Many laboratories are conducting research using songbirds as their animal model. In particular, songbirds are widely used for studying the behavioural and neural mechanisms underlying vocal learning. Many researchers use wild-caught birds to conduct this research, although few studies of behaviour have been conducted to determine the effects of captive housing on these species. We investigated the vocal production pattern of wild-caught black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) over an entire season in laboratory housing. We documented the frequency of production of four vocalizations (fee-bee song, chick-a-dee calls, dee calls, and gargle calls) across seasons and diurnal pattern and compared the observed pattern of laboratory vocalizations to those previously observed and reported in the wild. Laboratory-housed chickadees had seasonal and diurnal vocal production shifts that were related to both photoperiodic changes (season) and diurnal pattern. For instance, there was significantly more fee-bee song in the spring than summer, autumn, and winter with the most fee-bee song occurring at spring dawn as seen in the wild. Our results also confirmed that the general pattern of vocalizations was consistent between wild and laboratory populations, with no significant differences for either the seasonal or diurnal pattern of fee-bee song production between populations. Differences between settings were observed in the pattern of chick-a-dee calls at dawn and sunset between field and laboratory populations. However, differences in the quantity of vocalization types between laboratory and wild populations suggest that housing conditions are influencing the normal vocal behavioural patterns.  相似文献

The social behaviour of the nocturnal prosimian Loris tardigradus lydekkerianus in its natural habitat was studied for 21 months in a scrub jungle in Dindigul, southern India. A total of 22834 scans were collected during 2656 hours of observation on identified and unidentified lorises. Social interactions were observed between individuals of all age-sex classes, both during the night and at dawn, when the animals met to sleep together. The majority of aggressive encounters between individuals occurred in territorial and mating contexts. Individuals also communicated with each other through chemical and vocal signals. Adults and sub-adults of both sexes were observed to immigrate into the study area, leading to social interactions with resident individuals.

The winter flounder is an in‐shore flatfish living in shallow waters on the east coast of North America from Labrador to Georgia. In the St Lawrence estuary, the reproductive season is May and June. Our objective was to test the effects of winter‐spring photoperiod and temperature conditions on the timing of sexual maturation in both males and females. Groups (16 animals each) of winter flounder breeders were maintained from mid‐January to mid‐May under five different experimental conditions: (1) natural photoperiod and temperature conditions; (2) natural photoperiod, 6° C; (3) 15L : 9D, natural temperature conditions; (4) 15L : 9D, 6° C; (5) accelerated photoperiod increase from winter to spring conditions, 6° C. Natural photoperiod and temperature conditions correspond to a gradual increase in light period from 8L : 16D (January) to 15L : 9D (May) and in temperature from −1° C (January to April) to 6° C (May). GSI and condition factor did not differ among the treatments ( P  > 0·05). In males, milt production occurred simultaneously in the different treatments and histological examination did not indicate any significant effect of either photoperiod or temperature on testes development. In females, seven stages of oocyte development were observed. Both the number of oocytes at the cortical alveoli stage and number of atretic oocytes increased at 6° C (warm temperature conditions). Overall, neither photoperiod nor temperature modified the reproductive period. Warm winter‐spring temperature conditions, however, may decrease egg numbers and egg quality.  相似文献

Artificial night lighting is expanding globally, but its ecological consequences remain little understood. Animals often use changes in day length as a cue to time seasonal behaviour. Artificial night lighting may influence the perception of day length, and may thus affect both circadian and circannual rhythms. Over a 3.5 month period, from winter to breeding, we recorded daily singing activity of six common songbird species in 12 woodland sites, half of which were affected by street lighting. We previously reported on analyses suggesting that artificial night lighting affects the daily timing of singing in five species. The main aim of this study was to investigate whether the presence of artificial night lighting is also associated with the seasonal occurrence of dawn and dusk singing. We found that in four species dawn and dusk singing developed earlier in the year at sites exposed to light pollution. We also examined the effects of weather conditions and found that rain and low temperatures negatively affected the occurrence of dawn and dusk singing. Our results support the hypothesis that artificial night lighting alters natural seasonal rhythms, independently of other effects of urbanization. The fitness consequences of the observed changes in seasonal timing of behaviour remain unknown.  相似文献

Demand-feeding behaviour was studied in Oncorhynchus mykiss held at 7–10°C in groups of 30 individuals, under a 16:8, 12:12 or 8 : 16 light : dark regime, using self-feeders connected to a computer. The daily food demand was variable between tanks from 1.5 to 5% of the body weight, the specific growth rate ranged between 1.4 and 2.6% of body weight increase per day, and the feed: gain ratio ranged between 0.84 and 3.17, regardless of the photoperiod length. More than 98% of the feeding demand occurred during the photophase, regardless of the photoperiod, with a main peak at dawn and an occasional peak at dusk.  相似文献

