The marine otter (Lontra felina) has a patchy distribution associated with rocky coastlines along the Pacific coast of South America. In Peru marine otters are found from La Libertad (8°04′S) to Tacna (18°09′S), however, few studies have assessed its population and conservation status. To assess marine otters' current distribution along the Peru coastline, we conducted visual surveys and collected environmental characteristics such as human presence and habitat type. We surveyed 20 locations from five regions where otter presence was based on signs of detection (spraints, food leftovers, tracks, or direct observations). In addition, data on human presence, habitat type, and geographic location were also collected. Across the 20 locations, 268 sections were scanned, and marine otters were detected in 90% (n = 18) of locations and in 19% (n = 52) of sections. Spraints were the most frequent sign detected while direct observations occurred only in seven locations. Our analysis indicates habitat features play an important role in marine otter presence, with habitats with large rocks providing preferred conditions. Our study provides information on marine otter distribution along the Peru coastline that can assist in the identification of locations for focused conservation initiatives and strategies, which should be coordinated among regions to strengthen their design and implementation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT River otters (Lontra canadensis) select specific habitat features when establishing latrines, but no studies have described latrine features in arid and semiarid environments. We developed a model describing those habitat features that influence otter latrine site selection on rivers in arid and semiarid watersheds of western Colorado, USA. River otters selected latrine sites with the presence of beaver (Castor canadensis) activity, large prominent rocks, adjacent to deeper water, with shading over the site, and rock or cliff overstory. Our model provides a robust predictive tool for identifying river otter latrine sites in arid environments of southwestern North America.  相似文献

We studied the habitat preferences of Eurasian river otters (Lutra lutra) using the distribution patterns of the numbers of spraints and sprainting spots of otters, as well as related environmental variables (habitat zone, river management, bank type, vegetation coverage, width, depth, etc.) in two streams. The numbers of otter spraints and sprainting spots were sampled monthly in two streams on Geoje Island, Republic of Korea, from January to December 2004. Additional environmental variables were measured at the sampling sites. A self-organizing map (SOM), which is an unsupervised artificial neural network, was used to characterize the habitat preferences of otters. In our results, the SOM classified three different groups of study sites based on their habitat conditions, and the habitat differences were effectively visualized on the trained SOM map. Otters showed spatial and temporal dynamics in the numbers of spraints and sprainting spots, and revealed habitat preferences for shallow, narrow areas of streams and edges of water that were not far from reservoirs but covered with trees and shrubs. Additionally, otters preferred an environment in which weirs reduced the drift of water and gathered fishes and had a natural type of stream bank; these findings are relevant for river management. Otters adapted to places close to roads, residential areas, and agricultural areas with some tolerance of human interference.  相似文献

ABSTRACT In many research projects, reliability of collected data is dependent on reliability of field observers. However, it is uncommon for observer reliability to be either measured or reported in wildlife research. We tested whether observer skill affected outcomes of a northern river otter (Lontra canadensis) track survey conducted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Observers recorded presence of tracks at bridge sites (n = 250) throughout a 27-county region in east Texas, USA. Logistic regression indicated that observers were significantly associated with frequency of reported otter tracks. Because observers were not assigned to bridges at random, we tested and found associations between the bridges surveyed by each observer (SURVEY ROUTE) and habitat variables (WATERSHED, VEGETATION-TYPE, WATER-TYPE, BRIDGE-AREA) that may have influenced otter presence and probability of detection. A standardized tracker evaluation procedure indicated that experienced observers (n = 7) misidentified 37% of otter tracks. Additionally, 26% of tracks from species determined to be “otter-like” were misidentified as otter tracks. We recommend that observer skill in identification of animal tracks and other indirect signs be measured to detect and reduce observer errors in wildlife monitoring.  相似文献

