Hair today, gone tomorrow: induced chaetal changes in tubificid oligochaetes   总被引:4,自引:4,他引:0
Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the extent of chaetal variation in the tubificids Tubifex tubifex and Ilyodrilus frantzi and the naidids Specaria fraseri and Nais communis under varying environmental conditions. Univariate exposures were carried out using different levels of pH, salinity, water hardness and mercury. We were not able to induce chaetal changes in the two naidids tested. However, we were able to reduce the hairs and pectinations of T. tubifex with exposure to pH, salinity and to hard water such that the bergi form was produced. Prolonged exposure to low or high pH resulted in the total loss of hairs and pectinates such that the blanchardi form was produced. We were able to eliminate the hairs and pectinates of I. frantzi (capillatus) in soft, freshwater exposures such that the bifidus form of I. frantzi was produced. Conversely, in hard or saline water we were able to induce formation of hairs and pectinates on the bifidus form such that the capillatus form was produced. These changes occurred at time intervals ranging from a few days to two months.  相似文献

In field trials Cara, Brio, Maris Piper and Pentland Javelin were consistently more tolerant of damage by Globodera rostochiensis yielding more than Corsair, Pentland Dell, Maris Anchor and Maris Peer, in untreated, heavily infested soil and giving the smallest increases to nematicide treatment. No yield or growth differences were found between plants in untreated and nematicide treated plots at a nematode-free site. The most tolerant cultivars all had a gene (H1) for resistance to G. rostochiensis derived from Solanum tuberosum ssp. andigena and in soil infested with G. pallida the tolerance of at least one resistant cultivar (Maris Piper) appeared to be lessened. However, some resistant cultivars were comparatively intolerant, even to G. rostochiensis. Early cultivars were generally less tolerant than late maturing cultivars but there were exceptions. Amongst cultivars with resistance derived from Solanum vernei the early cultivar Guardian was more tolerant than the main crop cultivar Corsair. The effect on the yield of several cultivars of a range of densities of G. rostochiensis, produced either by applying different rates of a nematicide or by cropping in the previous year, was examined at two sites. The results indicated that the slope of the regression for yield in relation to nematode density was less for tolerant than intolerant cultivars. At sites infested with G. rostochiensis Maris Piper was found to be consistently more tolerant than Pentland Crown.  相似文献

Aims: To compare the abilities of the monocentric rumen fungi Neocallimastix frontalis, Piromyces communis and Caecomyces communis, growing in coculture with Methanobrevibacter smithii, to colonize and degrade lignified secondary cell walls of lucerne (alfalfa) hay. Methods and Results: The cell walls of xylem cylinders isolated from stems of lucerne contained mostly xylans, cellulose and lignin together with a small proportion of pectic polysaccharides. All of these major components were removed during incubation with the three fungi, and differing cell wall polysaccharides were degraded to different extents. The greatest dry weight loss was found with N. frontalis and least with C. communis, and scanning electron microscopy revealed that these extensively colonized different cell types. C. communis specifically colonized secondary xylem fibres and showed much less degradation than N. frontalis and P. communis. Conclusions: Neocallimastix frontalis and P. communis were efficient degraders of the cell walls of lucerne xylem cylinders. Degradation occurred of pectic polysaccharides, xylan and cellulose. Loss of lignin from the xylem cylinders probably resulted from the cleavage of xylan releasing xylan–lignin complexes. Significance and Impact of the Study: Unlike rumen bacteria, the rumen fungi N. frontalis, P. communis and C. communis are able to degrade lignified secondary walls in lucerne stems. These fungi could improve forage utilization by ruminants and may have potential in the degradation of lignocellulosic biomass in the production of biofuels.  相似文献

