In recent years, biofiltration has been increasingly applied as an air pollution control technology to minimize or eliminate emissions of volatile organic compounds from industrial sources and environmental remediation activities. Although the ability of this technology to maintain high removal efficiency during relatively steady loading conditions has been well established for many waste streams, relatively little research has focused on development of operating strategies that could improve treatment performance during transient loading conditions typical of industrial operations. In the research described herein, two operating strategies were evaluated over a period of 295 days in biofilters treating a model waste gas stream containing a two-component mixture of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and toluene. One biofilter was operated as a sequencing batch biofilter (SBB), and the other was operated as a conventional continuous-flow biofilter (CFB). During "normal" steady loading conditions, the model waste stream contained MEK concentrations ranging from 80 to 89 ppmv and toluene concentrations ranging from 28 to 30 ppmv. Both biofilter operating strategies resulted in stable long-term performance with greater than 99% contaminant removal during these normal loading conditions. On a regular basis, the influent MEK and toluene concentrations were temporarily increased to five times the normal influent concentration for the duration of 1 h to test performance during transient "shock loading" conditions. Biofilter performance during the model shock loading conditions demonstrate that SBB operating strategies can result in superior treatment in two important areas: (1) overall mass of contaminants removed and (2) minimum instantaneous removal efficiency.  相似文献

Biofiltration of ethylbenzene vapours: influence of the packing material   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In order to investigate suitable packing materials, a soil amendment composed of granular high mineralized peat (35% organic content) locally available has been evaluated as carrier material for biofiltration of volatile organic compounds in air by comparison with a fibrous peat (95% organic content). Both supports were tested to eliminate ethylbenzene from air streams in laboratory-scale reactors inoculated with a two-month conditioned culture. In pseudo-steady state operation, experiments at various ethylbenzene inlet loads (ILs) were carried out. Maximum elimination capacity of about 120 g m(-3) h(-1) for an IL of 135 g m(-3) h(-1) was obtained for the fibrous peat. The soil amendment reactor achieved a maximum elimination capacity of about 45 g m(-3) h(-1) for an inlet load of 55 g m(-3) h(-1). Ottengraf-van den Oever model was applied to the prediction of the performance of both biofilters. The influence of gas flow rate was also studied: the fibrous peat reactor kept near complete removal efficiency for empty bed residence times greater than 1 min. For the soil amendment reactor, an empty bed residence time greater than 2 min was needed to achieve adequate removal efficiency. Concentration profiles along the biofilter were also compared: elimination occurred in the whole fibrous peat biofilter, while in the soil amendment reactor the biodegradation only occurred in the first 65% part of the biofilter. Results indicated that soil amendment material, previously selected to increase the organic content, would have potential application as biofilter carrier to treat moderate VOC inlet loads.  相似文献

Fungal biocatalysts in the biofiltration of VOC-polluted air   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Gas-phase biofilters used for the treatment of waste gases were originally packed with compost or other natural filter beds containing indigenous microorganisms. Over the past decade much effort has been made to develop new carrier materials, more performant biocatalysts and new types of bioreactors. Elimination capacities reached nowadays are 5 to 10 times higher than those originally reported with conventional compost biofilters. With the recently developed inert filter beds, inoculation is a prerequisite for successful start-up and operation. Either non-defined mixed cultures or pure bacterial cultures have originally been used. The search for efficient fungal biocatalysts started only a few years ago, mainly for the biofiltration of waste gases containing hydrophobic compounds, such as styrene, alpha-pinene, benzene, or alkylbenzenes. In this review, recently isolated new fungal strains able to degrade alkylbenzenes and other related volatile organic pollutants are described, as well as their major characteristics and their use as biocatalysts in gas-phase biofilters for air pollution control. In biofiltration, the most extensively studied organism belongs to the genus Exophiala, although strains of Scedosporium, Paecilomyces, Cladosporium, Cladophialophora, and white-rot fungi are all potential candidates for use in biofilters. Encouraging results were obtained in most of the cases in which some of those organisms were present in gas-phase biofilters. They allow reaching high elimination capacities and are resistant to low pH values and to reduce moisture content.  相似文献

