The systematic position of the little-deformed parasitic copepod family Nicothoidae to the much deformed family Choniostomatidae has been disputed for many years. The new genus Diexanthema gen. nov., based on Diexanthema desistoma sp. nov. and Diexanthema bathydiaita sp. nov. discovered on two deep-sea asellote isopod species, clearly links the family Nicothoidae (via male Diexanthema) to the family Choniostomatidae (via female Diexanthema). Based upon the extreme sexual dimorphism of this new genus, it is suggested that the family Nicothoidae be dissolved and its members placed within the family Choniostomatidae. It is concluded that the differences seen between these two parasitic groups is probably due more to host adaptations than reflecting any phylogenetic trend that is evolutionarily significant. It is felt that the deep-sea environment may serve as a refugium for archaic copepod forms which may possibly offer additional clues and insights into the phylogeny of the parasitic copepoda.
This investigation suggests that the life history and parasite/host relationships of Diexanthema desistoma are quite complicated and well geared to the life history of its isopod host, Chelator insignis.  相似文献

A new species of the peracaridan order Bochusacea, Thetispelecaris yurikago, is described from a submarine cave on Grand Cayman Island, the Caribbean Sea. The new species is the fourth species of the order and family, and the second of the genus. Recent studies have strongly suggested a close phylogenetic affinity between cave-dwelling and deep-sea taxa in the Bochusacea as recognized in other cavernicolous/deep-sea crustaceans such as amphipods and copepods. The morphology of the gut and female reproductive system is observed for the first time in the Bochusacea: the stomach is complex with structures such as ridges, processes, spinules, and hairs in the lumen; paired gonopores are located near the base of the fifth pereiopods on the sternite.  相似文献

During the BENGAL cruises, an important collection of deep-sea benthic organisms was sampled. Among the pennatulacean colonies, a previously undescribed species of chunellid was collected. That material is here described as the type species of a new genus, Porcupinella gen. nov. The new genus and species are described based on material collected in the Porcupine Abyssal Plain (NE Atlantic), 4,839–4,847 m in depth. This is the first time that a chunellid is reported from the Atlantic Ocean. The new genus is compared with the other genera in the family, and some phylogenetic remarks about the families Chunellidae and Umbellulidae are also provided.  相似文献

A new species of Dendromunna and two new species of Dendrotion are described from abundant material collected in the Rockall Trough region of the north-east Atlantic. The taxonomy of the little known benthic deep-sea asellote isopod family Dendrotionidae is reviewed and keys provided for genera and species. Also diagnosed and described are two new species belonging to a new genus of siphonostomatoid copepod found as ectoparasites on the walking legs of the new Dendromunna. The new parasites belong in the Rhizorhina group of genera within the family Nicothoidae.  相似文献

New hexactinellid sponges were collected from 2589 m depth on the Carlsberg Ridge in the Indian Ocean during deep-sea dredging. All fragments belong to a new genus and species, Indiellagen. n.ridgenensissp. n., a representative of the family Aulocalycidae described here. The peculiar features of this sponge, not described earlier for other Aulocalycidae, are: longitudinal strands present in several layers and epirhyses channelization.  相似文献

A new genus and species of deep-sea eelpout (Zoarcidae), Barbapellis pterygalces, is herein described from a single adult female specimen carrying eggs and measuring 204 mm in total length. It was collected on the eastern Antarctic continental slope, off Terre Adélie, at ca. 1,200 m depth, on muddy bottom. Barbapellis is placed in the subfamily Gymnelinae and can be distinguished from all other genera by morphological characters unusual in zoarcids as well as by molecular barcoding. The genus is characterized by the presence of a complex system of cephalic skin crests and flaps, especially well developed around the mouth. A new terminology is proposed for the eleven crests and sevenfolds described. The skin folds may be used for foraging on muddy sea bottoms. The genus is also characterized by large, flexible, and highly palmate pectoral fins. The designation of the new genus is discussed.  相似文献

A new genus and new species of the family Cletopsyllidae Huys & Willems, 1989 from deep-sea sediment in the Gulf of Mexico, are reported and fully described and illustrated. The new genus Pentacletopsyllus (type species: P. montagni sp. n.) can be distinguished from the four known genera of the family by antennule segmentation, length ratio of first and second endopodal segments of P1, and armature pattern on P5 exopod. It also differs from its sister genera by the rostrum being bifid at the tip, third segment of the female antennule having a smooth posterior margin, the baseoendopod of P5 with biarticulate outer setophore bearing basal seta, and female caudal rami without lobate expansion. A revised key to species of the family Cletopsyllidae Huys & Willems, 1989 is provided.  相似文献

A new genus and species, Profundivermis intercalarius, is described from the deep-sea fish Coryphaenoides (Nematonurus) armatus from 4,850 m deep on the Porcupine Abyssal Plain, NE Atlantic. The genus is characterized by an inter-testicular ovary and is the only member of the subfamily Lepidapedinae to show this feature. The relationships of the members of the subfamily are analysed phylogenetically. Members of the subfamily are often found in deep-sea gadiforms.  相似文献

