This paper discusses the Brazilian Supreme Court ruling on the case of anencephaly. In Brazil, abortion is a crime against the life of a fetus, and selective abortion of non-viable fetuses is prohibited. Following a paradigmatic case discussed by the Brazilian Supreme Court in 2004, the use of abortion was authorized in the case of a fetus with anencephaly. The objective of this paper is to analyze the ethical arguments of the case, in particular the strategy of avoiding the moral status of the fetus, the cornerstone thesis of the Catholic Church.  相似文献

The topic of abortion has been extensively researched, and the research has produced a large number of arguments and discussions. Missing in the literature, however, are discussions of practices in some areas of the Developing or Third World. In this paper, we examine the morality of sex selection abortions in Kazakhstan's Kazakh culture, and argue that such abortions can be ethically justified based, in part, on the unique perspectives of Kazakh culture.  相似文献

To determine when the life of a human organism begins, Mark T. Brown has developed the somatic integration definition of life. Derived from diagnostic criteria for human death, Brown’s account requires the presence of a life-regulation internal control system for an entity to be considered a living organism. According to Brown, the earliest point at which a developing human could satisfy this requirement is at the beginning of the fetal stage, and so the embryo is not regarded as a living human organism. This, Brown claims, has significant bioethical implications for both abortion and embryo experimentation. Here, we dispute the cogency of Brown’s derivation. Diagnostic criteria for death are used to determine when an organism irreversibly ceases functioning as an integrated whole, and may vary significantly depending on how developed the organism is. Brown’s definition is derived from a specific definition of death applicable to postnatal human beings, which is insufficient for generating a general definition for human organismal life. We have also examined the bioethical implications of Brown’s view, and have concluded that they are not as significant as he believes. Whether the embryo is classified as a human organism is of peripheral interest—a far more morally relevant question is whether the embryo is a biological individual with an identity that is capable of persisting during development.  相似文献

Many people believe that the abortion debate will end when at some point in the future it will be possible for fetuses to develop outside the womb. Ectogenesis, as this technology is called, would make possible to reconcile pro‐life and pro‐choice positions. That is because it is commonly believed that there is no right to the death of the fetus if it can be detached alive and gestated in an artificial womb. Recently Eric Mathison and Jeremy Davis defended this position, by arguing against three common arguments for a right to the death of the fetus. I claim that their arguments are mistaken. I argue that there is a right to the death of the fetus because gestating a fetus in an artificial womb when genetic parents refuse it violates their rights not to become a biological parent, their rights to genetic privacy and their property rights. The right to the death of the fetus, however, is not a woman's right but genetic parents’ collective right which only can be used together.  相似文献

Programmed cell death is the most common fate of female germ cells in Drosophila and many animals. In Drosophila, oocytes form in individual egg chambers that are supported by germline nurse cells and surrounded by somatic follicle cells. As oogenesis proceeds, 15 nurse cells die for every oocyte that is produced. In addition to this developmentally regulated cell death, groups of germ cells or entire egg chambers may be induced to undergo apoptosis in response to starvation or other insults. Recent findings suggest that these different types of cell death involve distinct genetic pathways. This review focuses on progress towards elucidating the molecular mechanisms acting during programmed cell death in Drosophila oogenesis.  相似文献

One hundred and eighty Women with a history of recurrent, unexplained spontaneous abortion (mean 3.5 abortions) were randomised to receive oral dydrogesterone (10 mg b.i.d.), intramuscular human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG; 5000 IU every 4 days) or no additional treatment (controls). Treatment was started as soon as possible after confirmation of pregnancy and continued until the 12th gestational week. All women received standard supportive care. Abortions were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) less common in the dydrogesterone group (13.4%) than in the control group (29%); there were no statistically significant differences between the hCG group and the control group. There were no differences between the groups with respect to pregnancy complications or congenital abnormalities. In conclusion, hormonal support with dydrogesterone can increase the chances of a successful pregnancy in women with a history of recurrent spontaneous abortion.  相似文献

