The Early Miocene sites of Napak (Uganda), which have been prospected by the Uganda Palaeontology Expedition since 1985, have yielded abundant fossil remains, including a rich and diverse rodent fauna. Ever since the work of Lavocat (1973) on the East African Miocene rodents, which focused mainly on the Kenyan remains (but included some material from Napak discovered by Bishop during the 1950s and 1960s), few studies have been made on the Ugandan specimens. This lack provides motivation for further study of Napak micro-mammals, especially the abundant rodents, which were collected at five sites, Napak IV, V, XV, XXX and XXXI. The fossils described here are attributed to six species representing four families: Afrocricetodontidae (Afrocricetodon songhori, Protarsomys macinnesi), Myophiomyidae (Myophiomys arambourgi), Kenyamyidae (Simonimys genovefae, Kenyamys mariae) and Sciuridae (Vulcanisciurus africanus). Comparison of the dentition of extant and extinct taxa allows us to propose dietary hypotheses (granivory, herbivory and omnivory) for these rodents. In addition, the fossil rodents associated with other fauna from the same localities suggest a more-or-less dense forest environment with clearings, and the probable presence of a humid climate at the time of deposition.  相似文献

Since the late 1950's, many ruminant specimens have been recovered from the Early Miocene volcano-sedimentary succession at Napak, Uganda. Beginning in 1958 when the first fossils were recognised by J.G. Wilson, and the subsequent surveys of Bishop and colleagues, more than 340 specimens have been found. Preliminary publications in the 1960's identified three species, Dorcatherium songhorensis, Dorcatherium ? chappuisi, and Palaeomeryx africanus. Napak material hitherto identified as Dorcatherium ? chappuisi represents a new species of tragulid smaller than D. chappuisi, and is here identified as Dorcatherium iririensis nov. sp., while material previously assigned to Palaeomeryx is transferred to Walangania. A new finding for the site is the tiny tragulid, Dorcatherium parvum. There are thus four species of ruminants at Napak.  相似文献

Geological and geomorphological work in the endorheic Murzuq Basin (Fezzan) in the northern Sahara Desert, SW Libya, has revealed that the Middle Pleistocene Al Mahrúqah Formation consists of at least four limestone beds at four distinct elevations. The corresponding limestone beds are named (from oldest to youngest) the Antalkhatá Member, the Brak Member, the Bi'r az Zallaf Member, and the Aqar Member. The four members are interpreted as lacustrine deposits, and they are well distinguished by their spatial extent and lithology. Twenty-five radiometric and thermal ionisation mass spectrometric (TIMS) 230Th/U ages ranging from about 490–130 ka have been determined on these lacustrine limestones. According to these radiometric 230Th/U ages, the accumulation of the four limestone members of the Al Mahrúqah Formation followed the orbitally-forced (Milankovitch) eccentricity cycle of 100 ka during at least the last 400 ka. The four members formed in humid episodes of several tens of thousands of years' duration, when large lakes might have existed. The δ13C and δ18O values from samples of the four members of the Al Mahrúqah Formation provide independent genetic evidence on the lacustrine origin of the deposits in the Murzuq Basin. The spatial extent of the limestone deposits, and thus the intensity of the humid episodes, decreases at least from the Brak Member to the Aqar Member from about 52,000 km2 to 1400 km2, respectively. In spite of the limited precision and reliability of the new 230Th/U ages, it seems possible that short humid episodes interrupted the intervening arid episodes. Other long-term palaeohydrological records from northern and southern Africa as well as the Mediterranean region support the palaeoclimatic results from the Murzuq Basin.  相似文献

