The paper describes studies of post-fire succession in heathland vegetation in N.E. Scotland, dominated by Calluna vulgaris. A preliminary model (Legg, 1978) suggested good agreement between simulation of succession on the basis of a Markov chain and observations of stands at different stages of development after burning, at least in the earlier stages. Vegetation transitions are currently being recorded in permanent plots on burnt areas. First results confirm the view that (a) the post-fire succession has the properties of a Markov process, (b) this type of model remains valid when constructed from records of actual transitions, rather than data obtained by inference from evidence of transition. Comparing successional events in stands where, at the time of burning, the Calluna population was in pioneer-, building-, mature-and degenerate phases, shows that transition matrices generally agree with the Markov hypothesis, but not in the case of stands where Calluna was degenerate when burnt. The composition of establishing vegetation 1 year after fire is not confined to species normally associated with the early stages of succession, but reflects the composition of the stand before burning. Redevelopment after fire is described in terms of an initial floristic composition of species with strategies permitting early re-establishment, selected by the recurrence of the fire factor. Subsequent transitions represent changes in their relative abundance due to differing growth properties and competitive interactions. This interpretation applies only under conditions of recurrent incidence of fire (normally once in 10–15 yr). If fire does not recur, Calluna stands pass into the degenerate phase, where changes in the nature of relay floristics may come into play (e.g. with tree colonization).Nomenelature follows Clapham, Tutin & Warburg (1962) for vascular plants; Smith (1978) for bryophytes.  相似文献

Studies on a long-term experiment on Calluna-Eriophorum bog indicate that the length of time between management fires affects the post-fire development. A short rotation (every 10 years) results in increased dominance by Eriophorum spp. while a long rotation (every 20 years) results in greater abundance of Calluna vulgaris after fire. Variations in post-fires species abundances are related to pre-fire stand composition coupled with the patchy distribution of regeneration centers of rhizomatous species. The usefulness of burning this vegetation type in management for herbivore grazing is questioned.Nomenclature follows Tutin et al. (1964 80) for vascular plants. Smith (1978) for mosses, Watson (1981) for liverworts and Hawksworth, James & Coppins (1980) for lichens. Following common practice. Calluna vulgaris is referred to simply as Calluna. Subalpine forest succession was studied on Mt. Fuji, Japan, where various types of forests in different successional phases occur owing to volcanic action. Ninety stands were subjected to ordination using an index (SI) defined by the relative basal area and the life span of component woody species, and the cover of canopy layer of the sample stands. Two different sequences of sample stands were found. One was from deciduous scrubs, through Larix kaempferi forests and Abies forests, to Tsuga diversifolia forests, and the other from Abies-Tsuga thickets to Abies forests. Through analyses of the forest structure and composition, soil survey and identification of fallen logs, the former sequence was recognized as the primary sere and the latter as a regeneration sere following gap formation. During forest succession, basal area reached a maximum in the seral phase with a multi-layered structure. The Tsuga forests, whose understory is restricted to a moss layer, were regarded as the climax. The death or fall of Tsuga stems resulted in gaps, which were subsequently occupied by Abies-Tsuga thickets. The second Abies forests were distinguished from the ones in the primary sere by the occurrence of Dryopteris and Cacalia and the lack of Rhododendron in the understorey. Both Abies forest types included Tsuga saplings. Thus, a cyclic relation is supposed between Abies and Tsuga.Nomenclature follows Ohwi (1975) and Nakaike (1982) for vascular plants, Iwatsuki & Noguchi (1973) for mosses, Inoue (1981) for hepaticae, Kashiwadani (1981) for lichens, respectively. Abies veitchii, A. mariesii were lumped as Abies spp.I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. Toshio Hamaya, Tokyo, for the cordial guidance and encouragement. I also thank Prof. M. Conservation strategies of forested landscapes must consider biodiversity of the included site types, i.e. timber-quality forests and associated non-timber-quality stands. The objectives were to characterize forest overstory structure in timber-quality versus associated non-timber-quality stands; and to compare their understory communities. Six forest types were sampled in Nothofagus forests of Tierra del Fuego (Argentina): two timber-quality N. pumilio forests, and four associated non-timber-quality stands (edge, N. antarctica, wetlands and streamside forests). Overstory structure and understory vegetation (species richness, frequencies, cover and biomass) were characterized during spring and summer seasons. Analysis of variance and multivariates were carried out. Overstory structure differed across the site types, with higher tree size, canopy closure and tree volume in timber-quality stands. Fifty-one understory plant species were observed, but understory variables varied with site types, especially wetlands (highest native and exotic richness, cover and biomass, and 25% of exclusive species). Site types were grouped in three: N. antarctica stands, streamside stands and the other N. pumilio forests according to multivariate analysis. Forty three percent of plants were distributed in all site types, and all timber-quality forest understory species were present in some associated non-timber-quality stands. Timber-quality N. pumilio forests have a marginal value for understory conservation compared to associated non-timber-quality stands, because these last include all the plants observed in timber-quality forests and also possess many exclusive species. Therefore, protection of associated non-timber-quality stands during forest management planning could increase understory conservation at landscape level, and these could be better reserves of understory diversity than retentions of timber-quality stands.  相似文献