The removal of hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) was investigated in a lab scale biofilter packed with biomedia, encapsulated by sodium alginate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The main H(2)S oxidation products were SO(4)(2-), SO(3)(2-), S(2-) and S(0). The immobilized cell biofilter required no separate acclimatization period and showed high removal efficiencies (RE) within the first few days of experiments. The removal efficiencies in the biofilter were consistently greater than 99% even when H(2)S loading was 6 g m(-3)h(-1). The maximum elimination capacity achieved in this study is 8 g H(2)Sm(-3)h(-1) at a loading rate of 13 g H(2)Sm(-3) h(-1). The response of the immobilized cells to fluctuations in inlet concentration and flow rate was determined by subjecting the biofilter to inlet loads of up to 10 g H(2)Sm(-3)h(-1). The biofilter responded effectively to these shock loading conditions and convalesced rapidly within 4-8h. Pressure drop values were consistently less throughout the operational period. The results from this study suggest that an immobilized cell biofilter is effective in treating H(2)S under steady and transient operating conditions.  相似文献

Waste gas containing diethyldisulphide (DEDS) is generated from various industries including pulp and paper, refinery, rayon and molasses based distilleries, etc. DEDS has odour threshold detection with an average concentration of 10(-9)mg/m(3) at 25 degrees C. DEDS is toxic to bacteria, fungus and also to mammals when exposed for a long period. Waste gas containing DEDS require proper treatment prior to discharge into the environment. DEDS containing waste gas was treated in a biofilter, packed with compost along with wooden chips and enriched with DEDS degrading microorganisms. The biofilter could remove DEDS to the extent of 94+/-5% at a loading of 1.60 g/m(3)/h with an empty bed retention time of 150s. At optimal operating conditions, the average moisture content required by the biofilter was in the range of 60-65%. The biodegradative products of DEDS were thiosulphate and sulphate.  相似文献

The removal of hydrophobic pollutants in biofilters is often limited by gas liquid mass transfer to the biotic aqueous phase where biodegradation occurs. It has been proposed that the use of fungi may improve their removal efficiency. To confirm this, the uptake of hexane vapors was investigated in 2.6-L perlite-packed biofilters, inoculated with a mixed culture containing bacteria and fungi, which were operated under neutral or acid conditions. For a hexane inlet load of around 140 g.m-3.h-1, elimination capacities (EC) of 60 and 100 g.m-3.h-1 were respectively reached with the neutral and acid systems. Increasing the inlet hexane load showed that the maximum EC obtained in the acid biofilter (150 g.m-3.h-1) was twice greater than in the neutral filter. The addition of bacterial inhibitors had no significant effect on EC in the acid system. The biomass in the acid biofilter was 187 mg.g-1 (dry perlite) without an important pressure drop (26.5 mm of water.m-1reactor). The greater efficiency obtained with the acid biofilter can be related to the hydrophobic aerial hyphae which are in direct contact with the gas and can absorb the hydrophobic compounds faster than the flat bacterial biofilms. Two fungi were isolated from the acid biofilter and were identified as Cladosporium and Fusarium spp. Hexane EC of 40 g.m-3.h-1 for Cladosporium sp. and 50 g.m-3.h-1 for Fusarium sp. were obtained in short time experiments in small biofilters (0.230 L). A biomass content around 30 mg.g-1 (dry perlite) showed the potential for hexane biofiltration of the strains.  相似文献

