There is enough experience gained during 10 years of genetically modified (GM) crops application to seriously evaluate the ratio of risk to benefit and reduce the existing regulation in Europe. It does not evaluate benefit and the risk of the alternative situation when GM crops are not used. The precautionary principle is applied only to GM crops application, never to alternative solutions of, e.g., pest control. The Eurobarometer 2005 shows how propaganda inseminates public opinion with shameful nonsense. Voices asking for change of this politics come from the European Parliament, British ACRE, EuropaBio, even from Commission, scientists and other European sources, but also from Africa and other developing countries. 相似文献

The influence of nanodiamonds synthesized by detonation on human red and white blood cells in vitro was studied. Nine nanodiamond samples produced by different manufacturers and two samples of modified nanodiamonds with high colloidal stability were used in the study. It was shown that nanoparticles cause the destruction of white cells and the hemolysis of erythrocytes. Possible mechanisms of the desctructive effect of detonation nanodiamonds on blood-forming elements are discussed. 相似文献

A longstanding idea in the literature on human cooperation is that cooperation should be reinforced when conditional cooperators are more likely to interact. In the context of social networks, this idea implies that cooperation should fare better in highly clustered networks such as cliques than in networks with low clustering such as random networks. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a series of web-based experiments, in which 24 individuals played a local public goods game arranged on one of five network topologies that varied between disconnected cliques and a random regular graph. In contrast with previous theoretical work, we found that network topology had no significant effect on average contributions. This result implies either that individuals are not conditional cooperators, or else that cooperation does not benefit from positive reinforcement between connected neighbors. We then tested both of these possibilities in two subsequent series of experiments in which artificial seed players were introduced, making either full or zero contributions. First, we found that although players did generally behave like conditional cooperators, they were as likely to decrease their contributions in response to low contributing neighbors as they were to increase their contributions in response to high contributing neighbors. Second, we found that positive effects of cooperation were contagious only to direct neighbors in the network. In total we report on 113 human subjects experiments, highlighting the speed, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness of web-based experiments over those conducted in physical labs. 相似文献

Exposure to space radiation has long been acknowledged as a potential showstopper for long-duration manned interplanetary
missions. In an effort to gain more information on space radiation risk and to develop countermeasures, NASA initiated several
years ago a Space Radiation Health Program, which is currently supporting biological experiments performed at the Brookhaven
National Laboratory. Accelerator-based radiobiology research in the field of space radiation research is also under way in
Russia and Japan. The European Space Agency (ESA) supports research in the field in three main directions: spaceflight experiments
on the International Space Station; modeling and simulations of the space radiation environment and transport; and, recently,
ground-based radiobiology experiments exploiting the high-energy SIS18 synchrotron at GSI in Germany (IBER program). Several
experiments are currently under way within IBER, and so far, beams of C and Fe-ions at energies between 11 and 1,000 MeV/n

With the growing interest in the field of proteomics, the amount of publicly available proteome resources has also increased dramatically. This means that there are many useful resources available for almost all aspects of a proteomics experiment. However, it remains vital to use the right resource, for the right purpose, at the right time. This review is therefore meant to aid the reader in obtaining an overview of the available resources and their application, thus providing the necessary background to choose the appropriate resources for the experiment at hand. Many of the resources are also taking advantage of so-called crowdsourcing to maximize the potential of the resource. What this means and how this can improve future experiments will also be discussed. The text roughly follows the steps involved in a proteomics experiment, starting with the planning of the experiment, via the processing of the data and the analysis of the results, to the community-wide sharing of the produced data. 相似文献

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their behavior in the environment are complex and can only be assessed if the different components are distinguished. This article examines, how by EU law the real causation processes from the GMO release to various endpoints are dissected, individually analysed and then again viewed in their entirety. In addition, the articles includes, how the intellectual process of assessment is divided into the steps of tiered generation, shared submission and structured evaluation of relevant knowledge. Bacteria and fungi from pristine soil, never exposed to glufosinate herbicide, were isolated and analyzed for glufosinate
tolerance. Seven of the 15 tested isolates were sensitive to 1 mM glufosinate (an active ingredient of many nonselective contact
herbicides), 5 were resistant to 4 mM glufosinate and 3 even to 8 mM glufosinate in liquid medium. None of the isolated microorganisms
carried the gene for glufosinate resistance bar (bialaphos resistance) in its genome and at least in some of glufosinate-resistant isolates the increased glutamine synthetase
level was detected as a possible resistance mechanism. The transfer of the bar glufosinate resistance gene from transgenic maize Bt 176 into glufosinate-sensitive soil bacterium Bacillus pumilus S1 was not detected under the laboratory conditions by a classical plate count method and PCR. The ecological risk of potential
