Haemolymph pressure has been measured in the mantle sinus of several balanomorph barnacles and the peduncular sinus of two lepadomorph species. The absolute pressure of balanomorphs was found to be similar to that recorded for other crustaceans. The absolute pressure of lepadomorphs was much higher than that in balanomorphs. Regular puls̀e pressures were synchronized with body movements, cirral extension and valve movement. It is concluded that haemolymph is circulated by general body movements even when the opercular/capitular valves are closed.  相似文献

Newly hatched stage I–II nauplii of Balanus improvisus (Darwin) were “totally starved” (until death) or “partially starved” for the first 48 h and 96 h of their development. Daily mortality and molting were monitored throughout larval development in both starved and fed control groups. Fed control animals exhibited a largely synchronous molting pattern with instars of equal duration. Total starvation suppressed molting beyond stage II; 50% mortality occurred in ≈4 days at both 15 and 21 °C, while longest survival time was 7 days at 15 °C and 6 days at 21 °C. At 15 °C, partially starved nauplii retained the ability to complete naupliar development but at a slower overall rate and with increased mortality relative to controls. These effects were more pronounced in the 96-h group. Increased mortality of stage VI nauplii was evident in both partially starved groups (7.1% for 48 h, 18.8% for 96 h) relative to unstarved controls (3.1%). Stage II nauplii exhibited little resistance to starvation and survival potential may have decreased as soon as 24 h.  相似文献

Southern Australia is currently divided into three marine biogeographical provinces based on faunal distributions and physical parameters. These regions indicate eastern and western distributions, with an overlap occurring in the Bass Strait in Victoria. However, studies indicate that the boundaries of these provinces vary depending on the species being examined, and in particular on the mode of development employed by that species, be they direct developers or planktonic larvae dispersers. Mitochondrial DNA sequence analysis of the surf barnacle Catomerus polymerus in southern Australia revealed an east-west phylogeographical split involving two highly divergent clades (cytochrome oxidase I 3.5 +/- 0.76%, control region 6.7 +/- 0.65%), with almost no geographical overlap. Spatial genetic structure was not detected within either clade, indicative of a relatively long-lived planktonic larval phase. Five microsatellite loci indicated that C. polymerus populations exhibit relatively high levels of genetic divergence, and fall into four subregions: eastern Australia, central Victoria, western Victoria and Tasmania, and South Australia. F(ST) values between eastern Australia (from the eastern mitochondrial DNA clade) and the remaining three subregions ranged from 0.038 to 0.159, with other analyses indicating isolation by distance between the subregions of western mitochondrial origin. We suggest that the east-west division is indicative of allopatric divergence resulting from the emergence of the Bassian land-bridge during glacial maxima, preventing gene flow between these two lineages. Subsequently, contemporary ecological conditions, namely the East Australian, Leeuwin, and Zeehan currents and the geographical disjunctions at the Coorong and Ninety Mile Beach are most likely responsible for the four subregions indicated by the microsatellite data.  相似文献

The morphology and setation of mouth appendages (trophi) are investigated with scanning electron microscopy in the balanomorph barnacles Semibalanus balanoides, Balanus balanusand B. nubilusand in the pedunculate barnacles Pollicipes polymerus, P. cornucopiaand Lepas anatifera. It is difficult to uphold a clearcut distinction between denticles and setae and several types of setae also intergrade with each other. The trophi of Pollicipes polymerusand P. cornucopiahave the most ‘generalized’ morphology. The palps of Pollicipesand L. anatiferaare simpler than those in balanomorphs and carry a single type of seta. In L. anatiferathe mandibles and maxillules are adapted to a semi-predatory feeding habit by carrying large, pointed teeth, but this species lacks the foliate-serrate setae which populate the palps in the other species studied. Compared with Pollicipesand Lepas, the three balanomorphs have palps with a complex setation. The trophi in S. balanoidesdiffer from the two species of Balanusin numerous features of setation and denticulation, notably in having the palps populated by plumodenticulate setae homologous to purely denticulated types in Balanus. It is suggested that SEM studies of barnacle trophi will provide characters of use in estimating phylogeny.  相似文献

