The hairs at the apical end of the seeds ofHillia are pluriseriate, multicellular structures. The cells making up a hair are elongated exotesta cells and, consequently, also have secondary thickenings identical (H. parasitica) or similar (H. costanensis) to those found on the exotesta cells on the main body of the seeds. Hair formation already starts in bud stage: at and around the chalazal region of an ovule, integument epidermis cells are grouped together to form ± elongated packets of 4–7 cells. The cells of each packet undergo further elongation and anticlinal division so that a hair on a mature seed may be up to c. 30 mm long. Basally, the seeds have a tail- to ± wing-like appendage, made up of only two cell layers, the exotesta of the ab- and adaxial side of the seed. This basal appendage shows the same anatomical structure as the wings of various anemochorous rubiaceous seeds. Although seed hairs of this kind are unique in theRubiaceae and — from the point of development and structure — not homologous to exotesta wings, the presence of a basal wing-like appendage suggests thatHillia, previously often placed into a tribe of its own (Hillieae), can be accommodated in theCinchoneae, a tribe in which winged, anemochorous seeds predominate. The tufts of hairs of the comose seeds ofHillia look superficially similar to those of certainAsclepiadaceae andApocynaceae (like theRubiaceae belonging to the orderGentianales). Comparisons based on literature data, however, reveal that there are striking differences in the position, development and structure of the hairs (produced at the micropylar end, initiated after fertilization, hairs unicellular, etc.).  相似文献

The highly specialized, two-celled hairs fringing the anthers ofCyclanthera pedata (L.)Schrad. and its relatives aid in pollination by producing a glue which sticks the coarse pollen grains onto insect visitors. This was proven by direct observations, confirming older assumptions. The adhesive is extruded from the big basal cell which bursts upon the slightest touch to the small top cell.—Turgor and, possibly, swelling pressure of the sticky material, are responsible for plasmoptysis and ejaculation. Cell contraction is due to tension of cuticular clips and, to a minor degree, to elasticity of the pectinic wall. A preformed apical dehiscence line disrupts when the top cell is bent aside.—The anthers hairs of a flower develop synchronously. From light and electron microscopic observations, the adhesive appears not to be a product of internal secretion. It originates from the endopolyploid giant nucleus of the basal cell, which finally degenerates by liquefying and swelling. The numerous peculiar elaioplasts apparently do not contribute to the hair's function.—The anther hairs are homologous to, and possibly have evolved from the so-called explosion hairs occurring on the green parts of manyCucurbitaceae.

Summary The sensory innervation pattern is described for the femur of the middle and the hind legs ofCarausius morosus. — In one of the nerves (F121) extracellular recordings show a unit which mirrors the tension of the flexor tibiae muscle (tension receptor). The tension receptor increases the firing rate of the slow extensor tibiae motoneuron. It measures the tension of one or more muscle fibres of the anterior side near the distal end of the muscle. The anatomical basis of this receptor is uncertain. — Another receptor was found on the ventral side of the distal end of the apodeme of the extensor tibiae muscle (apodeme receptor). Recordings from this receptor could not be obtained inCarausius. But inExtatosoma tiaratum it responded to stretching of the nerve. In the natural position it shows a minimum of excitation in the 90°-position of the femur-tibia-joint and an increase in firing rate for both flexion and extension. — Tactile hairs react phasically and have no special sensitivity for one direction. Two receptors at the dorsal side of the femur-tibia-joint (RDAL and RDPL), which are situated in the same position as inSchistocerca hind legs, react phasically to extension movements and fire tonically in the most extended position of the joint. — The influence of these receptors on the position of the femur-tibia-joint is only weak.Supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft  相似文献

A non-lethal dose of cysteamine — a radioprotective agent — when administered intraperitoneally was demonstrated to increase the susceptibility of mice to infection byPseudomonas aeruginosa. At numbers of cells (about 106) which killed 30–40 per cent of the untreated mice, the intraperitoneal treatment with 5 mg per day of cysteamine raised the mortality to 60 per cent. In contrast, the presence of 10 mg/ml of cysteamine in drinking water appeared to give some protection against the same number ofPseudomonas cells for the first three days after infection, but increased the susceptibility when the oral treatment was prolonged beyond three days. Such effects could have some significance in the study of sulfhydryl compounds as radioprotective agents.  相似文献