Abstract

Previously, the authors have reported seasonal variations in cell mediated immunity in the dog during the period July, 1977 ‐ October 1978 as measured by whole blood lectin‐induced lymphocyte transformation. Peak activity occurred in the summer, suggesting association with photoperiodicity. Here the authors report on immune response of dogs kept indoors ‐ under controlled physical environment ‐ with a natural (outdoor) photoperiod or under a 12:12 h (LD) regime, and a control group kept in outdoor kennels. Peak immune activity in 1979 occurred in the winter, in both indoor groups as well as the outdoor groups subject to natural photoperiod. Since the indoor dogs were kept at a constant temperature and humidity in clean (filtered) air, photoperiod, temperature, and particulate air contaminants probably are not associated with seasonal variations in immunity. The underlying cause for either the seasonal variations or the shift from peak activity in the summer of 1978 to winter of 1979 is unknown. Dogs under LD = 12:12 light regime had a significantly lowered immunity relative to the dogs with the natural photoperiod.  相似文献

Conversational turn-taking is an integral part of language development, as it reflects a confluence of social factors that mitigate communication. Humans coordinate the timing of speech based on the behaviour of another speaker, a behaviour that is learned during infancy. While adults in several primate species engage in vocal turn-taking, the degree to which similar learning processes underlie its development in these non-human species or are unique to language is not clear. We recorded the natural vocal interactions of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) occurring with both their sibling twins and parents over the first year of life and observed at least two parallels with language development. First, marmoset turn-taking is a learned vocal behaviour. Second, marmoset parents potentially played a direct role in guiding the development of turn-taking by providing feedback to their offspring when errors occurred during vocal interactions similarly to what has been observed in humans. Though species-differences are also evident, these findings suggest that similar learning mechanisms may be implemented in the ontogeny of vocal turn-taking across our Order, a finding that has important implications for our understanding of language evolution.  相似文献

Lemna gibba G3 (M-1% sucrose medium, 26°C) showed a bimodalfloral response to a 2-hr light pulse scanning 21-, 18-, 15-and 12-hr nyctoperiods. With the simplified min-LD method, thelight pulse given early or late in these nyctoperiods was foundto signal false dusk or false dawn after two transient cycles. The magnitude of floral response to the light pulse dependedon the length of the asymmetric skeleton photoperiod comprisingeither the preceding main photoperiod and the false dusk orthe false dawn and the subsequent main photoperiod. No flowerwas induced by asymmetric skeleton photoperiods shorter thanthe critical daylength, 12 hr. In duckweed previously entrainedto an interrupted 15-hr nyctoperiod, false dawn or false duskwas physiologically equivalent to the light-requiring L1- orL2-phase of the critical photoperiod. Another light-requiringphase occurred 12 hr after or before the false dawn or falsedusk. These and relevant findings suggest that the timing ofthe L1- and L2-phases is under the control of the endogenouscircadian oscillator and that the skeleton as well as completephotoperiods are inductive only when both the L1- and L2-phases,whether they are shifted or not due to night interruption, areilluminated. The seasonal reproductive cycle of photoperiodic rodents is conceptualized as a series of discrete melatonin-dependent neuroendocrine transitions. Least understood is the springtime restoration of responsiveness to winter-like melatonin signals (breaking of refractoriness) that enables animals to once again respond appropriately to winter photoperiods the following year. This has been posited to require many weeks of long days based on studies employing static photoperiods instead of the annual pattern of continually changing photoperiods under which these mechanisms evolved. Maintaining Siberian hamsters under simulated natural photoperiods, we demonstrate that winter refractoriness is broken within six weeks after the spring equinox. We then test whether a history of natural photoperiod exposure can eliminate the requirement for long-day melatonin signalling. Hamsters pinealectomized at the spring equinox and challenged 10 weeks later with winter melatonin infusions exhibited gonadal regression, indicating that refractoriness was broken. A photostimulatory effect on body weight is first observed in the last four weeks of winter. Thus, the seasonal transition to the summer photosensitive phenotype is triggered prior to the equinox without exposure to long days and is thereafter melatonin-independent. Distinctions between photoperiodic and circannual seasonal organization erode with the incorporation in the laboratory of ecologically relevant day length conditions.  相似文献

