The planktonic copepod Acartia hudsonica apparently requires summer diapause or dormancy to persist in Narragansett Bay, RI. In estuaries to the north, however, active A. hudsonica populations are present year-round and may not express dormancy. Using a full-sibling rearing design and analysis of variance (ANOVA), I assessed the importance of phenotypic and genetic sources of variation in two geographically separate populations, one from Maine and one from Rhode Island. Both populations showed phenotypic plasticity in the percentage of dormant eggs produced. Moreover, experiments revealed significant sibship-environment interactions in both populations, indicating that the phenotypic plasticity has a genetic component. Both populations also revealed a significant amount of genetic variation in the percentage of dormant eggs produced. For the Maine population, broad sense heritability was high (0.91, 1.10) in two short-day (12L:12D) treatments and near zero (0.08) in the long-day treatment (15L:9D). For a Rhode Island population, broad sense heritability was higher (0.95) in a low-temperature short-day treatment (13.5 °C, 12L:12D) than in a high-temperature short-day treatment (17.5 °C, 12L:12D; h2=0.25).  相似文献

We conducted a two-year study to assess how plankton composition and water quality impacts the distribution, densities, condition, growth, biochemical composition and reproductive success of juvenile and adult Mercenaria mercenaria (L.) in Long Island's south shore estuaries (LISSE). Juvenile and adult hard clams were placed in suspended cages at 10 locations ranging from the ocean inlets to locations furthest from inlets in Shinnecock Bay (SB), the eastern-most barrier island estuary of LISSE, and Great South Bay (GSB), the western-most barrier island estuary of LISSE. Phytoplankton community composition, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and clam growth and condition were monitored bi-weekly. A benthic survey of M. mercenaria densities in both estuaries was also conducted. In both 2004 and 2005, juveniles in central bay locations had significantly faster growth rates, lower mortality rates, and higher lipid content relative to sites closest to the inlets. Adult hard clams closest to the Fire Island inlet also had significantly lower condition indexes compared to mid-bay stations and densities of wild M. mercenaria populations in both estuaries were lower near inlets compared to locations further from inlets. In addition to substantial spatial differences within each estuary, differences were also observed between the embayments as juvenile clams in SB grew approximately twice as fast as those in GSB and adults in SB had significantly greater condition indexes than clams in GSB. Instantaneous juvenile growth rates were highly correlated to temperatures below 24 °C (p < 0.0001) and were also significantly correlated with several indicators of suspended food quantity and food quality (centric diatoms, phytoplankton cells > 5 μm, and dinoflagellates (inverse correlation)) which co-varied independently of temperature. In sum, these results suggest tidal exchange in LISSE promotes a water quality regime (cold water, with low food concentration) which would reduce the growth of juvenile clams and the overall reproductive success of adult hard clams located near newly-formed ocean inlets. However, increased exchange for regions furthest from inlets could enhance juvenile clam growth rates by reducing summer peak temperatures (> 24 °C) and densities of poor food sources (dinoflagellates).  相似文献

As a result of acclimation populations of long-lived ectotherms should display lowered ability to counter cold stress in warmer periods of active season, and increased resistance in colder ones. We tested this proposition by investigating dynamics of cold resistance in Myrmica ants during most of the active season in two types of habitats. Resistance of ants to knock-down by cold and their rate of recovery after chill coma were expected to be lower in summer.Cooled at a rate of 0.17 °C min−1, the ants showed lower capability to resist knock-down in summer, and a significant lowering in knock-down temperature in response to colder weather both in spring and autumn as confirmed by linear regression against air temperatures. In a more eurytopic species M. rubra the responses were significantly faster in meadow than in forest habitats. However, times of recovery of the ants after 10 min at −3 °C did not change in parallel to air temperatures. Whereas M. rubra from forest habitats took less time to recover in early summer and early autumn, in their conspecifics from meadow habitats the contrary was the case. Regardless of habitat, recoveries tended to be faster in other investigated species, of which M. ruginodis (a forest stenotopic) recovered faster in early summer than later.According to the knock-down data, in warmer months the ants are indeed less resistant to cold stress, whilst the recovery data do not always support the proposition. The contrasting seasonal dynamics of the two measures of low-temperature resistance in field-fresh Myrmica suggest that knock-down (chill coma onset) is a better index of thermal acclimation, whilst the rate of recovery from chill coma is more indicative of interspecific differences and, possibly, behavioural thermoregulation.  相似文献

