When the maternal environment is a good predictor of the offspring environment, maternal glucocorticoid (GC) levels might serve to pre-program offspring to express certain phenotypes or life-history characteristics that will increase their fitness. We conducted a field study to assess the effects of naturally occurring maternal GC levels on their offspring in yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris) subjected to different predator pressures. Maternal fecal corticosteroid metabolites (FCM) were positively correlated with predator pressure. Predators had both direct and indirect effects on pups. We found that older mothers with higher FCM levels had smaller and female-biased litters. Moreover, sons from older mothers with high FCM levels dispersed significantly more than those from older mothers with low FCM levels, whereas the opposite pattern was found in pups from younger mothers. These age-related effects may permit females to make adaptive decisions that increase their pups' fitness according to their current situation.  相似文献

Maternal effects can have significant and long-term consequences on offspring behavior and survival, while consistent individual differences (i.e., personality) can have profound impacts on individual fitness. Thus, both can influence population dynamics. However, the underlying mechanisms that determine variation in personality traits are poorly understood. Maternal effects are one potential mechanism that may explain personality variation. We capitalized on a long-term study of yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris) to identify maternal effects on juvenile docility. To do so, we partitioned the variance in juvenile docility using a quantitative genetic modeling approach to isolate potential maternal effects. We also directly tested whether maternal stress, measured through fecal glucocorticoid metabolite levels during lactation of 82 mothers, was associated with offspring docility. Docility scores were estimated for 645 juveniles trapped between 2002 and 2012. We found an interaction between maternal glucocorticoid levels and dam age on juvenile docility. We also found significant maternal, litter, permanent environment, and year effects. These results suggest that a mother's life history stage interacts with stress to influence offspring personality. This early life influence can have long lasting effects on an individual's docility throughout life.  相似文献

Determining the factors associated with the naturalization of alien species is a central theme in ecology. Here, we tested the usefulness of a metric for quantifying Grime's seminal concept of adaptive strategies – competitors, stress‐tolerators and ruderals (CSR) – to explain plant naturalizations worldwide. Using a global dataset of 3004 vascular plant species, and accounting for phylogenetic relatedness and species’ native biomes, we assessed the associations between calculated C‐, S‐ and R‐scores and naturalization success for species exhibiting different life forms. Across different plant life forms, C‐scores were positively and S‐scores negatively associated with both the probability of naturalization and the number of regions where the species has naturalized. R‐scores had positive effects on the probability of naturalization. These effects of the scores were, however, weak to absent for tree species. Our findings demonstrate the utility of CSR‐score calculation to broadly represent, and potentially explain, the naturalization success of plant species.  相似文献

Yellow-bellied marmots, Marmota flaviventris, are obligate hibernators with a relatively short active season. Animals born earlier in the season have higher chances of fulfilling the energetic requirements to survive the long winter. Therefore, the onset of breeding should have a profound impact on juvenile survival. However, there are different ways to compensate for a late start. Late breeders might allocate more resources to late born offspring, making up for the bad start, or juveniles might show compensatory growth. They are not exclusive hypotheses and both can lead to juveniles entering hibernation with a similar body condition. We used data from a long term study in and around the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Colorado to test these two hypotheses. Animals are individually marked and trapped regularly. We compared mass at weaning, mass at the end of the season, growth rates and survival between animals born earlier and later in the season. We found no evidence of increased maternal input: late breeders had lighter offspring at weaning than early breeders, and late born juveniles did not increase their growth rates. Therefore, late born individuals ended the season with lower body mass, and were thus, less likely to survive the winter. In conclusion, life-history trajectories of juvenile yellow-bellied marmots were determined by maternal allocation, whereas post-weaning decisions did not modify their fate.  相似文献

