Structural refuges within which prey can escape from predators can be an important limiting resource for the prey. In a manner that resembles the childhood game of musical chairs, many prey species rapidly retreat to shared, unguarded refuges whenever a predator threatens, and only when refuges are relatively abundant do all prey individuals actually escape. The key feature of this process is that the per capita prey mortality rate depends on the ratio of prey individuals to refuges. We introduce a new class of mortality functions with this feature and then demonstrate statistically that they describe field mortality data from a well-studied coral reef fish species, the Caribbean bridled goby Coryphopterus glaucofraenum, substantially better than do several mortality functions of more conventional form. J. F. Samhouri and R. R. Vance contributed equally to this work.  相似文献

Many damselfishes exclude other grazers from their territories and “farm” filamentous algae within their territories. In this study the indirect effect of damselfish territories on faunal composition and abundance of internal bioeroders of dead Acropora formosa (Dana, 1846) was investigated in territories of two damselfish species, Stegastes nigricans (Lacepède, 1802) and Plectroglyphidodon lacrymatus (Quoy and Gaimard, 1825). S. nigricans tends to be more protective and defend their territories more aggressively than P. lacrymatus. Newly killed branches of A. formosa were placed inside and outside damselfish territories, for 1 or 2 years, at a coral reef near Zanzibar, Tanzania. As predicted, the coral branches became covered with more filamentous algae in the S. nigricans territories than in the controls, with intermediate levels in the P. lacrymatus territories. Among the internal bioeroding fauna, polychaetes were by far the most common group. In total, there were significantly more borers in the first year than the second, which was mainly due to a high abundance of sabellids. Furthermore, sabellids were significantly more abundant in control areas and in the P. lacrymatus territories compared to the S. nigricans territories. However, many other genera showed the opposite pattern, with more polychaetes in the fish territories compared to the controls. There was also a clear difference in assemblage structure between S. nigricans territories and controls. Thus, we found strong effects of whether a piece of coral was placed inside or outside a damselfish territory on the abundance of many of the bioeroding taxa. We discuss multiple reasons for these indirect effects of the territories, including that deposit feeding bioeroders may benefit from the dense algal turf found inside the territories whereas suspension feeding bioeroders may benefit from substrate with less filamentous algae found outside territories. Considering our results in the context of the large areas of coral reefs that typically are defended as territories by damselfishes, these fish are likely to have a considerable impact on the boring community of a coral reef.  相似文献

The acute effects of zinc (Zn) were evaluated in the symbiont-bearing foraminifer Amphistegina lessonii from the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (Northeastern Brazil). Foraminifers were acutely (48 h) exposed to dissolved Zn concentrations ranging from 9.5 to 93.4 μg Zn/l. Endpoints analyzed included mortality, visual alterations (white spots and dark-brown areas in the test), oxidative stress biomarkers (reactive oxygen species generation, lipid peroxidation and total superoxide dismutase activity), and concentration of metallothionein-like proteins in whole individuals after Zn exposure. No significant mortality was observed during the 48-h exposure period to waterborne Zn. However, a significant percentage of individuals showed visual alterations (white spots and/or dark-brown areas in the test) after 24 and 48 h of Zn exposure. In fact, a significant positive correlation between this endpoint and dissolved Zn concentrations was observed for both times of exposure. Based on this endpoint, the 24-h and 48-h EC50 values and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals for total measured Zn concentrations were calculated as 112.2 (86.5 - 199.5) and 43.6 (34.9 - 57.3) μg Zn/l, respectively. Based on the dissolved Zn concentrations, they were 100.7 (75.3 - 175.9) and 38.2 (29.7 - 49.4) μg Zn/l, respectively. Therefore, a significant increase in Zn toxicity was observed with increasing time of exposure. After 48 h of Zn exposure, whole body antioxidant capacity was lower in normal-appearing individuals than in those at the initial stage of bleaching. Increases in lipid peroxidation, metallothionein-like protein concentration and total SOD activity was observed at a greater extent in pale/partly-bleached individuals associated with an increased Zn toxicity measured as visual alterations. These findings suggest that an activation of some components of the antioxidant system occurred in A. lessonii to counteract the oxidative stress induced by Zn exposure, and consequently avoid a possible complete loss of the symbiont.  相似文献

