Hagfish are the most pleisiomorphic extant craniates, and based on the similarity of ionic concentrations between their internal milieu and seawater (SW), they have long been touted as a model for osmo- and ionoconformation. As a result, the lack of direct symmetry between hagfish plasma and the environment with respect to [Na+], [Cl], [Mg2+], and [Ca2+] have been left largely unexplored. In order to determine the capacity of hagfish to regulate their blood compartment, we exposed Pacific hagfish (Eptatretus stoutii) to 24, 32, 40, and 48 g/l salinity for 48 h, as well as to two treatments where a portion of the water [Na+] was replaced with either Mg2+ or Ca2+ at constant salinity for up to 6 days. Following exposure, we measured plasma ion status, pH, and total carbon dioxide (TCO2). As expected, our results indicated that hagfish had no capacity to regulate plasma osmolality, [Na+], or [Cl], but they did maintain plasma [Mg2+] and [Ca2+] nearly constant despite fluctuation of environmental salinity or elevated water [Mg2+] and [Ca2+] (two- and sevenfold, respectively). Furthermore, exposure to elevated water [Mg2+] and [Ca2+] resulted in a large increase of plasma TCO2 with little to no increase of plasma pH. We concluded that hagfish may control plasma [Mg2+] and [Ca2+] at levels below that of their environment via secretion of HCO3 , similar to the mechanisms described in the intestine of teleosts. We speculate that secretion of HCO3 likely evolved to maintain plasma [Mg2+] and [Ca2+] below environmental levels (both of which negatively affect nervous function and muscle contraction if elevated), and was an exaptation for the development of water-absorption mechanisms in the intestine of marine osmoregulators. The ancestors of modern hagfish are thought to have never entered freshwater, thus investigations into their ionoregulatory ability potentially have profound implications regarding the evolution of fishes.  相似文献

Embryos of the freshwater common pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis develop to hatch within 10 days under control conditions (22°C, Miami-Dade tap water) and this development is impaired by removal of ambient calcium. In contrast, embryos did not exhibit dependence upon an ambient HCO3 /CO3 2− source, developing and hatching in HCO3 /CO3 2−-free water at rates comparable to controls. Post-metamorphic, shell-laying embryos exhibited a significant saturation-type calcium uptake as a function of increasing ambient calcium concentration. However, changes in ambient bicarbonate concentration did not influence calcium or apparent titratable alkalinity uptake. There was a distinct shift from no significant flux in pre-metamorphic embryos to net uptake of calcium in post-metamorphic stages as indicated by an increased uptake from the micro-environment surrounding the egg mass and increased net uptake in 24-h, whole egg mass flux measurements. Furthermore, HCO3 /CO3 2− acquisition as measured by titratable alkalinity flux is at least partially attributable to an endogenous carbonate source that is associated with acid extrusion. Thus, calcium requirements for embryonic shell formation are met via uptake but HCO3 /CO3 2−, which is also necessary for shell formation is acquired in part from endogenous sources with no detectable correlation to ambient HCO3 /CO3 2− availability.  相似文献

Wheat leaf growth is known to be spatially affected by salinity. The altered spatial distribution of leaf growth under saline conditions may be associated with spatial changes in tissue mineral elements. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial distributions of mineral elements and their net deposition rates in the elongating and mature zones of leaf 4 of the main stem of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Lona) during its linear growth phase under saline soil conditions. Plants were grown in an illitic-chloritic silty loam with 0 and 120 mM NaCl. Three days after emergence of leaf 4, sampling was begun at 3 and 13 h into the 16-h light period. Spatial distributions of fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW), and Na+, K+, Cl, NO 3, Ca2+, Mg2+, total P, and total N in the elongating and mature tissues were determined on a millimeter scale. The patterns of spatial distribution of Na+, Cl, K+, NO3 , and Ca2+ in the growing leaves were affected by salinity, while those of Mg2+, total P, and total N were not. Sodium, K+, Cl, Ca2+, Mg2+, and