The ionizing irradiation of rat fetuses during the last third of intrauterine development increased blood corticosterone level adulthood and decreased the open field locomotion of their adult offsprings of the next first nonirradiated generation. Treatment of the pregnant rats with glucocorticoids also decreased the offspring locomotion. Irradiation of fetuses in the middle of embryogenesis decreased blood corticosterone level in adulthood and shortened the open-field freezing reaction of their adult offsprings of the next first nonirradiated generation. Adrenalectomy of females before mating decreasing the blood corticosterone level had a similar effect on freezing duration of their adult offsprings. Irradiation of the ancestors within the last third of their intrauterine development had no effect on blood corticosterone level of their adult offsprings of the first generation and produced no behavioral alterations in their descendants of the next second nonirradiated generation. Irradiation of the ancestors in the middle of their embryogenesis decreased the stress-induced corticosterone response in their adult offsprings of the first generation and increased rearings and locomotion in their descendants of the next second nonirradiated generation. The data suggest that a single noxious treatment may have behavioral effects throughout two consequent generations of rats. Mother's glucocorticoid hormones may be one of the factors which transmit the effect.  相似文献

Both maternal glucocorticoid administration and maternal dietary protein or food restriction in pregnancy cause fewer nephrons and hypertension in the adult offspring. The purpose of these studies was to determine the extent to which nutritional factors contribute to programming of offspring hypertension by maternal glucocorticoids. Pregnant rats were treated with dexamethasone (100 microg x kg(-1) x d(-1) sc) on days 1-10 (ED) or days 15-20 (LD) of pregnancy. Additional groups of pregnant animals were pair fed to the early (EDPF) and late (LDPF) dexamethasone-treated groups, and another group was untreated or given vehicle (C). The dams treated with dexamethasone reduced their food intake and lost or failed to gain a normal amount of weight during treatment; body weights of ED dams caught up to normal after the treatment period, whereas those of LD dams did not. In adulthood ( approximately 21 wks), chronically instrumented male offspring of ED had normal blood pressures (125 +/- 2 mmHg vs. 126 +/- 1 mmHg in C), whereas LD offspring were hypertensive (136 +/- 3 mmHg). However, LDPF offspring were equally hypertensive (134 +/- 2 mmHg). Glomerular filtration rates normalized to body weight were not significantly different among groups. Qualitatively similar results were found in female offspring. Thus the long-term effects of maternal glucocorticoid administration at this dose on offspring's blood pressure may, in large part, be accounted for by the reduction in maternal food intake. These data suggest that maternal glucocorticoids and maternal food or protein restriction may, at least in part, share a common mechanism in programming offspring for hypertension. The window of sensitivity of future offspring blood pressure to either maternal insult coincides with nephrogenesis in the rat, suggesting that impaired renal development could play an important role in this programming.  相似文献

Little is known about how predator recognition develops under natural conditions. Predispositions to respond to some stimuli preferentially are likely to interact with the effects of experience. Convergent evidence from several studies suggests that predator-nai;ve tammar wallabies (Macropus eugenii) have some ability to respond to vertebrate predators differently from non-predators and that antipredator responses can be selectively enhanced by experience. Here, we examined the effects of differential reinforcement on responses to a model fox (Vulpes vulpes), cat (Felis catus) and conspecific wallaby. During training, tammars experienced paired presentations of a model fox and a simulated capture, as well as presentations of a wallaby and a cat alone. Training enhanced responses to the fox, relative to the conspecific wallaby, but acquired responses to the two predators did not differ, despite repeated, non-reinforced presentations of the cat. Results suggest that experience interacts with the wallabies' ability to perceive predators as a natural category.  相似文献

An important challenge in community ecology is identifying the functional characteristics capable of predicting the nature and strength of predator effects on food webs. We developed an individual‐based model, based on a shallow lake model system, to evaluate the total, consumptive, and non‐consumptive indirect effect that predators have on basal resources when the predators differ in their foraging types (active adaptive foraging or sedentary foraging). Overall, both predator types caused similar total indirect effects on lower trophic levels. However, the nature net effects of predators diverged between predator foraging types. Active predators caused larger non‐consumptive effects, relative to the total indirect effect, irrespective of predation pressure levels. On the other hand, sedentary predators caused larger non‐consumptive effects for lower predation pressure levels, but consumptive effects became more important as predation pressure increased. Our simulations showed that the reliance on a particular mechanism driving consumer–resource interactions is altered by predator foraging behavior and highlight the importance of both prey and predator foraging behaviors to predict the causes and consequences of cascading effects observed in food webs.  相似文献

