Application of sewage sludge and fly ash (FA) to soil is gaining practice and has become an alternative to chemical fertilizers in many countries. The present study aimed to assess the potential of fly ash–tannery sludge (TS) mixture in two ratios {4 (TS):1 (FA), denoted as A and 4 (TS):2 (FA) denoted as B} and different amendments were made with soil to study the yield and metal availability and their uptake by Brassica campestris L. (cv. Pusa Jaikisan). Experimental data showed that increase in dry matter yield and oil content of B. campestris was noted in lower amendments of soil with mixture A. However, total chlorophyll content of the leaf increased significantly, whereas carotenoid content showed non-significant increase in all the amendments with mixtures A and B as compared to control. The translocation of most of the tested metals (Pb, Mn, Cd, Ni, and Fe) in the shoot of the plant was found higher except Cr, Cu, and Co. Overall, experimental results showed that mixture A (≥10%) was found to be suitable due to better yield and less accumulation of metal in the seed of B. campestris.  相似文献

The metal accumulation potential of Chenopodium album L. grown on various amendments of tannery sludge (TS) was studied after 60 days of sapling planted. The analysis of the results showed that the levels of pH, cation exchange capacity, organic carbon, organic matter and DTPA extractable metals (except Mn) of amendments increased by the addition of tannery sludge ratio. Shoot length of the plant increased by the addition of sludge, whereas, no marked change was observed in root length, fresh and dry weight of the plant. Accumulation of the metals in the plants was found in the order; Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Cu > Pb > Ni > Cd. Translocation of toxic metals (Cr, Pb, Cd) in different parts of the tested plant was found in the order; leaves > stems > roots. An increase in the photosynthetic pigments, carotenoid and leaf protein contents of the plants were found to increase with increase in sludge amendments. Correlation analysis between metal accumulation in the plants with DTPA extractable metals emphasized that Mn, Ni, Cr, Pb and Cd showed positive correlation (p < 0.05), whereas, Fe, Zn and Cu showed negative correlation. Transfer factor analysis emphasized that 10% TS amendments were suitable for phytoextraction of Cr. Overall analysis of the data exhibited that the plants may be used for phytoextraction of Cr from tannery waste contaminated soil as most of the metal was accumulated in harvestable part which is a matter of serious concern, whenever used for edible purposes.  相似文献

In soil biota, higher and enduring concentration of heavy metals like cadmium (Cd) is hazardous and associated with great loss in growth, yield, and quality parameters of most of the crop plants. Recently, in-situ applications of eco-friendly stabilizing agents in the form of organic modifications have been utilized to mitigate the adverse effects of Cd-toxicity. This controlled experiment was laid down to appraise the imprints of various applied organic amendments namely poultry manure (PM), farmyard manure (FYM), and sugarcane press mud (PS) to immobilize Cd in polluted soil. Moreover, phytoavailability of Cd in wheat was also accessed under an alkaline environment. Results revealed that the addition of FYM (5–10 ton ha-1 ) in Cd-contaminated soil significantly increased germination rate, leaf chlorophyll content, plant height, spike length, biological and grain yield amongst all applied organic amendments. Moreover, the addition of FYM (5–10 ton ha-1 ) also reduced the phytoavailability of Cd by 73–85% in the roots, 57–83% in the shoots, and 81–90% in grains of wheat crop. Thus, it is affirmed that incorporation of FYM (5–10 ton ha-1 ) performed better to enhance wheat growth and yield by remediating Cd. Thus, the application of FYM (5–10 ton ha-1 ) reduced the toxicity induced by Cd to plants by declining its uptake and translocation as compared to all other applied organic amendments to immobilize Cd under sandy alkaline polluted soil.  相似文献

