The effect of predator and prey body size on the feeding success of the British lake-dwelling leeches Glossiphonia complanata and Helobdella stagnalis was examined in the laboratory, and any involvement of size difference between the leeches in allowing coexistence in the field assessed. G. complanata breeds in advance of H. stagnalis and maintains a body size advantage throughout their annual life-cycle. In experiments, conducted at 14 °C and a photoperiod of 16 hrs L: 8 hrs D, three size classes of leeches of each species were each exposed to each of three size classes of each of five prey species, viz. Tubifex sp., Chironomus sp., Asellus aquaticus, Lymnaea peregra and Potamopyrgus jenkinsi. For each prey species, three different types of experiments were performed: one leech exposed to four prey individuals; four leeches of the same species with sixteen prey; and two leeches of each species with sixteen prey. In the first experiment, all sizes of G. complanata were capable of feeding on all sizes of the prey types offered; the same was true for H. stagnalis with exceptions of feeding on large A. aquaticus and large L. peregra. For both species, but especially for G. complanata, there was a trend within each size class of leech for decreasing proportions of fed leeches with increasing prey size, and within each size class of prey for an increasing proportion of fed leeches with increasing leech size; however there were several exceptions to these trends. Both leeches fed extensively on Tubifex sp. but there were significant differences in the proportions feeding on other prey types; G. complanata fed more on A. aquaticus and the two snail species, and less on Chironomus, than H. stagnalis. The effect of increasing the number of leech individuals from one to four individuals, of the same or mixed species, had little effect on the proportion of leeches which had fed. It is concluded that large G. complanata will have access to large individuals of certain prey taxa denied H. stagnalis, which may lessen the intensity of interspecific competition.  相似文献

The glossiphoniid leeches Helobdella stagnalis and Glossiphonia complanata co-exist on the stony shores of British lakes. Because both species have a similar life-style and are food limited, the question arises as to how coexistence persists. Laboratory experiments investigated if either leech has a competitive advantage on three foods, viz. oligochaete worms (Tubifex sp.), snails (Lymnaea peregra), and a worm-plus-snail mixture. A variety of densities with a range of ratios of the two leeches, and monospecific controls were used. The level of feeding ensured increasing food shortage with rising leech density. Experiments, conducted at 14° C, lasted 3 months. Regression values for growth against density in the controls indicated the occurrence of intraspecific competition in both leech species. Light mortality occurred at the highest densities. G. complanata gained significantly less weight in mixed leech cultures than in monospecific cultures at some of the highest densities when fed worms, but more weight when fed on snails. The opposite was true for H. stagnalis. When both prey types were provided, no differences at any density were observed for either leech. Differences in bodysize and feeding strategy between the leeches may be implicated in determining their feeding success on the prey types. Because the anti-predatory responses (e.g. shaking) exhibited by L. peregra are less when encountering an inactive than an active leech, the sit-and-wait strategy of G. complanata may aid snail capture. In contrast, the seek-out strategy of H. stagnalis, coupled with its relatively smaller size, may result in fewer successful captures. The active hunting strategy of H. stagnalis may be advantageous for the capture of oligochaetes which are relatively less mobile than snails. Offering both prey types simultaneously would have had an ameliorating influence on interactions between the two leeches. Findings provide support for the hypothesis that long-term co-existence between the two glossiphoniids in British lakes may depend, in part at least, on the occurrence of a snail food refuge for G. complanata.  相似文献