Previous authors have suggested that cyclical succession takes place inCalluna-dominated heathland, and is determined by the different growth phases of the dominant. Characteristic species are said to invade at different stages of the life cycle ofCalluna, particularly in the initial and pioneer phases and in the degenerate phase. In the last phase, gaps are formed due to separation and dying of the oldest frame branches. This paper aims to analyze in which microhabitat and in which phase of theCalluna life cycle seedling emergence and establishment is possible.More seedlings appear in pioneerCalluna than in matureCalluna stands in experimentally manipulated micro-sites. In pioneerCalluna establishment is affected only by application of litter, in matureCalluna by increased illumination. The differences between treatments disappeared after three years, but not the difference in establishment between stands.Seedling emergence from species sown experimentally was different in the successive phases ofCalluna. Highest emergence was in the pioneer stand. In a seedling survey also most seedlings appeared and established in the pioneer phase. The number of recently germinated seeds was high in all phases. However, seedling survival was very low, except in the pioneer stands. This study does not of itself show evidence for cyclical succession inCalluna-dominated heath vegetation. Colonization of gaps by seedlings ofCalluna in mature or degenerate phases is possible, but must be an infrequent occurrence.Nomenclauture follows Clapham, Tutin & Warburg (1962).We wish to thank Dr G. R. Miller for stimulating discussions during the start of the experiments. E. de Hullu wishes to thank the Botany Department in Aberdeen for their hospitality during the research period.  相似文献

This study examined the temporal patterns of establishment, suppression, and release of major tree species in two old-growth Ohio forest remnants as a means to determine the past disturbance history of these forests. Increment cores were taken from a total of 154 trees from two well-drained, upland plots and two poorly-drained, bottomland plots in each of the two forested areas. Acer saccharum and Fagus grandifolia exhibited multiple episodes of suppression and release prior to becoming canopy trees, and could tolerate suppressions as long as 84 years. In contrast, Quercus macrocarpa, Q. muehlenbergii, Prunus serotina, and Acer saccharinum rerely exhibited any tolerance to suppression and appeared to have entered the canopy after single disturbances had opened large areas of canopy. There was clear synchrony in the temporal pattern of establishment and final release from suppression among trees from bottomland plots scattered throughout the stands, indicating that relatively large disturbances were important in these poorly-drained areas. In contrast, there was little synchrony among trees from well-drained upland plots, except in a single instance where selective cutting of Quercus trees opened the canopy. Thus, the canopy of upland site was likely subjected only to small disturbances resulting from the death of one or a few trees. At the whole of forest level, there was evidence of episodic recruitment of canopy trees in both forests. Establishment of Fraxinus spp. and Quercus spp. were particularly episodic, and few Fraxinus or Quercus trees alive today established during the last century. These data suggest that large disturbances have affected canopy dynamics of both upland and bottomland areas prior to 1900 and in bottomland forests through this century. In contrast, disturbances in upland areas during this century have been restricted to small, treefall-generated canopy gaps.  相似文献