The photosynthetic performance, pigmentation and response to nutrient enrichment of a Dictyota community were studied over a 32 m depth gradient on Conch Reef, Florida Keys, USA. Dictyota spp. was the dominant space occupier on Conch Reef. During summer months from 1994 to 2001, mean percent cover was 43% at 7 and 21 m depths. Percent cover of Dictyota spp. was markedly lower at 32 m relative to shallower sites. The metabolism of Dictyota menstrualis and Dictyota pulchella were negatively impacted by attenuation of irradiance with increased depth such that ETRmax and P/R ratio decreased by 85% and 47%, respectively in samples from 7 to 32 m. Decreased cover of Dicytota spp. at 32 m relative to shallower sites may be the result of the inability of this species complex to acclimate to low irradiance levels as indicated by a lack of change in α and photosynthetic pigment content with increased depth. The response of D. menstrualis populations on Conch Reef to nutrient enrichment was variable. During August 2000, a natural enrichment experiment was conducted as D. menstrualis photosynthetic performance was surveyed both during and for days after a period of cool, nutrient-rich internal tidal bores bathed the 21 m site. No changes in in situ photosynthetic performance were observed either during or for 2 to 4 days after this natural event suggesting no nutrient limitation. In August 2001, a manipulative nutrient enrichment experiment was conducted with D. menstrualis from 7, 21 and 32 m. Increases in ΦII were found in individuals exposed to nutrient enrichment from all depths, indicating at that time D. menstrualis was nutrient-limited on Conch Reef. Variation in the physiological response to nutrient enrichment may be the result of the frequency of internal tidal bores on Conch Reef in the months prior to our experiments. Variation in the responses by Dictyota spp. to irradiance and nutrient enrichment suggests that long-term monitoring over relevant temporal and spatial scales is necessary to accurately characterize limits on productivity and spread of this weedy species assemblage.  相似文献

In recent years there has been growing interest in analyzing the geographical variations between populations of different Phlebotomus spp. by comparing the sequences of various genes. However, little is known about the genetic structure of Phlebotomus ariasi. In this study, we were able to sequence a fragment of the mitochondrial Cyt b gene in 133 sandflies morphologically identified as P. ariasi and proceeding from a wide geographical range covering 35 locations in 11 different regions from five countries. The intra-specific diversity of P. ariasi is high, with 45 haplotypes differing from each other by one to 26 bases and they are distributed in two mitochondrial lineages, one limited geographically to Algeria and the other widely dispersed across Mediterranean countries. The Algerian lineage is characterized by having 13 fixed polymorphisms and is made up of one sole haplotype. The European/Moroccan P. ariasi lineage is characterized by being made up of a great diversity of haplotypes (44) which display some geographical structuring. This could be one of the multiple factors involved in the epidemiological heterogeneity of the foci of leishmaniasis. Phlebotomus chadlii is the sister group of European/Moroccan P. ariasi. The separation of the Algerian haplotype, H45, from the rest of the specimens, European/Moroccan P. ariasi and P. chadlii, is well supported by the bootstrap analysis.  相似文献

We report an experiment designed to test for overpopulation in an Iceland scallop, Chlamys islandica (O.F. Müller), slow-growing bed. Scallops were installed in pearl nets at the site of the scallop bed and in a nearby unpopulated site, near the bottom and far from the bottom. With this set-up, all groups, except that one near the bottom inside the bed, were free from potential overpopulation effects. In addition, there were two stocking densities to test for containment effects.Shell growth was higher at 2.0 m above the bottom, outside the scallop bed, than at the three other site and height combinations, which were not significantly different from each other. There was a borderline effect of site on soft tissue growth, which was probably slower at the donor site. We conclude that there was no evidence of overpopulation in the scallop bed. On both sites, soft tissue growth was slowest near the bottom, irrespective of group size, intermediate at 2.0 m height, high population density, and fastest at 2.0 m height, low population density. Survivorship was lower near the bottom, but was independent of site and of group size. Available data showed no sustained vertical patterns in phytoplankton concentration in the water column. These results suggest that food depletion occurred in the pearl nets, but that density-independent factors dominated density-dependent factors in the pearl nets near the bottom. Likely explanations involve the interaction between containment effects and current speed variations in the benthic boundary layer. Survivorship decreased with fluctuating asymmetry of the ears of the shells. Fluctuating asymmetry, therefore, may provide a means of including individual effects in growth experiments and forecasting the ability of spat to resist density-independent mortality agents.  相似文献

