Multivariate analyses of the diet relationships within fish assemblages resulted in the recognition of five major feeding guilds in shallow (0-9 m) rocky- and soft-bottom habitats on the Swedish west coast. The two habitats had similar guilds that could be broadly described as piscivores, decapod feeders, copepod feeders and amphipod and mollusc feeders. The last guild on the rocky bottom was more strictly one of amphipod feeders, whereas the last guild on soft bottoms consisted of infauna feeders (mainly polychaetes and bivalves). A comparison of the diet of the entire fish assemblages showed that amphipods and gastropods were more prevalent as prey taxa on rocky bottoms, whereas bivalves and teleosts were more common on soft bottoms. A large proportion (12 out of 27 species) of the fish species investigated was found in both habitats. These fish species generally seemed to rely on the same major prey groups in the two habitats, but also included prey taxa characteristic for the habitat in which they resided. Sea trout Salmo trutta , mackerel Scombrus scombrus , saithe Pollachius virens , whiting Merlangius merlangus and cod Gadus morhua were found to be the major piscivores in both the investigated habitats. Herring Clupea harengus and members of the family gobiidae were the most prevalent prey species for piscivores within the rocky- as well as the soft-bottom fish assemblage. A comparison of feeding modes suggested that the fish assemblage on rocky bottoms predominantly (60% of the food items) relied on food found in vegetation. On soft bottoms, the average distribution of food categories among fish species was 44% benthic, 35% pelagic and 21% vegetation-associated food items.  相似文献

Exploitation of groundfish off the U.S. Pacific coast reached maximum levels during the 1990s, resulting in severe declines in at least nine species of groundfish. From 1988 to 1990, we used the 2-man submersible Delta to make 42 dives and run replicate visual belt transects at six stations ranging from 67-360 m in depth at Heceta Bank on the outer continental shelf of Oregon. We identified four major habitats and associated benthic macroinvertebrate and groundfish assemblages: (1) shallow rock ridges and large boulders (< 100 m deep) dominated by basket stars, juvenile rockfishes, yelloweye rockfish, and lingcod; (2) mid-depth small boulder-cobbles (100-150 m) dominated by crinoids, brittle stars, rosethorn, pygmy/Puget sound, and canary rockfishes; (3) deep cobble (150-200 m) dominated by crinoids, brittle stars and various small rockfish species, and (4) deep mud slope (> 200 m) dominated by fragile urchins, sea cucumbers, shortspine thornyhead, and flatfishes. Although substantial interannual variation in groundfish abundance among seafloor types was evident in the 12 most abundant and/or commercially important fish taxa sampled, high variance resulted in statistically significant differences among years only in juvenile rockfishes. These data provide a baseline for future comparisons exploring long-term change this continental-shelf ecosystem.  相似文献

The offshore displacement of commercial bottom trawling has raised concerns about the impact of this destructive fishing practice on the deep seafloor, which is in general characterized by lower resilience than shallow water regions. This study focuses on the flanks of La Fonera (or Palamós) submarine canyon in the Northwestern Mediterranean, where an intensive bottom trawl fishery has been active during several decades in the 400–800 m depth range. To explore the degree of alteration of surface sediments (0–50 cm depth) caused by this industrial activity, fishing grounds and control (untrawled) sites were sampled along the canyon flanks with an interface multicorer. Sediment cores were analyzed to obtain vertical profiles of sediment grain-size, dry bulk density, organic carbon content and concentration of the radionuclide 210Pb. At control sites, surface sediments presented sedimentological characteristics typical of slope depositional systems, including a topmost unit of unconsolidated and bioturbated material overlying sediments progressively compacted with depth, with consistently high 210Pb inventories and exponential decaying profiles of 210Pb concentrations. Sediment accumulation rates at these untrawled sites ranged from 0.3 to 1.0 cm y−1. Sediment properties at most trawled sites departed from control sites and the sampled cores were characterized by denser sediments with lower 210Pb surface concentrations and inventories that indicate widespread erosion of recent sediments caused by trawling gears. Other alterations of the physical sediment properties, including thorough mixing or grain-size sorting, as well as organic carbon impoverishment, were also visible at trawled sites. This work contributes to the growing realization of the capacity of bottom trawling to alter the physical properties of surface sediments and affect the seafloor integrity over large spatial scales of the deep-sea.  相似文献

