The potential energy produced by the Auger cascade due to the charging of atoms is evaluated and incorporated into conventional treatment of energy deposition. A straightforward method for calculating this energy is presented. For the photoelectric interaction the potential energy is shown to be at least as important as L-shell fluorescence in calculating the electron kerma. For radioactive decay by electron capture or internal conversion, it is shown that, for small (less than 100 nm) targets containing the decay, the atomic charging can be the dominant contribution to the total energy deposited in the target.  相似文献

Marine organisms have been recognized as rich sources of bioactive compounds with valuable nutraceutical and pharmaceutical potentials. Recently, marine bioactive peptides have gained much attention because of their numerous health beneficial effects. Notably, these peptides exhibit various biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-hypertensive, anti-human immunodeficiency virus, anti-proliferative, anticoagulant, calcium-binding, anti-obesity and anti-diabetic activities. This review mainly presents biological activities of peptides from marine organisms and emphasizing their potential applications in foods as well as pharmaceutical areas.  相似文献

Biological costs and benefits to plant-microbe interactions in the rhizosphere   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16  
This review looks briefly at plants and their rhizosphere microbes, the chemical communications that exist, and the biological processes they sustain. Primarily it is the loss of carbon compounds from roots that drives the development of enhanced microbial populations in the rhizosphere when compared with the bulk soil, or that sustains specific mycorrhizal or legume associations. The benefits to the plant from this carbon loss are discussed. Overall the general rhizosphere effect could help the plant by maintaining the recycling of nutrients, through the production of hormones, helping to provide resistance to microbial diseases and to aid tolerance to toxic compounds. When plants lack essential mineral elements such as P or N, symbiotic relationships can be beneficial and promote plant growth. However, this benefit may be lost in well-fertilized (agricultural) soils where nutrients are readily available to plants and symbionts reduce growth. Since these rhizosphere associations are commonplace and offer key benefits to plants, these interactions would appear to be essential to their overall success.  相似文献

We investigated the DNA damage from Auger electrons emitted from incorporated stable iodine (127I), following photoelectric absorption of external x-rays. The effectiveness of the Auger electrons in producing DNA double-strand breaks (DSB) was determined theoretically, using Monte Carlo simulations of the radiation physics and chemistry, and was shown to be in reasonable agreement with DNA damage measured using the comet assay. The DSB yields were measured in CHO cells for 60Co (as a non-Auger-promoting radiation) and for tungsten-filtered 100 kVp x-rays capable of producing Auger electron emission. The theoretical study showed that on average, 2.5 Auger electrons were emitted for N-shell orbital vacancies and up to 10 Auger electrons were emitted from L1-shell vacancies. These Auger bursts produced approximately 0.03 DSB per N-shell vacancy and 0.3 DSB per K-shell or L-shell vacancy. The calculated yield of DSB from Auger cascades per unit dose (1 Gy) in water was approximately 1.7 for tungsten-filtered 100 kVp x-rays, assuming 20% IUdR substitution of thymidine. The comet assay yielded an experimental value of 3.6±1.6 per 1 Gy for the same conditions. The Monte Carlo simulations also demonstrated a high complexity of DSB produced by Auger cascades with virtually all DSB from inner shell orbitals (i.e. K, L shells) accompanied by compounded strand breakage and base damage, indicating a difficult lesion to repair. This finding agrees well with comet assay results of DNA repair, where an increase in the DSB yield in IUdR-sensitized cells was shown to persist after a time of 24 h. We conclude that Auger cascades in iodine produce a modest increase in the number of initial strand breaks of the order of 10% but the complex nature of these DSB makes them very difficult to repair or potentially prone to misrepair. The accentuated DNA damage may have major consequences for cell survival and may be exploitable in kilovoltage photon activation therapy (PAT) of tumors sensitized with iodine. The literature addressing evolutionary reasons for the striped patterns of zebra coats is reviewed here. Possible mechanisms, and the evidence for and against them, are discussed. These mechanisms span four general themes: protection from predators; social functions; thermoregulation; and protection from tsetse flies. The last is the only hypothesis that has been tested experimentally, and the results of these tests are inconclusive. Additionally or alternatively, although stripes apparently increase zebra visibility in daylight, it is at least plausible that they provide effective cryptic protection from predators in poor light, although critical testing has not been attempted. Other related evolutionary questions are raised and suggestions made for future research.  相似文献