The vast majority of parasites exhibit an aggregated frequency distribution within their host population, such that most hosts have few or no parasites while only a minority of hosts are heavily infected. One exception to this rule is the trophically transmitted parasite Pterygodermatites peromysci of the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus), which is randomly distributed within its host population. Here, we ask: what are the factors generating the random distribution of parasites in this system when the majority of macroparasites exhibit non-random patterns? We hypothesise that tight density-dependent processes constrain parasite establishment and survival, preventing the build-up of parasites within individual hosts, and preclude aggregation within the host population. We first conducted primary infections in a laboratory experiment using white-footed mice to test for density-dependent parasite establishment and survival of adult worms. Secondary or challenge infection experiments were then conducted to investigate underlying mechanisms, including intra-specific competition and host-mediated restrictions (i.e. acquired immunity). The results of our experimental infections show a dose-dependent constraint on within-host-parasite establishment, such that the proportion of mice infected rose initially with exposure, and then dropped off at the highest dose. Additional evidence of density-dependent competition comes from the decrease in worm length with increasing levels of exposure. In the challenge infection experiment, previous exposure to parasites resulted in a lower prevalence and intensity of infection compared with primary infection of naïve mice; the magnitude of this effect was also density-dependent. Host immune response (IgG levels) increased with the level of exposure, but decreased with the number of worms established. Our results suggest that strong intra-specific competition and acquired host immunity operate in a density-dependent manner to constrain parasite establishment, driving down aggregation and ultimately accounting for the observed random distribution of parasites.  相似文献

Eight phenolic compounds, including (−)-epicatechin (1) and seven proanthocyanidins (2-8), were obtained from the butanol extract of Parabarium huaitingii (PHB). Their chemical structures were identified based on analyses of mass spectra (MS), NMR, CD spectra, and partial acid catalyzed thiolytic degradation. The observation made by laser scanning confocal microscope found a significant increase of the concentration of intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) in single myocytes when the PHB was added, while compounds 1 and 3 had the same physiological effect. Further investigations showed PHB had a dose-dependent positive inotropic effect on isolated right atria and papillary muscle of left ventricle of the rat, while having no significant influence on the spontaneous beating rate of the isolated right atria. The inotropic effect of PHB could be greatly abolished by pretreating the myocardium in Ca2+-free solution. These findings indicated that PHB could significantly increase [Ca2+]i in myocytes, which was greatly dependent on the influx of extracellular Ca2+. Compounds 1 and 3 might be the effective ingredients of the inotropic effect of PHB. In addition, PHB could also significantly decrease the infarct size of the heart on acute myocardial infarction (AMI) model rats, which suggested its myocardial protective effect on ischemic myocardium. The positive inotropic effect of PHB, together with its myocardial protective effect on AMI, suggested that PHB had a promising potential for the prevention and treatment of heart failure, especially the one that was caused by AMI.  相似文献

Amaranthus retroflexus L. and Chenopodium glaucum L. are two widely distributed destructive weeds. Their strong adaptability and massive seed production make them the hardest weeds to deal with. This present study intended to investigate the effect of leachate from Eupatorium adenophorum on the growth of these weeds and explore the potential to develop an environmental friendly strategy to use the leachate to control the weeds. Seeds of A. retroflexus L. and C. glaucum L. were soaked in solutions containing 0%, 0.6%, 1.25%, 2.5%, and 5% leachate from E. adenophorum leaves. A. retroflexus and C. glaucum seedlings grown in pots were sprayed with leachate solutions in the same concentration range. The effects of these leachate solutions on membrane permeability and germination of seeds, and growth and physiological characteristics of the seedlings were investigated. The highest concentration of leachate (5%) caused significant damage to the cell membrane of seeds of both weed species, whereas lower concentrations (0.6%) promoted repair of the membrane system, as reflected by higher and lower than control in relative conductivity (RC), respectively. Different concentrations of leachate showed distinct allelopathic inhibitory effects on the two weed species; lower concentrations showed weak inhibitory or even positive effects, whereas higher concentrations showed stronger inhibitory effects. Higher concentrations of leachate (2.5% and 5%) delayed germination and significantly decreased the emergence rate of the seeds, survival rate, and dry matter accumulation of the seedlings. When treated by 5% leachate, the emergence date of A. retroflexus was delayed by 3.6 d, emergence rate of the seeds and survival rate was 69.1% and 70.6% of the control, respectively, seedling dry matter was 48.6% less than the control; In the case of C. glaucum, the emergence date was delayed by 2.7 d, emergence rate of the seeds and survival rate was 45.1% and 58.6% of the control, respectively, seedling dry matter was 44.7% less than the control. There were significant interactions among the different concentrations of leachate and the length of treatment period with respect to activities of antioxidant enzymes, malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, and chlorophyll contents. Seedlings treated with 0.6%, 1.25%, or 2.5% leachate solution for 24–72 h showed increased superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) activities. When seedlings were treated with leachate solutions for 96 h, antioxidant enzyme activities and chlorophyll content decreased in A. retroflexus, but only CAT activity decreased in C. glaucum. When seedlings of the two weed species were treated with 5% leachate solution, CAT activity and chlorophyll content decreased and MDA content gradually increased with longer treatment times (from 24 to 96 h). The two weed species showed different allelopathic responses to E. adenophorum; A. retroflexus was more sensitive than C. glaucum. Based on the investigation, it could be speculated that the delayed germination and low germination rate of the weeds after treatment by leachate could be due to the fact that leachate damaged the membrane system of the seeds. By delaying germination, lowering the germination rate of the weeds and inhibiting seedling growth, leachate from E. adenophorum could provide an effective way of controlling the weeds.  相似文献

