Because closely related species are likely to be ecologically similar owing to common ancestry, they should show some degree of differentiation in order to coexist. We studied 2 morphologically similar congeneric species, the golden-brown mouse lemur (Microcebus ravelobensis) and the gray mouse lemur (M. murinus). These species are found in partial sympatry in the dry deciduous forest in northwestern Madagascar. We investigated whether 1) feeding niche differentiation and/or 2) a reduction in locomotor activity during periods of food shortage, which might reflect an energy saving strategy, can explain the coexistence of these 2 lemur species. To obtain feeding and behavioral data, we conducted focal observations of 11 female Microcebus murinus and 9 female M. ravelobensis during 11 months from 2007 to 2008 and collected fecal samples for 6 mo. We monitored the phenology of 272 plant specimens and trapped arthropods to determine food availability. Results revealed interspecific differences in 1) relative proportion of consumed food resources, resulting in a merely partial dietary overlap, and in 2) relative importance of seasonally varying food resources throughout the year. In addition, females of Microcebus murinus showed a reduction in locomotor activity during the early dry season, which might reflect an energy-saving strategy and might further reduce potential competition with M. ravelobensis over limited food resources. To conclude, a combination of interspecific feeding niche differentiation and differences in locomotor activity appears to facilitate the coexistence of Microcebus murinus and M. ravelobensis.  相似文献

Phylogeographic and population genetic studies using sequence information are frequently used to infer species boundaries and history; and to assess hybridization and population level processes. In this study, partial mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region (423 bp) and cytochrome b sequences (666 bp) of Oryx beisa sampled from five isolated localities in its entire current range in Africa were analyzed to investigate the extent of genetic variation and differentiation between populations. We observed high nucleotide diversity at the control region in the total sample (6.3%) but within populations, it varied considerably ranging from 1.6% to 8.1%. Population pairwise genetic differentiation was generally significantly high (ranging from F ST = 0.15, P<0.01 to F ST = 0.54, P<0.001). In the total sample, 29 and 12 haplotypes were observed in the control region and the cytochrome b data sets respectively. For both data sets, the haplotypes cluster into three distinct clades (sequence divergence ranged from 6.0%–12.9% to 0.8%–1.0% for the control region and cytochrome b sequences, respectively) that do not correspond to sampling locations. Two of these clades are found in the same localities (Samburu and Marsabit), which represent the O.beisa beisa subspecies, whereas the last clade represents the fringe-eared oryx (O. beisa callotis). We interpret these findings in terms of an ancient hybridization and introgression between two formerly isolated taxa of Oryx beisa.  相似文献

Oxytropis chankaensis Jurtz. (Fabaceae) is an endangered perennial tetraploid species endemic to the Khanka Lake coast. In Russia, O. chankaensis is distributed across a very restricted zone along the western shore of this lake. To characterise all known populations of this species, we assessed the genetic diversity of four noncoding regions of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA). Variable sites detected within the trnLtrnF, the petGtrnP, and the trnStrnG regions allowed the identification of seven haplotypes. On the other hand, no variation was found in the trnHpsbA region. O. chankaensis exhibited an overall low level of nucleotide diversity (π = 0.00052) but a marked haplotype diversity (h = 0.718). A combination of three or four haplotypes was found in each population, and most of the cpDNA variation (above 90%) was distributed within populations. The level of genetic structure that we detected in O. chankaensis using maternal plastid DNA markers was much lower (G ST = 0.037) than the average that is estimated for angiosperms. We found no evidence for isolation by distance or for phylogeographic structuring in O. chankaensis. Our data suggest that autopolyploidy has arisen more than once in the evolutionary history of this species. Repetitive expansion and contraction during past and ongoing demographic events both seem to be involved in shaping the current genetic structure of O. chankaensis. This study provides valuable information for developing the most appropriate strategy for conserving this endemic species with a narrow habitat range.  相似文献

Sharks of the genus Rhizoprionodon are among the most important predators along the coastal marine ecosystems, and they represent an important economic resource for the small-scale fisheries. To properly manage and conserve exploited shark species, detailed analyses of their population structure are needed. To evaluate the gene flow and levels of the genetic diversity among populations of the Caribbean sharpnose shark R. porosus, we identified the nucleotide sequence based on collections (n = 321 specimens) from 10 different areas, including the Caribbean Sea and several locations along the entire Brazilian coast. The analysis of 802 nucleotides from the mitochondrial DNA control region revealed 53 distinct haplotypes. The majority of these haplotypes were restricted to their collection locales with a significant genetic structure detected among the overall populations (Φ ST  = 0.237, P < 0.0001). The data suggest a population division with two distinct management units in the western Atlantic. These management units are likely separated by the Equatorial Current. The strong population structure in R. porosus indicates that regional populations, if depleted, will not recover swiftly through immigration.  相似文献