The effect of increasing level of nickel (Ni) in soil was studied on biomass production, antioxidants, and Ni bioaccumulation and its translocation in castor bean (Ricinus communis) as well as Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) in similar agroclimatic conditions. The plants were exposed to 25, 50, 75, 100, and 150 mg Ni kg?1 soil for up to 60 days. It was found that R. communis produced higher biomass during the same period at all the contamination levels than B. juncea, and reduction in fresh and dry weights due to the metal contamination in soil was significantly lower in R. communis than in B. juncea. Proline and malondialdehyde in the leaves increased with increase in Ni level in both the species, whereas soluble protein content was found decreased. A correlation between the protein and MDA contents in the leaves and Ni contamination levels revealed that higher r2 values for protein and MDA were found in case of B. juncea, which indicates more toxic effects of the metal in this species. R. communis was found to have enhanced proline accumulation (higher correlation value, r2) at different Ni contamination levels. The bioaccumulation of Ni was higher in B. juncea on the basis of the per unit biomass; however, the total metal accumulation per plant was much higher in R. communis than in B. juncea during the same growing periods. The translocation of Ni from roots to shoots was higher in B. juncea at all Ni concentrations. R. communis appeared more tolerant and capable to clean more Ni from the contaminated soil in a given time and also in one crop cycle.  相似文献

There are numerous reports of spiders that have become established outside of their native ranges, but few studies examine their impact on native spiders. We examined the effect of the European hammock spider Linyphia triangularis (Araneae, Linyphiidae) on the native bowl-and-doily spider Frontinella communis (Araneae, Linyphiidae) in Acadia National Park, Maine, USA. First, we added L. triangularis to established plots of F. communis. Significantly more F. communis abandoned their webs when L. triangularis were added compared to control plots. Second, we tested whether F. communis were deterred from building webs in areas where L. triangularis was established. Significantly fewer F. communis built webs on plots with L. triangularis than on control plots. In both experiments, L. triangularis sometimes took over webs of F. communis or incorporated F. communis webs into their own webs, but F. communis never took over or incorporated L. triangularis webs. Competition between L. triangularis and F. communis for both webs and web sites may contribute to the decline of F. communis.  相似文献

Castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) plants were hydroponically cultivated to achieve NO3 deficiency (N starvation), salt stress (addition of 100 mM NaCl), or normal conditions. Endodermal (ECW) and rhizodermal and hypodermal cell walls (RHCW) were isolated enzymatically from roots, and suberin monomers were released by transesterification after solvent extraction. Aromatic and aliphatic suberin monomers were identified and quantified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Between 90 and 95% of the released suberin monomers were linear, long-chain, aliphatic compounds (alcohols, acids, diacids, ω-hydroxy acids and 2-hydroxy acids) with an average chain length of 19 C-atoms. The remainder was an aromatic suberin fraction mainly composed of coumaric and ferulic acid. Suberin amounts were significantly increased in ECW and RHCW in the presence of NaCl. In contrast, N starvation led to significantly reduced levels of suberization in ECW and RHCW. It is concluded that R. communis plants reinforce their apoplastic transport barriers in roots in adaptation to NaCl stress in order to minimize NaCl uptake. Under conditions of N starvation the opposite occurs and plants reduce the suberization of their apoplastic transport barriers to facilitate nutrient uptake form the soil.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in foliage nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) concentrations and δ15N and δ13C ratios were monitored during a year in Erica arborea, Myrtus communis and Juniperus communis co-occurring at a natural CO2 spring (elevated [CO2], about 700 μmol mol−1) and at a nearby control site (ambient [CO2], 360 μmol mol−1) in a Mediterranean environment. Leaf N concentration was lower in elevated [CO2] than in ambient [CO2] for M. communis, higher for J. communis, and dependent on the season for E. arborea. Leaf C concentration was negatively affected by atmospheric CO2 enrichment, regardless of the species. C/N ratio varied concomitantly to N. Leaves in elevated [CO2] showed lower δ13C, and therefore likely lower water use efficiencies than leaves at the control site, regardless of the species, suggesting substantial photosynthetic acclimation under long-term CO2-enriched atmosphere. Leaves of E. arborea showed lower values of δ15N under elevated [CO2], but this was not the case of M. communis and J. communis foliage. The use of the resources and leaf chemical composition are affected by elevated [CO2], but such an effect varies during the year, and is species-dependent. The seasonal dependency and species specificity suggest that plants are able to exploit different available water and N resources within Mediterranean sites. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Nicolson, Dan H. (Cornell U., Ithaca, N. Y.) The occurrence of trichosclereids in the Monsteroideae (Araceae). Amer. Jour. Bot. 47(7): 598–602. Illus. 1960.—A study was made on the presence, distribution, and frequency of trichosclereids within the leaf-blade, petiole, and stem of 32 species of Monsteroideae and I species of Pothoideae. Trichosclereids occurred in all species studied. Distribution and frequencies of trichosclereids were variable. Trichosclereids occurred more consistently in the petiole than in the leaf-blade or stem tissues. A new report of trichosclereids outside of the Monsteroideae, in Pothos repens (Lour.) Druce of the Pothoideae, is made. The tribe Spathiphylleae (Spathiphyllum and Holochlamys) was found to be characterized in part by large numbers of trichosclereids occurring in groups within the leaf-blade.  相似文献