We have developed a simple, mild extraction procedure using methanol which, when coupled with HPLC analysis and diode array detection (DAD), can be used to quantify the major photopigments found in cultured Symbiodinium spp. Extracts were prepared by suspending, fresh or frozen (− 70 °C), wet cell pellets in methanol and sonicating or not sonicating the cell suspensions before soaking the cells for 2 h in an ice bath. To assist the soaking process, cell suspensions were vortex mixed at 30 min intervals. After soaking, 0.5 M ammonium acetate buffer was added (1 part buffer to 9 parts methanol) before suspensions were stored over night at − 20 °C. Greater than 92% the recoverable pigment was obtained in the initial extraction of the four major photopigments, chlorophyll c, peridinin, diadinoxanthin, and chlorophyll a. Neither sonication nor freezing substantially increased the recovery of photopigments extracted with methanol. Extraction by other commonly used solvents such as acetone or acetone:water with or without freezing and sonication were less effective.  相似文献

Drimys winteri (Winteraceae) is a tree with medicinal properties native to Chile. Its bark contains polygodial and drimenol in unknown quantities, with antimicrobial and antinociceptive activity. The purpose of the present study was to quantify polygodial and drimenol concentrations in leaves of five populations of D. winteri and one of Drimys andina from different regions of Chile, by GC analysis of the hexane extract. The concentration of these compounds was also determined in the bark of one of the D. winteri populations. In dried leaves mean concentrations of 0.99% for polygodial and 0.011% for drimenol could be observed, both differing significantly among the studied populations. It is concluded that polygodial and drimenol are present in the leaves and the bark of D. winteri and in D. andina leaves, this being the first report of the presence of these compounds in the latter species.  相似文献

Plant architecture and phenotypic plasticity under natural conditions remain little known for many rhizomatous species. This study evaluates, in situ, the plastic responses of Alstroemeria aurea plants from three Patagonian populations to flower or flowering-shoot removal. The size and architecture of treated and untreated plants were assessed. Nutrient contents (N, P and K) were evaluated for rhizomes and roots developed in two successive years. Those plants that were deprived of their inflorescences developed, on average, a heavier rhizome than both control plants and plants from which flowering shoots had been removed. Neither of the two treatments applied altered the number of metamers or the branching pattern of the rhizomes. The contents of N, P and K were higher in rhizomes than in roots. In summer, nutrients were more concentrated in inflorescences and the new rhizome segment than in the rhizome segment developed in the previous year. The idea that fruiting failure in A. aurea promotes resource re-assignment from aerial shoots to rhizomes without altering the architecture of plants is supported. The development of the underground portion of aerial shoots in late summer-autumn allows A. aurea plants to take full advantage of short growth periods, but would impose a limit to plasticity.  相似文献

We documented the microscopic morphology of tissue healing in Montipora capitata. Fragments from two healthy coral colonies were traumatized by scraping tissue and skeleton and monitored in flow-through seawater tables every 2-4 days for 40 days for gross and cellular changes. Grossly, corals appeared healed and repigmented by Day 40. Histologically, traumatized issues were undistinguishable from intact untraumatized tissues by Day 12. We suspect that the calicoblastic epidermis of basal body wall is pluripotential and can develop into surface epidermis when needed.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of septa and septum-associated septal pore caps are important taxonomic markers in the Agaricomycotina (Basidiomycota, Fungi). The septal pore caps covering the typical basidiomycetous dolipore septum are divided into three main phenotypically recognized morphotypes: vesicular-tubular (including the vesicular, sacculate, tubular, ampulliform, and globular morphotypes), imperforate, and perforate. Until recently, the septal pore cap-type reflected the higher-order relationships within the Agaricomycotina. However, the new classification of Fungi resulted in many changes including revision of existing and addition of new orders. Therefore, the septal pore cap ultrastructure of more than 325 species as reported in literature was related to this new classification. In addition, the septal pore cap ultrastructures of Rickenella fibula and Cantharellus formosus were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Both fungi have dolipore septa associated with perforate septal pore caps. These results combined with data from the literature show that the septal pore cap-type within orders of the Agaricomycotina is generally monomorphic, except for the Cantharellales and Hymenochaetales. It appears from the fungal phylogeny combined with the septal pore cap ultrastructure that the vesicular-tubular and the imperforate type both may have arisen from endoplasmic reticulum. Thereafter, the imperforate type eventually gave rise to the perforate septal pore cap-type.  相似文献