Species ranges often change in relation to multiple environmental and demographic factors. Innovative behaviors may affect these changes by facilitating the use of novel habitats, although this idea has been little explored. Here, we investigate the importance of behavior during range change, using a 25‐year population expansion of Bonelli's eagle in southern Portugal. This unique population is almost exclusively tree nesting, while all other populations in western Europe are predominantly cliff nesting. During 1991–2014, we surveyed nest sites and estimated the year when each breeding territory was established. We approximated the boundaries of 84 territories using Dirichlet tessellation and mapped topography, land cover, and the density of human infrastructures in buffers (250, 500, and 1,000 m) around nest and random sites. We then compared environmental conditions at matching nest and random sites within territories using conditional logistic regression, and used quantile regression to estimate trends in nesting habitats in relation to the year of territory establishment. Most nests (>85%, n = 197) were in eucalypts, maritime pines, and cork oaks. Nest sites were farther from the nests of neighboring territories than random points, and they were in areas with higher terrain roughness, lower cover by agricultural and built‐up areas, and lower road and powerline densities. Nesting habitat selection varied little with year of territory establishment, although nesting in eucalypts increased, while cliff nesting and cork oak nesting, and terrain roughness declined. Our results suggest that the observed expansion of Bonelli's eagles was facilitated by the tree nesting behavior, which allowed the colonization of areas without cliffs. However, all but a very few breeding pairs settled in habitats comparable to those of the initial population nucleus, suggesting that after an initial trigger possibly facilitated by tree nesting, the habitat selection remained largely conservative. Overall, our study supports recent calls to incorporate information on behavior for understanding and predicting species range shifts.  相似文献

The present study investigates the time of hatching of the migratory locust Locusta migratoria using egg pods that are artificially buried in the soil under outdoor conditions. Most eggs hatch in the mid‐morning, with a peak between 11.00 and 12.00 h, and none hatch before 09.00 or after 16.00 h. Furthermore, most egg pods complete hatching within a day, although some take 2 or 3 days, and egg hatching is interrupted by rain. There are no large differences in hatching time from May to September. Laboratory experiments in which the eggs are exposed to temperatures simulating outdoor conditions show that soil temperature is the main factor controlling hatching activity. The increase in temperature in the morning appears to trigger egg hatching, as confirmed by laboratory experiments, which may explain the similar hatching times between seasons. The seasonal patterns of temperature variation and hatching time suggest that the hatching time of L. migratoria eggs may be adjusted to allow the hatchlings to be exposed to high temperatures in the afternoon so that they can harden their bodies quickly.  相似文献

The role of G-CSF in adaptive immunity   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a pleiotropic cytokine playing a major role as regulator of hematopoiesis and innate immune responses. There is growing evidence that G-CSF also exerts profound immunoregulatory effects in adaptive immunity. G-CSF mediates anti-inflammatory reactions accompanied by TH2 cell differentiation and promotes tolerogeneic cell populations at both poles of APC/T cell interaction. These recent findings have highlighted the novel impact of G-CSF in transplantation tolerance and autoimmunity. G-CSF represents a powerful and promising cytokine to promote T cell tolerance in pathological conditions associated with a TH1/TH2 imbalance.  相似文献

The management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is primarily based on the use of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), mainly comprising synthetic chemical compounds (that is, methotrexate or leflunomide) and biological agents (tumor necrosis factor inhibitors or abatacept). On the other hand, glucocorticoids (GCs), used for decades in the treatment of RA, are effective in relieving signs and symptoms of the disease, but also interfere with radiographic progression, either as monotherapy or in combination with conventional synthetic DMARDs. GCs exert most of their biological effects through a genomic action, using the cytosolic GC receptor and then interacting with the target genes within target cells that can result in increased expression of regulatory - including anti-inflammatory - proteins (transactivation) or decreased production of proinflammatory proteins (transrepression). An inadequate secretion of GCs from the adrenal gland, in relation to stress and inflammation, seems to play an important role in the pathogenesis and disease progression of RA. At present there is clear evidence that GC therapy, especially long-term low-dose treatment, slows radiographic progression by at least 50% when given to patients with early RA, hence satisfying the conventional definition of a DMARD. In addition, long-term follow-up studies suggest that RA treatment strategies which include GC therapy may favorably alter the disease course even after their discontinuation. Finally, a low-dose, modified night-release formulation of prednisone, although administered in the evening (replacement therapy), has been developed to counteract the circadian (night) rise in proinflammatory cytokine levels that contributes to disease activity, and might represent the way to further optimize the DMARD activity exerted by GCs in RA.  相似文献

