riding process (bigger sinks) offsets the effect of shading.  相似文献

Heterobaric leaves show heterogeneous pigmentation due to the occurrence of a network of transparent areas that are created from the bundle sheaths extensions (BSEs). Image analysis showed that the percentage of photosynthetically active leaf area (Ap) of the heterobaric leaves of 31 plant species was species dependent, ranging from 91% in Malva sylvestris to only 48% in Gynerium sp. Although a significant portion of the leaf surface does not correspond to photosynthetic tissue, the photosynthetic capacity of these leaves, expressed per unit of projected area (Pmax), was not considerably affected by the size of their transparent leaf area (At). This means that the photosynthetic capacity expressed per Ap (P*max) should increase with At. Moreover, the expression of P*max could be allowing the interpretation of the photosynthetic performance in relation to some critical anatomical traits. The P*max, irrespective of plant species, correlated with the specific leaf transparent volume (lambda(t)), as well as with the transparent leaf area complexity factor ((CF)A(t)), parameters indicating the volume per unit leaf area and length/density of the transparent tissues, respectively. Moreover, both parameters increased exponentially with leaf thickness, suggesting an essential functional role of BSEs mainly in thick leaves. The results of the present study suggest that although the Ap of an heterobaric leaf is reduced, the photosynthetic performance of each areole is increased, possibly due to the light transferring capacity of BSEs. This mechanism may allow a significant increase in leaf thickness and a consequent increase of the photosynthetic capacity per unit (projected) area, offering adaptive advantages in xerothermic environments.  相似文献

Numbers of mesophyll cells per unit leaf area decreased progressivelyfrom an upper leaf with a width of 3 cm towards the lower leaves.Enlargement of mesophyll cell size with leaf order accountedfor an increase or maintenance of mesophyll cell surface areaper unit leaf area. Increase of photosynthetic rates was correlatedwith increases of mesophyll cell surface area and nitrogen contentper unit leaf area. Therefore, in spite of an increase in cellsurface area to volume ratio with increase of mesophyll cellsize, it appears that increase of mesophyll cell surface areaand nitrogen content per unit leaf area enables a high rateof photosynthesis to be maintained. Field experiments were conducted in 1987 and 1988 to quantify differences in canopy formation between an indeterminate and a determinate genotype of Vicia faba L., grown at two plant densities and three spatial distributions. The number of stems per unit area produced by determinate plants was related to the growth rate before flowering. Leaf production per stem per unit of thermal time was similar in both plant types, but twice as many leaves per stem were produced by the indeterminate cultivar. The indeterminate cultivar produced fewer and smaller leaves in the warmer and drier weather of 1988 than in 1987. The determinate genotype produced similar sizes and numbers of leaves in both years, but fewer tillers developed in 1988 than in 1987. Accordingly, leaf mass per unit ground area was greater in 1987 than in 1988 in both genotypes. Except during early flowering, relationships between leaf mass and leaf area were constant, with higher specific leaf areas in the determinate than the indeterminate genotype. Shoot dry matter partitioning into leaves was identical in both years for indeterminate plants, but differed in determinate ones.
It is concluded that canopy development is regulated through individual leaf weight and leaf number per stem in non-tillering indeterminate, and by stem numbers per unit area in tillering determinate plants.

Effects of Nitrogen Fertilizer on Growth and Yield of Spring Wheat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Nine amounts of nitrogen fertilizer, ranging from 0 to 200 kgN ha–1, were applied to spring wheat cv. Kleiber in the3 years 1972-1974. In 1972 grain dry weight with 125 kg N ha–1or more was 100 g m–2 (23 per cent) greater than withoutnitrogen. Grain yield was unaffected by nitrogen in the otheryears. Leaf area at and after anthesis was increased throughoutthe range of nitrogen tested, most in 1972 and least in 1973.Consequently, the addition of 200 kg N ha–1 decreasedthe amount of grain produced per unit of leaf area by approximately25 per cent in all years. The dry weight of leaves and stems at anthesis and maturitywas increased by nitrogen in all years, similarly to leaf area. However, the change in stem dry weight between anthesis andmaturity was not affected by nitrogen; stems increased in dryweight for about 20 days after anthesis and then decreased tovalues similar to those at anthesis. The uptake of CO2 per unit area of flag leaf or second leaf(leaf below the flag leaf) was slightly decreased by nitrogenwhen the increase in leaf area caused by nitrogen appreciablydecreased the light intensity at the surface of these leaves. In spite of such decreases the CO2 absorbed by flag and secondleaves per unit area of land was always increased by nitrogen, and relatively more than was grain yield. It is suggested that increases in respiratory loss of CO2 withincreasing nitrogen fertilizer may explain why nitrogen increasedvegetative growth and leaf area relatively more than grain yield.  相似文献

Spraying potato plants with a solution of gibberellic acid (GA)when the 15th leaf was emerging increased the area of this leafand its total gibberellin content, assayed by dwarf French beanleaf disks. GA, assayed by lettuce hypocotyls, was not detectedin leaves from untreated plants. The GA content of leaves fromGA-treated plants decreased after 2 weeks and none was detectableafter 5 weeks; apparently it was converted to another gibberellin, possibly the same as the natural gibberellin. GA increased chlorophyllcontent per leaf but increased leaf area more so that the chlorophyllper unit area decreased, and the leaves were paler than untreatedleaves.  相似文献

CCC (2-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride) decreased growth of primary leaves and stem internodes above the hypocotyl of dwarf French bean, probably because it decreased the amount of auxin produced by interaction between tryptophan and phenolic esters in the primary leaves. Growth of leaves was less affected than that of stems, and the gibberellin content of the primary leaves, previously shown to be associated with their expansion, was unaffected by CCC. CCC delayed death of the primary leaves, the breakdown of chlorophyll, and the increase in auxin associated with death of bean leaves. CCC had less effect on the growth of leaf discs, probably because they are not sites of growth-substance production. Glycine betaine, a quaternary ammonium compound similar to CCC, did not affect growth of bean plants, their metabolism of growth substances or the longevity of their primary leaves, but inhibited growth of leaf discs, probably directly.  相似文献
