Nanopatterned CuInGaS2 (CIGS) thin films synthesized by a sol‐gel‐based solution method and a nanoimprint lithography technique to achieve simultaneous photonic and electrical enhancements in thin film solar cell applications are demonstrated. The interdigitated CIGS nanopatterns in adjacent CdS layer form an ordered nanoscale heterojunction of optical contrast to create a light trapping architecture. This architecture concomitantly leads to increased junction area between the p‐CIGS/n‐CdS interface, and thereby influences effective charge transport. The electron beam induced current and capacitance–voltage characterization further supports the large carrier collection area and small depletion region of the nanopatterned CIGS solar cell devices. This strategic geometry affords localization of incident light inside and between the nanopatterns, where created excitons are easily dissociated, and it leads to the enhanced current generation of absorbed light. Ultimately, this approach improves the efficiency of the nanopatterned CIGS solar cell by 55% compared to its planar counterpart, and offers the possibility of simultaneous management for absorption and charge transport through a nanopatterning process.  相似文献

Micro- and nanofabrication techniques have revolutionized the pharmaceutical and medical fields as they offer the possibility for highly reproducible mass-fabrication of systems with complex geometries and functionalities, including novel drug delivery systems and bionsensors. The principal micro- and nanofabrication techniques are described, including photolithography, soft lithography, film deposition, etching, bonding, molecular self assembly, electrically induced nanopatterning, rapid prototyping, and electron, X-ray, colloidal monolayer, and focused ion beam lithography. Application of these techniques for the fabrication of drug delivery and biosensing systems including injectable, implantable, transdermal, and mucoadhesive devices is described.  相似文献

This paper reviews the many recent advances at the Center for Ultrafast Optical Science (CUOS) at the University of Michigan in multi-MeV ion beam generation from the interaction of short laser pulses focused onto thin foil targets at intensities ranging from 1017 to 1019 W/cm2. Ion beam characteristics were studied by changing the laser intensity, laser wavelength, target material, and by depositing a well-absorbed coating. We manipulated the proton beam divergence using shaped targets and observed nuclear transformation induced by high-energy protons and deuterons. Qualitative theoretical approaches and fully relativistic two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations modeled energetic ion generation. Comparison with experiments sheds light on ion energy spectra for multi-species plasma, the dependences of ion-energy on preplasma scale length and solid density plasma thickness, and laser-triggered isotope yield. Theoretical predictions are also made with the aim of studying ion generation for high-power lasers with the energies expected in the near future, and for the relativistic intensity table-top laser, a prototype of which is already in operation at CUOS in the limits of several-cycle pulse duration and a single-wavelength spot size.  相似文献

Optical trapping is a technique for immobilizing and manipulating small objects in a gentle way using light, and it has been widely applied in trapping and manipulating small biological particles. Ashkin and co-workers first demonstrated optical tweezers using a single focused beam1. The single beam trap can be described accurately using the perturbative gradient force formulation in the case of small Rayleigh regime particles1. In the perturbative regime, the optical power required for trapping a particle scales as the inverse fourth power of the particle size. High optical powers can damage dielectric particles and cause heating. For instance, trapped latex spheres of 109 nm in diameter were destroyed by a 15 mW beam in 25 sec1, which has serious implications for biological matter2,3.A self-induced back-action (SIBA) optical trapping was proposed to trap 50 nm polystyrene spheres in the non-perturbative regime4. In a non-perturbative regime, even a small particle with little permittivity contrast to the background can influence significantly the ambient electromagnetic field and induce a large optical force. As a particle enters an illuminated aperture, light transmission increases dramatically because of dielectric loading. If the particle attempts to leave the aperture, decreased transmission causes a change in momentum outwards from the hole and, by Newton''s Third Law, results in a force on the particle inwards into the hole, trapping the particle. The light transmission can be monitored; hence, the trap can become a sensor. The SIBA trapping technique can be further improved by using a double-nanohole structure. The double-nanohole structure has been shown to give a strong local field enhancement5,6. Between the two sharp tips of the double-nanohole, a small particle can cause a large change in optical transmission, thereby inducing a large optical force. As a result, smaller nanoparticles can be trapped, such as 12 nm silicate spheres7 and 3.4 nm hydrodynamic radius bovine serum albumin proteins8. In this work, the experimental configuration used for nanoparticle trapping is outlined. First, we detail the assembly of the trapping setup which is based on a Thorlabs Optical Tweezer Kit. Next, we explain the nanofabrication procedure of the double-nanohole in a metal film, the fabrication of the microfluidic chamber and the sample preparation. Finally, we detail the data acquisition procedure and provide typical results for trapping 20 nm polystyrene nanospheres.  相似文献

