Cereal stands in central Europe are commonly infested with three species of aphids that may become serious pests. With increasing abundance, the proportion of a particular species in the total aphid population may remain constant, suggesting a density-independent exponential growth, or the proportion can change, suggesting density-dependent constraints on growth. The constraints that affect particular species, and thus their relative abundance, were studied. The proportionality between maximum abundances of the cereal aphids was studied using a 10-year census of the numbers of aphids infesting 268 winter wheat plots. For two species their abundance on leaves and ears was compared. With increasing aphid density the maximum abundance of Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus) remained proportional, but not that of Sitobion avenae (Fabricius), which was constrained by the smaller surface area of ears compared to leaves. There was no evidence of inter-specific competition. Maximum abundance of R. padi and Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) on leaves did not change proportionally as the proportion of M. dirhodum decreased with increasing overall aphid density. This decrease was probably caused by the restricted distribution of M. dirhodum, which is confined to leaves, where space is limiting. No change in proportion between populations was detected when the average densities were below 0.54 aphids per leaf or ear. Non-proportional relationships between aphid populations appeared to be due to spatial constraints, acting upon the more abundant population. Detecting the limitation of population growth can help with the assessment of when density-independent exponential growth is limited by density-dependent factors. This information may help in the development of models of cereal aphid population dynamics.  相似文献

1 Aphid populations may show strong year-to-year fluctuations, but questions remain regarding the dominance of factors that cause this variation, especially the role of natural enemies. To better understand the dynamics of aphid species that occur as pests in cereals, we investigated the relative influence of top-down control by a predator and weather (temperature and precipitation) on population fluctuations of three cereal aphid species.
2 From 1987 to 2005, populations of Metopolophium dirhodum , Sitobion avenae and Rhopalosiphum padi in insecticide-free stands of winter wheat were monitored in the Praha-Ruzyné region of the Czech Republic. Densities of an aphidophagous predator, the ladybeetle Coccinella septempunctata , were recorded from an overwintering site in the landscape. Weather was quantified using historical records.
3 A significant bottom-up effect of densities of aphids on those of C.   septempunctata was found, but evidence of direct top-down regulation of aphids by C.   septempunctata was only significant in the case of R.   padi . There was no significant periodicity in the dynamics of the aphid or C.   septempunctata , suggesting that there was no clear predator-prey cycle. Combinations of C.   septempunctata and weather variables could be used to explain M.   dirhodum and R.   padi per capita rate of change. There were also indications that weather directly affected peak density of M.   dirhodum .
4 We conclude that regional estimates of C.   septempunctata densities are not sufficient to determine whether aphid population dynamics are driven by predator–prey interactions. Feasibility of time series analysis as an investigative tool in aphid population dynamics studies is discussed.  相似文献

Apterous Sitobion avenae on oats were found to have a higher reproductive rate on the ears (5–95 nymphs per day) than on young leaves (3–78 nymphs per day), mature leaves (2–17 nymphs per day) or senescent leaves (2–08 nymphs per day). At each growth stage of the the host plant large aphids gave birth to more young than small aphids, but aphids of the same weight on different growth stages of the host plant had different reproductive rates. On wheat in the field S. avenae gave birth to more young on the ears but less on the leaves than Metopolophium dirhodum on the leaves.
The suitability of ears to S. avenae changed through the flowering and ripening stages. During the latter part of the milky-ripe stage the reproductive rate of S. avenae declined and its mortality increased. The consequences of the variations in reproduction and mortality are discussed in relation to the life history and population dynamics of S. avenae and the assessment of cereal varieties for aphid resistance.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted in 1997 and 1998 to evaluate the impact of resistance to Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), on the cereal aphid complex in wheat. Two spring wheats were planted: the variety "Centennial" (Russian wheat aphid susceptible) and the advanced line IDO488 (Russian wheat aphid resistant). IDO488 incorporates the resistance found in PI 294994 into a Centennial background. Field plots were artificially infested with adult D. noxia and sampled weekly. The most abundant aphid species in 1997 were Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker), Sitobion avenae (F.), D. noxia, and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.). In 1998, the order of abundance was M. dirhodum, R. padi, S. avenae, and D. noxia. The resistant genotype had significantly fewer D. noxia than the susceptible one during both years. However, plant genotype had no significant effect on the other aphid species in either year. Both the initial density of D. noxia and plant growth stage, had a significant effect on D. noxia population development, but had no effect on the other aphid species. There was no interaction between D. noxia resistance and the population density of the other aphid species observed.  相似文献

