Bouts of pelage cleaning can be readily evoked in laboratory rodents under conditions of exposure to novelty. Such novelty-induced grooming is described as stereotyped and rostro-caudal in its progression. The patterned structure of novelty-induced grooming makes it particularly attractive for research on the organizational and motivational underpinnings of co-ordinated behaviour. Micro-characteristics of stereotyped novelty-induced grooming bouts were studied in 27 female Wistar rats that were exposed to a novel arena with shelters for a period of 15 min. The order of grooming acts within the initial bouts was rostro-caudal, but subsequent bouts became progressively disorganized in their sequencing. The observed pattern of progressive bout disorganization may be attributed to the gradual dearousal from stress. Differences between consecutive bouts in their micro-characteristics suggest that at least some grooming actions emitted within the context of those bouts operate as relatively independent units of behaviour. Those unitary component actions appear to be integrated into protracted pelage cleaning sequences by a separate mechanism. Similar endogenous mechanisms have been proposed for other co-ordinated motor actions, which suggests that the organizational principles identified in the context of novelty-induced grooming may represent general principles that govern co-ordinated behaviour. 相似文献

Variations of associations between different behavioural patterns were analysed during post-embryonic development in the water
stick insect,Ranatra linearis L. (Heteroptera: Nepidae). Behavioural patterns recorded were: quiescence, swimming, crawling, leg waving, body swaying,
respiratory ascents breathing, respiratory descents, grooming and feeding activities (predatory attempts, foreleg movements,
ingestion). A factorial analysis of correspondance stressed the contrast between the organization of larval behaviour and
that of adult behaviour. No behavioural patterns were dropped from the repertoire during post-embryonic development ofRanatra linearis and no new patterns developed in adults outside the reproductive period. Larval behaviour was characterized by more frequent
respiratory activities and grooming and adult behaviour was characterized by more frequent locomotory activities. At all larval
stages grooming was associated with respiratory activities and crawling, but not with feeding activities. 相似文献

The relationship between the particle size of an inert silica dust, its up-take from different surfaces and the grooming behaviour
of males, gravid females, and fifth and sixth instar nymphs of the German cockroachBlattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) (L.) was investigated. The normal grooming behaviour of gravid females, nymphs and males differed
according to sex and age. The gravid females and nymphs exhibited greater grooming activity than the males, especially of
the antennae and the legs. Gravid females, nymphs, and adult males exhibited increased grooming activity after exposure to
dust in the size range 0.5–63 μm, but there was no significant difference in grooming behaviour from the control when cockroaches
were exposed to dust sizes greater than 70 μm. Antennal grooming by males was greater than leg grooming when exposed to all
dust sizes, except size particles ranging 4.5–7.5 μm. A dust pick-up experiment indicated that the average amount of dust
transferred toB. germanica is affected by particle size, the porosity of the treated surface, and the sex and age of the cockroaches. Gravid females
picked up greater amounts of dust than fifth and sixth instar nymphs, which in turn picked up more dust than males. Silica
dust particles (0.5–7.5 μm) were picked up more effectively than larger particle sizes, by all three categories, males, females
and fifth and sixth instar nymphs of cockroach on all three test surfaces plastic, ceramic and unpainted plywood. Plywood
was the least effective surface for transfer of dust, of all sizes, to males, females and nymphs. 相似文献

Prediction of the frequencies of restriction endonuclease recognition sequences using di- and mononucleotide frequencies 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

The calculation of probabilities of nucleotide sequences from the frequencies of dinucleotides is described. The dinucleotide and mononucleotide frequencies used can be obtained from nearest neighbor analysis or from databank sequences. If dinucleotide and mononucleotide frequencies from nearest neighbor analysis are used, probabilities for oligonucleotides can be calculated for genomes in which there is little or no sequence data. Within a given genome, a broad range of probabilities for hexanucleotide palindromes with the same base composition is predicted and shown (14). 相似文献