The contamination of agricultural soils by heavy metals is a worldwide problem. Degradation of organic matter (OM) from organic amendments used in the remediation of metal-contaminated soils leads to changes in soil chemical properties shortly after their addition, which may affect the soil metal distribution. The effects of four differing organic amendments on chemical forms of Pb and Cd in a contaminated soil were investigated in a pot experiment of control unamended soil and soils amended with dry cow and poultry manures (20 g CM or PM kg?1 soil), and cow and poultry manure extracts (2 g CME or PME kg?1 soil) cultured with cannabis sativa. After eight weeks, a sequential extraction scheme was used to fractionate soil Pb and Cd into soluble-exchangeable (Sol-Exch), organic matter associated (AOM), and carbonates associated (ACar) forms. The addition of animal manures and their extracts increased the DTPA-extractable Pb and Cd in soil significantly. Soil Pb and Cd in Sol-Exch fraction were increased by manure applications. Both Pb and Cd in AOM fraction were increased by application of manures and their extracts. This increase was more obvious for Pb in application of cow and poultry manure extracts. The ACar chemical forms of Pb and Cd were also increased by application of manures and their extracts. The increases of Pb and Cd in Acar fraction was noticeable in soils treated with cow manure. Soil cultivation with cannabis sativa increased available, Sol-Exch, and AOM chemical forms of Pb in soil significantly compared to control soil. However, soil Pb and Cd in ACar fraction were decreased significantly by cannabis cultivation. The effect of cannabis cultivation on all of the Cd chemical forms (except on Sol-Exch) was similar to the results of Pb chemical forms. Plant cultivation had no significant effect on Cd in Sol-Exch chemical form.  相似文献

Cadmium (Cd) concentration in field-grown tobacco leaves usually ranges from < 0.5 to 5 mg Cd kg–1 dry matter (DM). Reducing bioavailability of soil Cd by adding amendments to the soil could be suitable to mitigate Cd uptake by tobacco plants. However, little is known on the effect of inorganic amendments on agricultural soils with low Cd concentrations. Therefore, we performed a pot experiment with tobacco plants that were grown during 56 days in two neutral to alkaline agricultural soils with low total Cd concentrations (soil 1 = 0.4, soil 2 = 0.7 mg kg–1). Both soils were amended or not with 1 or 5% of sepiolite, zeolite, hydroxyapatite and apatite II™. Major and trace elements were measured in mid-stalk position leaves. Soil metals were measured in a DTPA soil extraction to assess the effect of the amendments on metal bioavailability. Some amendments significantly reduced Cd concentration in tobacco leaves, but the effect differed between the two soils tested. In soil 1, the use of zeolite at the 1% dose was the most efficient, reducing the average Cd concentration from 0.6 to 0.4 mg kg–1. In soil 2, the 5% hydroxyapatite treatment led to the maximal reduction in Cd concentration (50%), with an average final Cd concentration in leaves of 0.7 mg kg–1 (control: 1.5 mg kg–1). There was a dose effect for some amendments in soil 2 (containing more Cd), suggesting a reduced efficiency of the amendment at the lowest addition rate. DTPA extractable Cd and Zn measured at the end of the pot experiment were correlated to the metal concentrations in tobacco leaves suggesting that (1) the reduction in leaf Cd concentration was due to a reduction in metal availability to tobacco and (2) DTPA may be a suitable extractant to estimate Cd availability to tobacco plants in these two soils. In addition, a batch experiment was performed with the same soils to test a larger number of amendments, including the four tested in the pot experiment. Results were compared to those of the pot experiment to assess whether a batch experiment may predict the efficiency of an amendment on a given soil. It gave results compatible with those from the pot experiment except for the sepiolite and highlighted the broad range of potential amendments available for heavy metal remediation in crop plants.  相似文献