The seasonal variations of bacterial and phytoplanktonic biomass were studied during several pluri-annual surveys in the subantarctic Morbihan Bay (Kerguelen Islands, 49 ° 20 S; 70 ° 10 E). Large interannual variation was observed. Phytoplanktonic biomass showed moderate values during winter and autumn. They increased sharply in spring, reaching a maximum value of about 1 mg C l–1 corresponding to an important depletion of nutrients. A second phytoplanktonic bloom of similar amplitude occurred in late summer. During algal blooms which were roughly associated with optimal values of solar irradiation for the first one and with the highest temperatures for the second one, phytoplanktonic material represented near 100% of particulate and living carbon. Bacteria showed maximal abundance (0.2 to 0.7 mg C l–1) during summer or autumn. Their relative abundance, which represented less than 1% of the living biomass in spring and summer, can reach more than 95% in autumn and winter.  相似文献

Planktonic marine invertebrate embryos and larvae experience high mortality rates. Processes during these early vulnerable stages of development are an important determinant of the dynamics of marine invertebrate populations. In order to evaluate possible specific local adaptations of the bivalve Macoma balthica (L.), larvae from parents living in Norway (Balsfjord) and France (Gironde Estuary) were reared in the laboratory at 10, 15 and 20 °C. The rate of growth and the time it took to develop a foot were measured. Larvae grew faster and developed quicker at higher temperatures. This was true for both origins tested. Within temperature treatments, the French larvae always developed and grew fastest. Size at metamorphosis (defined as the appearance of the foot) was 250 μm (SD=12.7) in five out of the six cases; the only exception was Norwegian larvae kept at the highest temperature that metamorphosed at a smaller size (229 μm, SD=6.4). Size at metamorphosis thus appears to be largely independent of temperature. In both populations, instantaneous survival rates declined with temperature with no effect of origin. Instantaneous survival declined faster with temperature than development rates increased, resulting in lower net survival of larvae to metamorphosis at the higher temperatures. Although the French larvae had a shorter development time at the same temperature than the Norwegian larvae, the total survival of larvae from the two origins was not significantly different. The larvae of M. balthica of both populations prove to be tolerant to considerably higher rearing temperatures than they will ever experience in their natural habitat.  相似文献

The annual cycle of abundance and the monthly distributions of the copepod Centropages typicus are described for US Northeast Continental Shelf waters from samples collected on broadscale plankton surveys during 1977-87. High numbers of the copepod were captured throughout the region during the autumn months in weak south-north and onshore-offshore abundance gradients. The highest individual station densities were found near the mouth of the major estuaries and the heaviest broad-scale concentrations were usually located where bottom depth ranged from 20 to 39 m. Numbers declined throughout the ecosystem after winter arrived, less so in the southern half of the region where C.typicus abundance remained high year round in nearshore and midshelf waters between New York City and Chesapeake Bay. The copepod's abundance fell to much lower levels further north in the Georges Bank and Gulf of Maine subareas, and disappeared entirely from shelf waters in the northernmost offshore region until summer. Interannual abundance variability was substantial, but no long-term trend was detected. Analyses of samples collected from 1988 to 1996 on Georges Bank during early autumn indicate that abundance levels of C.typicus have been high here in the 1990s, completely recovered from low density values measured there in 1986 and 1987. Temperature and food availability were found to be the key factors that determine the copepod's distribution and annual abundance cycle. Mean abundance was high throughout the ecosystem where surface temperature was >9C and in regions where annual mean chlorophyll levels exceeded 1 mg m-3. The copepod's abundance appeared to be independent from variation in water column salinity.   相似文献