Microsporum canis was isolated from the inflammatory skin lesions of a Bengal tiger in April, 1979. In clinical findings rounded area of alopecia, 3 to 8 cm in size was observed on the right haúnch and the tail. The skin lesions were covered with thin scales, but the inflammatory changes were not severe. Findings, on physical examination, were unremarkable and the animal appeared healthy except for the skin lesions. The infected hairs were invaded by the fungal elements and arthroconidia were around the hair shaft. Cuticles and cortex of the infected hairs were brittle. They were evidently digested and were easily pulled out from the hair follicles. In mycological findings numerous and typical macroconidia were observed. By cross mating of a isolate from tiger andNannizzia otae(–) strain, cleistothecia were produced. Both organic iodide and undecylenic acid ointment were effective for therapy. In this paper the dermatophytosis of tiger caused byM. canis is described.  相似文献

Summary It appears from the results reported above that in some isolates abortive basidia could be obtained on inorganic nitrogen compounds containing ammonium salts, on some of the vegetable extracts particularlyS. sapindus andR. sativus and on hormones specially — alpha-N-acetic acid and trichloro-phenoxy-2-4-5 acetic acid. As suggested earlier, it is likely that if some modifications are incorporated in the basal medium or by changing the quantities of this basal medium or by changing the quantities of the compounds it might be possible to formulate a suitable medium which would induce easy basidial formation byS. rolfsii isolates.  相似文献

Summary A case of an accidental human infection caused byLeptospira ballum, following a superficial scratch on a finger of the patient while handling a white mouse is described. This mouse proved to be a urinary carrier ofLeptospira ballum.Further investigations revealed that practically all mice of the same colony voidedLeptospira ballum with the urine. On examination of other mice-breeding colonies another colony infected withL. ballum was detected; in 1941 a strain which later also proved to beL. ballum, was isolated from the urine of a white mouse. The various strains were analysed; they were serologically identical toBorg Petersen's type strain although the virulence for guinea-pigs was much less.Mice from aL. ballum-positive colony proved to have no immunity to infection with virulentL. icterohaemorrhagiae, but — with one exception — remained alive and became carriers ofL. icterohaemorrhagiae, whilstL. ballum could not be detected any more in the urine of these mice.  相似文献

Clones 02 and 4430 of Tradescantia were tested in field, greenhouse and controlled environment chambers as monitors for the potentially hazardous UV-B irradiation increase that could result from stratospheric ozone decrease. In addition to about 16 hr of solar emissions at about 2100 micro-einsteins·m−2·s−1 (400–700 nm) and 15 hr at about 1800 micro-einsteins·m−2·s−1 in the field and greenhouse, respectively, plants were given 7 hr of supplemental UV-B irradiation per day for 27 days. After the first 7 days of UV-B irradiation exposure, cumulative data were recorded for 20 days. Cuttings of Tradescantia plants in controlled-environment, exposed to 16 hr of simulated solar emission of about 800 micro-einsteins·m−2·s−1 (400–700 nm), were also exposed to 10 hr of supplemental UV-B irradiation per day for 1 or 2 days. All plants were checked for somatic aberrations (color changes in the flower petals and stamen hairs), number of hairs per stamen, and cells per hair. Pollen germination and pollen tube growth were noted after a 90-min UV-B irradiation period.Somatic aberrations occurred infrequently in the petals and were judged unreliable criteria for use in monitoring enhanced UV-B irradiation environments. The number of aberrant events within stamen hairs, however, was significantly increased by the UV-B irradiation treatments. while pollen germination and pollen tube growth were significantly reduced. These data indicate that color changes in stamen hairs and pollen viability are useful criteria for monitoring UV-B irradiation changes.  相似文献

