Abstract. Araucaria forests are among the most threatened biomes of one of the world's 25 biodiversity hotspots, the south Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest. This study was focused on flatworm community structure in three protected areas located on the eastern border of the Araucaria Plateau in south Brazil. We addressed three main questions: (1) How species‐rich are Araucaria forests? (2) Are there any differences in the community structure within the three areas? (3) What is the distribution pattern of land flatworms in this type of forest? A total of 51 flatworm species in ten genera and two subfamilies were found. Non‐metric multidimensional scaling analysis showed that the assemblage structure differed within the three areas. The abundance and richness varied in time, being affected by an interaction between season and areas. Araucaria forests on the eastern border of the Araucaria Plateau should be considered a hotspot of land planarian diversity, harboring an estimated 64 species. The high combined species richness in the protected areas studied emphasizes the importance of their preservation. Notwithstanding their close proximity, they are not redundant in maintaining regional biodiversity.  相似文献

Studies undertaken in the Atlantic Coastal Forest have revealed a notable floristic heterogeneity within this vegetation type in NE Brazil. However, there is still a great need for detailed comparisons of the floristic relationships between the various forest types found there. This work presents an analysis of the floristic similarity (at the species level) of these forest as revealed by floristic surveys, with the aim of better understanding and defining this vegetation. Using a binary matrix, grouping, ordering, and TWINSPAN analysis were performed on 742 tree/shrub species listed in 35 different plant surveys. These tree/shrub species were divided by these analysis into two large floristic groups – ombrophilous and semideciduous. The semideciduous group was formed, in general, by forest areas located at altitudes above 700 m (montane forests), and could itself be divided into two subgroups. The first subgroup was located more inland (Pernambuco), while the second subgroup was located nearer the coast (within the states of Pernambuco and Ceará). The ombrophilous group was quite heterogeneous, but could also be divided into two floristic subgroups: i) lowland forests (below 100 m a.s.l) in the states of Pernambuco, Paraíba, and in two areas of Bahia, as well as some montane forests (in Pernambuco, between 640 and 900 m a.s.l.); ii) lowlands forests in the states of Alagoas and Bahia. This latter subgroup is the largest and best defined, and has the highest degree of internal similarity. Nonetheless, it can be further subdivided into two smaller classes, one in Alagoas and the other in Bahia State. The results of this study demonstrate that the concept of the Atlantic Coastal Forest could also include montane ombrophilous forests in Pernambuco State, as these forests form a single floristic unit together with lowland forests in that state. Abstract Araucaria Forest expansion over grassland takes place under wet climate conditions and low disturbance and it is hypothesized that isolated trees established on grassland facilitate the establishment of forest woody species beneath their canopies. Forest with Araucaria angustifolia is a particular type of Brazilian Atlantic Forest and the main forest type on the highland plateau in south Brazil, often forming mosaics with natural Campos grassland. The objectives of this paper were to evaluate the role of isolated shrubs and trees as colonization sites for seedlings of Araucaria Forest woody species on grassland, to determine which species function as preferential nurse plants in the process and the importance of vertebrate diaspore dispersal on the structure of seedling communities beneath nurse plants. The study was conducted in São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul State, where we sampled isolated shrubs and trees in natural grassland near Araucaria Forest edges. Seedlings were counted and identified, and seedling diaspore dispersal syndromes, size and colour were registered. We detected 11 woody species with a potential role in nucleating grassland colonization by forest species. Beneath the canopies of nurse plants more forest species seedlings were found compared with open field grassland and the seedlings had diaspores mostly dispersed by vertebrates. Also, more seedlings were found under the canopy of A. angustifolia than beneath other nurse plant species. We conclude that A. angustifolia trees established on grassland act as nurse plants, by attracting disperser birds that promote colonization of the site by other forest species seedlings, and that under low level of grassland disturbance, conservation of frugivorous vertebrate assemblages may increase forest expansion over natural grassland and also facilitate the regeneration of degraded forest areas.  相似文献