Annual variations in concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone in plasma were analysed in relation to the antler cycle in six adult male roe deer exposed to a natural photoperiod (latitude 46 degrees 10'N) and in four adult males maintained in a constant short-day photoperiod (8 h light: 16 h dark) for a year, from the winter solstice at which time both groups of animals had antlers in velvet. The animals were sampled, every 15 min for 2 or 4 h at intervals of one month for a year. Under both natural and experimental conditions, LH concentrations were high from January to March, but in the experimental conditions they decreased between April and May-June, whereas in the natural conditions they increased. Plasma LH concentration was lowest between July and November in animals under natural photoperiod, whereas under 8 h light:16 h dark photoperiod a second increase in plasma LH occurred between August and September. Between March and August, concentrations of plasma testosterone increased under natural photoperiod, whereas under experimental photoperiod there was a biphasic pattern of plasma testosterone with peaks between February and May and between September and November. Under natural photoperiod, antlers were cast in November, 369 +/- 6 days after the previous antlers were cast. Under experimental photoperiod, antlers were cast after 193 +/- 10 days, and a new set developed. The sexual cycle of the male appears to be initiated by an endogenous rhythm in winter and is then maintained by hormonal changes resulting from increasing photoperiod in spring.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Rectal temperature of 10 female adult horses was recorded every 2 h for 10 consecutive days under a natural winter photoperiod (9 h of light and 15 h of darkness per day). A robust daily rhythm of body temperature was observed in all animals. The rhythm had a mean level of 38.3°C and a range of excursion of 1.0°C. Temperature started its daily ascent at dawn each day and reached a maximum 14 hours later. Body temperature of 5 of the horses was studied for 10 more days under constant illumination. The rhythm persisted under this condition, although with a slightly longer period of 24.2 h, which confirms the endogenous nature of the rhythm. Despite the fact that the body size of the horse is several orders of magnitude greater than that of rodents, the various parameters of the body temperature rhythm of the horse are similar to those of several species of rodents previously studied.  相似文献

1. Cyclic daily fattening routines are very common in wintering small wild birds, and are thought to be the consequence of a trade-off between different environmental and state-dependent factors. According to theory, these trajectories should range from accelerated (i.e. mass increases exponentially towards dusk) when mass-dependent predation costs are the most important cause of mortality risk, to decelerated (i.e. the rate of mass gain is highest at dawn and decreases afterward) when starvation is the greater risk. 2. We examine if geographically separate populations of coal tits, wintering in Scotland and central Spain under contrasting photoperiods, show differences in their strategies of daily mass regulation. We describe population differences in wild birds under natural conditions, and experimentally search for interpopulation variation in diurnal body mass increase under common, manipulated, photoperiod conditions (LD 9 : 15 h vs. 7 : 17 h), controlling for temperature, food availability, predator pressure and foraging arena. 3. Winter diurnal mass gain of wild coal tits was more delayed towards the latter part of the daylight period in central Spain (i.e. the locality with longer winter days) than in Scotland. In both localities, the pattern was linked to the average mass at dawn, with mass increasing more rapidly in lighter birds. However, under the controlled photoperiod situation the pattern of daily mass gain was similar in both populations. Diurnal body mass gain was more accelerated at the end of the day, and the increase in body mass in the first hour of the day was considerably lower under the long (9 h) than under the short (7 h) photoperiod in both populations. 4. Wintering coal tits show patterns of mass gain through the day that are compatible with current theories of the costs and benefits of fat storage, with birds at lower latitudes (with longer winter days) having a greater tendency to delay mass gain until late in the day. The experimental study revealed that these patterns are plastic, with birds responding directly to the photoperiod that they experience, suggesting that they are continually making fine-scale adjustments to energy reserves on the basis of both inherent (e.g. state-dependent) and extrinsic cues.  相似文献

