All insect ovaries are composed of functional units called ovarioles, which contain sequentially developing egg chambers. The number of ovarioles varies between and within species. Ovariole number is an important determinant of fecundity and thus affects individual fitness. Although Drosophila oogenesis has been intensively studied, the genetic and cellular basis for determination of ovariole number remains unknown. Ovariole formation begins during larval development with the morphogenesis of terminal filament cells (TFCs) into stacks called terminal filaments (TFs). We induced changes in ovariole number in Drosophila melanogaster by genetically altering cell size and cell number in the TFC population, and analyzed TF morphogenesis in these ovaries to understand the cellular basis for the changes in ovariole number. Increasing TFC size contributed to higher ovariole number by increasing TF number. Similarly, increasing total TFC number led to higher ovariole number via an increase in TF number. By analyzing ovarian morphogenesis in another Drosophila species we showed that TFC number regulation is a target of evolutionary change that affects ovariole number. In contrast, temperature-dependent plasticity in ovariole number was due to changes in cell-cell sorting during TF morphogenesis, rather than changes in cell size or cell number. We have thus identified two distinct developmental processes that regulate ovariole number: establishment of total TFC number, and TFC sorting during TF morphogenesis. Our data suggest that the genetic changes underlying species-specific ovariole number may alter the total number of TFCs available to contribute to TF formation. This work provides for the first time specific and quantitative developmental tools to investigate the evolution of a highly conserved reproductive structure.  相似文献

Intraspecific variability in number of larval instars in insects   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The number of larval instars varies widely across insect species. Although instar number is frequently considered to be invariable within species, intraspecific variability in the number of instars is not an exceptional phenomenon. However, the knowledge has remained fragmentary, and there are no recent attempts to synthesize the results of relevant studies. Based on published case studies, we show that intraspecific variability in the number of larval instars is widespread across insect taxa, occurring in most major orders, in both hemimetabolous and holometabolous insects. We give an overview of various factors that have been observed to affect the number of instars. Temperature, photoperiod, food quality and quantity, humidity, rearing density, physical condition, inheritance, and sex are the most common factors influencing the number of instars. We discuss adaptive scenarios that may provide ultimate explanations for the plasticity in instar number. The data available largely support the compensation scenario, according to which instar number increases in adverse conditions when larvae fail to reach a species-specific threshold size for metamorphosis. However, in Orthoptera and Coleoptera, there are some exceptional species in which instar number is higher in favorable conditions. In more specific cases, the adaptive value of the variability in instar number may be in reaching or maintaining the developmental stage adapted to hibernation, producing additional generations in multivoltine species, or increasing the probability of surviving in long-lasting adverse conditions.  相似文献

Membrane potentials of different types of cells in the pancreatic head of guinea-pigs were studied in vivo, using intracellular microelectrode technique. Cellular distribution was determined at different depths: 0-150 microns, 150-500 microns, 500-900 microns. It was established that the maximum number of low polarized cells (30.2%) with membrane potential (MP) up to 30 mV and a smaller number of highly polarized cells (25.8%) were situated in the external layer of the dorsal gland areas. There is a trend towards the increase in the number of highly polarized cells (35.2%) with simultaneous reduction in the number of low polarized cells (19.6%) in the middle layer. The maximum number of highly polarized cells was situated in the deep layers because of the increase in the number of cells with MP level from 50 to 60 mV and the reduction in the number of low polarized cells (12.3%). The number of cells with MP from 30 to 50 mV in external, middle, and deep layers remains practically unchanged. It is believed that with the intact blood circulation and regulation in the pancreas it is possible not only to register various types of cells, but also to examine them in various layers.  相似文献