In this work, a simple lignin‐based laser lithography technique is developed and used to fabricate on‐chip microsupercapacitors (MSCs) using 3D graphene electrodes. Specifically, lignin films are transformed directly into 3D laser‐scribed graphene (LSG) electrodes by a simple one‐step CO2 laser irradiation. This step is followed by a water lift‐off process to remove unexposed lignin, resulting in 3D graphene with the designed electrode patterns. The resulting LSG electrodes are hierarchically porous, electrically conductive (conductivity is up to 66.2 S cm?1), and have a high specific surface area (338.3 m2 g?1). These characteristics mean that such electrodes can be used directly as MSC electrodes without the need for binders and current collectors. The MSCs fabricated using lignin laser lithography exhibit good electrochemical performances, namely, high areal capacitance (25.1 mF cm?2), high volumetric energy density (≈1 mWh cm?3), and high volumetric power density (≈2 W cm?3). The versatility of lignin laser lithography opens up the opportunity in applications such as on‐chip microsupercapacitors, sensors, and flexible electronics at large‐scale production.  相似文献

Ag nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a zirconium oxide matrix in the form of Ag:ZrO2 nanocomposite (NC) thin films were synthesized by using the sol–gel technique followed by thermal annealing. With the varying of the concentration of Ag precursor and annealing conditions, average sizes (diameters) of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) in the nanocomposite film have been varied from 7 to 20 nm. UV–VIS absorption studies reveal the surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-induced absorption in the visible region, and the SPR peak intensity increases with the increasing of the Ag precursor as well as with the annealing duration. A red shift in SPR peak position with the increase in the Ag precursor concentration confirms the growth of Ag NPs. Surface topographies of these NC films showed that deposited films are dense, uniform, and intact during the variation in annealing conditions. The magnitude and sign of absorptive nonlinearities were measured near the SPR of the Ag NPs with an open-aperture z-scan technique using a nanosecond-pulsed laser. Saturable optical absorption in NC films was identified having saturation intensities in the order of 1012 W/m2. Such values of saturation intensities with the possibility of size-dependent tuning could enable these NC films to be used in nanophotonic applications.  相似文献

A nanopatterning technique using nanostamps that provides a facile process to create a nature‐inspired moth‐eye structure achieving high transmittance in the visible range as well as a self‐cleaning effect is reported. Commercially available perfluoropolyether (PFPE) and NOA63 as the mold resin and second replica mold material, respectively, play an important role in fabricating the structure. The structure is found to increase transmittance up to 82% at 540 nm and contact angle up to 150°, representing superhydrophobicity even without the aid of a fluorinated self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) coating. The resulting solid‐state dye‐sensitized solar cells (ssDSSCs) with moth‐eye structures show enhancement of efficiency to 7.3% at 100 mW cm?2, which is among the highest values reported to date for N719 dye‐based ssDSSCs. This nature‐inspired nanopatterning process could be used for improving light harvesting in any type of photovoltaic cell, and it produces superhydrophobic surfaces, which in turn lead to self‐cleaning for long‐term stability.  相似文献

