In a small north-temperate lake, 53–56% of post-spawning, female white suckers spanning a wide range of ages showed ovarian atresia in 1981 and 1987. Comparison of ovarian atresia frequencies and adult sex ratios in nine white sucker populations indicated that this spawning disorder may have been due to a paucity of males at spawning. Adult female:male sex ratio in the King Lake population was 2.82:1 in 1981 and 2.73:1 in 1987, compared with 0.91:1 to 1.75:1 in populations that exhibited lower resorption frequencies (0–7.1%). Removal of 29% of the King Lake male suckers in 1988 elevated the female: male sex ratio to 3.5:1 and frequency of ovarian atresia rose to 75%. Unspawned ova were almost completely resorbed 3 months after the spring spawning period. Post-spawning mortality was not different between spent and resorbing females. The somatic condition of resorbing and spent females did not differ. There was no evidence that atresia interfered with gamete development subsequently. The sex ratio imbalance present in King Lake was not a function of population density.  相似文献

During the summer of 1975, 285 white suckers (Catostomus commersoni) from 10 localities in southern Ontario were examined for trypanosomes. Trypanosoma catostomi Daly and DeGiusti, 1971 was found in the blood of 11.6% of the fish examined using the haematocrit centrifugation technique. Infected juvenile fish (33%) and infected adult fish (4%) were found in 6 of 10 locations.  相似文献

Summary In situ hybridization procedure with a 32P-labelled synthetic oligonucleotide probe was used to detect corticotropin-releasing factor-encoding messenger RNA (CRF mRNA) in the hypothalamus of the white sucker, Catostomus commersoni. Adjacent sections were immunostained by a sucker CRF-specific antiserum. CRF mRNA-containing neurons were identified by autoradiography in the magnocellular and parvocellular subdivisions of the preoptic nucleus (PON). Many of these neurons were also immunostained by sucker antiserum, showing the same distribution patterns. These results confirm the presence of CRF mRNA and CRF peptide in the white sucker hypothalamus and support the view that the magnocellular and parvocellular neurons of the PON may be involved in the control of adrenocorticotropic hormone secretion from the pituitary in the white sucker.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to characterize the effects of pulp mill effluent on the properties of the sex steroid binding protein (SBP) in the plasma of white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) and longnose sucker (C. catostomus). SBPs which specifically bind estradiol and testosterone with high affinity (k(D) approximately 3 nM) and low capacity (B(max) approximately 73-81 nM) were identified in both species. Subsequent studies determined if the properties of the SBP in white sucker exposed to bleached kraft mill effluent (BKME) at Terrace Bay, ON, and in longnose sucker exposed to BKME at Grande Prairie, AB. differed from appropriate reference fish. There were no effects of BKME exposure on the binding affinity (k(D)) of the SBP in either species, but there was a significant increase in the binding capacity (B(max)) of longnose sucker SBP exposed to BKME. The livers of nai;ve white sucker exposed to effluent at Terrace Bay or a bleached sulfite/groundwood mill in Edmundston, NB, rapidly accumulated compounds of differing hydrophobicity that bound to both the white sucker and goldfish (Carassius auratus) SBP. Conversely, there was reduced accumulation of SBP ligands in the bile of effluent-exposed fish. We have demonstrated that constituents present within pulp mill effluent bind to both the white sucker and goldfish SBP, and that native species residing downstream of pulp mill effluents may experience modifications in the properties of their SBP.  相似文献

