Ecosystems are linked by the movement of organisms across habitat boundaries and the arrangement of habitat patches can affect species abundance and composition. In tropical seascapes many coral reef fishes settle in adjacent habitats and undergo ontogenetic habitat shifts to coral reefs as they grow. Few studies have attempted to measure at what distances from nursery habitats these fish migrations (connectivity) cease to exist and how the abundance, biomass and proportion of nursery species change on coral reefs along distance gradients away from nursery areas. The present study examines seascape spatial arrangement, including distances between habitats, and its consequences on connectivity within a tropical seascape in Mozambique using a seascape ecology approach. Fish and habitat surveys were undertaken in 2016/2017 and a thematic habitat map was created in ArcGIS, where cover and distances between habitat patches were calculated. Distance to mangroves and seagrasses were significant predictors for abundance and biomass of most nursery species. The proportions of nursery species were highest in the south of the archipelago, where mangroves were present and decreased with distance to nurseries (mangroves and seagrasses). Some nursery species were absent on reef sites farthest from nursery habitats, at 80 km from mangroves and at 12 km from seagrass habitats. The proportion of nursery/non-nursery snapper and parrotfish species, as well as abundance and biomass of seagrass nursery species abruptly declined at 8 km from seagrass habitats, indicating a threshold distance at which migrations may cease. Additionally, reefs isolated by large stretches of sand and deep water had very low abundances of several nursery species despite being within moderate distances from nursery habitats. This highlights the importance of considering the matrix (sand and deep water) as barriers for fish migration.  相似文献

Shallow estuarine habitats, including vegetated marsh edge (VME), oyster reefs (oyster), and nonvegetated soft bottom (NVB), provide important functions for estuarine resident and estuarine-dependent species. A paucity of information exists concerning relative nursery value of these habitats for juvenile fishes and invertebrates. In Grand Bay, MS and Weeks Bay, AL, National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERR), this study evaluated the potential of the three habitats to serve as nurseries by quantifying habitat-specific density, size, growth, and survival of juvenile white shrimp Litopenaeus setiferus. Drop sampling in Oct 2003 and Jul 2004 indicated that white shrimp density was significantly greater in oyster and VME when compared with adjacent NVB. No significant difference occurred in density between oyster and VME. Significantly larger shrimp were collected in NVB, intermediate-sized shrimp were collected in oyster, and smaller shrimp were collected in VME. Using field enclosures to study growth of juvenile white shrimp we found significantly higher growth in oyster when compared with NVB and VME. Predator mesocosm experiments indicated that when blue crabs were used as predators, white shrimp juveniles experienced significantly higher survival rates in VME and NVB when compared with oyster. Our study suggests that juvenile white shrimp may select for oyster over NVB because of higher food availability and not necessarily for refuge needs from predation by blue crabs. In addition, juvenile habitat needs may shift with individual growth, indicating that the relative nursery value of a habitat is not inclusive for all juvenile sizes. Similar to VME, oyster provides an important function in the juvenile stages of white shrimp and should be examined further as a potential nursery habitat.  相似文献

  1. Organisms that undergo a shift in ontogeny and habitat type often change their spatial distribution throughout their life cycle, but how this affects population dynamics remains poorly understood.
  2. We examined spatial and temporal patterns in Aedes nigripes abundance, a widespread univoltine Arctic mosquito species (Diptera: Culicidae), hypothesizing that the spatial distribution of adults would be closely tied to aquatic habitat.
  3. We tracked adult densities of A. nigripes near Kangerlussuaq, Greenland using emergence traps, CO2-baited traps, and sweep-nets.
  4. In back-to-back years of sampling (2017 and 2018) we found two-fold variation in overall abundance.
  5. Adults were spatially patchy when first emerging from aquatic habitats but within a week, mean capture rates for host-seeking adult females were similar across locations, even in places far from larval habitat.
  6. Daily variation in mosquito captures was primarily explained by weather, with virtually no mosquito activity when temperatures averaged less than 8°C or wind speeds exceeded 6 m/s. Gravid females (3% of resting adults) were spatially patchy on the landscape, but not always in the same places where most adults emerged.
  7. The spatial distribution of adults is quickly uncoupled from the spatial distribution of larvae because A. nigripes females may disperse far from their natal habitats in search of a blood-meal and high-quality oviposition habitat.
8. This research highlights the value of studying ecological processes that act at disparate life stages for understanding the population biology of organisms with complex life cycles.  相似文献