total N concentrations (mmol · kg−1 FW) were consistently higher at 120 mM NaCl than at 0 mM NaCl along the leaf axis from the leaf base, whereas NO3 concentration was lower at 120 mM NaCl. Deposition rates of all nutrients were greatest in the elongation zone. The elongation zone was the strongest sink for mineral elements in the leaf tissues. Local net deposition rates of Na+, Cl, Ca2+, and Mg2+ (mmol · kg−1 FW · h−1) in the most actively elongating zone were enhanced by 120 mM NaCl, whereas for NO3 this was depressed. The lower supply of NO 3 to growing leaves may be responsible for the inhibition of growth under saline conditions. Higher tissue concentrations of Na+ and Cl may cause ion imbalance but probably did not result in ion toxicity in the growing leaves. Potassium, Ca2+, Mg2+, total P, and total N are less plausibly responsible for the reduction in leaf growth in this study. Higher tissue K+ and Ca2+ concentrations at 120 mM NaCl are probably due to the presence of high Ca2+ in the soil of this study. Received: 13 March 1997 / Accepted: 9 June 1997  相似文献

In this study, the relationship between water quality (as represented by major inorganic ion concentrations) and land use characteristics is examined for a small river basin which runs through the urbanizing area of central Japan. Water samples were taken from 24 sites at base flow and analyzed, and the proportions of the various land uses associated with the respective drainage basins were calculated using a digital land-use map (scale: 1:25000). The electrical conductivity (EC) of the water ranged from 84.5 to 600 μS cm−1. Ca2+ and Na+ were the major cations, accounting for 77% of all cations. Among the anions, HCO3 was dominant (56%), followed by Cl (24%), SO4 2− (13%) and NO3 (7%). Applying principal component analysis to land use in the drainage basin yielded three principal components. The first principal component expressed the degree of occupation by residential areas, the second indicated the degree of urban developing area (i.e., fast-developing and industrial areas), and the third showed the degree of coverage with farmland and green space. The residential area showed significant positive correlations with K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, NO3 , HCO3 , EC and TMI (total major ions). Urban developing area showed significant positive correlations with Ca2+, Cl, HCO3 , EC and TMI as well as weak negative correlations with NO3 and SO4 2−. Industrial area showed weak positive correlations with Na+ and Cl and a moderate negative correlation with NO3 . Farmland showed significant positive correlations with NO3 and SO4 2−; these ions are present due to fertilizers and the biological activity of plants. Forest area is inversely related to almost all ions, indicating the need for this form of land use in order to maintain river water quality.  相似文献

This paper summarizes investigations on the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA) in the gills of the osmoregulating shore crabCarcinus maenas. Carbonic anhydrase, an enzyme catalyzing the reversible hydration of CO2 to HCO3 and H+, is localized with highest activities in the posterior salt-transporting gills of the shore crab- and here CA activity is strongly dependent on salinity. Contrary to the earlier hypothesis established for the blue crabCallinectes sapidus that cytoplasmic branchial CA provides the counter ions HCO3 and H+ for apical exchange against Na+ and Cl, the involvement of CA in NaCl uptake mechanisms can be excluded inCarcinus. Differential and density gradient centrifugations indicate that branchial CA is a predominantly membrane-associated protein. Branchial CA was greatly inhibited by the sulfonamide acetazolamide (AZ) Ki=2.4·10−8 mol/l). Using the preparation of the isolated perfused gill, application of 10−4 mol/l AZ resulted in an 80% decrease of CO2/HCO3 excretion. Thus we conclude that CA is localized in plasma membranes, maintaining the CO2 gradient by accelerating adjustment of the pH-dependent CO2/HCO3 equilibrium.  相似文献