In 1978, 1979 and 1980, counts were made of the numbers of cereal aphids on a maize crop near Fordingbridge, Hampshire, England. Maize plants were selected away from the edge of the crop and the number, morph, species and feeding site of the aphids were recorded. Metopolophium dirhodum and Rhopalosiphum padi were found at densities that exceeded those found on small-grain cereals and grasses at the same time of the year. Sitobion avenae and Macrosiphum euphorbiae were found at relatively low densities, and Rhopalosiphum maidis and Metopolophium festucae were observed rarely. Unlike other species, the numbers of R. padi continued to increase throughout the summer and reached a peak in September/October; at this time of the year, R. padi constituted over 98% of the aphids found on maize. M. dirhodum and S. avenae were found mostly on the leaves whereas R. padi appeared to favour the cob until populations became too large to be supported. If the area of maize grown in the UK increases, the crop will probably play an important role in the life cycle of cereal aphids (especially R. padi ). It is suggested that further work should be carried out on the pest status of aphids on maize and on the role that maize may play in the ecology of cereal pests.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Recent studies have shown that plant–plant interaction via chemicals (allelopathy) can affect insects. Here the effects on aphid acceptance of barley after exposure to volatiles and root exudates from two common weeds, the thistles Cirsium arvense and Cirsium vulgare , were investigated.
2. Settling by bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi , was significantly reduced on barley plants that had been exposed to volatiles from Cirsium species for 5 days. Settling by Sitobion avenae was also reduced on Cirsium -exposed plants, whereas settling by Metopolophium dirhodum was not.
3. In olfactometer tests, Cirsium -exposed barley was significantly less attractive to R. padi than was unexposed barley, indicating that exposure causes a change in the volatile profile of barley.
4. Exposure of barley to root exudates from Cirsium species had no effect on R. padi settling.
5. The results lend weight to the theory that the effects of plant–plant allelopathy can extend to higher trophic levels.  相似文献

Density dependence in cereal aphid populations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Long sequences of data on the incidence of cereal aphids from five European countries were analysed for evidence of density dependent processes occurring between years. Using a randomisation test (Pollard, Lakhani & Rotheray, 1987), density dependence was revealed in all (16) population censuses of Metopolo-phium dirhodum , 60% of Rhopalosiphum padi censuses (10 of 17) but only 25% of Sitobion avenae population censuses (4 of 16). Correcting for density independent effects of weather revealed the existence of significant direct density dependence in some populations censuses where it was previously undetected. The implications of density dependence in cereal aphid populations are considered.  相似文献

1 Insecticidal proteins can be excreted in the honeydew when sap-sucking insects feed on insect-resistant transgenic plants. Honeydew can be an important source of carbohydrates, thus potentially exposing a broad range of honeydew-feeding insects to transgene products.
2 Snowdrop lectin ( Galanthus nivalis agglutinin; GNA) dissolved in a 2 m sucrose solution had no antifeedant effect on female aphid parasitoids ( Aphidius ervi ) but had a direct negative effect on their longevity.
3 When feeding on honeydew from Rhopalosiphum padi feeding on a GNA-containing artificial diet, Aphidius ervi suffered a longevity reduction that was more pronounced than was to be expected based on the detected GNA concentration in the honeydew.
4 Analysis of carbohydrate and amino acid composition revealed that a change in honeydew composition caused by a GNA-effect on the aphids could be a possible explanation for the additional reduction in parasitoid longevity.
5 When comparing the effect of honeydew from Sitobion avenae and R. padi feeding on GNA-expressing or nontransformed wheat plants on A. ervi longevity, aphid species was found to have a significant effect, whereas the wheat variety had no effect. The latter result was probably due to low GNA expression levels in the plants. Differences in nutritional suitability between honeydew from R. padi and S. avenae could be explained by differences in carbohydrate and amino acid composition.
6 This is the first study to demonstrate that GNA ingested by aphids and transported into the honeydew can negatively affect the parasitoids consuming this honeydew.
7 We recommend that honeydew should be considered as a route of exposure to transgene products in future risk assessment studies.  相似文献

