Terrestrial slugs (Lehmannia valentiana) collected from a field in Osaka, southwestern Japan, were reared under long-day (16-h light and 8-h darkness, LD 16:8) or short-day conditions (LD 12:12) at 15, 20, or 25 degrees C for 60 days. Slugs reared under short-day conditions were heavier than those reared under long-day conditions; however, slugs reared at 15 degrees C gained more weight regardless of the photoperiodic condition. Gonads were significantly heavier under short-day conditions than under long-day conditions, and oogenesis and spermatogenesis were also induced under short-day conditions. Under short-day conditions, reproductive maturation was suppressed at 25 degrees C as compared with 15 and 20 degrees C, whereas under long-day conditions, lower temperatures induced reproductive maturation. In contrast, slugs reared under short-day conditions at 20 degrees C from the time of hatching gained more weight than those reared under long-day conditions at the same temperature. Moreover, short-day conditions induced reproductive maturation, similar to that observed in the field-collected slugs. In conclusion, short-day and low-temperature conditions promoted growth and reproductive maturation, whereas long-day and high-temperature conditions suppressed them in L. valentiana. Thus, L. valentiana reproduces from late autumn to spring in Osaka.  相似文献

The potential for degradation of four nitrogen-heterocyclic compounds was investigated in fresh-water sediment slurries maintained under denitrifying, sulfate-reducing, and methanogenic conditions. Pyridine (10 mg/l) was rapidly transformed within 4 weeks under denitrifying conditions but persisted for up to 3 months under sulfate-reducing and methanogenic conditions. No intermediate biotransformation products of pyridine metabolism were detected under denitrifying conditions. Quinoline (10 mg/l) was completely transformed without a lag phase under methanogenic and sulfate-reducing conditions after incubation for 23 and 45 days, respectively. 2-Hydroxyquinoline was produced concomitantly with quinoline transformation under methanogenic and sulfate-reducing conditions. Under denitrifying conditions, less than 23% of the initial concentration of quinoline was transformed after anaerobic incubation for 83 days. Indole, however, was completely removed from sediment slurries under denitrifying, sulfate-reducing, and methanogenic conditions after anaerobic incubation for 18, 27, and 17 days, respectively. Only low amounts of oxindole (2–4 mg/l) accumulated during indole metabolism under methanogenic and denitrifying conditions, but under sulfate-reducing conditions, oxindole accumulation was stoichiometric with indole transformation. No evidence for biotransformation of carbazole was noted for all anaerobic conditions tested.  相似文献

To enhance the production of hCTLA4Ig in transgenic rice suspension cell cultures, anoxic conditions were applied during the production phase. Under the anoxic conditions in sugar-depleted media, cell viability was reduced rapidly and protease activity increased compared to aerobic conditions. However, the maximum production level of hCTLA4Ig with sugar-depleted anoxic conditions was the same as that in aerobic conditions. In addition, the production of hCTLA4Ig under anoxic conditions reached a peak 2 days earlier than that in aerobic conditions. Addition of 30 mM glucose at the production phase under anoxic conditions markedly improved cell viability. A viability level over 65% could be maintained for more than 30 days. Repression of the RAmy3D promoter by residual sugar in the production of hCTLA4Ig was not observed under anoxic conditions with 30 mM glucose. In addition, the production periods of hCTLA4Ig was extended up to 30 days and the maximum production level of hCTLA4Ig under anoxic conditions was 2.1-fold higher. Therefore, anoxic conditions could be used for the enhanced production of hCTLA4Ig in transgenic rice cell cultures.  相似文献

The biodegradation of cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine, commonly known as 'high melting explosive' (HMX), under various electron-acceptor conditions was investigated using enrichment cultures developed from the anaerobic digester sludge of Thibodaux sewage treatment plant. The results indicated that the HMX was biodegraded under sulfate reducing, nitrate reducing, fermenting, methanogenic, and mixed electron accepting conditions. However, the rates of degradation varied among the various conditions studied. The fastest removal of HMX (from 22 ppm on day 0 to < 0.05 ppm on day 11) was observed under mixed electron-acceptor conditions, followed in order by sulfate reducing, fermenting, methanogenic, and nitrate reducing conditions. Under aerobic conditions, HMX was not biodegraded, which indicated that HMX degradation takes place under anaerobic conditions via reduction. HMX was converted to methanol and chloroform under mixed electron-acceptor conditions. This study showed evidence for HMX degradation under anaerobic conditions in a mixed microbial population system similar to any contaminated field sites, where a heterogeneous population exists.  相似文献