Summary The coenecium of Rhabdopleura is a tube that surrounds the zooid. It is secreted by the cephalic shield of the zooid and contains three sorts of fibres in an electron lucent matrix. One of the fibre types contains a double helix of fine fibrils. Preliminary histochemical investigations suggest that the fibres may be keratinous.I wish to thank Professor J. Z. Insect community studies related to forest management focus principally on timber-quality stands, and often omit the remainder of the landscape. This study aimed mainly to compare insect communities of primary timber-quality forests (Nothofagus pumilio) with associated non-timber-quality stands (wetland, edge, riparian and N. antarctica forests), and secondarily to characterize these insect assemblages throughout the growing season and at different vertical strata to evaluate the importance of each habitat type for insect conservation. A total of 18,800 individuals belonging to 231 RTUs (recognizable taxonomic units) were identified, of which Diptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera and Coleoptera were the dominant orders. Lepidoptera RTUs were mostly generalists, while the other main orders were most frequently found in timber-quality forests and included many RTUs with specific environmental requirements. Timber-quality stands had higher richness and abundance than associated non-timber-quality forests and possessed more exclusive species (18%), while 39% of RTUs were shared between all sites. The spatial heterogeneity of timber-quality stands generated different niches and favored insect diversity, which would not have been maintained by protecting non-timber-quality stands alone. Consequently, the proper management of subantarctic Nothofagus forests must include the conservation of timber-quality stands, as protection of non-timber-quality areas alone will not be sufficient for insect conservation at the landscape scale.  相似文献

Summary The influence of a long daily photoperiod and continuous darkness was studied on the hypothalamo-hypophysial system of Rana temporaria. After six weeks of treatment (December-January 1968/1969) the secretory activity of the hypothalamo-hypophysial system of the light-treated animals was enhanced. The amount of aldehyde-fuchsin positive material in the preoptic nucleus increased as a result of the light treatment, and decreased in the median eminence, whereas in the posterior lobe no difference could be observed between the light- and dark-treated animals. The karyometric results showed an increase of the nuclear volume of the cells of the preoptic nucleus after light treatment; small differences were noticed between distinct areas of the preoptic nucleus.Autoradiographic data especially showed that light influenced the hypothalamo-hypophysial system to a high degree. Half an hour after the injection of 35S-cysteine, the incorporation of the isotope in the preoptic nucleus of the light-treated animals was five times as much as in the dark-treated animals. In the median eminence and in the posterior lobe, the autoradiographic results confirmed the results found with regard to the amount of aldehyde-fuchsin positive material. Labelled material is released only from the median eminence and not from the posterior lobe. The author is indebted to Prof. Dr. J. C. van de Kamer and Dr. F. C. G. van de Veerdonk for their interest and helpful encouragement. Thanks are also due to Ir. J. J. Bezem for his assistance in solving the statistical problems and to Mr. H. van Kooten and his staff for making the illustrations. The co-operation of the student Mr. E. Summary A combination of a removal and fertilization experiment in the field and a replacement experiment in containers in a cold frame was carried out to investigate the role of nutrient supply in the interactions between Calluna vulgaris and Molinia caerulea. It is concluded that the growth of Calluna as well as that of Molinia increased with increasing nutrient availability. However, the increase in biomass of Molinia was much larger than that of Calluna. It is also concluded that increased nutrient availability favours the competitive vigour of Molinia in interaction with Calluna.  相似文献