1. Three species of leeches, Erpobdella octoculata, Glossiphonia complanata and Helobdella stagnalis, and four species of triclads, Polycelis nigra, P. tennis, Dugesia polychroa and Dendrocoelum lacteum, commonly coexist on stony shores in productive British lakes. All species are food limited and there is much overlap in their diet. For both leech and triclad communities, coexistence of species is through the occurrence of food refuges. Leeches are more successful than triclads at capturing live prey, whereas both groups feed on damaged prey, comprising incapacitated, live or dead animals that are leaking body fluids. If triclads are better than leeches at exploiting damaged prey, this could be a mechanism for their coexistence. 2. Laboratory experiments investigated the comparative speeds at which leeches and triclads responded to crushed prey. Young and adult predators were offered a crushed specimen of the oligochaete Tubifex tubifex, the snail Lymnaea peregra, the crustacean Asellus aquaticus or the chironomid Chironomus sp., and their reaction times recorded. These four prey groups constitute the main diet of the predators in the field. Only D. polychroa and D. lacteum showed a significantly different reaction time between young and adults to crushed prey, and the reason for this is unclear. All predators, except H. stagnalis and D. polychroa, showed a difference in reaction time to the four types of prey, presumably a consequence of differences in both the ‘quality’ and ‘concentration’ of the different prey fluids, and there were some differences between predators in their speed of reaction to the same prey type. The following sequence, from fastest to slowest, in general reaction time to prey was obtained: E. octoculata, D. polychroa, P. tenuis, D. lacteum, P. nigra, H. stagnalis and G. complanata. 3. The location of the damaged food by the predators can be explained partly in terms of their foraging behaviour, with E. octoculata, D, polychroa and P. tenuis exhibiting a more seek-out strategy than other species which have a more sit-and-wait behaviour, and partly on the level of sophistication of their chemosensory system used to detect leaked prey fluids. This system is highly developed in triclad species but poorly developed in leeches. 4. In a second type of experiment in which prey, L. peregra, A. aquaticus or Chironomus sp., were offered at different time intervals after crushing to H, stagnalis and P. tenuis, few predators fed on food crushed for 24 h or longer, although a few leeches fed on Chironomus crushed for up to 72 h. 5. It is concluded that coexistence of leech and triclad species on stony shores in lakes is assisted by partitioning of food on a damaged or live basis.  相似文献

Seven species of leeches have been recorded in Rutland Water between September 1977 and October 1979 by monthly samples taken by Ekman grab.The preliminary analysis of leeches from the four study sites of the reservoir (46 grab samples) showed that Helobdella stagnalis was the most abundant species with Erpobdella octoculata and Glossiphonia complanata (cf. Bullock et al. 1982). The life cycle of H. stagnalis was elucidated from these samples by dividing the animals into weight classes (2 mg live weight) and revealed that this species has two breeding seasons. The overwintering population reproduces in June. The juveniles grow rapidly and produce the next generation in August and September. This life cycle is similar to that reported in Europe and Canada.The population density ranged from 32 m–2 to 90 m–2, being generally higher during Summer and Autumn after breeding, but low in Winter and Spring. The population biomass increased from June until October each year because of high growth and then declined through the Winter. There are marked variations in density and biomass between the two years of the study period, which probably reflects the dramatic change in benthic abundance and distribution found in many new impoundments.In order to calculate the energy budget, the respiration rate of H. stagnalis has been studied by using a Gilson respirometer operated at three temperatures 5 °C, 10 °C and 15 °C, and the respiration rate of individual H. stagnalis increased logarithmically with weight. The relationship between O2 consumption and dry weight was examined using linear regression (log/log) for the three temperatures. There are significant differences between the three regressions with slopes of 0.54, 0.69, and 0.73 at 5 °C, 10 °C and 15 °C respectively. The repiratory coefficient (Q10) for the range 5 °C to 15 °C was almost constant for all class weights.The food of the leech was determined qualitatively by exposing potential prey organisms to it, using all the common zoobenthos of Rutland Water. H. stagnalis fed extensively on oligochaetes (Tubificidea). Food consumption was estimated at the three different test temperatures for different weight classes. Similar studies have been undertaken on E. octoculata and G. complanata.  相似文献