The performance of an individual can be critically influenced by its experience early in life as well as trans-generationally by the conditions experienced by its parents. However, it remains unclear whether or not the early experience of parents and offspring interact with each other and adapt offspring when the parental and own early environmental conditions match. Here, zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) that had experienced either early low or high nutritional conditions raised their offspring under either matched or mismatched nutritional conditions. Parental and offspring early conditions both separately affected the offspring’s adult phenotype, but early conditions experienced by parents and offspring did not interact as predicted. Offspring that grew up under conditions matching those their parents had experienced did not do better than those that grew up in a mismatched environment. Thus, transgenerational effects remain a lifelong burden to the offspring acting in addition to the offspring’s own early life experience. The lack of evidence for adaptive programming to matching environmental conditions may result from non-predictive environments under natural conditions in such opportunistic breeders.  相似文献

The necessary and sufficient conditions for a particular compartment in an n-compartment system, under certain initial conditions, to be described by two exponential terms have been given by Mann and Gurpide (1969). These conditions are here derived in matrix-vector form, by an essentially algebraic process, under more general initial conditions. The existence of a certain constant is required by the Mann-Gurpide conditions. It is shown that that constant must be one of the real roots of a given matrix. Under certain restrictions, that constant is the unique largest real root of that matrix. Certain obvious sufficient conditions for the Mann-Gurpide conditions to hold are shown to be necessary in the case of symmetrizable systems.  相似文献

While the toxicological effects of mercury (Hg) are well studied in mammals, little is known about the mechanisms of toxicity to bacterial cells lacking an Hg resistance (mer) operon. We determined that Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 is more sensitive to ionic mercury [Hg(II)] under aerobic conditions than in fumarate reducing conditions, with minimum inhibitory concentrations of 0.25 and 2 μM respectively. This increased sensitivity in aerobic conditions is not due to increased import, as more Hg is associated with cellular material in fumarate reducing conditions than in aerobic conditions. In fumarate reducing conditions, glutathione may provide protection, as glutathione levels decrease in a dose-dependent manner, but this does not occur in aerobic conditions. Hg(II) does not change the redox state of thioredoxin in MR1 in either fumarate reducing conditions or aerobic conditions, although thioredoxin is oxidized in Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA in response to Hg(II) treatment. However, treatment with 0.5 μM Hg(II) increases lipid peroxidation in aerobic conditions but not in fumarate reducing conditions in MR-1. We conclude that the enhanced sensitivity of MR-1 to Hg(II) in aerobic conditions is not due to differences in intracellular responses, but due to damage at the cell envelope.  相似文献

Summary Manganese absorption by rice plants under flooded and unflooded conditions, in an upland and a lowland soil was studied. Both under flooded and unflooded conditions the rate of manganese absorption was high during 3rd to 4th week and again during 9th to 10th week.Rice grown under flooded conditions, in lowland soil absorbed more manganese and showed higher dry matter accumulation than under unflooded conditions. However manganese absorption and dry matter accumulation in rice grown under flooded conditions in upland soil were lower than under unflooded conditions.Rice grown under flooded conditions may give lower yields than rice grown under unflooded conditions due to some factor or combination of factors one of which may possibly be a high soluble iron content which interferes with the absorption of manganese.  相似文献