To evaluate the potential invasiveness of pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus introduced to northwestern European inland waters, growth and reproduction traits were examined in ten populations along a trajectory spanning northwestern Europe (Norway, England, Holland, Belgium and France) and evaluated in light of published dataset from Europe. In the 848 pumpkinseed captured, maximum age was 3–4 years, with a sex ratio near unity in all but one population. Significant variations with increasing latitude were observed in adult growth (age 2–3 increment in total length, TL) and mean age at maturity (A M), with non-significant variations observed in juvenile growth (TL at age 2), sex ratio and gonado-somatic index. As observed elsewhere in Europe, mean A M decreased significantly with increasing TL at age 2. Using this relationship, which has been proposed elsewhere as a potential predictive model of pumpkinseed invasiveness, eight of the ten populations could be provisionally categorized as ‘non-invasive’ (five populations), ‘transitional’ (one population) and ‘potentially invasive’ (two populations), with two populations not categorized due to insufficient data. Based on the available knowledge on each population, the relationship between juvenile growth and age at maturity appeared to predict reasonably the status of pumpkinseed in northwestern Europe and its applicability to other species should be tested.  相似文献

The analysis of 135 mitochondrial D-loop sequences of the Iberian autochthonous red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) from wild population hunting bags from various locations and fowl runs in Spain yielded 37 different haplotypes. Among these, three haplotypes correspond to chukar partridges (Alectoris chukar), indicating genetic introgression from birds illegally introduced for restocking: three individuals carrying such haplotypes where found in natural populations, one appeared among those sampled on a mass reproduction farm and the remaining 10 in another fowl-run. The geographical origin of the contaminating chukar haplotypes could be assigned to the most easterly area of the chukar partridge geographical distribution in China. Molecular diversity parameters in the A. rufa samples indicate a considerable amount of genetic variation. ΦST showed significant differences among populations that are not explained by geographical distance alone. Particularly, one northern population (Palencia) shows a certain degree of genetic differentiation that could reflect a previously suggested subspecies division. Berchemiella wilsonii var. pubipetiolata (Rhamnaceae) is an endangered tree in eastern China. Habitat destruction has resulted in fragmentation of remnant populations and extinction of local populations. AFLP and cpDNA markers were used to determine the population structure of remnant populations of B. wilsonii var. pubipetiolata. Moderate nuclear genomic diversity was found within each of the four remnant populations (H S = 0.141–0.172), while the cpDNA haplotype diversity in each population ranged from 0.356 to 0.681. Six haplotypes were identified by a combined cpRFLP and cpSSR analysis in a total of 89 individuals. AMOVA revealed significantly AFLP genetic differentiation within and between regions (ΦSC = 0.196, ΦCT = 0.396, respectively), and a high cpDNA haplotype differentiation between regions (ΦCT = 0.849). The results suggest low gene flow between populations of B. wilsonii var. pubipetiolata. Strong genetic divergence between two regional populations as revealed by both AFLP and cpDNA markers provided convincing evidence that two distinct evolutionary lineages existed, and should be recognized as ‘evolutionary significant units’ (ESUs) for conservation concerns.  相似文献

Microbiota decussata Kom. (Cupressaceae) is a subalpine species endemic to the Sikhote Alin Mountains with populations scattered throughout the range. We used sequence data for four noncoding regions of chloroplast DNA to characterize the genetic diversity in populations sampled from different parts of M. decussata natural range. No variation was observed in the trnT–trnF region, whereas the trnH–psbA, trnS–trnfM, and trnS–trnG regions showed polymorphisms. At the species level, we found a low nucleotide diversity (π = 0.0009) and high haplotype diversity (h = 0.981) as well as high differentiation (ΦST = 0.420). N ST and G ST values suggested the existence of a phylogeographic structure in M. decussata. The observed patterns of diversity could be explained in part by ecological features of the species and its long-term persistence throughout the range with population expansion, successive fragmentation and isolation.  相似文献