The surface deposit feeding speciesPygospio elegans andMacoma balthica are dominant members of many sandy bottom communities of northern boreal regions. The feeding mode of both species and the tube-building ofP. elegans are assumed to affect community structure by interactions with other species. The weight of tubes ofP. elegans varied between 2 and 13 g DW/100 cm2 at the two stations investigated and during the year, which is equivalent to 230–1500 cm of tubes per 100 cm2 of sediment surface. Sediment stability may be affected directly or indirectly by the amount of tubes present.M. balthica shows a linear relation between the maximum size of particles which can be inhaled and animal length. In Kiel Bay, particles>0.5 mm are out of the range of this species. In summer, the potential feeding area (PFA) of aP. elegans population at one station in Kiel Bay was 1.8 times the available surface area. The PFA of three different populations ofM. balthica in Kiel Bay exceeded the available surface area by factors of 2.6, 2.7, and 3.2. These findings indicate strong intra- and interspecific competition for food. Additionally, the feeding of both species may strongly affect the recruitment of benthic species via pelagic larvae. Qinzhou Bay, the biggest bay in Guangxi Province, is very species-rich and is developing a robust marine economy. In recent years, as human impact has increased, problems associated with the environment have become more complicated. Measuring zooplankton diversity and abundance is a way to monitor environmental conditions. According to the data from four ecological surveys of the zooplankton in Qinzhou Bay during 2008 and 2009, a total of 134 species of zooplankton were identified, including 52 Copepoda species, 27 Medusa species, 14 Planktonic larvae, 9 Chaetognatha species, 8 Pteropoda species, 5 Amphipoda species, 4 Cladocera species, 4 Ostracoda species, 3 Thaliacea species, 2 Appendiculata species, 2 Sergestdae species, 2 Protlsta species, 1 Rotiera species and 1 Cumacea species. The fauna was clearly characterized as tropical population. The total species number was highest in autumn, followed by spring, winter and summer. Zooplankton species diversity in Qinzhou Bay has increased compared with the results obtained in 1983–1985 (83 species). However, compared with other bays, the number of zooplankton species in Qinzhou Bay is close to Daya Bay (128), higher than in Zhilin Bay (60), Jiaozhou Bay (81) and Luoyuan Bay (70), and far lower than in the north South Sea (709). We adopted the dominant index Y > 0.02 as the distinguishing standard of dominant species. The number of dominant species in spring, summer, autumn and winter were six, nine, eight and five. There was only one common dominant species (Penilia avirostris) appeared in different seasons, For summer and autumn, the shared dominant species numbered about four. Between other seasons, the shared dominant species varied between two and three. The number of uniquely dominant species was four in summer, three in autumn and one in both spring and winter. The dominant species in different seasons have some overlaps and some differences. The average biomass of zooplankton was 378 mg/m3 at all times of year. The average biomass was largest in autumn, followed by winter, and was the least in spring and summer. The average density of zooplankton for the entire year was 805.11 ind/m3. The average density was largest in summer, followed by winter, and was least in autumn and spring. Copepoda and Planktonic larvae were the major components of zooplankton in spring and summer at Qinzhou Bay, with the other species’ densities under 10%. In autumn, Copepoda, Planktonic larvae and Chaetognatha were the major components of the biomass, and in winter, the major species were Copepoda and Cladocera, with the others species’ density under 10%. The average value of the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H′) was 3.84 and the evenness index (J′) was 0.77. The zooplankton diversity index and community evenness overall were good and the community organization had a complete and stable state, but the status of the community was relatively weak. The relationship between biomass/density of zooplankton and environmental factors is remarkable. Biomass and density are positively correlated with temperature and nutrient concentration, and are negatively correlated with salinity.  相似文献