The triclads Polycelis tenuis and Dugesia polychroa and the glossiphoniid leeches Glossiphonia complanata and Helobdella stagnalis are abundant on the stony shores of productive British lakes. All species are food limited and there is considerable overlap in the diets of these triclads and leeches. This paper investigates interactions between the two groups using field and laboratory experiments to try to identify the mechanism of their co-existence. Triclad and leech numbers were manipulated inside experimental enclosures, mathced by controls, erected on the stony shore of an eutrophic English lake. Increasing the numbers of P. tenuis and D. polychroa prior to the reproductive season in spring resulted in a significant decrease in the numbers and body size of G. complanata and H. stagnalis compared with control populations in the summer months, and vice versa. However, increases and decreases were temporary with a readjustment of numbers and body size to control levels in the autumn after reproduction had ceased. It is suggested that increasing the numbers of either group elevated the severity of both intra- and interspecific competition for food. The condition of prey may, in part, determine the strength of competition, and this was examined in laboratory experiments in which different densities and ratios of P. tenuis and H. stagnalis were offered either live of recently crushed Asellus aquaticus. In monospecific controls, growth rates of P. tenuis were greater when fed on crushed than live Asellus, but there was no significant difference in the growth of H. stagnalis fed either live or crushed prey. In mixed cultures of predators, P. tenuis and H. stagnalis were the superior competitors when fed on crushed and live Asellus, respectively. However, when competitive pressure was low, at low densities of predators, the presence of H. stagnalis in mixed cultures fed on live prey was beneficial to the growth of P. tenuis. These results are explained in terms of the greater ability of triclads to detect damaged prey, leaking body fluids, due to their sophisticated chemosensory system, and the ability of leeches to capture live prey due to the presence of suckers. It is concluded that co-existence of the two groups in British lakes is assisted by the partitioning of food on a live or damaged basis.  相似文献

The food niches of four species of triclads and three species of non-parasitic leeches living in the littoral zone of British lakes of different trophic status were investigated, over one year, using a serological technique. Antisera against ten potential prey groups were employed. The basic data were adjusted to compensate for differences in predator size and seasonal changes in field temperatures. Data on two of the leech species have been presented elsewhere, but comparisons of the diet of all seven predator species are made in this paper. Much overlap in diet between the various predator species occurs, but, with one exception, each of the genera has a major food resource. The Polycelis spp. feed extensively on oligochaetes, Dugesia polychroa on molluscs, Dendrocoelum lacteum on Asellus, Erpobdella octoculata on chironomids and Glossiphonia complanata on molluscs. Helobdella stagnalis is a generalist feeder. Problems of coexistence of the leech species, and of the leech and triclad species are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Predator-prey interactions between the predatory leech, Glossiphonia complanata, and its gastropod prey were investigated in laboratory experiments, including behavioural observations with the aid of time-lapse video technique. Six gastropod species were investigated, viz. Lymnaea peregra, Planorbis planorbis, Physa fontinalis, Ancylus fluviatilis, Bithynia tentaculata, and Theodoxus fluviatilis. The species studied exhibited anti-predator defences, which had their maximum efficiency at different stages of encounter with G. complanata. The activity of B. tentaculata decreased with increasing leech activity, but was relatively higher when food was present than when not. Handling times were dependent on the time elapsed since the previous meal was captured (intercatch interval), which in turn was related to the size of the previous prey. Handling time was also related to the size of both predator and prey. The capture efficiency was high for small prey and the leeches spent more time in patches with higher yield. They were, however, unable to discriminate between patches of different prey density.  相似文献

The natural feeding and competitive interactions between populations of Erpobdella ostoculata and Erpobdella testacea were investigated in Lake Esrom, Denmark, during 1979/80. Statistical analysis revealed that the size of the leeches was the main factor involved in resource utilization. Size-specific feeding included differences in the numerical composition of diets and the size of individual prey. Five weight classes of Erpobdella spp. were distinguished. The number of prey per leech increased from 1.63-2.84 for the first to the fifth weight class, whereas diversity in feeding averaged 1.71 prey per leech. Quantification of competitive interactions indicated that the temporal differences in weight class composition of the two species were sufficient to explain coexistence, although both species have an annual life cycle, and neither species showed taxonomic food refuges.  相似文献