Abstract:  The quality of two aphid species ( Rhopalosiphum padi and Sitobion avenae ) as food for the staphylinid generalist predator Tachyporus hypnorum was investigated. Fruit flies ( Drosophila melanogaster ) were used as prey for comparison. T. hypnorum has been reported to prey on aphids, to consume large quantities and to show a high preference for aphids. This study showed that compared with fruit flies aphids are not high-quality prey for neither adult females nor larvae of T. hypnorum . Larvae were less able to utilize aphids than adult females. Reproduction was affected by both aphid species; a diet of S. avenae reduced fecundity, and a diet of R. padi reduced egg hatching success and prolonged the time spent in the egg stage compared with a fruit fly diet. For the T. hypnorum larvae pure diets of both S. avenae and R. padi resulted in high larval mortality. Overall ranking of the three prey types based on several fitness parameters differed between larvae and adults. The adult fitness parameters gave rather conflicting rankings of all three prey types though the two aphid species were of approximately the same overall value, whereas the larval fitness parameters gave identical rankings: D. melanogaster  >  S. avenae  >  R. padi . In the larval stage survival was greatly reduced by both aphid diets, while this was not the case for the adult females.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The growth (increase in height and leaf number) of four grass species was reduced by a −0.5 MPa drought stress, but the performance of an associated herbivore, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), was not affected consistently. The intrinsic rate of increase of R. padi was reduced by drought stress on three grass species, including Dactylis glomerata (L.), but was unaffected on Arrhenatherum elatius (L.). Therefore, there is no general relationship in the effect of plant drought on an insect herbivore, even among closely related host plant species.
2. Drought stress increased the quality of plant phloem sap, as indicated by increased sieve element osmotic pressure and essential amino acid concentrations. Thus, diet quality could not account for the reduced performance of R. padi under drought stress. The concentration of essential amino acids in the phloem of well-watered A. elatius was, however, lower than that of well-watered D. glomerata , correlating with the decreased performance of aphids on well-watered A. elatius .
3. There were no differences in aphid feeding duration between watering treatments or plant species but sap ingestion rates were reduced significantly under drought stress.
4. Using the measure of dietary amino acid concentrations and the estimate of sap ingestion, the essential amino acid flux through aphids was calculated. Compared with the flux through aphids feeding on well-watered D. glomerata , there was a reduction in aphids feeding on drought-stressed D. glomerata and drought-stressed A. elatius due to lower sap ingestion rates. The flux through aphids on well-watered A. elatius was also reduced due to low phloem essential amino acid concentrations. Thus, the performance of an aphid is correlated with the availability and accessibility of essential amino acids.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A Y-tube olfactometer was used to test the reactions of the hymenopteran cereal aphid parasitoids Aphidius uzbekistanicus Luzhetski and A. ervi Haliday to odours from aphids and their host plants. Only females responded to aphids but both sexes responded to plant odours. A. uzbekistanicus responded to the cereal aphids Sitobion avenae (F.) and Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) whilst A. ervi , which has a broad host range, responded to M. dirhodum and the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum. Female A. uzbekistanicus responded to wheat leaves only but males responded to a range of plant material. Both male and female A. ervi responded to wheat and bean leaves. The failure of A. ervi to respond to either nettle aphids, Microlophium carnosum (Bukt.), or nettle leaves, despite its frequent parasitization of this aphid in the field, suggests the existence of more than one race of the parasitoid and casts doubts on the usefulness of alternative hosts as reservoirs for A. ervi in integrated control programmes. Males of both species responded to their respective females suggesting the presence of a sex specific attractant.  相似文献

The influence of aphid lethal paralysis virus (ALPV), Rhopalosiphum padi virus (RhPV), natural enemies and fungal infection on the population growth of Rhopalosiphum padi and Sitobion avenae in the wheat fields of the Western Cape Province of South Africa was investigated at two sites. Time‐specific life tables were compiled for R. padi at one site. During the logarithmic phase of the development of R. padi aphids, natural enemies were not present in high numbers and the apparent large‐scale mortality observed appeared to be due to other causes. During the decline phase of this aphid population, the population size was reduced by 49%. This reduction coincided with a calculated high mortality of 70 aphids per plant. A dramatic decline in R. padi numbers and a high incidence of ALPV present in the aphid population was experienced during this period. Virus assays were carried out by double‐antibody sandwich enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (DAS‐ELISA) and an indirect immunofluorescent technique. Entomophthorales‐type fungal infection of aphids also reached its highest level during the decline phase, but at a later stage than ALPV infection, with a calculated level of 21 aphids per plant. This suggested that the presence of ALPV limited population development in R. padi. Similar results were obtained with S. avenae.  相似文献