A technique for chloroplast isolation from the brown algae macrophyte Laminaria digitata (Phaeophyceae) is described which results in stable and photo-synthetically active chloroplasts. Chloroplasts in L. digitata are mainly located in the surface layer meristodermic cells. The expanded intercellular regions of the cortex tissue contain abundant mucilage which is exuded during mechanical tissue disruption. The method described for chloroplast isolation is based on appropriate isolation buffers and the removal of mucilage which is secreted during tissue disruption, and it may be applicable to other macroalgae with large amounts of mucilage. The isolated chloroplasts showed stable oxygen-evolving activities. The reproducibility of this technique was established by analysis of electron transport and evaluation of the activities of photosystems I and II.Abbreviations BSA bovine serum albumin - DCPIP 2,6-dichlorophenol-indophenol - DMBQ 2,6-dimethyl-benzoquinone - MV methyl viologen We thank Mr. D. An ordination study of 20Eucalyptus tetrodonta forest stands growing on deep earths in monsoonal Australia revealed two major gradients in understorey vegetation type. The first axis reflected both floristic and structural understorey variation, where litter and shrub cover were inversely related to grass cover. This axis is thought to reflect a complex fire-vegetation type interaction, where vegetation is primarily determined by the saturation of the soil profile in the wet season, as measured by the colour of the iron rich soils. On the second axis of the ordination, floristic composition but not vegetation structure, and stand height were found to vary with the intercorrelated measures of soil gravel and moisture supply.E. tetrodonta is able to regenerate in the absence of fire, but firing appears to stimulate regeneration. All stands contained some advance growth, which occurs in distinct clumps, probably reflecting these plants clonal origin. Sapling presence in the stands is variable and the recruitment of advance growth into this size class appears to be related to over-wood competition. The size class distribution of trees was found to be similar amongst the stands, therefore stand structure appeared to be independent of understorey type. In comparison to general models of temperate eucalypt regeneration processes the tropical eucalypts have evolved different regeneration strategies, possibly in response to the severe annual drought.Nomenclature: Chippendale (1971), unless otherwise indicated. Small-scale, short-term cycles constitute an important aspect of vegetation dynamics. It has been widely accepted that such cycles are characteristic of unmanaged heath communities where the dominant, Calluna vulgaris, undergoes an age-related series of changes in its growth and morphology. This is thought to give rise to a repetitive sequence of changes in the occupancy of gaps which form in the Calluna canopy and are first colonized by other species, with Calluna re-establishing later. Recently, doubts have been cast as to whether the changes are in fact often repetitive. A new study has shown much greater variability than was previously suspected in the transitions occurring in gaps. There is evidence that, in some instances though by no means all, Calluna can re-establish and thereby initiate a genuine cycle. It seems, however, that such re-entry is seldom by means of seedling establishment, but more frequently by development of adventitious shoots and roots on stems which have come to lie across the gap and have been covered by moss, moist litter or humus.  相似文献

The results of studies of Micrasterias rotata (Grev.) Ralfs, M. thomasiana Archer (biradiate and uniradiate forms) and Closterium sp. using one- and two-dimensional vibrating probes show that transcellular ionic currents are detectable only around cells undergoing expansion of the primary cell wall (half-cell); current enters local regions of expansion and exits over both the rigid surface of the secondary wall and regions of the primary wall where hardening of the wall prevents further expansion. Current densities remain at steady levels until expansion stops with maturation of the primary wall, whereupon currents are no longer detectable. The temporal and spatial correlation between the currents and regions of wall expansion is particularly evident because morphogenesis of the half-cell is a determinate process. Measurements of inward currents ranged from 0.1 to 5.4 A · cm–2, and outward currents ranged from-0.05 to -1.5 A · cm–2 measured at 18 from the cell surface. The results of ion substitution and channel-blocker studies indicate that the currents may be carried at least in part by Ca2+, Cl, H+ and K+ ions. The possible role of a Ca2+ influx during tip growth in desmids is discussed. This work was conducted at the National Vibrating Probe Facility, Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Mass., USA. The research on incidence of mistletoe (Viscum album ssp. abietis) on silver fir (Abies alba) was carried out in natural fir stands in Croatia. In the area of Gorski Kotar 32.8 % of the examined dominant fir trees were infected with mistletoe. The mistletoe incidence was presented according to the damage degrees of silver fir from 0 (healthy trees) to 4 (dead trees), rated by the crown defoliation and needle discoloration. With the increase of incidence, mistletoe spreads more onto more vital, i.e. less damaged trees. In the Dinaric Alps 28.6% of the examined fir trees were infected, this percentage amounting to 27.1% for the mountainous regions between the Sava and Drava rivers. The site and stand parameters (exposure, elevation, site quality, forest community and crown closure) were analysed in order to establish whether there was a correlation between these parameters and mistletoe incidence. There was a negative correlation between the elevation and mistletoe incidence. Among the compartments with a closed stands there were considerably less compartments with higher mistletoe incidence than among compartments with a sparsely closed and understocked stands. The other analysed site and stand parameters individually had no significant influence on mistletoe incidence. The correlation of silver fir mortality in 2004 and mistletoe incidence in 2002/03 was analysed, and their strong correlation was established. Mistletoe could be considered as a bioindicator of silver fir decline, and probably a significant contributor to that decline. In the areas where mistletoe incidence is great it can be presumed that silver fir is significantly damaged.  相似文献