Density and biomass of fishes, from shallow rocky and soft bottom habitats on the Swedish west coast, showed large seasonal variation with low values in winter and spring and with peaks in June. Season was also the most important factor determining the fish assemblage structure. Within season, however, there was a clear separation in assemblage structure between rocky-and soft-bottom habitats. There were significantly higher total fish abundances and biomasses during night compared with day catches. On soft bottoms density and biomass of fishes decreased with increasing depth, but no such pattern was seen in rocky habitats indicating that the distribution of fishes was related to vegetation cover. Altogether, 53 fish species were recorded of which 30 were common to both habitats. Species richness was similar on rocky and soft bottoms. Of the 10 most abundant species found in rocky habitats four belonged to the Labridae and three to the Gadidae. The fish assemblage on soft bottoms were of a more mixed nature with representatives among the 10 dominants from six families (Clupeidae, Cottidae, Gadidae, Gobiidae, Labridae and Pleuronectidae). When ranking the 10 dominant fish species on rocky bottoms according to biomass c . 50% of the mass was Labridae, 19% Gadidae and 13% Cottidae. In soft bottom habitats, fish biomass was mainly distributed between six families. Pleuronectidae and Gadidae were dominant and each made up 25% of the biomass, whereas Labridae only contributed 4% of the fish mass. It is concluded that the fish assemblage in rocky habitats is dominated by permanent non-commercial species (63% of biomass), whereas soft bottoms mainly function as nurseries for juvenile fishes and as feeding grounds for seasonal migrants of commercial species (80% of biomass).  相似文献

The first in situ exploration of Aleutian Island coral habitat was completed in 2002 to determine the distribution of corals, to examine fine-scale associations between targeted fish species and corals, and to investigate the interaction between the areas’ diverse fisheries and coral habitat. Corals, mostly gorgonians and hydrocorals, were present on all 25 seafloor transects and at depths between 27 and 363 m, but were most abundant between 100 and 200 m depth. Mean coral abundance (1.23 colonies m−2) far exceeded that reported for other high-latitude ecosystems and high-density coral gardens (3.85 colonies m−2) were observed at seven locations. Slope and offshore pinnacle habitats characterized by exposed bedrock, boulders, and cobbles generally supported the highest abundances of coral and fish. Overall, 85% of the economically important fish species observed on transects were associated with corals and other emergent epifauna. Disturbance to the seafloor from bottom-contact fishing gear was evident on 88% of the transects, and approximately 39% of the total area of the seafloor observed had been disturbed. Since cold-water corals appear to be a ubiquitous feature of seafloor habitats in the Aleutian Islands, fisheries managers face clear challenges integrating coral conservation into an ecosystem approach to fisheries management.  相似文献

In spite of their ecological and economic importance, reef fishes from the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico are rarely studied, therefore precluding their management and conservation. In order to identify the set of habitat characteristics/environmental conditions that predict major shifts in fish assemblages in space and time, a stationary census (5′, φ = 5 m) was conducted on a semi‐monthly basis from 2006 to 2009 at patch reefs along the coast. Habitat configuration was gathered using 25 m long point‐intersect transects (data every 25 cm), recording all underlying coral species and substrate characteristics (rocks, sand, algal mats, rubble or dead corals). Recorded were 65 452 fishes grouped in 11 orders, 36 families, 65 genera and 89 species. Labridae (nine species), Pomacentridae (eight species) and Serranidae (seven species) were the most frequent families. Abundance is severely skewed among species; four species Thalassoma lucasanum, Chromis atrilobata, Apogon pacificus and Stegastes acapulcoensis comprise nearly 59% of the fish abundance, 11 species contribute 30%, whereas most of the species (75) can be considered as rare since they contribute <1% each to the total. Species richness and family‐level assemblage composition are similar to those recorded elsewhere in the eastern Pacific. Non‐parametric multivariate analysis of variance demonstrated that changes of diversity metrics might be associated with environmental differences on the scale of hundreds of meters to kilometers, as well as coupled with major changes on oceanographic variables throughout time, exerting meaningful changes on reef‐related fish assemblages.  相似文献