Juvenile trumpeters Pelates sexlineatus , two main prey items (amphipods and polychaetes) and seagrass constituents (detritus, young and old leaves of Zostera capricorni ) were collected from two sites within six estuaries, to compare the spatial variability of elemental composition (Li, Mn, Sr, Cd, Ba and Pb). Average elemental values were lower in the fish otoliths except for Sr. Significant differences in elemental composition of otoliths were detected among estuaries (Mn and Pb). Spatial differences in concentrations of Cd were found in amphipods and polychaetes; the latter also showed differences for Ba and Pb. Detritus and Z. capricorni leaves showed appreciable spatial differences for most of the elements. Spatial variability between sites was generally high. There were differences in the multivariate composition of trace elements found in the otoliths of fish among estuaries. One estuary was consistently separated from the other estuaries in the ordinations. Significant correlations were detected between concentrations of Mn in otoliths and concentrations in prey, Z. capricorni and detritus. A significant relationship was also detected between Pb in otoliths and detritus. There were significant correlations between concentrations of Mn, Sr and Ba in detritus and that in otoliths. The study demonstrated that trophic transfer and habitat constituents may be considered as a potential source for some of the elemental accumulation in fish otoliths.  相似文献

Using French Grunts (Haemulon flavolineatum) held captive within mangrove and reef sites, we determined (a) whether otolith microchemical differences existed between mangroves and reefs separated at a biologically relevant spatial scale (0.25-7.1 km), (b) whether patterns in elemental concentrations were consistent across years, and (c) whether it was possible to identify whether a given fish occupied a mangrove as a juvenile.Three sites were established at Great Exuma, Bahamas (two reefs and one mangrove, May 2001) and at Turneffe Atoll, Belize (one reef and two mangroves, August 2001 and 2002). Using concentrations of Sr and Ba, discriminant function analysis (DFA) indicated unique spatial microchemical signatures of fish from each of the three Bahamas sites allowing an average correct classification of 77%. Using concentrations of Sr, Ba, Sn and Pb (2001), and in addition Li, Mg, Cu and Rb (2002), DFA of the three Belize sites indicated an average correct classification of 68% and 85% in 2001 and 2002, respectively. To assess temporal variability in otolith microchemistry, we compared microchemical signatures of Belize fish from 2001 to those from 2002. On average, 42% of fish from 2002 were correctly classified to their captive sites using chemical information from 2001, thus suggesting considerable temporal variability in otolith microchemistry. Finally, to identify whether a given fish occupied a mangrove during its juvenile stage, we ablated the juvenile portion of the otolith taken from reefs in Belize 2002. Results of this analysis indicated that 36% of 39 individuals taken from the reef had a signature more representative of one of the mangrove sites. Although otolith microchemistry varied temporally and our analysis was restricted to the grouping of individuals to only one of three sites, mangroves appeared to contribute to reef populations.  相似文献

Fisheries are known to selectively remove larger and older individuals from wild populations. In sequential hermaphrodites, size-selectivity also becomes ‘sex-selectivity’, as the largest and oldest individuals of a sex-changing population primarily belong to one sex. Plasticity in size-at-sex-change is believed to circumvent the undesirable effects of gamete limitation and low effective population size. Here we present data of two commercially exploited sea bream species in different biogeographic regions, one protandrous (male-first) and one protogynous (female-first), respectively exhibiting spatial and temporal fluctuation in size-at-sex-change. By contrasting the patterns found against recent evidence of similar phenomena in other species, we discuss life-history strategies that favour reproductive success in different environmental scenarios. Size-at-sex-change may be for sequential hermaphrodites as important a life-history parameter as size-at-maturity or age-at-size. Consequently, the demographic consequences of altered size-at-sex-change should be considered explicitly in stock management and assessment.  相似文献