We examined the effects of several variables on the number of live births in multiparous females in a wild population of golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia). Independent variables included the number of infants born to a female the previous breeding season, the number of infants weaned the previous breeding season, the female's age and body mass, the number of adult males and helpers in the group, and the inbreeding coefficient of the offspring. We also tested the hypothesis that trapping and chemical immobilization during pregnancy affected the number of live births. Female body mass was the only statistically significant predictor of the number of live-born infants in the current season when both first and second peaks were included. Characteristics that predicted higher numbers of infants in the first peak of a season were the number of infants born the previous season and the body mass of the female. The greater the number of infants born the previous season, the greater the number of infants born in the first peak of the current season. Factors positively correlated with the number of live births in the second peak within a season included the number of infants born the previous season, as well as the number of available helpers. Due to sample size constraints, the analysis of litters in the second peak did not include body mass of the female as a variable. Inbreeding and handling did not affect the number of live births. We found no evidence that current reproduction negatively impacts future reproduction in this species. We also found no evidence for an age-related reduction in fertility.  相似文献

Compensation in grain yield components in a panicle of rainfed sorghum   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In a field experiment with rainfed grown sorghum hybrid CSH-6, various proportions of spikelets from the apex, base or random regions of the panicles were removed at the time of anthesis and the yield compensation in grain number and grain size within a panicle was investigated. The distribution of grain number and grain yield in a control panicle from apex to base was parabolic while grain size showed a progressive linear decrease. Full grain yield compensation occurred due to an increase in grain number and size when the panicles lost up to 20% of their portions at the base or at random. No grain number compensation was, however, recorded at the apical region. Irrespective of the number of spikelets retained, the size of grains in the upper part of the panicle was always larger than those in the lower part. The grain number compensation, which occurred when spikelets were removed at the time of anthesis and the decreasing grain size from apex to base of the panicle would suggest hormonal involvement in the determination of potential grain number and size.  相似文献

The number of endosperm cells in caryopses 30 ‘days’ after anthesis was determined and a positive correlation was found between endosperm cell number and 1000 grain weight, and between endosperm cell number and dry grain volume in a number of cultivars of field-grown barley. The genetic factors influencing grain weight are discussed in relation to these results and to observations made on transverse sections of immature caryopses.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of bird species was studied by grid mapping in 273 (250 × 250 m) squares in an open rural area in Denmark in summer and in winter. Species frequencies (fraction of squares with species present) followed a logarithmic linear distribution when arranged by their rank. Species frequency probably reflects relative abundance as the two variables were highly positively correlated. The number of species increased with the number of vegetation layers, ground water level, and habitat diversity. The distributional segregation of species was similar in summer and in winter, even though the winter assemblage only comprised 62% of the species present in summer. The number of species per square in winter was positively correlated with the number of species in summer; the fraction of species wintering in various habitats increased with the number of vegetation layers and the presence of human habitation. Species that flocked had a low similarity between their summer and winter distributions. Among pairs of potential competitors the smaller species either changed distribution locally or emigrated from the area in winter. The number of habitat types was reduced from 5 in summer to 4 in winter, and the number of species assemblages decreased from 5 in summer to 3 in winter. Birds were absent from 52% of the squares in winter.  相似文献

阔叶红松林是长白山林区代表性植被类型,具有较高的生物多样性。研究吉林蛟河阔叶红松林中地表甲虫多样性的时间动态,比较优势类群对时间变化的响应,为森林中地表甲虫的保护与利用提供科学依据。在2012—2013年5月中旬至8月下旬整个地表甲虫的活跃期,利用巴氏罐法在吉林蛟河阔叶红松林4个样地中共采集地表甲虫9849头,隶属于22个科79种,步甲科Carabidae、埋葬甲科Silphidae和隐翅虫科Staphylinidae为优势类群。地表甲虫的物种数、个体数和多样性指数均在7月上旬时达到最高,时间对个体数有显著影响(P0.05)。地表甲虫多样性各指数间相关性较低,个别种类对环境变化比较敏感。步甲科个体数在7月上旬显著高于其他时间,物种数与个体数的时间动态不一致,步甲科对8月上旬的适应能力强于埋葬甲科和隐翅虫科。埋葬甲科在7月上旬个体数量极显著高于其他各时间(P0.01),物种数与个体数的时间动态相一致。埋葬甲科对7月下旬适应能力强于隐翅虫科,其对时间变化的反应最敏感,当环境条件适宜时,其数量能够迅速增加。不同时间隐翅虫科的物种数与个体数变化相对较小,对时间变化的敏感程度最低。由于生活习性的特殊化,使得捕食性和腐食性地表甲虫活跃的高峰期也可能与被捕食者在各时期的数量有关。  相似文献