According to Bennike (1943) the leech fauna in Lake Esrom, Denmark, includes two types of Glossiphonia complanata (L.), namely G. complanata typica Bennike, 1943 and G. complanata concolor (Apáthy, 1888). The results of the present investigation, which were based on material collected in 1975, 1976, and 1980, strongly indicated that we are dealing with two species in Lake Esrom, namely Glossiphonia complanata (L.) and G. (Clepsine) concolor (Apáthy). The two species have a rather similar life history, but G. complanata is on average larger than G. concolor. Differences in reproduction included size of eggs and timing of breeding, but the number of offspring seemed to be similar. Tank experiments revealed that all offspring of G. complanata had a conspecific parent, and likewise for G. concolor. The general appearance of the two species is significantly different, and the average ratio of body width to body height (W/H ratio) was ca. 30% higher for preserved individuals of G. complanata than for G. concolor. The ecological distribution of the two types, and the reliability of pigmentation as a diagnostical tool in leech systematics are discussed. The defence reaction of operculum closing in response to the presence of the molluscivorous leech Glossiphonia complanata (L.) and the non-molluscivorous Erpobdella octoculata (L.) was studied in four species of freshwater prosobranch gastropod. Bithynia tentaculata (L.) and Valvata piscinalis (Müller) can distinguish between the leeches, reacting only to G. complanata. V. piscinalis is capable of a greater degree of distance chemoreception of the leech ‘scent’. Valvata cristata Müller and Potamopyrgus jenkinsi (Smith) did not react to either leech. V. cristata may not be a potential prey item for G. complanata, while P. jenkinsi is fed on by the leech, but is a relative newcomer to the freshwater fauna. Seasonal freshwater discharge was important for defining habitat utilization by different ontogenetic phases of Stellifer brasiliensis and Stellifer stellifer along the estuarine ecocline. The middle estuary was important as a nursery and feeding ground for young‐of‐the‐year, and a feeding ground for sub‐adults and adults of both species. These species are zoobenthivorous, but during their life cycle and between different habitats and seasons, their trophic guild can change to opportunist and zooplanktivore. During the late rainy season in the lower estuary, all phases of both species, except juveniles of S. brasiliensis and adults of S. stellifer, showed a niche overlap indicating similarity in prey utilization. The diet composition was qualitatively similar, showing an evident niche overlap of intra and interspecific competition among the Stellifer spp. Although the niches of these species appeared to significantly overlap, some resource partitioning patterns were apparent. The niche overlap was significantly reduced due to the seasonal difference in habitat use and prey consumption along the ecocline of the estuary by different ontogenetic phases. Prey utilization by the generalist predator Coleomegilla maculata lengi Timb. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) of three sympatric lepidopterous species was quantified in relation with prey size (age) and prey species. Based on optimal foraging theory, we argued that costs associated with the utilization of small and large prey are higher than those of intermediate prey size. As a result, we expected a higher prey consumption rate on intermediate prey size leading to a convex prey consumption curve. Laboratory experiments showed that, within a given prey instar, Coleomegilla maculata lengi preyed more on Plutella xylostella (L.) compared to Artogeia rapae (L.) and Trichoplusia ni (Hübner). Generally, prey consumption rate by Coleomegilla maculata lengi on the three prey species decreased with increasing immature prey size (age). The predation efficacy of Coleomegilla maculata lengi adults and fourth instar larvae was higher compared to younger coccinellids (L2). Although, Coleomegilla maculata lengi showed a higher level of predation on smaller immature prey, we demonstrated that it is not the optimal size range for this predator. As predicted, prey weight consumption rate by Coleomegilla maculata lengi was higher at intermediate prey size leading to a convex prey utilization curve. The beneficial impact of Coleomegilla maculata lengi predation on the host plant was also estimated by using a Protection Index that considers the differential predation caused by the coccinellids and the relative importance of each pest species in terms of plant injury. Coleomegilla maculata lengi has a more significant beneficial impact when it preys on T. ni immatures.  相似文献

The feeding habits and trophic ecology of Mustelus lunulatus and Mustelus henlei in the central coast of the Colombian Pacific were evaluated and compared to determine whether there was trophic niche overlap or resource partitioning between these two sympatric shark species. A total of 59 prey items were identified and grouped into 10 taxonomic categories. Mustelus lunulatus fed in large proportion on Stomatopoda and Brachyura, whereas M. henlei fed almost exclusively on Teleostei. Dendrobranchiata, Cephalopoda, Anomura and Polychaeta complemented the diets of both species. There were significant differences in diet between the two species, and there was an ontogenetic diet shift in Mustelus lunulatus, with Stomatopoda being the main prey item of juveniles and Brachyura the main prey item of adults. Dietary overlap (by sex and size) was low between species, but it was high for each species, with significant overlap between juveniles and adults of M. lunulatus and M. henlei, and between males and females of M. henlei. There were differences in the trophic levels of the species, sexes and sizes. This study suggests there is food resource partitioning, and differing ecological function of the two Mustelus species in the food web of the study area.  相似文献

