Data in distributed systems are often replicated into different storage elements in order to facilitate their access. This allows optimizing execution time and bandwidth consumption, ensures load balancing and increases data availability and quality of service. Several replication strategies have then been proposed in the literature. In this work, a new evaluation metric for replication strategies is introduced and experimentally evaluated. This metric, called SAvE, serves to tackle a key feature, although neglected in the literature, which is the ability of a replication strategy to exploit the most available sites in the system. The design of such a metric requires an accurate determination of the availability degree of each site. A new measurement of site availability, denoted SA, is then designed to be integrated into SAvE while overcoming the drawbacks experienced by existing measurements. Extensive experiments are performed using the OptorSim simulator to show the accuracy and the effectiveness of our contributions.  相似文献

Parallel file systems have been developed in recent years to ease the I/O bottleneck of high-end computing system. These advanced file systems offer several data layout strategies in order to meet the performance goals of specific I/O workloads. However, while a layout policy may perform well on some I/O workload, it may not perform as well for another. Peak I/O performance is rarely achieved due to the complex data access patterns. Data access is application dependent. In this study, a cost-intelligent data access strategy based on the application-specific optimization principle is proposed. This strategy improves the I/O performance of parallel file systems. We first present examples to illustrate the difference of performance under different data layouts. By developing a cost model which estimates the completion time of data accesses in various data layouts, the layout can better match the application. Static layout optimization can be used for applications with dominant data access patterns, and dynamic layout selection with hybrid replications can be used for applications with complex I/O patterns. Theoretical analysis and experimental testing have been conducted to verify the proposed cost-intelligent layout approach. Analytical and experimental results show that the proposed cost model is effective and the application-specific data layout approach can provide up to a 74% performance improvement for data-intensive applications.  相似文献

The use of mobile computers is gaining popularity. There is an increasing trend in the number of users with laptops, PDAs, and smart phones. Access to information repositories in the future will be dominated by mobile clients rather than traditional “fixed” clients. These mobile clients download information by periodically connecting to repositories of data stored in either databases or file systems. Such mobile clients constitute a new and different kind of workload and exhibit a different access pattern than seen in traditional client server systems. Though file systems have been modified to handle clients that can download information, disconnect, and later reintegrate, databases have not been redesigned to accommodate mobile clients. There is a need to support mobile clients in the context of client server databases. This paper is about organizing the database server to take into consideration the access patterns of mobile clients. We propose the concept of hoard attributes which capture these access patterns. Three different techniques for organizing data on the server based on the hoard attribute are presented. We argue that each technique is suited for a particular workload. The workload is a combination of requests from mobile clients and traditional clients. This reorganization also allows us to address issues of concurrency control, disconnection and replica control in mobile databases. We present simulation results that show the performance of server reorganization using hoard attributes. We also provide an elaborate discussion of issues resulting from this reorganization in this new paradigm taking into account both mobile and traditional clients. Data availability represents one of the primary functionalities of any cloud storage system since it ensures uninterrupted access to data. A common solution used by service providers that increase data availability and improve cloud performance is data replication. In this paper, we present a dynamic data replication strategy that is based on a hybrid peer-to-peer cloud architecture. Our proposed strategy selects the most popular data for replication. To determine the proper nodes for storing popular data, we employ not only the feature specifications of storage nodes, but also the relevant structural positions in the cloud network. Our simulation results show the impact of using features such as data popularity, and structural characteristics in improving network performance and balancing the storage nodes, and reducing user response time.

Melasma is a common hyperpigmentary disorder. The impact on the quality of life of affected individuals is well demonstrated, demanding new therapeutic strategies. However, the treatment of melasma remains highly challenging. Melasma is often considered as the main consequence of female hormone stimulation on a predisposed genetic background. Although these two factors do contribute to this acquired pigmentary disorder, the last decade has revealed several other key players and brought new pieces to the complex puzzle of the pathophysiology of melasma. Here, we summarize the latest evidence on the pathophysiology of melasma, and we suggest that melasma might be a photoaging skin disorder affecting genetically predisposed individuals. Such data must be taken into consideration by clinicians as they could have a profound impact on the treatment and the prevention of melasma.  相似文献

Passive surveillance systems are widely used to monitor diseases occurrence over wide spatial areas due to their cost-effectiveness and integration into broadly distributed healthcare systems. However, such systems are generally associated with imperfect ascertainment of disease cases and with heterogeneous capture probabilities arising from factors such as differential access to care. Augmenting passive surveillance systems with other surveillance efforts provides a way to estimate the true number of incident cases. We develop a hierarchical modeling framework for analyzing data from multiple surveillance systems that allows for individual-level covariate-dependent heterogeneous capture probabilities, and borrows information across surveillance sites to improve estimation of the true number of incident cases. Inference is carried out via a two-stage Bayesian procedure. Simulation studies illustrated superior performance of the proposed approach with respect to bias, root mean square error, and coverage compared to a model that does not borrow information across sites. We applied the proposed model to data from three surveillance systems reporting pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) cases in a major center of ongoing transmission in China. The analysis yielded bias-corrected estimates of PTB cases from the passive system and led to the identification of risk factors associated with PTB rates, as well as factors influencing the operating characteristics of the implemented surveillance systems.  相似文献