Summary The response of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) to residual soil salinity as influenced by the ionic composition of two different saline waters (ECw=3.1 dS/m, referenced at 25°C) and rain water, was investigated in a greenhouse experiment with three successive plantings of lettuce in the same soil. One of the saline waters was saturated with gypsum (SO4=35 mol (−)m−3) and the other contained SO4 at 15 mol (−)m−3 and Na and Cl at 18 and 14 mol (±)m−3, respectively (mixed water). All waters were applied with a 0.3 leaching fraction. Soil water salinity and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) increased in both cases using saline waters. The effect of mixed saline water was higher and became more marked after each planting, resulting from higher contribution of Na and Cl to soil salinity. With both saline waters, soil solution became saturated with gypsum. At first planting, gypsum saturated and mixed waters produced fresh yield increases of 15 and 24%, respectively, relative to rain water. At second planting, however, there was reduction in yield of 11 and 22%, respectively, relative to rain water; at third planting yield reduced by 22 and 76% with gypsum saturated and mixed water, respectively.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to study the chemical composition of the precipitates found in the intestine of Dicentrarchus labrax and the source of HCO3 secreted into the intestinal lumen. The chemical analysis was performed by employing the potentiometric double titration method and by means of an electron microscope coupled with a spectrometer and X-ray powder diffraction. The results obtained suggest the presence of very insoluble intestinal precipitates, presumably formed by a mixture of CaCO3 and MgCO3, with a higher quantity of the former with respect to the latter. HCO3 secretion rate was investigated with the aid of the pH stat method in isolated tissues mounted in Ussing chamber, where the transepithelial electrical parameters were also measured. When the serosal surface of the intestinal mucosa was bathed in HCO3 -Ringer bubbled with 1% CO2 in O2 while the serosal surface was bathed in HCO3 free Ringer solution bubbled with pure O2, bicarbonate secretion proceeded at an almost stable rate of 0.9 ± 0.05 μeq cm−2 h−1 for about 3 h while I sc maintained a constant value of 38 ± 1.5 μA cm−2. The carbonic anhydrase inhibitor ethoxyzolamide elicited a progressive reduction of HCO3 secretion that was about 75% of the initial value after 80 min. When serosal HCO3 –CO2 saline was substituted with Hepes–O2 saline base secretion progressively declined reaching a value of about 20% of the initial value. It was also strongly inhibited when Na+ was substituted with the impermeant cation choline and when either DIDS or ouabain were added to the basolateral side. These results suggest that most of the bicarbonate secreted is of extracellular source and is probably transported across the basolateral membrane by both Na+ independent mechanism and Na+ dependent transporter, presumably a NaHCO3 cotransport.  相似文献

The influence of a CO2/HCO 3-buffered medium on intracellular pH regulation of gill pavement cells from freshwater rainbow trout was examined in monolayers grown in primary culture on glass coverslips; intracellular pH (pHi) was monitored by continuous spectrofluorometric recording from cells loaded with 2′,7′-bis(2-carboxyethyl)-5(6)-carboxy-fluoroscein. When cells in HEPES-buffered medium at normal pH=7.70 were transferred to normal CO2/HCO 3-buffered medium {P CO2=3.71 mmHg, [HCO 3]= 6.1 mmol l−1, extracellular pH (pHe)=7.70}, they exhibited a brief acidosis but subsequently regulated the same pHi (∼7.41) as in HEPES. Buffer capacity (β) increased by the expected amount (5.5–8.0 slykes) based on intracellular [HCO 3], and was unaffected by most drugs and treatments. However, after transfer to high P CO2=11.15 mmHg, [HCO 3]= 18.2 mmol l−1 at the same pHe=7.70, the final regulated pHi was elevated (∼7.53). The rate of correction of alkalosis caused by washout of this high P CO2, high-HCO 3 medium was unaffected by removal of extracellular Cl. Removal of extracellular Na+ lowered resting pHi and greatly inhibited the rate of pHi recovery from acidosis. Bafilomycin A1 (3 μmol l−1) had no effect on these responses. However amiloride (0.2 mmol l−1) inhibited recovery from acidosis caused by washout of an ammonia prepulse, but did not affect resting pHi, the latter differing from the response in HEPES where amiloride also lowered resting pHi. Similarly 4-acetamido-4′- isothiocyanatostilbene-2,2′-disulfonic acid, sodium salt (0.1 mmol l−1) did not affect resting pHi but slowed the rate of recovery from acidosis, though to a lesser extent than amiloride. Removal of extracellular Cl also slowed the rate of recovery but greatly increased β by an unknown mechanism; when this was taken into account, H+ extrusion rate was unaffected. These results are consistent with the presence of Na+-(HCO 3)N co-transport and/or Na+-dependent HCO 3/Cl exchange, in addition to Na+/H+ exchange, as mechanisms contributing to “housekeeping” pHi regulation in gill cells in CO2/HCO 3 media, whereas only Na+/H+ exchange is seen in HEPES. Both Na+-independent Cl/HCO 3 exchange and V-type H+-ATPase mechanisms appear to be absent from these cells cultured in isotonic media. Accepted: 30 November 1999  相似文献