The Fungal Ribosomallntergenic Spacer Analysis (F-RlSA) was used to characterize soil fungal communities from three Cecosystems ofAraucaria angustifolia from Brazil: a native forest and two replanted forest ecosystems, one of them with a past history of wildfire. The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) infection was evaluated inAraucaria roots of 18-monthold axenic plants previously inoculated with soils collected from those areas in a greenhouse experiment. The principal componentanalysis of F-RISA profiles showed different soil fungal community betweenthe three studied areas. Sixty three percent of F-RISA fragments amplified in the soil and the substrate samples presented lengths between 500 and 700 bp. The number of Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) was 34 for soil and 38 for substrate, however, more fragments were detected in soil (214) than in substrate (163). Anin silico F-RISA analysis to compare our data with ITSI-5.8S-ITS2 sequences from NCBI database showed the presence of Ascomycota, Basidiomycota and Glomeromycota among the soil and substrate fungal communities. AMF infection was higher in plants inoculated with soil from the native forest and the replanted forest with wildfire, both presenting similar chemical characteristics but with different disturbance levels. These results indicate that soil chemical composition may influence the soil fungal community structures rather than the anthropogenicor fire disturbances.  相似文献

We examine the effects of forest fragmentation on the structure and composition of tree assemblages within three seasonal and aseasonal forest types of southern Brazil, including evergreen, Araucaria, and deciduous forests. We sampled three southernmost Atlantic Forest landscapes, including the largest continuous forest protected areas within each forest type. Tree assemblages in each forest type were sampled within 10 plots of 0.1 ha in both continuous forests and 10 adjacent forest fragments. All trees within each plot were assigned to trait categories describing their regeneration strategy, vertical stratification, seed-dispersal mode, seed size, and wood density. We detected differences among both forest types and landscape contexts in terms of overall tree species richness, and the density and species richness of different functional groups in terms of regeneration strategy, seed dispersal mode and woody density. Overall, evergreen forest fragments exhibited the largest deviations from continuous forest plots in assemblage structure. Evergreen, Araucaria and deciduous forests diverge in the functional composition of tree floras, particularly in relation to regeneration strategy and stress tolerance. By supporting a more diversified light-demanding and stress-tolerant flora with reduced richness and abundance of shade-tolerant, old-growth species, both deciduous and Araucaria forest tree assemblages are more intrinsically resilient to contemporary human-disturbances, including fragmentation-induced edge effects, in terms of species erosion and functional shifts. We suggest that these intrinsic differences in the direction and magnitude of responses to changes in landscape structure between forest types should guide a wide range of conservation strategies in restoring fragmented tropical forest landscapes worldwide.  相似文献

Human disturbance threatens and modifies forest ecosystems worldwide. Previous studies have investigated the effects of human impact on local bird communities in disturbed forests, but we still lack information on how bird species richness and ecological processes respond to different forest modifications present at a landscape scale. In a heterogeneous South African landscape, we chose six types of indigenous scarp forest, differing in the intensity of human disturbance: continuous natural forests and natural forest fragments in nature reserves, forest fragments in eucalyptus plantations, fragments in the agricultural matrix, forest gardens and secondary forests in game reserves. In 36 study sites, we investigated the bird community using point counts and observed the seed removal of birds at the native tree species Celtis africana. Species richness did not differ among the forest types, but abundance varied significantly with most birds observed in fragments in the agricultural matrix, forest gardens, and secondary forests. The higher bird abundance in these forests was mainly due to forest generalists, shrubland and open country species whereas forest specialists were rarely present. Changes in species composition were also confirmed by multivariate analysis which clearly separated bird communities by forest type. Frugivore abundance in C. africana was highest in natural forest fragments, fragments in the agricultural matrix, forest gardens and secondary forests. The same trend was found for the estimated total number of fruits removed per C. africana tree, though the differences among forest types were not significant. Consequently, modified forests seem to maintain important ecological functions as they provide food sources for generalist species which may, due to their mobility, enhance natural plant regeneration. However, we could show that protected forest habitats are important refugees for specialist species sensitive to human disturbance.  相似文献