Few studies have investigated the short-term effects of a very low carbohydrate ketogenic diet (KD) on body composition and substrate utilization in trained individuals. This study investigated effects on substrate utilization during incremental exercise, and changes in body composition, in response to seven days ad libitum consumption of a KD by athletes from endurance sports. Nine young trained males (age, 21.8 ± 1.9 y; height, 1.83 ± 0.11 m; body mass, 78.4 ± 13.8 kg; body fat, 14.9 ± 3.9%; VO2peak, 54.3 ± 5.9 mL kg-1 min-1) were assessed before (day 0; PRE) and after (day 7; POST) seven days of consuming an ad libitum KD. Following an overnight fast, body composition was measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry, and substrate utilization was measured during an incremental (3 min stages, 35 W increments) exercise test on a cycle ergometer. After KD, Wmax (PRE, 295 ± 30 W; POST, 292 ± 38 W) and VO2peak (PRE, 4.18 ± 0.33 L min-1; POST, 4.10 ± 0.43 L min-1) were unchanged, whereas body mass [-2.4 (-3.2, -1.6) kg; P < 0.001, d = 0.21], fat mass [-0.78 (-1.10, -0.46) kg; P < 0.001, d = 0.22] and fat-free mass (FFM) [-1.82 (-3.12, -0.51) kg; P = 0.013, d = 0.22] all decreased. The respiratory exchange ratio was lower, and rates of fat oxidation were higher, at POST across a range of exercise intensities. Maximal fat oxidation rate was ~1.8-fold higher after KD (PRE, 0.54 ± 0.13 g min-1; POST, 0.95 ± 0.24 g min-1; P < 0.001, d = 2.2). Short-term KD results in loss of both fat mass and FFM, increased rates of fat oxidation and a concomitant reduction in CHO utilization even at moderate-to-high intensities of exercise.  相似文献

The effect of light intensity (PAR) on the nitrogenase activity of Mastigocladus laminosus Cohn was studied by the acetylene reduction technique. Benthic mat from a thermal stream, Hot River, in Yellowstone National Park was used in both experimental and in situ incubations. This hot spring maintained a mean pH of 7.0, was essentially isothermal (ca. 50°C), and had virtually no upstream to downstream physicochemical gradients (P > 0.05). Two surveys of the stream showed that nitrogenase of the M. laminosus mat was significantly more active (P > 0.02) under low light intensities than under high intensities, 252 and 712 μE · m?2· s?1, respectively. Maximum activity of Hot River Mastigocladus (268 nmol C2H4· mg Chl a?1· h?1) occurred at 50% full midday light intensities; the rates at low light (mean = 247 nmol C2H4· mg Chl a?1· h?1) were significantly (P > 0.001) greater than those at high light (mean = 106). The results indicate that M. laminosus nitrogenase activity is low light adapted and suggest that the temporal pattern for nitrogen fixation might be significantly different from that of thermophilic Calothrix.  相似文献

Experiments were performed with intact chloroplasts and leaf cell protoplasts isolated from spinach. The light-dependent decrease in (H+) in the chloroplast stroma counteracts carbon reduction and is offset at low light intensities by a large decrease in NADP and a significant increase in [ATP][ADP] ratios. Excess accumulation of NADPH and/or ATP permits 3-phosphogly cerate reduction to occur. With increasing light intensity, NADP levels and [ATP][ADP] ratios increased. High rates of photosynthesis were observed at high and at low [ATP][ADP] ratios. Levels of dihydroxyacetone phosphate were dramatically increased in the light. In chloroplasts, this permitted conversion to ribulose bisphosphate which on carboxylation yields 3-phosphoglycerate. The light-dependent alkalization of the chloroplast stroma is known to be responsible for phosphogly cerate retention in the chloroplasts. A high chloroplast ratio of phosphogly cerate to dihydroxyacetone phosphate aids carbon reduction. Measured ratios of dihydroxyacetone phosphate to phosphogly cerate were averages between low chloroplast ratios and high cytosolic ratios. They were far higher, even under low-intensity illumination, than dark ratios. Since cytosolic NADH levels are known to increase much less in the light than cytosolic dihydroxyacetone phosphate levels, the large increase in the ratio of didydroxyacetone phosphate to phosphogly cerate must considerably increase cytosolic phosphorylation potentials even at very low light intensities. It is proposed that this increase is communicated to the mitochondrial adenylate system, and inhibits dark respiratory activity, giving rise to the Kok effect. The extent of stroma alkalization, the efficiency of metabolite shuttles across the chloroplast envelope, and rates of cytosolic ATP consumption are proposed to be factors determining whether and to what extent the Kok effect can be observed. Light activation of chloroplast enzymes was slow at low and fast at high light intensities. This contrasts to low NADP levels at low and usually higher levels at high light intensities. Maximum enzyme activation was observed far below light saturation of photosynthesis, and light activation of enzymes was often less pronounced at very high than at intermediate light intensities.  相似文献

