Glass eels migrating upstream in a New Zealand river showed a clear preference for water temperatures between 12 and 20°C, with an optimum of 16.5°C. Water temperatures <12°C and >22°C almost completely inhibited migration, which implies that warmer temperatures associated with global climate change might have a detrimental impact on glass eel recruitment in their current ranges. We established this by trapping glass eels of shortfin, Anguilla australis, and longfin, A. dieffenbachii, eels nightly from September to November. Eels caught in 2001 (50,287) outnumbered those caught in 2002 (19,954); shortfin glass eels dominated catches in both years, comprising 91–93% of the catch. Longfins were larger than shortfins, and size and pigmentation in both species increased as the seasons progressed. Temperatures within the migratory season in 2001 showed ∼14-day intervals between maxima that appeared to be associated with the new and full moons.  相似文献

Many aspects of the life histories of anguillid eels have been revealed in recent decades, but the spawning migrations of their silver eels in the open ocean still remains poorly understood. This paper overviews what is known about the migration and spawning of anguillid species in the ocean. The factors that determine exactly when anguillid eels will begin their migrations are not known, although environmental influences such as lunar cycle, rainfall and river discharge seem to affect their patterns of movement as they migrate towards the ocean. Once in the ocean on their way to the spawning area, silver eels probably migrate in the upper few hundred metres, while reproductive maturation continues. Although involvement of a magnetic sense or olfactory cues seems probable, how they navigate or what routes they take are still a matter of speculation. There are few landmarks in the open ocean to define their spawning areas, other than oceanographic or geological features such as oceanic fronts or seamounts in some cases. Spawning of silver eels in the ocean has never been observed, but artificially matured eels of several species have exhibited similar spawning behaviours in the laboratory. Recent collections of mature adults and newly spawned preleptocephali in the spawning area of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica have shown that spawning occurs during new moon periods in the North Equatorial Current region near the West Mariana Ridge. These data, however, show that the latitude of the spawning events can change among months and years depending on oceanographic conditions. Changes in spawning location of this and other anguillid species may affect their larval transport and survival, and appear to have the potential to influence recruitment success. A greater understanding of the spawning migration and the choice of spawning locations by silver eels is needed to help conserve declining anguillid species.  相似文献

The existence of distinct patterns of activity and swimming behaviour were tested in individual European glass eels by means of Bayesian inference mixture modelling. 36 glass eels were tagged using Visible Implant Elastomer and added to 36 untagged glass eels in February and April. Each group was presented with a change in water current direction every 6,2 h and videotaped during 2 weeks. Two hypotheses were tested: (i) all individuals display a similar pattern of behaviour within a tidal period, glass eels showing both positive and negative rheotaxis in opposite phase (M1 model) and (ii) individuals are distributed in two different groups, some glass eels swimming with and the others against the current (M2 model). Results showed that most glass eels displayed a positive or a negative rheotaxis and only a small number exhibited both behaviours. All swimming behaviours were synchronised to a change in current direction with a period close to the tidal one. Results are discussed in relation to synchronisation and migration behaviour.  相似文献

Glass eel ( Anguilla anguilla ) upstream migration was studied in the River Tiber estuary to obtain a better understanding of spatial and temporal migration dynamics within the season of ascent. Using data from glass eel fisheries, time series analysis of daily catches per unit of effort revealed a fortnightly cycle that can be related to invasion waves possibly corresponding to tidal currents. The amplitude of these waves appeared to correspond to the tidal area of the estuary. Furthermore, glass eels apparently had a delay in this area before resuming upstream migration.  相似文献

Synchronisation of swimming activity to water current reversal every 6.2 h was tested in the European glass eel (Anguilla anguilla L.). When presented with a change in water current direction, glass eels exhibited rhythmic patterns of activity with a period close to the tidal one. Glass eels began to swim with the current and then alternated between positive and negative rheotaxis after each change in the water current direction. Results are discussed in relation to the flood tidal transport theory. Following synchronisation to current reversal, glass eels subjected to constant conditions displayed a weak rhythmic activity suggesting that locomotor behaviour might, in the wild, synchronise to several environmental cues related to the tide. Results obtained with different densities also suggest that social cues might improve the synchronisation.  相似文献

