The paper considers the diagnostic capacities of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting non-organic bulky masses of the retroperitoneal space. Based on the analysis of tomographic findings in 23 patients with non-organic cysts of the retroperitoneal space and 27 patients with its abscesses and phlegmons, the first part of the paper describes the MRI semiotics of these diseases in detail and proposes methodic approaches to their identification. Comparison of the data of MRI and pathomorphological analysis of operation materials has yielded the rates of sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the method, which are equal to 100, 88.5, and 94.2% for non-organic cysts and 100, 87.1, and 93.5%, respectively. The authors note the lower efficiency of MRI in recognizing hydatid cysts and foreign bodies than ultrasound study and X-ray computed tomography and show it necessary to take into account clinical information in making a radiological conclusion.  相似文献

X-rays and CT have been used to examine specimens such as human remains, mummies and formalin-fixed specimens. However, CT has not been used to study formalin-fixed wet specimens within their containers. The purpose of our study is firstly to demonstrate the role of CT as a non-destructive imaging method for the study of wet pathological specimens and secondly to use the CT data as a method for teaching pathological and radiological correlation. CT scanning of 31 musculoskeletal specimens from a pathology museum was carried out. Images were reconstructed using both soft-tissue and bone algorithms. Further processing of the data produced coronal and sagittal reformats of each specimen. The container and storage solution were manually removed using Volume Viewer Voxtool software to produce a 3D reconstruction of each specimen. Photographs of each specimen (container and close-up) were displayed alongside selected coronal, sagittal, 3D reconstructions and cine sequences in a specially designed computer program. CT is a non-destructive imaging modality for building didactic materials from wet specimens in a Pathology Museum, for teaching radiological and pathological correlation.  相似文献

The substantial complexity in ecosystem–radionuclide interactions is difficult to be represented in terms of radiological doses. Thus, radiological dose assessment tools use typical exposure situations for generalized organisms and ecosystems. In the present study, site-specific data and radioactivity measurements of terrestrial organisms (grass and herbivore mammals) and abiotic components (soil) are provided. The retrieved data are used in combination with the ERICA Assessment Tool for calculation of radiological parameters. The process of radionuclide transfer within ecosystem components is represented using concentration ratios (CRs), while for the calculation of dose rates the dose conversion coefficient (DCC) methodology is applied. Comparative assessments are performed between the generic and assessment-specific radiological parameters and between the resulting dose rates. Significant differences were observed between CRs calculated in this study and those reported in the literature for cesium and thorium, which can easily be explained. On the other hand, CRs calculated for radium are in very good agreement with those reported in the literature. The DCCs exhibited some small differences between the reference and the assessment-specific organism due to mass differences. The differences were observed for internal and external dose rates, but they were less pronounced for total dose rates which are typically used in the assessment of radiological impact. The results of the current work can serve as a basis for further studies of the radiological parameters in environments that have not been studied yet.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study how the cervical spine is assessed before discontinuation of cervical spine immobilisation in unconscious trauma patients in intensive care units. DESIGN: Telephone interview of consultants responsible for adult intensive care units. SETTING: All 25 intensive care units in the South and West region that admit victims of major trauma. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The clinical and radiological basis on which the decision is made to stop cervical spine immobilisation in unconscious patients with trauma. RESULTS: In 19 units cervical spine immobilisation was stopped in unconscious patients on the basis of radiology alone, and six units combined radiology with clinical examination after the patient had regained consciousness. Sixteen units relied on a normal lateral radiological view of the cervical spine alone, five required a normal lateral and anteroposterior view, and four required a normal lateral, anteroposterior, and open mouth peg view. CONCLUSIONS: There are inconsistencies in the clinical and radiological approach to assessing the cervical spine in unconscious patients with trauma before the removal of immobilisation precautions. There is an overreliance on the lateral cervical spine view alone, which has been shown to be insensitive in this setting.  相似文献

