In this study we examine the labial and occlusal surfaces of incisors and canines of hominins recovered from the Sima de los Huesos (SH), middle Pleistocene site, in order to establish the possible extra-masticatory use of anterior teeth. We have compared the microwear of these fossils with microwear from the anterior teeth of Australian Aborigines, a population characterized by ethnographic evidence of the use of their teeth as a third hand. These two samples of teeth were microscopically analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Our results support the “cultural” origin of microwear observed on fossil teeth: we conclude that the SH hominins used their anterior teeth as a “third hand” for para- or extra-masticatory activities.

Bdelloids show a rather uniform morphology of jaws (trophi), named ramate. The most recognizable feature is the presence of a series of teeth forming unci plates. The unci are not uniform in size; each plate has 1–10 major median teeth. Using SEM pictures of trophi and data from the literature, we analyzed the number of major unci teeth in relation to trophi size, total number of teeth, and environmental features. Variability in the number of major unci teeth in bdelloids is not related to trophi size or to total number of unci teeth, while total number of unci teeth and trophi size seem to be related to each other: larger trophi in general have more teeth than smaller trophi. Few major teeth are more common in species living in water bodies where they possibly eat unicellular algae, while more major teeth are more common in species living outside water bodies, among mosses and lichens, where they possibly eat bacteria.

Filaments of Micrasterias foliacea Bailey were isolated from a sample of a Texas lake. Cultures were established and examined by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Enzymatic removal of mucilage proved necessary to obtain well preserved cells for SEM investigation. The development of the overlapping polar lobes and the formation of the interlocking apical teeth are described. The importance of these, of mucilage and the primary wall for filament formation is discussed.

The radula is the ingesta-gathering structure in Mollusca. As interface, it has to perform various tasks without functional deterioration caused by wear. Wear prevention is well investigated in mollusks that forage on rocks and that generate high punctual pressure with their hard teeth, which contain high inorganic contents at their tips. In mollusks that forage on softer substrate, such as sand surfaces, and have relatively soft teeth, wear prevention has not been a focus of study before. Here, we studied the teeth of Limnotrochus thomsoni, which are used for raking algae from sand. For comparison, we investigated the soft outer teeth of Lavigeria grandis, which are used in gathering particles after the ingesta is loosed from the rock surface. SEM revealed scratches on all surfaces of the teeth and suggests that every tooth side interacts with abrasive particles during foraging. Analysis of stomach content revealed that sand particles of 10–20 μm diameter are ingested. By EDX/EDS, we studied the composition of the teeth and determined that high proportions of Ca are present on all surfaces, which could be an adaptation to reduce abrasion. Finally, we here present evidence for the existence of a canal within the teeth, which could potentially serve as delivery pathway of minerals during tooth maturation and has not been previously detected in Gastropoda.

Summary The surface anatomy and the structures lining the pharynx of Halicryptus spinulosus were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The structures were compared and contrasted with those reported for other priapulids, particularly those features previously studied with SEM. Buccal papillae and pharyngeal teeth of two types were described. Surface structures observed with SEM were: scalids, abdominal setae, anal papillae, posterior warts and ring papillae. The latter three structures are unique among described priapulids. The anal papillae are composed of several rounded, perhaps pedunculate, structures; the posterior warts are composed of mitriform structures in close association with columnar structures. Both are located in separate depressions in the posterior integument. The ring papillae occur on the annuli close to the posterior end. Halicryptus spinulosus was previously thought to lack these structures.

Abstract:  Echinoid teeth are without doubt the most complex and highly specialized skeletal component to have evolved in echinoderms. They are biomechanically constructed to be resilient and tough while maintaining a self-sharpening point. Based on SEM analysis of isolated tooth elements collected primarily from the Ordovician and Silurian of Gotland, we provide a detailed structural analysis of the earliest echinoderm teeth. Eight distinct constructional designs are recognized encompassing various degrees of sophistication, from a simple vertical battery of tooth spines to advanced teeth with multiple tooth plate series and a reinforced core of fibres. These provide key data from which we reconstruct the early stages of tooth evolution. The simplest teeth are composed of stacked rod-like elements with solid calcite tips. More advanced teeth underwent continuous replacement of tooth elements, as a simple self-sharpening mechanism. Within echinoids tooth design was refined by evolving thinner, flatter primary plates with buttressing, allowing maintenance of a sharper and stronger biting edge. Despite the obvious homology between the lanterns of ophiocistioids and echinoids, their teeth are very different in microstructural organization, and they have evolved different self-sharpening mechanisms. Whereas echinoid teeth evolved from a biseries of mouth spines, ophiocistioid goniodonts evolved from a single series of mouth spines. Rogeriserra represents the most primitive known battery of tooth elements but its taxonomic affinities remain unknown.