Dydrogesterone in threatened abortion: pregnancy outcome   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether therapy with dydrogesterone in threatened abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy will improve pregnancy outcome. DESIGN: Prospective open study. SUBJECTS: Pregnant women presenting to the obstetric and gynaecology clinic admitting center with vaginal bleeding before 13 weeks gestation were evaluated for entry into the study. Women were excluded if they had a history of recurrent miscarriage. METHOD: Eligible subjects were randomized to receive either dydrogesterone 40 mg stat dose followed by 10 mg twice a day for one week or conservative therapy. RESULTS: One hundred and 54 women were recruited. There was no statistically significant differences between the two groups with regard to pre-treatment status. The continuing pregnancy success rate was significantly (p=0.037) higher in women treated with dydrogesterone (95.9%) compared with women who received conservative treatment (86.3%). The odds ratio of the success rate between dydrogesterone treatment and non-treatment was 3.773 (95% confidence interval: 1.009-14.108). CONCLUSION: Corpus luteal support with dydrogesterone has been shown to reduce the incidence of pregnancy loss in threatened abortion during the first trimester in women without a history of recurrent abortion.  相似文献

Hypothesizing that seed abortion in stenospermocarpic grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) is caused by high gibberellin levels in the seed during the first stages of its development, we studied the effect of gibberellic acid GA3 and uniconazol (a GAs biosynthesis inhibitor) on this phenomenon. In vitro germination was analyzed in the seedless cultivars Emperatriz and Perlon, which were treated with 60 and 120 mg.-l 1 uniconazol (5 and 15 days before bloom) and 100 mg.-l 1 GA3 (5 days after bloom). In addition, endogenous levels of free gibberellins in flowers and seeds of Emperatriz and Perlon were compared with their seedeed progenitor Emperador. Clusters were harvested at bloom and 20 days after bloom for gibberellin analysis and at commercial maturity for in vitro culture of the seeds. Considerable gibberellin activity was found in the three cultivars, but only small differences were detected between the seedless and the seeded genotypes. Exogenous applications of GA3 had a deleterious effect on seed growth and on in vitro germination. Uniconazol also inhibited in vitro germination, though not affecting the total number of germinating embryos plus those rescued from non-germinating seeds. In conclusion, gibberellins do not appear to be directly involved in seed abortion of the stenospermocarpic cultivars Emperatriz and Perlon, although their participation in a more complex scenario should not be rejected, taking into account that in Perlon germination rates are positively correlated with the number of clusters per plant. Treatments with growth regulators also modified berry number per cluster, berry weight and rachis morphology. Finally, the plant source was a determinant affecting germination rates in vitro.  相似文献

The death process of baculovirus-infected insect cells was divided into two phases: a constant viability (or delay) phase characterized by a delay time (t(d)) and a first-order death phase characterized by a half-life (t(1/2)). These two parameters were used in conjunction with the n-target theory to classify the kinetics of cell death under various conditions, including different multiplicity of infection (MOI), host cell lines, virus types, incubation volumes, cell density and extracellular L(+)-lactate and ammonium concentrations. Two groups of kinetic effects were found: one characterized by a constant number of hypothetical targets and the other by decreased numbers of hypothetical targets. The first group includes effects such as MOI, virus types, and host cell lines. The second includes the effects of environmental perturbations, such as incubation volume, cell density, and extracellular concentrations of L(+)-lactate and ammonium. Although the underlying mechanisms of these effects are as yet unknown, the death kinetics of infected cells significantly affects the recombinant protein production. In Brazil, abortion is only allowed in cases of rape, serious risk to a woman's life or fetal anecephaly. Legal abortion services cover less than 4% of the Brazilian territory and only 1,800 procedures are performed, in average, per year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, almost half of the already few Brazilian abortion clinics shut down and women had to travel even longer distances, reaching abortion services at later gestational ages. In this paper, we describe three bottom-up advocacy strategies that emerged from difficulties deepened during the COVID-19 pandemic at a single abortion service in Brazil, amidst anti-gender policies from the federal government. Telemedicine abortion, outpatient surgical abortion and the provision of abortion after 20 weeks' gestation are important strategies that may reduce inequalities that impact the most vulnerable populations, such as black and indigenous women, children, adolescents and women experiencing domestic violence.  相似文献