Organic materials with different functional groups can be used to enhance metal bioavailability. Traditional organic materials (rice straw and clover) and ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS) were applied to enhance metal uptake from polluted soil by Sedum plumbizincicola after repeated phytoextraction. Changes in pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and metal concentrations were determined in the soil solution after EDDS application. Amendment of the soil with ground rice straw or ground clove resulted in higher concentrations of Cd only (by factors of 1.92 and 1.71 respectively) in S. plumbizincicola compared to control soil. Treatment with 3 mmol kg(-1) EDDS increased all the metals studied by factors of 60.4, 1.67, and 0.27 for Cu, Cd, and Zn, respectively. EDDS significantly increased soil solution DOC and pH and increased soil plant-available metals above the amounts that the plants could take up, resulting in high soil concentrations of soluble metals and high risk of ground water contamination. After repeated phytoremediation of metal contaminated soils the efficiency of metal removal declines as the concentrations of bioavailable metal fractions decline. Traditional organic materials can therefore be much more effective and environmentally friendly amendments than EDDS in enhancing phytoremediation efficiency of Cd contaminated soil  相似文献

Tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum L.) were developed in soils with different fly ash (FA) amendments (25, 50, 75, 100% FA) to measure the effects of FA on metal accumulation, chlorophyll pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence, growth, biomass, gas exchange parameters, and the ascorbate glutathione pathway (AsA-GSH). The metal concentration was much higher in FA compared to the garden soil/(control). The observed metal translocation was higher in roots than shoots. Plants raised in soils treated with 50% or more FA showed significant decreases in growth, biomass, gas exchange parameters, protein, chlorophyll pigments, and fluorescence parameters. Additionally, a significant increase in antioxidants under higher FA-amended soils were observed. Our results showed that the ability of Solanum lycopersicum plants to effectively synchronize the actions of antioxidant enzymes associated in reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging – notably superoxidase dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR) – with good maintenance of the AsA/DHA ratio, that could be connected to FA stress tolerance. The toxic metals present in FA caused oxidative stress in Solanum lycopersicum, as evident from the increase in electrolyte leakage (EL), lipid peroxidation (MDA), and ROS levels. Furthermore, the AsA-GSH cycle plays a key role in alleviating oxidative damage caused by FA application.  相似文献

Industrial areas are characterised by soil degradation processes that are related primarily to the deposition of heavy metals. Areas contaminated with metals are a serious source of risk due to secondary pollutant emissions and metal leaching and migration in the soil profile and into the groundwater. Consequently, the optimal solution for these areas is to apply methods of remediation that create conditions for the restoration of plant cover and ensure the protection of groundwater against pollution. Remediation activities that are applied to large-scale areas contaminated with heavy metals should mainly focus on decreasing the degree of metal mobility in the soil profile and metal bioavailability to levels that are not phytotoxic. Chemophytostabilisation is a process in which soil amendments and plants are used to immobilise metals. The main objective of this research was to investigate the effects of different doses of organic amendments (after aerobic sewage sludge digestion in the food industry) and inorganic amendments (lime, superphosphate, and potassium phosphate) on changes in the metals fractions in soils contaminated with Cd, Pb and Zn during phytostabilisation. In this study, the contaminated soil was amended with sewage sludge and inorganic amendments and seeded with grass (tall fescue) to increase the degree of immobilisation of the studied metals. The contaminated soil was collected from the area surrounding a zinc smelter in the Silesia region of Poland (pH 5.5, Cd 12 mg kg-1, Pb 1100 mg kg-1, Zn 700 mg kg-1). A plant growth experiment was conducted in a growth chamber for 5 months. Before and after plant growth, soil subsamples were subjected to chemical and physical analyses. To determine the fractions of the elements, a sequential extraction method was used according to Zeien and Brümmer. Research confirmed that the most important impacts on the Zn, Cd and Pb fractions included the combined application of sewage sludge from the food industry and the addition of lime and potassium phosphate. Certain doses of inorganic additives decreased the easily exchangeable fraction from 50% to 1%. The addition of sewage sludge caused a decrease in fraction I for Cd and Pb. In combination with the use of inorganic additives, a mobile fraction was not detected and an easily mobilisable fraction was reduced by half. For certain combinations of metals, the concentrations were detected up to a few percent. The application of sewage sludge resulted in a slight decrease in a mobile (water soluble and easily exchangeable metals) fraction of Zn, but when inorganic additives were applied, this fraction was not detected. The highest degree of immobilisation of the tested heavy metals relative to the control was achieved when using both sewage sludge and inorganic additives at an experimentally determined dose. The sequential extraction results confirmed this result. In addition, the results proved that the use of the phytostabilisation process on contaminated soils should be supported.  相似文献