Estimating paternity and genetic relatedness is central to many empirical and theoretical studies of social insects. The two important measures of a queen's mating number are her actual number of mates and her effective number of mates. Estimating the effective number of mates is mathematically identical to the problem of estimating the effective number of alleles in population genetics, a common measure of genetic variability introduced by Kimura & Crow (1964). We derive a new bias-corrected estimator of effective number of types (mates or alleles) and compare this new method to previous methods for estimating true and effective numbers of types using Monte Carlo simulations. Our simulation results suggest that the examined estimators of the true number of types have very similar statistical properties, whereas the estimators of effective number of types have quite different statistical properties. Moreover, our new proposed estimator of effective number of types is approximately unbiased, and has considerably lower variance than the original estimator. Our new method will help researchers more accurately estimate intracolony genetic relatedness of social insects, which is an important measure in understanding their ecology and social behaviour. It should also be of use in population genetic studies in which the effective number of alleles is of interest.  相似文献

To determine the relative importance of gene conversion followed by natural selection and of natural selection for point mutation in generating variability in immunoglobulins, the numbers of synonymous and nonsynonymous substitutions in immunoglobulin sequences of various subgroups were estimated for complementarity-determining regions (CDRs) and for framework regions (FRs). Both the number of synonymous substitutions and the number of nonsynonymous substitutions in the CDR were found to exceed the corresponding numbers in the FR. Therefore, gene conversion is likely to be an important mechanism for providing variability in the CDR of immunoglobulins. The correlation coefficients between the number of synonymous substitutions and the number of nonsynonymous substitutions and between the substitution number in the CDR and that in the FR were found to be very low. Again, gene conversion is thought to be responsible for this finding.  相似文献

We use a minimum requirement approach to derive the number of jobs in proximity services per inhabitant in French rural municipalities. We first classify the municipalities according to their time distance in minutes by car to the municipality where the inhabitants go the most frequently to get services (called MFM). For each set corresponding to a range of time distance to MFM, we perform a quantile regression estimating the minimum number of service jobs per inhabitant that we interpret as an estimation of the number of proximity jobs per inhabitant. We observe that the minimum number of service jobs per inhabitant is smaller in small municipalities. Moreover, for municipalities of similar sizes, when the distance to the MFM increases, the number of jobs of proximity services per inhabitant increases.  相似文献

This study focuses on determining the number of children considered ideal by Pakistani husbands and identifying the factors associated with this, with a special emphasis on family type. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among married males residing in four areas of Khairpur district. An equal number of study participants were selected systematically from each field site to achieve the required sample size of 500. Interviews were conducted by trained fieldworkers using a structured questionnaire to obtain information on background socioeconomic characteristics, family structure and reproductive health knowledge and practices, in particular family planning. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess the hypothesis that family type has an independent association with husbands' idealization of a larger number of children. The mean ideal number of children perceived by husbands was four. Living in an extended family (AOR = 1.81; 95%CI: 1.11, 3.35) and being illiterate (AOR = 2.13, 95%CI; 1.33, 3.42) are significantly associated with idealization of a larger number of children by the husband, while adjusting for socioeconomic status, family structure and family planning information. Understanding the dynamics of family type and its effects on husbands' opinions regarding ideal number of children can help strengthen population control efforts in Pakistan.  相似文献