Infantile autism is a common disorder of mental development; besides hereditary predisposition, various environmental factors, including the condition of the mother’s body during pregnancy (“maternal effect”), have a significant impact on its appearance. Oxidative stress is suggested to play a key role in the pathogenesis of infantile autism. It causes a prominent genotoxic effect, which is realized through appearance of single and double strand breaks of the nuclear DNA. In patients with infantile autism and their mothers we evaluated the degree of DNA damage by using the DNA comet assay and determining the comet tail moment and DNA percent ratio in the tail. These two parameters demonstrated strong correlation (r = 0.90). Mean and median values of both parameters were significantly higher in samples from autistic children, than in agematching healthy controls. Interestingly, these parameters were also higher in healthy mothers of autistic children and they did not differ from the values in the group of autistic children. In the control group of healthy women of reproductive age, who had no children with autism, the mean value of the DNA comet tail moment significantly differed from the group of mothers of autistic children, but not from the control group of healthy children. The results suggest that mentally healthy mothers of autistic children have some genotoxic factors, which can determine development of the pathological process in the fetus via the environmental “maternal effect” during gestation.  相似文献

1. Glucose uptake was measured throughout the year in marmots (Marmota flaviventris) by the hyperglycemic clamp technique. During each 2 hr experiment, the plasma glucose level was maintained at 215 mg/dl while blood samples were collected and analysed for glucose, insulin, glucagon, cortisol and catecholamines. 2. Glucose uptake was calculated from the glucose infusion rate, changes in the glucose pool (using a correction factor), and urinary glucose excretion. 3. In autumn, animals peaked in body weight (greater than 4.0 kg) and ceased to feed. Basal plasma insulin levels in autumn were significantly elevated over all other seasons (P less than 0.01) and glucose uptake in autumn was 9.7 +/- 2.4 mg/min which was significantly lower (P less than 0.05) than summer (21.7 +/- 2.4 mg/min) during the steady state phase of the glucose clamp (90-120 min). 4. Plasma glucagon levels declined during the clamp in all seasons but there was no significant difference between seasons. Plasma cortisol and catecholamine (norepinephrine and epinephrine) levels remained unchanged under basal and experimental conditions throughout the seasons. 5. During glucose infusion, beta-hydroxybutyrate levels were suppressed suggesting that lipolysis was reduced during the experiment. 6. These results suggest that the marmot exhibits seasonal changes in glucose uptake; the lowest rate of glucose uptake occurring in the autumn after the animals peak in body weight and cease to feed.  相似文献

Adhesive devices are used by arthropods not only in terrestrial locomotion but also in prey capture and predator defence. We argue that the physical mechanisms involved in both these contexts must mainly be capillarity and the viscosity of an adhesive secretion, whereas other mechanisms, such as friction or intermolecular forces, are of minor importance. Adhesive prey-capture devices might function as passive devices or might be actively extended toward the prey, sometimes in a very rapid manner. Adhesive mechanisms used for predator defence might involve firm adhesion to the substratum or the discharge of a sticky secretion to immobilize the appendages of the opponent. We review the occurrence of adhesive devices as employed in both functional contexts across the Arthropoda and argue that these mechanisms are of particular importance for slow-moving and relatively clumsy life forms. We discuss three case studies in more detail. (1) Loricera larvae (Carabidae) use galeae with an extremely flexible cuticle in combination with an adhesive secretion. (2) Adult Stenus species (Staphylinidae) employ two highly flexible paraglossae that are covered by an adhesive emulsion of lipid droplets dispersed in an aqueous proteinaceous liquid. (3) Springtails often adhere to the mouthparts, the antennae, the legs, or other parts of the integument of Stenus larvae before being captured with the mandibles.  相似文献