Grooming behaviour is the most common innate behaviour in animals. In rodents, it consists of sequences of movements organized in four phases, executed symmetrically on both sides of the animal and creating a syntactic chain of behavioural events. The grooming syntax can be altered by stress and novelty, as well as by several mutations and brain lesions. Grooming behaviour is known to be affected by alterations of the dopamine system, including dopamine receptor modulation, dopamine alteration in genetically modified animals, and after brain lesion. While a lot is known about the initiation and syntactic modifications of this refined sequence of movements, effects of unilateral lesion of dopamine neurons are unclear particularly regarding the symmetry of syntactic chains. In the present work we studied grooming in mice unilaterally lesioned in the medial forebrain bundle by 6-hydroxydopamine. We found a reduction in completion of grooming bouts, associated with reduction in number of transitions between grooming phases. The data also revealed the development of asymmetry in grooming behaviour, with reduced tendency to groom the contralateral side to the lesion. Symmetry was recovered following treatment with L-DOPA. Thus, the present work shows that unilateral lesion of dopamine neurons reduces self-grooming behaviour by affecting duration and numbers of events. It produces premature discontinuation of grooming chains but the sequence syntax remains correct. This deficient grooming could be considered as an intrinsic symptom of Parkinson’s disease in animal models and could present some similarities with abnormalities of motor movement sequencing seen in patients. Our study also suggests grooming analysis as an additional method to screen parkinsonism in animal models. 相似文献

The influence of behavioral context and social characteristics on the physical aspects of social grooming in rhesus monkeys 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The extent to which dominance status and sex can influence the physical act of grooming was examined in two groups of rhesus
monkeys. Both the sex and the dominance status of the groomee, but not of the groomer, were found to affect the body sites
groomed and the positions assumed by the animals during the grooming bout. Females were groomed more on the back and head
and less on the tail, rump, upper leg, and lower arm than males. Females with infants tended to face away from the groomer.
Higher-ranking groomees were groomed more on the tail and rump and less on the upper leg and back than lower-ranking groomees.
Higher-ranking groomees spent more time lying down during grooming than lower-ranking groomees, while lower-ranking groomees
faced away from the groomer more then higher-ranking groomees. The behavioral interactions just prior to and immediately after
grooming were also recorded. Although the onset of grooming was preceded by social interactions between the partners, the
end of grooming was followed by a complete break in interactions. Particular types of social signals displayed by the groomee
just prior to grooming were highly correlated with the grooming of specific body sites. These results suggest that the groomee
controls the behavior of the groomer by the social signals it displays and the positions it maintains during the grooming
bout. Thus, the grooming act itself may play an important role in the social relationships between group members. 相似文献

Rats frequently emit grooming actions in a highly stereotyped, syntactic chain in which three distinct phases of facially directed forearm movements are sequentially emitted in a rule-governed pattern and followed by body-directed licking. The present study evaluated the effects of the full dopamine D1 agonist, SKF 81297, and the partial dopamine D1 agonist, SKF 38393, on the duration of individual phases of stereotyped grooming chains. We found that systemic administration of SKF 81297 significantly shortened grooming chain duration. An examination of the fine temporal structure of syntactic grooming chain actions showed that duration changes were correlated with decreased numbers of actions in phases I and IV of the chain. Phases II and III were not changed in duration, although there were some structural distortions introduced. The partial D1 agonist, SKF 38393, had no effect on duration or number of component actions in the grooming chain. Based on these results, we hypothesize that the timing of syntactic grooming phase transitions may involve a D1-mediated internal clock process that is altered by full D1 agonist activation. By this model, SKF 81297 increases the speed of the clock used for the temporal control of grooming actions, and thus shortens phase durations. 相似文献

Natural rodent grooming and other instinctive behavior serves as a natural model of complex movement sequences. Rodent grooming has syntactic (rule-driven) sequences and more random movement patterns. Both incorporate the same movements--only the serial structure differs. Recordings of neural activity in the dorsolateral striatum and the substantia nigra pars reticulata indicate preferential activation during syntactic sequences over more random sequences. Neurons that are responsive during syntactic grooming sequences are often unresponsive or have reverse activation profiles during kinematically similar movements that occur in flexible or random grooming sequences. Few neurons could be categorized as strictly movement related--instead they were activated only in the context of particular sequential patterns of movements. Particular sequential patterns included "syntactic chain" grooming sequences of paw, head, and body movements and also "warm-up" sequences, which consist of head and body/limb movements that precede locomotion after a period of quiet resting (Golani 1992). Activation during warm-up was less intense and less frequent than during grooming sequences, but both sequences activated neurons above baseline levels, and the same neurons sometimes responded to both sequences. The fact that striatal neurons code 2 natural sequences which are made up of different constituent movements suggests that the basal ganglia may have a generalized role in sequence control. The basal ganglia are modulated by the context of the sequence and may play an executive function in the complex natural patterns of sequenced behaviour. 相似文献