Summary The trophic ecology of eleven predator species (Falconiforms: Buteo polyosoma, Elanus leucurus, Falco sparverius, Geranoaetus melanoleucus, Parabuteo unicinctus; Strigiforms: Athene cunicularia, Bubo virginianus, Tyto alba; Carnivores: Dusicyon culpaeus; Snakes: Philodryas chamissonis, Tachymenis peruviana) in two nearby localities of central Chile is analyzed. The localities exhibit the typical climate (hot-dry summers, coldrainy winters), and vegetation (chaparral), of mediterranean ecosystems. Densities of the staple prey (small mammals) were estimated by seasonal trapping during two years in both open and dense patches of chaparral.The trophic parameters examined are: 1) proportion of diurnal, crepuscular, or nocturnal prey found in the predators' diet; 2) relationship between abundance of different mammalian prey in the predators' diet, and in both open and densely vegetated habitat patches; 3) mean weight and variance of weight of small mammal prey consumed; 4) average weight of the predators; 5) food-niche breadth of the predators; 6) relationship between average weight of predators and mean weight of mammalian prey taken, its variance, and food-niche breadth; 7) overlap in food-niche between all the predator species; 8) guild packing of the predators. Parameters 1) and 2) are used to assess the importance of temporal and habitat segregation of the predators, respectively; parameters 3), 4), 5), and 6) provide information on the possibilities of partitioning the prey resources among the predators; parameters 1), 2), 7) and 8) are used to investigate the organization of the community in terms of guilds.Three niche dimensions seem to be important in determining the structure of the predator community: 1) hunting activity period (diurno-crepuscular, nocturno-crepuscular), 2) hunting habitat (open, or both open and dense patches), and 3) mean prey size taken. Segregation along these three axes results in generally low food niche overlaps (<54% in 47 of the 55 pairwise comparisons) among the predators, but it is not possible to determine whether this was produced by competitive interactions or stochastic differences. Three guilds (niche overlap >90% in pair-wise comparisons) can be recognized: a) the carnivorous-insectivorous guild formed by the diurnal raptors A. cunicularia and F. sparverius, which tend to hunt in open habitat patches; b) the herpetophagous guild formed by the diurnal snakes P. chamissonis and T. peruviana, which presumably hunt in open habitat patches; c) the carnivorous guild (highly specialized in the capture of two rodent species) formed by the diurnal raptors B. polyosoma, G. melanoleucus, P. unicinctus, and the carnivore D. culpaeus, which hunt in open habitat patches. The diurnal raptor E. leucurus is not clearly associated with any guild, and the only two nocturnal raptors in the community (B. virginianus and T. alba) exhibit marked differences in their trophic ecology.  相似文献

Synopsis The breadth, correspondence and overlap of the diets of the small and large size classes of the three native species (Galaxias occidentalis, Bostockia porosa and Edelia vittata) and two introduced species (Gambusia holbrooki and Perca fluviatilis) of fishes found in the shallows of the main channel and in the tributary creeks of a south-western Australian river have been compared in each season. Classification and ordination were used to examine the overall interrelationships of the diets across species, size groups, seasons and the location where the fish were caught (channel or creek). The smaller fish had a narrower dietary breadth than larger fish in the spring and summer, presumably reflecting the size limit imposed on prey size by their possession of a relatively small mouth in these seasons. Intraspecific dietary overlap between large and small size classes was usually high in G. occidentalis, but generally low in G. holbrooki and P. fluviatilis, and also in B. porosa and E. vittata when the difference between the lengths of the two size groups was greatest. Dietary overlap was least in autumn when the main prey taxa were most abundant. During winter, the diets of the three native species in the tributaries converged, probably reflecting a relatively low faunal diversity in these highly seasonal water bodies. The only relatively consistent interspecific overlap in diet was between B. porosa and E. vittata. Classification and ordination of the dietary samples separated G. occidentalis (which fed extensively on terrestrial organisms from the water surface) from the smaller P. fluviatilis (that concentrated on copepods in the plankton) and from B. porosa and E. vittata (which ingested primarily benthic organisms). Furthermore, B. porosa tended to ingest larger prey taxa than E. vittata. The diet of Gambusia holbrooki is sometimes dominated by terrestrial insects and at other times by benthic organisms, demonstrating that this species is an opportunistic carnivore. It is concluded that food partitioning by the three native and two introduced fish species in the Collie River is likely to be one of the principal factors facilitating the coexistence of substantial populations of these species in this system.  相似文献