A study about the relationship between the physical–chemical parameters and the calcium carbonate balance between the haemolymph fluid and mantle calcareous structures was carried out in Anodonta cygnea. An intense peak of HCO3 and a highest pH in December–January months may be understood as a preparation period for creating alkaline conditions. An intense pH decrease from January to February in parallel with the HCO3 reduction seems to indicate the beginning process of carbonate precipitation. On the other hand, the following calcium and HCO3 increases in February–May associated with a continuous and gradual pH fall profile may infer two combined aspects: calcium and HCO3 absorption from external environment and a simultaneous intense calcium carbonate deposition in the haemolymph. So, the pCO2 peak in this period reflects a subsequent result on equilibrium balance between HCO3 absorption and deposition. The only significant pO2 increase in the next period, from February to June, is related with an energetic increase to support the metabolic activity favouring the posterior intense pCO2 peaks. The extended time of CO2 production in the haemolymph from May to November should induce an increased metabolic acidosis with subsequent intense formation of both HCO3 and Ca2+ ions in the same period. This seems to result from CaCO3 deposits dissolution in the haemolymph, the most direct calcareous source. Additionally, the later increase of metabolic succinic acid during autumn may greatly potentiate this acidosis increasing the dissolution process. Consequently, the pH profile present two simultaneous alkaline peaks in July and October, probably due to a strong HCO3 release from the CaCO3 dissolution. So, the present seasonal results indicate that in the freshwater bivalve A. cygnea, the low metabolism with higher pH from the early winter is the main cause which may favour a calcareous precipitation, while the high metabolism with lower pH from the early summer may function as an inductor of calcareous dissolution in the haemolymph.  相似文献

The decrease in the saturation state of seawater, Ω, following seawater acidification, is believed to be the main factor leading to a decrease in the calcification of marine organisms. To provide a physiological explanation for this phenomenon, the effect of seawater acidification was studied on the calcification and photosynthesis of the scleractinian tropical coral Stylophora pistillata. Coral nubbins were incubated for 8 days at three different pH (7.6, 8.0, and 8.2). To differentiate between the effects of the various components of the carbonate chemistry (pH, CO32−, HCO3, CO2, Ω), tanks were also maintained under similar pH, but with 2-mM HCO3added to the seawater. The addition of 2-mM bicarbonate significantly increased the photosynthesis in S. pistillata, suggesting carbon-limited conditions. Conversely, photosynthesis was insensitive to changes in pH and pCO2. Seawater acidification decreased coral calcification by ca. 0.1-mg CaCOg−1 d−1 for a decrease of 0.1 pH units. This correlation suggested that seawater acidification affected coral calcification by decreasing the availability of the CO32− substrate for calcification. However, the decrease in coral calcification could also be attributed either to a decrease in extra- or intracellular pH or to a change in the buffering capacity of the medium, impairing supply of CO32− from HCO3.  相似文献