The population dynamic processes in aphids and mites are very similar, because the two groups show strong similarities in their biology. Resource limitation, density-dependent emigration and natural enemies are major factors controlling aphid and mite populations, but an assessment of their relative importance has proven difficult. We used a physiologically based simulation model to investigate the relative impact of the three factors on aphid pest populations. The present simulation model includes winter wheat, three aphid species, Metopolophium dirhodum (Wlk.), Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and Sitobion avenae (F.) (Hom.: Aphididae) and three parasitoids, Aphelinus abdominalis Dalman (Hym.: Apheliniidae), Aphidius rhopalosiphi De Stefani-Perez and Praon volucre (Hal.) (Hym.: Aphidiidae). We derived and parameterized the model from literature data and validated it against independent field data. The study showed that resource limitation and density-dependent alate production restricts aphid numbers in the field. The mortality due to parasitoids increased late in the season and reduced the peak aphid numbers only moderately. The modelling approach we used is appropriate for simulating other pest–natural enemy systems, such as the spider mite–predatory mite system. Using an object-oriented modelling framework as a template, acarologists can now efficiently develop the simulation model of their choice. This revised version was published online in November 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Transgenic Bt maize and Rhopalosiphum padi (Hom., Aphididae) performance   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Abstract.  1. The population abundance and age structure of Rhopalosiphum padi , one of the most common maize aphid species, on transgenic Bt (expressing the Cry1Ab protein) and non-Bt isogenic maize was studied in commercial plots during three crop seasons.
2. A higher density of aphids, particularly alates and young nymphs, occurred in Bt plots at very young maize development stages, corresponding to the settlement period, in the 3 years studied. Possible causes are discussed. After this period, there were no differences between Bt and non-Bt maize.
3. Mortality, development, and reproduction of the offspring of alate forms of R. padi and the offspring of different generations of apterous forms fed with Bt maize were evaluated in the laboratory under controlled conditions.
4. The developmental and pre-reproductive times of the offspring of the first generation of alatae were shorter and the intrinsic rate of natural increase ( r m ) higher when aphids fed on Bt maize. The opposite occurs with the offspring of the first generation of apterous mothers, which have lower nymphal and adult mortality, shorter developmental and pre-reproductive times, a higher effective fecundity rate, and greater r m , when fed on non-Bt maize. The differences in aphid development on the two cultivars may be linked to changes in host-plant quality due to pleiotropic effects of the genetic modification.
5. No differences on aphid mortality, developmental and pre-reproductive times, fecundity, and r m were found between the offspring of apterous aphids maintained on Bt or non-Bt maize for several generations.  相似文献

1. The hypothesis, suggested by previous studies, that host plant contact reduces the cold tolerance of anholocyclic aphids was tested under laboratory conditions. Adult and first-instar Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) were exposed to temperatures of 0, –5 and –10 °C on intact plants, excised leaves and in the absence of contact with plant material.
2. Median lethal time (LT50) values at all three temperatures indicate that aphids exposed in association with plant material survive longer than aphids that have no contact with their host plant. The difference in survival was most pronounced at –10 °C. Therefore, the above hypothesis is rejected for aphids on cereals because host plant contact apparently enhances cold tolerance.
3. Exposure on excised leaves also enhanced aphid survival at low temperature but was less effective than the intact plant. This suggests that plant quality as well as the presence or absence of plants is important in the cold tolerance of aphids on cereals.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The reproductive output of an individual is known to be influenced by diet quality, but the quality of the parent's diet can also influence the performance of the offspring. Dietary maternal effects may interact with the effects of the offspring's diet to produce a variety of response patterns.
2. Maternal effects were investigated in a polyphagous predator, the rove beetle Tachyporus hypnorum , using three single-species diets: two low-quality diets consisting of the aphids Sitobion avenae and Rhopalosiphum padi , and the high-quality control Drosophila melanogaster diet. Offspring of females fed these diets were raised on the same monotypic diets and allowed to reproduce. Several fitness parameters were measured to indicate possible maternal effects in both F1 and F2 generations.
3. Maternal diet effects in F1 were found in egg size, hatching success, time to hatching, larval development time, larval survival, and sex ratio. Both aphid diets resulted in smaller eggs. A diet of R. padi resulted in reduced hatching success, longer time spent in the egg stage, and a female-biased sex ratio. A maternal diet of R. padi also prolonged larval development on S. avenae diet, while a maternal diet of S. avenae decreased survival on the R. padi diet. These effects were independent of egg size.
4. A maternal diet of R. padi enhanced the survival of F1 larvae raised on the same diet. Developmental selection operating through a high egg mortality may be the explanation for this seemingly positive effect.
5.  Sitobion avenae alone caused a significant reduction in the hatching success of F2 eggs, thus revealing grandmaternal effects.
6. The prediction that polyphagous predators are less likely to evolve adaptive maternal effects is supported by the fact that none of the documented maternal effects could be interpreted as adaptive.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. A study of searching behaviour on wheat and host preference of Aphidius rhopalosiphi (DeStefani-Perez) is described.
2. Parasitoids divided their time equally between the leaves but spent very little time on the ear.
3. After contact with honeydew or an aphid host, parasitoids were arrested in a particular area and increased the time spent searching.
4. Aphids feeding on the ear were parasitized less successfully, since their position between the grains protected them from parasitoid attacks.
5. A.rhopalosiphi exhibited no preference for Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) or Sitobion avenae (Fabricius), although the handling time for the latter was significantly longer; this resulted in fewer S.avenae being parasitized when it was abundant. Parasitoids did not switch between hosts in these experiments.
6. As a result of its searching behaviour, A.rhopalosiphi will encounter and parasitize M.dirhodum feeding on the leaves more frequently than S.avenae, which feeds on the ear. This will limit the parasitoid's ability to regulate populations of the cereal aphid S. avenae.  相似文献