The present study evaluated the effect of the glass eel fishery on by-catch ichthyofauna in the Ebro River delta by investigating the primary responsible factors of discard mortality, in order to assess the adequacy of fishing and sorting procedures, and assess the ecological impact of this traditional activity. Results revealed that glass eel fishery had a negative impact on by-catch ichthyofauna mainly composed of mugilid fry and small-size estuarine species. Data showed that between 10 and 69% of incidental species died as a consequence of glass eel capture and sorting procedures. Differences in by-catch fish mortality rates depended on the glass eel sorting time, the total weight of catch, the discard ratio, by-catch fish size, and by-catch fish species composition. The total weight of the catch and the discard ratio were two of the main parameters affecting discarded fish mortality, since both had a direct effect on the period of time required for glass eel sorting during which by-catch fish were exposed to air and suffered from very aggressive sorting procedures that caused severe external and internal injuries. By-catch fish measuring less than 40 mm L T were more susceptible to glass eel fishery procedures than those larger (>60 mm L T), independent of the species considered or their stage of development. This fishery, similar to other ones, should strive to minimization the amount of discards and the mortality of discarded fish, by improving the selectivity of the fish trap and developing new sorting and selection procedures. The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a catadromous fish that spawns in the Sargasso Sea. As larvae, eels cross the Atlantic Ocean and reach the continental slope of Europe, where they metamorphose into post‐larval glass eels. These reach the continent, where some enter fresh water, some remain in marine waters, and others move between fresh and marine waters. After 5–25 years, as adult silver eels, they migrate back from fresh water to the Sargasso Sea to spawn and die. The glass eel stage is a critical step during which the eels cross the continental shelf and recruit to estuaries, where they facultatively transition to fresh water. Extensive research has been conducted to understand the behavioural mechanisms and environmental cues that aid and guide glass eels' migration. Glass eels follow odours and salinity gradients, they avoid light, and they change orientation and depth according to the tides. Recent work revealed that European glass eels also use Earth's magnetic field and lunar cues to orient. However, while we understand many aspects of their orientation behaviour, a unifying theory describing how glass eels migrate from the continental slope to fresh water is lacking. The goal of this review is to develop a comprehensive hypothesis on the migration of European glass eels, integrating previous knowledge on their orientation behaviour with recent findings on magnetic and celestial orientation. This review follows the journey of a hypothetical glass eel, describing the nature and the role of orientation cues involved at each step. I propose that, although glass eels have the sensory capacity to use multiple cues at any given time, their migration is based on a hierarchical succession of orientation mechanisms dictated by the physical properties of the environments that they occupy: (i) lunar and magnetic cues in pelagic water; (ii) chemical and magnetic cues in coastal areas; and (iii) odours, salinity, water current and magnetic cues in estuaries.  相似文献

The timing of catches of anguillid glass eels and their otolith microstructure and microchemistry were studied in southwest Iceland, where the European eel, Anguilla anguilla and American eel, A. rostrata have been thought to live sympatrically, to learn about their early life history and the possible mechanism of the separation between these two species ranges. Catches at the site studied suggest that glass eels may have started upstream migration as the river temperature warmed in late June and early July. The glass eels were mitochondrially identified into two species, A. anguilla and A. rostrata, although the latter were likely hybrids between the two species based on a different study. Otolith analyses showed no sharp increases in otolith increment width or sharp decrease of otolith Sr:Ca ratio in either species, which are the characteristic changes corresponding to the onset of metamorphosis in many anguillid species including A. rostrata collected in North America and A. anguilla in Europe. The mean age at recruitment determined for the glass eels in Iceland were similar between the two species (336.6 ± 41.7 and 319.3 ± 36.0 days for A. anguilla and A. rostrata, respectively), as were their total lengths (range 58.0–78.5 mm and 58.5–73.0 mm). In addition, mean age at metamorphosis (278.0 ± 36.8 and 254.0 ± 47.7 days) and total age (372.3 ± 50.8 and 352.9 ± 42.6 days) were also similar between the two species. However, these ages of A. rostrata in Iceland were older than those in North America, and those of A. anguilla collected in Iceland were roughly intermediate between the rest of Europe and North Africa. These findings support the hypothesis that the timing of metamorphosis is a key factor for determining the place of recruitment of glass eels and maintaining the geographic separation between the two species.  相似文献