Summary Heterotrophic plantlets obtained by in vitro propagation are biochemically different compared to autotrophic plantlets. When heterotrophic plantlets are transferred to ex vitro conditions, higher irradiance levels are generally applied. Irradiance levels higher than those used in vitro lead to oxidative stress symptoms, that can be counteracted by CO2 concentrations above normal. We analyzed the stability and activity of Rubisco and leaf-soluble sugars and starch contents in chestnut plantlets transferred from in vitro to ex vitro conditions under four treatments obtained by associating two irradiances of 150 (low light, LL) and 300 (high light, HL) μmolm−2s−1, respectively three and six times in vitro irradiance, with two CO2 levels of 350 (low CO2, LCO2) and 700 (high CO2, HCO2) μll−1. In in vitro plantlets it was possible to immunodetect apparent products of degradation of Rubisco large subunit (LSU). In ex vitro plantlets, these degradation products were no longer dtected except under LL associated with LCO2. The decrease in soluble sugars and starch in plantlets under HL HCO2 gave an indication of a faster acquisition of autotrophic characteristics. However, under the same treatment, a down-regulation of Rubisco activity was observed. From the results taken as a whole, two aspects seem to be confirmed: HL HCO2 is more efficient in inducing an autotrophic behavior in chestnut ex vitro plantlets; actively growing systems as ex vitro plantlets reflect the down-regulation of Rubisco by HCO2 without accumulation of carbohydrates.  相似文献

The mechanisms for acquisition of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the red macroalga Gracilaria gaditana nom. prov. have been investigated. The capacity for HCO3 use by an extracellular carbonic anhydrase (CA; EC 4.2.1.1), and by an anion exchanger with similar properties to that of red blood cells (AE1), has been quantified. It was illustrated by comparing O2 evolution rates with those theoretically supported by CO2, as well as by photosynthesis-pH curves. Both external and internal CA, and a direct uptake were involved in HCO3 use, since photosynthesis and pH evolution were affected by acetazolamide, 6-ethoxyzolamide (inhibitors of external and total CA, respectively) and 4,4′-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2′-disulfonate, (DIDS; an inhibitor of HCO3 exchanger protein). The activity of the external CA was detected by a potentiometric method and by an alternative method based on the study of O2 evolution after addition of CO2 and acetazolamide. The latter method showed a residual photosynthetic rate due to direct HCO3 use. Inhibitors caused a reduction in the pH compensation points in pH-drift experiments. The CO2 compensation points for photosynthesis increased when the inhibitors were applied, indicating a suppresion of the pathways involved in the carbon-concentrating mechanism. The net photosynthesis rates as a function of DIC concentration displayed a biphasic pattern that could be supported by the occurrence of the two mechanisms of HCO3 use. The potential contribution to HCO3 acquisition by the DIDS-sensitive mechanism was higher after culturing at a high pH. Our results suggest that the HCO3 use by Gracilaria gaditana is carried out by the two DIC uptake mechanisms. These operate simultaneously with different affinities for DIC, the indirect HCO3 use by an external CA activity being the main pathway. The presence of a carbon-concentrating mechanism confers eco-physiological advantages in a fluctuating ecosystem subjected daily to high pHs and low DIC concentrations. Pomacea (Ampullariidae) snails, commonly referred to as apple snails, serve as prey for many freshwater-dependent predators, and some species are highly invasive. Identifying limits to apple snail distribution and abundance are pertinent to understanding their ecology. Calcium (Ca2+) availability and pH generally influences freshwater snail populations, yet scant data exist for Pomacea snails. We measured 6-week change in shell length (ΔSL) in P. paludosa in two laboratory experiments with varying Ca2+ and pH levels. ΔSL was significantly higher in ≥28 mg Ca2+/l compared with treatments ≤14 mg/l. Snails from populations living in low Ca2+/pH waters did not appear genetically predisposed at growing faster in these conditions. Smallest ΔSL was in snails treated with 3.6 mg Ca2+/l and pH < 6.5 water; these snails had signs of shell erosion. Shell crush weights (CWs) were lowest for snails grown in the lowest Ca2+/pH treatment. Smaller shells and lower CWs have implications for predation vulnerability and reproductive success. Our results are consistent with reports associating relatively low snail densities with relatively low Ca2+/pH waters, and they are consistent with the geographic distribution of P. paludosa as related to the underlying water chemistry as influenced by geology.  相似文献

