A series of experiments was carried out in the S-300 facility (3 MA, 0.15 Θ, 100 ns) to study the behavior of a section of a magnetically insulated transmission line (MITL) at current densities of up to 500 MA/cm2 and linear current densities of up to 6 MA/cm (i.e., at parameters close to those expected in a fast Z-pinch fusion reactor projected in Sandia National Laboratories). The surface explosion of the ohmically heated MITL electrode is accompanied by the formation of a plasma layer on its surface. This can deteriorate of the transmission properties of the line because the vacuum gap is short-circuited by the plasma produced. The parameters of the electrode plasma and its effect on the MITL transmission properties were investigated experimentally. Possible consequences of the above effects are evaluated, and MHD simulations of the electrode explosion and the subsequent spread of the plasma layer are performed. It is shown that the time during which an MITL segment preserves its transmission properties conforms to the requirements of the conceptual fusion reactor.  相似文献

One of the factors limiting the transmission of the electromagnetic pulse to the load in high-power electrophysical facilities is the current leakage in magnetically insulated transmission lines (MITLs). In this paper, the Angara-5-1 eight-module facility with an output power up to 6 TW is considered. The experimental and calculated time profiles of the leakage current for eight-module shots with a dynamic load (cylindrical arrays made of 40 tungsten wires) and single-module shots with a solid cylindrical metal load are compared. When interpreting the results, the contribution of vacuum electrons to the leakage current at the transition from the cylindrical to the conical section of the MITL is taken into account.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of a section of a magnetically insulated transmission line (MITL) with a current density of up to 500 MA/cm2 and linear current density of up to 7 MA/cm (the parameters close to those in a fast-Z-pinch-driven fusion reactor projected at Sandia Laboratories). The experiments were performed in the S-300 facility (3 MA, 0.15 Ω, 100 ns). At high linear current densities, the surface of the ohmically heated MITL electrode can explode and a plasma layer can form near the electrode surface. As a result, the MITL can lose its transmission properties due to the shunting of the vacuum gap by the plasma produced. In this series of experiments, the dynamics of the electrode plasma and the dependence of the transmission properties of the MITL on the material and cleanness of the electrode surface were studied. It is shown experimentally that, when the current with a linear density of up to 7 MA/cm begins to flow along a model MITL, the input and output currents differ by less than 10% over a time interval of up to 230 ns for nickel electrodes and up to 350 ns for a line with a gold central electrode. No effect of the oil film present on the electrode surface on the loss of the transmission properties of the line was observed. It is also shown that electron losses insignificantly contribute to the total current balance. The experimental results are compared with calculations of the electrode explosion and the subsequent expansion of the plasma layer. A conclusion is made that the life-time of the model MITL satisfies the requirements imposed on the transmission lines intended for use in the projected thermonuclear reactor.  相似文献

Studies of physical phenomena in magnetically insulated transmission lines (MITLs) of high-power pulsed current generators, analysis of operation of existing megavolt generators, and designing of new high-current generators with a power of up to ∼10 TW require creating an efficient numerical code for modeling the propagation of a high-power electromagnetic pulse in an MITL. This paper presents basic theoretical concepts of MITL operation in the framework of telegraph equations with allowance for electron leakage and variations in the electrode emissivity and analyzes propagation of an electromagnetic wave in the MITLs of the ANGARA-5-1 eight-module facility toward a dynamic load installed in the central unit with a matrix inductance.  相似文献

A residential facility for the aged was evaluated for their illumination needs. Only the shared facility and grounds immediately surrounding it were considered. The facility evaluated is one of the most modern and the lighting design is considered its best feature. The age of residents occupying the facility ranges from 60 to 85 years. The lighting evaluation included administering a lighting adequacy/inadequacy questionnaire and measurement of actual light levels in the various parts of the facility during the day and after dark hours. The results indicated that lighting in approximately half the areas surveyed was substandard. An attempt to develop recommendations for the lighting needs of the elderly was unsuccessful. It was concluded that realistic illumination level recommendations need to be developed for the elderly.  相似文献

The diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis in two ferrets who died from unrelated causes prompted a survey to determine the prevalence and incidence of the infection in ferrets at our facility. The survey of the existing ferret population and all new arrivals indicated cryptosporidiosis occurred as a subclinical disease in a high percentage of young ferrets: 40% of the ferret population and 38 to 100% of the new arrivals had cryptosporidial oocysts in their feces. The infection was found to persist for several weeks in both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed ferrets. The interspecies transmission of Cryptosporidium implies that infected ferrets should be considered a potential source of infection for the general population.  相似文献

The uncontrolled transmission of hog cholera in a large animal isolation facility, designed to control the movement of aerosols within and between individual wings of a multiunit building, indicated the need for a critical study of aerosol behavior under existing conditions of operation. Studies with aerosols of Escherichia coli B T3 bacteriophage (T3 coliphage) conclusively demonstrated the impossibility of obtaining the desired control by means of a "static" air balance relationship between adjacent areas within the facility. Modifications needed to provide the desired control of the air-handling system are outlined and discussed.  相似文献

The authors are members of a working group that formulated guidelines to minimize transmission of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection to man. Biosafety level (BSL) 2 standards are recommended for handling of clinical specimens and housing of SIV inoculated animals. Manipulation of SIV preparations may be performed in a BSL 2 facility with additional BSL 3 practices and equipment; for large volume or concentrated preparations of SIV BSL 3 containment is necessary. Written policies regarding management and testing of workers exposed to SIV are recommended.  相似文献

Background

The cost-effectiveness of Canada''s only supervised injection facility has not been rigorously evaluated. We estimated the impact of the facility on survival, rates of HIV and hepatitis C virus infection, referral to methadone maintenance treatment and associated costs.

Methods

We simulated the population of Vancouver, British Columbia, including injection drug users and persons infected with HIV and hepatitis C virus. The model used a time horizon of 10 years and the perspective of the health care system. We compared the situation of the supervised injection facility with one that had no facility but that had other interventions, such as needle-exchange programs. The effects considered were decreased needle sharing, increased use of safe injection practices and increased referral to methadone maintenance treatment. Outcomes included life-years gained, costs, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios discounted at 5% per year.

Results

Focusing on the base assumption of decreased needle sharing as the only effect of the supervised injection facility, we found that the facility was associated with an incremental net savings of almost $14 million and 920 life-years gained over 10 years. When we also considered the health effect of increased use of safe injection practices, the incremental net savings increased to more than $20 million and the number of life-years gained to 1070. Further increases were estimated when we considered all 3 health benefits: the incremental net savings was more than $18 million and the number of life-years gained 1175. Results were sensitive to assumptions related to injection frequency, the risk of HIV transmission through needle sharing, the frequency of safe injection practices among users of the facility, the costs of HIV-related care and of operating the facility, and the proportion of users who inject in the facility.

Interpretation

Vancouver''s supervised injection site is associated with improved health and cost savings, even with conservative estimates of efficacy.Supervised injection sites offer a safe and hygienic environment for people to inject their previously obtained illicit drugs under supervision.1,2 Observational studies from the facility in Vancouver, British Columbia, have demonstrated positive effects: a decrease in needle sharing and reuse of syringes, fewer people injecting drugs in public, an increase in referrals to social services and addiction counselling, a decrease in the number of publicly discarded syringes, no apparent increase in police reports of drug dealing or crime, and no observed increase in new initiates into drug use.3–5 Although an expert advisory committee recently concluded that the Vancouver facility has beneficial effects, prominent law enforcement groups have argued that the resources allocated to the facility would be more effectively spent elsewhere.6,7We used computer simulation to estimate the projected impact of Vancouver''s supervised injection site on survival, rates of HIV and hepatitis C virus infection, referral to methadone maintenance treatment and associated costs. Our goal was to assess the cost-effectiveness of the facility and thus provide important insights into this policy debate.  相似文献