Abstract

This study monitors and assesses the effect of battery-manufacturing effluent containing metals Pb, Zn and Cd on endogenous antioxidants. Malonaldehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione sulfyhydryl (GSH) and catalase (CAT) which are known biomarkers of effluent were exposed to 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 90% amendments for 74h on the gills, liver and kidneys of C. punctata. There was more metal Zn accumulation in the gills and GSH contents increased significantly in the gills (P<0.01), liver accumulation of Pb was found to be more (P<0.05), whereas lowest accumulation of Pb was found in kidneys and the highest accumulation of Cd (P<0.05). Over all amendments of the effluents, MDA contents were increased in the gills, liver and kidneys (P<0.01). GSH levels were decreased among the liver and kidneys compared to the gills (P<0.01) at 90% amendment. Effluent exposure caused a significant decrease in the activities of CAT in the gills, liver and kidneys (P<0.01, 0.05 and 0.05) of fish. Increased MDA activity was indicative of the formation of free radicals in the fish with exposure to amendments of battery manufacturing effluent, while increased levels of GSH pointed to the occurrence of a scavenging mechanism of free radicals.  相似文献

The contamination of soils with heavy metals is a global disaster that is related to human activities. Phytostabilization basically refers to the use of metal-tolerant plants and inexpensive mineral or organic soil amendments to reduce the concentrations or toxic effects of contaminants in the environment. Here, we tested the effects of four cost-effective amendments (CaCO3, phosphate rock, activated carbon, and exhausted olive cake ash) on Cd, Zn, and Cu leaching and uptake by ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). The results showed that all amendments reduced Cd, Zn, and Cu leaching, mainly due to the alkalinity increase. Among all amendments tested, CaCO3 was the most effective treatment in decreasing both the heavy-metal leaching and concentrations in ryegrass shoots. Results obtained suggest the efficacy of several amendments, but further work is needed to gain insight into their possible synergetic effects.  相似文献

The ability of selected plants and amendments to treat Pb, Cd and Zn accumulations from a metalliferous waste disposal site was studied both in the greenhouse and field. Spinach (Spinacea oleracea), cabbage (Brassica oleracea), and a grass-legume mix (red fescue, Festuca rubra; ryegrass, Lolium perenne); and bean (Vicia faba) were grown in the greenhouse on blast furnace slag or baghouse dust amended with composted peat (CP). All plant species accumulated Pb, Cd and Zn to varying degrees. Total soil metal concentrations had a marked influence on plant uptake. Topdressing versus incorporating CP had a significant (p<0.05) effect on spinach and cabbage tissue metal concentrations. Soil Pb and Zn tended to shift towards less bioavailable forms after treatment with CP. Field plots were treated with CP, farmyard manure (FYM), or inorganic fertilizer. Dry matter production of spinach, cabbage and a grass-legume mix was greatest on either the CP or FYM treatments. Phytostabilization in combination with organic amendments may be the most appropriate technology to ensure stabilization of soil metals at this site.  相似文献