Sugarcane leaves respired in full light and the CO2 evolved could be detected in sorghum or miaze photosynthesizing in the same closed system. A combination of radiometric and infra-red gas analysis techniques allowed the estimation of photorespiration (total CO2 evolution in light) and photosynthesis at increasing light intensities and of dark respiration. Rates of CO2 evolution approaching those of temperate zone plants occurred at lower light intensities but rapidly decreased with higher light. Smaller but significant quantities of 14CO2 were released even at intensities approximating full sunlight in leaves of maize, sorghum and sugarcane. Highly efficient CO2 capture may explain the low rates of photorespiration at high light intensities.  相似文献

Light drives phytoplankton productivity, so phytoplankton must exploit variable intensities and durations of light exposure, depending upon season, latitude, and depth. We analyzed the growth, photophysiology and composition of small, Thalassiosira pseudonana, and large, Thalassiosira punctigera, centric diatoms from temperate, coastal marine habitats, responding to a matrix of photoperiods and growth light intensities. T. pseudonana showed fastest growth rates under long photoperiods and low to moderate light intensities, while the larger T. punctigera showed fastest growth rates under short photoperiods and higher light intensities. Photosystem II function and content responded primarily to instantaneous growth light intensities during the photoperiod, while diel carbon fixation and RUBISCO content responded more to photoperiod duration than to instantaneous light intensity. Changing photoperiods caused species‐specific changes in the responses of photochemical yield (e?/photon) to growth light intensity. These photophysiological variables showed complex responses to photoperiod and to growth light intensity. Growth rate also showed complex responses to photoperiod and growth light intensity. But these complex responses resolved into a close relation between growth rate and the cumulative daily generation of reductant, across the matrix of photoperiods and light intensities.  相似文献

The geotropic responses of Phycomyces sporangiophores were studied under varying intensities of illumination, using a low speed centrifuge and a fixed beam of blue light. This light has a strongly inhibitory effect on the transient geotropic response, reducing it to 36 per cent of its magnitude in darkness. The inhibition does not vary systematically with light intensity over a range of 400-fold. The light sensitivity of the transient geotropic response thus differs from the light-growth response system, which shows the same growth rate in light and darkness. By contrast, the slower long term geotropic response is enhanced by light of moderate intensities, but is strongly inhibited by high intensities. At and above a mean intensity of about 1 µw/cm2, the long term response is completely removed. If the intensity is lowered from an inhibitory level, either to darkness or to a low level, the geotropic response appears after a time lag of 20 minutes. Furthermore an increase in intensity from one level to another, both levels normally enhancing, results in a transient reversal in the long term geotropic response, also after a time lag of 20 minutes. Thus it is suggested that light is acting at some intermediate step in the long term geotropic sensory system, a step that normally requires 20 minutes for completion.  相似文献

Upon illumination of dark-grown maize seedlings (5 days old) with incandescent light, there occurred a nearly simultaneous increase, after a certain lag period, in the activities of enzymes engaged in the C4 pathway and the Calvin-Benson cycle. The light-induced biosynthesis of chlorophyll (a and b) precedes the increase in enzyme activities and proceeds without lag phase. A diphasic feature in the elevation of enzyme activities as a function of the intensities of light provided was observed; the increase in enzyme activities was enhanced by light intensities greater than 103 ergs per square centimeter per second in comparison with light of lower intensities. Under light intensities greater than 103 ergs per square centimeter per second, the simultaneous addition of levulinic acid, which inhibited chlorophyll formation, markedly reduced the increase of enzyme activities. However, neither the diphasic light effect nor the inhibitory effect of levulinic acid was observed with ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase. The enzyme activities in the dark-grown maize seedlings were enhanced by a brief irradiation with the red light and the red light effect was reversed by the following far red light treatment. The red light-induced increase in the enzyme activities did not accompany chlorophyll synthesis, and was completely inhibited by cycloheximide, indicating that enzyme synthesis rather than activation might be involved. Light may play a dual role in enzyme induction; one is as an energy source through the photosystems at high intensities and the other is presumably as a signal mediated by phytochrome at low intensities.  相似文献

