Conspecifics during development provide the most reliable sensory cues for species recognition in parental bird species. The Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata) is a sexually dimorphic model species used for investigations of the behavioural cues and neurobiological substrates of species recognition. Regarding acoustic conspecific cues, theory predicts that exposure to both con- and heterospecific vocalisations and other environmental sounds results in more accurate auditory species discrimination, because diverse vocal cues during development shift optimal conspecific acceptance thresholds to be more restrictive to yield fewer acceptance errors. We tested the behavioural preferences of female and male Zebra Finches raised in an outdoor environment (Control) and female and male Zebra Finches reared in an indoor colony with exposure to Zebra Finches only (Restricted), to playbacks of songs of Zebra Finches, Zebra Finches cross-fostered by Bengalese Finches (Lonchura striata var. domestica), and Bengalese Finches. Several behavioural measures revealed minimal sexual dimorphism in discrimination but showed that Control subjects preferred conspecifics’ songs over either the songs of cross-fostered Zebra Finches or Bengalese Finches. Restricted Zebra Finches in contrast did not discriminate behaviourally between the three song types. These results support the concept of a shift in the species acceptance threshold in the restricted treatment resulting in more acceptance errors. We discuss future work to test the role of exposure to diverse vocal cues of both con- and heterospecifics in the ontogeny of song perception in this important laboratory model species for social recognition research.  相似文献

Here we report the first discovery of two viable triploid male Zebra Finches Taeniopygia guttata. We compared the morphology of their sperm with that of normal diploid Zebra Finches and examined eggs resulting from a triploid male and diploid female pairing to investigate whether triploid Zebra Finches can reproduce. The majority (78%) of the triploids' spermatozoa had malformed sperm heads, which were 60% larger, and all examined eggs (= 42) were infertile. Our results tentatively suggest that triploid ZZZ Zebra Finches cannot reproduce, and thus represent a rare evolutionary dead‐end.  相似文献

Moult of the remiges was studied over eight years in a population of Zebra Finches from southeast Australia. In first-year birds the first primary was lost at mean age of 80 days in both sexes; moult took 204 days to complete in males and 223 in females. Birds hatched in autumn postponed the start of their primary moult until spring. Primaries were replaced slowly in a rigid, non-overlapping, ascending order from #1 to #9 but the secondaries did not display a rigid sequence.
Adult Zebra Finches moulted remiges throughout the year. Primary moult was initiated in any month. Primary moult had a mean duration of 229 days for males and 240 days for females. Primaries moulted in continuous waves: the interval between successive moults in males was –16 days and +6 days in females. Limited food, low temperatures and breeding slowed, but did not stop, wing-moult. Birds caring for eggs and young actively replaced remiges.
The pattern of wing-moult displayed here by Zebra Finches is exceptional for passerines and may be related to the opportunistic breeding strategy necessary in an arid, unpredictable environment. Its presence in the Victorian birds may be non-adaptive.  相似文献

Bar-tailed godwits migrate from West African wintering sites to breeding areas in northern Russia with only one stopover. We compared hematocrit (Hct), blood hemoglobin concentration (Hb), and mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHb; a measure of the relative proportion of Hb in the cellular blood fraction) between arriving godwits lured to land 60 km short of the stopover site and godwits during subsequent refueling. The Hct and Hb of arriving godwits was low when compared to that of refueling birds. On the stopover site, Hct and Hb correlated positively with size-corrected body mass. In addition, Hb and MCHb reached peak levels in the last days of stopover. We explored the possibility of regenerative anemia in arriving godwits by comparing the fraction of reticulocytes (young red blood cells) between arriving and refueling birds. No differences were found. Therefore, we suggest that the increase in Hct, Hb, and MCHb during refueling is not in response to a severe anemic state at arrival. Rather, we suggest that the increase in blood parameters may anticipate the increased aerobic requirements of impending migratory flight and possibly satisfy heightened oxygen demands of the larger body mass of fattened birds. The Hct increase on the stopover site may also serve to buffer the red blood cell population against possible red blood cell breakdown during long-distance flight.  相似文献