Low phosphorus availability regulates root hair growth in Arabidopsis by (1) increasing root hair length, (2) increasing root hair density, (3) decreasing the distance between the root tip and the point at which root hairs begin to emerge, and (4) increasing the number of epidermal cell files that bear hairs (trichoblasts). The coordinated regulation of these traits by phosphorus availability prompted us to speculate that they are synergistic, that is, that they have greater adaptive value in combination than they do in isolation. In this study, we explored this concept using a geometric model to evaluate the effect of varying root hair length (short, medium, and long), density (0, 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 root hairs per mm of root length), tip to first root hair distance (0.5, 1, 2, and 4 mm), and number of trichoblast files (8 vs. 12) on phosphorus acquisition efficiency (PAE) in Arabidopsis. SimRoot, a dynamic three-dimensional geometric model of root growth and architecture, was used to simulate the growth of Arabidopsis roots with contrasting root hair parameters at three values of phosphorus diffusion coefficient (D e=1×10–7, 1×10–8, and 1×10–9 cm2 s–1) over time (20, 40, and 60 h). Depzone, a program that dynamically models nutrient diffusion to roots, was employed to estimate PAE and competition among root hairs. As D e decreased from 1×10–7 to 1×10–9 cm2 s–1, roots with longer root hairs and higher root hair densities had greater PAE than those with shorter and less dense root hairs. At D e=1×10–9 cm2 s–1, the PAE of root hairs at any given density was in the order of long hairs > medium length hairs > short hairs, and the maximum PAE occurred at density = 96 hairs mm–1 for both long and medium length hairs. This was due to greater competition among root hairs when they were short and dense. Competition over time decreased differences in PAE due to density, but the effect of length was maintained, as there was less competition among long hairs than short hairs. At high D e(1×10–7 cm2 s–1), competition among root hairs was greatest among long hairs and lowest among short hairs, and competition increased with increasing root hair densities. This led to a decrease in PAE as root hair length and density increased. PAE was also affected by the tip to first root hair distance. At low D e values, decreasing tip to first root hair distance increased PAE of long hairs more than that of short hairs, whereas at high D e values, decreasing tip to first root hair distance increased PAE of root hairs at low density but decreased PAE of long hairs at very high density. Our models confirmed the benefits of increasing root hair density by increasing the number of trichoblast files rather than decreasing the trichoblast length. The combined effects of all four root hair traits on phosphorus acquisition was 371% greater than their additive effects, demonstrating substantial morphological synergy. In conclusion, our data support the hypothesis that the responses of root hairs to low phosphorus availability are synergistic, which may account for their coordinated regulation.  相似文献

Summary Retrograde CoS-impregnation was used to trace and map the course of sensory nerves and the distribution and innervation of the various proprioceptor types in all leg segments of Cupiennius salei, a Ctenid spider.1. Sensory nerve branches. In both the tibia and femur, axons of all proprioceptor types ascend in just two lateral nerves which do not merge with the main leg nerve until they reach the next proximal joint region. In the short segments — coxa, trochanter, patella, and tarsus — axons of the internal joint receptors often run separately from those of the other sensilla. Axons of the large lyriform slit sense organ at the dorsal metatarsus and of the trichobothria join with only a few hair axons and form their own nerve branches (Figs. 1, 2, 3).2. Proprioceptors. Each of the seven leg joints is supplied with at least one set of the well-known internal joint receptors, slit sensilla (single slits and lyriform organs), and long cuticular hairs. In addition, we found previously unnoticed hair plates on both sides of the coxa, near the prosoma/coxa joint; they are deflected by the articular membrane during joint movements (Fig. 4).3. Sensory cells and innervation. CoS-impregnation shows that each slit of the slit sense organs — be it a single slit or several slits in a lyriform organ — is innervated by two bipolar sensory cells (Fig. 6). We also confirm previous reports of multiple innervation in the internal joint receptors and in the long joint hairs and cuticular spines. Most of the ascending nerve branches run just beneath the cuticle for at least a short distance (Fig. 5); hence they are convenient sites for electrophysiological recordings of sensory activity even in freely walking spiders.  相似文献