Semi-aquatic mammals are dependent upon streams and riparian areas, which are a product of the landscapes they drain. Both local stream morphology and surrounding land use are likely to have important influences on current occupancy of semi-aquatic mammals and potentially affect future geographic distributions. We identified aspects of the riparian system and stream structure at multiple scales that relate to the presence of river otter (Lontra canadensis) and mink (Neovison vison) to better understand how changing landscapes affect occupancy dynamics of these semi-aquatic mammals and to facilitate future monitoring and management. We estimated multi-season occupancy using 103 sites sampled over 6 seasonal sampling periods in southern Illinois, USA (44,526 km2) during 2012–2014. We hypothesized river otter and mink occupancy were related to multiple aspects of landscape and local habitat attributes including land cover, water availability, human disturbance, and stream characteristics. Occupancy of river otter was predicted by large stream size, less developed area near the stream site, and proximity to areas with reintroduced or remnant populations of river otter. Mink were more likely to occupy sites with small streams and decreased water availability near the site. However, top models for both species had low weights and high uncertainty for multiple variables. Habitat-based models may not be the best predictors of occupancy for these carnivores because they are more likely to respond to prey diversity or availability, but landscape changes that decrease natural water availability and increase human disturbance to the stream at the local scale are likely to negatively affect river otter. © 2019 The Authors. In the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM), reefs built by eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica, provide critical habitat within shallow estuaries, and recent efforts have focused on restoring reefs to benefit nekton and benthic macroinvertebrates. We compared nekton and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages at historic, newly created (<5 years) and old (>6 years) shell and rock substrate reefs. Using crab traps, gill‐nets, otter trawls, cast nets, and benthic macroinvertebrate collectors, 20 shallow reefs (<5 m) in the northern GOM were sampled throughout the summer of 2011. We compared nekton and benthic assemblage abundance, diversity and composition across reef types. Except for benthic macroinvertebrate abundance, which was significantly higher on old rock reefs as compared to historic reefs, all reefs were similar to historic reefs, suggesting created reefs provide similar support of nekton and benthic assemblages as historic reefs. To determine refuge value of oyster structure for benthic macroinvertebrates compared to bare bottom, we tested preferences of juvenile crabs across depth and refuge complexity in the presence and absence of adult blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus). Juveniles were more likely to use deep water with predators present only when provided oyster structure. Provision of structural material to support and sustain development of benthic and mobile reef communities may be the most important factor in determining reef value to these assemblages, with biophysical characteristics related to reef location influencing assemblage patterns in areas with structure; if so, appropriately locating created reefs is critical.  相似文献

Otters are threatened by habitat loss and the pollution of their riverine habitat. Environmental impacts on top predators are often the first indication of habitat deterioration. It is rare for predator‐prey‐habitats to be monitored over long time intervals (decades), however necessary that may be. Here, we report on the decline in otter relative abundance in a previously pristine habitat and speculate on its causes. We surveyed sign of coexisting otters (Aonyx capensis and Lutra maculicollis) along a river in Kamberg Nature Reserve in uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, KwaZulu‐Natal, South Africa. The area, Stillerust, lies downstream of a commercial dairy farm and a rural village–subsistence farming area. Data collected recently were compared with two previous surveys, carried out in 1972–1974 and 1993–1994, and were also compared with a pristine section of river in the nature reserve, upstream of the farming areas. At Stillerust, the number of spraint (scat) sites found, for each otter species, approximated only 25% of those recorded in the earlier studies. In the pristine section of the river, the amount of sign and abundance of otters were similar to those recorded in 1993. Assessments of stream biota and water quality analyses revealed negative changes in the river below the pristine area, down to, and including, Stillerust. Visible signs of pollution were evident. Since the 1970s, the rural village population has increased ca eightfold, and the commercial farm has changed from an extensive livestock enterprize to an intensive dairy farm.  相似文献

Some factors influencing the distribution of otters (Lutra lutra)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The number of sites at which evidence of otters was found and the total number of signs were recorded on fifty 5-km stretches of rivers in Wales and the West Midlands of England. Data were collected on fifteen parameters of habitat considered to be of importance to otters and subjected to a multivariate analysis.
Evidence of otters was found at thirty-four stretches. The distribution of sites and signs was correlated with the presence of potential holts (of which 107 were found) and with mature sycamore and ash trees. The measured variables accounted for 52 5% of the overall variation in otter sites and 60 2% of the variation in otter signs. The conservation of otters is discussed in light of the results of the analysis.  相似文献

