We describe the fine-scale movement of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis based on analyses of video recordings of undisturbed individuals in the two habitats which mainly differed in food availability, urchin barrens and grazing front. Urchin activity decreased as urchin density increased. Individuals alternated between moving and being stationary and their behaviour did not appear to be affected by either current velocity (within the range from 0 to 15 cm s− 1) and temperature (2.3 to 6.0 °C). Movement of individuals at each location was compared to that predicted by a random walk model. Mean move length (linear distance between two stationary periods), turning angle and net squared displacement were calculated for each individual. The distribution of turning angles was uniform at each location and there was no evidence of a relationship between urchin density and either move length or urchin velocity. The random model predicted a higher dispersal rate at locations with low urchin densities, such as barrens habitats. However, the movement was sometimes greater or less than predicted by the model, suggesting the influence of local environmental factors. The deviation of individual paths from the model revealed that urchins can be stationary or adopt a local (displacement less than random), random or directional movement. The net daily distance displaced on the barrens, predicted by a random walk model, was similar to the observed movement recorded in our previous study of tagged urchins at one site, but less than that observed at a second site. We postulate that the random dispersal of urchins allows individuals on barrens to reach the kelp zone where food is more abundant although the time required to reach the kelp zone may be considerable (months to years). We examined behaviour of competent larvae of the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis provided with pebbles encrusted with coralline red algae, a strong settlement inducer, in laboratory experiments. Larvae settled at greater frequencies on upward-facing coralline surfaces and in small gaps between coralline and glass surfaces than expected by a random distribution of settlement. These patterns may be explained by encounter rate with inductive cues. There was no change in settler distributions within ~ 1 week of settlement, indicating no net movement between adjacent microhabitats. In flow, live and recently killed larvae settled or were passively entrapped at greater frequencies on high- than low-rugosity coralline crusts. Recent settlers (0.5-1 mm test diameter) were consumed by small decapod crustaceans and bulldozed by periwinkles. Juveniles became less vulnerable to predation by hermit crabs with increasing size, and reached a growth refuge at ~ 10 mm test diameter. Our laboratory findings suggest that the cryptic distribution of recent settlers is probably not due to microhabitat selection by settling larvae or early post-settlement migration, at least not in response to physical cues such as light or surface texture. Differential rates predation of young juveniles between exposed and cryptic habitats cannot be ruled out as an important determinant of this pattern. 相似文献

Following a disease outbreak that caused mass mortality of green sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, along the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia in September 1999, changes in growth and reproduction were monitored over 3.75 years as surviving individuals migrated from deep water to repopulate the shallow subtidal zone at a wave-exposed site. Urchins were sampled at 4 depth strata: at 24 m on a boulder field where the population was unaffected by the disease, at 12 and 16 m on a steeply sloping bedrock ramp, and at 8-10 m along the lower margin of a kelp bed (Laminaria digitata) where urchins formed a grazing front by January 2002. Urchins migrating shoreward from the deep-water refuge responded rapidly to increased algal productivity in the shallows through increased growth and reproduction. Measures of annual increments of skeletal elements (rotules) from urchins across the depth gradient indicated that the fastest growing individuals from the source population formed the grazing front. Urchins in the front reached a larger asymptotic size and produced larger gonads than urchins lower on the ramp. The annual cycle in gonad index showed a pronounced spring spawning period across all depths; a secondary fall spawning was evident at the front and 12 m. The presence of mature, fertilizable ova and short response time to spawning induction in both spring and fall supported the occurrence of two spawning periods. 相似文献

Subtidal benthic communities show distinct patterns of community structure related to substrate angle. Suspension-feeding invertebrate communities often dominate vertical and undercut rock surfaces, while macroalgae dominate horizontal surfaces. One factor that may shape this pattern is sea urchin grazing, which is often more intense on horizontal surfaces. The native Gulf of Maine ascidian Aplidium glabrum, like other native ascidians, is generally restricted to vertical and undercut rock walls, whereas the introduced ascidian Botrylloides violaceous is often abundant on horizontal surfaces. We tested the hypothesis that this pattern could be due to differing predation intensity on these two ascidians by Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, a dominant omnivore in the Gulf of Maine. Feeding preference of S. droebachiensis on the native A. glabrum vs. B. violaceous was estimated in the laboratory and in field experiments. Laboratory results show that S. droebachiensis prefers to feed on the native ascidian A. glabrum over B. violaceous. In the field, potential differences in the impact of S. droebachiensis on the two species were masked by the much greater growth rate of B. violaceus compared to A. glabrum. These results may help explain observed patterns in ascidian distribution in the Gulf of Maine, and ultimately the overall success of B. violaceus as a major invader throughout New England. 相似文献