In previous research, male chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) were found to be more ‘conciliatory’ than females, in that after aggressive incidents males more often engaged in socially positive contact with former opponents. The first part of the present paper presents similar results for a large breeding troop of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). To investigate further the possible sex difference in postconflict behaviour, a series of experiments was carried out on small isosexual groups of young rhesus monkeys, three male and three female groups. Food competition was created by providing either a single apple piece (Monopoly test) or a handful of small pieces (Equality test). Observations lasted for 30 min, and behaviour in tests without food provisioning was also recorded. The predicted response to food was an increase in aggression followed by restorative behaviour, such as grooming. In Equality tests both sexes showed similar responses, i.e. increased aggression and decreased grooming and cohesiveness. In Monopoly tests, however, their responses differed. After the aggression increase, which occurred in all groups, males showed a significant increase in grooming and cohesiveness, whereas females showed the (non-significant) opposite trend. Another sex difference was that changes in grooming and aggression frequencies were related to the rank order in female groups, but not in male groups. Since there was no evidence for a direct causal connection between grooming and aggression, a new model is introduced which links grooming behaviour to the type of food provision rather than to the social disturbance by aggression. According to this model inequality in food distribution causes social tensions. Males actively try to reduce these tensions, whereas females do not. Some alternative explanations are also discussed. 相似文献

Among adult females and males of African antelope impala are unique in their performance of reciprocal allogrooming. The occurrence of this behaviour in neonatal impala fawns was explored in a free-ranging impala herd at the San Diego Wild Animal Park where 5 dam-reared fawns were observed from birth through 10 weeks of age. One-way maternal grooming and reciprocal allogrooming with the dam and non dam partners emerged as distinct behavioural systems. Maternal grooming, directed mostly to the anogenital area, was typical of that seen in other ungulates, and sharply declined over the first two weeks. Reciprocal allogrooming, characterized by alternate exchanges of grooming bouts with a partner in the same manner as in adults, was seen as early as 3–8 d after birth. All fawns were grooming with unrelated adult females by the end of the second week. By week 2 virtually every measure of reciprocal allogrooming by fawns (grooming delivered per hour, reciprocity, and percent of encounters initiated) was as high as for adults. The appearance of this reciprocal allogrooming pattern, especially at such an early age, appears to be unique among ungulates, and possibly mammals in general. Three hand-reared impala fawns, deprived of the opportunity to interact with older herdmates, but having access to impala fawns and heterospecific fawns, were observed from 1–3 mo of age. The hand-reared impala showed no alteration in the occurrence of reciprocal allogrooming behaviour compared with the dam-reared control fawns, indicating that allogrooming experience with older animals was not required for the appearance of reciprocal allogrooming at an early age. Interestingly, hand-reared fawns persisted in grooming heterospecific fawns despite the fact that heterospecifics rarely reciprocated grooming. We postulate that the strong predisposition for impala young to groom others may be related to the threat of tick infestation in the impala's ecotone habitat. 相似文献

Handclasp grooming is a unique social custom, known to occur regularly among some, but not all populations of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). As with other cultural behaviors, it is assumed that this distinctive grooming posture is learned socially by one individual from another. However, statistical comparisons among factors thought to influence how a behavior spreads within a group have never, to our knowledge, been conducted. In the present study, the origination and spread of handclasp grooming in a group of captive chimpanzees was followed throughout more than 1,500 h of observation over a period of 12 years. We report on the frequency, bout duration, and number and demography of performers throughout the study period, and compare these findings to those reported for wild populations. We predicted that dyads with strong affiliative ties, measured by time spent in proximity to and grooming one another, were likely to develop a handclasp grooming partnership during the study period. A quadratic assignment procedure was used to compare correlations among observed frequencies of grooming and proximity with handclasp grooming in all possible dyads within the group. As predicted, the formation of new handclasp grooming dyads was positively correlated with the rate of overall grooming and proximity within a dyad. In addition, in nearly all dyads formed, at least one individual had been previously observed to handclasp groom. We concluded that affiliation and individual experience determines the transmission of handclasp grooming among captive chimpanzees. 相似文献