At the edges of tropical rain forest fragments, altered abiotic and biotic conditions influence the structure and dynamics of plant communities. In Neotropical rain forests, palms (Arecaceae) are important floristic and ecological elements. Palms’ responses to edge effects appear to be idiosyncratic and to depend on the level of disturbance at edges. This paper explores how variation in forest structure at the edges of two old-growth forest fragments in a tropical rain forest in western Ecuador affects palms of different species, life-forms, and size classes. We investigate (1) how edge effects influence the relative proportion of palm adults and juveniles, (2) how distance from the forest edge affects palm density and species richness, (3) how altered forest structure along edges affects palm density. We found that at edges (1) palm communities had a lower proportion of adults relative to juvenile individuals compared to continuous forests, (2) the density of two species of palms and the overall species richness of the palm community tended to decrease toward the edges within forest fragments, and, (3) altered forest structure decreased the density of adult palms. Hence, edge effects on palms were controlled by the degree of modification of the forest structure, and by species responses to edge-related disturbance.  相似文献

为揭示旅游干扰对于百里杜鹃风景区杜鹃群落特征影响,选取杜鹃纯林和杜鹃混交林两种杜鹃群落,分析干扰对群落结构及物种多样性的影响。采用典型抽样的方法进行样地设置和调查,通过旅游影响系数分析样地旅游干扰等级,并分析对比了不同旅游干扰程度和干扰方式对群落特征的影响。研究表明:1)百里杜鹃景区共有植被67科102属130种,其中杜鹃纯林共有植被97种,以马缨杜鹃、箭竹和露珠杜鹃为优势物种,杜鹃混交林共有植被115种,以马缨杜鹃、露珠杜鹃和映山红为优势种;2)两种杜鹃群落均在中等干扰水平时具有最高的Berger-Parker丰富度指数和Shannon多样性指数,中度干扰一定程度上促进了杜鹃群落物种多样性增加,不同的是两种群落的Shannon指数变化趋势不同,在杜鹃纯林中表现为中度干扰>轻度干扰>重度干扰,而在杜鹃混交林中中度干扰>重度干扰>轻度干扰,相较于杜鹃纯林,杜鹃混交林物种更为丰富,在旅游干扰下生物多样性更为稳定,抗干扰能力更强,而杜鹃纯林受旅游干扰波动显著;3)垃圾指数、踩踏指数与杜鹃混交林物种多样性指数、群落生长结构无明显相关性,而垃圾指数与杜鹃纯林Shannon多样性指数、物种数以及草本均高呈显著负相关,踩踏指数与杜鹃纯林灌木层高度、盖度呈现极显著负相关,与草本均高呈显著正相关;4)各杜鹃群落对旅游干扰有不同响应,为保持杜鹃群落稳定性,应在花季适当分流,严格控制杜鹃纯林的重度干扰。  相似文献

Kitahara and Fujii, in 1994, analyzed the butterfly communities along a gradient of human disturbance by applying the generalist/specialist concept. Butterfly species were classified into generalist or specialist species based on their voltinism (seasonal time dimension) and potential larval resource breadth (food dimension). The community structure and species composition showed the systematic changes along the gradient. To verify the generality of those trends, we monitored five grassland butterfly communities with varying degrees of human disturbance twice a month during 1985 by the line transect method at the foot of Mt. Fuji, central Japan, and analyzed their structure in a manner similar to that employed by Kitahara and Fujii. Most results were consistent with the patterns recognized by Kitahara and Fujii. The route (community) order based on increasing human disturbance was strongly and negatively correlated with butterfly species richness but with neither butterfly species diversity (H′) nor evenness (J′). Also, the degree of human disturbance was significantly and negatively correlated with the number of specialist species, but not with that of generalists, in a community. Butterfly species richness was more strongly correlated with the number of specialist species than with that of generalists. Our analyses also showed that the generalist species were distributed more widely over the communities than were the specialists. However, in contrast to the trend revealed by Kitahara and Fujii, there was no significant difference in the population densities and in the spatial population variability between the two species groups. As a whole, our analyses confirmed the consistency of most community patterns detected by Kitahara and Fujii. The causes of the inconsistencies in some patterns were thought to be mainly the present habitat conditions with a relatively short growing season at high altitudes. We used dung beetles to evaluate the impact of urbanization on insect biodiversity in three Atlantic Forest fragments in Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. This study provides the first empirical evidence of the impact of urbanization on richness, abundance, composition and guild structure of dung beetle communities from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We evaluated the community aspects (abundance, richness, composition and food guilds) of dung beetles in fragments with different degrees of immersion in the urban matrix using pitfall traps with four alternative baits (rotten meat, rotten fish, pig dung and decaying banana). A total of 1 719 individuals were collected, belonging to 29 species from 11 genera and six Scarabaeinae tribes. The most urban‐immersed fragment showed a higher species dominance and the beetle community captured on dung presented the greatest evenness. The beetle communities were distinct with respect to the fragments and feeding habits. Except for the dung beetle assemblage in the most urbanized forest fragment, all others exhibited contrasting differences in species composition attracted to each bait type. Our results clearly show that the degree of urbanization affects Atlantic Forest dung beetle communities and that the preservation of forest fragments inside the cities, even small ones, can provide refuges for Scarabaeinae.  相似文献