We examined the potential of herbivory by the common periwinkle Littorina littorea to limit recruitment and vegetative re-growth of the invasive green alga Codium fragile ssp. tomentosoides in a series of manipulative field experiments in tidepools on a wave-exposed rocky shore in Nova Scotia, Canada. Snails were excluded or included from circular plots (14 to 20 cm diameter) with cages to compare growth and survival of C. fragile against procedural (partial cages) or natural (uncaged) control plots. Our results show that L. littorea may restrict growth and survival of C. fragile by grazing new recruits (< 2 cm thallus length), fronds of adult thalli that are bleached and necrotic, and residual holdfasts (< 2 mm thickness) of detached thalli (artificially severed to mimic wave dislodgement). Once recruits grow beyond a critical size (~ 3 cm), or damaged tissues or holdfasts regenerate, grazing of C. fragile by L. littorea appears to be limited and ineffectual. Our experimental results corroborate correlative evidence from previous studies that herbivory by L. littorea limits the abundance of C. fragile in tidepools on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, particularly pools in the high intertidal zone where these snails are abundant. Lower on the shore, littorinid grazing and physical stressors that render algae more vulnerable to grazers (e.g. UV radiation and freezing) are less intensive, and probably have less of a regulatory effect on populations of C. fragile. 相似文献

We examined the effects of native kelps, Laminaria longicruris de la Pylaie and L. digitata (Hudson) Lamouroux, and of the invasive alga, Codium fragile ssp. tomentosoides (Van Goor) Silva, on the composition and abundance of mobile benthic macrofauna and of turf algae by measuring the response of these assemblages to experimental removal of the respective macroalgal canopy. From June 2003 to November 2004, we censused macrofauna and measured canopy cover within 4 × 10 m strips of alternating Canopy Intact (control) and Canopy Removed treatments in both a Codium- and a Laminaria-dominated habitat in the rocky subtidal zone of a semi-protected embayment on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. Macroalgal canopy cover fluctuated seasonally, peaking in September/October (69% cover in 2003; 55% cover in 2004) for Codium and in May 2004 (70% cover) for kelps, and with both canopy types reaching a winter minimum in January 2004 (22 and 28% cover, respectively). In both Codium and Laminaria habitats, significant effects of canopy removal on the overall macrofaunal assemblage were evident only during periods in which canopy cover in the Canopy Intact treatment was ≥ 50%. In the Codium habitat, 4 out of 11 characteristic taxa were more abundant in the Canopy Intact treatment, where taxonomic diversity also was higher. In contrast, 4 out of 11 characteristic taxa in the Laminaria habitat were more abundant in the Canopy Removed treatment and diversity was similar between treatments. Turf algae were sampled in November 2004 and, despite between-treatment differences in the light regime, there was no significant effect of canopy removal. Our results indicate that selection of algal habitats by mobile macrofauna is likely determined by the different shelter and foraging opportunities offered by these morphologically dissimilar ecosystem engineers. 相似文献