Incidences of potential per os Cydia pomonella granulovirus (CpGV) transmission within a large codling moth colony were identified. CpGV was detected in the water which is used to wash egg sheets. When pre-neonates were extracted from eggs prior to emergence and tested for the presence of CpGV, 40% were found to carry amounts of CpGV detectable by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay, suggesting possible transovarial transmission of the virus. Although symptoms typical of virus infection and larval death were found infrequently within communal rearing trays, the frequency with which CpGV DNA was detected by PCR assays increased from a mean of 31% of 10-day-old larvae to 94% of 25-day-old larvae. CpGV in codling moth cadavers remained virulent after being held at 60 degrees C for 3 days under conditions similar to the treatment of spent diet at the rearing facility before its disposal. PCR tests of surface samples taken from air filters and rearing rooms of the rearing facility were found to contain CpGV. Bioassays of surface samples from the diet trash bin and a filter through which outside air is passed before entering the rearing chambers resulted in significant codling moth neonate mortality. The virulence of CpGV in dust from the spent diet and the original inadvertent positioning of the diet trash bin directly below one of the air intake ducts are suggested as a possible additional source of CpGV contamination within the facility.  相似文献

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), which is transmitted by mosquitoes, infects many animal species and causes serious acute encephalitis in humans and horses. In this study, a serosurvey of JEV in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) reared in Aichi Prefecture was conducted using purified JEV as an antigen for ELISA. The results revealed that 146 of 332 monkeys (44 %) were seropositive for JEV. In addition, 35 of 131 monkeys (27 %) born in the facility were seropositive, and the annual infection rate in the facility was estimated as 13 %. Our results provide evidence of the frequent exposure of many Japanese macaques to JEV, suggesting that there is a risk of JEV transmission to humans by mosquitoes.  相似文献

Design of soymetide-4 derivatives to potentiate the anti-alopecia effect   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Previously, we found that soymetide-4 (MITL), an N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP) agonist peptide derived from soybean beta-conglycinin alpha' subunit, stimulated phagocytosis of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and inhibited alopecia induced by etoposide, an anticancer drug, in neonatal rats after oral administration. We found that the fMLP receptor affinity and phagocytosis-stimulating activity of soymetide-4 was potentiated by replacement of Thr(3) with hydrophobic residues. Among the derivatives synthesized, [Trp](3)-soymetide-4 (MIWL) was the most potent, stronger by 180 and 130 times than soymetide-4 in receptor affinity and phagocytosis-stimulating activity, respectively. The anti-alopecia effect of [Trp](3)-soymetide-4 was about 3 times larger than that of soymetide-4 after oral administration.  相似文献

The phenomenon of mental creativity is considered from the standpoint of the theory of organismic sets, developed by the author in a series of previous publications. It is shown how the differences in creativity between different individuals may be interpreted on this basis, and why extreme creativity is rare. A parallel interpretation for facility in observation is given, and it is shown why facility in creativity and observation is much rarer than either individual facility. Minimizing the risk of poliovirus transmission from the poliovirus facility to an increasingly susceptible community is crucial when global poliovirus transmission and OPV use stops. Community risks of exposure to wild poliovirus as well as Sabin strains are highest from facility personnel who are unknowingly contaminated or infected. Immunization with OPV or IPV prevents poliomyelitis, but neither vaccine fully inhibits silent infection of the gut. Facility environments maintained at low relative humidity (<50%) may reduce poliovirus survival and inhalation risk. Circulating antibodies reduce personnel infection risks from injection or virus entry through breaks in skin or mucous membranes. Community exposure risk through inhalation of contaminated air effluent is likely low in most modern facilities. Community risks through ingestion of liquid effluents are facility-specific and may range from high to low. This assessment of community risks, when combined with assessments of facility-specific hazards and the consequences of wild or Sabin poliovirus transmission, provides the foundation for effective risk management.  相似文献

Close proximity interactions (CPIs) measured by wireless electronic devices are increasingly used in epidemiological models. However, no evidence supports that electronically collected CPIs inform on the contacts leading to transmission. Here, we analyzed Staphylococcus aureus carriage and CPIs recorded simultaneously in a long-term care facility for 4 months in 329 patients and 261 healthcare workers to test this hypothesis. In the broad diversity of isolated S. aureus strains, 173 transmission events were observed between participants. The joint analysis of carriage and CPIs showed that CPI paths linking incident cases to other individuals carrying the same strain (i.e. possible infectors) had fewer intermediaries than predicted by chance (P < 0.001), a feature that simulations showed to be the signature of transmission along CPIs. Additional analyses revealed a higher dissemination risk between patients via healthcare workers than via other patients. In conclusion, S. aureus transmission was consistent with contacts defined by electronically collected CPIs, illustrating their potential as a tool to control hospital-acquired infections and help direct surveillance.  相似文献