Ougandatherium napakense nov. gen. nov. sp., the earliest Rhinocerotidae Iranotheriinae from Africa. The Uganda Palaeontology Expedition discovered an exceptionally rich fossiliferous channel deposit at Napak I, Karamoja, in 1999, which yielded two partial skeletons of a new genus and species of early Miocene Rhinocerotidae, together with various other mammals and gastropods typical of Faunal Set I of East Africa. The age of the deposits on the basis of both faunal correlation (biochronology) and radio-isotopic dating is ca 19–20 Ma. The new genus and species is a hornless rhinoceros about the size of a small horse, with long slender limb bones and metapodials and hypsodont upper cheek teeth whose enamel is undulate, and fossettes cement-filled. Upper premolars possess an inner wall; this is clearly an iranotheriine morphology. As such it is the earliest known African member of this subfamily, close to the oldest member of the subfamily recently discovered at Bugti in Pakistan, a site whose age is about the same.  相似文献

Sterkfontein Caves is the single richest early hominin site in the world with deposits yielding one or more species of Australopithecus and possible early Homo, as well as an extensive faunal collection. The inability to date the southern African cave sites accurately or precisely has hindered attempts to integrate the hominin fossil evidence into pan-African scenarios about human evolutionary history, and especially hominin biogeography. We have used U-Pb and U-Th techniques to date sheets of calcium carbonate flowstone inter-bedded between the fossiliferous sediments. For the first time, absolute age ranges can be assigned to the fossil-bearing deposits: Member 2 is between 2.8 ± 0.28 and 2.6 ± 0.30 Ma and Member 4 between 2.65 ± 0.30 and 2.01 ± 0.05 Ma. The age of 2.01 ± 0.05 Ma for the top of Member 4 constrains the last appearance of Australopithecus africanus to 2 Ma. In the Silberberg Grotto we have reproduced the U-Pb age of ∼2.2 Ma of for the flowstones associated with StW573. We believe that these deposits, including the fossil and the flowstones, accumulated rapidly around 2.2 Ma. The stratigraphy of the site is complex as sediments are exposed both in the underground chambers and at surface. We present a new interpretation of the stratigraphy based on surface mapping, boreholes logs and U-Pb ages. Every effort was made to retain the Member system, however, only Members 2 and 4 are recognized in the boreholes. We propose that the deposits formally known as Member 3 are in fact the distal equivalents of Member 4. The sediments of Members 2 and 4 consisted of cone-like deposits and probably never filled up the cave. The U-Th ages show that there are substantial deposits younger than 400 ka in the underground cave, underlying the older deposits, highlighting again that these cave fills are not simple layer-cakes.  相似文献

Palaeomagnetic analysis was conducted on speleothems from Members 1-5 at Sterkfontein Cave, South Africa. Palaeomagnetic analysis of siltstone and speleothem from the bulk of Member 4 indicate a reversed magnetic polarity that dates the deposits and its Australopithecus africanus fossils to between 2.58 and ∼2.16 Ma. Further confirmation of this age comes in the form of two short normal polarity events correlated to the Rèunion (∼2.16 Ma) and Huckleberry Ridge (∼2.05 Ma) events in speleothem capping the bulk of Member 4 and coeval with deposition of the final phase of Member 4, including A. africanus fossil Sts 5. At ∼2.16-2.05 Ma, Sts 5 is the youngest representative of A. africanus yet discovered. Palaeomagnetic analysis of the Silberberg Grotto deposits identifies a single short geomagnetic field event in flowstone overlying the StW 573 Australopithecus fossil, which is suggested to represent the Rèunion event at ∼2.16 Ma. This further supports the uranium lead age estimates of 2.3-2.2 Ma for the StW 573 fossil. Based on a reversed polarity for the deposits below the skeleton it cannot be older than 2.58 Ma. If StW 573 is considered to be a second species of Australopithecus then this indicates that two species of Australopithecus are present at Sterkfontein between 2.6 and 2.0 Ma. All of the Member 5 deposits date to less than 1.8 Ma based on a comparison of palaeomagnetic, faunal, and electron spin resonance age estimates. The StW 53 fossil bearing infill (M5A) is intermediate in age between Member 4 and the rest of Member 5 (B-C) at around 1.78-1.49 Ma. The rest of Member 5 (B-C) containing Oldowan and Acheulian stone tools and Homo and Paranthropus fossils was deposited gradually between 1.40 and 1.07 Ma, much younger than previously suggested.  相似文献