Since its introduction in 1989, the invasive green alga Codium fragile ssp. fragile (formerly Codium fragile ssp. tomentosoides) has spread rapidly in Atlantic Canada. Although its spread has likely been facilitated by human transport, C. fragile possesses diverse modes of natural dispersal. In addition to parthenogenetically developing swarmer cells, it can propagate through the release of vegetative buds, thallus fragments, and entire, dislodged thalli. We examined the natural dispersal potential of these propagules using a combination of field and laboratory experiments. Vegetative buds were most abundant on thalli in late August, coinciding with increasing late summer wave activity. At two locations within two field sites, we examined the effects of tidal state, wave action and topography on the dispersal of fragments and intact thalli. Over a 4-hour period, retention rate was generally lower and dispersal distance of retained propagules higher: during flood than ebb tide; at the more wave-exposed locations; and for fragments than thalli. Dispersal direction corresponded with topography or flood tide currents at certain locations, but was often bi-directional or random, suggesting an added role of wave action. Over periods of weeks, the retention rate of marked detrital thalli was negatively related to the magnitude of wave activity. In the laboratory, settling rate was negatively related to propagule length, and large buds had higher critical shear erosional velocities than either small buds or fragments. Our results indicate that large propagules of C. fragile, such as intact adult thalli, have a generally low dispersal potential (meters), but may be transported longer distances (kilometers) during storms or when positively buoyant. Fragments and buds are regularly transported 10's of meters at a time at average flow velocities. However, they also become resuspended in average flows, and probably disperse longer distances over multiple resuspension events, or when positively buoyant. Once settled, the smallest propagules may be less easily resuspended or transported along the bottom as they become entrapped by small-scale topographic features or turf algae. The wide variety of propagules produced by C. fragile and the variable distances over which different propagule types may be transported give C. fragile the advantage of both short- and long-distance dispersal, and have likely played a role in the invasive success of this alga. 相似文献

海胆遮蔽行为对于海胆的生长和发育的影响目前还不清楚,在实验室条件下,研究了遮蔽行为对海刺猬(Glyptocidariscrenularis)摄食、生长和性腺性状的影响。实验设两个对照组和一个处理组:对照组为无任何遮蔽条件的空白组和以堆积砖块创造的黑暗空间来满足海胆的掩蔽行为的掩蔽组,遮蔽组则以菲律宾蛤仔(Ruditapes philippinarum)的贝壳作为遮蔽物来满足海胆的遮蔽行为。结果显示:遮蔽组的海胆周摄食量要显著大于掩蔽组(P<0.05),而空白组与遮蔽组和掩蔽组之间的差异不显著(P>0.05);各组海胆的存活率没有显著差异(P>0.05);空白组和遮蔽组海胆的壳径、壳高、体重要显著大于掩蔽组(P<0.05),而空白组和遮蔽组之间没有显著性的差异(P>0.05);空白组和遮蔽组的性腺湿重、性腺干重、性腺指数、壳湿重、壳干重、亚氏提灯湿重、亚氏提灯干重要显著大于掩蔽组(P<0.05),而空白组和遮蔽组之间没有显著性的差异(P>0.05);空白组的提灯指数要显著小于遮蔽组和掩蔽组(P<0.05),而遮蔽组和掩蔽组之间没有显著的差异(P>0.05)。结果证明,遮蔽和掩蔽行为对海刺猬生长及发育的影响是有差别的,掩蔽行为对海刺猬的生长与发育造成了负面影响,而遮蔽行为在一定的生活环境条件下不会对其生长造成影响。研究表明,海刺猬的遮蔽行为反映了其对外界不利环境条件的一种适应性,且这种行为对其生长和发育的影响与掩蔽行为有所不同。至于海刺猬遮蔽行为的进化选择压力,目前的研究还不足以下定论,需要进一步深入的研究。 相似文献

在实验室条件下,研究了多棘海盘车和海燕这两种海星对栉孔扇贝、菲律宾蛤仔和贻贝三种双壳贝类的捕食选择性和摄食率及温度的影响,测定了捕食Q10温度系数。结果显示:多棘海盘车和海燕对三种贝类均可捕食,且表现出明显的捕食选择性,选择顺序依次为菲律宾蛤仔、贻贝和栉孔扇贝。海星对菲律宾蛤仔的摄食率显著高于其他两种贝类,分别为0.50和0.37个/d;对扇贝的摄食率最低,分别为0.05和0.07个/d。海星摄食率随水温升高而呈上升的趋势,总平均摄食干重分别为0.69 和0.79 g/d。水温从4.3 ℃升高到7.8 ℃多棘海盘车和海燕捕食Q10系数分别为6.38和2.33,而水温从7.8 ℃升高至13.3 ℃时,Q10系数没有显著升高,分别为1.13和1.22。说明水温从4.3 ℃升高时,海星捕食强度显著升高,是防御海星的重点时期。根据海星对贝类捕食的选择性,可在养殖笼内放入贻贝等低值贝类来保护扇贝,缓冲海星对扇贝的捕食,并在缓冲期间对养殖笼内的海星进行清除。 相似文献