Hypaphorine, an indole alkaloid from the ectomycorrhizal fungus Pisolithus tinctorius Coker & Couch., counteracts indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) activity and controls the rate of root hair elongation in Eucalyptus globulus ssp. bicostata. The present investigation shows that hypaphorine changes cytoskeletal organisation in elongating root hairs of the host. The actin cytoskeleton was investigated by two different fixation and labelling procedures, which gave similar results. In control root hairs, actin organisation was characterised by (i) an actin cap at the very tip region, (ii) a subapical region with reduced labelling and containing fine actin filaments, and (iii) axial bundles of actin filaments running from the subapical part to the base of the root hair. In the hypaphorine-treated root hairs no actin cap was distinguished. The fine actin filaments occurring in the subapical region were replaced by a few thick actin filament bundles that extended from the subapical region toward the root hair tip. In the hypaphorine-treated hairs the total number of actin filament bundles along most of the root hair length was significantly reduced, presumably due to aggregation of pre-existing actin filaments. The first signs of alteration to the cytoskeleton could be detected as soon as 15 min after hypaphorine treatment. In hypaphorine-treated, but not in control root hairs, a patch of aggregated microtubules regularly occurred at a distance of approximately 10 m from the tip, possibly as a consequence of changes induced by hypaphorine in the actin cytoskeleton. The hypaphorine-induced aggregations in the actin and microtubule cytoskeletons could stabilise the structure of cytoskeletal elements, which in turn could hinder the vesicle delivery at the tip necessary for elongation. Such cytoskeletal alterations may be a consequence of the antagonism between IAA and hypaphorine. The latter view was supported by restoration of the actin cytoskeleton in hypaphorine-treated root hairs by IAA application.  相似文献

This report describes the early cytological events in the infection byRhizobium leguminosarum biovartrifolii of the root hairs ofTrifolium repens seedlings kept alive on agar medium in glass slide culture experiment. The infection threads bearing rhizobia were formed as soon as the epidermal cells began to emerge as root hairs. On the top of some of these infected emerging root hairs, there were smoky, cell-debris-like bodies, which appeared to be derived from the cell wall dug by rhizobia. Similar bodies were also observed in longer root hairs. None of the root hair cells along the length of the roots which contained infection threads were curled or distorted. A substantial number of pink-colored nodules were later formed on the roots with non-curled infected root hairs.  相似文献

Defense responses triggered by dominant and recessive disease resistance ( R) genes are presumed to be regulated by different molecular mechanisms. In order to characterize the genes activated in defense responses against bacterial blight mediated by the recessive R gene xa13, two pathogen-induced subtraction cDNA libraries were constructed using the resistant rice line IRBB13—which carries xa13 —and its susceptible, near-isogenic, parental line IR24. Clustering analysis of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) identified 702 unique expressed sequences as being involved in the defense responses triggered by xa13; 16% of these are new rice ESTs. These sequences define 702 genes, putatively encoding a wide range of products, including defense-responsive genes commonly involved in different host-pathogen interactions, genes that have not previously been reported to be associated with pathogen-induced defense responses, and genes (38%) with no homology to previously described functional genes. In addition, R -like genes putatively encoding nucleotide-binding site/leucine rich repeat (NBS-LRR) and LRR receptor kinase proteins were observed to be induced in the disease resistance activated by xa13. A total of 568 defense-responsive ESTs were mapped to 588 loci on the rice molecular linkage map through bioinformatic analysis. About 48% of the mapped ESTs co-localized with quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for resistance to various rice diseases, including bacterial blight, rice blast, sheath blight and yellow mottle virus. Furthermore, some defense-responsive sequences were conserved at similar locations on different chromosomes. These results reveal the complexity of xa13 -mediated resistance. The information obtained in this study provides a large source of candidate genes for understanding the molecular bases of defense responses activated by recessive R genes and of quantitative disease resistance.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at The first two authors contributed equally to this workCommunicated by R. Summary In our study on non coded amino acids and their utilization in peptide chemistry we synthesized methylene-thio (CH2—S) and methyleneoxy (CH2—O) group containing amino acids and pseudodipeptides which could be used as building blocks for the construction of peptide hormone analogues. The (CH2—S) isoster of peptide bond exhibits increased flexibility, lipophility and resistance to proteolytic enzymes. This group exhibits similar properties as the isosteric disulfide bond in the side chain of cystine residue. The (CH2—O) isoster is moreover similar in its geometry to extended conformation of peptide bond. As a consequence, the changed profile of biological activities could be expected for peptide hormone analogues containing such isosteric moiety. The (CH2—S) isosters of the peptide bond were prepared by alkylation of thiolates of 2-mercaptocarboxylic acids, the disulfide bond by alkylation of cysteine or homocysteine. The (CH2—O) isosters were prepared by (AcO)4Rh2 catalyzed addition of carbenes of alkyl diazocarboxylates to N-protected aminoalcohols. Pseudodipeptides H—Leu—(CH2—S)—Gly—NH2 and H—Leu—(CH2—O)—Gly—NH2 were introduced into the C-terminal part of the oxytocin molecule using solution methods of peptide chemistry. Both inserted isosteric bonds were resistant against proteolytic degradation, the first one was found to decrease an enzymic cleavage of the distant Tyr2-Ile3 bond in the corresponding analogue, too. The (CH2—S) isosters of the disulfide bond containing an orthogonal protection of their-amino (Fmoc) and-(OAll, OH) or-(OBu+, OH) carboxylic groups were applied in the solid phase synthesis of the aminoterminal 1-deamino-15-pentadecapeptide of endothelin-I which represents a strong vasoactive agent. The solid phase synthesis was carried out by the step-wise protocol on the Rink or Merrifield type resin using orthogonally protected carba cystine building blocks.  相似文献