Rhinogobius candidianus is a freshwater goby distributed in north, northwest, west, and south Taiwan, but this species has been introduced to east Taiwan and became dominant. To investigate its native population genetic diversity and structure and evaluate the sources and diversity of translocated populations, the mitochondrial DNA control region and cytochrome b gene (1981 bp) from 220 specimens were analyzed. These results indicated that (1) the east populations originated from two sources in west Taiwan; (2) translocated populations exist in east Taiwan and south Taiwan; (3) many populations have likely been moved secondarily by human intervention; (4) the effective size of the populations had declined greatly; (5) within the native populations, the ancestral populations colonized Taiwan during the land bridge phase in the Pleistocene through north Taiwan; (6) the landform changes in Taiwan shaped the population structure; and (7) the landforms of the coastline during glaciation also shaped the native range. The low‐level genetic diversity, high population differentiation, and population decline greatly suggest the need for resource management and conservation interventions. Four clades (αδ) should be managed as four distinct evolutionarily significant units, while the translocated populations should be managed as separate management units. Moreover, the translocated populations in east Taiwan should be evaluated and monitored carefully.  相似文献

Green sturgeon, Acipenser medirostris, are the most marine-oriented of North American sturgeons. However, their estuarine/marine distribution and the seasonality of estuarine use are largely unknown. We used acoustic telemetry to document the timing of green sturgeon use of Washington estuaries. In the summers of 2003 and 2004, uniquely coded acoustic transmitters were surgically implanted in green sturgeon captured using commercial gillnets. All sturgeon tagged were greater than 1.2 m total length. They were caught, tagged, and released in both Willapa Bay (n = 49) and Columbia River (n = 11) estuaries. We deployed an array of four fixed- site acoustic receivers in Willapa Bay to detect the estuarine entry and exit of these and any of over 100 additional green sturgeon tagged in other systems during 2003 and 2004. Green sturgeon occurred in Willapa Bay in summer when estuarine water temperatures exceeded coastal water temperatures by at least 2°C. They exhibited rapid and extensive intra- and inter- estuary movements and green sturgeon from all known spawning populations were detected in Willapa Bay. We hypothesize that green sturgeon optimize their growth potential in summer by foraging in the relatively warm, saline waters of Willapa Bay and we caution that altering the quality of estuarine habitats could negatively affect this species throughout its range.  相似文献

The ecosystem engineer onuphid polychaete Diopatra biscayensis has a continuous population in the Bay of Biscay from the Cantabria coast in Spain to southern Brittany in France. A group of disjunct populations also are found in the English Channel, separated from the Biscay population by more than 400 coastal kilometers. It remains unclear whether D. biscayensis is native to the Bay of Biscay; it is also debated whether the disjunct populations in the English Channel are relics of a formerly continuous population, or the product of recent introductions through aquaculture. Here, we use climate hindcasts to explore hypotheses about the D. biscayensis historical distribution in Europe. If D. biscayensis is native, its range would have been restricted to southern Iberia and the Mediterranean during the Last Glacial Maximum (21,000 BP). However, the species is completely absent from both regions today, further supporting its interpretation as a non‐native species. If it was historically present in Europe, the climate hindcasts are congruent with range contraction in the Last Glacial Maximum (21,000 BP), expansion in the Mid‐Holocene Warm Period (6000 BP), and contraction again in the past 1000 years (850–1850), prior to the first reports of D. biscayensis on the Spanish and French Atlantic coasts. However, the simulations do not support there being climatic refugia along the English Channel coast that would account for the existence of relic populations. Taken together, the evidence suggests that D. biscayensis has been introduced to the Bay of Biscay, and that disjunct populations in the English Channel are the result of recent transport through human activities, perhaps aquaculture.  相似文献