The evolution of analytic formulas for characterizing the ultraviolet spectral ir-radiance penetrating to the ground is briefly described. Analytic spectral functions for the extraterrestrial solar spectral irradiance, the ozone absorption coefficient, Rayleigh scattering coefficients and aerosol scattering and absorption coefficients, which are used as basic inputs, are given. With Beer's law, these give immediately the direct solar spectral irradiance. A ratio technique described in quantitative detail gives a procedure for calculating the skylight component of the UV radiation reaching the ground. The influence of ground reflectivity, clouds and a possible connection between photobiology and radiological physics are discussed. Finally the advantages of multiwavelength monitoring are described, using monochromators similar to those used in satellite ozone sounding to serve the needs of the photobiology and the atmospheric science communities.  相似文献

Agreement between radiological and clinical diagnosis and the incidence of unexpected findings has been used as an indicator of the diagnostic contribution of radiology. The overall incidence of agreement was 33% — 533 out of 1,604 x-ray examinations. The wide variation in agreement in different radiological examinations is clearly related to the pathological nature of disease and the limitations of radiological techniques. If diagnostic radiology is to be effective its application rather than interpretation in the clinical situation must be emphasized in training programmes.  相似文献

Objectives

Sexuality is an essential aspect of human function, well-being and quality of life. Many people have sex without complications. However, there are some people who need to seek emergency medical help for related health problems. The aim of this study was to present a first overview of patients who received a radiological examination related to sexual intercourse based emergency department admission.

Methods

Our centralized electronic patient record database was reviewed for patients who had been admitted to our emergency department with an emergency after sexual intercourse between 2000 and 2011. The database was scanned for the standardized key words ‘sexual intercourse’ or ‘coitus’ retrospectively. For all patients identified in the electronic patient record database the radiological examinations were searched for manually in our Radiology Information System, and reviewed by three independent radiologists.

Results

One hundred and twenty nine out of 445 (29,0%) patients received a radiological examination after immediate emergency department admission related to sexual intercourse. Fifty two out of 129 (40.3%) patients had positive radiological findings while 77 (59.7%) did not. Eighty point seven percent (n = 42) of the radiological findings were a sexual intercourse-associated pathology and 19.2% (n = 10) were considered to be incidental findings. Age and male sex positively correlated with radiological imaging workup (p<0.001, respectively p<0.037). The most common sexual intercourse-associated pathology was headache attributed to cerebrovascular insult (n = 21, 40.3%) followed by epididymitis (n = 7, 16.6%) and obstructive uropathy (n = 5, 11.6%). Of the patients with headache attributed to non-traumatic intracranial hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage (n = 14, 66.6%) was the most common, followed by intracerebral bleeding (n = 4, 19.0%) and one subdural hemorrhage.

Conclusions

Pathological findings are manifold. Cerebral imaging is the most common type of radiological imaging performed. Further prospective and standardized studies should be performed to better evaluate the significance of radiological imaging in this patient collective with the aim to gain better knowledge on what patients profit from what type of radiological imaging when presenting with a sexual intercourse related emergency.