Ruppia cirrhosa, a temperate seagrass growing in brackish water, featured a high capacity for HCO3 utilisation, which could operate over a wide pH range (from 7.5 up to 9.5) with maintained efficiency. Tris buffer inhibited this means of HCO3 utilisation in a competitive manner, while addition of acetazolamide, an inhibitor of extracellular carbonic anhydrase activity, caused a 40–50% inhibition. A mechanism involving periplasmic carbonic anhydrase-catalysed HCO3 dehydration in acid zones, followed by a (probably diffusive) transport of the formed CO2 across the plasma membrane was thus, at least partly, responsible for the HCO3 utilisation. This mechanism, which comprises a CO2-concentrating mechanism (CCM) associated with the plasma membrane, is thus shown for the first time in an aquatic angiosperm. Additional mechanisms involved in the Tris-sensitive HCO3 utilisation could be direct HCO3 uptake (e.g., in an H+/HCO3 symport) or (more likely) non-catalysed HCO3 dehydration in the acid zones. Based on these results, and on earlier investigations on Zostera marina, a general model for analysis of HCO3 utilisation mechanisms of seagrasses is suggested. In this model, three `systems' for HCO3 utilisation are defined which are characterised (and can to some extent be quantified) by their capability to operate at high pH in combination with their response to acetazolamide and Tris. Some consequences of the fact that HCO3 utilisation and osmoregulation probably depend on the same energy source (ATP via H+-ATPase in the plasma membrane) are discussed. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Higher atmospheric concentrations of CO2 can offset the negative effects of flooding or salinity on plant species, but previous studies have focused on mature, rather than regenerating vegetation. This study examined how interacting environments of CO2, water regime, and salinity affect seed germination and seedling biomass of floating freshwater marshes in the Mississippi River Delta, which are dominated by C3 grasses, sedges, and forbs. Germination density and seedling growth of the dominant species depended on multifactor interactions of CO2 (385 and 720 μl l−1) with flooding (drained, +8-cm depth, +8-cm depth-gradual) and salinity (0, 6% seawater) levels. Of the three factors tested, salinity was the most important determinant of seedling response patterns. Species richness (total = 19) was insensitive to CO2. Our findings suggest that for freshwater marsh communities, seedling response to CO2 is species-specific and secondary to salinity and flooding effects. Elevated CO2 did not ameliorate flooding or salinity stress. Consequently, climate-related changes in sea level or human-caused alterations in hydrology may override atmospheric CO2 concentrations in driving shifts in this plant community. The results of this study suggest caution in making extrapolations from species-specific responses to community-level predictions without detailed attention to the nuances of multifactor responses.  相似文献

Chinese and Mongolian saline lakes: a limnological overview   总被引:8,自引:2,他引:6
W. D. Williams 《Hydrobiologia》1991,210(1-2):39-66
More than half of China's lakes are saline (viz. have salinities > 3 g L−1). Most salt lakes are in northwestern China (Tibet, Qinghai, Sinkiang, Inner Mongolia). Most Mongolian salt lakes are in the west of that country. Tectonic movements have been of the greatest importance in lake origins, but aeolian activity and deflation have also played a role. Many salt lakes in Qinghai-Tibet lie at altitudes > 4 000 m.a.s.l.; Aiding Hu (Sinkiang) lies at −154 m.a.s.l. Again, many lakes are large in area and deep. Small, shallow lakes are also common. Dimictic thermal patterns prevail in deep lakes, polymictic patterns in shallow ones. The highest salinity recorded is 555 g L−1. The salinity of Qinghai Lake, the largest Chinese salt lake, is 14 g L−1, but mean lake salinity on the northern Tibetan plateau is about an order of magnitude greater. Lop Nor has a salinity of ∼ 5 g L−1. Dominant ions are Na and Cl; Mg, Ca, SO4 and HCO3 + CO3 are important in certain lakes. Most major ions originate by weathering and leaching from rocks. pH values are generally high (often > 9.0). There are no bird or fish species confined to salt lakes, though many are associated with lakes of low or moderate salinity. Artemia occurs widely inland and in coastal salt pans, but is the only major macroinvertebrate of highly saline lakes. In