Newly hatched white leghorn chicks (Gallus domesticus) subjected to single whole body 2.25 Gy (225 rads) gamma radiation exposure at the dose rate of 0.50 Gy/sec (50 rads/sec), were studied for changes in a number of haematological parameters at days 1,3,5,7,14 and 28 post irradiation during development. The sudden decline and gradual recovery in total RBC and WBC counts and the level of Hb and Hct along with MCV, MCH and MCHC values evaluation indicates a high regenerative capability of leghorn chicks.  相似文献

Disturbance during development may have lasting effects on the growth rates and stress physiology of birds. Although repeated handling by researchers is often necessary, the possible effects of such handling on the development of semi‐altricial young are unclear. We examined the effect of daily handling on growth rates and plasma corticosterone levels of Leach's Storm‐Petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa) chicks on Kent Island in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, Canada, during the 2011 nesting season. From post‐hatch day 7 to post‐hatch days 14–36, birds in the experimental group were extracted from burrows and measured (wing, tarsus, and mass) for ~3 min every day, whereas birds in the control group were left undisturbed. After the treatment period, blood was collected from birds in both groups within 3 min of initially reaching into burrows (baseline) and after a 30‐min restraint stress test to assess the effect of early life disturbance on programming of the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal (HPA) axis. A second acute restraint stress test was conducted three weeks after the end of the treatment period to investigate possible longer term effects of early life disturbance. Growth rates of wings and tarsi were similar for handled chicks (N = 18) and non‐handled control chicks (N = 21), as were baseline and 30‐min acute restraint stress‐induced corticosterone levels. As also reported in previous studies of other altricial and semi‐altricial species, older chicks (42–64 d old) had higher plasma corticosterone levels than younger chicks (21–43 d old) after acute restraint stress tests, reflecting delayed development of the HPA axis. The age‐related increase in HPA axis sensitivity observed prior to fledging could facilitate foraging and predator avoidance behaviors while minimizing exposure to high levels of corticosterone earlier in development. Overall, we found no evidence that repeated disturbance influenced either growth rates or HPA axis programming of Leach's Storm‐Petrel chicks.  相似文献

Zebra Finches are the epitome of desert-adapted avian species; i.e. they are able to survive without drinking water for over a year. Whereas transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in naked Zebra Finch nestlings is lower than in adults, and desert adaptation is accompanied by intercellular deposition of epidermal multigranular body (MGB) contents, MGB secretion is reduced as nestlings mature into feathered adults, indicative of less stringent barrier requirements. Here, removal of drinking water resulted in increased intercellular deposition of MGB contents, and TEWL progressively decreased. In contrast, MGB intercellular deposition decreased when birds were rehydrated, with TEWL returning towards normal within 5 days of rehydration. Finally, water-deprivation caused significant changes in epidermal lipid composition that returned toward control levels with rehydration. These studies show that adult Zebra Finches adapt to xeric stress by increased secretion of multigranular bodies resulting in reduced TEWL.  相似文献

Effects of neonatal nutrition on adult reproduction in a passerine bird   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Effects of neonatal nutrition on adult reproductive performance have been little studied. In Zebra Finches Taeniopygia guttata , poor neonatal nutrition is known to be associated with reduced blood antioxidant levels in adulthood, which could impair reproductive performance. Here, we compare the effects of standard-quality (SQ) or lower-quality (LQ) neonatal nutrition on components of fecundity. Compared with controls, LQ birds took longer to initiate egg-laying, and then laid eggs at a slower rate. LQ birds did not, however, show reduced clutch mass or size, or yolk antioxidant levels (retinol; α- or γ-tocopherol; carotenoids). Zebra Finches breed opportunistically, often only once in their short lifetime. Therefore, the timing but also the number and quality of eggs are critical fitness-related traits. Our results indicate that LQ birds had impaired reproductive capacity, suggesting resource accumulation constraints. Maximizing egg number and quality appears to have been more important than rapid egg production.  相似文献