Developmental plasticity in the morphology of planktotrophic echinoid larvae has been studied primarily in temperate sea urchins from the Northern Hemisphere. These studies have shown that echinoplutei with reduced food ration generally respond by increasing the length of the larval arms, and thus the length of the ciliated band, and delaying formation of the rudiment. Using the endemic New Zealand sea urchin Evechinus chloroticus we tested for the presence of developmental plasticity in larvae fed a high or low algal food ration (6000 or 600 Dunaliella cells/ml), or with no algal food. Our results show that developmental plasticity in larval form is seen in a Southern Hemisphere representative of the Family Echinometridae, but the general pattern of longer arms with low food ration was only seen in the earliest part of development. Larvae in the High food treatment were largest in all dimensions and formed rudiments within 23 days of fertilization. Larvae fed a low algal ration or no algal food stalled at the four-arm echinopluteus stage, and were significantly smaller in size, and differed in shape, when compared in a multivariate analysis to the High food treatment. We suggest that the response of echinoplutei to low levels of particulate food is a species-specific trait, depending in part on the level of dependence of the larvae on exogenous food. Previous studies in Lytechinus variegatus, and the present study with E. chloroticus, suggest that in species where development stalls at the four-arm stage, the pattern of longer larval arms with low food ration will only be seen during the initial early period of larval growth. Additionally our results show that there can be significant variation in larval morphology between replicate jars in the same feeding treatment, suggesting that future research on developmental plasticity should also consider differences in larval morphology between culture containers. 相似文献

The fiddler crab Uca panamensis (Stimpson, 1959) inhabits rocky shores. We examined its preference for feeding substratum—sand or rock—and its manner of feeding. The crab made its burrow in the sand among rocks but preferred to feed on rocks. The feeding time decreased as the distance between the burrow and the rock increased. We consider this to be a result of exclusive interaction among the crabs because they defended their feeding area on the rocks against others.The crab wetted a small area of rock with water held in the branchial chambers before and during feeding. It pinched up the wetted surface in the minor chelipeds, which have bundles of setae on the posterior tips of the dactyl and pollex, and put the material into its buccal cavity. It never expelled sand pellets while feeding on rock, which indicates that it swallowed the food particles directly, without sorting. The bundles of setae retained water by capillary attraction, which suggests that they capture the suspended fine food particles scraped from the rock. The wetting action may prevent the fine materials from dispersing. We consider that morphological alteration of the minor chelipeds, the application of water from the branchial chambers, and direct swallowing permit the fiddler crab to feed on fine materials attached to rocks. 相似文献

Cyclin D genes regulate the cell cycle, growth and differentiation in response to intercellular signaling. While the promoters of vertebrate cyclin D genes have been analyzed, the cis-regulatory sequences across an entire cyclin D locus have not. Doing so would increase understanding of how cyclin D genes respond to the regulatory states established by developmental gene regulatory networks, linking cell cycle and growth control to the ontogenetic program. Therefore, we conducted a cis-regulatory analysis on the cyclin D gene, SpcycD, of the sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, during embryogenesis, identifying upstream and intronic sequences, located within six defined regions bearing one or more cis-regulatory modules each. 相似文献