This mark-recapture study of starry smooth-hound Mustelus asterias tagged during the summer months near the Dutch coast demonstrates a large-scale spatial sex differentiation in their circannual migration patterns and small-scale spatial sex differentiation during summer. Overwintering occurs in the North Sea, English Channel and Bay of Biscay, with significantly more males in the Northern North Sea and more females in the Bay of Biscay. During summer, sheltered sea arms off the Dutch coast were almost exclusively used by adult females. In subsequent summers post-release, both sexes were mostly confined to the Southern North Sea, suggesting philopatry.  相似文献

As a prevalent species complex in temperate estuaries and salt marshes of the Northern Hemisphere, populations of Eurytemora affinis that inhabit these environments must be adapted to salinity fluctuations. Some populations have invaded freshwater environments. In this work, we focus on the combined effects of temperature and salinity fluctuations on mortality rates and development time of the first naupliar stages under starvation. Two temperatures (10 and 15 °C) and eight salinities, ranging from 0 to 35 psu are investigated. We show (i) that among all experimental conditions the optimal temperature and salinity for naupliar survival and development are 15 psu and 15 °C, and (ii) that only the most extreme salinities (i.e. 0 and 35 psu) have a negative effect on naupliar survival. Nauplii develop faster and reach a higher developmental stage at 15 than at 10 °C, independent of salinity. The relevance of this metabolic adaptive pattern is discussed in the general framework of in situ behavior, tidal forcing and biogeographic variability, as well as the potential sources of the observed individual variability.  相似文献

The egg production of the copepod Acartia bifilosa was measured and related to environmental variables and food availability in two estuaries located in the same biogeographic region (Bay of Biscay) but showing very strong differences in abiotic and biotic features: the Gironde estuary (France) and the estuary of Mundaka (Spain). The study was conducted during the spring-summer-autumn period of 1994. Food availability was evaluated by analysing the chlorophyll a (Chl a), the particulate organic carbon (POC) and the easily extractable macromolecular compounds such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids of the seston. The egg production of copepods was estimated from field incubations with natural water, and phytoplankton feeding of adult females was estimated by means of the gut fluorescence method. The nutritional environment of the Gironde was characterised by high amounts of suspended particulate matter (SPM) with low food value, emphasising the mainly detrital origin of the organic matter (OM). In Mundaka, the higher contribution of phytoplankton to the seston led to marked increases in particulate food value accounting for up to 35% of organic matter. The weight-specific egg production was found to be sharply higher in Mundaka (ranging from 0.2 to 0.63×10−3 day−1) than in the Gironde (ranging from 0 to 0.13×10−3 day−1), but the seasonal trend of variations was similar, the highest weight-specific egg production rates occurring in early summer and the lowest in autumn in both estuaries. Egg production was not correlated linearly with temperature since maximal egg production occurred at intermediate temperatures. In Mundaka, the egg production showed a significant positive correlation with the chlorophyll and the Chl/SPM and the POC/SPM ratios. This coupled with higher values of algal food availability (Chl a/SPM: 10 to 1870 μg g−1) and gut fluorescence (between 0.12 and 0.38 ng Chl a Eq ind−1) indicate that a herbivorous diet could cover the energy requirements of A. bifilosa and support egg production. In the Gironde, the algal food availability and the gut fluorescence were lower (Chl a/SPM: 10 to 80 μg g−1; GF: 0.09 and 0.25 ng Chl a Eq ind−1), and the egg production showed significant positive correlation with the particulate food value, suggesting that other sources of carbon rather than phytoplankton were responsible for the observed changes in egg production. Results indicate that the particular seston properties of each system may be responsible for the noticeable differences in A. bifilosa fertility among estuaries.  相似文献