On Floreana, the smallest inhabited island in the Galápagos, populations of several species of birds have either been extirpated or, based on anecdotal evidence and small‐scale surveys, are declining. Our objective, therefore, was to conduct a comprehensive survey of landbirds encompassing the entire island during three breeding seasons (2014–2016). We conducted surveys at 59 points in 2014, 257 in 2015, and 295 in 2016. Each survey point was sampled once. We detected 12 species during our surveys. Galápagos Flycatchers, Yellow Warblers, Small and Medium ground‐finches, and Small Tree‐Finches were widely distributed over the entire island. Common Cactus‐Finches and Medium Tree‐Finches had more restricted distributions in the lower or higher parts of the island. Few Dark‐billed Cuckoos (Coccyzus melacoryphus), Paint‐billed Crakes (Neocrex erythrops), Galápagos Doves (Zenaida galapagoensis), and Galápagos Short‐eared Owls (Asio flammeus galapagoensis) were recorded. Small Ground‐Finches and Small Tree‐Finches were found at densities comparable to those on other Galápagos Islands, whereas densities of Galápagos Flycatchers and Yellow Warblers were higher on Floreana than on other islands. Endemic Medium Tree‐Finches were confined to an area of 24 km², mainly in the highlands, but were still widespread and common in their restricted habitat, with the number of territories estimated to be between 3900 and 4700. Of 22 originally occurring landbirds on Floreana, no fewer than 10 species have either been extirpated or are likely to have been extirpated since the arrival of the first human inhabitants. The combined effects of introduced mammals, large‐scale habitat destruction, and direct human persecution were responsible for the extirpation of six species during the 19th century. Three additional species have been extirpated since 1960, likely due to the introduction of the parasitic fly Philornis downsi, and this fly remains a major threat for the remaining bird species. Developing strategies for reducing the impact of these flies on the birds of the Galapagos Islands must be a high priority. In addition, habitat management and restoration, including the control of invasive plants and promotion of native tree species, will be critically important in conserving landbird populations on Floreana.  相似文献

The determination of hormone titers in small plasma volumes by radioimmunoassay makes it possible to demonstrate the mutual relationship between testosterone titers and sexual behaviour. Testosterone titers were measured after courtship tests in male Zebra Finches to determine whether these levels are influenced by sexual behaviour. The results show that immediately after a courtship test there is a significant difference in hormone levels between sexually experienced and inexperienced birds. Sexual experience can also be shown to influence baseline testosterone titers in male Zebra Finches: experienced ♂♂ have a high baseline level while inexperienced ♂♂ have a low baseline level. In two other behaviour patterns, undirected song and courtship song, it could be demonstrated, that the amount of these behaviours shown is linearly correlated with the amount of testosterone in the blood plasma. Both song types have different hormonal threshold values. The comparison of testosterone titers between different treatment groups can only be made if the groups are maintained under identical conditions, since housing conditions appear to have a very marked influence on testosterone titers. The mechanism of action of testosterone in sexual behaviour is discussed.  相似文献

The Zebra Finch Taeniopygia guttata is a model bird species for the experimental study of behavioural and evolutionary concepts in captivity and especially sexual selection. The validity of sexual selection studies of domesticated birds is of long‐standing concern as little is known about the influence of domestication on sexually selected traits. Most domesticated Zebra Finch populations are maintained under a strict breeding regime to avoid potential inbreeding. However, these breeding regimes may interfere with the processes of sexual selection and influence the evolution of sexually selected traits because they may limit or prohibit active mate choice. Here, we investigated the potential impact of a monogamous breeding scheme in a domesticated population in which active mate choice is largely inhibited, on the evolution of sperm morphometry as a sexually selected trait. We compared sperm morphometric traits (total sperm length and length of sperm head, midpiece and flagellum), and the variance thereof, between a domesticated and two wild Zebra Finch populations. Although we found significant differences between the three populations for certain sperm traits (head length, midpiece length), which may be of importance in postcopulatory sexual selection, overall, variance in sperm morphometry did not differ between the domesticated and the wild Zebra Finch populations. Our results validate the use of domesticated Zebra Finches for further studies of postcopulatory sexual selection and sperm competition.  相似文献

Parental food allocation in birds has long been a focal point for life history and parent–offspring conflict theories. In asynchronously hatching species, parents are thought to either adjust brood size through death of marginal offspring (brood reduction), or feed the disadvantaged chicks to reduce the competitive hierarchy (parental compensation). Here, we show that parent American coots (Fulica americana) practice both strategies by switching from brood reduction to compensation across time. Late‐hatching chicks suffer higher mortality only for the first few days after hatching. Later, parents begin to exhibit parental aggression towards older chicks and each parent favours a single chick, both of which are typically the youngest of the surviving offspring. The late‐hatched survivors can equal or exceed their older siblings in size prior to independence. A mixed allocation strategy allows parents to compensate for the costs of competitive hierarchies while gaining the benefits of hatching asynchrony.  相似文献