Scanning Electron Microscopical (SEM) as well as light microscopical features of the oral roof including barbels of the air-breathing teleost, Clarias batrachus (LINN.) have been described in relation to its feeding habit. 3 distinct types of taste buds have been recorded for the first time in the barbels, lip, and in and around the teeth bearing suprapharyngeal teeth pad of the fish studied. The taste buds in the barbels and lip are elevated over the epithelium and confer wart like appearance which probably help in mechanoreception in addition to chemoreception. The taste buds in the suprapharyngeal teeth pad slightly rise above the epithelium whereas those in the borders of it do not. They also possess numerous minute papillae in the gustatory pores. These taste buds seem to act as chemoreceptors. SEM and light microscopical observations on the structure and distribution of taste buds in the oral roof clearly reveal that the fish is purely a taste-feeder and scans and gropes the food materials from the bottom of the pond.

We have developed a relatively rapid glutaraldehyde-tannic acid (GTA) and osmium tetroxide (OsO4) fixation procedure which permits many types of uncoated biological specimens to be examined in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) at 20 kV without the occurrence of charging. Most specimens taken one day can be examined in the SEM the following afternoon. Types of specimens successfully treated were perfused adult and embryonic rat tissues, confluent human skin fibroblast tissue cultures, plant roots, flowers, seeds, some garden insects, and microcolonies of salivary streptococci. Cells in suspension and extracted human teeth did become electron conductive when treated with the GTA procedure. Most suspended cells must be centrifuged between each solution and the GTA procedure increases the preparation time for these cells. Extracted teeth are usually simply dried and coated. Therefore, the usual SEM preparation techniques are shorter and perhaps more useful for these types of specimens.

Four teeth were recovered from the Petralona cave site in Greece. These specimens were considered to be hominid remains and have become part of the dental data base for the Pleistocene hominids of Europe. SEM analysis of the anamel structure of these remains reveals an enamel prism pattern which is not hominid. A walled hexagonal prism was obtained which is representative of the carnivores.Subsequent analysis of a fragment of enamel from the Petralona hominid cranium revealed a keyhole enamel prism, typical of modern man, while analysis of a number of cave bear teeth revealed an identical walled hexagonal prism, as was found in the four isolated teeth. The conclusion is that the four isolated teeth are those of the Pleistocene cave bear which frequently populated the cave.

We assessed feeding and masticatory function in western tarsiers, Tarsius bancanus, from field study, from videotaped recordings of the feeding and chewing behavior of wild-caught animals in temporary captivity, from dissections of the muscles of mastication, and from scanning electron microscopic (SEM) examination of wear features of the teeth. Ingestion of large items of animal prey is made possible by the animal’s extremely wide gape. Anterior translation of the knob-like mandibular condyle in the anteroposteriorly elongated mandibular fossa makes possible a gape angle of 60–70‡. We observed two means of ingestion of grasshopper prey: ingestion by mastication, in which the postcanine teeth sever and reduce bites of the food as it is thrust into the mouth cavity, and repeated gape-shove sequences, during which the tarsier pushed grasshoppers of large diameter into the anterior part of its mouth and attempted to sever a bite with its anterior teeth. Morsels were successfully severed after three to five such sequences, and reduced quickly, with relatively few powerful, crushing chews. The insect cuticle was not evenly comminuted during mastication. We observed a marked side-to-side grinding component in the normal chewing cycle of T. bancanuson videotape and confirmed it by SEM. The main jaw adductors are bulky, long-fibered muscles that can accommodate wide grapes and still generate, at wide degrees of gape, the high occlusal pressures necessary to fracture thick chitinous exoskeletons of the scarabid beetles that form a substantial element of the western tarsier’s diet.

Ultrastructural studies of the mouthparts of Musca domestica L. show that the fly's prestomal teeth are more damaging to host tissues than considered previously. When fed on tissue culture or pig cornea, SEM revealed that M. domestica were able to tear and suck up cells. This process occurs so rapidly, and so few cells are involved, that the damage is not perceptible to the naked eye. Except for the prestomal teeth, the mouthparts have few other structures which can inflict the damage observed.