On the basis of distribution maps showing the first pollen occurrences in the Holocene of the well-known climate indicators Hedera, Ilex and Viscum as well as data for Corylus, a series of maps have been prepared that show summer and winter isotherms at various time intervals during the Holocene. From these maps climate curves for Amsterdam, the Netherlands have been set out. These were compared with curves for the Eemian at the same site. In both of these warm periods there is evidence for increased seasonality in the early phases which were relatively continental. Changes in insolation could account for such differences. Summer optima occurred earlier than winter optima. Changes in land-sea distribution are important, especially with regard to the patterns in winter climate. During the latter half of the Eemian, the climate was distinctly more oceanic than in the Holocene. Early in the Holocene, an influx of warm ocean water resulted in higher winter temperatures in the Gulf of Biscay, the Irish Sea, and areas east of Skagerrak-Kattegat. Temperature decline after the climatic optimum was greatest in the north, i.e. at 60°N, where a depression in the order of 2°C in summer and 2–3°C in winter occurred. Temperature decline was less farther south, i.e. at ca. 50°N, where a distinct west-east gradient in temperature change can be observed.  相似文献

The responses of the burrowing bivalves Macoma balthica and Cerastoderma edule to chemical cues emitted by feeding shore crabs Carcinus maenas were investigated. M. balthica held in the laboratory and exposed to chemical signals in effluent water discharging from tanks containing C. maenas fed 20 M. balthica day− 1 reacted by increasing their burial depths from approximately 30 mm to depths of > 60 mm, over a period of several days. When the signal was removed the bivalves gradually returned to their original depth over 5 days. C. edule similarly exposed to effluent from crabs feeding on conspecifics showed no response. In an attempt to identify the signal inducing this burrowing response, M. balthica were exposed to a variety of chemical signals. Crabs fed M. balthica elicited the strongest response, followed by crabs fed C. edule. There were also small responses to effluent from crabs fed on fish, crabs previously fed on M. balthica and to crab faeces, but no responses to starved crabs, crushed M. balthica, or controls. We conclude that increased burrowing depth of M. balthica is induced by some as yet unidentified chemical cue produced by feeding crabs and is strongest when the crabs were fed on M. balthica. Unexpectedly, neither the presence of crabs themselves, nor of damaged conspecifics, was effective in eliciting a burrowing response. The mortality rates of M. balthica and C. edule selected by crabs when burrowed at normal depths and after exposure to effluent from feeding crabs were different. Crabs selected 1.5 times more C. edule than M. balthica when both species were burrowed at their normal depths, but 15 times more after the tanks had been exposed to effluent from feeding crabs for 5 days. The burrowing response of M. balthica thus appears to reduce mortality significantly by displacing predation pressure on to the more accessible C. edule.  相似文献

Seasonal patterns of changes in length and weight during their second year of life were studied in two intertidal populations of the tellinid bivalve Macoma balthica (L.), viz. in The Netherlands (Wadden Sea) and in France (Seine estuary). The Wadden Sea population showed a single and short annual period of growth in spring (March through June), followed by a long annual period of nearly stagnant length growth and loss of weight of the soft parts. The Seine population started to grow earlier in the year (February), likewise retarded growth in summer, but restarted in autumn, thus showing a dual annual growing season with periods of rapid gain of length and weight both during spring and in October.The timing and the presence and absence of a second annual growing season are discussed in relation to temperature and feeding conditions in the various habitats.  相似文献