Ferula glauca L. (Apiaceae), formerly believed a subspecies of Ferula communis L., but at the present considered a distinguishable species, was studied for the first time for volatiles from leaves, flowers, fruits and roots. The chemical analysis of the essential oil obtained from different populations growing in Marche (central Italy) was performed by GC-FID and GC–MS. The differences in composition detected between F. glauca and F. communis made the volatile fraction a reliable marker to distinguish between them, and confirmed the botanical data at the base of their discrimination. In particular, the oils obtained from leaves and roots, contained as major compounds (E)-caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, myristicin and elemicin, that can be useful as marker components. Finally, the oils contained some daucane derivatives, that were detected also in F. communis and responsible for important biological properties.  相似文献

A total of 161 Musa genotypes were screened for resistant or tolerant reaction to the natural populations of burrowing nematode, Radopholus similis in a field. Among them, 12 genotypes showed resistant and 37 showed tolerant reaction. To confirm their resistance or tolerant reaction, they were challenge inoculated with R. similis population in pots. The results showed that the YKM-5, Manoranjitham, Anaikomban, Pisang Lilin, Pisang Jaribuaya, Rose, Matti, Hatitat and Veneettu Kunnan were consistently resistant to R. similis in both field and pot conditions whereas Gros Michel, Williams, Red Banana (Mutant), Green Red, Agneeswar, Pisang Mas, Tongat and Then Kunnan were found to be tolerant. The pot study also confirmed that the genotypes Naka Bululu, Nattu Poovan, Motta Poovan, Kullan, Kalibow, Kali Red, Co 1, Chinali, Poovan, Myndoli, Malbhog, Big-e-Banga, Sannachenkadali, Ambalakadali, Namari, Culcutta-4, Ney Poovan, Kunnan, Adukkan, Bile Kadali, Chakkiya, Bagner, Nallabotha, Pacha Bontha Batheesa, Ashy Batheesa, Karpooravalli, Nattu Peyan, M.B.Sawai, FHIA-1, FHIA-3, FHIA-17 and FHIA-23 were susceptible to R. similis though they showed resistant or tolerance reaction under field conditions.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial patterns of polychaete and oligochaete populations inhabiting intertidal sediments of the Quequén Grande estuary (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) were analysed monthly during a yearly period. Local sediments are poorly selected, very fine sands, with a high percentage of mud. Two sites, located at both banks of the estuary were studied: (1) Site N, with a comparatively steep slope and percentage of mud increasing with sediment depth; (2) Site Q, with a gentle slope and percentage of mud increasing towards the sediment surface. The assemblage of annelids was characterised by a very low specific richness, being composed just by 4 species: the polychaetes Laeonereis acuta, Boccardiella ligerica and Capitella sp., and the tubificid oligochaete Ilyodrilus cf. frantzi. Density of the nereid L. acuta reached a peak in late summer and a minimum in spring. The population of Capitella sp. also showed maximum densities in summer, but collapsed during early fall, disappearing completely from the study area. Densities of I. cf. frantzi were highly variable in time and space. Three of the 4 species showed maximum densities at site Q, where mud content was highest at the sediment surface. At this sampling site, most of the L. acuta population occurred within the upper 8 cm of the substrate. On the contrary, at site N, where mud and organic matter content increased with depth, this species was more abundant at subsurface layers (8–16 cm) than at the sediment surface.  相似文献