Mesophilic and thermophilic biotreatment of BTEX-polluted air in reactors   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
This study compares the removal of a mixture of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and all three xylene isomers (BTEX) in mesophilic and thermophilic (50 degrees C) bioreactors. In the mesophilic reactor fungi became dominant after long-term operation, while bacteria dominated in the thermophilic unit. Microbial acclimation was achieved by exposing the biofilters to initial BTEX loads of 2-15 g m(-3) h(-1), at an empty bed residence time of 96 s. After adaptation, the elimination capacities ranged from 3 to 188 g m(-3) h(-1), depending on the inlet load, for the mesophilic biofilter with removal efficiencies reaching 96%. On the other hand, in the thermophilic reactor the average removal efficiency was 83% with a maximum elimination capacity of 218 g m(-3) h(-1). There was a clear positive relationship between temperature gradients as well as CO(2) production and elimination capacities across the biofilters. The gas phase was sampled at different depths along the reactors observing that the percentage pollutant removal in each section was strongly dependant on the load applied. The fate of individual alkylbenzene compounds was checked, showing the unusually high biodegradation rate of benzene at high loads under thermophilic conditions (100%) compared to its very low removal in the mesophilic reactor at such load (<10%). Such difference was less pronounced for the other pollutants. After 210 days of operation, the dry biomass content for the mesophilic and thermophilic reactors were 0.300 and 0.114 g g(-1) (support), respectively, reaching higher removals under thermophilic conditions with a lower biomass accumulation, that is, lower pressure drop.  相似文献

A carbon/silica composite designed for use under compressive loads was fabricated from rice husk (RH), an agricultural waste material. RH was pulverized by using a planetary ball mill, then carbonized and molded into the precursor by means of hot-pressing without using any binders. A compression of 100 MPa was intermittently applied to the RH powder heated from room temperature to 150 °C, and then to 280 °C. The precursor, the bulk density of which was 1.37 g/cm3, was sintered for further densification at up to 1400 °C without compression, in nitrogen gas. The smaller particle size of the pulverized RH was beneficial for densifying the carbon/silica composite and increasing its compressive strength. Sintering at 800 °C for 1 h in nitrogen gas provided the maximum bulk density of 1.52 g/cm3 and the maximum Vickers hardness at the surface of 343 HV. The maximum compressive strength was measured to be 55.7 MPa using a sintering temperature of 1200 °C.  相似文献

The removal of toxic methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) is studied in a lab scale biofilter packed with mixture of coal and matured compost. The biofiltration operation is divided into 5 phases for a period of 60 days followed by shock loading conditions for three weeks. The maximum removal efficiency of 95% is achieved during phase II for an inlet concentration of 0.59 g m−3, and 82–91% for the inlet concentration in the range of 0.45–1.23 g m−3 of MEK during shock loads. The Michaelis–Menten kinetic constants obtained are 0.086 g m−3 h−1 and 0.577 g m−3. The obtained experimental results are validated using Ottengraf–van den Oever model for zero-order diffusion-controlled region to understand the mechanism of biofiltration. The critical inlet concentration of MEK, critical inlet load of MEK and biofilm thickness are estimated using the results obtained from model predictions.  相似文献

Biofiltration is an efficient biotechnological process used for waste gas abatement in various industrial processes. It offers low operating and capital costs and produces minimal secondary waste streams. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a pilot scale biofilter in terms of pollutants’ removal efficiencies and the bacterial dynamics under different inlet concentrations of H2S. The treatment of odourous pollutants by biofiltration was investigated at a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) (Charguia, Tunis, Tunisia). Sampling and analyses were conducted for 150 days. Inlet H2S concentration recorded was between 200 and 1300 mg H2S.m−3. Removal efficiencies reached 99% for the majority of the running time at an empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 60 s. Heterotrophic bacteria were found to be the dominant microorganisms in the biofilter. The bacteria were identified as the members of the genus Bacillus, Pseudomonas and xanthomonadacea bacterium. The polymerase chain reaction-single stranded conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) method showed that bacterial community profiles changed with the H2S inlet concentration. Our results indicated that the biofilter system, containing peat as the packing material, was proved able to remove H2S from the WWTP odourous pollutants.  相似文献