The small honeycomb barnacle Chamaesipho tasmanica occurs in patches at high levels on exposed rocky shores, but often carpets the substratum at mid-shore levels of sheltered shores in south-eastern Australia. Studies of larval supply from 1990 to 1993 and concurrent monitoring of settlement from 1991 to 1993 revealed that larval arrival and settlement were typified by trickles of larvae from late July to December (although some were observed in January and February). Major pulses of arriving cyprids were also recorded once or twice each year. While local patterns of water-flow had no impact on numbers of larvae arriving, major peaks of larval arrival were always associated with strong southerly winds during new and full moons. There was a consistent spatial pattern of larval supply; more larvae were always caught in one area low on the shore. Numbers of larvae caught were, however, very sporadic within a given year and very variable from one year to the next. While the different numbers of cyprids in different places cannot be explained by cyprids arriving first on lower parts of the shore, longer periods of submersion nor aggregations of larvae in the plankton, recurrent patterns of arrival of larvae suggest that local site-specific characteristics have an influence on the demography of populations of this species. Variations in numbers of larvae arriving were responsible for the variations in distributions of juveniles on the substratum.  相似文献

One widely documented phenological response to climate change is the earlier occurrence of spring‐breeding events. While such climate change‐driven shifts in phenology are common, their consequences for individuals and populations have rarely been investigated. I addressed this gap in our knowledge by using a multi‐year observational study of six wood frog (Rana sylvatica) populations near the southern edge of their range. I tested first if winter temperature or precipitation affected the date of breeding and female fecundity, and second if timing of breeding affected subsequent larval development rate, mass at metamorphosis, date of metamorphosis, and survival. Warmer winters were associated with earlier breeding but reduced female fecundity. Winter precipitation did not affect breeding date, but was positively associated with female fecundity. There was no association between earlier breeding and larval survival or mass at metamorphosis, but earlier breeding was associated with delayed larval development. The delay in larval development was explained through a counterintuitive correlation between breeding date and temperature during larval development. Warmer winters led to earlier breeding, which in turn was associated with cooler post‐breeding temperatures that slowed larval development. The delay in larval development did not fully compensate for the earlier breeding, such that for every 2 days earlier that breeding took place, the average date of metamorphosis was 1 day earlier. Other studies have found that earlier metamorphosis is associated with increased postmetamorphic growth and survival, suggesting that earlier breeding has beneficial effects on wood frog populations.  相似文献

Patterns of winter irruptions in several owl species apparently follow the ‘lack of food’ hypothesis, which predicts that individuals leave their breeding grounds in search of food when prey populations do not allow breeding and are too small to ensure survival. Recent analyses, however, suggest an alternative mechanism dubbed the ‘breeding success’ hypothesis, which predicts that winter irruptions might instead be the result of a very successful breeding season, with a large pool of young birds subsequently migrating south from the breeding grounds. Here we assessed age‐class (juvenile vs. non‐juvenile) composition of winter irruptive Snowy Owls Bubo scandiacus over a 25‐year period (winter 1991–1992 to 2015–2016) between regular (North American Prairies and Great Plains) and irregular wintering areas (northeastern North America) using live‐trapped individuals and high‐resolution images of individual owls. Our results show that the proportion of juveniles (birds less than 1 year of age) varies considerably annually but is positively correlated with irruption intensity in both regions. In irregular wintering areas, it can constitute the majority (up to more than 90%) of winter irruptive Snowy Owls over a large geographical area. These results are consistent with the idea that large winter irruptions at temperate latitudes are not the result of adults massively leaving the Arctic in search of food after a breeding failure but are more likely to be a consequence of good reproductive conditions in the Arctic that create a large pool of winter migrants.  相似文献

Most models on settlement of open marine invertebrate populations are based on space-limitation. These models, however, do not recognise that free space may not drive the demography of populations when larval numbers are small or when larval supply varies along a gradient in the habitat. They also do not incorporate the effects of larval choice when settling. It has been hypothesised that, in gregarious barnacles, the effects of adult conspecifics, rather than available free space, may play a primary role in settlement. That is, cues from adults along perimeters of patches, rather than space available, may enhance colonisation. This study therefore aimed to distinguish between these separate influences on populations of Chamaesipho tasmanica, a gregarious barnacle characterised by relatively few larvae arriving to settle each year. Patches of 6, 3 and 1.5 cm diameter were cleared within aggregations of barnacles at three heights (Low, Mid, Upper) of Chamaesipho's distribution at two sites and during 2 years of settlement. Total numbers of settlers in each year were manipulated to determine the separate influences on settlement due to availability of substratum or the effects of conspecific adults. To test for the effects of available free space, numbers of settlers per unit area were analysed. To test for gregarious effects due to the presence of adults, numbers of settlers per unit perimeter were analysed. While available substratum was found not to affect settlement of this barnacle, gregarious settlement in response to adults at perimeters of patches was thought to be confounded by differential larval supply and differential conspecific cues among heights on the shore. Results from this study therefore have important implications for survival of gregarious populations following disturbances, especially in species where larval supply is poor.  相似文献