Puparium formation in Drosophila lebanonensis casteeli is obviously restricted to a certain phase in circadian oscillation. The question whether or not the release of molting hormone is the actual process which is controlled by the circadian oscillation could be approached by using molting hormone-specific changes in genome activity as indication for changes in hormone titer. The identification of hormone specific changes in the puffing pattern of polytene chromosomes should provide a basis for this study.—To this end, a chromosome map of the 7 polytene chromosome arms (1 acrocentric and 3 metacentric chromosomes) of the species was made. Changes in the puffing pattern associated with puparium formation are described and compared with those occurring in response to experimental administration of -ecdysone.—89 puffs were regularly observed in midthird instar larvae. Prior to puparium formation 5 new puffs arise, one at an early stage and 4 attaining their maximum size immediately before puparium formation. Concomitantly, 5 puffs increase considerably in size. These changes in the puffing pattern can be reproduced by injection of ecdysone.—Upon injection of the hormone a clear differentiation between fast reacting loci (within 30–60 min) and slow reacting loci (after 3–4 hours) can be found. As in other Drosophila species the immediate response (within 30–60 min) comprises more than one (5) locus. In memory of Professor Dr. J. Schultz.  相似文献

Sporotrichosis and histoplasmosis are deep mycosis with a high incidence in human beings in Brazil. In domestic animals histoplasmosis has been described only in dogs, but the occurence of sporotrichosis among domestic animals in Brazil has been described in dogs, cats, mules and asses. There is also a case of this disease reported in a chimpanzee (Pan troglodites). The purpose of this research was to perform an epidomiological study of these mycoses using delayed hypersensitivity tests (histoplasmin and sporotrichin) in Latin American wild mammals. This research was assayed using 96 healthy animals at Parque Zoológico de São Paulo, Brazil: Primates: 33Cebus apella — weeping-capuchin and 16Callithrix jacchus — marmoset; Procyonidae: 37Nasua nasua — coatimundi and 10 Felidae (Panthera onca — jaguar;Felis pardalis — ocelotFelis wiedii — margay;Felis tigrina — wild cat). For intradermic tests, the following antigens were used:Sporothrix schenkii cell suspension (sporotrichin, histoplasmin-filtrate),Histoplasma capsulatum cell suspension (histoplasmin), andHistoplasma capsulatum (polysaccharide). The positivity to histoplasmin was 44.79% (Cebidae 15.15%; Callithricidae 6.25%; Procyonidae 86.49% and Felidae 50.00%, respectively). With respect to sporotrichin, 30.21% (Cebidae 6.06%, Callithricidae 0.0%; Procyonidae 64.86% and Felidae 30.00% respectively). The pattern of infection is similar to that shown by human beings and this may suggest that these animals could be involved in the epidemiologic chain of sporotrichosis and histoplasmosis, the second most prevalent human deep mycoses in Brazil. It is important to point out the absence of similar studies in Latin American wild animals.  相似文献