The composite filler micro-embedded with Pseudomonas putida (P. putida) was prepared and the biodegradation performance of the filler was evaluated in a biofilter. Five phases were set up to evaluate the performance of the biofilter under different toluene inlet loadings and transient shock loadings. In particular, the microbial community structure in the biofilms and fillers was measured by sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene. The results show that the biofilter packed with the composite fillers was suitable for the biodegradation of toluene. The biofilter could start up quickly with high removal efficiency (RE), and remain above 90 % RE when the empty bed residence time (EBRT) was 18 s and the inlet loading rates were not higher than 41.4 g/(m3·h). Moreover, the biofilter could tolerate substantial transient shock loadings. The high removal efficiency and elimination capacity contributed to rich bacterial communities for the efficient degradation of toluene. The dominant microbial communities at the phylum level were mainly Firmicutes, Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria. It is noteworthy that the abundance of Bacteroidetes at phylum level and Chungangia and Stenotrophomonas at genus level increased significantly during the re-start period.  相似文献

The macro-kinetic behavior of phenol removal from a synthetic exhaust gas was investigated theoretically as well as experimentally by means of two identical continuously operating laboratory-scale biological filter bed columns. A mixture of peat and glass beads was used as filter material. After sterilization it was inoculated with a pure strain of Pseudomonas putida, as employed in previous experimental studies. To determine the influence of the superficial gas flow rate on biofilter performance and to evaluate the phenol concentration profiles along the column, two series of continuous tests were carried out varying either the inlet phenol concentration, up to 1650 mg . m(-3), or the superficial gas flow rate, from 30 to 460 m(3) . m(-2) . h(-1). The elimination capacity of the biofilter is proved by a maximum volumetric phenol removal rate of 0.73 kg . m(-3) . h(-1). The experimental results are consistent with a biofilm model incorporating first-order substrate elimination kinetics. The model may be considered a useful tool in scaling-up a biofiltration system. Furthermore, the deodorization capacity of the biofilter was investigated, at inlet phenol concentrations up to 280 mg . m(-3) and superficial gas flow rates ranging from 30 to 92 m(3) . m(-2) . h(-1). The deodorization of the gas was achieved at a maximum inlet phenol concentration of about 255 mg . m(-3), operating at a superficial gas flow rate of 30 m(3) . m(-2) . h(-1). Industrial waste gas emissions containing pyridine are generated from pyridine manufacturing industries, and in industrial operations where pyridine is used as a solvent, as an intermediate for synthesis and as a catalyst for a variety of applications. Pyridine has unpleasant fishy odor with an odor index of 2390 and waste gaseous emissions containing pyridine require proper treatment prior to discharge. A biofilter, packed with compost and wood chips and inoculated with Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes-KPN for enrichment of pyridine-degrading microorganisms, was operated on a continuous feed basis for a period of more than 2 years. The results indicate that the biofilter medium with optimal moisture content of 68% and an effective bed retention time (EBRT) of 28.50s could degrade pyridine effectively (>99%) at a loading of 434 g pyridine m(-3)h(-1). The treated waste gas was also found to be free from pyridine odor.  相似文献

The removal of toluene and xylene from an artificial waste gaswas investigated in two laboratory scale biofilters filled withmixtures of peat, bark and wood. The packed beds differed in themixture of materials used, so that peat and then bark was thedominant constituent. The biofilters were operated in an upflowmode. Both biofilters showed relatively high removal efficienciesfor both pollutants (74–98%). The evaluation of the localelimination capacities in the peat-loaded biofilter revealed thatthe major part of pollutants was degraded in the middle layer. In this biofilter, larger differences in theremoval rates along the bed height were also observed. In thebiofilter with bark as dominant material, the major part ofpollutants was degraded at the inlet of the bed and also at arelative height of 0.7. Moisture contents of 71–80% and 65–78%were found for the biofilter with peat and bark respectively. Whenthe regular pouring of nutrient solution through the bed wasinterrupted for 1 month, a decrease in efficiency was observed inthe biofilter with bark, whilst the efficiency in the biofilter withpeat remained the same.  相似文献