lakes of only low to moderate salinity, invertebrate communities comprise widespread halotolerant freshwater forms and halophiles, some regionally endemic. Submerged and emergent macrophytes occur in lakes of low salinity, but phytoplankton species are more halotolerant. Ctenocladus circinatus, a green alga, is known from a Tibetan salt lake with a salinity of 200 g L−1. There is a dearth of basic limnological information on Chinese and Mongolian salt lakes. More work in particular is needed on a variety of geographically widespread lakes to (a) document seasonal physico-chemical events, and (b) compile comprehensive biological inventories of taxa present. Chinese salt lakes are significant sites for palaeoclimatic research, for conservation purposes, and for the resolution of several important biological questions (especially of an ecological and biogeographical sort). They also have important economic values. Unfortunately, the natural existence of many appears to be threatened by decreased inflows, largely the result of human impact on catchments.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to describe the biogeochemical characteristics in the waters of Mongolian lakes, particularly those related to parameters limiting phytoplankton growth and the trophic state. Investigations into the distribution of chemical and biological parameters were carried out in the following 18 lakes: Har Us, Har, Hovsgol, Achit, Dalai, Bayan, Tolbo, Holboo, Bust, Sangiyn Dalai, Tunamal, Dorgon, Uureg, Telmen, Hyargas, Uvs, Erkhel and Oygon, all of which showed a wide range of salinity between 0.16 and 24.9 g l−1. Lake water was classified into four types: six fresh (less than 0.5 g l−1 salinity), three subsaline (0.5–3 g l−1), seven hyposaline (3–20 g l−1) and two mesosaline (20–50 g l−1) lakes. Predominant cations and anions in the order of dominance were Ca, Mg > Na > K and HCO3 > SO4, Cl in freshwater lakes, Na > Mg > Ca, K and HCO3, Cl > SO4 in subsaline lakes, and Na > Mg > K, Ca and Cl, SO4 > HCO3 in hyposaline and mesosaline lakes. Nitrogenous and phosphorus nutrients in the waters were low, seemingly caused by the low loads from their watersheds, where the ground was free of vegetation with an extremely low level of human activity. The present investigations revealed some 234 taxa of phytoplankton and 38 of zooplankton. The PC:PN:PP stoichiometric ratio by weight was (22–202):(3–27):1. Phosphorus was assessed as the potential limiting parameter in eight lakes, nitrogen in six and both nutrients in four others. Twelve lakes showed an oligotrophic character, while six were mesotrophic type. The six oligotrophic lakes seemed to be subject to phosphorus limiting phytoplankton growth, four to nitrogen and two to both limitations. In the mesotrophic lakes, on the other hand, phosphorus limitation was verified in two lakes, nitrogen in two others and both in two lakes.  相似文献

Nitrite influx into crayfish showed saturation kinetics, supporting a carrier-mediated uptake. Addition of 4,4′-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2′-disulfonate (DIDS: at 10−5, 10−4 and 10−3 M) and bumetanide (at 10−5 M and 10−4 M) to the ambient water did not significantly affect nitrite influx. Rather than suggesting that neither Cl/HCO3 exchange nor K+/Na+/2Cl cotransport were involved in the transport, this may reflect that the gill cuticle has a low permeability to the pharmacological agents, or that the sensitivity of the transport mechanism to the inhibitors is low. Nitrite accumulation in the haemolymph was significantly decreased during hypercapnic conditions compared to normocapnic conditions. This supports the idea that an acid–base regulatory decrease in Cl(influx)/HCO3 (efflux) induced by hypercapnia should decrease NO2 uptake if NO2 and Cl share this uptake route. The respiratory acidosis caused by exposure to hypercapnia alone was partially compensated by HCO3 accumulation in the haemolymph. Combined exposure to hypercapnia and nitrite improved pH recovery, mainly by augmenting the [HCO3 ] increase, but also by decreasing haemolymph PCO2. Exposure to nitrite in normocapnic water induced an initial increase in haemolymph [HCO3 ] and later also a decrease in PCO2. Thus, the improved acid-base compensation during combined hypercapnia and nitrite exposure was an amplification of this nitriteinduced response. Haemolymph base excess rose much more than haemolymph [Ca], suggesting that transfer of acid-base