The population biology of the American immigrant triclad Dugesia tigrina was investigated in two British eutrophic lakes: Colemere, England, harbours an asexually reproducing population and Llyn Coron, North Wales, a population that reproduces both sexually and asexually. Monthly samples of triclads were taken from the undersides of stones in both lakes, and from ceramic tiles and plastic trays in Colemere and Llyn Coron, respectively, over two years. In both populations, body size-structure decreased slightly over winter, with an absence of very large and very small animals. Individual growth occurred in spring, and over summer the proportion of large and small individuals declined and increased, respectively. During September to November, size-structure was fairly stable. Increases in the size structure of the populations were associated with higher temperatures and an increased food supply; stability in size structure during the autumnal post-reproductive period, when temperatures were favourable for growth, to the occurrence of intraspecific competition for food; and decreases in size structure to lower temperatures during the winter. In both populations the density of triclads increased in summer to a peak in autumn, thereafter declining to a nadir in spring. The numerical peak in autumn was due to recruitment from reproduction, and the subsequent decline to deaths following the occurrence of intraspecific competition for food in late autumn, some invertebrate predation and winter mortality. Asexual reproduction (fission) started in June and finished during August in both populations. Laboratory experiments indicated that the occurrence and rate of fission is influenced by temperature and the amount of available food. The critical temperature for the initiation and cessation of fission lay between 14 and 16 °C in laboratory studies, and in the field fissioning started as temperatures approached 15 °C. In Llyn Coron, cocoon deposition commenced in June, peaked in July with only a very few produced in August. Triclads collected from the field outside these months could not be induced to lay cocoons in the laboratory. Laboratory experiments showed that cocoons were deposited at temperatures of 17.5, 20, and 25 °C, but not at 12.5 °C. Thus, in the field, cocoon production started when temperatures approached 15 °C in June, but had ceased whilst temperatures were still in excess of 15 °C in late August. Termination of cocoon dsposition is associated with the disappearance of large triclads in excess of 20 mm2, below which animals are not sexually mature; disappearance of large animals was due to fissioning, death after sexual reproduction, and probably shrinkage due to severe intraspecific competition for food. Laboratory experiments indicated that the Colemere population had, potentially, greater fission production than the Llyn Coron population. Despite this, the numerical size of the Colemere and Llyn Coron populations increased seven-fold and eleven-fold, respectively, over the reproductive period. Whether or not this difference in reproductive potential between the populations will continue is speculative; the introduction of D. tigrina to Llyn Coron is relatively recent and the population may still be expanding to reach the carrying capacity of the habitat. The resting metabolic rate (RMR) of seasonally-acclimated Mabuya brevicollis of various body masses was determined at 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 °C, using open-flow respirometry. RMR (ml g−1 h−1) decreased with increasing mass at each temperature. RMRs increaProd. Type: FTPsed as temperature increased. The highest and lowest Q10 values were obtained for the temperature ranges 20–25 °C and 30–35 °C for the summer-acclimated lizards. The exponent of mass “b” in the metabolism-body mass relation ranged from 0.41 to 0.61. b values were lower in the autumn and winter-acclimated lizards than in spring and summer-acclimated lizards. Seasonal acclimation effects were evident at all temperatures (20–40 °C) for M. brevicollis. Winter-acclimated skinks had the lowest metabolic rates at different temperatures. The pattern of acclimation exhibited by M. brevicollis may represent a useful adaptation for lizards inhabiting subtropical deserts to promote activity during their active seasons.  相似文献

Polymorphism at five microsatellite loci were screened to determine the genetic variability and the temporal stability of population structure in natural populations of European hake (Merluccius merluccius, L.) within the Bay of Biscay. In addition, the control region (900 bp) and two protein coding genes (ATPase, subunits 6 and 8, 842 bp and a partial sequence of the ND1, 800 bp) of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were sequenced from geographically distant populations from the extremes of the species range. One hundred individuals from either side of a supposed stock boundary within the bay were collected in autumn 1997. This sampling strategy was repeated during hake spawning seasons in late spring of 1998 and 1999. Low levels of population subdivision were found between putative populations within years. Similarly, low levels of differentiation were found between autumn 1997 northern samples and spring 1998 southern samples which were collected 7 months later on spawning grounds. These results are discussed in relation to ecological, behavioural and oceanographic information. Sampling effects, which may influence these results, are also discussed. Theta (theta) estimates were significantly different from zero in every other pairwise comparison between geographical areas (north and south of the Bay of Biscay) and between years within the same area (P<0.05). Hierarchical analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) does not confirm the temporal persistence of population structure. These results are discussed in relation to variance in reproductive success, and temporal spawning patterns, which may exist within the bay. mtDNA variability was very low between geographically distant samples from Norway and the Mediterranean Sea with only 10 variable sites found in a total of 2542 bp of mtDNA, these differences being exclusively in the D-loop.  相似文献