Enhanced phytoextraction: in search of EDTA alternatives   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Enhanced phytoextraction proposes the use of soil amendments to increase the heavy-metal content of above-ground harvestable plant tissues. This study compares the effect of synthetic aminopolycarboxylic acids [ethylenediamine tetraacetatic acid (EDTA), nitriloacetic acid (NTA), and diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA)] with a number of biodegradable, low-molecular weight, organic acids (citric acid, ascorbic acid, oxalic acid, salicylic acid, and NH4 acetate) as potential soil amendments for enhancing phytoextraction of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Ni) by Zea mays. The treatments in this study were applied at a dose of 2 mmol/kg(-1) 1 d before sowing. To compare possible effects between presow and postgermination treatments, a second smaller experiment was conducted in which EDTA, citric acid, and NH4 acetate were added 10 d after germination as opposed to 1 d before sowing. The soil used in this screening was a moderately contaminated topsoil derived from a dredged sediment disposal site. This site has been in an oxidized state for more than 8 years before being used in this research. The high carbonate, high organic matter, and high clay content characteristic to this type of sediment are thought to suppress heavy-metal phytoavailability. Both EDTA and DTPA resulted in increased levels of heavy metals in the above-ground biomass. However, the observed increases in uptake were not as large as reported in the literature. Neither the NTA nor organic acid treatments had any significant effect on uptake when applied prior to sowing. This was attributed to the rapid mineralization of these substances and the relatively low doses applied. The generally low extraction observed in this experiment restricts the use of phytoextraction as an effective remediation alternative under the current conditions, with regard to amendments used, applied dose (2 mmol/kg(-1) soil), application time (presow), plant species (Zea mays), and sediment (calcareous clayey soil) under study.  相似文献

Cadmium contamination in croplands is recognized one of the major threat, seriously affecting soil health and sustainable agriculture around the globe. Cd mobility in wastewater irrigated soils can be curtailed through eco-friendly and cost effective organic soil amendments (biochars) that eventually minimizes its translocation from soil to plant. This study explored the possible effects of various types of plants straw biochar as soil amendments on cadmium (Cd) phytoavailability in wastewater degraded soil and its subsequent accumulation in sunflower tissues. The studied biochars including rice straw (RS), wheat straw (WS), acacia (AC) and sugarcane bagasse (SB) to wastewater irrigated soil containing Cd. Sunflower plant was grown as a test plant and Cd accumulation was recorded in its tissues, antioxidant enzymatic activity chlorophyll contents, plant biomass, yield and soil properties (pH, NPK, OM and Soluble Cd) were also examined. Results revealed that addition of biochar significantly minimized Cd mobility in soil by 53.4%, 44%, 41% and 36% when RS, WS, AC and SB were added at 2% over control. Comparing the control soil, biochar amended soil effectively reduced Cd uptake via plants shoots by 71.7%, 60.6%, 59% and 36.6%, when RS, WS, AC and SB. Among all the biochar, rice husk induced biochar significantly reduced oxidative stress and reduced SOD, POD and CAT activity by 49%, 40.5% and 46.5% respectively over control. In addition, NPK were significantly increased among all the added biochars in soil–plant system as well as improved chlorophyll contents relative to non-bioachar amended soil. Thus, among all the amendments, rice husk and wheat straw biochar performed well and might be considered the suitable approach for sunflower growth in polluted soil.

Degradation of organic matter (OM) from organic amendments used in the remediation of metal contaminated soils leads to changes in soil chemical properties shortly after their addition, which may affect the soil metal distribution. The effects of two differing organic amendments on OM mineralisation and fractionation of heavy metals in a contaminated soil were investigated in an incubation experiment. The treatments were: control unamended soil, soil amended with fresh cow manure, and soil amended with a compost having a high maturity degree. The soil used was characteristic of the mining area at La Unión (Murcia, Spain) with 28% CaCO(3) and sandy-loam texture (pH 7.7; 2602 mg kg(-1)Zn; 1572 mg kg(-1)Pb). Manure and compost C-mineralisation after 56 days (24% and 3.8%, respectively) were below values reported previously for uncontaminated soils. Both amendments favoured Zn and Pb fixation, particularly the manure. Mn solubility increased at the beginning of the experiment due to a pH effect, and only Cu solubility increased through organic matter chelation in both amended soils.  相似文献