In this study we test which environmental factors are influencing the migratory behaviour of seaward migrating silver European eets Anguilla anguilla in a Norwegian river. We test this by transplanting tagged silver eels upriver after catching them in a trap at the outlet of the river. We did this at four fixed dates (fixed day lengths) during 5 years. Over 74% of the variation in time from release to subsequent recapture could be accounted for by variation in time at release, water discharge at release, and moon phase at release (in decreasing order of importance). The number of days to median day of recapture of each batch decreased as the season progressed and decreased with increasing water discharge. Water temperature did not explain any of the remaining variation in the model, even if there was a significant correlation between water temperature at release and median day at recapture of each batch (in simple linear regression model). Recapture rate during the same migration season varied strongly with water temperature, but at most 33% of the variation could be explained by this factor. It was aiso evident that the recapture rate increased when the number of downward migrating untagged silver eels was high. Day length (i.e. time at release) did not explain any of the remaining variation in recapture rate.  相似文献

Renal function was observed in freshwater North American eels (Anguilla rostrata LeSueur) 2 weeks after the removal of the corpuscles of Stannius. There was a positive linear correlation between glomerular filtration rates and urine flow rates in both sham-operated and stanniectomized eels but there was no difference in slope or elevation between the two groups nor did urine flow rates ever exceed glomerular filtration rates. Osmolar clearance and free-water clearance were unchanged following stanniectomy. Plasma Ca2+ and K+ concentrations increased and plasma Mg2+, phosphate, Na+ and Cl- concentrations decreased following stanniectomy. Plasma ultrafilterable Ca increased and ultrafilterable Mg decreased after stanniectomy but neither changed relative to its total plasma concentration. Stanniectomy was followed by a decreased renal tubular reabsorption of Mg2+ relative to the amount filtered (C Mg/C In); the same applies to C Na/C In. Even though the filtered load of Ca increased in conjuction with the predictable hypercalcemia, there was no change in the fraction of filtered Ca reabsorbed. Net tubular secretion of phosphate was observed in both sham-operated and stanniectomized cels together with a slight increase in C phos/C In following stanniectomy. Age and growth of Anguilla japonica sampled from the Qiulu River in southern China were studied. Mean body lengths and weights of the eels at each age were back-calculated from their otoliths. The growth parameters for the von Bertalanffy function gave L = 98–2cm, K =0·07 and t 0=− 1·94. Scales were observed to form firstly at the middle part of the lateral line, at a minimum body length of 160 mm and were inappropriate for ageing.  相似文献

The timing of Anguilla spp. glass eel recruitment into the Waikato River, North Island, New Zealand, was studied over a 2 year period (2004–2005). While glass eels of both the shortfin eel Anguilla australis and the endemic longfin eel Anguilla dieffenbachii were caught, the former comprised >97% of the species composition. There was a positive correlation of glass eel migrations with spring tides, with peak migration periods typically occurring within a few hours of the peak of high tide, and between 2 and 4 days after the day of spring tide. Both water temperature and discharge had significant inverse relationships with glass eel catches, with temperature explaining >30% of the variance in catch periodicity. Comparison of catch data 30 years apart showed that main migration periods appear to occur several weeks earlier today than previously. Reduced catch per unit effort and duration of runs from recent years' sampling (compared with the 1970s) indicate that a reduction in recruitment may also have occurred during this period, something recorded in other temperate species of Anguilla .  相似文献