The pattern of utilization of Colophospermum mopane by elephant was investigated in a semi‐arid savanna, the Venetia‐Limpopo Nature Reserve, South Africa, using an animal‐based approach. C. mopane is a staple food item in the diet of elephant, with most individual trees being utilized lightly (< 10% of biomass removed). Utilization of branch, foliage and main stems accounted for most of the utilization of trees < 4 m high whilst utilization of bark accounted for the majority of utilization of trees > 4 m high. The most preferred height of utilization of branches was < 1 m above ground level, reflecting the short stature of C. mopane in the study area. Elephant selected C. mopane trees < 2 m in height that had been previously utilized by them; specifically trees where the terminal part of the main stem had been previously broken and had been coppiced (hedging). The preferred size range of branches utilized by elephant was 0.946–1.718 cm in diameter; hedged C. mopane trees in the 1–2 m category had, on average, significantly more branches within this size range than non‐hedged trees. This hedging of C. mopane appears to have increased the availability of a preferred food item.  相似文献

Biological control of leaf damage caused by pathogens, insects and frost offers the prospect of effective plant protection without the shortcomings associated with chemical pesticides. Improved strains of microbial biocontrol agents, through genetic engineering and by non-recombinant DNA techniques, can be anticipated. However, more information is needed on the nature of the leaf environment, and on the microbial characteristics determining success there, before major advances can be made.  相似文献

Many scattered lizard groups have small skin invaginations in such places as the neck, axilla, groin and postfemoral region. These frequently contain feeding chiggers (the larvae of trombiculid mites) which, in general, are much commoner on species with pockets than on those without. Mite pockets appear to have evolved many times, being found in at least five families (Iguanidae, Chamaeleonidae, Gekkonidae, Lacertidae, Scincidae) and are most abundant in warm areas that are not extremely dry. They are present in newly hatched animals and embryos of viviparous forms and so cannot be produced in direct response to the mites. Typically, the epidermis of infested pockets is hyperplastic and resilient, rapidly repairing damage caused by feeding mites, and the dermis contains dense concentrations of lymphoid cells. It is suggested that mite pockets have evolved in forms prone to trombiculid infestation and ameliorate the damage that this causes by concentrating chiggers in places that are equipped to minimize the harm they do.  相似文献

RTX toxins are a family of related exotoxins with hemolytic, leukotoxic and leukocyte-stimulating activities that are produced by a diverse array of Gram-negative bacteria.

Lipopolysaccharide might be required for the maximal production of some RTX toxins and might be a cofactor in some of the biological effects of RTX toxins.  相似文献

Increased numbers of autophagosomes/autophagic vacuoles are seen in a variety of physiological and pathological states in the nervous system. In many cases, it is unclear if this phenomenon is the result of increased autophagic activity or decreased autophagosome-lysosome fusion. The functional significance of autophagy and its relationship to cell death in the nervous system is also poorly understood. In this review, we have considered these issues in the context of acute neuronal injury and a range of chronic neurodegenerative conditions, including the Lurcher mouse, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's and prion diseases. While many issues remain unresolved, these conditions raise the possibility that autophagy can have either deleterious or protective effects depending on the specific situation and stage in the pathological process.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of edge effects on communities of galling insects in the Brazilian Amazon. For this, were performed data analyses comparing the galling richness between disturbed and undisturbed areas, and subsequently evaluated the richness of galling at different distances from the forest edge. We registered 194 galling insect morphotypes in 116 host plant species. Galling insect richness was more pronounced in disturbed areas and closer to the forest edge, both to community in general as to specific host plant taxa. These results indicate positive responses of galling insect richness to edge effects in forest environments. Edge effect could influence the galling distribution in modified habitats because increases the stress conditions of the plants and decreases the attack pressure of natural enemies.  相似文献