In 1997, the French Ministries of the Environment and Health commissioned a detailed radioecological analysis of the Nord-Cotentin region in response to public concern about radiological risks associated with local nuclear facilities. This work was entrusted to the Groupe Radioécologie Nord-Cotentin (GRNC), a working group of experts from various origins (industrial facilities operators, public institutions, monitoring agencies, public interest and citizens groups, foreign experts). An epidemiology investigation in 1995 had reported an excess of two radiation-induced leukemia cases in an area near a nuclear reprocessing plant, a finding that attracted great interest in France, and which stimulated the need for further investigation. After the publication of its report in 1999, the GRNC was again commissioned to perform, inter alia, a corresponding assessment on the chemical releases of the local nuclear facilities. This second stage is now achieved and has revealed important similarities as well as some important differences between radiological and chemical risk assessments when applied to the specific case of the Nord-Cotentin nuclear facilities. Due to the considerable amount of work and results of the GRNC, the purpose for this article is to briefly describe the main developments of the risk assessment methodology followed by the GRNC in both cases, to detail some of the main results and to identify and explain, at each step, the similarities and the differences. This was an in vitro and in vivo study to develop a novel artificial cervical vertebra and intervertebral complex (ACVC) joint in a goat model to provide a new method for treating degenerative disc disease in the cervical spine. The objectives of this study were to test the safety, validity, and effectiveness of ACVC by goat model and to provide preclinical data for a clinical trial in humans in future. We designed the ACVC based on the radiological and anatomical data on goat and human cervical spines, established an animal model by implanting the ACVC into goat cervical spines in vitro prior to in vivo implantation through the anterior approach, and evaluated clinical, radiological, biomechanical parameters after implantation. The X-ray radiological data revealed similarities between goat and human intervertebral angles at the levels of C2-3, C3-4, and C4-5, and between goat and human lordosis angles at the levels of C3-4 and C4-5. In the in vivo implantation, the goats successfully endured the entire experimental procedure and recovered well after the surgery. The radiological results showed that there was no dislocation of the ACVC and that the ACVC successfully restored the intervertebral disc height after the surgery. The biomechanical data showed that there was no significant difference in range of motion (ROM) or neural zone (NZ) between the control group and the ACVC group in flexion-extension and lateral bending before or after the fatigue test. The ROM and NZ of the ACVC group were greater than those of the control group for rotation. In conclusion, the goat provides an excellent animal model for the biomechanical study of the cervical spine. The ACVC is able to provide instant stability after surgery and to preserve normal motion in the cervical spine.  相似文献

By using the CT images obtained by subtracting two CT images acquired under the same conditions and slice locations, we have devised a method for detecting streak artifacts in non-uniform regions and only radiological noise components in CT images. A chest phantom was scanned using 16- and 64-multidetector row helical CT scanners with various mAs values at 120 kVp. The upper lung slice image was employed as a target image for evaluating the streak artifacts and radiological noise. One hundred parallel line segments with a length of 80 pixels were placed on the subtracted CT image, and the largest CT value in each CT value profile was employed as a feature variable of the streak artifacts; these feature variables were analyzed with the extreme value theory (Gumbel distribution). To detect only the radiological noise, all CT values contained in the 100 line profile were plotted on normal probability paper and the standard deviation was estimated from the inclination of its fitted line for the CT value plots. The two detection methods devised in this study were able to evaluate the streak artifacts and radiological noise in the CT images with high accuracy.  相似文献

A radiological study of the developing dentition of the domestic albino ferret has revealed the presence of four upper and three lower deciduous functionless incisor teeth in each half of the jaw. The presence of the additional upper incisor tooth can only be accounted for in two ways:
(1) It arose as the result of a gene mutation within the closed colony.

Xanthomatous infiltration of tendons is a clinical feature common to many cases of hyperlipidemia. The xanthomas can be detected and only grossly assessed by palpation. This report describes a radiological technique used to assess these lesions at the Achilles tendon level. The “mammography technique” applied to the study of Achilles tendons was used in 32 normolipemic subjects and 32 hyperlipidemic patients. Both tendons could be observed in their entire length and their thickness, greatly increased in xanthomatosis, could be accurately measured. The results of this survey suggest that the radiological approach may provide a useful tool for the routine evaluation and follow-up of tendon xanthomas.  相似文献

A study of the environmental radioactivity in the Kopa?ki Rit Nature Park, Croatia, is presented. This wildlife reserve is part of the Middle Danube River Basin, and it is exposed to various pollutants due to a number of human activities in the surroundings, where there is a nuclear power plant and also urban centres and areas of intense agricultural production. Results for the activity concentrations of soil and surface water samples do not indicate any elevated radioactivity level, which is confirmed by on-site measurements of ambient dose rate equivalent. An assessment of the radiological load on the local biota, carried out using the ERICA tool, implies an overall low radiological risk even if conservative values of the risk quotient are used. Therefore, human activities do not have a significant effect on the radiological load on the Kopa?ki Rit area. A similar conclusion might be made with regard to numerous similar environments in the Middle Danube River Basin.  相似文献