The genus Caryophyllia Lamarck, 1816 is the most diverse genus within the azooxanthellate Scleractinia comprising 66 Recent species and a purported 195 nominal fossil species. Examination of part of the deep-sea scleractinian collection made by the Paris Museum off New Caledonia and part of the material collected by CSIRO off Australian waters revealed the occurrence of 23 species of Caryophyllia, of which six are new to science. All new records, including the new species, are described, and synonyms, distribution, type locality, type material and illustration are provided for each species. An identification key to all Recent species of Caryophyllia is presented. In addition, the validity of the genus Caryophyllia was investigated by phylogenetic analyses of a dataset consisting of partial mitochondrial 16S rRNA sequences from 12 species assigned to this genus together with seven species representing some of the most morphologically similar caryophylliid genera, and 14 non-caryophyllid species representing 14 scleractinian families. Irrespective of the method of analysis employed, all of the Caryophyllia species formed a well-supported clade together with Dasmosmilia lymani and Crispatotrochus rugosus. Although based on a subset of the Recent Caryophyllia species, these results are consistent with Caryophyllia being a valid genus, but call for a reexamination of Dasmosmilia and Crispatotrochus.  相似文献

Dinetia nycterobia gen. et sp. n. (Draconematidae, Prochaetosomatinae) is described from a hydrothermal site of the East Pacific Rise. The new genus is characterized by body annulation reaching lip region and including spiral amphids, cuticle not thickened in head region, cephalic adhesion tubes without expanded base located in cervical region, pharynx with terminal bulb provided with a thick cuticularized lumen wall, and posterior adhesion tubes with bell-shaped end. Dinetia nycterobia , the type species, is characterized by the number of cephalic adhesion tubes (19 in male, 15 in female) and of the 4 rows of posterior adhesion tubes (5 tubes lateral, 14–19 subventral in male, 10–15 lateral, 13–20 subventral in female) and the shape and size of the spicules. Cephalochaetosoma pacificum notium subsp. n. from the Fiji deep-sea closely resemble C. pacificum pacificum from Philippines deep-sea but differs in male by the number of sublateral posterior adhesion tubes, the shape and size of the spicules, the number of cloacal setae, the structure of the testis and in both sexes by the spiny cuticular ornamentation, the shorter labial setae and morphometric data. A new genus and new species of Draconematidae is provisionally described, based on the observation of juvenile specimens from the polymetallic nodule formation.  相似文献

The marine benthic fauna in Arctic shallow-water is reported to be a relatively young assemblage by species of either Pacific or Atlantic affinity. Whether current deep-sea Pacific species are included in the affinity or not is unknown. Combining morphological comparisons and genetic analyses, a new deep-sea hydroid to science, Sertularia xuelongi sp. nov. (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa: Sertulariidae), is described from the northern margin of the Bering Sea Basin at depths of 800–1570 m collected in 2010. It is characterized by slender and zigzag-shaped hydrocauli, alternately arranged hydrothecae and the absence of distal-lateral horns in fully matured female gonothecae. Its distribution, currently known only from Bering Sea Basin, suggests that it could not be an Arctic species with Pacific affinity. However, phylogenetic analyses based on the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene show that it is clustered into a distinctive clade with four closely related species recorded from shallow-water of Northwest France, Iceland, Chukchi Sea and/or Bering Sea. In addition, its sequence similarity is highly relevant to these four species: Sertularia argentea (98.6 %), S. cupressina (98.8 %), S. plumosa (98.8 %) and S. robusta (99.4 %). All these provide a new insight into the relevance of North Pacific deep-sea species to the benthic fauna in Arctic and adjacent shallow-water. The taxonomic restriction of the genus Sertularia and the re-validation of the genus Polyserias are discussed. Future researches on more deep-sea species from Pacific and/or Atlantic are required to understand the evolution and speciation pattern involved in polar relevance.  相似文献

Five species of deep-sea pourtalesiid echinoids were collected by the RV G.O. Sars MAR-ECO expedition to the northern part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge: Solenocystis imitans new genus, new species, Echinosigra phiale (Thomson, 1872), Echinosigra (Echinogutta) fabrefacta Mironov, 1974, and two unidentified species of Pourtalesia. Three types of plastron plating are distinguished within the family Pourtalesiidae; in Solenocystis new genus the plating is similar to that in Spatagocystis, a genus known only from the deep-sea Antarctic. Each of three groups with distinctive plastron plating shows a continuous morphological gradation from a less elongated test without subanal rostrum to an extraordinarily elongated test with large rostrum and wide subanal fasciole; the ratio width/length of test varies from 0.86 to 0.12. Some morphological characters of the pourtalesiids are regarded as adaptations to burrowing and appear to be correlated with test elongation. The family is represented in the northern Atlantic only by 'advanced' genera (Echinosigra, Pourtalesia and Solenocystis) with very elongated tests.  相似文献