Distributions of Daubenton's bat (Myotis daubentonii), common pipistrelle, (Pipistrellus pipistrellus), and soprano pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus) were investigated along and altitudinal gradient of the Lledr River, Conwy, North Wales, and presence assessed in relation to the water surface condition, presence/absence of bank‐side trees, and elevation. Ultrasound recordings of bats made on timed transects in summer 1999 were used to quantify habitat usage. All species significantly preferred smooth water sections of the river with trees on either one or both banks; P. pygmaeus also preferred smooth water with no trees. Bats avoided rough and cluttered water areas, as rapids may generate high‐frequency echolocation‐interfering noise and cluttered areas present obstacles to flight. In lower river regions, detections of bats reflected the proportion of suitable habitat available. At higher elevations, sufficient habitat was available; however, bats were likely restricted due to other factors such as a less predictable food source. This study emphasizes the importance of riparian habitat, bank‐side trees, and smooth water as foraging habitat for bats in marginal upland areas until a certain elevation, beyond which bats in these areas likely cease to forage. These small‐scale altitudinal differences in habitat selection should be factored in when designing future bat distribution studies and taken into consideration by conservation planners when reviewing habitat requirements of these species in Welsh river valleys, and elsewhere within the United Kingdom.  相似文献

Streams and adjacent riparian habitats represent linked terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems that exchange materials and energy. Recognized relationships among apex predators and ecosystem biodiversity led us to hypothesize that these predators in riparian‐stream systems were more likely to be found in sites with high stream quality, defined as increased ecosystem function and integrity. In our freshwater study system, river otter Lontra canadensis and mink Neovison vison play critical roles as apex predators. We used multi‐season occupancy modelling across three sampling years (2012–2014) to compare aspects of the stream communities that explain occupancy dynamics of river otter and mink, including their interactions with other semi‐aquatic mammals. We surveyed for semi‐aquatic mammals at 77 sites in 12 major watersheds in southern Illinois, USA (44 526 km2). Naïve occupancy differed among years but generally increased for river otter, and remained high (≥93.5%) for mink. Increasing substrate availability increased detectability of river otter, whereas mink detection varied by survey period. Occupancy of river otter during the initial survey period was higher in sites closer to reintroduction points. Probability of colonization of river otter was positively associated with macroinvertebrate index of biotic integrity, fish species richness, and beaver presence. Sites with high species richness of fish families preferred by river otter also had increased river otter persistence. Mink occupied sites with increased fish richness, muskrat presence and mussel community index. Taken together, our results show occupancy of both mink and river otter were predicted by aspects of prey diversity and presence, indicating the importance of community composition in occupancy dynamics of riparian predators. Ultimately, these relationships suggest that habitat heterogeneity and system stability are important to apex predator site use. However, the relative role of bottom–up and top–down forcing in stream systems remains to be resolved.  相似文献

Aim Land use intensity has been recognized as one of the major determinants of native species declines. The re‐expansion of species previously constrained by habitat degradation has been rarely investigated. Here, we use site occupancy models incorporating imperfect detection to identify the land use drivers of the re‐expansion of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra). Location Czech Republic. Methods We applied multi‐season occupancy models to otter presence–non‐detection data collected in three national surveys (1992, 2000, 2006) at 552 sites (11.2 × 12 km grid cells). Model parameters included site occupancy, colonization and extinction probabilities, and detection probability at a sub‐site level. We modelled changes in occupancy over time as a function of agricultural, urban and industrial land use and change in the extent of agricultural land use. Results Under the best fitting model, occupancy was estimated to be 34.6% in 1992, 51.3% in 2000 and 83.7% in 2006. Detection probability was neither perfect nor constant. Occupancy probability in 1992 was negatively related to land use gradients. Colonization was more likely to occur where a reduction in agricultural land was larger. Variation in extinction and colonization rates along land use gradients resulted in increased occupancy in industrial and especially urban landscapes. Conversely, occupancy remained almost unchanged along agricultural gradients. Main conclusions Dynamics of otter expansion were strongly associated with the two main patterns of the rapid environmental transition that has taken place in the Czech Republic since the early 1990s. Results show that a reduction in intensive agricultural land use led to an increase in otter distribution, providing evidence of the impact of agricultural land use on stream ecosystems. Moreover, otters recolonized urban and industrial landscapes, probably as a result of extensive reduction in water pollution from point sources. Our results suggest that active conservation of otter populations should focus on restoration of freshwater habitat at large scales, especially in agricultural landscapes.  相似文献