The Oceania region is home to some of the world's most restrictive abortion laws, and there is evidence of Pacific Island women's reproductive oppression across several aspects of their reproductive lives, including in relation to contraceptive decision-making, birthing, and fertility. In this paper we analyse documents from court cases in the Pacific Islands regarding the illegal procurement of abortion. We undertook inductive thematic analysis of documents from eighteen illegal abortion court cases from Pacific Island countries. Using the lens of reproductive justice, we discuss the methods of abortion, the reported context of these abortions, and the ways in which these women and abortion were constructed in judges' summing up, judgements, or sentencing. Our analysis of these cases reveals layers of sexual and reproductive oppression experienced by these women that are related to colonialism, women's socioeconomic disadvantage, gendered violence, limited reproductive control, and the punitive consequences related to not performing gender appropriately.  相似文献

The effect of baculovirus infection on cell death in suspended cultures was characterized based on work by Wu et al. (1993) Biotech. Bioeng. 41: 104–110 and Wu et al. (1994) Biotechnol. Prog. 10: 55–59. The post infection time can be separated into a constant viability phase characterized by a time delay, td, and a rapid death phase, which is characterized by a specific death rate constant, k. Results indicated that the characteristic time delay decreased with increased multiplicity on infection (MOI). Further, there was only a weak correlation between specific death rate and MOI, for the range of MOI tested. Cell infection and death rates were consistent with a more evenly distributed infection process likely found in suspension cultures.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of prone and supine sleeping in infants aged 0-12 months and relate this to changes in the number of cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) since 1985. Seventy-two babies, 38 male and 34 female, were followed for the first 18 months of life with regular home visits and sleeping position was recorded. In addition, data on the number of cases of SIDS in England and Wales between 1985 and 1995 were analysed. All babies slept supine for the first 5 months of life, but once they could turn over in their cots (mean age 7.34 months, range 5-11 months) the majority slept prone. By 11 months of age, 53 regularly slept prone (73%), 95% CI +/- 19.8%), while 11 slept supine, three adopted the side position and five varied from night to night. The number of cases of SIDS in infants aged 7-11 months has fallen significantly (P<0.0001) in a period in which the prevalence of prone sleeping, in that age group, has not changed. The most plausible explanation for this paradoxical result is that supine sleeping in the first 5 months of life reduces the absolute risk of SIDS in the second 6 months of life even though most babies are then sleeping prone. It is suggested that reduced exposure to nasopharyngeal bacterial superantigens in babies sleeping prone might explain this effect.  相似文献

In his recent article Perry Hendricks presents what he calls the impairment argument to show that abortion is immoral. To do so, he argues that to give a fetus fetal alcohol syndrome is immoral. Because killing the fetus impairs it more than giving it fetal alcohol syndrome, Hendricks concludes that killing the fetus must also be immoral. Here, I claim that killing a fetus does not impair it in the way that giving it fetal alcohol syndrome does. By examining the reason why giving a fetus this condition is wrong, I conclude that the same reasoning, on common pro‐choice accounts, does not apply to killing the fetus. Accordingly, Hendricks's argument does not succeed in showing abortion is immoral.  相似文献

Using an in vitro model that simulates the microenvironment in the ischemic infarct rim, we have examined the temporal profile and possible mechanisms of cell death in the neuropil (an astrocyte-rich area or ARA) of organotypic hippocampal slice cultures. Two-photon confocal microscopy, propidium iodide, and GFAP-GFP transgenic mice were used to confirm cell death in astrocytes. An 'ischemic solution' (IS) induced major cell death throughout the hippocampus over 24 h, with the earliest injury starting in ARA. Our studies using IS or ion replacements in IS revealed that cell death in ARA was modest when K+ was increased or pH lowered. High K+ is most effective in reducing cell death when HCO3 is normal or high. When Cl or HCO3 was reduced, cell injury was worsened. 4,4'-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid (DIDS) protected cells from IS-induced death in a dose-dependent manner (1–4000 μmol/L). We conclude that (i) various areas of the hippocampal formation respond differently to ionic replacements; (ii) K+ interacts with other ions to protect cells in ARA; and (iii) DIDS has a substantial protective effect in ARA by blocking DIDS-sensitive membrane exchangers or by interfering with intracellular signaling pathways.  相似文献