As human impacts and demands for ocean space increase (fisheries, aquaculture, marine reserves, renewable energy), identification of marine habitats hosting sensitive biological assemblages has become a priority. Epifaunal invertebrates, especially the structure-forming species, are an increasing conservation concern as many traditional (bottom-contact fishing) and novel (marine renewable energy) ocean uses have the potential to displace or otherwise impact these slow-growing organisms. The differences in mega-invertebrate species assemblages between high-relief rocks and low-relief sediments are well documented and likely hold for most marine environments. In anticipation of potential development of marine renewable energy faculties off Oregon and Washington (USA), a survey of the benthic invertebrate assemblages and habitats was conducted on the continental shelf of the Pacific Northwest, using video footage collected by ROV, to more finely characterize these assemblage–habitat associations. Four main associations were found: pure mud/sand dominated by sea whips and burrowing brittle stars; mixed mud–rock (which may be further divided based on size of mixed-in rocks) characterized by various taxa at small densities; consolidated rocks characterized by high diversity and density of sessile or motile mega-invertebrates; and rubble rocks showing less diversity and density than the consolidated rocks, possibly due to the disturbance generated by movement of the unconsolidated rocks. The results of this study will help classify and map the seafloor in a way that represents benthic habitats reflective of biological species assemblage distributions, rather than solely geological features, and support conservation and management planning.  相似文献

The red drums, Sciaenops ocellatus, are predatory marine fish from Atlantic American coast. They were introduced to Taiwan for aquaculture purpose in 1987 and have been reported in the wild along the southwest coast of Taiwan since 1998. Their current distribution is on the western coast of Taiwan and the Matsu Islands of Fujian Province where there are sand and mud bottoms. However, the discontinuous populations of Taiwan and Matsu indicated different sources of introduction. The facts that there are consecutive records of red drums for 7 years including every single month, at multiple localities, and the fish’s larger size all point to their survival in the wild. The mechanisms of their introductions are probably the escapes from net cages as well as the deliberate releases to improve fisheries and for religious activities. This paper documents for the first time a marine fish has invaded and established in coastal water off western Taiwan and the Indo-West Pacific. The ecological impact of red drums on the local fish community is still unknown and calls for further studies.  相似文献

Patterns of distribution of reef fishes were examined across three spatial scales and related to habitat traits along 25 km of the northern Portuguese coast. Response variables included the multivariate assemblage structure, the total number of taxa and individuals, and the abundance of single groups categorized according to their preference for the benthic, proximo-benthic or pelagic environment, feeding and reproductive behaviour. Habitat traits included topographic elements (small and large ‘drops’ like cracks and crevices) and the extent of dominant morpho-functional types of macroalgae (kelp, large foliose, small erect, turf-forming filamentous, and encrusting). All fish responses were characterized by the largest variance at the smallest scale (among transects tens m apart), followed by that among reefs (hundreds m to 1 km apart) and almost null variance among sites (some km apart). Small and large ‘drops’ of the substratum explained, respectively, considerable variation of assemblage structure and the total abundance of individuals, while the extent of bare rock influenced the richness of taxa and that of benthic fishes, fishes feeding on sessile invertebrates and fishes laying benthic eggs or having nesting behaviour. Combinations of abiotic and biotic structural attributes of reefs influenced proximo-benthic fishes, the predators of mobile animals and fishes releasing pelagic eggs. The here reported associations between patterns of distribution of reef fishes and habitat traits have implications for the design of future protection schemes suitable to guarantee the conservation of reef fish communities and of the processes responsible for their variation. Within the SLOSS (single-large vs. several-small) debate in the design of marine reserves, for example, effective protection to the studied reef fishes would be provided by a set of small reserves, rather than a single large which might be appropriate for fishes having wider home ranges.  相似文献