The frequency of chromosome aberrations was compared in X-irradiated blood lymphocytes of Bufo marinus, B. calamita and B. pardalis which have similar chromosome numbers (2n=22) and karyotypes but differ in chromosomal DNA content and nuclear volume. — For each species the yield, per cell of centric exchange aberrations (dicentrics+rings) and of deletions (interstitial and terminal) increased approximately as the 1.5th power of the dose. — The 55% higher chromosomal DNA content of B. pardalis compared with both B. marinus and B. calamita resulted in the same increase in the frequency of deletions as a 55% increase in radiation dose, approximately doubling the yield. Both factors probably lead to a similar increase in the frequency of primary lesions from which the deletions are derived. — In contrast, an increase in chromosomal DNA content did not result in a higher yield of dicentric and ring exchanges, probably because the greater nuclear volume of B. pardalis (twice that of the other species) offset the potential increase in exchanges by increasing the average distance between chromosomes and chromosome arms. The data support the hypothesis that, in order to be involved in exchange, chromosome regions must be close together at the time of irradiation. The frequency of deletions is unaffected by changes in nuclear volume.  相似文献

The perfume syndrome and pollination by fragrance-collecting euglossine bees in the neotropic solanaceous genusCyphomandra was confirmed by field observations. In SE Brazil,C. sciadostylis was visited byEufriesea violaceae, andC. diploconos byEuglossa mandibularis; C. hartwegii was pollinated byEulaema meriana in Costa Rica. The primary attractant, fragrant droplets that ooze from the dorsally bulged connectives, is mopped up by the males with the forebasitarsi. Thereby, the poricidal thecae are inadvertently pushed causing the dry pollen to dust the bee's sternum. The number and direction of the pollen jets are related to pollinator size and stigma structure. The flowers are homogamous, selfsterile, and last three days. The androecium is optically non-contrasting or has cryptic colour. Flowers ofC. sciadostylis andC. diploconos undergo a colour change and an almost three-fold increase in corolla size when scent production and visits cease. The dorsal papillar epidermis of the connective is underlain by a glandular parenchyma typical of osmophores. GC techniques revealed germacrene D as the main component in the mentholic scent ofC. sciadostylis, ipsdienol, heneicosane, and tricosane as dominant in the nutmeg-like scent ofC. diploconos, and benzyl acetate and benzyl alcohol in the sweet fragrance ofC. hartwegii. In all cases, these were accompanied by numerous minor components of heterogeneous chemical nature.—Pollen release by means of a peculiar pneumatic bellows mechanism appears as a necessary and probably ubiquitous feature ofCyphomandra. Even a slight pressure exerted upon the thin, elastic thecal walls blows pollen jets through the pores. Unusual anatomic changes accompany anther maturation. Initially voluminous parenchymatic locular intumescences (placentoids) contract completely during meiosis, then expand once more when the pollen is ripe, pushing the grains against the locular wall, and contract a second time, allowing air to enter the thecae.—Cyphomandra pinetorum was found to be exceptional in exhibiting a pollen flower syndrome, and not cryptical but optically contrasting yellow anthers, as known forSolanum.  相似文献

Summary The role of abscisic acid (ABA) in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) zygotic embryogenesis was analysed. ABA and ABA ß-D-glucopyranosyl ester (ABA-GE) changes were determined in seeds and fruit tissues — placenta and mesocarp — during seed development, which was defined with eight embryo stages: from globular (stage 1) to mature embryo (stage 8). In whole seeds, ABA changes paralleled fresh and dry weight pattern curves and could be characterized by a high increase during embryo growth followed by a decrease as the seed matured and dehydrated. Moreover this dehydration phase led, at stage 8, to a new ABA distribution within the seed, preferentially into integument and embryo. Fruit tissue analyses provided new information about the ABA origin in seeds. ABA-GE levels were also measured and the results suggested different ABA metabolism in seed and fruit tissues.Abbreviations ABA abscisic acid - ABA-GE abscisic acid ß-D-glucopyranosyl ester - ABTS 2,2 — azino — bis (3 — ethylben-zthiazoline — 6 — sulfonic acid) - BHT butylhydroxytoluene - DW dry weight - ELISA Ezyme linked immunosorbent assay - HPLC high performance liquid chromatography  相似文献