Measuring rates of spread during biological invasions is important for predicting where and when invading organisms will spread in the future as well as for quantifying the influence of environmental conditions on invasion speed. While several methods have been proposed in the literature to measure spread rates, a comprehensive comparison of their accuracy when applied to empirical data would be problematic because true rates of spread are never known. This study compares the performances of several spread rate measurement methods using a set of simulated invasions with known theoretical spread rates over a hypothetical region where a set of sampling points are distributed. We vary the density and distribution (aggregative, random, and regular) of the sampling points as well as the shape of the invaded area and then compare how different spread rate measurement methods accommodate these varying conditions. We find that the method of regressing distance to the point of origin of the invasion as a function of time of first detection provides the most reliable method over adverse conditions (low sampling density, aggregated distribution of sampling points, irregular invaded area). The boundary displacement method appears to be a useful complementary method when sampling density is sufficiently high, as it provides an instantaneous measure of spread rate, and does not require long time series of data.  相似文献

The assessment of human and ecological risks and associated risk-management decisions are characterized by only partial knowledge of the relevant systems. Typically, large variability and measurement errors in data create challenges for estimating risks and identifying appropriate management strategies. The formal quantitative method of decision analysis can help deal with these challenges because it takes uncertainties into account explicitly and quantitatively. In recent years, research in several areas of natural resource management has demonstrated that decision analysis can identify policies that are appropriate in the presence of uncertainties. More importantly, the resulting optimal decision is often different from the one that would have been chosen had the uncertainties not been taken into account quantitatively. Scholarly communication is at an unprecedented turning point created in part by the increasing saliency of data stewardship and data sharing. Formal data management plans represent a new emphasis in research, enabling access to data at higher volumes and more quickly, and the potential for replication and augmentation of existing research. Data sharing has recently transformed the practice, scope, content, and applicability of research in several disciplines, in particular in relation to spatially specific data. This lends exciting potentiality, but the most effective ways in which to implement such changes, particularly for disciplines involving human subjects and other sensitive information, demand consideration. Data management plans, stewardship, and sharing, impart distinctive technical, sociological, and ethical challenges that remain to be adequately identified and remedied. Here, we consider these and propose potential solutions for their amelioration.  相似文献

Genetic mapping is one of the key steps in positional cloning. The traditional mapping strategies typically require to genotype a set of markers that are nearly evenly or randomly distributed across the genome or a region of interest. Such “grid” strategies work with low efficiency. We propose an improved mapping strategy by integrating the principle of one-dimensional optimization and information on physical map into the standard mapping procedure used in experimental populations. Computer simulations based on a set of empirical data suggest that our new procedure can reduce the number of markers required for genotyping to less than one-fourth of that of the standard procedure. An illustrative application also demonstrates a pronounced reduction of the burden in genotyping. The proposed strategy offers a quick and cost-effective access to the target gene for positional cloning without any extra expense except for making use of genomic sequence data. Manipulation of the eukaryotic genome has contributed to the progress in our knowledge of multicellular organisms but has also ameliorated our experimental strategies. Biological questions can now be addressed with more efficiency and reproducibility. There are new and varied strategies for gene transfer and sequence manipulation with improved methodologies that facilitate the acquisition of results. Cellular systems and transgenic animals have demonstrated their invaluable benefits. In this review, I present an overview of the methods of gene transfer with particular attention to cultured cell lines and large-scale sequence vectors, like artificial chromosomes, with the possibility of their manipulation based on homologous recombination strategies. Alternative strategies of gene transfer, including retroviral vectors, are also described and the applications of such methods are discussed. Finally, several comments are made about the influence of chromatin structure on gene expression. Recent experimental data have shown that for convenient stable transgene expression, the influence of chromatin structure should be seriously taken into account. Novel chromatin regulatory and structural elements are proposed as an alternative for proper and sustained gene expression. These chromatin elements are facing a new era in transgenesis and we are probably beginning a new generation of gene and cancer therapy vectors.  相似文献

The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is the primary cause of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which is a slow, progressive and degenerative disease of the human immune system. The pathogenesis of HIV-1 is complex and characterized by the interplay of both viral and host factors. An intense global research effort into understanding the individual steps of the viral replication cycle and the dynamics during an infection has inspired researchers in the development of a wide spectrum of antiviral strategies. Practically every stage in the viral life cycle and every viral gene product is a potential target. In addition, several strategies are targeting host proteins that play an essential role in the viral life cycle. This review summarizes the main genetic approaches taken in such antiviral strategies.  相似文献