Spatial changes in species composition and structure of sublittoral soft-bottom polychaete assemblages along a transect parallel to the shoreline off the Barcelonès and Maresme regions on the Spanish Catalan coast (NW Mediterranean sea) are described. The transect (20 m mean depth) covers 30 km through an area affected by both water sewage discharges and river outflow. These effluents generate a spatial gradient of both silt and organic enrichment, according to the prevailing southerly currents in the zone. South of the effluents, eutrophized sediments supported a macrofaunal assemblage which was typical of polluted bottoms, characterized by the massive presence of Capitella capitata and Malacoceros fuliginosus, high abundance and biomass, low values of species richness, and a simplified trophic structure dominated by surface and subsurface-deposit feeders. North of the effluents, both the mud and organic matter content in sediment decreased drastically and the polychaete assemblages described were progressively less affected with distance. Thus, a clear change in species composition, as well as low values of abundance and biomass, increases in species richness, and a more complex trophic structure on the polychaete assemblages was observed north rather than south of the effluents.  相似文献

Aim  To test whether distributional patterns of Neotropical freshwater taxa fit the generalized tracks already postulated for terrestrial groups occurring in the Mexican Transition Zone.
Location  The study units comprised 17 hydrological basins located along the Pacific coast of the Americas from Mexico to Panama, and in the Gulf of Mexico from the Papaloapan to the Grijalva–Usumacinta basin.
Methods  Distributional data for 22 fish species, 34 crab species of the tribe Pseudothelphusini, and 22 strictly freshwater species of angiosperms were analysed. Parsimony analysis of endemicity is based on presence/absence data of these taxa and uses the computer programs Winclada and NONA.
Results  Three generalized tracks were obtained: (1) Mexican North Pacific, (2) Mexican Central Pacific, and (3) Southern Mexico–Guatemala. A node resulted at the intersection of the first two tracks, coinciding with the Neovolcanic Axis in central Mexico.
Main conclusions  Freshwater generalized tracks with an altitudinal distribution below 1000 m, mainly including fishes and angiosperms, are close to the Tropical Mesoamerican generalized track. Generalized tracks above 1000 m, including freshwater crabs, have a stronger affinity with the Mountain Mesoamerican track. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec represents a node for the Neotropical freshwater and terrestrial biota. These results seem to indicate that common geobiotic processes have induced these patterns.  相似文献

Benthic foraminiferal assemblages in 127 samples, collected at water depth, ranging between 15 and 184 m on the Southern Tuscany continental shelf off the Ombrone River were analysed. Statistical analyses (Cluster and Principal Component Analysis) performed on the 48 most abundant species (>5%) and sedimentological data led to the identification of three clusters related to the size of grain sediment (sand, silt or clay). Q-mode cluster analysis singled out six groups, corresponding to six distinct foraminiferal assemblages: a typical infralittoral assemblage (15-39 m) on sandy silt, clayey silt or silty clay, dominated by Ammonia and Elphidium species, with Eggerelloides scabrus, Rectuvigerina phlegeri and Valvulineria bradyana; a second assemblage (24-78.5 m) associated with vegetated environments or sandy bottoms (Elphidium crispum, Rosalina bradyi, Asterigerinata mamilla, Neoconorbina terquemi, and Tretomphalus concinnus); a third assemblage recognised between 30 and 90 m water depth and characterised by the dominance of the opportunistic species V. bradyana (related to silty bottoms), with Bulimina marginata, R. phlegeri, Ammonia inflata and Ammonia beccarii as other common taxa; an upper circalittoral assemblage (70-100 m) on silty clays, containing B. marginata, Cassidulina carinata and V. bradyana; a lower circalittoral assemblage (95-177 m) on clayey bottoms, with B. marginata, Textularia bocki and Uvigerina mediterranea; and finally, a second lower circalittoral assemblage (104-184 m) on clayey sediments, dominated by two Uvigerina species (U. mediterranea and Uvigerina peregrina), with Sphaeroidina bulloides and B. marginata. The typical V. bradyana assemblage, characterised by relatively low diversity and high dominance, marks the most eutrophicated area running parallel to the coast. The spatial distribution of assemblages is closely associated with sea-bottom sedimentary environments and bathymetry but it is also probably influenced by the outflow of the Ombrone River. The composition, structure and distribution of V. bradyana assemblage suggest an environmental model, useful for paleogeographic reconstruction in areas characterised by a river mouth and a closed morphological setting typical of a nutrient-trap.  相似文献