Habitat selection by juvenile lemon sharks,Negaprion brevirostris   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Synopsis We surgically implanted ultrasonic transmitters in 38 lemon sharks,Negaprion brevirostris, and manually tracked the sharks for 1–153 days. This yielded 2281 positional fixes recorded at 15-min intervals. We used these positional data with availability data of four environmental variables (water depth, temperature, salinity, and bottom type), sampled at 213 stations along 15 transects, to examine usage of habitat. All sharks used contours of water depth, water temperature, and bottom type disproportionately to the availability of these variables in the study site. Specifically, juvenile lemon sharks selected shallower, warmer water with an underlying rocky or sandy substrate, perhaps for predator avoidance. This is the first report on habitat selection by any elasmobranch.  相似文献

Ancient wood-pastures are facing a major decline in several European countries. These habitats are of great importance for biodiversity because of their special semi-natural character that increases landscape variability and connectivity. In this paper we examine the habitat preferences of the tree pipit Anthus trivialis in an ancient oak wood-pasture, the Breite Natural Reserve, central Romania, with the aim of identifying the most significant habitat variables correlated with the presence of this species. In this way, we aim to highlight the need for conservation management of both the species and this particular habitat type, which are both declining across Europe. We found that the number of oaks with a diameter at breast height (d.b.h) > 1.27 m (equating to a circumference of 4 m) was the only variable with significant positive effect on the presence of the tree pipit. Shrub cover had significant negative effect on presence. Tree canopy cover, the clumping tendency of trees and distance from forest had no effect on the presence of this species in the study area. Our results show that the habitat requirements for the maintenance of the tree pipit impose the same active management needs as those for the maintenance of the ancient wood-pasture character of the Breite Natural Reserve, namely the control against hornbeam invasion and ensured viability of new oak sapling generations.  相似文献

以关帝山4 hm2云杉次生林样地为研究对象,按照CTFS(Center for Tropical Forest Science)技术规范对样地树木进行连续定位监测。

The Canary Islands great spotted woodpecker Dendrocopos major canariensis is an endemic bird restricted to the Pinus canariensis forests of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Classification tree models were applied to explore the relationship of the occurrence of this picid and habitat variables between two contrasting periods (breeding vs. non-breeding seasons) and for the entire annual cycle. During the reproductive period the availability of mature trees (DBH > 60 cm), and snags (dead trees), for nesting and roosting, characterize the breeding territory. Outside the breeding season the choice of locations was driven by a tree cover larger than 28.5% and the presence of trees taller than 8.5 m on average, a pattern explained by the availability of pine seeds in the cones of well-developed canopies, and less so by predation risk. Overall, during the annual cycle, well-developed canopy sites influenced the presence of this picidae (tree cover > 38%) and on more open sites (<38%) the presence of mature trees (DBH> 60 cm) became the second most important predictor of occurrence. We suggest that food abundance and availability could be the ultimate factor explaining the intra-annual variation observed, with the availability of snags being an important factor during nesting. In the range of this endemic, we recommend selective cuts in pine plantations, to allow the trees to set seed and improve their crops, minimizing the elimination of snags, and killing some large pine trees if the priority is to expand the distributional range of the woodpecker.  相似文献