A progressive decrease in podocyte number underlies the development of glomerulosclerosis and reduced kidney function in aging nephropathy. Recent data suggest that under certain disease states, parietal epithelial cells (PECs) begin to express proteins considered specific to podocytes. To determine whether this phenomenon increases in aging kidneys, 4-, 12-, and 20-mo ad libitum-fed and 20-mo calorie-restricted (CR) rats were studied. Single and double immunostaining were performed with antibodies to the PEC protein paired box gene 2 (PAX2) and tight junction protein claudin-1, the podocyte-specific protein Wilms' tumor 1 (WT-1), and the proliferating cell protein (Ki-67). ImageJ software measured Bowman's basement membrane (BBM) length and glomerular tuft area in individual glomeruli from each animal to assess glomerular size. The results showed that in aged ad libitum rats, the decrease in number of podocytes/glomerular tuft area was accompanied by an increase in the number of PECs/BBM length at 12 and 20 mo (P < 0.01 vs. 4 mo). The increase in PEC number was due to proliferation (increase in PAX2/Ki-67 double-positive cells). Aging was accompanied by a progressive increase in the number of glomerular cells double staining for PAX2 and WT-1. In contrast, the control 20-mo-old CR rats had no increase in glomerular size, and podocyte and PEC number were not altered. These results suggest that although the number of PECs and PECs expressing podocyte proteins increase in aging nephropathy, they are likely not sufficient to compensate for the decrease in podocyte number.  相似文献

The analysis of the distribution of mutants in an exponentially growing culture of cells that are aggregated into clumps of homogeneous size is described, given the mutation rate and a random process by which clumps divide to produce progeny. The mean and standard deviation of the proportion of clumps with a given number of mutant cells at a particular time are calculated. Since the standard deviation tends to be much smaller than the mean, the following conclusions can be drawn. Aggregation lowers the number of mutant-containing clumps in cultures grown to a standard number of cells, but raises the number of mutant-containing clumps in cultures grown to a standard number of clumps. In the absence of mutation, or at low mutation rates, clumps tend to become pure types (normal or mutant). The probability of finding pure, nonmutant-containing clumps, however, is approximately the initial fraction of nonmutant cells (given realistic forward and back mutation rates). Also, in terms of the given process, it is possible to compute the probability that all the cells in an aggregate descend from a single, common parent cell within a given number of generations, and thus to calculate the probability that all the cells in a clone grown from an aggregate descend from a single cell within a known number of generations.  相似文献

Despite the growing number of sequenced bovine genomes, the knowledge of the population-wide variation of sequences remains limited. In many studies, statistical methodology was not applied in order to relate findings in the sequenced samples to a population-wide level. Our goal was to assess the population-wide variation in DNA sequence based on whole-genome sequences of 32 Holstein–Friesian cows. The number of SNPs significantly varied across individuals. The number of identified SNPs increased with coverage, following a logarithmic curve. A total of 15,272,427 SNPs were identified, 99.16 % of them being bi-allelic. Missense SNPs were classified into three categories based on their genomic location: housekeeping genes, genes undergoing strong selection, and genes neutral to selection. The number of missense SNPs was significantly higher within genes neutral to selection than in the other two categories. The number of variants located within 3′UTR and 5′UTR regions was also significantly different across gene families. Moreover, the number of insertions and deletions differed significantly among cows varying between 261,712 and 330,103 insertions and from 271,398 to 343,649 deletions. Results not only demonstrate inter-individual variation in the number of SNPs and indels but also show that the number of missense SNPs differs across genes representing different functional backgrounds.

1998年1-12月每月下旬,对皖南敬亭山茶场栗-茶间作,梨-茶间作,3行密植和单行条植茶园节肢动物群落的调查表明:植食性昆虫种数分别占各类型茶园总物种数51.9%,53.6%,54.4%和56.6%,个体数依次占各类茶园总个体数92.0%,93.5%,93.6%和95.0%,捕食性昆虫和捕食螨种数则分别占11.3%,10.0%,9.8%,10.9%,个体数占2.0%,1.1%,2.0%和1.5%,寄生性昆虫种数占9.2%,9.1%,9.3%,和9.3%,个体数占1.8%,1.1%,1.8%和1.3%。蜘蛛种数占24.7%,20.1%,22.4%和19.4%,个体数占3.5%,3.4%,2.1%和1.8%,4类茶园中的优势类群都是鳞翅目,同翅目,翅目,双翅目和蜘蛛目,月平均丰富度(S)和多样性指数H大小,栗-茶间作(S=74,H=1.33),梨-茶间作(S=49,H’=1.24),3行密植(S=31,H’=1.03)和单行条植茶园(S=23,H’=0.89),主成分分析揭示了群落稳定性的大小:栗-茶间作>梨-茶间作>3行密植>单行条植茶园。  相似文献