The Late Tremadoc storm-dominated shoreface to inner platform deposits exposed west of the Purmamarca village (Coquena Formation) contain a considerably more diverse brachiopod fauna than previously reported. Coquinite horizons from the lower heterolitic succession have yielded monospecific associations of Nanorthis purmamarcaensis nov. sp. (formerly assigned to N. christianiae KJERULF), which is also reported from the Late Tremadoc rocks of the Cerro San Bernardo area. The fine-grained Upper Member of the Coquena Formation contains a more diverse fauna composed by Nanorthis brachymyaria nov. sp., Astraborthis quebradensis nov. sp. and the new plectorthid genus Lipanorthis (type species L. andinus nov. sp.). A different species of Lipanorthis (L. santalaurae nov. sp.) from the Mid Tremadoc Floresta Formation of the Sierra de Mojotoro is also described.  相似文献

The Middle Miocene Muruyur Formation (ca 14.5 Ma), Tugen Hills, Kenya, has yielded a huge creodont and a variety of carnivores ranging in size from mongoose-sized viverrids and herpestids to lion-sized amphicyonids. The fauna partly fills what used to be a major gap in our knowledge of Neogene African carnivores, spanning the period between the better known Early Miocene assemblages of western Kenya and eastern Uganda, and the Late Miocene and Plio–Pleistocene faunas of East Africa. Present in the deposits are Megistotherium, two species of Hecubides, one species of Agnotherium, Herpestes, Vishnuictis, and one or two undetermined felids.  相似文献

Carbon and oxygen stable isotopes within modern and fossil tooth enamel record the aspects of an animal''s diet and habitat use. This investigation reports the first isotopic analyses of enamel from a large chimpanzee community and associated fauna, thus providing a means of comparing fossil ape and early hominin palaeoecologies with those of a modern ape. Within Kibale National Park forest, oxygen isotopes differentiate primate niches, allowing for the first isotopic reconstructions of degree of frugivory versus folivory as well as use of arboreal versus terrestrial resources. In a comparison of modern and fossil community isotopic profiles, results indicate that Sivapithecus, a Miocene ape from Pakistan, fed in the forest canopy, as do chimpanzees, but inhabited a forest with less continuous canopy or fed more on leaves. Ardipithecus, an early hominin from Ethiopia, fed both arboreally and terrestrially in a more open habitat than inhabited by chimpanzees.  相似文献

The stratigraphy of the Carboniferous Iraty Formation is described in several sections from the southwestern Alduides-Quinto Real Massif (western Pyrenees), and biostratigraphy is updated based on conodont occurrences. The Ochaverri Member yields upper Serpukhovian conodonts, whereas the lower part of the overlying Asturreta Member is assigned to the lower Bashkirian, according to the occurrences of Declinognathodus noduliferus bernesgae and D. n. noduliferus, respectively. The upper beds of the formation (Baserdi Member) are correlated with the Kinderscoutian to lowermost Marsdenian English substages (lower Bashkirian), and new conodont occurrences are the oldest species of Neognathodus and Idiognathodus known in Spain. We discuss the status of Idiognathoides macer, several species related to I. sinuatus, I. sulcatus and Lochriea glaber. Conodont diversity is related to stratigraphic distribution of species and conodont biofacies. Finally, the lowermost Marsdenian to upper Bashkirian age of the siliciclastic rocks overlying the Iraty Formation is also discussed and compared with known data from localities in the western Pyrenees.  相似文献