In fall 1997, the toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa was documented in Lake Sammamish (western Washington, U.S.A.) for the first time. Cyanobacterial activity and environmental conditions that may promote toxic cyanobacteria were investigated during summer and fall 1999. Development of toxic Microcystis was hypothesized to be due to runoff of nutrients from the watershed (external loading hypothesis) or from vertical migration of dormant cyanobacteria from the nutrient-rich sediments into the water column (cyanobacterial migration hypothesis). Microcystins were detected using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay during late August and early September 1999 despite low cyanobacterial abundance. Microcystin concentrations ranged between 0.19–3.8 g l–1 throughout the lake and at all depths with the exception of the boat launch where concentrations reached 43 g l–1. Comparison of the conditions associated with the toxic episodes in 1997 and 1999 indicate that Microcystis is associated with a stable water column, increased surface total phosphorus concentrations (> 10 g l–1), surface temperatures greater than 22°C, high total nitrogen to phosphorus ratios (> 30), and increased water column transparency (up to 5.5 m). Migration of the cyanobacteria, Microcystis and Anabaena, occurred in both the deep and shallow portions of the lake. Microcystis dominated (89–99%) the migrating cyanobacteria with greater migration from the shallow station. External loading of nutrients due to the large rainfall preceding the 1997 toxic episode may have provided the nutrients needed to fuel that bloom. However, toxic Microcystis occurred in 1999 despite the lack of rain and subsequent external runoff. The migration of Microcystis from the nutrient-rich sediments may have been the inoculum for the toxic population detected in 1999.  相似文献

Fish movements between aquatic habitats of different salinity ranges (fresh, estuarine, marine) by the tropical catadromous eels Anguilla bicolor bicolor and A. bicolor pacifica were examined by analysing the otolith strontium and calcium concentrations of yellow (immature) and silver (mature) stage eels collected in south-east Asian (Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam) waters. The ratios suggest that all migratory-type eels, including freshwater, brackish water and marine residents, pass the river mouth. However, the habitat preference was different among the sites (countries). In Indonesia and Vietnam, most A. bicolor bicolor and A. bicolor pacifica were either marine or brackish water residents in this study. Alternatively, most A. bicolor bicolor were freshwater residents in Malaysia; such a typical catadromous migration pattern in these eels has not been found in previous studies. The wide range of otolith Sr:Ca in both subspecies indicates that the habitat use of these tropical eels was opportunistic among fresh, brackish and marine waters during their growth phases following recruitment to coastal areas. The geographical variability of migratory histories suggests that habitat use might be determined by the inter and intraspecific competition and environmental conditions at each site.  相似文献

Studies were conducted during 1991–1993 on environmental factors affecting the upstream migration of eels in the Rivers Severn and Avon, England. Migrants (> 156 000 pigmented elvers and > 189 000 juveniles) were trapped as they attempted to ascend weir or sluice barriers. Multiple regression models were developed to compare catches per trap per night (C) with data for various key environmental parameters at seven sites, from the tidal limit to a maximum of 42.5 km upstream. The key stimulus for migration of both elvers and juveniles at the tidal limit was water temperature, with some weaker monthly influences related to seasonal temperature increases. Smaller annual influences probably related to earlier glass eel recruitment into the lower estuary. A weak early tidal effect was demonstrated only once, in 1993 in the Severn. Temperature also exerted significant effects on C of juvenile eels at the tidal limit and in the non-tidal rivers, although effects weakened with distance upstream. Year, month, river flows and whether traps were mounted on weirs or sluices made only small contributions at a few sites. Distance between traps also contributed to combined data for upper Severn sites. The threshold temperature in all cases was 14–16°C, with low to zero catches below 10–11°C, catch maxima being achieved above 18–20°C. The implications of strong temperature-dependence of migration in relation to stock recruitment and management are discussed. Special reference is made to recent decreases in recruitment of eels to Europe and N. America and possible long-term effects of global warming.  相似文献