Summary The localization of urotensin I has been investigated in the caudal neurosecretory system of the white sucker (Catostomus commersoni). The peptide is present in all the cells of the system both large and small, in the large axons passing to the urophysis, and in fine beaded fibres not only within the urophysis but also in a fine plexus lateral to the large cells in the spinal cord proper. The possibility that the caudal neurosecretory system is not a functionally uniform system but rather a collection of dissimilar cells of different synaptic inputs with a common entity, urotensin I, is discussed. Moreover, the feasibility of a urotensin I feedback loop is described.Financial support for this investigation was provided in part by MRC (Canada). Synopsis The capacity of the juvenile white sucker, Catostomus commersoni, to feed selectively on detritus was examined by analyzing gut contents of fish feeding in a northern Michigan pond and in laboratory aquaria. Suckers selected fine particle detritus. The median length of detritus particles consumed by pond suckers ranged from 26–38 m for all seasons sampled. Although suckers in the pond ingested invertebrates > 215 m they never ingested detritus particles > 215 m. Suckers fed pond detritus in laboratory aquaria selectively ingested the fine particle fraction (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, p < 0.0001). Suckers excluded particles > 220 m and ingested a median particle size of 54 m. Amorphous detritus particles comprised 100% of the detritus particles in 93% of the foreguts analyzed. Suckers fed fine particle (< 45 ) pond detritus in laboratory aquaria rejected the inorganic fraction and selectively ingested organicmaterial with the highest protein and energy content. Ash free dry mass (AFDM) as a percent of dry-mass was 2.6 times greater in the foregut contents than in the detritus (p < 0.001). The amino acid concentration and energy density of the ingested organic matter were 1.9 times higher (p < 0.044) and 1.3 times higher (p < 0.025) than the respective amino acid and energy content of the organic fraction of the detritus. These results indicate that suckers have the capacity to consume selectively fine particle detritus with the highest nutritional value.  相似文献

Concentrations of manganese were determined in the liver, kidney, muscle and bone of white suckers (Catostomus commersoni) from five acid (pH < 5.8), and two circumneutral lakes in south-central Ontario. Manganese tissue concentrations were greater in fish captured from the most acidified lakes with the greatest concentrations of dissolved manganese. These fish had increased concentrations of manganese in the liver, as indicated by a comparison of liver:kidney manganese concentration ratios among the seven fish populations. Tissue concentrations of manganese from all populations either were negatively correlated (P < 0.05) or remained constant with fish size indicating homeostatic regulation of this metal. Manganese concentrations of the benthic fauna were positively correlated to sediment concentrations (R=0.30). Lake sediment manganese concentrations were significantly correlated to maximum lake depth (R=0.80, P < 0.03), with the concentrations in the top 0–1 cm dependent on the redox conditions in the seven lakes. Based on the seven lakes studied, manganese concentrations in the benthic-feeding white sucker correlated better with dissolved manganese, than with either the concentrations in food or surficial sediments.  相似文献

The distribution of stanniocalcin immunoreactivity was examined in the corpuscles of Stannius of the white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) by using a chum salmon stanniocalcin antiserum, Western blotting, and light and electron microscopy. The white sucker possesses at least two stanniocalcin-immunoreactive corpuscles in the most posterior portions of the kidneys. Immunocytochemistry and ultrastructure revealed two cell-types in the corpuscle parenchyma, only one of which was immunoreactive. The nonimmunoreactive cells contained dense-cored vesicles and long processes that extended between the immunoreactive cells and terminated at perivascular spaces. When corpuscle extracts were subjected to electrophoresis and Western blotting, three nonreduced stanniocalcin-like immunoreactive bands (approximately 56, 61, and 64 kDa) were observed. However, in the presence of a reductant, a diffuse band migrating in the range of 28 to 32 kDa was noted. The results of this study on the white sucker demonstrate the presence of a dimeric stanniocalcin-like molecule and present evidence of a previously uncharacterized cell-type in the corpuscles of Stannius.  相似文献

Summary Scotopic visual pigments measured in the creek chub and the white sucker are porphyropsins with mean max values located at 538.3 and 536.5 nm, respectively. There is a shift of the max towards shorter wavelengths during the winter in both of these species coinciding with similar changes in the quality of downwelling light. max is significantly correlated to the P50 and spectrum width of the downwelling light and dissolved oxygen. An analysis of variance shows that there are significant differences between the max values of: fish in the two lakes, fish at different times, the two species at different times and fish in different lakes at different seasons. The offset visual pigments of both species appear to be well adapted to their photic environment in terms of the contrast hypothesis. The levels of DNA adducts in the hepatic tissue of the white sucker fish speciesCatostomus commersoni were determined by32P-postlabelling. The fish were caught at four sites: two sites near the city of Windsor (Québec, Canada) on the St. François River, a downstream tributary of the St. Lawrence River, and two sites in the St. Lawrence River itself, near the city of Montréal (Québec, Canada). The latter sites are known to be contaminated by many pollutants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Total adduct levels in all fish ranged from 25.1–178.0 adducts per 109 nucleotides. White sucker from the selected sites of the St. Lawrence River had a significantly higher mean level of DNA adducts than those of the St. François River (129.4 vs 56.8, respectively). These results suggest that the effluents of many heavy industries (e.g. from a Soderberg aluminium plant) flowing in the St. Lawrence River are more likely to produce genotoxic damage to fish than those released in one of its tributary, and mainly associated to the activities of a small town and a nearby pulp and paper mill.  相似文献