The construction of the Neufeld tunnel in Bern city (2006–2008) led to the discovery of fossil mammals in the vicinity of the historical site of Engehalde. The study of the whole available sample led to the distinction of two mammal assemblages: (1) the historical level with the rhinocerotids Diaceratherium lemanense and D. aginense, and the ruminant Andegameryx cf. laugnacensis; (2) the Neufeld level with the artiodactyls Dremotherium feignouxi and Cainotherium sp., the carnivore Plesiogale angustifrons, and the glires Eucricetodon cf. aquitanicus, Peridyromys sp., and Prolagus vasconiensis. These two assemblages attest to a latest Aquitanian age (MN2b) for the last deposits of the ‘Lower Freshwater Molasse’ in the area. The palaeoecological analysis of the faunas indicates either the co-occurrence or the very short-termed succession of assorted terrestrial environments, ranging from forested habitats nearby water bodies or nearby steady rivers to open well-drained habitats within the hinterland.  相似文献

The hormathiid sea anemone Allantactis parasitica was found living as an epibiont on numerous species of gastropods at depths of 725-1100 m along the continental slope of eastern Canada. The proportion of bathyal gastropods hosting 1-6 sea anemones reached 72.5% in a single trawl. Although A. parasitica was occasionally found on other substrata (i.e. empty shells, pebbles), laboratory trials confirmed that they preferably associate with living gastropods. Settlement of planula larvae occurred significantly more often on the shells of live bathyal gastropods than on all other substrata present in the tanks. Juvenile sea anemones (∼ 1 mm diameter) readily moved from the mud or other inert substrata onto shells of burrowed bathyal gastropods. Conversely, larvae, juveniles and adults of A. parasitica never associated with any shallow-water gastropods when given the opportunity. Trials exposing predatory sea stars (Leptasterias polaris) from shallow and bathyal depths to bathyal gastropods (Buccinum undatum) with epibiotic A. parasitica, and to asymbiotic bathyal and shallow-water B. undatum, revealed adaptive behaviours in both prey and predator. Shallow-water gastropods (devoid of epibionts) reacted defensively to L. polaris, whereas bathyal gastropods relied mostly on their epibionts to protect them, thus falling prey to L. polaris when the epibionts were removed. L. polaris from bathyal depths typically ignored symbiotic gastropods, but they consistently preyed on asymbiotic ones, while L. polaris from shallow areas initially attempted to prey on all gastropods, but learned to avoid those harbouring sea anemones. Furthermore, living as epibionts afforded sea anemones a means to escape one of their own predators, the sea star Crossaster papposus. The mutualistic relationship between hormathiid sea anemones and bathyal gastropods from the NW Atlantic may have evolved in response to predation pressure.  相似文献

The distribution of ostracod valves was studied in seven short (< 50 cm) sediment cores collected from the sublittoral-profundal zones (depth > 12 m) of four lowland, dimictic lakes (Kamedu?, Szelment Ma?y, Szelment Wielki and Szurpi?y) situated in the Eastern Suwa?ki Lakeland of NE Poland. These postglacial channel lakes are still moderate in trophy level, but to some extent, they differ from each other in the increase of anthropogenic alterations, especially in their hypolimnion. The studied sediment sequences, corresponding roughly to the period of the last ca. 300 years, yielded ca. 5500 valves of 20 ostracod species, out of which only seven are here considered as the autochthonous profundal component of the fossil assemblages: Candona candida, C. neglecta, Fabaeformiscandona protzi, F. tricicatricosa, Bentocypria curvifurcata, Cytherissa lacustris and Limnocytherina sanctipatricii. Valves of the remaining species were most probably subjected to postmortem transport from shallow water deposits or from lakeside and/or subaqueous springs, and thus were not deposited in situ at the deep bottom. By clustering classification and multi-dimensional scaling ordination, three major assemblage types were recognised in the moderately eutrophicated parts of the studied lakes: (a) assemblage dominated by C. candida, (b) assemblage dominated by C. lacustris and (c) the most diverse assemblage, in which four species (C. lacustris, C. candida, F. protzi and C. neglecta) occur in more or less equal percentages. On the other hand, sediments of the most eutrophic basins of the lakes (especially in Kamedu? and Szelment Ma?y) are characterised by the decline of total valve abundances and complete extinction of C. lacustris, a species indicative of low trophy, so that, in extreme cases, a few valves (if any) of more eurytopic or only allochthonous species could be found in some of the uppermost layers. Successional transitions of the recognised assemblage types are discussed according to the generalised model of the deep lacustrine ostracod succession previously established for the Polish lakes on the country scale. The recorded assemblages correspond well with the trophic diversity of the studied lakes, confirming inferences based on previously published data on other trophy indices from this area. Finally, additional data on modern profundal ostracod fauna from dredge samples of the studied lakes are also provided.  相似文献