The relationship between density and body size is central to our understanding of species assemblages. The greatest challenge in sampling complete assemblages is obtaining reliable estimates of all taxa regardless of body size. We therefore examined the density-body size relationship in a coral reef fish assemblage using a novel sampling method which permits reliable quantification of the small/cryptic reef fish fauna. We found a negative linear relationship between density and adult body size. This is in marked contrast to the polygonal relationship previously described for other local scale assemblage studies. Our linear relationship may be a consequence of the larger differences in body size among taxa. Spanning over five orders of magnitude, the range of body sizes appears to be an important factor in shaping density-body size relationships.  相似文献

In lentic freshwater systems, vertical acoustics may underestimate fish abundance in the acoustic dead zone where fish detection capability is limited. To estimate this bias, the height of fish above the lead‐line of a benthic multi‐mesh gillnet (1.5 m high) was used to quantify both the vertical distribution of fish near the bottom and the proportion residing within the acoustic dead zone. The study was carried out at the percid‐dominated Biesbosch Reservoirs in the Netherlands. Acoustic dead zones were estimated at 7 cm above flat bottoms, and 12–34 cm above 8° sloped bottoms at depths of 5–27 m, respectively. Depending on the habitat, 36 to 75% of the gillnet catch by number was present in the acoustic dead zone, representing 5–51% of the biomass. Near‐bottom depths were highly preferred by ruffe Gymnocephalus cernua, often used by perch Perca fluviatilis and pikeperch Sander lucioperca, plus seemingly devoid of smelt Osmerus eperlanus. The total amount of fish hidden in the acoustic dead zone was estimated to be 13–39% of the whole water column. The proportion of biomass obscured in the dead zone was lower (1–12%). The conclusion is that undetected fish in the acoustic dead zone can seriously bias density assessment, which can be corrected by concurrent sampling with benthic gillnets.  相似文献

Distribution and density by habitat for age‐0, young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum, 1792), were compared for two Maine estuaries to help define essential fish habitat for this life history stage. Two estuaries (Weskeag River and Penobscot Bay) along Mid‐coast Maine were sampled monthly with daytime 1.0 m2 fixed‐frame throw traps around neap low tide, May–December over two consecutive years (2003–2004). Both eelgrass and adjacent sand/mud (20–60 cm deep) were randomly sampled with equal effort (4–12 samples per month) at two sites in both the Weskeag River and Penobscot Bay. Significantly higher densities of YOY winter flounder (2–9 cm TL) occurred in eelgrass relative to sand/mud. Density increased significantly in both habitats in 2004, and was higher in Penobscot Bay relative to the Weskeag River. YOY densities compared by eelgrass coverage within throw traps were found to be significantly higher in eelgrass that exceeded 30% coverage when compared with adjacent sand/mud areas and eelgrass coverage of 10–20%. YOY occurred in all months sampled (May–December); no density differences existed by month. These results indicate that very shallow (<0.6 m) eelgrass habitat is of key importance to YOY winter flounder in Maine estuaries and should be viewed as essential fish habitat (EFH) for this species and life stage.  相似文献