Parental care should be selected to respond to honest cues that increase offspring survival. When offspring are parasitised, the parental food compensation hypothesis predicts that parents can provision extra food to compensate for energy loss due to parasitism. Chick begging behaviour is a possible mechanism to solicit increased feeding from attending parents. We experimentally manipulated parasite intensity from Philornis downsi in nests of Darwin's small ground finch (Geospiza fuliginosa) to test its effects on chick begging intensity and parental food provisioning. We used in‐nest video recordings of individually marked chicks to quantify nocturnal parasite feeding on chicks, subsequent diurnal chick begging intensity and parental feeding care. Our video analysis showed that one chick per brood had the highest parasite intensity during the night (supporting the tasty chick hypothesis) and weakest begging intensity during the day, which correlated with low parental care and rapid death. We observed sequential chick death on different days rather than total brood loss on a given day. Our within‐nest video images showed that (1) high nocturnal larval feeding correlated with low diurnal begging intensity and (2) parent birds ignored weakly begging chicks and provisioned strongly begging chicks. Excluding predation, all parasite‐free chicks survived (100% survival) and all parasitised chicks died in the nest (100% mortality). Weak begging intensity in parasitised chicks, which honestly signalled recent parasite attack, was not used as a cue for parental provisioning. Parents consistently responded to the strongest chick in both parasitised and parasite‐free nests.  相似文献

Abstract Bird feeding on residential property is a popular activity throughout Western countries. Advocates insist the practice is beneficial, while opponents maintain that it can result in a wide range of negative outcomes including malnutrition. The biological effects of ‘backyard feeding’ were studied in Australian magpies Gymnorhina tibicen during the non‐breeding season in 1999 in the Greater Brisbane and the Lockyer Valley regions, south‐east Queensland, Australia. Six magpie populations were selected and 70 birds were individually tagged for identification. The birds were provided with processed foods, 20–40 g per bird daily. To monitor the effects of the food, blood chemistry and body mass (BM) were used as indices. Significant effects were observed in BM and plasma cholesterol (PC), showing strong sensitivity to food provisioning. Significant effects on PC and uric acid were found only when birds were fed dog sausage. Results suggest that blood PC levels in magpies are readily influenced by, probably, the lipids present in food, and that the type of food can affect blood PC levels. These effects may occur widely among fed magpies if the influence that we demonstrated at plasma level can be generalized. Following the free‐ranging study, six magpies were captured and subjected to a 6‐day captive experiment to determine whether the selected foods had the potential to alter the birds’ blood chemistry. It was found that all of the foods, when provided ad libitum, influence at least two of the three blood parameters (PC and non‐esterified fatty acids). Due to its popularity, wildlife feeding will continue. To make wildlife‐feeding activities truly sustainable, there is a need for further studies. This study clearly demonstrated that the physiology of wild magpies can be affected by ‘backyard feeding’.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of storage time at +4 °C on red blood cell count (RBC), haematocrit (Hct), haemoglobin (Hb), white blood cell count (WBC), thrombocyte count (TC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) in mullet (Mugil cephalus) using an automatic method. After blood collection (T0), all samples were analyzed using both the manual and automatic method. To test the validation of the automatic method, a paired t‐test was applied, and no statistical difference was observed. The samples were successively divided into four different aliquots and stored at +4 °C to assess the haematological parameters using the automatic method. The first aliquot was refrigerated for 6 h, the second one for 24 h, the third one for 48 h and the last one at for 72 h. One‐way repeated‐measures ANOVA showed a significant effect of storage time (P < 0.05) on Hb, WBC, TC, MCH and MCHC. These results suggest that haematological parameters can be assessed within 6 h from blood collection when samples are stored at +4 °C because long‐term storage modifies the results of the analyses. Further studies on these parameters could be still needed in various fish species to validate an appropriate method for haematological analysis useful not only for the evaluation of the health status of animal living in captivity and in aquaculture but also to have reliability environmental haematological biomarkers. Abstract Australian grass-finches are widely reported to consume large quantities of green seed when it becomes available, and the opportunistic breeding of wild Zebra Finches in the arid zone has been correlated with the occurrence of rain. In this study, green and ripe seeds were harvested from seven pasture and weed grasses grown in experimental plots and, along with three cereal flours and whole-egg powder, were analysed for the amino-acid composition of their protein. The relative levels of ten amino acids essential in the diets of growing birds were compared between samples using a cluster analysis dendrogram generated from Raabe's Similarity Index. The protein of all green seeds clustered with whole egg, and away from all but one of the ripe seeds and seed products. Green and ripe seed profiles were found to be significantly different by a two-sample multivariate test of significance (Hotelling's T2). Histidine, lysine, phenylalanine and threonine were the amino acids most different. Of these four amino acids, lysine and threonine (along with methionine) were potentially limiting in ripe seeds when compared with whole-egg protein. In green seeds, lysine was only marginally limiting, threonine was no longer limiting, but methionine was still limiting when compared with whole-egg protein. These results indicate that the benefit of green vs ripe seed in the diet of breeding Zebra Finches is partly a higher level of the limiting essential amino acid, lysine, and partly a higher intake and throughput of soft green seed and consequent greater extraction of limiting essential amino acids.  相似文献