Otters are elusive semi-aquatic mammals, occurring in low densities and difficult to count. A study was conducted in 15 stretches (10–12 km) of four tributaries of the Ebro River, with the aims to understand spatial and temporal changes in otter abundance and breeding success and the causes of such variations. Between 1990 and 2009, both otter parameters were assessed by means of visual spring–early summer censuses, carried out by sets of observers located every 500 m. A total of 134 censuses were carried out, involving 4,540 twilight watches (7,896.5 h) and 520 otter sightings were recorded. Also, 39 different habitat characteristics (including prey species) were established for each stretch. Otter abundance was assessed by means of three indexes related to the census effort and the length and surface units (in terms of otter habitat). Excluding the upper stretches, we found on average 0.07–0.26 adult and subadults per kilometre (1.45–6.26/km2). Important interannual fluctuations in otter abundance and breeding success were found in some Pyrenean stretches located downstream of a large reservoir. This was linked to the effect of autumn floods (in part due to the opening of dams) on the fish stocks (mainly Barbels). Similar habitat conditions resulted in similar abundances between stretches, and different habitat conditions generated different abundances in adjacent stretches of the same river. No significant differences were found for litter size between small cubs (1.60 ± 0.70 cubs per litter) and large cubs (1.39 ± 0.50) as a whole, but differences between stretches were found. On average we found between 0.009 and 0.130 large cubs per year per kilometre. Otters bred more successfully in stretches with higher otter densities. Otter abundance and breeding success correlated negatively with altitude as a consequence of the interaction of several habitat characteristics with altitude. The stepwise linear regression linked the number of adult otters per kilometre with the ecosystem production (chlorophyll a concentration), while the number of large cubs per kilometre per year was linked with the food (fish + crayfish) abundance. The findings bring about a consistent and congruent scenario of otter abundance and breeding success explained by the different steps along the food chain.  相似文献

Habitat characteristics are primary determinants of nearshore marine communities. However, biological drivers like predation can also be important for community composition. Sea otters (Enhydra lutris ssp.) are a salient example of a keystone species exerting top‐down control on ecosystem community structure. The translocation and subsequent population growth and range expansion of the northern sea otter (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) in Washington State over the last five decades has created a spatio‐temporal gradient in sea otter occupation time and density, and acts as a natural experiment to quantify how sea otter population status and habitat type influence sea otter diet. We collected focal observations of sea otters foraging at sites across the gradient in varying habitat types between 2010 and 2017. We quantified sea otter diet composition and diversity, and long‐term rates of energy gain across the gradient. We found that sea otter diet diversity was positively correlated with cumulative sea otter density, while rate of energy gain was negatively correlated with cumulative density. Additionally, we found that habitat type explained 1.77 times more variance in sea otter diet composition than sea otter cumulative density. Long‐term diet studies can provide a broader picture of sea otter population status in Washington State.  相似文献

Heavy metals found in construction waste can enter soil and water bodies through surface runoff and leachate, where they represent an environmental hazard. In this study, we investigate the pollution characteristics and ecological risks of eight heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and As) in the soils of an unofficial construction waste landfill site in Beijing, China. The results indicate that long-term disposal of construction waste in the dry riverbed can reduce the pH value of the soil, increase the soil organic carbon content, and affect the total amount and distribution of heavy metals. Moreover, the landfill site pollutes the external soil environment, with Cd, Zn, Pb, and Cu as the characteristic pollutants. According to the Nemerow comprehensive pollution index and potential ecological risk assessment, heavy metal pollution decreases in the following order: internal soil > bottom soil > boundary soil. Cd, Zn, Pb, and Cu pollution is higher in the internal region, with single heavy-metal pollution indexes (Pi) of 1.41, 1.65, 1.26, and 1.28, respectively. Conversely, the Pi for Cr is higher in boundary and bottom soils (1.91 and 1.94, respectively). Risk assessment codes indicate that Cd and Mn pose the greatest environmental risk (31.9% and 17.8%, respectively) as they have the highest effective content, bioavailability, and mobility. Thus, environmental monitoring is a necessity for these metals.  相似文献