Drosophila groom away debris and pathogens from the body using their legs in a stereotyped sequence of innate motor behaviors. Here, we investigated one aspect of the grooming repertoire by characterizing the D1 family dopamine receptor, DopR. Removal of DopR results in decreased hind leg grooming, as substantiated by quantitation of dye remaining on mutant and RNAi animals vs. controls and direct scoring of behavioral events. These data are also supported by pharmacological results that D1 receptor agonists fail to potentiate grooming behaviors in headless DopR flies. DopR protein is broadly expressed in the neuropil of the thoracic ganglion and overlaps with TH‐positive dopaminergic neurons. Broad neuronal expression of dopamine receptor in mutant animals restored normal grooming behaviors. These data provide evidence for the role of DopR in potentiating hind leg grooming behaviors in the thoracic ganglion of adult Drosophila. This is a remarkable juxtaposition to the considerable role of D1 family dopamine receptors in rodent grooming, and future investigations of evolutionary relationships of circuitry may be warranted. 相似文献

The behaviour of insects between making contact with a potential oviposition site and the act of oviposition itself determines the conditions in which their progeny begin development and, in many cases, whether a crop or commodity is damaged. In this paper the behaviour of female cowpea seed beetles, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), during this period has been examined. The duration of discrete behaviour patterns within this period and the transitional frequencies between them have been used to compare the behaviour of beetles on two different hosts. In a 30-min period, beetles laid more eggs on mung than adzuki beans and rejected mung as an oviposition site much less frequently. A log-linear contingency table analysis of the transitional frequencies indicated a highly significant interaction between successive behaviours and between the second of the two behaviours and the host seed, indicating that the sequence of behaviours is partially determined by the host seed. Grooming, departure from the seed and loops in behavioural sequences occur more often on adzuki than mung and are indicative of a less acceptable host. Discriminant analysis showed that the total time spent exhibiting different behaviour patterns was significantly different on the two hosts. Mann–Whitney tests revealed small but significant differences in the mean durations of only three behaviour patterns on the two seed types. Measurement of the duration of each behavioural pattern confirms what can be deduced about host acceptability by observing the simple occurrence of different behavioural patterns and the determination of the frequency of transitions between them. Differences in acceptability were predominantly reflected in the frequency of certain behaviour patterns and of particular transitions from one pattern to another, not in the mean duration of each exhibition of a defined behaviour pattern. It is argued that the utility of measuring the duration of behavioural elements could only be demonstrated because behavioural patterns or categories were precisely defined. 相似文献

Grooming behavior in laboratory brown rats was analysed in the course of extrapolation task solving. Cases of task solution (correct and incorrect) were compared with those when animal "refused" to turn round the screen during search of food bait. In latter cases grooming episodes were more numerous, their latency and duration being higher than during former cases. At the same time the latest stages of experiment (when 8-13 trials a day twice a week were presented) were characterized by more frequent grooming occurrence as well as by longer latencies and duration of grooming episodes. When rats were given I trial a day with one week intervals grooming incidence as well as "refusals" occurrence decreased. The possible participation of animal grooming in arranging the defense reactions against excessive and inadequate activity is discussed. 相似文献