Question: Is it possible to model the germinative and resprouting behaviour of plant species in Atlantic shrublands and woodlands in relation to fire intensity? Is it possible to recognise different functional regenerative types in these plant species? Location: Galicia, NW Iberian Peninsula. Methods: We explored the patterns of germination and resprouting plant responses in relation to different intensities of fire using data from 37 trees, shrubs and herbaceous species growing in Atlantic shrublands and woodlands. Results: Synthesizing their germinative and resprouting behaviour, we created two graphical models: the Functional Germinative Model (FGM) and the Functional Sprouting Model (FSM). Integrating the germinative and resprouting responses, and taking into account fire intensity, we created the Functional Regenerative Model (FRM), which predicts the post‐fire recuperation of the populations of each species. The FRM has been validated with data from four Atlantic communities. We identified four plant functional regenerative types (PFRT) for Atlantic forest vegetation and we propose three intensities of response. Conclusions: The extracted models (FGM, FSM and FRM) and the grouping of species in four PFRTs could be applicable to more Atlantic species, to disturbance ecology in general and to population, community and landscape management.  相似文献

Terrestrial flatworms, or Terricola, are sensitive to environmentalchanges and therefore might be excellent indicators of the conservation statusof natural habitats. The present study aimed to answer two main questions: (1)is terrestrial planarian diversity affected by human disturbances, and (2) isthere any species or group of species that indicates such disturbance? The studysite, National Forest of São Francisco de Paula, Brazil, was originallycovered by a mixed ombrophilous forest, but successive reforestations andselective logging have modified the original landscape. We studied Terricoladiversity in the four main habitats in the study area: mixed ombrophilous forest(NA), ombrophilous forest with selective Araucariaangustifolia logging (N), A. angustifoliareforestation (A), and reforestation of Pinus elliottii(P). According to an increasing degree of disturbance, the habitats might beordered as follows: (NA)<(N)<(A)<(P). We conducted 24 surveys in eachhabitat over a period of 1 year. Our results indicate that: (1)Terricola diversity is inversely related to the degree of habitat disturbance;(2) there are species (Geoplana franciscana,Geoplana sp. 5, and possibly Geoplanidae 3 andNotogynaphallia guaiana) that prefer habitats located onthe extreme right along the main axis of a detrended correspondence analysisordination and therefore can be considered as indicators of well preserved,natural habitats. On the other hand there are species(Xerapoa sp. 1, Choeradoplanaiheringi, G. marginata sensu Marcus andGeoplana sp. 2) preferring more disturbed habitats, whichmay form biological indicators of such disturbances.  相似文献