The freshwater oligochaetes of the subantarctic islands are reviewed and new records are given. Ainudrilus dartnalli sp.n. (subfamily Rhyacodrilinae) is described from freshwater sites on South Georgia (South Atlantic Ocean). It differs from the closely related, southwest Australian, A. nharna Pinder & Brinkhurst, by its longer clitellum, the longer upper teeth of its ventral somatic chaetae, its straighter and fewer penial chaetae, and by the proportions of its spermathecae. Range extensions are given for two widespread naidids, Nais variabilis Piguet and N. communis Piguet, from the Falkland Islands (S. Atlantic). Moreover, new material of N. elinguis Müller is recorded from Macquarie Island (Southern Ocean, SW of New Zealand).  相似文献

The Gigartinaceae are economically important because the carrageenans in this family are used for a variety of purposes including food stabilizers, food substitutes, pharmaceutical applications and cosmetics. The resorcinol method takes advantage of the different carrageenans found in life history phases in this family to identify nonreproductive phases, and consequently, a better understanding of the biology of this economically important family is possible. This study investigates sources of variability that could affect the accuracy of the resorcinol method in identifying phases within the Gigartinaceae. Vegetative disks of Iridaea splendens from different areas of the blade and disks containing reproductive structures all reacted consistently to the resorcinol reagent. The minimum size and testing conditions required to reliably identify phases at the germling stage of I. splendens were determined. Phases of I. splendens cannot be identified if blades are stored in 3% formaldehyde in seawater. Phases of I. splendens, I. lineare, I. heterocarpa, Rhodoglossum californicum and R. affine can be identified reliably at different times of the year. Manipulations of the resorcinol method improved its accuracy in identifying phases of Iridaea cornucopiae and Gigartina exasperata but the high percent of G. exasperata misidentified demonstrates that it cannot be assumed that the current resorcinol method works for all taxa in the Gigartinaceae.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to evaluate root traits associated with nutrient exploitation following defoliation in three coexisting perennial grasses in a semi‐arid savanna. Root length density was determined within soil cores directly beneath plants, nitrogen uptake was evaluated by excised‐root assay with (15NH4)2SO4, and mycorrhizal root colonization was estimated by observation of root segments. Root length density was lowest for Bouteloua curtipendula, intermediate for Eriochloa sericea, and highest for Aristida purpurea indicating that root length density was a more important trait for the mid‐seral than the late‐seral species. Rates of 15N uptake were greatest in the least grazing tolerant late‐seral species, E. sericea, intermediate in the mid‐seral species, A. purpurea, and lowest in the most grazing tolerant late‐seral species, B. curtipendula. Two successive defoliations reduced 15N uptake 60% in the late‐seral species with the greatest uptake rate (E. sericea), but not in species with lowest uptake rates (B. curtipendula). Root length colonization was consistently high (33–61%) in all three species suggesting that these C4 perennial grasses may function as obligate mycotrophs. Contrasting responses among the two late‐seral species indicate that the least grazing tolerant species, E. sericea, appears best adapted for nutrient exploitation while the most grazing tolerant species, B. curtipendula, appears best adapted for efficient nutrient retention. Contrasting responses of nitrogen uptake to short‐term defoliation parallel the population responses of these two coexisting late‐seral species to long‐term herbivory. These data indicate that herbivory may shift interspecific competitive interactions by mediating nutrient exploitation and that a trade‐off may exist between nutrient exploitation and herbivory tolerance in these species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The role of carnivorous mammals as seed dispersers of Myrtus communis L. in the Mediterranean environment was studied. Seeds of M. communis were found in faeces of red fox (Vulpes vulpes L.) and carnivores from the genus Martes, at four sites on the Tyrrhenic coast of Southern Italy in the period autumn-winter 1993–1995. All the study sites are covered by Mediterranean shrublands with M. communis as one of the dominant species. Content analysis of fox scats showed that fruits of M. communis constitute a relevant component of the diet of these carnivores, although other food categories were also well represented. Further investigations on the effect of mammal digestion on seed germinability showed that carnivores not only moved the seeds away from the mother plant but also enhanced their germinability. This species was known to be bird- and ant-dispersed and the adaptive implications of a multi-vectorial seed dispersal process is discussed.  相似文献