A new stratigraphic unit (named LM unit) located at the base of the Pliocene marine succession in the eastern sector of the Malaga Basin has been distinguished. This unit is composed of two fining-upward sequences bounded by a discontinuity related to synsedimentary tectonic activity. Both sequences are made up of basal alluvial deposits overlain by subaquatic deposits. The lower sequence contains rich mollusc faunas characterized by bivalves Lymnocardiinae and Dreissenidae of Paratethyan origin, and non-marine gastropods, typical of oligo-low mesohaline shallow waters, and low diversified ostracod faunas of Paratethyan origin (Loxocorniculina djafarovi, Tyrrhenocythere pontica, Euxinocythere (Maeotocythere) praebaquana and Amnicythere propinqua) typical of low mesohaline waters. Alternances of monospecific ostracod assemblages made of Cyprideis agrigentina or oligotypic assemblages made of C. agrigentina and Loxoconcha spp. and richer assemblages made of L. djafarovi accompanied by several Amnicythere spp. and Camptocypria sp.1 characterize the upper sequence, pointing to more unstable environment affected by salinity and depth changes. Some samples collected from this upper sequence yielded rare, planktonic and benthic foraminifera, which could suggest the sporadic establishment of quasi-normal marine conditions in the westernmost Mediterranean during the deposition of this sequence. The palaeontological data and the palaeomagnetic results obtained in both the LM unit and the overlying Pliocene marine sediments restrict the age of the former to the post-evaporitic late Messinian. The age and the environmental conditions correlate these deposits with the Lago-Mare event occurring throughout the Mediterranean before the quick and widespread marine flooding of the Mediterranean at the beginning of the Pliocene.  相似文献

In almost all Rhaetian marine assemblages of the Tethyan Realm, two dinoflagellate cyst species, Dapcodinium priscum EVITT, 1961, emend. Below, 1987, and Rhaetogonyaulax rhaetica (SARJEANT) LOEBLICH and LOEBLICH, 1976, emend. Harland et al., 1975, emend. Below 1987 are dominant. Thus, when one is relatively frequent the other scarce and vice versa. This paper considers the inverse relationship of the two species in 235 rock samples taken from Rhaetian strata well exposed along the western margin of the Mesozoic intracratonic basin of south-eastern France. The palynological variables recorded from the samples (seven types of phytoclasts and three marine taxa: Dpriscum, Rrhaetica and micrhystridids) were submitted to principal components analysis, which shows that Dpriscum occurs in deposits that reflect nearshore and restricted marine environments. Rrhaetica is indicative of more marine environments at greater water depth, as indicated by the relatively high proportions of buoyant needle-like phytoclasts. These observations suggest that Dpriscum is the cyst of an opportunistic, euryhaline dinoflagellate taxon that occupied various ecological niches while Rrhaetica inhabited more normal open marine environments. The palaeoenvironmental distribution seems to have been influenced by the energy level of the water column. Dpriscum is found in deposits that denote high to low energy while Rrhaetica is found in low energy sediments. Micrhystridid occurrences are similar to those of Dpriscum; they are uncommon when the abundance of Rrhaetica increases.  相似文献