Thrombosis is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Thrombolytic agents are important for both the prevention and treatment of thrombosis. In this study, codiase, a new bi-functional fibrinolytic serine protease having thrombolytic, anticoagulant, and antiplatelet activities was purified from marine green alga, Codium fragile. The molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated to be 48.9 kDa by SDS-PAGE, and mass spectrometry. Fibrin zymography analysis showed an active band with similar molecular weight. The N-terminal sequence was found to be APKASTDQTLPL, which is different from that of other known fibrinolytic enzymes. Codiase displayed maximum activity at 30 °C and pH 6.0, and the activity was inhibited by Zn2+ and Fe2+. Moreover, the enzyme activity was strongly inhibited by serine protease inhibitor such as PMSF. Codiase exhibited high specificity for the substrate S-2288, and the Km and Vmax values for this substrate were found to be 0.24 mM and 79 U/ml respectively. Fibrin plate assays revealed that it was able to hydrolyze fibrin clot either directly or by activation of plasminogen. Codiase effectively hydrolyzed fibrin and fibrinogen, preferentially degrading α- and Aα chains, followed by γ–γ, and γ-chains. However, it provoked slower degradation of Bβ and β-chains. The structural change of fibrin clot and fibrinogen by codiase was also detected by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy analysis. In vitro and in vivo studies revealed that codiase reduces thrombosis in concentration-dependent manner. Codiase was found to prolong activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and prothrombin time (PT). PFA-100 studies showed that codiase prolonged the closure time (CT) of citrated whole human blood. These favorable antithrombotic profiles together with its anticoagulant and platelet disaggregation properties, and lack of toxicity to mice and NIH-3T3 cells, make it a potential agent for thrombolytic therapy. 相似文献

While epibiotic associations between macrobenthic invertebrates are common, the role they play in the feeding ecology of intervening species is often incompletely understood. The diets of epibiotic sea anemones Allantactis parasitica and their gastropod hosts were analyzed using digestive tract contents, lipid biomarkers and observations of live specimens in an attempt to detect dietary feedback from the facultative association. Comparisons were made using symbiotic individuals and asymbiotic counterparts collected at depths of 191-627 m from three neighbouring areas in the northwest Atlantic. Gastropods carrying one or two epibionts had higher stomach indices than those harbouring three epibionts or no epibiont. The diet of symbiotic gastropods was also more diversified based on stomach contents and lipid analysis. Among other things, symbiotic gastropods contained four times more lipids and a greater proportion of Σn−3 fatty acids. Gastrovascular cavity content indices of asymbiotic sea anemones were generally lower than those of symbiotic counterparts. Their cavities were more often empty, and their diet less diversified with fewer benthic items, suggesting that foraging of gastropods through the sediments makes more food available to sea anemones living as epibionts. Lipid analysis showed some disparities between symbiotic and asymbiotic sea anemones at the regional scale, including in percent phospholipids and in the proportion of certain fatty acids. Together these findings indicate that mutual protection against predators leads to prolonged and more efficient foraging for gastropods and increased time spent deployed (feeding) in food-rich areas for sea anemones, thus enabling both partners to fully exploit food resources that may be limited at bathyal depths. 相似文献

We ran field experiments to examine the responses of the black sea urchin Tetrapygus niger to predatory sea stars. Trials involving simulated attacks (one or several arms of a sea star being placed on top of half the urchin) showed that the urchin differentiated between the predatory sea stars, Heliaster helianthus and Meyenaster gelatinosus, and a non-predatory sea star, Stichaster striatus, and showed almost no response to a sea star mimic. We further compared the responses of the urchin to different threat levels presented by the two predatory sea stars. The highest threat level was a simulated attack, then mere contact, and subsequently sea stars being placed at different distances from the urchin. All urchins responded to simulated attacks and contact with both sea stars. The proportion responding decreased with distance and more rapidly in trials with H. helianthus (0% at a distance of 30 cm) than with M. gelatinosus (33% at a distance of 50 cm). At each of the threat levels where there was a response to both sea stars, the urchins responded more rapidly to M. gelatinosus than to H. helianthus. In a third experiment where a predatory sea star was added to a circular area (1-m diameter) in which either 4-8 or 11-19 undisturbed urchins were present, the urchins fled the area more rapidly when the added sea star was M. gelatinosus, but the rate of fleeing did not vary with density, as might occur if there was communication among urchins using alarm signals. Our observations suggest that M. gelatinosus presents a stronger predatory threat than H. helianthus. This corresponds to field observations showing that the urchins are more frequently consumed by M. gelatinosus. These are the first field experiments demonstrating distance chemodetection by a marine invertebrate under back-and-forth water flow from wave activity. 相似文献