The incidence of natural fructification ofChondrostereum purpureumwas estimated quantitatively on southern Vancouver Island during two winter seasons in randomly located 1000-m2plots and compared with potential added fructification that might occur as a result of using the fungus to control stump-sprouting of hardwood weeds in young forest stands. Fructification was surveyed in forests as well as in urban or agricultural areas by estimating the surface areas of woody substrates covered with basidiocarps. In addition to random plots, estimates were made also in locations where the fungus would be expected to occur (woodpiles, silvicultural thinnings, and killed trees). Basidiocarps were found throughout the area in various types of forest cover as well as in urban or agricultural situations. The amount of added fructification through the use of the fungus as a biological control agent was determined from inoculated plots as well as from calculated stump-surface areas developed from published stand-density data. Added fructification was multiplied by a factor representing the maximum biological control frequency in order to compare added fructification with natural fructification values. From the various calculations, it was determined that the added fructification ofC. purpureumis of the same order of magnitude as naturally occurring levels or even lower. In addition, there is a distinct geographical separation between predominantly forestry and predominantly settled areas where fruit and ornamental trees are cultivated. Accordingly, it was concluded that using the fungus as a biological control agent in forestry is not likely to pose a significant threat to fruit growing and commercial forests.  相似文献

Modification of Sediments and Macrofauna by an Invasive Marsh Plant   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Invasive grasses have recently altered salt marsh ecosystems throughout the northern hemisphere. On the eastern seaboard of the USA, Phragmites australis has invaded both brackish and salt marsh habitats. Phragmites australis influence on sediments and fauna was investigated along a salinity and invasion-age gradient in marshes of the lower Connecticut River estuary. Typical salinities were about 19–24 ppt in Site I, 9–10 ppt in Site II and 5–7 ppt in Site III. Strongest effects were evident in the least saline settings (II and III) where Phragmites has been present the longest and exists in monoculture. Limited influence was evident in the most saline region (I) where Phragmites and native salt marsh plants co-occur. The vegetation within Phragmites stands in tidal regions of the Connecticut River generally exhibits taller, but less dense shoots, higher above-ground biomass, and lower below-ground biomass than does the un-invaded marsh flora. There were lower sediment organic content, greater litter accumulation and higher sediment chlorophyll a concentrations in Phragmites- invaded than un-invaded marsh habitat. Epifaunal gastropods (Succinea wilsoni and Stagnicola catascopium) were less abundant in habitats where Phragmites had invaded than in un-invaded marsh habitat. Macro-infaunal densities were lower in the Phragmites-invaded than un-invaded habitats at the two least saline sites (II and III). Phragmites stands supported more podurid insects, sabellid polychaetes, and peracarid crustaceans, fewer arachnids, midges, tubificid and enchytraeid oligochaetes, and greater habitat-wide taxon richness as measured by rarefaction, than did the un-invaded stands. The magnitude and significance of the compositional differences varied with season and with site; differences were generally greatest at the oldest, least saline sites (II and III) and during May, when faunal densities were higher than in September. However, experimental design and the 1-year study period precluded clear separation of salinity, age, and seasonal effects. Although structural effects of Phragmites on salt marsh faunas are evident, further investigation is required to determine the consequences of these effects for ecosystem function. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
