Studies on probabilistic discounting typically involve choosing between two outcomes of the same sign (i.e., positive or negative). Commonly, participants are given a choice between a smaller, certain gain and a larger, but uncertain gain, or (less commonly) the options may be a certain, smaller loss and an uncertain, but larger loss. In contrast, participants in this study had to make yes/no decisions as to whether they would accept a financial offer involving a combination of both a gain and a loss. This offer could be either a certain gain which, when accepted, could bring an uncertain larger loss, or a certain loss which, when accepted, could bring an uncertain larger gain. Despite the substantial differences between the alternatives posed in the present study and those in typical discounting studies, the same hyperboloid discounting function that describes the choice between certain and uncertain gains also accurately described choice in the situations presented in the present study. In addition, steeper discounting was observed with a larger uncertain gain than with a smaller uncertain gain. No amount effect was revealed with uncertain losses.  相似文献

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element in mammals. Dietary Se restriction or conditions of Se malabsorption lead to deficiency syndromes or exacerbate established diseases in humans and in many animal models. It is assumed that most, if not all, physiological actions of Se are mediated by selenocysteine (Sec) containing proteins. However, the exact role of particular selenoproteins for certain molecular pathways, for the metabolism of nutrients, hormones or cellular components and for the development and adaptive responses of the organism have often remained elusive. Through the use of transgenic animals, it becomes increasingly feasible to interfere specifically with the expression of single selenoproteins in certain tissues or at certain times. While some transgenic animals exhibit phenotypes that were expected from biochemical studies, in other instances the observed effects were a surprise in view of earlier hypotheses.  相似文献

A new method to differentiate an eukaryotic DNA population in terms of the frequency of cross-linking sites in each DNA or each class of DNA is presented. Selective cross-link formation can be introduced to a certain class of DNA or a certain region of DNA sequences by use of DNA cross-linking agents due to the differences in the frequency of cross-linking sites in eukaryotic DNA.  相似文献

Two new closely related methods for the determination of the minimal area of phytocenoses are proposed. These methods check and complete each other and consist in determination of the rooted frequency of species in a set of successively enlarged sample plots and calculation of either (I) the mean floristic similarity or of (2) the corrected homogeneity-coefficient for each set of frequency plots of a certain size. The plotting of the above values against the plot size shows that both the mean floristic similarity and the homogeneity-coefficient stop rising at a certain size of the plot, which corresponds to the minimal area. Further enlargement of the frequency plots causes dropping or oscillation of these indices around a certain value.  相似文献

The levels of certain amines (catecholamines, 5-HT, and ‘histamine’) and of certain enzymes (tyrosine hydroxylase, tryptophan hydroxylase, ChAc, or AChE) in whole brain or selected brain areas of rats and mice susceptible to audiogenic seizure have been compared with the levels in matched groups of non-sensitive animals. Sensitive groups included both those where susceptibility is inborn and those where it is induced by administration of methionine sulphoximine or thiosemicarbazide. No significant difference was found which could be correlated with susceptibility to audiogenic seizure.  相似文献

It is nearly universally thought that the kind of decision‐making competence that gives one a strong prima facie right to make one's own medical decisions essentially involves having an ability (or abilities) of some sort, or having a certain level or degree of ability (or abilities). When put under philosophical scrutiny, however, this kind of theory does not hold up. I will argue that being competent does not essentially involve abilities, and I will propose and defend a theory of decision‐making competence according to which one is competent only if one possesses a certain kind of rationality in making treatment decisions.  相似文献

Mice with uniparental disomies (uniparental duplications) for defined regions of certain chromosomes, or certain disomies, show a range of developmental abnormalities most of which affect growth. These defects can be attributed to incorrect dosages of maternal or paternal copies of imprinted genes lying within the regions involved. Combinations of certain partial disomies result in interactions between the imprinting effects that seemingly independently affect foetal and/or placental growth in different ways or modify neonatal and postnatal development. The findings are generally in accord with the 'conflict hypothesis' for the evolution of genomic imprinting but do not demonstrate common growth axes within which imprinted genes may interact. Instead, it would seem that any gene that favours embryonic/foetal development, at consequent cost to the mother, will have been subject to evolutionary selection for only paternal allele expression. Reciprocally, any gene that reduces embryonic/foetal growth to limit disadvantage to the mother will have been selected for only maternal allele expression. It is concluded that survival of the placenta is core to the evolution of imprinting.  相似文献