Morphology and morphometry of the sagittae otolith were studied in pelagic and mesopelagic fish. The shape, margins and rostrum of four groups of otoliths from several species were analyzed: group 1 (pelagic fish associated with the under ice cover N = 42), group 2 (pelagic fish associated with water offshore N = 9), group 3 (mesopelagic fish associated with extensive vertical migration N = 57) and group 4 (mesopelagic fish associated with short vertical migration N = 54). E (maximum width of the sagitta /maximum length of the sagitta %), R (rostrum length (RL)/maximum length of the sagitta %) and S (sulcus area (SS)/otolith area (OS) %) indexes were calculated for each species. Sagittae of pelagic groups (1 and 2) showed the smallest sagitta dimensions in relation to the total length of the fish, in this group the sagitta shape is variable. Sagittae of mesopelagic fish (groups 3 and 4) showed variable shape and edges. The shape in group 4 was polygonal and these species have more width than length. Statistical analysis showed significant differences in the E, R and S indexes. These results were compared with other 19 species, belonging to six families, taken from a publisher-edited literature. E, R and S-values could be used to characterize the sagittae of the Antarctic fish and could be considered as a useful tool for fish ecology studies.  相似文献

The spring and summer distribution of adults and larval fish stages of Sparids and Scorpaenids was studied in two sites in the western Mediterranean. Fish adults and larvae of those two taxa were identified and sorted according to their life stages in order to study their distribution and develop suitable habitat maps. Study areas were located on French coastal waters, the “Côte Bleue” Marine Park (CBMP) has an east-west orientation with substratum dominated by Posidonia beds and the Marine Reserve of Cerbère-Banyuls (MRCB) runs north–south and is dominated by rocky substrates. Generalised Additive Models (GAM) combined with Geographic Information System (GIS), were used to model the suitable habitats for fish larvae and adults. During spring months, waters exhibit low Sea Surface Temperatures (SST), low Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR), high values of Sea Surface Chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a), and mostly negative values of Sea Level Anomaly (SLA) indicating anticyclonic eddies. During summer months, waters have higher values of SST, lower values of Chl-a and positive values of SLA indicating cyclonic eddies. The results revealed different environmental responses in the distribution of fish adults and larvae in the CBMP and MRCB. Suitable habitats for adult were mainly dependent on the substrate types (Posidonia meadows and sand) and they were found close to the coast, whereas fish larvae were dependent on environmental cues (Chl-a, SLA, SST) with a sparse spatial distribution.  相似文献

The patterns of distribution and abundance of a fish community were influenced by the magnitude of the canopy of Sargassum furcatum . It is suggested that the fish community in the sublittoral of Farol Beach is structured mainly by factors related to the availability of space and habitats. Quantitative data were collected by visual census techniques, along a belt of 30X2 m in each habitat. Fish diversity was greater in S. furcatum bed and in the rocks, than in the sand where there is less structural complexity. The fish density was related to the macroalgal biomass. Correspondence analysis and cluster analysis were used to describe and compare fish assemblages in three different habitats. The association observed between the juveniles of the sparid Diplodus argenteus , the grunt Haemulon aurolineatum and the surgeonfish Acanthurus bahianus and the different habitats in the summer, and juveniles of the other species in the autumn, indicates a pattern of recruitment of the species in these periods.  相似文献

Experimental fishing with long-lines and gillnets was conducted on the continental shelf off southwestern Norway between 150 and 350 m depth. Abundance and distribution of redfish (Sebastes marinus L., 1758), ling (Molva molva L., 1758), and tusk (Brosme brosme Ascanius, 1772) were quantified in Lophelia pertusa (L., 1758) coral reefs and in non-coral habitats. The largest catches of redfish were made with long-line fleets set in coral reef habitats. Ling and tusk were also most numerous in coral habitats, although not statistically significant. Fish caught in coral habitats tended to be larger in size than in non-coral habitats. The diet of redfish, tusk and ling included the same prey groups in all habitats, but they differed at the species level. Lophelia-reefs may provide a profitable feeding place for tusk. For the planktivorous Sebastes, on the other hand, their affinity to the reefs seems primarily to be related to the physical structure offered by the reefs.