Summary The light curve of Cl-uptake (uptake vs. light intensity) byElodea densa in pure N2 shows that saturation is reached at a very low light intensity. In N2+3% CO2, on the other hand, there is considerably less Cl- uptake. Under these conditions, the saturation attained at low light intensity is only temporary, and the Cl--uptake increases steadily with a further rise in light intensity. It is suggested that the reason for the low intensity of light saturation may be the necessity for an intracellular transport of ATP from the site of its formation to the site of Cl--uptake.CO2 exerts a strong inhibitory influence on the Cl--uptake, especially at low light intensities. At higher intensities the inhibition diminishes and it is nearly absent at high intensities of white light. The inhibition by CO2 is also a function of the wavelength of the light; it is greatest in the region below 683 nm, where photosynthesis occurs with high efficiency, but it is still present at wavelengths beyond 700 nm.CO2 also inhibits the Cl--uptake at high light intensities of white light when small concentration of DCMU (5×10-7 M) is present at the same time. The inhibitory action of CO2 is partly interpreted as a consequence of a competition for ATP between CO2-assimilation (espectially below 683 nm) and the light-dependent Cl--uptake. In addition, however, it is suggested that at low light intensities the presence of CO2 effects a regulation between noncyclic and cyclic electron transports and photophosphorylation which is supposed to be a consequence of a change in the redox potential of ferredoxin or another cofactor acting in noncyclic and cyclic electron transports. Especially the inhibition of the Cl--uptake by CO2 in far-red light (>700 nm) and in the presence of DCMU is taken to be an indication of this intracellular regulation.

The covalent attachment of DNA oligonucleotides onto crystalline silicon (100) surfaces, in patterns with submicron features, in a straightforward, two-step process is presented. UV light exposure of a hydrogen-terminated silicon (100) surface coated with alkenes functionalized with N-hydroxysuccinimide ester groups resulted in the covalent attachment of the alkene as a monolayer on the surface. Submicron-scale patterning of surfaces was achieved by illumination with an interference pattern obtained by the transmission of 248 nm excimer laser light through a phase mask. The N-hydroxysuccinimide ester surface acted as a template for the subsequent covalent attachment of aminohexyl-modified DNA oligonucleotides. Oligonucleotide patterns, with feature sizes of 500 nm, were reliably produced over large areas. The patterned surfaces were characterized with atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, epifluorescence microscopy and ellipsometry. Complementary oligonucleotides were hybridized to the surface-attached oligonucleotides with a density of 7 × 1012 DNA oligonucleotides per square centimetre. The method will offer much potential for the creation of nano- and micro-scale DNA biosensor devices in silicon.  相似文献

Bird colour vision is mediated by single cones, while double cones and rods mediate luminance vision in bright and dim light, respectively. In daylight conditions, birds use colour vision to discriminate large objects such as fruit and plumage patches, and luminance vision to detect fine spatial detail and motion. However, decreasing light intensity favours achromatic mechanisms and eventually, in dim light, luminance vision outperforms colour vision in all visual tasks. We have used behavioural tests in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) to investigate how single cones, double cones and rods contribute to spectral sensitivity for large (3.4°) static monochromatic stimuli at light intensities ranging from 0.08 to 63.5 cd/m2. We found no influences of rods at any intensity level. Single cones dominate the spectral sensitivity function at intensities above 1.1 cd/m2, as predicted by a receptor noise-limited colour discrimination model. Below 1.1 cd/m2, spectral sensitivity is lower than expected at all wavelengths except 575 nm, which corresponds to double cone function. We suggest that luminance vision mediated by double cones restores visual sensitivity when single cone sensitivity quickly decreases at light intensities close to the absolute threshold of colour vision.  相似文献