Background

Castor bean (Ricinus communis) is an agricultural crop and garden ornamental that is widely cultivated and has been introduced worldwide. Understanding population structure and the distribution of castor bean cultivars has been challenging because of limited genetic variability. We analyzed the population genetics of R. communis in a worldwide collection of plants from germplasm and from naturalized populations in Florida, U.S. To assess genetic diversity we conducted survey sequencing of the genomes of seven diverse cultivars and compared the data to a reference genome assembly of a widespread cultivar (Hale). We determined the population genetic structure of 676 samples using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at 48 loci.  相似文献

Illicium hottense, a new species, is here described from the floristically diverse Massif de la Hotte of southern Haiti. It is compared to related species, especiallyI. ekmanii, with which it has previously been confused.Illicium hottense andI. ekmanii are members ofIllicium subsectionParviflora, a group that comprises four species, all endemic to peninsular Florida (I. parviflorum) or the Greater Antilles: Cuba (I. cubense) and Hispaniola (I. ekmanii, andI. hottense). The subsection is characterized by its distinctive laminar-carnose, ovoid stamens; all have trisyncolpate pollen.Illicium hottense is similar toI. ekmanii andI. parviflorum in having flowers with ten to thirteen carpels and six to less commonly eight stamens, but differs from both in its strongly papillose outer tepals and consistently acute leaves. In addition, its leaves lack the strong anise fragrance ofI. parviflorum. Finally, molecular data provide support for recognizingI. hottense as a species distinct fromI. ekmanii.  相似文献

A lectin preparation obtained fromTetracarpidium conophorum (Nigerian walnut) by affinity chromatography of seed extracts on lactose-agarose has been shown to contain two components by gel filtration on Sephadex G150. The larger componentTetracarpidium conophorum agglutinin I (TCAI) is a disulphide-bonded 70 kDa homodimer whereas the second component TCAII is a 34 kDa monomeric protein. Amino terminal aminoacid sequencing shows identity in TCAI and TCAII for the first fifteen residues after which the sequences diverge. TheN-terminal sequences of TCAI and TCAII show identity with sequences in the B-chains of ricin andRicinus communis agglutinin I (RCAI) in eleven of the initial fifteen residues. Thereafter TCAI appears to be homologous to the ricin B chain whereas TCAII is more homologous with the B chain of RCAI. A limited screening of the carbohydrate-binding specificity of TCAII by affinity chromatography of defined oligosaccharides on TCAII Sepharose columns shows that the binding specificity reported earlier for affinity purifiedTetracarpidium conophorum isolectins (Sato S, Animashaun T, Hughes RC (1991)J Biol Chem 266:11485–94) reflects the binding properties of TCAII which is the major isolectin in unfractionated lectin preparations.  相似文献

This study examines the effects of ricinoleic acid esters from Ricinus communis castor oil on the vitellogenesis of Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks attached to hosts that were fed with commercial rabbit food containing these esters. The oocytes of ticks from the treatment group (TG) showed cytoplasmic changes that inhibited the development of oocytes I and II to the advanced stages (IV and V) in addition to preventing the maturation of oocytes V, resulting in small ones. In addition, sperm was not observed in ampoules. Our findings confirm the acaricide potential of ricinoleic acid esters.  相似文献

Summary Food preference, metal avoidance behaviour and desiccation tolerance were investigated for two collembolan species, Folsomia fimetarioides and Isotomiella minor, in order to test some hypotheses for their different distributions in relation to a heavy metal gradient. F. fimetarioides showed a higher preference for metal tolerant fungi than I. minor when they were offered fungi of different metal tolerance. When they could choose between polluted and unpolluted fungi and substrate, F. fimetarioides significantly avoided the polluted source while I. minor did not. Both species were negatively affected by drought. I. minor was more tolerant than F. fimetarioides when exposed to drought in combination with metal pollution. High supply of preferred fungal species and a better ability to avoid heavy metals favour F. fimetarioides and determine its dominance over I. minor in polluted soils.  相似文献