Synopsis A total of 314 white suckers (Catostomus commersoni) taken monthly during May to December 1975 and in April and May 1976 from southern Lake Huron, Ontario, Canada, were examined forCapillaria catostomi.Prevalence determined from fresh white suckers (66%) was significantly lower than from frozen white suckers (81%). However, there was no significant difference in prevalence ofC. catostomi in samples taken at monthly intervals; in male and female white suckers; or in the age categories.Mean intensity of infection was not significantly different in fresh (9.6 [± 13.41]) or frozen (10.4 [± 13.11]) white suckers. There was no significant difference in intensities between monthly samples in male and female white suckers or in the age categories. Suckers were infected with 1–172 worms. The percentage of male, female and immature worms did not change with sex or age of host or by month. The frequency distribution showed the parasites were overdispersed.A possible life cycle forC. catostomi involving an oligochaete intermediate host is discussed and an attempt made to explain the almost constant levels of prevalence and intensity.  相似文献

With fish kept under constant darkness pinealectomy resulted in a significant alteration in period length and decrease in the precision of circadian activity.

Synopsis White suckers,Catastomus commersoni, use olfactory cues to return to the same spawning stream year after year. If we assume that they follow a model similar to the well-known salmon model, olfactory imprinting must occur very early in their development. We describe the time of migration from the nursery stream in relation to the development of the white sucker olfactory system to determine if the requisite anatomical structures are present which would permit imprinting. At hatching the olfactory placode is present and beginning to differentiate, the lumen of the olfactory capsule is starting to form, and the olfactory tract projects into the telencephalon. Larvae migrate approximately 2 weeks later or at a size of 14 mm TL. At this time olfactory cilia are present, the olfactory tract is robust and the telencephalon is beginning to differentiate. Therefore, it appears that the fundamental neural structures necessary for imprinting are present. A comparison with salmon, however, clearly demonstrates that the white sucker olfactory apparatus is not as well developed as that of salmon at time of migration. This raises the question of the ability of white suckers to imprint in the same manner as salmon and whether the salmonid model is applicable to white suckers. Alternative imprinting hypotheses are discussed.  相似文献

We previously reported that the third intron of the X.laevis L1 ribosomal protein gene encodes for a snoRNA called U16. Here we show that four different introns of the same gene contain another previously uncharacterized snoRNA (U18) which is associated with fibrillarin in the nucleolus and which originates by processing of the pre-mRNA. The pathway of U18 RNA release from the pre-mRNA is the same as the one described for U16: primary endonucleolytic cleavages upstream and downstream of the U18 coding region produce a pre-U18 RNA which is subsequently trimmed to the mature form. Both the gene organization and processing of U18 are conserved in the corresponding genes of X.tropicalis and H.sapiens. The L1 gene thus has a composite structure, highly conserved in evolution, in which sequences coding for a ribosomal protein are intermingled with sequences coding for two different snoRNAs. The nucleolar localization of these different components suggests some common function on ribosome biosynthesis.  相似文献

Light and electron microscopic studies of the morphological features of immature and mature rodlet cells in Catostomus commersoni are presented emphasizing the cells' association with epithelial tissues. The peripheral fibrillar layer is lacking from the apex and from the base of the cell. A cytoplasmic extension from the base may be a feeding mechanism whereby the rodlet cell obtains nutrient at the expense of adjacent cells leaving intercellular spaces often containing myelin figures. RNAase digestion studies demonstrate the presence of RNA in the electron dense rodlet core.
The structure and histochemistry of the rodlets which do not appear to disintegrate upon expulsion from the cell are compared to the cytoplasmic inclusions of both normal fish cells and protozoan parasites. The possible association of the rodlet cell with various pathological conditions is briefly reviewed and the authors conclude that it is premature to disregard the possibility that this cell could be a parasite or infective agent.  相似文献