A biofiltration system with sulfur oxidizing bacteria immobilized on granular activated carbon (GAC) as packing materials had a good potential when used to eliminate H(2)S. The sulfur oxidizing bacteria were stimulated from concentrated latex wastewater with sulfur supplement under aerobic condition. Afterward, it was immobilized on GAC to test the performance of cell-immobilized GAC biofilter. In this study, the effect of inlet H(2)S concentration, H(2)S gas flow rate, air gas flow rate and long-term operation on the H(2)S removal efficiency was investigated. In addition, the comparative performance of sulfide oxidizing bacterium immobilized on GAC (biofilter A) and GAC without cell immobilization (biofilter B) systems was studied. It was found that the efficiency of the H(2)S removal was more than 98% even at high concentrations (200-4000 ppm) and the maximum elimination capacity was about 125 g H(2)S/m(3)of GAC/h in the biofilter A. However, the H(2)S flow rate of 15-35 l/h into both biofilters had little influence on the efficiency of H(2)S removal. Moreover, an air flow rate of 5.86 l/h gave complete removal of H(2)S (100%) in biofilter A. During the long-term operation, the complete H(2)S removal was achieved after 3-days operation in biofilter A and remained stable up to 60-days.  相似文献

After measuring toluene adsorption (15.7 mg-toluene/g-material), water holding capacity (18.5%), organic content (53.8%), specific surface area (18.1 m2/g-material), and microbial attachment, crab shells were chosen as the main packing material for a biofilter design. The crab shells, cheap and abundant in the Gangneung area, also have relatively rigid structure, low density, and ability to neutralize acids generated during mineralization of toluene. Since towel scraps have water holding capacity as high as 301.2%, 10% of the total packing was supplemented with them to compensate for low water holding capacity of the crab shells. The biofilter fed with defined chemical medium under 0.8∼1.3 mg/L of inlet toluene concentration and 18 seconds of residence time showed satisfactory removal efficiency of over 97% and 72.8 g/h·m3 of removal capacity. For the purpose of deceasing operation costs, leaf mold solution was tried as an alternative nutrient instead of a defined chemical medium. The removal efficiency and removal capacity were 85% and 56.3 g/h·m3, respectively, using the same inlet toluene concentration and residence time. This research shows the possibility of recycling crab shell waste as packing material for biofilter. In addition, leaf mold was able to serve as an alternative nutrient, which remarkably decreased the operating cost of the biofilter.  相似文献

Biofilters operated for the microbial oxidation of landfill methane at two sites in Northern Germany were analysed for the composition of their methanotrophic community by means of diagnostic microarray targeting the pmoA gene of methanotrophs. The gas emitted from site Francop (FR) contained the typical principal components (CH4, CO2, N2) only, while the gas at the second site Müggenburger Strasse (MU) was additionally charged with non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs). Methane oxidation activity measured at 22 degrees C varied between 7 and 103 microg CH4 (g dw)(-1) h(-1) at site FR and between 0.9 and 21 microg CH4 (g dw)(-1) h(-1) at site MU, depending on the depth considered. The calculated size of the active methanotrophic population varied between 3 x 10(9) and 5 x 10(11) cells (g dw)(-1) for biofilter FR and 4 x 10(8) to 1 x 10(10) cells (g dw)(-1) for biofilter MU. The methanotrophic community in both biofilters as well as the methanotrophs present in the landfill gas at site FR was strongly dominated by type II organisms, presumably as a result of high methane loads, low copper concentration and low nitrogen availability. Within each biofilter, community composition differed markedly with depth, reflecting either the different conditions of diffusive oxygen supply or the properties of the two layers of materials used in the filters or both. The two biofilter communities differed significantly. Type I methanotrophs were detected in biofilter FR but not in biofilter MU. The type II community in biofilter FR was dominated by Methylocystis species, whereas the biofilter at site MU hosted a high abundance of Methylosinus species while showing less overall methanotroph diversity. It is speculated that the differing composition of the type II population at site MU is driven by the presence of NMVOCs in the landfill gas fed to the biofilter, selecting for organisms capable of co-oxidative degradation of these compounds.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a bench-scale biotrickling filter (BTF) on the removal of ammonia gas from a waste stream using a simultaneous nitrification/denitrification (SND) process. It was found that the developed BTF could completely remove 100 ppm ammonia from a waste stream, with an empty bed retention time of 60 s and 98.4% nitrogen removal through the SND process under the tested conditions. It was elucidated that both autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria were involved in the nitrogen removal trough the SND process in the BTF. Additionally, the elimination capacity of total nitrogen by the BTF increased from 3.5 to 18.4 g N/m3 h with an inlet load of 20.6 g N/m3 h (73.6%). The findings of this study suggest that the BTF can be operated to attain complete ammonia removal through the SND process, thereby making the treatment of ammonia-laden gas streams both short and cost-effective.  相似文献