Rising temperatures likely affect the trophic interactions in temperate regions as global warming progresses. An open question is how a temperature rise may affect consumer pressure and plant abundance in shallow aquatic ecosystems, where most consumers are omnivorous. Interestingly, herbivory (plant-eating) is more prevalent toward low latitudes in ectotherms such as fish and aquatic invertebrates, and this may be temperature driven. We used pond snails (Lymnaea stagnalis L.) as a model aquatic ectotherm species and tested their consumption of both animal prey (Gammarus pulex L.) and plant material (Potamogeton lucens L.) at three different temperatures (15, 20, and 25°C). Higher temperatures led to higher consumption rates by the omnivore on both plant food and animal prey when fed separately. When the food was offered simultaneously, the pond snails consistently preferred animal prey over plant material at all tested temperatures. However, the omnivore did consume plant material even though they had enough animal prey available to them. Based on our experiments, we conclude that with increasing temperatures, L. stagnalis will only increase their consumption rates but not change food preference. Further studies are needed to test the generality of our findings across aquatic species to predict the effect of warming on aquatic plant consumption.  相似文献

Even though intra-guild predators frequently prey on the same species, it is unclear whether diet overlap between two predators is a source of interspecific competition or whether predators simply use the same abundant prey resource. We measured the extent to which the diets of barn owls (Tyto alba) and long-eared owls (Asio otus) in Israel overlap and examined whether yearly differences in diet overlap correlate with barn owl breeding success. Pianka’s index of niche overlap was positively related to barn owl population size but not to its breeding success. The number of breeding barn owls was higher when long-eared owls consumed more rodents, suggesting that diet overlap most likely increased when rodents became more abundant. Therefore, in Israel, when these two owl species prey more often on rodents, their diets are more similar and interspecific competition is reduced. Unlike sympatric populations in Europe, in years when rodents are less abundant in Israel long-eared owls switch to hunting alternative prey (e.g., birds), perhaps to avoid competition with barn owls.  相似文献

In this study, the interactions between two semi-aquatic mammals, the endangered Pyrenean desman Galemys pyrenaicus and the Eurasian water shrew Neomys fodiens, were investigated through the analysis of their summer diet using next-generation sequencing methods, combined with analyses of prey selectivity and trophic overlap. The diet of these predators was highly diverse including 194 and 205 genera for G. pyrenaicus and N. fodiens respectively. Overall, both species exhibited rather non-selective foraging strategies as the most frequently consumed invertebrates were also the most frequent and abundant in the streams. This supported a generalist foraging behaviour for G. pyrenaicus and N. fodiens in the study area. The Pianka index (0.4) indicated a significant but moderate dietary overlap as G. pyrenaicus mostly relied on prey with aquatic stages whereas prey of N. fodiens were mainly terrestrial. Moreover, no difference in G. pyrenaicus prey consumption was found in presence or absence of N. fodiens. A differential use of trophic resources through mechanisms such as plastic feeding behaviour or differences in foraging micro-habitat are likely to facilitate the coexistence between these two mammal species.  相似文献

Most recorded extinctions have occurred on oceanic islands, mainly as a result of introduced mammalian predators. The impact of introduced non-mammalian competitors, however, is poorly understood. The house gecko, Hemidactylus frenatus, is one of the most successful invasive reptiles and has been implicated in the decline of endemic geckos and other taxa on a number of tropical and subtropical islands. We investigated the patterns of niche utilization between the house gecko and endemic ornate day gecko, Phelsuma ornata, in Mauritius, two species which were not believed to compete because they had different diel activity periods. The dietary and temporal niche partitioning of the two species were examined in relation to seasonal invertebrate prey abundance for three seasons. Dietary overlap between the two species was least when prey abundance was lowest and temporal overlap in activity greatest. Exploitative competition was therefore inferred, whereby changes in dietary overlap were attributed to shifts in prey selection by the day, but not the house, gecko, which was hypothesized to deplete prey. The compensatory response of the day gecko may have been to increase its tendency for cannibalism, such that the smaller house gecko was indirectly responsible for population reduction of its larger competitor. This is the first study to show how an invasive nocturnal gecko may be affecting a predominantly diurnal species.  相似文献