Long-term grooming tests were conducted on two large-scale test panels, one coated with a fluorosilicone fouling-release (FR) coating, and one coated with a copper based ablative antifouling (AF) coating. Mechanical grooming was performed weekly or bi-weekly using a hand operated, electrically powered, rotating brush tool. The results indicate that weekly grooming was effective at removing loose or heavy biofilm settlement from both coatings, but could not prevent the permanent establishment of low-profile tenacious biofilms. Weekly grooming was very effective at preventing macrofouling establishment on the AF coating. The effectiveness of weekly grooming at preventing macrofouling establishment on the FR coating varied seasonally. The results suggest that frequent mechanical grooming is a viable method to reduce the fouling rating of ships’ hulls with minimal impact to the coating. Frequent grooming could offer significant fuel savings while reducing hull cleaning frequencies and dry dock maintenance requirements. 相似文献

I analyzed the temporal organization of individual Japanese macaques’ (Macaca fuscata) grooming sequences in 14 mothers and 13 offspring of different age/sex classes and 4 nonkin females. I hypothesized that
preceding grooming affects subsequent grooming by the same individual. Grooming bouts were likely to be terminated as the
bouts became longer when females groomed nonrelatives. Moreover, the duration of first bouts was longer than that of following
bouts. These effects were also seen in grooming of mothers by their offspring > 1 year old and that of adult and adolescent
female offspring by their mothers. In contrast, neither the duration of first bouts nor the number of preceding bouts had
much effect on the occurrence or duration of subsequent bouts in any subject. 相似文献

The function of standing on one leg in birds has long been attributed to reducing heat loss from the unfeathered legs to the external environment. Whilst a handful of single‐species studies correlate the use of the behaviour with ambient temperature, the degree to which it is used across taxa is unknown. Given that leg‐length varies between species, the length of the leg (relative to body size) may mediate the use of this thermoregulatory behaviour, such that birds with longer legs should roost on one leg more than those with relatively shorter legs at any given ambient temperature. We tested this prediction through field observations and comparative analyses of nine shorebird species, with varying tarsi length relative to body size. Six of the nine species examined used unipedal standing more as temperatures decrease, indicating its role as a heat conservation behaviour. We also found that species with relatively longer legs roosted on one leg more frequently across a wide range of temperatures. Species with shorter leg lengths likely rely less on this posture to insulate the relatively smaller surface area of the legs. Our findings showed that the long accepted notion that birds stand on one leg more at colder temperatures holds, and that species with smaller relative leg length were less reliant on this behaviour to minimise heat loss from these bare appendages. 相似文献

The first aim of this study was to investigate whether specific changes in the frequencies of behavioural characteristics
are correlated with the cause or reflect the onset of the laying of haploid eggs by the queen, and whether these changes cause
the onset of egg laying and aggressive behaviour by workers. The second aim was to obtain a better understanding of the occurrence
of the behaviours in relation to the physiology and function of the queen and the workers.
No behavioural characteristics of workers which could predict the occurrence of the queen's switch to haploid egg laying was
found nor did any such behaviour indicate that the switch had already occurred. The onset of worker oviposition was not found
to be the consequence of the level or the type of agonistic actions between the workers and the queen.
With the onset of worker oviposition the agonistic behaviours called trembling and buzzing, which are directed at the queen,
disappear. At the same time the frequency of a non-directed behaviour, called humming, increases. This behaviour is seen particularly
in the small housebees with developed ovaries.
Before worker oviposition begins, the frequencies with which individual workers perform agonistic behaviour are not correlated
with the conditions of their ovaries nor correlated with other characteristics of the workers. However, these frequencies
are related to the sequence in which workers emerge. The correlations with age are due to the fact that workers of the first
brood have higher activity levels than those of the later broods. The first egg layers are to be found among the first workers.
In the period of worker oviposition, humming and the aggressive behaviours of darting and attack are performed by workers
with developed ovaries. These behaviours are directed particularly towards workers who also have active ovaries.
If the queen has disappeared 1 worker usually becomes dominant. This worker is characterized by the relatively high frequency
with which she engages in darting and attacks. In addition, this worker is characterized by a specific behaviour, called pumping,
which is directed at workers that have mature eggs in their ovaries. Behavioural domination, however, is no guarantee that
the bee concerned will eventually become the most productive one.
Although at an apparently pre-determined moment in the ontogeny of the colony the queen loses control over worker oviposition
and related behaviours, she remains dominant in various other behavioural hierarchies. It is therefore concluded that the
queen never loses dominance completely. 相似文献