An electronic-topological approach has been used to define an active ambergris fragment (AAF) which correctly describes the presence (or absence) of the ambergris odour of all 181 compounds investigated. The AAF consists of one oxygen atom and three carbon atoms (alpha, beta, gamma) which are separated by certain key distances and which possess certain atomic charges. The C(alpha) atom must bear at least one hydrogen atom (H(alpha)) which is located at a certain distance from one of the unshared electronic pairs of the oxygen atom.  相似文献

Gene therapy for cystic fibrosis (CF) could potentially be accomplished with one of several recombinant virus vectors, including a murine retrovirus (MMuLV), adenovirus, or adeno-associated virus (AAV). All these vectors take advantage of their respective viruses' mechanisms for delivery of viral DNA to cells, evasion of lyosomal degradation, and optimization of the levels and duration of expression of viral (or vector) DNA. Each has its own unique life cycle, however. The differences among these viruses result in certain advantages and disadvantages, such as the requirement of retroviruses for active cell division, and the potential pathogenic effects from expression of certain adenovirus genes present in adenovectors. While no single vector may be optimal for CF gene therapy in humans, new techniques, such as receptor-mediated gene transfer, seek to take advantage of the desirable properties of one or more of the virus-based systems while avoiding certain potential hazards.  相似文献

Below the melting point temperature of lipids, artificial lipid membranes usually exist in the ordered gel phase. Above these temperatures lipid acyl chains become fluid and disordered (liquid-crystalline phase). Depending on the chemical composition of artificial membranes, phase separation may occur, leading to the formation of transient or stable membrane domains. A similar phase separation of lipids into ordered and disordered domains has been observed in natural membranes at physiological temperature range. Moreover, it has been reported that certain proteins prefer certain organization of lipids, as for example glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored proteins or Src family of tyrosine kinases. The aim of present review is to discuss the possibility that some lipid microdomains are induced or stabilized by lipid-binding proteins that under certain conditions, for example due to a rise of cytosolic Ca2+ or pH changes, may attach to the membrane surface, inducing clustering of lipid molecules and creation of ordered lipid microdomains. These domains may than attract other cytosolic proteins, either enzymes or regulatory proteins. It is, therefore, postulated that lipid microdomains play important roles within a cell, in signal transduction and enzymatic catalysis, and also in various pathological states, as Alzheimer's disease, anti-phosphatidylserine syndrome, or development of multidrug resistance of cancer cells.  相似文献

细菌的消毒剂耐药性指细菌与消毒剂多次接触后,使该类消毒剂的最小抑菌浓度或最小杀菌浓度升高的现象。细菌的消毒剂耐药性普遍存在,多种细菌可对一种消毒剂耐药,一种细菌可对多种消毒剂耐药。消毒剂选择件压力是耐药性产生的外在原因,产生的机制包括生化结构、遗传学途径和酶学途径。消毒剂耐药与抗生素耐药之间存在一定的关系。应加强研究,制定统一标准,加强监测,并制定合理应用消毒荆规范,以减少消毒剂耐药性的发生。  相似文献

This paper explores the ways in which particular individuals or groups are cast as problematically other at certain times by exploring the relationship between empathy and antipathy – identified as products of ‘resonance’, or a certain kind of responsiveness to embodied encounters with others and also to concerns, ideas and discourses that originate locally or from elsewhere. Consequent effects on subject-formation and affordances of social possibilities are explored through an intensive focus on one Muslim man. The notion of a ‘laminated subjectivity’ is presented and elucidated. Summary During the survey reported in Part I, it became apparent that vegetational shading affected the incidences of certain species. The extent to which the distribution of stream fauna is influenced by direct or indirect consequences of shade or illumination was examined and an attempt was made to determine which species or groups are affected.Three pairs of comparable sampling stations (stickles) were selected on the basis of their physical similarity, one of each pair being shaded and the other illuminated. Samples taken from these stations were compared and species found predominantly in shaded or exposed reaches were assessed.Although certain species appeared influenced in their distribution, it appears that the population density is minimally affected and there is no overall effect on any group or family.  相似文献