Data on the established DNA Bank were summarized. The DNA Bank included workers of the Mayak nuclear facility in the Southern Ural, who were exposed to chronic radiation predominantly from external gamma-rays in different doses, and their families for the future study on radiation mutations in somatic cells of parents and possible transmission of genome instability through the germline. Background: Management of Helicobacter pylori , a causative agent of gastrointestinal diseases is an important health problem in most countries. The main reasons include poorly defined epidemiological status and unrecognized mode of bacterial transmission. Our objective was to investigate the prevalence of H. pylori infection in a representative population of Iran and to evaluate possible risk factors for the H. pylori infection.
Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, 2561 healthy individuals aged 18–65 years (mean age, 35.5 years) were selected out of 12,100,000 inhabitants of Tehran province by cluster sampling. Infection with H. pylori was evaluated by detection of anti- H. pylori IgG antibody in serum. Sociodemographic status of each subject was determined by filling up a questionnaire.
Results: Prevalence of H. pylori infection was 69% and was correlated with increasing age. The highest infection rate (79.2%) was seen in individuals 46–55 years old. No association was detected between H. pylori positivity and gender. Low education of the study subjects; low father's and mother's education; poor tooth brushing habit; crowded families in childhood; and lack of household bath, hygienic drinking water, and swage disposal facility in childhood were determined as possible risk factors.
Conclusions: The rate of prevalence of H. pylori infection was higher than developed countries. Low socioeconomic status, poor sanitary indications, and crowded families in childhood were related to high prevalence of H. pylori infection in Iran. Accordingly, fecal–oral and oral–oral routes could be considered as the main pathways of transmission of H. pylori .  相似文献

It has been predicted that one of the greatest increase in prevalence of diabetes will happen in the Middle East bear in the next decades. The aim of standard therapeutic strategies for diabetes is better control of complications. In contrast, some new strategies like cell and gene therapy have aimed to cure the disease. In recent years, significant progress has occurred in beta-cell replacement therapies with a progressive improvement of short-term and long term outcomes. In year 2005, considering the impact of the disease in Iran and the promising results of the Edmonton protocol, the funding for establishing a current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) islet processing facility by Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center was approved by Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Several islet isolations were performed following establishment of cGMP facility and recruitment of all required equipments for process validation and experimental purpose. Finally the first successful clinical islet isolation and transplantation was performed in September 2010. In spite of a high cost of the procedure it is considered beneficial and may prevent long term complications and the costs associated with secondary cares. In this article we will briefly describe our experience in setting up a cGMP islet processing facility which can provide valuable information for regional countries interested to establish similar facilities.  相似文献

Zero-dimensional (lumped parameter) and one dimensional models, based on simplified representations of the components of the cardiovascular system, can contribute strongly to our understanding of circulatory physiology. Zero-D models provide a concise way to evaluate the haemodynamic interactions among the cardiovascular organs, whilst one-D (distributed parameter) models add the facility to represent efficiently the effects of pulse wave transmission in the arterial network at greatly reduced computational expense compared to higher dimensional computational fluid dynamics studies. A tridecapeptide (MITLAIPVNKPGR) that stimulates phagocytosis of human neutrophils was isolated from a trypsin digest of soybean proteins. This peptide is derived from the soybean β-conglycinin ′ subunit and was named soymetide-13. The N-terminal methionine residue of soymetide-13 is essential for its activity, and removal of C-terminal residues revealed that soymetide-4 (MITL) is the minimal structure required for phagocytosis stimulation. Although they are not formylated at their N-termini, soymetides have a weak affinity for the N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP) receptor and their phagocytosis-stimulating activity is inhibited by the fMLP antagonist Boc-MLP. Interestingly, soymetide-4 promotes tumor necrosis factor production at a higher level than soymetide-13 following oral administration in mice.  相似文献