Sitobion avenae is the most abundant aphid that infests the ears of winter wheat in central Europe. Control of this pest will benefit from prediction of its maximum abundances on ears. We attempted to predict the maximum numbers of this species infesting the ears using earlier counts of this species in ears and on leaves using data collected in the Czech Republic in 2002–2014. The numbers of aphids on particular leaves and the ears were recorded at weekly intervals. The maximum numbers infesting the ears were significantly related to aphid counts on the ears made 1 week, 2 weeks and even 3 weeks before the peak. A regression based only on plots where there were aphids (non‐zero aphid counts) recorded 3 weeks prior to the peak resulted in a critical number of ≥0.44 aphids/ear, which if exceeded resulted in a harmful maximum abundance of ≥5 aphids/ear at the peak. We also regressed maximum numbers infesting ears on numbers of S. avenae on leaves recorded 1, 2 and 3 weeks after earing, which all resulted in reliable predictions. Regression of maximum abundance on non‐zero aphid counts on the leaves in week 3 after earing revealed a critical number of ≥0.59 aphids/tiller. Zero aphid counts resulted in only 3% of cases of a harmful maximum abundance in ears. Using records of the numbers on flag leaves, which make up 58% of the S. avenae population present on the foliage, also provided reliable predictions of maximum abundance in ears. Predicting maximum numbers of aphids from earlier records of the numbers of aphids on leaves or ears is thus possible. The prediction may be further improved by increasing the precision with which the numbers of aphids initially infesting the crop are estimated.  相似文献

Yield loss in soft red winter wheat, Triticum aestivum L., caused by aphid-transmitted barley yellow dwarf virus (family Luteoviridae, genus Luteovirus, BYDV) was measured over a 2-yr period in central Missouri. Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) was the most common and economically important species, accounting for > 90% of the total aphids. Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch), and Sitobion avenae (F.) made up the remainder of the aphids. Aphid numbers peaked at wheat stem elongation in 2003 with 771 R. padi per meter-row. In the 2003-2004 growing season, aphid numbers averaged seven aphids per meter-row in the fall and peaked at 18 aphids per meter-row at jointing. Wheat grain yield was reduced 17 and 13% in 2003 and 2004, respectively. Thousand kernel weights were reduced 10 and 5% in the untreated plots compared with the treated control in 2003 and 2004, respectively. Padi avenae virus was the predominate strain, accounting for 81 and 84% of the symptomatic plots that tested positive for BYDV in 2003 and 2004. Our results indicate that economic thresholds for R. padi are 16 aphids per meter-row in the fall and 164 aphids per meter-row at jointing.  相似文献

The effect of simulated plant stress and parasitism by Aphelinus abdominalis (Dalman) on the mobility of four species of aphids was investigated. The aphids were placed on water stressed potted plants or on excised leaf segments on dry or moist filter-paper in Petri dishes. Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) was infested with Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker), Sitobion avenae (F.) and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (segments only), aubergine (Solanum melongena) leaf segments with Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas). The aphids that moved off the plants were removed and their development stage determined at 24-h (drought-stressed plants) or 3-h (leaf segments) intervals. On intact plants, aphid larvae were reluctant to move, and only moved after moulting into adults. On cut leaves, young 1st and 2nd instar larvae were more reluctant to move than 3rd and 4th instar larvae and adults. The numbers moving were initially positively correlated with aphid population density, and in M. euphorbiae occurred mainly during the night. Depending on aphid species and parasitoid age, parasitism by A. abdominalis retarded or accelerated movement, but the differences between young and old larvae and adults persisted after parasitism. A. abdominalis lays male eggs in small hosts and female eggs in large hosts. Consequently, its sex ratio was affected by differential movement of the host aphids of the male and female parasitoids. Old larvae and adult aphids readily moved and carried off female parasitoids, while the small aphids were more likely to remain and give rise to male-biased sex ratios.  相似文献