Subvertical grooves, located on the interproximal facets of most Neandertal posterior teeth, are less frequently noted on the teeth of other hominids, including modern humans. These grooves, 0.1–0.5 mm in width, are strictly localized within the facet area. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) examination of grooves present on Neandertal teeth from Caverna delle Fate (Liguria, Italy) and Genay (Côte d'Or, France) demonstrated that they were produced during the life of these individuals. Characteristics of the groove surface suggest an erosion-abrasion mechanism of formation. These grooves, which developed in parts of the dentition exposed to marked stress, originated in areas characterized by changes in the orientation of enamel prism bundles (i.e., Hunter-Schreger bands). Observations carried out on modern human molars showed a subvertical disposition of these bands near interproximal ridges facilitating subvertical microfractures. Possible correlations between enamel structure, masticatory stress, and interproximal groove formation in Neandertals are discussed.

Krejsa, R. J., Bringas, P. Jr. & Slavkin, H. C. 1990 10 15: A neontological interpretation of conodont elements based on agnathan cyclostome tooth structure, function, and development. Lethaia , Vol. 23, pp. 359–378. Oslo. ISSN 0024–1164.
Speculation about a conodont-cyclostome connection has led us to search for and establish a biological basis for various characteristic structures in conodont elements. Measurements of juvenile hagfish palatal and lingual teeth overlap those of representative conodont elements, demonstrating a size correspondence of conodonts with teeth of living vertebrates. When hagfish tooth histology is compared with internal and surface topography (SEM) of hagfish, keratinous teeth and mineralized conodont elements, microspaces and tubules similar to those found in hagfish functional tooth coverings and replacement elements are also found within the white matter' of conodont elements. It is provisionally suggested that the primary organic matrix of conodont elements could be keratin and/or keratin-related molecules, and that individual conodont elements could represent shed tooth coverings. The basal bodies' found in certain conodont elements could be replacement elements. These interpretations are contrary to several paradigms of orthodox conodontology. ▭ Agnatha, conodonts, cyclostomes, hagfish, keratin, paleo-biology, shedding, teeth .

Potentiometric stripping analysis (PSA) with oxygen as the oxidant has been used to determine soluble zinc and copper levels in exfoliated human teeth (all of which required extraction for orthodontic reasons) and commercial dental materials. The soluble zinc and copper contents of teeth were slightly below the zinc and copper contents in whole teeth reported by other researchers, except in the case of tooth with removed amalgam filling. Soluble zinc and copper concentrations of the dental materials and metal ceramic crowns were 0.50-6.30, and of 2.00-4.30 microg/g, respectively. The results of this work suggest that PSA may be a good method for zinc and copper leaching studies during the investigation of dental prosthetic materials' biocompatibility. Corrosive action of acidic media as evidenced by SEM micrographs caused the leaching of metal ions from teeth.

Atlantic Cutlassfish, Trichiurus lepturus, have large, barbed, premaxillary and dentary fangs, and sharp dagger-shaped teeth in their oral jaws. Functional teeth firmly ankylose to the dentigerous bones. We used dry skeletons, histology, SEM, and micro-CT scanning to study 92 specimens of T. lepturus from the western North Atlantic to describe its dentition and tooth replacement. We identified three modes of intraosseous tooth replacement in T. lepturus depending on the location of the tooth in the jaw. Mode 1 relates to replacement of premaxillary fangs, in which new tooth germs enter the lingual surface of the premaxilla, develop horizontally, and rotate into position. We suggest that growth of large fangs in the premaxilla is accommodated by this horizontal development. Mode 2 occurs for dentary fangs: new tooth germs enter the labial surface of the dentary, develop vertically, and erupt into position. Mode 3 describes replacement of lateral teeth, in which new tooth germs enter a trench along the crest of the dentigerous bone, develop vertically, and erupt into position. Such distinct modes of tooth replacement in a teleostean species are unknown. We compared modes of replacement in T. lepturus to 20 species of scombroids to explore the phylogenetic distribution of these three replacement modes. Alternate tooth replacement (in which new teeth erupt between two functional teeth), ankylosis, and intraosseous tooth development are plesiomorphic to Bluefish + other Scombroidei. Our study highlights the complexity and variability of intraosseous tooth replacement. Within tooth replacement systems, key variables include sites of formation of tooth germs, points of entry of tooth germs into dentigerous bones, coupling of tooth germ migration and bone erosion, whether teeth develop horizontally or immediately beneath the tooth to be replaced, and how tooth eruption and ankylosis occur. Developmentally different tooth replacement processes can yield remarkably similar dentitions.