Most fish populations are declining worldwide and their management would benefit from a better estimation of recruitment. In glass eels, field studies suggest that estuarine migratory glass eels are sensitive enough to light to change their vertical location according to factors such as water turbidity and/or moon brightness. The response of glass eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) to light was tested in the laboratory using boxes where fish could choose between a lit and an unlit side. Responses were quantified as the proportion of glass eels remaining in the unlit chamber. Decreasing light levels were used and tested on different “age” glass eels (“age” in days since capture). In addition, measures of light at different depths of the water column were carried out in the Adour estuary (43°30′ N, 1°30′ W). The glass eel light avoidance level was lower in non-pigmented glass eel (less than 10 − 10 W cm − 2), than in pigmented ones (10 −9-10 − 8 W cm − 2). These results and field data on the measurement of light energy in the water column of Adour estuary are compared with previously published data on the estuarine migration of glass eel.  相似文献

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) is distributed in coastal and inland habitats all over Europe, but spawns in the Sargasso Sea and is thus affected by both continental and oceanic factors. Since the 1980s a steady decline has been observed in the recruitment of glass eels to freshwater and in total eel landings. The eel is considered as critically endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources Red List of species. The Skagerrak beach seine survey from Norway constitutes the longest fishery-independent dataset on yellow/silver eels (starting in 1904). The Skagerrak coastal region receives larvae born in the Sargasso Sea spawning areas that have followed the Gulf Stream/North Atlantic Drift before they penetrate far into the North Sea. The Skagerrak coastal time series is therefore particularly valuable for exploring the impacts of oceanic factors on fluctuations in eel recruitment abundance. Analyses showed that Sargasso Sea surface temperature was negatively correlated with eel abundance, with a lag of 12 years revealing a cyclic and detrimental effect of high temperatures on the newly hatched larvae. The North Atlantic Oscillation index and inflow of North Atlantic water into the North Sea were negatively correlated with eel abundance, with a lag of 11 years. Increased currents towards the North Atlantic during high North Atlantic Oscillation years may send larvae into the subpolar gyre before they are ready to metamorphose and settle, resulting in low recruitment in the northern part of the distribution area for these years. The Skagerrak time series was compared with glass eel recruitment to freshwater in the Netherlands (Den Oever glass eel time series), and similar patterns were found revealing a cycle linked to changes in oceanic factors affecting glass eel recruitment. The recent decline of eels in the Skagerrak also coincided with previously documented shifts in environmental conditions of the North Sea ecosystem.  相似文献

The cholinergic agonist-induced secretion of catecholamines from chromaffin cells in the American eel, Anguilla rostrata, was assessed using a salineperfused posterior cardinal vein preparation. Direct membrane depolarization with 60 mmol·l-1 K+ caused a significant release of catecholamines (adrenaline + noradrenaline) into the perfusate which was unaffected by pre-treatment with the ganglion blocker, hexamethonium (final concentration = 10-3 mol · l-1). The nicotinic receptor agonist, 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenylpiperazinium iodide, evoked catecholamine release in response to several doses exceeding 10-7 mol; at 10-5 mol the response was abolished by pre-treatment with the ganglion blocker, hexamethonium (final concentration = 10-3 mol · l-1). The muscarinic receptor agonist, pilocarpine, did not elicit catecholamine release in response to any of the doses administered (10-8–10-4 mol). A single injection of the mixed nicotinic/muscarinic cholinoceptor agonist, carbachol (10-5 mol), caused the release of catecholamines which was abolished by pre-treatment with hexamethonium but which was unaffected by pre-treatment with the muscarinic receptor antagonist atropine (final concentration = 10-5 mol · l-1).