An osteological study and a taxonomic diagnosis are presented for the mesopelagic, oviparous ophidioid fish genus Brotulataenia. Its relationships are probably with a large group of benthic deep-sea oviparous genera. Brotulataenia has been known previously from three North Atlantic specimens assigned to two species. The present study is based on 33 specimens from the North and South Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Indian Ocean, and placed in four species, two of which are described as new. Two species are excessively elongate and are interpreted as being derived forms; they are lighter in color than are the two short-bodied species and may live higher in the water column.  相似文献

Molecular analyses of the sediment of the 11000-m deep Mariana Trench   总被引:10,自引:1,他引:10
We have obtained sediment samples from the world's deepest sea-bottom, the Mariana Trench challenger point at a depth of 10 898 m, using the new unmanned submersible Kaiko. DNA was extracted from the sediment, and DNA fragments encoding several prokaryotic ribosomal RNA small-subunit sequences and pressure-regulated gene clusters, typically identifed in deep-sea adapted bacteria, were amplifed by the polymerase chain reaction. From the sequencing results, at least two kinds of bacterial 16S rRNAs closely related to those of the genus Pseudomonas and deep-sea adapted marine bacteria, and archaeal 16S rRNAs related to that of a planktonic marine archaeon were identifed. The sequences of the amplifed pressure-regulated clusters were more similar to those of deep-sea barophilic bacteria than those of barotolerant bacteria. These results suggest that deep-sea adapted barophilic bacteria, planktonic marine archaea, and some of the world's most widespread bacteria (the genus Pseudomonas) coexist on the world's deepest sea-bottom. Summary A new pennellid genus,Exopenna, is established on the basis of two specimens of a new species,E. crimmeni, recovered from a deep-sea cod,Antimora, caught in the North East Atlantic. It is ectoparasitic and is diagnosed by the combination of a straight body, tightly coiled egg sacs and flattened, plate-like antennary processes. Another new species,Peniculus elongatus, is described from Australian waters and new records ofP. fistula andLernaeenicus ramosus further increase the known pennellid fauna of that region. A preliminary analysis of the phylogenetic relationships of the pennellid genera is undertaken and a partially resolved cladogram produced which identifies the main generic groupings. ac]19850522  相似文献

A new deep-sea fish,Lepiochilichthys microlepis, is described based on a single specimen trawled in the Pacific off Aomori Prefecture, northernmost district of Honshu, Japan. This species differs from other members of the genusLeptochilichthys in its higher counts of lateral line scales, 64 vs. less than 55, and vertebrae, 58 (35+23) vs. 47–50 (27-30+18-21). A key to the species of the genus is given.  相似文献

The brine-seawater interface of the Kebrit Deep, northern Red Sea, was investigated for the presence of microorganisms using phylogenetic analysis combined with cultivation methods. Under strictly anaerobic culture conditions, novel halophiles were isolated. The new rod-shaped isolates belong to the halophilic genus Halanaerobium and are the first representatives of the genus obtained from deep-sea, anaerobic brine pools. Within the genus Halanaerobium, they represent new species which grow chemoorganotrophically at NaCl concentrations ranging from 5 to 34%. The cellular fatty acid compositions are consistent with those of other Halanaerobium representatives, showing unusually large amounts of Delta7 and Delta11 16:1 fatty acids. Phylogenetic analysis of the brine-seawater interface sample revealed the presence of various bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences dominated by cultivated members of the bacterial domain, with the majority affiliated with the genus Halanaerobium. The new Halanaerobium 16S rRNA clone sequences showed the highest similarity (99.9%) to the sequence of isolate KT-8-13 from the Kebrit Deep brine. In this initial survey, our polyphasic approach demonstrates that novel halophiles thrive in the anaerobic, deep-sea brine pool of the Kebrit Deep, Red Sea. They may contribute significantly to the anaerobic degradation of organic matter enriched at the brine-seawater interface.  相似文献

The diversity of thermophilic prokaryotes inhabiting deep-sea hot vents was actively studied over the last two decades. The ever growing interest is reflected in the exponentially increasing number of novel thermophilic genera described. The goal of this paper is to survey the progress in this field made in the years 2000–2005. In this period, representatives of several new taxa of hyperthermophilic archaea were obtained from deep-sea environments. Two of these isolates had phenotypic features new for this group of organisms: the presence of an outer cell membrane (the genus Ignicoccus) and the ability to grow anaerobically with acetate and ferric iron (the genus Geoglobus). Also, our knowledge on the diversity of thermophilic bacteria from deep-sea thermal environments extended significantly. The new bacterial isolates represented diverse bacterial divisions: the phylum Aquificae, the subclass Epsilonproteobacteria, the order Thermotogales, the families Thermodesulfobacteriaceae, Deferribacteraceae, and Thermaceae, and a novel bacterial phylum represented by the genus Caldithrix. Most of these isolates are obligate or facultative lithotrophs, oxidizing molecular hydrogen in the course of different types of anaerobic respiration or microaerobic growth. The existence and significant ecological role of some of new bacterial thermophilic isolates was initially established by molecular methods.  相似文献