A systematic method is presented which is capable of both detecting the presence of grossly biased measurement errors and locating the source of these errors in a bioreactor through statistical hypothesis testing. Equality constraints derived from material and energy balances are employed for the detection of data inconsistencies and for the subsequent identification of the suspect measurements by a process of data analysis and rectification. Maximum likelihood techniques are applied to the estimation of the states and parameters of the bioreactor after the suspect measurements have been eliminated. The level of significance is specified by the experimenter while the measurments are assumed to be randomly, normally distributed with zero mean and known variances. Two different approaches of data analysis, batchwise and sequential, that lead to a consistent set of adjustments on the experimental values, are discussed. Several examples based on the fermentation data taken from literature sources are presented to demonstrate the utility of the proposed method, and one set of data is solved numerically to illustrate the computational aspect of the algorithm.  相似文献

Deadlock-free scheduling of parts is vital for increasing the utilization of an Automated Manufacturing System (AMS). An existing literature survey has identified the role of an effective modeling methodology for AMS in ensuring the appropriate scheduling of the parts on the available resources. In this paper, a new modeling methodology termed as Extended Color Time Net of Set of Simple Sequential Process with Resources (ECTS3PR) has been presented that efficiently handles dynamic behavior of the manufacturing system. The model is subsequently utilized to obtain a deadlock-free schedule with minimized makespan using a new Evolutionary Endosymbiotic Learning Automata (EELA) algorithm. The ECTS3PR model, which can easily handle various relations and structural interactions, proves to be very helpful in measuring and managing system performances. The novel algorithm EELA has the merits of both endosymbiotic systems and learning automata. The proposed algorithm performs better than various benchmark strategies available in the literature. Extensive experiments have been performed to examine the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, and the results obtained over different data sets of varying dimensions authenticate the performance claim. Superiority of the proposed approach has been validated by defining a new performance index termed as the ‘makespan index’ (MI), whereas the ANOVA analysis reveals the robustness of the algorithm.  相似文献

To provide valuable support for successful decision-making, managers need a balanced set of financial and nonfinancial measures that represent different requirements, strategic goals, strategies, resources, and capabilities and the causal relationships between these domains. The balanced scorecard is such a measurement system. As an open system the balanced scorecard facilitates the consideration of sustainability issues. But enhanced balanced scorecards require a new type of data. This is where eco-efficiency analysis comes into play.
This article discusses the relationship between so-called sustainability balanced scorecards and eco-efficiency analysis. Eco-efficiency analysis not only provides a data source for sustainability balanced scorecards; in the perspective of environmental information systems it also serves as a link between the balanced scorecard and corporate environmental accounting systems so that eco-efficiency as a component of an environmental information system becomes an adapter with two interfaces, which are characterized in this article. The main focus is on the principle of cause and effect, its different forms, and the implications for the design of appropriate information system components.  相似文献

HIV dynamics studies have significantly contributed to the understanding of HIV infection and antiviral treatment strategies. But most studies are limited to short-term viral dynamics due to the difficulty of establishing a relationship of antiviral response with multiple treatment factors such as drug exposure and drug susceptibility during long-term treatment. In this article, a mechanism-based dynamic model is proposed for characterizing long-term viral dynamics with antiretroviral therapy, described by a set of nonlinear differential equations without closed-form solutions. In this model we directly incorporate drug concentration, adherence, and drug susceptibility into a function of treatment efficacy, defined as an inhibition rate of virus replication. We investigate a Bayesian approach under the framework of hierarchical Bayesian (mixed-effects) models for estimating unknown dynamic parameters. In particular, interest focuses on estimating individual dynamic parameters. The proposed methods not only help to alleviate the difficulty in parameter identifiability, but also flexibly deal with sparse and unbalanced longitudinal data from individual subjects. For illustration purposes, we present one simulation example to implement the proposed approach and apply the methodology to a data set from an AIDS clinical trial. The basic concept of the longitudinal HIV dynamic systems and the proposed methodologies are generally applicable to any other biomedical dynamic systems.  相似文献

The correlations between three systems of signs have been studied using the results of a complex anthropological examination of 669 young men and girls from 16 to 23 years old, including the measurement of 40 body, head, and face parameters, fingerprinting, and the determination of personal psychophysiologic characteristics based on Eysenck, Spielberger, Strelau and Cattell tests using different methods of the multivariate statistics. The author has suggested the original model of correlations between somatic, dermatoglyphic, and psychological signs in the structure of the general human constitution based on the statistically significant canonical correlations (obtained by the author) and taking into consideration the degree of influence exerted by a genetic and socio-economic complex of factors (according to the literature data) on the development and formation of the investigated systems of signs. The evidences of the concept stipulating the relative autonomy of morphofunctional systems as necessary for the integrity of an organism as a whole are presented according to the results of the work with the anthropologic material.  相似文献