The structure, function, and ecosystem services of tropical forest depend on its species richness, diversity, dominance, and the patterns of changes in the assemblages of tree populations over time. Long-term data from permanent vegetation plots have yielded a wealth of data on the species diversity and dynamics of tree populations, but such studies have only rarely been undertaken in tropical forest landscapes that support large human populations. Thus, anthropogenic drivers and their impacts on species diversity and community structure of tropical forests are not well understood. Here we present data on species diversity, community composition, and regeneration status of tropical forests in a human-dominated landscape in the Western Ghats of southern India. Enumeration of 40 plots (50 m × 20 m) results a total of 106 species of trees, 76 species of saplings and 79 species of seedlings. Detrended Correspondence Analysis ordination of the tree populations yielded five dominant groups, along disturbance and altitudinal gradients on the first and second axes respectively. Abundant species of the area such as Albizia amara, Nothopegia racemosa and Pleiospermum alatum had relatively few individuals in recruiting size classes. Our data indicate probable replacement of rare, localized, and old-growth ‘specialists’ by disturbance-adapted generalists, if the degradation is continuing at the present scale.  相似文献

The conservation of gorillas (Gorilla spp.) and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) depends upon knowledge of their densities and distribution throughout their ranges. However, information about ape populations in swamp forests is scarce. Here we build on current knowledge of ape populations by conducting line transect surveys of nests throughout a reserve dominated by swamp forest: the Lac Télé Community Reserve in northern Congo. We estimated gorilla and chimpanzee densities, distributions across habitats, and seasonal changes in abundance. Gorilla density was 2.9 gorillas km–2, but densities varied by habitat (0.3–5.4 gorillas km–2) with highest densities in swamp forest and terra firma mixed forest. Average chimpanzee density is 0.7 chimpanzees km–2 (0.1–1.3 chimpanzees km–2), with highest densities in swamp forest. Habitat was the best predictor of ape nest abundance, as neither the number of human indices nor the distance from the nearest village predicted nest abundance. We recorded significantly greater numbers of apes in terra firma forest during the high-water season than the low-water season, indicating that many gorillas and chimpanzees are at times concentrated in terra firma forest amid a matrix of swamp forest. Seasonally high numbers of apes on terra firma forest islands easily accessible to local people may expose them to substantial hunting pressure. Conversely, the nearly impenetrable nature of swamp forests and their low value for logging makes them promising sites for the conservation of apes.  相似文献

Understanding the regeneration potential of tree species in natural forest ecosystems is crucial to deliver suitable management practices for conservation of biodiversity. We studied the variation in structural diversity and regeneration potential of tree species in three different tropical forest types, namely: Dry Deciduous forest (DDF), Moist Deciduous forest (MDF) and Semi-evergreen forest (SEF) of Similipal Biosphere Reserve (SBR), Eastern India. Random sample plots were laid for studying the diversity and distribution pattern of tree, sapling, and seedling stages of the tree species. A total of 84 species belong to 73 genera and 35 families were recorded from the study area. The highest species richness was reported for tree (54 species) in DDF, sapling (24 species) in MDF and seedling (22 species each) in SEF and DDF. The overall density of trees with GBH (Girth at Breast Height) ≥ 10 cm was 881 individuals/ha. The regeneration potential of tree species was poor in DDF (39%) where as it was fair in SEF (43%) and MDF (49%). Most of the dominant tree species at each forest type performed good regeneration. The species such as Ehretia laevis Roxb., Bridelia retusa (L.)A.Juss., Mitragyna parviflora (Roxb.) Korth., Terminalia tomentosa Wight & Arn., Terminalia chebula Retz., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb.etc. had either no regeneration or poor regeneration potential need immediate attention for conservation measures. The diversity of standing trees did not correlate with seedling or sapling diversity in all the cases but there was significant correlation among seedling and sapling diversity found in DDF (r = 0.67, p ≤ 0.05) and SEF (r = 0.83, p ≤ 0.05). Further, the diversity of tree species increased with their age (trees > saplings > seedlings) and the stem density decreased with their age (trees < saplings < seedlings) in all three forest types. The results of our study would be helpful in understanding the structural attributes, diversity and regeneration potential of different tropical forest types of India for their better conservation and management.  相似文献