A biofilter reactor, to which is attached a large variety of microorganisms, can be employed to treat circulating water in an intensive aquaculture system. Some nitrogen-containing wastes, such as ammonium and nitrite, are toxic to the aquatic organisms. The removal rates of the nitrogenous wastes are regarded as indices for the efficiency of treatment by biofilters. In this study, a fungus that was characterized as being able to remediate multiple nitrogenous wastes was identified as Aspergillus niger NBG5. In a continuous fixed-slab reactor, the heterotrophic fungus utilized ammonium, nitrite, protein, and glucose simultaneously. The fungus assimilated ammonium, nitrite and protein at rates of 0.247, 0.07 and 0.096 g-N/g-cell/day, respectively, at 22 degrees C. The remediation rates of ammonium nitrogenous wastes decreased by a factor of eight at 35 degrees C, while the specific growth rates slightly increased. For nitrogenous wastes, ammonium was a preferred substrate but its rate of consumption declined significantly as temperature increased. The nitrogen consumption rates were inconsistent with the cell yields at high temperature. Further analysis of consumption ratios of C/N revealed that cells grew predominantly from the carbon at high temperature. The A. niger NBG5 consumed glucose rapidly at specific rates of 2-2.5 g-C/g-cell/day at 35 degrees C in the presence of ammonium and nitrite; while sluggish consumption of glucose was observed in the protein substrate. The protein could serve as an alternative carbon source. Further ANOVA statistical analysis with P < 0.05 revealed no significant effects of temperature on the specific growth rates of A. niger on the SG-NH4 and milk-protein substrates, whereas significant effects on the C/N ratio at culture temperatures higher than 25 degrees C were observed. These findings indicated that the carbon utilization rate increased with high temperature, whereas nitrogen utilization increased as temperature declined. A suitable operational temperature was suggested, depending upon the amount of waste contents of C/N. A high temperature stimulates the use of carbon waste, while a low temperature favors remediation of all nitrogenous wastes.  相似文献

A lava rock-based biofilter for the treatment of alpha-pinene   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Biofiltration is an emerging technology in the United States that utilizes microorganisms to biodegrade harmful contaminants in air to carbon dioxide and water. Biofiltration is not only more cost effective, but also more environmentally friendly than traditional technologies such as thermal oxidation and chemical scrubbing. The primary objectives of the study were to operate a lava rock-based laboratory biofiltration system for the removal of alpha-pinene. A consortium of microorganisms to be used as an inoculum was recovered that was able to use alpha-pinene as a sole source of carbon and energy. The removal of alpha-pinene from the laboratory system was monitored with a total hydrocarbon analyzer (THA). Based on THA analysis, elimination capacities as high as 100+g/m(3)/h were obtained in the laboratory biofilters. Removal efficiencies averaged 99% over a two year period. The solid support maintained a neutral pH with no buffer addition throughout the two year study and microbial levels were maintained between 10(6) and 10(7) colony forming units (CFU)/g of solid support. Bacillus and Rhodococcus species were found to be the majority of the microorganisms in the biofilters over a two year period. This is the first time an organism from either of these genera has been reported to utilize alpha-pinene as a sole source of carbon and energy. Overall, a preselected consortium of microorganisms coupled with lava rock as a biofilter solid support achieved extended alpha-pinene treatment levels that far exceed previously published values.  相似文献