It is postulated that early succession is influenced by environmental conditions directly after a disturbance event and the temporal scale of succeeding disturbances. For example, Rincon Bayou, Texas, U.S.A. is an estuary stressed by large fluctuations in salinity ranging from oligohaline to hypersaline conditions; leading to the question: are benthic succession dynamics interrupted or affected by the temporal scale of salinity fluctuations? To answer this question, succession dynamics were investigated by manipulation of 1) initial environmental conditions, and 2) time between severe disturbances. The influence of environmental conditions and time course of succession were investigated by comparing two experiments. A synoptic-deployment experiment where samples were deployed at the same environmental conditions and a synoptic-retrieval experiment where samples were collected from deployments under different environmental conditions. Both experiments were conducted at varying time courses of 2-, 4- and 8-week durations between severe disturbances. Severe disturbances were simulated with defaunated sediment. Ambient conditions were simultaneously sampled as a reference. Environmental conditions directly affected succession. In the ambient study, succession occurred in conjunction with changes in environmental conditions. In the synoptic-deployment and synoptic-retrieval studies, environmental conditions at the time of retrieval were more important in determining community structure than deployment duration or initial environmental conditions at time of deployment. Initial environmental conditions were not the primary mechanism in regulation of succession because succession is likely interrupted by frequent salinity disturbances. The salinity-stressed estuary of Rincon Bayou appears to be in a constant state of early and intermediate succession because of frequent salinity-related disturbances.  相似文献

The biotransformation of carbon tetrachloride (CT) under various electron acceptor conditions was investigated using enrichment cultures developed from the anaerobic digester sludge of Thibodaux sewage treatment plant. The results indicated that CT was biotransformed under sulfate-reducing, methanogenic, nitrate-reducing, iron-reducing, fermenting, and mixed electron acceptor conditions. However, the rates of CT removal varied among the conditions studied. The fastest removal of CT (100% removal in 12 days) was observed under mixed electron acceptor conditions followed in order by sulfate-reducing, methanogenic, fermenting, iron-reducing, and nitrate-reducing conditions. Under mixed electron acceptor conditions, the CT was converted to methyl chlorides, which was further metabolized. Under sulfate, iron, nitrate-reducing, and methanogenic conditions, the major metabolite produced from CT metabolism was chloroform (CF). Under fermenting conditions, methylene chloride was produced from CT metabolism. This study showed evidence for CT metabolism in a mixed microbial population system similar to many contaminated field sites where a heterogeneous microbial population exists.  相似文献

Degradation of four heterocyclic compounds was examined under nitrate-reducing, sulphate-reducing and methanogenic conditions. Soil samples from a creosote-polluted site in Denmark were used as inoculum. Indole and quinoline were degraded under all redox conditions with the highest degradation rates obtained under sulphate-reducing conditions. Benzothiophene and benzofuran were not degraded during the observation period of 100 days under any of the redox conditions. Indole and quinoline degrading cultures could be repeatedly transferred under all redox conditions, except for degradation of quinoline under sulphate-reducing conditions which was inhibited by sulphide at concentrations above 0.8 mM. Degradation of quinoline under methanogenic conditions was also inhibited by 3.2 mM sulphide used as a reducing agent, but sulphide had no inhibitory effect on the degradation of indole in methanogenic and sulphate-reducing soil slurries.  相似文献

A study compared the behavior of rats kept under standard conditions with the behavior of those from enriched, semi-enriched, and single-housed conditions to determine whether standard conditions have detrimental effects on nonhuman animal welfare. The subjects were 35 female Hooded Norway rats. Using an emergence box, open field, and Hebb-Williams maze, the study measured the subjects' behaviors. Housing conditions significantly affected the behavior of the rats as measured by all 3 procedures. The results of the rats from standard conditions were intermediate between those of the single-housed and the more enriched groups. Thus, enrichng the standard environment would ameliorate behavioral deficits in rats kept under standard conditions.  相似文献

Food irradiation is a form of food processing to extend the shelf life and reduce spoilage of food. We examined the effects of γ radiation on the fatty acid composition, lipid peroxidation level, and antioxidative activity of soybean and soybean oil which both contain a large amount of unsaturated fatty acids. Irradiation at 10 to 80 kGy under aerobic conditions did not markedly change the fatty acid composition of soybean. While 10-kGy irradiation did not markedly affect the fatty acid composition of soybean oil under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions, 40-kGy irradiation considerably altered the fatty acid composition of soybean oil under aerobic conditions, but not under anaerobic conditions. Moreover, 40-kGy irradiation produced a significant amount of trans fatty acids under aerobic conditions, but not under anaerobic conditions. Irradiating soybean oil induced lipid peroxidation and reduced the radical scavenging activity under aerobic conditions, but had no effect under anaerobic conditions. These results indicate that the fatty acid composition of soybean was not markedly affected by radiation at 10 kGy, and that anaerobic conditions reduced the degradation of soybean oil that occurred with high doses of γ radiation.  相似文献