Lianas play a key role in forest structure, species diversity, as well as functional aspects of tropical forests. Although the study of lianas in the tropics has increased dramatically in recent years, basic information on liana communities for the Brazilian Atlantic Forest is still scarce. To understand general patterns of liana abundance and biomass along an elevational gradient (0–1,100 m asl) of coastal Atlantic Forest, we carried out a standard census for lianas ≥1 cm in five 1-ha plots distributed across different forest sites. On average, we found a twofold variation in liana abundance and biomass between lowland and other forest types. Large lianas (≥10 cm) accounted for 26–35% of total liana biomass at lower elevations, but they were not recorded in montane forests. Although the abundance of lianas displayed strong spatial structure at short distances, the present local forest structure played a minor role structuring liana communities at the scale of 0.01 ha. Compared to similar moist and wet Neotropical forests, lianas are slightly less abundant in the Atlantic Forest, but the total biomass is similar. Our study highlights two important points: (1) despite some studies have shown the importance of small-scale canopy disturbance and support availability, the spatial scale of the relationships between lianas and forest structure can vary greatly among tropical forests; (2) our results add to the evidence that past canopy disturbance levels and minimum temperature variation exert influence on the structure of liana communities in tropical moist forests, particularly along short and steep elevational gradients.  相似文献

Abstract We investigated patterns of spatial distribution and microhabitat selection of rodents in a patch (26 ha) of mixed ombrophilous forest (or Araucaria forest), dominated by the Araucaria ‘pine’Araucaria angustifolia, in the National Park of Aparados da Serra, RS, in southern Brazil. We conducted monthly trapping sessions lasting 6 days (from June 2000 to June 2001) using a square grid of 121 trap stations, separated by 15 m (2.25 ha). We measured 10 microhabitat variables that could influence species distribution. These variables were related to the occurrence of mammals by using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and stepwise multiple regression. The distribution patterns of the three most common rodents differed significantly (χ2 = 38.6; P < 0.002), with Delomys dorsalis being more clumped than the other two species. Both CCA and multiple regression analysis showed a significant effect of microhabitat variables on species occurrence. The multiple regression parameters for Oligoryzomys nigripes were R2 = 0.142, P < 0.05, for Akodon montensis were R2 = 0.222, P < 0.01, and for D. dorsalis R2 = 0.323, P < 0.001. Variables that significantly influenced species distribution were vegetation density at 1 m height and length of fallen logs for O. nigripes, canopy cover for A. montensis, and vegetation density at 2 m height, quantity of leaves of Araucaria trees (negative relationship), tree density (except Araucaria trees), and number of potential shelters, for D. dorsalis. The results indicated that D. dorsalis is the most habitat specialist among the rodent species and that there are no apparent competitive interactions.  相似文献

Efforts to protect the remaining Araucaria Forest fragments in Southern Brazil have focused on large forests dominated by the threatened species Araucaria angustifolia. However, such an approach can miss significant biodiversity by ignoring smaller forest fragments scattered throughout the landscape, many of which exist on small farms. Here, I evaluate the method used to define a set of natural reserves in Southern Brazil to assess if it captures and preserves the significant biodiversity that exists in this unique biome. I used a relatively simple field sampling methodology and statistical analyses to evaluate floristic and structural parameters, comparing tree species diversity within a large forest fragment (with and without A. angustifolia dominance) to smaller fragments in the surrounding landscape. While stands dominated by A. angustifolia showed primary forest‐like physiognomy, they did not have the levels of diversity expected for old‐growth forests. Traditional forestry parameters, especially basal area and number of individuals, are useful for differentiating forest types in terms of structure. While no single diversity index provides a complete picture of the composition and variation of diversity in forest fragments, when taken together and assessed using extrapolation and comparative statistics, they provide a meaningful method for comparing and identifying high priority areas for conservation. Future conservation strategies should look to alternative approaches for assessing biodiversity across the landscape, while including small‐scale landowners in conservation efforts.  相似文献

In this paper we operated ant collections in three inland Atlantic forest fragments and in the neighboring Edmundo Navarro de Andrade State Forest (FEENA), an Eucalyptus plantation located in Rio Claro, interior of S?o Paulo State. We show that the ant communities of the native forest fragments are more similar among themselves than to the ant community of FEENA. Thus we evidence that, in addition to the clear difference in vegetation segment, other components of the biota (like ants) can be different between FEENA and the native forest fragments. Our results conveniently served as a basis to discuss the proposal of connecting FEENA to the three native forest fragments by a habitat corridor. These fragments are important to conservation purposes since they represent the biggest areas of native vegetation in the region.  相似文献