Innate predator recognition and fright response behaviours were compared in a laboratory study between second generation offspring from two related populations of steelhead trout Oncorhynchus mykiss from Sashin Creek, Alaska. The stream population was anadromous and co-occurred with Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma , a piscivore and salmonid predator. Sashin Lake, formerly fishless, was stocked with fish from the stream population in 1926 and that population has been isolated from heterospecific piscine predation ever since. Fish from the lake population were predicted to show diminished innate fright response to Dolly Varden scent relative to the stream population. The behaviour of 60 individual juvenile O. mykiss from each population was measured and observed in aquaria before and after exposure to chemical cues of Dolly Varden, conspecific skin extract, or a control of distilled water. The alarm substances caused significant behavioural changes in both populations in the amount of time spent motionless, time spent in the lower water column and feeding frequency. No significant differences were observed between the stream and lake populations in the change in behaviour between pre- and post-stimulus observation periods for any of the measured fright responses, indicating that the sequestered lake population has not lost the ability to detect or respond to conspecific alarm substances or Dolly Varden scent.  相似文献

Many non-photosynthetic species of protists and metazoans are capable of hosting viable algal endosymbionts or their organelles through adaptations of phagocytic pathways. A form of mixotrophy combining phototrophy and heterotrophy, acquired phototrophy (AcPh) encompasses a suite of endosymbiotic and organelle retention interactions, that range from facultative to obligate. AcPh is a common phenomenon in aquatic ecosystems, with endosymbiotic associations generally more prevalent in nutrient poor environments, and organelle retention typically associated with more productive ones. All AcPhs benefit from enhanced growth due to access to photosynthetic products; however, the degree of metabolic integration and dependency in the host varies widely. AcPh is found in at least four of the major eukaryotic supergroups, and is the driving force in the evolution of secondary and tertiary plastid acquisitions. Mutualistic resource partitioning characterizes most algal endosymbiotic interactions, while organelle retention is a form of predation, characterized by nutrient flow (i.e., growth) in one direction. AcPh involves adaptations to recognize specific prey or endosymbionts and to house organelles or endosymbionts within the endomembrane system but free from digestion. In many cases, hosts depend upon AcPh for the production of essential nutrients, many of which remain obscure. The practice of AcPh has led to multiple independent secondary and tertiary plastid acquisition events among several eukaryote lineages, giving rise to the diverse array of algae found in modern aquatic ecosystems. This article highlights those AcPhs that are model research organisms for both metazoans and protists. Much of the basic biology of AcPhs remains enigmatic, particularly (1) which essential nutrients or factors make certain forms of AcPh obligatory, (2) how hosts regulate and manipulate endosymbionts or sequestered organelles, and (3) what genomic imprint, if any, AcPh leaves on non-photosynthetic host species.  相似文献

Platelets' foremost role in survival is hemostasis. However, a significant quantity of research has demonstrated that platelets are an integral part of inflammation and can also be potent effector cells of the innate immune response. CD154, a molecule of vital importance to adaptive immune responses, is expressed by activated platelets and has been implicated in platelet-mediated modulation of innate immunity and inflammatory disease states. Recent studies in mice extend the role of platelet CD154 to the adaptive immune response demonstrating that platelets can enhance antigen presentation, improve CD8 T cell responses, and play a critical function in normal T-dependent humoral immunity. The latter studies suggest that the current paradigm for the B cell germinal center response should be modified to include a role for platelets.  相似文献

Effect of glucocorticoid deficiency on susceptibility to gastric mucosal injury by non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) was studied in rats. The corticosterone production was inhibited by a single large dose of cortisol as well as by an adrenalectomy. The drop in the corticosterone production prompted gastric erosions induced by the NSAID. Replacing corticosterone prevented the effects of cortisol pretreatment of adrenalectomy on NSAID-induced gastric erosions. The data obtained reveal a gastroprotective effect of endogenous glucocorticoids.  相似文献