Soil amendment with two types of composts: animal manure (AC) and vegetable waste (VC) induced composts have potential to alleviate Cd toxicity to maize in contaminated soil. Therefore, Cd mobility in waste water irrigated soil can be addressed through eco-friendly and cost effective organic soil amendments AC and VC that eventually reduces its translocation from polluted soil to maize plant tissues. The comparative effectiveness of AC and VC at 3% rate were evaluated on Cd solubility, its accumulation in maize tissues, translocation from root to shoot, chlorophyll contents, plant biomass, yield and soil properties (pH, NPK, OM). Results revealed that the addition of organic soil amendments significantly minimized Cd mobility and leachability in soil by 58.6% and 47%, respectively in VC-amended soil over control. While, the reduction was observed by 61.7% and 57%, respectively when AC was added at 3% over control. Comparing the control soil, Cd uptake effectively reduced via plants shoots and roots by 50%, 46% respectively when VC was added in polluted soil. However, Cd uptake was decreased in maize shoot and roots by 58% and 52.4% in AC amended soil at 3% rate, respectively. Additionally, NPK contents were significantly improved in polluted soil as well as in plant tissues in both composts amended soil Comparative to control, the addition of composts significantly improved the maize dry biomass and chlorophyll contents at 3% rate. Thus, present study confirmed that the addition of animal manure derived compost (AC) at 3% rate performed well and might be consider the suitable approach relative to vegetable compost for maize growth in polluted soil.  相似文献

Abstract

The use of organic amendments is a common practice in Pakistan to improve soil fertility. Organic amendments affect the chemical speciation and thus the bioavailability of heavy metals and their uptake and toxicity to plants. The present study evaluates the influence of organic amendments viz. farm yard manure (FM), poultry manure (PM), press mud (PrM) and activated carbon (AC) on nickel (Ni) bioavailability in soil, as well as its uptake into, and growth responses of, Trifolium alexandrinum. Pot experiments were conducted where T. alexandrinum was exposed to three different concentrations of Ni i.e., 30, 60 and 90 mg kg?1 in the form of NiCl2 solution in the presence and absence of organic amendments each applied at 15 g kg?1 soil. The results showed that the effect of organic amendments on Ni bioavailability and uptake by T. alexandrinum depended on the Ni concentration in the soil and the amendment type. Application of organic amendments generally increased Ni phytoavailability in soil and Ni uptake by plants at low Ni levels (Ni-0 and Ni-30) but decreased at higher levels (Ni-60 and Ni-90).  相似文献

The study was undertaken with the aim of testing the feasibility of growing Vigna radiata on fly-ash dykes or on fly-ash contaminated soil. Experiments were conducted in earthen pots (12″) having various amendments of fly-ash with garden soil, press mud and farm yard manure and harvested after 60 days of growth. Various growth variables were analyzed, viz., root-shoot length, biomass yield, number of branches, photosynthetic area and pigments, protein content, in vivo nitrate reductase activity and nodulation frequency. The metal accumulation potential (Fe, Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd) in roots and shoot tissues of plants was determined in various fly-ash amendments and seeds were also examined for their metal content so that they can be utilized for growing in fly-ash-contaminated areas. Our results show that the plants grown in 100% fly-ash accumulated significant amounts of metals due to which general vigor and development of plant are affected. V. radiata grown on ameliorated fly-ash showed tolerant characteristics. Plants accumulated metal in the order Fe > Cu > Zn > Cr > Cd. However, their concentration was more in shoot than root tissue except in the case of Fe, which was found to have accumulated more in root tissues. Press mud (25%) amended with fly-ash was found to be the best ameliorant to support plant growth. It may be concluded from the present study that V. radiata was an ideal crop for growing in fly-ash-contaminated areas for the revegetation of fly-ash landfills.  相似文献

Lime, sepiolite and peat were used as amendments to study their effects on the chemical speciation of Cd and Pb in a polluted paddy soil under moist and water-logged conditions. The results showed that application of amendments reduced acid-extractable Cd (up to 12.56% and 5.07%) and Pb (up to 6.69% and 2.68%) in moist and water-logged soils, respectively. The reducible Cd and residual Cd was increased while the oxidizable Cd was decreased after adding amendments. However, the oxidizable Pb was increased while the residual Pb was decreased in amended soil, and the reducible Pb presented a different changing trend under moist and water-logged conditions. The soil pH was significantly correlated with different fractions of Cd and Pb in soil, which indicated a distinct influence of soil pH on the redistribution process of Cd and Pb fractions in amended soil.  相似文献