The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is an endangered exotic canid with less than 5500 animals remaining in the wild. Despite numerous strategies to conserve this species, numbers of free-living animals are in decline. It is a highly social species with a complex pack structure: separate male and female dominant hierarchies with, typically, participation of subdominant adults in the rearing of the dominant breeding pairs' pups. Basic reproductive knowledge is largely missing in this species, with only limited information available on the profile of reproductive hormones, based on non-invasive endocrine monitoring. The dominant or alpha male and female are reproductively active and the subdominants are generally reproductively suppressed. However, the occasional production of litters by subdominant females and evidence of multiple paternity within litters suggests that fertility of subordinates is not completely inhibited. In this respect, there are still considerable gaps in our knowledge about the mechanisms governing reproduction and reproductive suppression in African wild dogs, particularly the influence of dominance and pack structure on both male and female fertility. Given concerns over the long-term survival of this species, further research in this area is essential to provide valuable information for their captive breeding and conservation. Reproductive information can also be applied to the development of Assisted Reproductive Techniques for this species; the utility of which in African wild dog conservation is also discussed.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the antidepressant-like effect of saponins (SCLM) extracted from a traditional Chinese medicine, Chaihu-jia-longgu-muli-tang (CLM), in mice and rats using the tail suspension test (TST) and forced swimming test (FST). Subchronic administration of 100 and 200 mg/kg (p.o.) SCLM for 7 days reduced immobility time in the TST and FST in mice and also decreased immobility time at 70 and 140 mg/kg (p.o.) in the FST in rats. The results also showed that the anti-immobility activity of SCLM in these two tests is dose-dependent, without accompanying significant effects on locomotor activity. In addition, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) assays showed that 25, 50 and 100 microg/ml SCLM or 10 microM fluoxetine (FLU), protected PC12 cells from the lesion induced by 10 microM corticosterone (Cort) treatment for 48 h. In the fura-2/AM (acetoxymethyl ester) labeling assay, 50 and 100 microg/ml SCLM, 10 microM FLU attenuated the intracellular Ca2+ overloading induced by 200 microM Cort treatment for 48 h in PC12 cells. Using RT-PCR, the mRNA level of nerve growth factor (NGF) was also detected. Treatment with SCLM (50, 100 microg/ml) for 48 h elevated the NGF mRNA expression in PC12 cells. In summary, these results suggest that SCLM possesses an antidepressant-like activity in behavioral models that might be mediated via the cytoprotective action shown in PC12 cells.  相似文献

The "Rosetta Stone" hypothesis proposes that the existence of a fusion protein in some organisms predicts that the separate polypeptides function in the same biochemical pathway in other organisms and may physically interact. In Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans, NitFhit protein is composed of two domains, a fragile histidine triad homolog and a bacterial and plant nitrilase homolog. We assessed the biological effects of mammalian Nit1 expression in comparison with Fhit and observed that: 1) Nit1 expression was observed in most normal tissues and overlapped partially with Fhit expression; 2) Nit1-deficient mouse kidney cells exhibited accelerated proliferation, resistance to DNA damage stress, and increased cyclin D1 expression; 3) cyclin D1 was up-regulated in Nit1 null mammary gland and skin; 4) Nit1 overexpression induced caspase-dependent apoptosis in vitro; and 5) Nit1 allele deficiency led to increased incidence of N-nitrosomethylbenzylamine-induced murine forestomach tumors. Thus, the biological effects of Nit1 expression are similar to Fhit effects. Adenoviruses carrying recombinant NIT1 and FHIT induced apoptosis in Fhit- and Nit1-deficient cells, respectively, suggesting that Nit1-Fhit interaction is not essential for function of either protein. The results suggest that Nit1 and Fhit share tumor suppressor signaling pathways, while localization of the NIT1 gene at a stable, rather than fragile, chromosome site explains the paucity of gene alterations and in frequent loss of expression of the NIT1 gene in human malignancies.  相似文献