Daily sperm production per gram parenchyma (DSP/g) in humans is only 25 or 35% of that for most species including rats and nonhuman primates. To explain the low efficiency of spermatogenesis in humans, the number of generations of germ cells (spermatocytes and spermatids) and the number of these germ cells in each generation were determined for each spermatogenic stage in men with varied efficiencies. Testes were obtained at autopsy, fixed by vascular perfusion with glutaraldehyde, further fixed in osmium, and embedded in Epon 812 before 0.5-micron sections were stained with toluidine blue. Tubular cross sections were photographed, and spermatogenic stages were determined by two observers. Testes were divided into three groups on the basis of DSP/g. The number of generations of spermatocytes and spermatids was greater (p < 0.05) in the high (2.01 +/- 0.05) and intermediate (1.77 +/- 0.04) than in the low (1.45 +/- 0.15) DSP/g group. All groups had a lower number of generations of spermatocytes and spermatids compared to the optimum value of three. The number of these generations per cross section was related (r = 0.85; p < 0.01) to DSP/g in these men. The number per cross section of spermatocytes, spermatids, and the combined number of germ cells was higher (p < 0.01) in the high than in the low DSP/g group. The combined number of germ cells per cross section was related (r = 0.85; p < 0.01) to DSP/g. Cell numbers and cellular composition were examined in vermiform larvae of 44 species of dicyemid mesozoans phylum Dicyemida belonging to six genera: Conocyema , Dicyema , Dicyemennea , Dicyemodeca , Microcyema and Pseudicyema . In addition, the literature on vermiform larvae of another 59 species was reviewed. Vermiform larvae typically have a constant number of peripheral cells that are species specific. Interspecific variations in the total number of peripheral cells range from 10 to 39. The most frequent number is either 22 or 23. Differences in the total number of peripheral cells are mostly due to differences in the number of trunk peripheral cells, such as parapolar cells, diapolar cells and uropolar cells. The body length of vermiform larvae is positively correlated with the number of trunk peripheral cells. Interspecific variations in the total number of trunk peripheral cells range from 2 to 31. The most frequent number is 14. In species with 14 trunk peripheral cells, individual variations of cell numbers were minimal. In species with more trunk peripheral cells, some individual variations appeared. Increase and decrease of trunk cell number might cause diversity of dicyemids, which is possibly related to speciation in these simple multicellular animals.  相似文献

In this paper, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study the assembly of DNA-grafted nanoparticles to demonstrate specifically the effect of bidispersity in grafted DNA strand length on the thermodynamics and structure of nanoparticle assembly at varying number of grafted single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) strands and number of guanine/cytosine (G/C) bases per strand. At constant number of grafted ssDNA strands and G/C nucleotides per strand, as bidispersity in strand lengths increases, the number of nanoparticles that assemble as well as the number of neighbours per particle in the assembled cluster increases. When the number of G/C nucleotides per strand in short and long strands is equal, the long strands hybridise with the other long strands with higher frequency than the short strands hybridise with short/long strands. This dominance of the long strands leads to bidisperse systems having similar thermodynamics to that in corresponding systems with monodisperse long strands. Structurally, however, as a result of long–long, long–short and short–short strand hybridisation, bidispersity in DNA strand length leads to a broader inter-particle distance distribution within the assembled cluster than seen in systems with monodisperse short or monodisperse long strands. The effect of increasing the number of G/C bases per strand or increasing the number of grafted DNA strands on the thermodynamics of assembly is similar for bidisperse and monodisperse systems. The effect of increasing the number of grafted ssDNA strands on the structure of the assembled cluster is dependent on the extent of strand bidispersity because the presence of significantly shorter ssDNA strands among long ssDNA strands reduces the crowding among the strands at high grafting density. This relief in crowding leads to larger number of strands hybridised and as a result larger coordination number in the assembled cluster in systems with high bidispersity in strands than in corresponding monodisperse or low bidispersity systems.  相似文献
