Erratum

In the recent article by Xiaodun He [Arch. Insect Biochem. Physiol. 54:68–76, 2003], the reaction scheme on page 73 was missing the letters of the enzyme: EH, from the third line of the scheme. The reaction scheme is reprinted herein.     

The oldest illustration of Chinese crinoid calyx: Annotated translation of “Cupressocrinus abbreviatus” reported by Fritz Frech in 1911

The early history on the discovery of the first Chinese crinoid calyx of “Cupressocrinus abbreviatus” (now Halocrinites schlotheimii Steininger, 1831) remains unclear. The first record of “C. abbreviatus” was reported by Fritz Frech in 1911. It was included in the fifth and the last volume of the series titled China by the German traveler and explorer Ferdinand Freiherr von Richthofen. The cover page, title page, and prologue are informative; thus, they are explained and translated in detail. Richthofen's specimen is still the oldest documented cupressocrinitid calyx known in China today. Discovery of a second cupressocrinitid specimen confirms the existence of this family in China. Current taxonomic positions of the Chinese specimens are discussed.

Biochemistry of the Infarcted Heart

I am honored by the invitation to contribute to a volume in Neuroscience, dedicated to Professor Galoyan, whose accomplishments in the field of neuroscience and circulation have been unique. In his book, Dr. Galoyan has summarized the results of his discovery of cardioactive neurohormones. His discovery of biosynthesis of cytokines in the neurosecretory cells of the hypothalamus have opened a new page in immunology.     

Optimizing Home-Based Software DSM Protocols

Software DSMs can be categorized into homeless and home-based systems both have strengths and weaknesses when compared to each other. This paper introduces optimization methods to exploit advantages and offset disadvantages of the home-based protocol in the home-based software DSM JIAJIA. The first optimization reduces the overhead of writes to home pages through a lazy home page write detection scheme. The normal write detection scheme write-protects shared pages at the beginning of a synchronization interval, while the lazy home page write detection delays home page write-protecting until the page is first fetched in the interval so that home pages that are not cached by remote processors do not need to be write-protected. The second optimization avoids fetching the whole page on a page fault through dividing a page into blocks and fetching only those blocks that are dirty with respect to the faulting processor. A write vector table is maintained for each shared page in its home to record for each processor which block(s) has been modified since the processor fetched the page last time. The third optimization adaptively migrates home of a page to the processor most frequently writes to the page to reduce twin and diff overhead. Migration information is piggybacked on barrier messages and no additional communication is required for the migration. Performance evaluation with some well-accepted benchmarks and real applications shows that the above optimization methods can reduce page faults, message amounts, and diffs dramatically and consequently improve performance significantly.

Erratum to Melissa R. Junttila et al., Cell Cycle Volume 7, Issue 5; pp. 592-596

In the review “Mechanisms of MYC stabilization in human malignancies” by Melissa R. Junttila and Jukka Westermarck Cell Cycle 2008; 7:592–6) there was a minor error in the text. The original statement on page 593, line 17 reads: A prolyl isomerase, Pin-1, binds phosphorylated S62 and T58 of MYC, and isomerizes MYC at Proline 59. The author’s correction states that in contrast to proline 59 mentioned in the text, based on the available knowledge Pin-1 rather isomerizes proline 63 on c-Myc.     

Erratum

The reproduction quality of figure 1 from the article, “Pathology of the adult central nervous system induced by genetic inhibition of programmed cell death in Drosophila pupae” by Kazue Usui‐Aoki, Yoshiro Nakano and Daisuke Yamamoto (DOI: 10.1002/arch.10011) which appeared in Volume 49, Number 2, 2002 on pages 94–101 was subpar. Predicted genetic gain and realised gain in stand volume of Eucalyptus globulus

Realised gains in stand volume of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. families at 7–9 years were compared with gains predicted at 3.5 years. Gain predictions were based on height, diameter at breast height (DBH), sectional area, and stem volume for 153 full-sib families and 18 commercial checks in five-tree line plots on three West Australian sites. Single-site narrow-sense heritability estimates were 0.12–0.24 for height, 0.08–0.12 for DBH, 0.09–0.13 for sectional area, and 0.14–0.19 for stem volume. Genetic dominance effects were significant (p?<?0.05) in most cases, and the estimated dominance/additive genetic variance ratio was heterogeneous for height and DBH. Stand volume was measured for 93 of the same families and checks in 40-tree block plots on four sites. Heritability of stand volume was 0.25–0.76, with an across-sites estimate of 0.41. Dominance effects were statistically absent at two sites. Estimated region-wide additive genetic correlations between selection traits (in line plots) and stand volume (in block plots) ranged from 0.86 to 0.90. Estimated stand volume gain was 23 % of the mean for the best 12 % of families and 14 % of the mean for the best 24 % of families. Realised gain was under-estimated by predictions based on height, DBH, and sectional area, which had smaller coefficients of additive variation than did stem volume. It is concluded that although BLUP analysis of early-age height and DBH can provide for indirect selection on E. globulus stand volume, analysis of stem volume is required to predict genetic gain at an appropriate scale.