Triatoma brasiliensis is an important vector of Trypanosoma cruzi in Brazil. The feeding efficiency on its hosts depends on several parameters including the maintenance of the ingested blood at low viscosity, which could be modulated by the anterior midgut (crop) anticoagulant and haemagglutinant activities. In the present study, we characterized T. brasiliensis crop haemagglutination activity and evaluated its importance in the feeding process. Soluble crop contents (SCC) of T. brasiliensis were able to agglutinate rat, mouse and rabbit eryhtrocytes, but had no activity on cattle and Thrichomys apereoides, a rodent species commonly associated with T. brasiliensis in the wild. The haemagglutination was characterized by the immediate formation of several clusters of erythrocytes connected by flexible elastic-like fibers. The feeding efficiency of T. brasiliensis on rat (agglutinated by SCC) was almost double that from T. apereoides (not agglutinated by SCC). The influence of haemagglutination on feeding was confirmed by artificially feeding bugs on a diet composed of cattle or rat erythrocytes. The bugs fed on cattle erythrocytes had lower ingestion rates in comparison to those fed on rats. The results indicate that, in addition to other parameters, haemagglutination brought about by SCC has an important role in the feeding efficiency of T. brasiliensis. 相似文献

We measured changes in the feeding rate and food absorption efficiency of two suspension feeding bivalves, cross-trasplanted between habitats with special emphasis on their capacity for differential absorption of biochemical components from their food supply. Mulinia edulis were moved from the intertidal zone to the subtidal zone, and Mytilus chilensis from the subtidal to the intertidal zone for a period of 7 days, and then compared with animal that had not been transplanted. Experimentally prepared diets similar to those available in the two different environments were offered to the bivalves, and their rates of feeding and differential uptake of biochemical components were determined and statistically compared. The two species did not achieve complete acclimation of their feeding behaviour during the transplant period since the highest ingestion rates for biochemical components occurred under dietary conditions that reflected their habitats of origin. Absorption efficiency showed greater acclimation than the other physiological parameters measured, indicating the capacity of these species to modulate their enzymatic-digestive activity depending on food composition. We conclude that both Mytilus and Mulinia have a certain degree of physiological plasticity in their feeding behaviour and assimilatory balance of biochemical components, being greater in Mytilus. When both species encounter ambient food conditions characteristic of their normal habitats, they show maximum values of food absorption, while under conditions where their typical diets are exchanged (Mytilus in intertidal and Mulinia in subtidal), the energy absorbed declines in each, but in ways very different between the two species. To establish if nutrients limit the growth of bivalves requires information not only on the quality of food available, but also the animals' feeding behaviour and endogenous metabolic demands. We hypothesized that growth of the Sydney rock oyster (Saccostrea glomerata) would vary in response to seasonal changes in food quality rather than quantity. We also predicted that the oysters would show feeding preferences for nitrogen over carbon, and this behaviour would result in carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios for ingested and absorbed matter that would be lower than the C/N of both the seston and the oysters' estimated metabolic maintenance requirements. The experiments were done in two phases under natural conditions. In phase 1, feeding behaviour was assessed on a single occasion and the results used to pose hypotheses for testing in phase 2, which included measurements made on three occasions encompassing autumn, winter and spring conditions. Growth rates varied with changes in ambient food quality and not with the concentration of total suspended matter. Feeding behaviour responded to food quality and, in most cases, resulted in nitrogen enrichment. For example, when nitrogen was potentially limiting to growth and/or maintenance, due to high food C/N (July) or high nitrogen demand (March), pre-ingestive selection ensured nitrogen enrichment of ingested matter and C/N ratios of ingested matter which were below the maintenance requirement. However, in November, when endogenous demands indicated an increased requirement for carbon, feeding behaviour resulted in carbon enrichment, an increase in carbon conversion efficiency, and ingested C/N ratios greater than the maintenance requirement. The results support the assertion of variable feeding physiology in oysters, responsive to both exogenous (seasonal differences in carbon and nitrogen availability) and endogenous (cycles of reproduction and growth) factors. 相似文献