Patterns of breeding frequency of White-headed Pterodroma lessoni, Great-winged Pterodroma macroptera, White-chinned Procellaria aequinoctialis and Grey Petrels Proceharia cinerea have been studied at Kerguelen and Crozet Islands. The White-headed Petrel (summer breeder) followed an essentially biennial cycle with only 13% of successful individuals breeding again the next year. On the other hand, the Great-winged Petrel (winter breeder) was mainly an annual breeder with 78% of successful birds breeding again the next year. Both White-chinned (summer breeder) and Grey Petrels (winter breeder) showed a higher breeding frequency than Pterodroma species, with 91% and 93%, respectively, of successful birds returning to breed the following season. These contrasting patterns may be related to the timing of energetic constraints encountered during the interbreeding period, principally the moult and the restoration of breeding condition. It is suggested that these post-breeding constraints are more marked in winter and in oceanic waters, leading to breeding frequencies being lower than in summer and in neritic waters. The intermediate patterns of breeding frequency found in the Great-winged Petrel (mainly annual) and the White-headed Petrel (mainly biennial) show that among Procellariiformes there is a continuum between annual and strictly biennial species.  相似文献

During the northern winter, Palaearctic migrant species are not evenly distributed within sub-Saharan Africa. Species numbers are greatest in a belt of savannah, lying south of the Sahara, and decline southwards. For any one latitude, species numbers are also greater in the east of Africa than in the west. Only about 3% of 187 species winter exclusively south of the equator, but other species migrate from north to south during the course of the northern winter.
For 62 Palaearctic species which winter entirely in Africa, the areas of breeding and wintering ranges are strongly correlated. With some exceptions, species with the largest breeding ranges also have the largest wintering ranges. However, in 69% of species, the breeding range is larger than the wintering range, whereas in 31% of species the wintering range is larger. On average, the wintering ranges of 57 landbird species cover about two-thirds the area of their breeding ranges, and in many species only parts of the wintering range may be occupied at any one time. This implies that the per area carrying capacity of African wintering areas is greater than that of Eurasian breeding areas.
The general correlation between the sizes of breeding and wintering ranges may have its basis in ecology, with generalists able to occupy wider areas than specialists in both breeding and winter quarters. At the same time, the correlation may result partly from an effect of numbers on range size, in that species which have a wide range at one time of the year may then achieve large numbers which occupy a wide range at the other time of year.  相似文献

Larvae of Carcinus maenas L. were reared in the laboratory and temperature-dependent stage durations of successive instars were examined at 12, 15, 18, and 25°C. Feeding rates (FR), in numbers of newly hatched Artemia nauplii, biomass, and energy consumed by a single crab larva during 24 h, were measured daily through the moulting cycles of all larval stages at the four temperatures. Dry weight (DW) and elemental content of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and hydrogen (H) were analysed in newly hatched (0 h) and 1-day-old (24 h) Artemia nauplii at six temperatures (6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 25°C). Due to a 24 h feeding regime, the temperature dependent “mean nutritive value” of newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii is defined, individual biomass (DW, C, N, H) and energy (Joule) 12 h after hatching. General figures in changing individual daily FR, and temperature-dependent peculiarities are discussed. The total amount of food ingested by successive larval instars increases exponentially, while the increasing cumulative quantity consumed by individual crab larvae on successive days of development is described by power functions. At higher temperatures significantly less absolute biomass and energy is consumed during the entire larval development. C. maenas megalops are the main energy consumers in larval life, contributing 41 to 67% (12 to 25°C) to the total larval energy intake between hatching and metamorphosis. Larval ability to adapt to increasing metabolic costs for maintenance in higher water temperatures is discussed with average daily feeding rates (AFR). Improved efficiencies are presented for the cumulative larval energy budget, 31% in assimilation, and 4.4% in gross growth (K1).  相似文献

Long‐lived animals sometimes skip one or more breeding seasons; however, little is known about their movements and activities during such ‘sabbatical’ periods. Here we present novel data on year‐round movements and activities of two male black‐tailed gulls Larus crassirostris during a sabbatical year. We compare the data with those in a year when they bred and with those of two other breeding males. The year‐round migration routes of two sabbatical males were consistent with those of the breeding males: they returned to the breeding area but did not visit the colony in the sabbatical year. They landed more frequently on water (a potential index of foraging effort) during the non‐breeding autumn and winter prior to the sabbatical year than before breeding. Sabbatical gulls may forage more intensively to recover body condition immediately after breeding.  相似文献