Recent advances in radiological and serological techniques have enabled easier preoperative diagnosis of sparganosis. However, due to scarcity of cases, sparganosis has been often regarded as a disease of other etiologic origin unless the parasite is confirmed in the lesion. We experienced a case of sparganosis mimicking a varicose vein in terms of clinical manifestations and radiological findings. Sparganosis should be included among the list of differential diagnosis with the varicose vein.  相似文献

Abstract

Osteoporosis is a disease that is characterized by deterioration of bone tissue and increased risk of fracture as it leads to a decrease in bone mineral density, which is an important public health problem. Today, bone mineral density is measured by radiological techniques. Alternative techniques are needed because of the disadvantages such as excessive radiation intake, the cost of radiological techniques, and the necessity for specialist personnel for the devices. The quantitative determination of biochemical markers that play a role in bone mineralization may be a good alternative for the osteoporosis diagnosis and especially in the follow-up of treatment.

In this study, a specific and sensitive immunological biosensor, which quantitatively determines the osteocalcin molecule, has been developed to be used in the early osteoporosis diagnosis and to evaluate the response to the drug treatment. Anti-osteocalcin antibody was immobilized onto gold electrode surface via covalent immobilization method by using 6-mercaptohexanol, 1,4-butanedioldiglycidyl ether, ethanolamine, and glutaraldehyde. Immobilization steps and biosensor characterization were specified by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The detection time and range of Ocn biosensor were determined as 45?min and 10–60?pg µL?1 Ocn concentration, respectively. The Ocn biosensor was successfully applied in artificial serum samples spiked with Ocn.  相似文献

As part of a study on the ingestion and organ content of some trace elements of importance in radiological protection, additional work has been undertaken to acquire improved reference values for cesium, iodine, strontium, thorium, and uranium in four selected reference materials provided by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. The materials are SRM-1548 Total Diet, SRM-1548a Typical Diet, SRM-1486 Bone Meal, and RM-8414 Bovine Muscle. A coordinated study was undertaken with the help of seven selected laboratories in five countries. Instrumental and radiochemical neutron activation analysis and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry were the analytical main techniques used.  相似文献

Luminol‐amplified chemiluminescence was generated by alveolar macrophages, harvested from the bronchoalveolar lavages of 16 patients with different radiological stages of non‐invasive (asymptomatic) sarcoidosis. None of the patients received any steroid therapy during this study. The mean duration of the disease in these patients was 8 months, with a duration time range of 6–14 months. Six patients were in radiological stage 1, five in radiological stage 2 and five in radiological stage 3. Alveolar macrophages from bronchoalveolar lavages of eight healthy non‐smoking volunteers were used as controls. All alveolar macrophages were stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate. A significant decrease was recorded in the intensity of chemiluminescence generated by the phorbol‐ester‐stimulated alveolar macrophages obtained from patients with sarcoidosis of radiological stages 1 and 2, as compared to the cells collected from healthy individuals (controls). No decrease was recorded in the chemiluminescence generated by stimulated alveolar macrophages collected from patients with radiological stage 3, or from unstimulated alveolar macrophages of any patient. These results provide us with an indicative tool, which might enable us to differentiate, on a functional basis, between the activities of alveolar macrophages in non‐active sarcoidosis. Determination of anti-citrullinated peptides (anti-CCP) specificity as a predictor of joint erosive changes, correlation between their serum level and radiological damages as well as disease activity score (DAS28). A trial has been conducted on a 211 patient sample fulfilling ACR criteria for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). There was assigned anti-CCP serum level, disease activity score by the formula for DAS28(3)-CRP and assessed radiological changes degree after Steinbrocker score. In 132 patient (62.559%) the serum anti-CCP concentration was positive for RA. Specificity of the test was 100% and sensitivity 65% (Z = 0.731, p = 0.465). There is a medium intensity correlation between variables representing anti-CCP and Steinbrocker score. Pearson's coefficient was 0.479 and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was 0.614, i.e. statistically significant (p = 0.000). There is no statistically significant correlation between variables representing anti-CCP and DAS28(3)-CRP Anti-CCP are good RA predictor and their concentration correlate with radiological damages degree.  相似文献