Previous studies on certain altered holo-isocytochromes c revealed a rho(-)-dependent degradation (RDD) phenotype, in which certain altered holo-iso-1-cytochromes c are at normal or nearly normal levels in rho+ strains, but are at low levels or absent in rho- strains, although wild-type holo-iso-1-cytochrome c is present at normal levels in both rho+ and related rho- strains. The diminished levels of altered holo-iso-1-cytochrome c are due to the rapid degradation that is carried out by a novel proteolytic pathway in the IMS of mitochondria. SUE1, a nuclear gene that encodes a mitochondrial protein, was identified with a genetic screen for mutants that diminish RDD. The levels of RDD and certain other types of altered holo-iso-1-cytochrome c were elevated in rho- sue1 strains. Also, rho+ sue1 strains containing certain altered holo-iso-1-cytochromes c grew better on non-fermentable carbon sources than the corresponding rho+ SUE1 strains. These results indicate that Sue1p may play an important role in the degradation of abnormal holo-iso-1-cytochrome c in the mitochondria.  相似文献

A food web in a chemostat is considered in which an arbitrary number of competitor populations compete for a single, essential, nonreproducing, growth-limiting substrate, and an arbitrary number of predator populations prey on some or all of the competitor populations. Although any number of predator populations may prey on the same competitor population, each predator population preys on only one competitor population. The dynamics of substrate uptake is modeled by Lotka-Volterra or Michaelis-Menten (Holling type I or II), but the dynamics of competitor uptake is restricted to Lotka-Volterra. Based on certain parameters, the model predicts the asymptotic survival or extinction of each of the different populations and suggests how competitor and/or predator populations could successfully invade the chemostat with or without causing a diverse ecosystem to crash. Similarly, it suggests how the elimination of certain populations could result in a more diverse or less diverse system.  相似文献

In this article, we present what we believe to be some of the proximate and selective mechanisms that allowed certain types of human depression to have evolved. Certain adult depressive patients, in losing situations, have an inability to “switch off” their submissive or yielding behavior with its concomitant cognitive and emotional components. Thus, although normal individuals accept defeat as an inevitable aspect of ritual agonistic encounters, certain depressed individuals do not.We believe the failure to terminate the yielding subroutine of ritual agonistic behavior (YS/RAB) is the proximate mechanism that underlies certain types of human depression. Also, we show that through the selective mechanisms of difference amplification and kin selection, certain types of depressive illness may be adaptive to kin. Thus, selection could have operated at the family as well as the individual level, permitting certain types of depression to have evolved. The notion that depression is the result of selective mechanisms is supported by the prevalence of depression in human populations.  相似文献

Using immunolocalization techniques, electron microscopy, and gel electrophoresis combined with immunoblotting, we have noted remarkable interspecies differences in the expression of cytokeratins in certain nonepithelial cells. In the present study we describe, in two taxonomically distant vertebrate species, the African clawed toad Xenopus laevis and man, endothelial and smooth muscle cells which express cytokeratin intermediate filaments (IFs), in addition to vimentin and/or desmin IFs. In Xenopus, all endothelia seem to produce both vimentin and cytokeratin IFs. As well, certain smooth muscle bundles located in the periphery of the walls of the esophagus and the urinary bladder produce small amounts of cytokeratin IFs in addition to IFs containing vimentin or desmin or both. The amphibian equivalents of human cytokeratins 8 and 18 have been identified in these nonepithelial tissues. In human endothelial cells, immunocytochemical reactions with certain cytokeratin antibodies are restricted to a rare subset of blood vessels. Vessels of this type were first noted in synovial and submucosal tissues, but also occur in some other locations. Cytokeratins have also been detected in certain groups of smooth muscles, such as those present in the walls of some blood vessels in synovial tissue and umbilical cord. Here, the synthesis of low levels of cytokeratins 8 and 18, sometimes with traces of cytokeratin 19, has been demonstrated in smooth muscle cells by colocalization with myogenic marker proteins, such as desmin and/or the smooth-muscle-specific isoform of alpha-actin. Possible reasons for the differences in cytokeratin expression between adjacent endothelia in man, and smooth-muscle structures in both species, as well as biologic and histodiagnostic implications of these findings, are discussed.  相似文献