In northwest Massachusetts, black-capped chickadees shifted foraging groups repeatedly each day during the winter. As a result, there was no clear distinction between flock members and floaters, but instead a continuous gradation from birds that formed relatively stable associations to those that shifted groups more frequently. Group territories were absent and individual territories were at most poorly defended, if present at all. This picture differs from other recently studied populations, where flock membership is stable and flock territories are clear. Comparison with other populations indicates that winter social structure in the black-capped chickadee may be sensitive to both winter food levels and the proportion of year-round residents. This indicates that cost-benefit analyses of winter social organization should consider factors acting throughout the year as well as the residence status of the wintering birds. The data suggest that flock size, population density and home range size are sensitive to winter food on the study area, whereas territoriality and flock cohesion may respond more clearly to the local availability of breeding resources or the proportion of year-round residents.  相似文献

Summary The development of eggs and nauplii was studied over 19 days. At 1.5°C nauplii hatched after 5 days. Abdominal spines changed their appearance successively during nauplius development, but no moulting was observed in the course of naupliar development. Moulting occurred between the nauplius and the metanauplius stage 13 days after spawning. Swimming activity was weak in the nauplius, while it was vigorous in the metanauplius. A model is presented for the depth distribution of eggs and larval stages. It is also suggested that present collection techniques may inadequately sample eggs and nauplii based on experiments that show that eggs are extremely sensitive to sieving.  相似文献

ACarcinus maenas population inhabiting the Schlei, a glacial fjord of the Baltic Sea, was studied during a three-year period of at least monthly sampling. Due to slightly higher water temperatures in the Schlei (c. 1 °C higher than in the neighbouring waters of the western Baltic Sea) annual larval development starts there one month earlier. When in some years salinities are unfavourable (<13), larval development may be almost completely prevented. Juveniles and adults tolerate changing salinities, even though females prefer staying in deep waters and juveniles in shallow waters of high salinities. During winter all crabs move to deeper waters and stay huddled together in crevices and holes until March or April. Females usually moult after being fertilized, which takes place after the breeding season in August. Males moult between May and June; juveniles continue to moult during the warm season. Moulting for growth lasts until puberty is reached in the second year. From then on intermoult periods are more extended, but males moult more frequently than females, attaining ultimately a larger size. Under favourable environmental conditions, the maximum lifespan ofC. maenas in the Schlei amounts to five years. During this period, five larval moults and about fifteen moults for growth occur.  相似文献

Patterns of co-occurrences of Boeckella and Calamoeciafound in Western Australia are documented. Patterns are analyzed inrelation to size of organisms and to geographical distributions oforganisms. Deviations from randomness in the number ofmulti-species assemblages suggest that biotic interactionsinfluence co-occurrences, but size relationships in severalco-occurring pairs indicate that competition for resources is nota factor influencing co-occurrence. Laboratory experimentsdemonstrate that the large Boeckella triarticulata consumesimmature stages of the small Calamoecia tasmanica butprovides a partial refuge for C. tasmanica when theplanktivorous fish Gambusia, which consumes Boeckellamore rapidly than Calamoecia, is present. These resultsindicate that co-occurrence patterns may be related to theintensity of predation by fish: in the absence of fish predation,Boeckella can prevent invasion of Calamoecia, whilemoderate predation by fish will reduce Boeckella density, consequently allowing Calamoecia to invade.  相似文献

1.?Studies examining changes in the scheduling of breeding in response to climate change have focused on species with well-defined breeding seasons. Species exhibiting year-round breeding have received little attention and the magnitudes of any responses are unknown. 2.?We investigated phenological data for an enclosed feral population of cattle (Bos taurus L.) in northern England exhibiting year-round breeding. This population is relatively free of human interference. 3.?We assessed whether the timing of births had changed over the last 60 years, in response to increasing winter and spring temperatures, changes in herd density, and a regime of lime fertilisation. 4.?Median birth date became earlier by 1·0 days per year. Analyses of the seasonal distribution of calving dates showed that significantly fewer calves were born in summer (decline from 44% of total births to 20%) and significantly more in winter (increase from 12% to 30%) over the study period. The most pronounced changes occurred in winter, with significant increases in both the proportion and number of births. Winter births arise from conceptions in the previous spring, and we considered models that investigated climate and weather variables associated with the winter preceding and the spring of conceptions. 5.?The proportion of winter births was higher when the onset of the plant growing season was earlier during the spring of conceptions. This relationship was much weaker during years when the site had been fertilised with lime, suggesting that increased forage biomass was over-riding the impacts of changing plant phenology. When the onset of the growing season was late, winter births increased with female density. 6.?Recruitment estimates from a stage-structured state-space population model were significantly negatively correlated with the proportion of births in the preceding winter, suggesting that calves born in winter are less likely to survive than those born in other seasons. 7.?This is one of the first studies to document changes in the phenology of a year-round breeder, suggesting that the impact of climate on the scheduling of biological events may be more extensive than previously thought and that impacts may be negative, even for species with relatively flexible breeding strategies.  相似文献