Abstract. The development of frost hardiness in Pinus radiata was investigated to establish whether there is quantitative relationship between photoperiod and the hardening process. Three controlled environment experiments were carried out. In the first, seedlings were exposed to a photoperiod that shortened from 13 h at a rate of 3 min d?1 to 9.5 h. At intervals, the photoperiod was either held constant or lengthened. In the second experiment, seedlings were exposed to one of five constant photoperiods between 9 and 12 h for up to 90 d. In the third, seedlings were exposed to photoperiods shortening at rates of 1 or 5 min d?1. Frost hardiness was also measured during the natural photoperiod-controlled stage of hardening in outdoor-grown seedlings. Frost hardiness developed at a constant rate in response to a shortening photoperiod once it had declined to about 12 h. This rate was consistent with the hardening rate that occurred in outdoor-grown seedlings. Hardening stopped when the photoperiod became constant, indicating a tight coupling between changes in photoperiod and hardiness development. When the photoperiod was held constant, the extent of frost hardiness was directly dependent on the photoperiod but the rate of hardening was apparently independent of the length of photoperiod. However, the rate of hardening was dependent on the rate at which the photoperiod shortened, increasing linearly with increases in the rate of change in photoperiod between 0 and 3 min d?1. These results suggest shortening photoperiods control the first stage of the hardening process by regulating the rate of hardening. Frost hardening was inherently unstable once the maximum hardiness was reached since spontaneous dehardening occurred in spite of the controlled conditions. Dehardening also occurred when the photoperiod was lengthened suggesting that the cue for dehardening to commence was the shift from shortening to lengthening photoperiods.  相似文献

Twelve juvenile pink shrimp, Penaeus duorarum Burkenroad, were tested individually for 3-day periods in electronic shuttleboxes to determine their diel patterns of locomotor activity, in relation to a natural summer photoperiod. Nocturnal activity was twice that exhibited during the daytime; however, a bimodal pattern was evident with crepuscular peaks occurring at dawn and dusk. The dusk peak was more pronounced, with activity increasing markedly before sunset (indicative of an endogenous circadian rhythm component), and continuing during the initial hours of darkness, gradually declining later during the night with a secondary peak at dawn falling off to minimal activity during daylight. Crepuscular activity (mean of dawn and dusk) was twice the nocturnal average.  相似文献

The effect of reversing the natural seasonal change in photoperiod on the feeding and growth of juvenile cod, Gadus morhua . was investigated in two experiments. In an experiment conducted in spring no photoperiod effects on overall growth and food consumption were observed; however, tissue analysis at the end of the experiment showed that treatment groups differed significantly in their muscle water content. A repeat experiment conducted in early winter similarly failed to reveal an effect of photoperiod reversal on overall growth and feeding, although a very marked decline in growth rate was observed for all fish. The decline in growth rate observed in the second experiment cannot be accounted for by any changes in experimental procedure and is interpreted as possible evidence for an endogenous circa-annual rhythm in growth rate.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that the waveform of the rhythm of c-Fos photoinduction in the ventrolateral (vl) part of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and that of the rhythm in the spontaneous c-Fos production in the dorsomedial (dm) part of the SCN in rats released into constant darkness depend on the photoperiod under which the animals were previously maintained. The aim of the present study was to find out how the rhythms of c-Fos immunoreactivity in both SCN subdivisions are affected by actual light-dark (LD) cycles with various photoperiods, either artificial or natural ones, that animals may usually experience. Rats were maintained under artificial LD cycles, with either a long (16-h photoperiod) or a short (8-h photoperiod) or under natural daylight. In the latter case, c-Fos rhythms were followed in the summer when the photoperiod lasted about 16 h or in winter when it lasted only 8 h. The rhythms of c-Fos immunoreactivity under natural daylight did not differ significantly from those under corresponding artificial photoperiods. Under a long photoperiod, the morning c-Fos rise in the dm- as well as in the vl-SCN occurred about 4 h earlier than under a short one. In both SCN subdivisions, the interval when the nighttime c-Fos immunoreactivity was low, was shorter under a long than under a short photoperiod by roughly 6 h. The morning c-Fos rise in the dm-SCN always preceded that in the vl-SCN. Whereas in the former one the rise was due to the endogenous dm-SCN rhythmicity, in the latter one the rise was induced by the morning light onset. The results show that whereas c-Fos rhythmicity under actual LD cycles is affected by the photoperiod in both SCN subdivisions, mechanism of c-Fos induction in the dm-SCN differs from that in the vl-SCN.  相似文献

The effect of feeding time (dawn or midnight) on nitrogen excretion and energy expenditure was studied in immature rainbow trout using measurements of respiratory gas exchange. Fish (mean individual weight 70 g) were maintained indoors under natural photoperiod and fed by hand (commercial food pellets) at a rate of 1% weight/day−1. Rates of ammonia and CO2 excretion and O2 uptake were measured every hour. Ammonia excretion increased immediately after feeding in fish fed at midnight, and 2h after feeding in fish fed at dawn. Ammonia excretion and energy supply from protein catabolism, were higher in trout fed at midnight than in those fed at dawn, while total energy expenditure was the same in both groups. The results suggested that trout fed in phase with their natural feeding rhythm use dietary protein more efficiently for growth than do trout fed out of phase with the natural rhythm.  相似文献