Cell death in animals is normally classified as type I (apoptotic), type II (autophagic) or necrotic. Of the biologically controlled types of death, in most embryos apoptosis is the most common, although in metamorphosis and in cells with massive cytoplasm type II is often seen, and intermediate forms are seen. For vertebrate embryos other than mammals, apoptosis is not seen prior to gastrulation but thereafter is used to sculpt the organs of the embryo, while overproduction of cells with subsequent death of excess cells is a common means of generating high specificity with low information cost. In zebrafish at least, the inability of embryos prior to the maternal-zygotic transition to undergo apoptosis appears to derive from the inability of the cells to resist lysis once apoptosis begins, rather than any inhibition of apoptosis. In mammalian embryos, apoptosis is seen during cavitation. Thereafter, as in other embryos, cell death plays a major role in shaping and sculpting the embryo. In those situations that have been carefully studied, cell death is under tight genetic control (including regulation of gene products whose function in cell death is not yet known, such as cdk5), with activation of apoptosis sometimes regulated by local environmental variables.  相似文献

Albinism remains a major problem in cereal improvement programs that rely on doubled haploid (DH) technology, and the factors controlling the phenomenon are not well understood. Here we report on the positive influence of copper on the production of DH plants obtained through microspore embryogenesis (ME) in recalcitrant cultivars of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). The presence of copper sulphate in the anther pre-treatment medium improved green DH plant regeneration from cultivars known to produce exclusively albino plants using classical procedures. In plastids, the effect of copper was characterized by a decrease in starch and a parallel increase in internal membranes. The addition of copper sulphate in the ME pre-treatment medium should enable breeders to exploit the genetic diversity of recalcitrant cultivars through DH technology. We examined programmed cell death (PCD) during microspore development to determine whether PCD may interfere with the induction of ME and/or the occurrence of albinism. By examining the fate of nuclei in various anther cell layers, we demonstrated that the kinetics of PCD in anthers differed between the barley cultivars Igri and Cork that show a low and a high rate of albinism, respectively. However, no direct correlation between PCD in the anther cell layers and the rate of albinism was observed and copper had no influence on the PCD kinetic in these cultivars. It was concluded that albinism following ME was not due to PCD in anthers, but rather to another unknown phenomenon that appears to specifically affect plastids during microspore/pollen development.  相似文献

The death of the hybridoma VO 208 in a continuous culture at pH 7 and 6.8 was investigated by measuring both the appearance of visible dead cells which do not exclude the trypan blue dye and the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in the culture medium. The intracellular LDH was found to be completely released either when live cells lysed or when they were transformed into visible dead cells. No significant lysis of blue dead cells could be observed at the two different pH. Using a LDH balance over the culture system, cell lysis was found negligible at pH 7, but accounted for 20% of the total cell death at pH 6.8. A methodology is proposed to evaluate the rate constants of hybridoma lysis and total death. During the last decades, the literature has clearly established the fundamental role of the thymus in the development of an effective immune system. During thymocyte development and maturation, potentially autoreactive thymocytes are eliminated by a process known as apoptosis or programmed cell death responsible for the negative selection occurring within the thymus. This process is in sharp contrast to other types of cell death referred to as necrosis. Actually, three different types of cell death have been recently observed morphologically in the rat thymus, i.e. necrosis, apoptosis and clustered cell death. Moreover, among the numerous factors influencing thymocyte cell death, particular attention has been paid to hormones, chemicals, biological compounds and physical agents that may influence the type and/or the extent of cell death. Finally, a brief overview has been devoted to the contribution of mitochondria, nitric oxide, glutathione and intracellular levels of cations in addition to the activity of genes as cdk2, p53, Fas and members' of the Bcl2 family in modulating rat thymus cell death.  相似文献