This study examined the spatial and temporal variation in fish assemblage composition within two intermittent streams in north‐western Zimbabwe. Eight sites were sampled during three different periods of flow. Twenty‐five species in eight families, dominated by cichlids and cyprinids, were collected. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to explore the relationship between species and their environmental correlates. According to variation partition, 68.1% of assemblage variation was explained by both habitat and temporal variables. Most species were associated with large pools, whereas small species were associated with habitats that had gravel and boulders. The temporal aspect suggested a pattern associated with high catch per unit effort (CPUE) for the mormyrids, Clarias gariepinus and Labeo altivelis, during the early rain period. By comparison, the late rain period was associated with high CPUE for Labeo cylindricus, Labeobarbus marequensis, Chiloglanis neumanni and Oreochromis mortimeri, whereas the rest of the species had high CPUE during both the late rain and dry periods. The assemblage composition was more diverse during the late rain period. Refuge availability during the dry period appeared to be essential for the assemblage of the intermittent streams. Protection of these temporal habitats is therefore important in conserving fish assemblages within intermittent streams of the Lake Kariba area.  相似文献

In many species, the natural distribution of material resources important for reproduction can profoundly impact reproductive success among individuals and, hence, the opportunity and intensity of sexual selection. Here, we report on a field‐based experiment investigating the effects of nest aggregation on sexual selection in a fish, the sand goby Pomatoschistus minutus. We found that the distribution of potential nests (sparse versus aggregated nest treatments) affected patterns of nest colonization and reproductive success. Specifically, in the treatment with aggregated nesting resources, a greater proportion of nests remained unoccupied by sand goby males. Although the size of nesting males did not differ between treatments, eggs accumulated more rapidly when nests were sparsely distributed. We found that the opportunity for selection decreased over time with the accumulation of eggs in the nests in both the aggregated and sparse treatments. Moreover, the effect of male size on reproductive success was influenced by an interaction between nest distribution and time, with the selection gradient being highest right after nest colonization when nests were aggregated, while the opposite pattern was observed in the sparse nest treatment. Such findings highlight the vital role that environmental and social factors can play in determining the importance of male phenotypic traits (in this case, male size). More broadly, our results also underscore how the natural distribution of resources, both in space and time, can impact the strength of sexual selection acting on wild animal populations.  相似文献

The effects of selected physical and biological factors on the early development of a subtidal invertebrate assemblage were examined at an offshore oil platform in the Santa Barbara Channel (California, USA). The effects of date, year, length, and depth of submersion were investigated by replacing sets of ceramic tiles with new tiles at frequencies of 2, 4, 6, 12, and 24 months at three depths (6, 12, and 18 m) over a period of 24 months. The effects of existing colonists and depth were explored in a second experiment by removing selected early colonists from ceramic tiles deployed at the same three depths over a period of 12 months. More than 40 invertebrate taxa from seven phyla colonized the tiles. Colonial tunicates and encrusting bryozoans appeared early in the successional sequence (∼2 months), in cover ranging from <5% to 80% and from <5% to 55%, respectively. Tubiculous amphipods, barnacles, and sponges could also appear early, but in low cover (<20%). Composition of the assemblage changed over time with barnacles, sponges, and mussels becoming the principal space holders on tiles submerged for 24 months. When potential competitors were removed monthly, variation in the cover of dominant taxa (i.e., bryozoans, amphipods, barnacles) was maintained to 12 months, suggesting that other factors, such as larval availability or post-settlement mortality, were responsible for these patterns. Development of this assemblage appeared to fit a pattern of early succession that was largely predictable in terms of the composition and sequence of occurrence of dominant taxa, but variable in rate of development, depending on date of submersion, year, and depth.  相似文献

In tropical and subtropical estuaries, gradients of primary productivity and salinity are generally invoked to explain patterns in community structure and standing crops of fishes. We documented spatial and temporal patterns in fish community structure and standing crops along salinity and nutrient gradients in two subtropical drainages of Everglades National Park, USA. The Shark River drains into the Gulf of Mexico and experiences diurnal tides carrying relatively nutrient enriched waters, while Taylor River is more hydrologically isolated by the oligohaline Florida Bay and experiences no discernable lunar tides. We hypothesized that the more nutrient enriched system would support higher standing crops of fishes in its mangrove zone. We collected 50 species of fish from January 2000 to April 2004 at six sampling sites spanning fresh to brackish salinities in both the Shark and Taylor River drainages. Contrary to expectations, we observed lower standing crops and density of fishes in the more nutrient rich tidal mangrove forest of the Shark River than in the less nutrient rich mangrove habitats bordering the Taylor River. Tidal mangrove habitats in the Shark River were dominated by salt-tolerant fish and displayed lower species richness than mangrove communities in the Taylor River, which included more freshwater taxa and yielded relatively higher richness. These differences were maintained even after controlling for salinity at the time of sampling. Small-scale topographic relief differs between these two systems, possibly created by tidal action in the Shark River. We propose that this difference in topography limits movement of fishes from upstream marshes into the fringing mangrove forest in the Shark River system, but not the Taylor River system. Understanding the influence of habitat structure, including connectivity, on aquatic communities is important to anticipate effects of construction and operational alternatives associated with restoration of the Everglades ecosystem.  相似文献