AIM: To investigate the effect of neutralization of reactive oxygen species (ROS-neutralized conditions) on the enumeration of chlorine-injured Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis using selective and nonselective media. METHODS: Pure cultures of E. coli NCTC8912 and Ent. faecalis NCTC775 were injured using dilute sodium hypochlorite, at free chlorine levels of 0.6 and 0.9 microg ml(-1), respectively, and then enumerated at 37 degrees C by surface plate counts on nonselective nutrient (N) agar and on several selective media, either under (i) standard aerobic conditions; (ii) aerobic conditions using growth medium, supplemented with 0.05%-w/v sodium pyruvate, to neutralize peroxides; or (iii) conditions designed to neutralize ROS, using a combination of 0.05%-w/v sodium pyruvate in the growth medium, together with incubation in an anaerobic jar. RESULTS: The counts obtained on the nonselective medium were lowest under aerobic conditions in unsupplemented medium, higher in pyruvate-supplemented (peroxide-neutralized) medium and highest for ROS-neutralized conditions. Counts for the selective media were often lower than those for nonselective N (nutrient) agar, with enhancement under peroxide-neutralized conditions and a further increase in counts under ROS-neutralized conditions. Broadly similar observations were made for three other strains of each organism. CONCLUSIONS: Chlorine-injured E. coli and Ent. faecalis become sensitive to ROS, giving higher counts under ROS-neutralized enumeration conditions than under conventional aerobic conditions. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The enhancement in counts observed under ROS-neutralized conditions indicate that the addition of pyruvate to the growth medium may not fully counteract the effects of sublethal injury under aerobic conditions, which is a novel observation. Thus, ROS-neutralized conditions may be required for optimal enumeration of faecal indicator bacteria. Furthermore, the lower counts, obtained using selective media indicate that the sensitivity of chlorine-injured bacteria to selective agents is not necessarily reversed under ROS-neutralized conditions.  相似文献

A method to rationally predict crystallization conditions for a previously uncrystallized macromolecule has not yet been developed. One way around this problem is to determine initial crystallization conditions by casting a wide net, surveying a large number of chemical and physical conditions to locate crystallization leads. A facility that executes the rapid survey of crystallization lead conditions is described in detail. Results and guidelines for the initial screening of crystallization conditions, applicable to both manual and robotic setups, are discussed.  相似文献

For randomly selected 50 villages in Bangladesh, an interview survey with a structured questionnaire was conducted to reveal their perception on the environmental, health and economic conditions at present and for the past 10-year change. The eight following items were analyzed in this paper: air pollution and water pollution, which represent environmental conditions with close relation to health conditions, soil degradation and deforestation, which represent environmental conditions with close relation to economic conditions, epidemic diseases and malnutrition, which represent health conditions, and poverty and jobless, which represent economic conditions. Among the 50 villages, deforestation was most frequently perceived serious at present and worsened in the past 10 years. Of the remaining seven items, those related to economic conditions were more seriously perceived than those related to health and environmental conditions. As revealed by the cluster analysis for the inter-item relations, epidemic diseases, which formed the same cluster with the environmental items, were recognized less serious whereas malnutrition, which formed the same cluster with the economic items, was recognized more serious. These findings are useful not only for rural development programs but also for mitigation programs toward health and environmental hazards in Bangladesh.  相似文献

The spectrum of craniofacial malformations includes conditions of congenital and acquired etiology. The conditions of craniofacial atrophy and hypoplasia may arise primarily or secondary to previous therapeutic interventions. The conditions of progressive hemifacial atrophy (Romberg disease) and radiation-induced hypoplasia will be reviewed on the basis of their etiology, pathogenesis, anatomy, and treatment. Approaches to the surgical management of these conditions will be discussed. The craniofacial neoplastic conditions of fibrous dysplasia, neurofibromatosis, and craniofacial tumors will also be reviewed and discussed.  相似文献