Parasite transmission strategies strongly impact host–parasite co‐evolution and virulence. However, studies of vector‐borne parasites such as avian malaria have neglected the potential effects of host relatedness on the exchange of parasites. To test whether extended parental care in the presence of vectors increases the probability of transmission from parents to offspring, we used high‐throughput sequencing to develop microsatellites for malaria‐like Leucocytozoon parasites of a wild raptor population. We show that host siblings carry genetically more similar parasites than unrelated chicks both within and across years. Moreover, chicks of mothers of the same plumage morph carried more similar parasites than nestlings whose mothers were of different morphs, consistent with matrilineal transmission of morph‐specific parasite strains. Ours is the first evidence of an association between host relatedness and parasite genetic similarity, consistent with vector‐mediated parent‐to‐offspring transmission. The conditions for such ‘quasi‐vertical’ transmission may be common and could suppress the evolution of pathogen virulence.  相似文献

In species with biparental care, individuals adjust their workload to that of their partner to either compensate or match its investment. Communication within a pair might be crucial for achieving this adjustment. Zebra finches, Taeniopygia guttata, form life‐long monogamous pair bonds, in which partners are highly coordinated and both incubate the eggs. When relieving each other during incubation, partners perform a structured call duet at the nest. If this duet functions to coordinate incubation workload, disrupting the pair's usual nest‐relief pattern by delaying the male's return to the nest should affect the structure of the duet. Using domesticated birds breeding in a large aviary, we found that delaying the male's return induced shorter duets with higher call rates. In addition, we tracked the location of individuals with a transponder at the nest and the feeder, and showed that these accelerated duets were associated with an increased haste of the partners to take turns incubating and foraging. Females also spent less time incubating during their subsequent shift, and females' time off‐nest was best predicted by their mate's calling behaviour in the previous duet. Taken together, these results suggest that duets may function as ‘vocal negotiation’ over parental care.  相似文献

Hatching failure is widespread in birds, and is usually the result of embryo death rather than infertility. Embryo death can result from both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, some of which may vary across the developmental period. Determining the point at which an embryo died during development may therefore help us to understand the underlying cause of death. Here we describe simple criteria that can be used by field ornithologists to establish the developmental stage of dead embryos found in unhatched passerine eggs, and explain how this can be used to estimate the date of embryo death. We compared the pattern of embryo development over the incubation period for three species, the Zebra Finch Taeniopygia guttata, Blue Tit Cyanistes caeruleus and Great Tit Parus major. We also compared rates of Zebra Finch embryo development under artificial and standard (parental) incubation. Embryo development rates were remarkably similar across the three species and between Zebra Finch embryos under artificial and natural incubation conditions. We therefore suggest that the pattern of embryo development in the Zebra Finch may provide a model for other small passerines with similar incubation periods, but acknowledge that further interspecific comparisons are required before this model is considered more widely applicable. By estimating embryo death dates using our approach, ornithologists will be able to determine temporal patterns of embryo mortality in relation to extrinsic environmental conditions. This approach may shed light on how extrinsic factors such as climate and parental behaviour influence embryo survival in wild birds.  相似文献