Effects of forest management on stream communities have been widely documented, but the role that climate plays in the disturbance outcomes is not understood. In order to determine whether the effect of disturbance from forest management on headwater stream communities varies by climate, we evaluated benthic macroinvertebrate communities in 24 headwater streams that differed in forest management (logged-roaded vs. unlogged-unroaded, hereafter logged and unlogged) within two ecological sub-regions (wet versus dry) within the eastern Cascade Range, Washington, USA. In both ecoregions, total macroinvertebrate density was highest at logged sites (P = 0.001) with gathering-collectors and shredders dominating. Total taxonomic richness and diversity did not differ between ecoregions or forest management types. Shredder densities were positively correlated with total deciduous and Sitka alder (Alnus sinuata) riparian cover. Further, differences in shredder density between logged and unlogged sites were greater in the wet ecoregion (logging × ecoregion interaction; P = 0.006) suggesting that differences in post-logging forest succession between ecoregions were responsible for differences in shredder abundance. Headwater stream benthic community structure was influenced by logging and regional differences in climate. Future development of ecoregional classification models at the subbasin scale, and use of functional metrics in addition to structural metrics, may allow for more accurate assessments of anthropogenic disturbances in mountainous regions where mosaics of localized differences in climate are common.  相似文献

Dung beetle community structures changes due to the effects of destruction, fragmentation, isolation and decrease in tropical forest area, and therefore are considered ecological indicators. In order to assess the influence of type of maize cultivated and associated maize management on dung beetle communities in Atlantic Forest fragments surrounded by conventional and transgenic maize were evaluated 40 Atlantic Forest fragments of different sizes, 20 surrounded by GM maize and 20 surrounded by conventional maize, in February 2013 and 2014 in Southern Brazil. After applying a sampling protocol in each fragment (10 pitfall traps baited with human feces or carrion exposed for 48 h), a total of 3454 individuals from 44 species were captured: 1142 individuals from 38 species in GM maize surrounded fragments, and 2312 from 42 species in conventional maize surrounded fragments. Differences in dung beetle communities were found between GM and conventional maize communities. As expected for fragmented areas, the covariance analysis showed a greater species richness in larger fragments under both conditions; however species richness was greater in fragments surrounded by conventional maize. Dung beetle structure in the forest fragments was explained by environmental variables, fragment area, spatial distance and also type of maize (transgenic or conventional) associated with maize management techniques. In Southern Brazil’s scenario, the use of GM maize combined with associated agricultural management may be accelerating the loss of diversity in Atlantic Forest areas, and consequently, important ecosystem services provided by dung beetles may be lost.  相似文献

为研究黄河三角洲地区混交人工林土壤细菌群落特征,应用高通量测序技术,比较分析了刺槐臭椿混交林以及臭椿和刺槐纯林土壤细菌结构及多样性,并结合土壤理化性质进行分析。试验结果表明:在细菌门分类水平上,臭椿纯林、刺槐纯林、刺槐臭椿混交林土壤中分别检测出27、25、31门细菌,3种不同林分土壤中酸杆菌门、变形菌门、放线菌门、硝化螺旋菌门、绿弯菌门、浮霉菌门、芽单胞菌门、疣微菌门8种细菌是土壤中的主要细菌群落,其中酸杆菌门、变形菌门和放线菌门为优势细菌群落。不同类型人工林土壤中各门细菌相对丰度差异显著。混交林土壤细菌物种数和Shannon指数值分别为1910和9.1高于两种纯林。通过对土壤主要细菌群落与土壤理化性质进行主成分分析发现,3种不同林分之间在土壤细菌群落结构上有较高程度的分离,差异显著(P < 0.05),有效磷含量与混交林土壤细菌群落有较强的正相关关系。因此可以得出结论,不同林分类型、土壤理化性质和细菌群落结构三者相互影响,刺槐臭椿混交增加了土壤细菌群落多样性,土壤理化性质在一定程度上影响土壤细菌结构和多样性。  相似文献