Living large benthic foraminifera (LBF) were analyzed from three transects of boxcores taken on a shelf off the coast of East Kalimantan, just north of the Mankalihat Peninsula. The transects were located at different distances to the mouth of the Berau river. In 45 boxcores, of which 28 contained living LBF, 20 species were recognised. They occurred in moderate to high density outside the pro-delta, i.e., outside the area with high clay and silt sedimentation. LBF characteristic of sandy substrates can be divided into two or possibly three assemblages, shallow (15–50 m), deep (50–85 m) and possibly very deep (> 85 m). The latter is poorly developed in the study area. Few LBF were recorded in one of the three transects, possibly because of either sediment instability or physical or chemical parameters of the sediment. Grain-size analysis of samples in the other transects indicates that LBF occurrence strongly modify the habitat. After colonisation, grain-size increases, creating more opportunities for other species and higher densities of LBF.  相似文献

We studied the reef fish assemblage of eight reefs within the oceanic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, off northeastern Brazil. In a total of 91 belt transects (20 × 2 m) we recorded 60 species from 28 families. The 25 most abundant species accounted for about 98% of all fish recorded in this study and most of these species are widely distributed in the Western Atlantic. The majority of fish counted were planktivores (37.0%), followed by mobile invertebrate feeders (28.5%), territorial herbivores (11.3%), roving herbivores (10.5%), omnivores (7.1%), macrocarnivores (6.5%) and sessile invertebrate feeders (0.03%). In terms of biomass, roving herbivores were the most representative (41.8%), followed by mobile invertebrate feeders (19.9%), macrocarnivores (14.3%), omnivores (14.0%), piscivores (8.3%), planktivores (1.4%), territorial herbivores (0.3%), and sessile invertebrate feeders (0.03%). Overall, density and biomass of fishes were positively correlated with coral cover and depth, and negatively correlated with wave exposure. These relationships are probably a response to the habitat complexity provided by the higher coral cover in deeper reefs (>10 m) of the archipelago or to the lower water turbulence below 10 m deep. Carnivores and mobile invertebrate feeders were mainly influenced by depth and non-consolidated substratum, planktivores and omnivores by wave exposure and herbivores by algal cover. Although our results suggest that habitat characteristics may play a role in determining the distribution of some fish species, we also found several habitat generalists, suggesting that the community is dominated by versatile species.  相似文献

Predation by reef fishes may play an important role in structuring nearby soft-bottom communities. Here we evaluate the hypothesis that the abundance and spatial distribution of an epibenthic mobile organism, the squat lobster Munida gregaria (=M. subrugosa), is influenced by predation by fishes that shelter in temperate rocky reefs of northern Patagonia. The density of squat lobsters on sandy bottoms around three reefs, one natural and two artificial, was estimated at increasing distances (0, 5, 15 and 45 m) from the reefs. In one of the artificial reefs a sample was first collected four months after the reef was created, before it was colonized by fish, and again nine months later when a population of reef-dwelling fish had been established. An area between 5 and 19 m wide free of squat lobsters surrounded all colonized reefs, and no effect was evident at a distance of 45 m from the reefs. In contrast, the density of squat lobsters did not vary with distance from the reef in the new, uncolonized, artificial reef. A predation exclusion experiment conducted around both artificial reefs resulted in a larger presence of squat lobsters within exclusion cages than in partial and open cages. The caging experiment provides strong evidence for attributing the halo around the reefs to predation by fishes, and to confirm that off-reef foraging behaviour depletes prey abundance in nearby soft bottoms.  相似文献

The biology of a Scottish population of the small bothid flatfish, Arnoglossus laterna , was studied from January 1975 until September 1976. The data were taken from monthly samples totalling over 500 fish trawled in 18–36 m on a soft mud bottom. Otoliths were used for age determination and a growth curve was constructed which showed that most growth occurs in the first 2–3 years of life. The maximum age recorded was 8+ years. The fish first mature sexually in their second year at a standard length of 6–7 cm and the short spawning season lasts from the late June to August. Fecundity is length-dependent and the relationship could be described by the regression equation: log fecundity = 3·3472 log standard length (mm) -2·1064. The diet consists mainly of decapod crustaceans (particularly crangonid shrimps), polychaetes, mysids and small fish.  相似文献