Nanoarray fabrication is a multidisciplinary endeavor encompassing materials science, chemical engineering, and biology. We formed nanoarrays via a new technique, porphyrin-based photocatalytic nanolithography. The nanoarrays, with controlled features as small as 200 nm, exhibited regularly ordered patterns and may be appropriate for (a) rapid and parallel proteomics screening of immobilized biomolecules, (b) protein-protein interactions, and/or (c) biophysical and molecular biology studies involving spatially dictated ligand placement. We demonstrated protein immobilization utilizing nanoarrays fabricated via photocatalytic nanolithography on silicon substrates where the immobilized proteins are surrounded by a non-fouling polymer background.Biomolecular arrays facilitate molecular aggregate investigation and high throughput analysis of immobilized biomolecules. Current biomolecular arraying capabilities are limited by relatively large sample volumes (typical spot sizes are on the order of ∼100–200 μm) and relatively long incubation times (1). Despite their limitations, protein microarray applications include autoantibody profiling, antibody response profiling, and identification and detection of bacterial and protein analytes as well as disease proteomics (oncoproteomics) (25). Typically a specific analyte is bound and detected by fluorescence, resulting in an expression profile or protein atlas.Nanoarrays are expected to expand the use of biomolecular arrays beyond drug discovery, medical diagnostics, and genetic testing to include point-of-care and in-the-field applications (6). We present a rapid and low cost photocatalytic lithography method for generating biomolecular nanoarrays on a non-fouling background appropriate for analysis of immobilized biomolecules.A number of publications have reviewed approaches to nanofabrication and bionanopatterning (79) of substrates including photolithography, contact printing (9, 10), imprint lithography (1113), dip-pen lithography (1417), and block co-polymer formation (18, 19). These approaches exhibit varying degrees of efficiency and success. Photocatalytic lithography (PCL)1 is a more recently described technique that is capable of generating arrays. Lee and Sung (20) patterned silane layers by activating TiO2 (a photocatalytic semiconductor) via 2-min exposure to UV light. They produced ∼600-nm parallel lines with 400-nm spaces, and they subsequently performed atomic layer deposition of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) onto exposed silanol groups (alternating octadecylsiloxane regions did not have necessary precursor molecules). The subsequent decomposition of alkylsiloxane monolayers with TiO2 was reported to be 20 times faster than under UV irradiation in air.Previously we have described patterning via porphyrin-based PCL (21). Patterning is achieved within 10 s and with extremely low energy sources (an LED flashlight is sufficient). As presented below, we have miniaturized features patterned with this new technique and are now able to pattern on the scale of 200 nm; this is roughly half the reported scale achieved with PCL using photocatalytic semiconductors. We refer to patterning on this scale as porphyrin-based photocatalytic nanolithography (PCNL). We describe the implementation of porphyrin-based PCNL to form large scale nanoarrays appropriate for rapid, parallel, quantitative proteomics screening of immobilized biomolecules and to form spatially dictated ligand arrays for functional proteomics studies.  相似文献

Bracteacoccus minor grows on glucose both in the dark and in the light. However, the growth rates at 50 ft-c or higher in the presence of glucose are considerably lower than those in inorganic media at the same intensities. The lowered growth rates in the presence of glucose appear to be related to changes in metabolism toward increased production of storage carbohydrates. Glucose shortens the length of the lag phase at high light intensities and increases the length of the exponential phase at all light intensities, resulting in very high cell yields compared to cultures grown in inorganic media. B. minor has 2 transport systems for glucose: (1) a high affinity system, KS=1 × 10?5 M, which is formed in the dark in the absence of external glucose; and (2) a low affinity system, KS=5 × 10?4 M, which appears to be constitutive. At high concentrations of glucose there is also significant free diffusion of glucose into the cells. The glucose analog, 3-O-methyl glucose, is also taken up by the inducible system, but at a lower rate than glucose. It is Acumulated, about 2000 times in a 20-min incubation period, indicating active transport. Cycloheximide inactivates the high affinity system to the same extent as high light intensities, and also prevents induction of this system in the dark. Rates of photosynthesis are inversely correlated to glucose uptake rates over a range of light intensities of pre-incubation. The possession of a light-regulated high-affinity transport system as well as a constitutive low-affinity system for glucose is probably of competitive advantage to this alga in the soil environment.  相似文献