equivalents between animal and water was more important than H+ buffering by exoskeletal CaCO3 in mediating the increase in haemolymph [HCO3 ]. Fluctuating hydrochemistry, as a result of extreme hydrological regimes, imposes major physiological constraints on the biota of ephemeral saline lakes. While the inverse relationship between salinity and zooplankton species richness is well-known across salinity gradients, few studies have documented closely the response of zooplankton to seasonal changes in salinity. Weekly sampling during two flood seasons at Sua Pan, an intermittent saline lake in central Botswana demonstrated the importance of spatial and temporal salinity gradients for crustacean community composition, associated with a decline in species richness, from 11 to three species. Conductivity ranged between 320 and 125,800 μS cm−1 during seasonal flooding; changing from dominance by and , Ca2+ and Mg2+, at the beginning of the floods, to NaCl dominated waters as the lake dried out and salinities increased. pH estimates generally ranged between 8.6 and 10, with maximum values recorded during initial flooding. Crustaceans comprised mainly Branchinella spinosa, Moina belli, Lovenula africana and Limnocythere tudoranceai, all of which occurred across a wide range of salinities, while halotolerant freshwater species (Metadiaptomus transvaalensis, Leptestheria striatochonca and the ostracods Plesiocypridopsis aldabrae, Cypridopsis newtoni and a newly identified Potamocypris species) disappeared above conductivities of 1,500 μS cm−1. A unique crustacean composition in southern Africa was attributed to Sua Pans’ rare chemical composition among southern African saline lakes; flood waters on Sua Pan contained a higher proportion of Na+ and , and less K+, Mg2+ and than over 80% of records from salt pans elsewhere in southern African. The freshwater species of crustaceans in Sua Pan were similar to those found in other southern Africa lakes, and these similarities decreased in lakes with higher pH and proportions of Na, and less SO4 and Mg in their chemical composition. The predominant saline tolerant species on Sua Pan, however, showed a greater similarity to those in saline lakes in southern and East Africa with higher proportions of and, particularly, Mg2+ in their chemical composition. Summary “Travertines” (tufa pinnacles) of the Miocene Riescrater basin have been investigated to test whether carbon, oxygen and strontium isotopes can be used for the recognition of fossil subaquatic spring deposits in high-alkalinity settings. The Ries basin “travertines” have so far been interpreted as a product of subaerial to sublacustrine artesian springs discharging calcareous groundwater into a freshwater or slightly saline lake. However, recent studies on microfacies and fabric development propose a formation at Ca2+-supplying sublacustrine springs of a soda lake. Geochemical analysis of “travertines” of the castle rock Wallerstein, including “sickle-cell” limestones, thrombolites, non-skeletal stromatolites, and speleothems, now support the latter interpretation. High Sr contents surpassing that of the contemporaneously formed dolomitic algal biocherms of the lake shore point to an aragonitic composition of primary precipitates. the δ13C values of diagenetically moderately to weakly altered “travertine” facies types are in the same range of the impact-brecciated Upper Jurassic limestones, thus, are inconsistent with a mixture of soil-derived CO2 and CO3 2− from the Jurassic limestones. In addition, the δ18O values are too high to support a significant contribution of CO3 2− by meteoric waters seeping through marine Jurassic limestones. Instead the δ13C and δ18O values indicate an origin of the CO3 2− from a lake water body characterized by evaporation. This is consistent with a sodium-rich lake water as indicated by high sodium contents of aragonitic algal bioherms of the lake shore. The87Sr/86Sr isotope ratio of the “travertine” mound carbonates are consistent with calculated mixing of spring waters discharging from the crystalline basement and lake water high in dissolved inorganic carbon. This points to an origin of the divalent cations from sublacustrine spring waters. In turn,87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios of green algal reef carbonates of the lake shore are closer to that of the Upper Jurassic carbonates, due to surface run-off from surrounding limestone uplands.  相似文献