  1. Accurately accounting for flows of energy through food webs is challenging because of the spatial and temporal variability associated with energy production and consumption. Wet–dry tropical rivers have a highly seasonal discharge regime where wet season flows allow access to energy sources (inundated wetlands) that are not available during the dry season when aquatic consumers are confined to disconnected waterholes.
  2. We combined measures of fish community biomass with previously published feeding guild specific stable isotope analyses to explore how opposing wet- and dry-season habitat templates influence spatial and temporal trends in the sources of energy supporting fish biomass throughout a river network in the wet–dry tropics of northern Australia.
  3. Accounting for the relative contribution of each feeding guild to fish community biomass was a critical component of our analyses, as a single feeding guild (invertivore/piscivore) influenced spatial and temporal patterns in the sources of energy supporting overall fish biomass. During the early dry season, the reliance of fish communities on autochthonous sources of energy (periphyton) decreased from the upper to lower reaches of the river network, which correlates with increasing floodplain area and wet season inundation times. These patterns disappeared by the late dry season as fish in both upper and lower reaches became increasingly reliant on autochthonous sources produced within waterholes over the course of the dry season, indicating that the large wet-season gains in fish biomass are maintained through the dry season by energy produced within waterhole refuges.
  4. Collectively these results indicate that a combination of autochthonous and allochthonous sources of energy work in unison to support fish community biomass throughout the Mitchell River catchment and that access to these sources of energy is dictated by seasonal patterns in discharge interacting with spatial variability in river geomorphology (channel geometry and floodplain area).
  5. Many rivers are experiencing decreased flows due to water resource development and more frequent and severe droughts. Thus, we suggest our study provides insight into how changes in discharge regime could influence food web energetics throughout river networks.

Diets of metamorphosing larvae and early juvenile summer and southern flounder were examined during the settlement period when their distributions overlapped and during a subsequent period when the two flounders were found in different habitats. Prey abundance on tidal flats was examined along an upstream transect. Though initially similar, diets of the two species diverged prior to the development of a segregated distribution. These diet differences reflected those found in the diets of the two species following segregation. Southern flounder ate more active epifaunal prey: mysids, amphipods and calanoid copepods and appeared to be an ambush predator. The summer flounder ate primarily infauna: polychaetes, and invertebrate parts and appeared to be an active forager. Distribution of prey within the study area suggested that mysid gradients may influence movement of southern flounder to nursery grounds. The coupling of biotic and abiotic gradients are probably important in creating nursery areas and guiding fishes to species specific habitat types.  相似文献

During an investigation on actinomycetes from rhizospheric soils from Moroccan habitats, 131 streptomycetes were recovered, morphologically characterized and assessed for their antimicrobial activity. Eleven isolates were characterized by the absence of an aerial mycelium. According to the colour of aerial mycelium, the rest were grouped into seven main classes, namely, grey, yellow, cream, white, green, red and polymorphic colours (pink, orange or violet). The grey colour class dominated (40%) and the red one was found only in rhizospheric soil of the Moroccan endemic plant Argania spinosa. About one third of the isolates (34%) produced soluble pigments of various colours and 14% produced melanoid pigments. Most of the isolates (83%) were active against one or more of the organisms tested (one gram-negative bacterium, three gram-positive bacteria, three yeasts and two filamentous fungi). Most antibiotic-producing isolates possess red and white colour. Strong antibiosis was exhibited against Streptomyces scabies, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis (75, 68 and 60% respectively), while only 14 and 8% of isolates displayed an activity against Escherichia coli and Verticillium dahliae respectively.  相似文献