Understanding processes affecting the distribution and abundance of organisms is a central issue in ecology and conservation biology. In northwestern Madagascar, we found an uneven distribution pattern of the golden-brown mouse lemur (Microcebus ravelobensis) and the grey mouse lemur (M. murinus). In one area (JBA) the two species lived sympatrically, whereas in another forest area (JBB) Microcebus ravelobensis occurred exclusively. To investigate whether differences in forest structure may explain this uneven distribution, we conducted a microhabitat analysis and related it to specific distribution. In JBA the habitat of Microcebus ravelobensis was characterized by a higher percentage of trees with many lianas and a higher cover of the herb layer, whereas that of M. murinus had a higher number of trees with a diameter at breast height (DBH) >10 cm. The comparison of the forest structure of the microhabitats of the two species between JBA and JBB revealed further differences. The cover of the overstory, the percentage of trees without lianas and the number of larger trees (DBH >10 cm) among the microhabitats were higher for Microcebus murinus in JBA than for M. ravelobensis in JBB whereas the microhabitats of M. ravelobensis at the two sites did not differ concerning these vegetation structures. Differences between the two species coincide with those of resources important for survival. Our results indicate the importance of microhabitat analyses for the understanding of distribution patterns of species and for successful conservation planning.  相似文献

A phylogeographic analysis of two bagrid catfishes in Taiwan was conducted using sequence data from a portion of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region. For Pseudobagrus brevianalis, which is most probably endemic to Taiwan, a total of eight haplotypes were detected in 189 specimens from nine river systems covering its entire distribution range, from northern to central western areas of the island. Obvious genetic differentiation was observed among its populations (average F ST = 0.753); in particular, the northernmost Tamsui River population was fixed for a single endemic haplotype. Nested clade phylogeographic analysis (NCPA) indicated that the dispersal center of mtDNA was the area around the Touchien River and Holong River, north to the Miaoli Plateau, in northwestern Taiwan, suggesting both northward and southward dispersal in this species. There was no evidence for the validity of P. taiwanensis, the nominal species described from Taiwan, morphologically similar to P. brevianalis. We confirmed that P. adiposalis was distributed discontinuously in three river systems; analysis of 42 specimens from the rivers indicated a total of four haplotypes and population differentiation (average F ST = 0.876). Fixation into a largely differentiated haplotype in the northernmost Tamsui River population was also found in this species, but different processes for this phylogeographic pattern were implied for the two species. Comparison with P. ussuriensis, a widespread continental species morphologically similar to P. adiposalis, suggested the possibility that P. adiposalis is a group of local populations of P. ussuriensis in Taiwan. Two migration routes vs. random fixation scenarios for the population structure of P. adiposalis are discussed with information on other fishes and the geological history of the island.  相似文献

In order to elucidate genetic composition of European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) populations in the Western Balkans, the partial mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region was sequenced and 12 microsatellite loci genotyped in 14 populations originating from tributaries of the Adriatic and Danube drainages. Eleven mtDNA haplotypes were found, one confined to the Adriatic clade, one to the Alpine group and the rest to the ‘Balkan’ grayling phylogenetic clade. Haplotypes from the Balkan clade were confined to the Danube drainage and constituted two groups: northern group with haplotypes found in the Slovenian part of the Danube drainage, and southern group, consisting from Bosnia–Herzegovina and Montenegro. Substantial genetic distance between northern and southern groups of haplotypes (0.75–1.8%) and well supported divisions within the northern group indicate very structured grayling population within the studied Danube basin that most probably did not evolve due to vicariance but rather as a consequence of multiple colonization waves that might have occurred during the Pleistocene. Furthermore, genetic distance of ~4% between Adriatic and Danube populations’ haplotypes, suggest that their separation occurred in mid-Pliocene. These findings imply a complex colonization pattern of the Western Balkans drainages. Microsatellite data also confirm high genetic diversity in Western Balkans populations of grayling (on average 7.5 alleles per microsatellite locus and H exp 0.58). Limited stocking activities were detected based on microsatellites and mtDNA data. Regarding current knowledge of grayling phylogeography appropriate management strategies were proposed to preserve unique, autochthonous grayling populations in Western Balkan.  相似文献

Cinnamomum kanehirae Hayata (Lauraceae), the most valuable subtropical and temperate broadleaf timber tree in Taiwan, is rapidly disappearing from the wild. Taking advantage of a scion garden established by the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute, we examined patterns of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) variations in 19 populations including 94 individuals. By sequencing two cpDNA fragments using universal primers (the trnL-trnF and petG-trnP intergenic spacers), we found eight polymorphic sites, six haplotypes, and extremely low nucleotide diversity (π = 0.00016) from 792 bp aligned sequences. The ancestral haplotype is widely distributed. Among the populations studied, three separated populations, at Yungfeng, Fuli, and Tahu have high nucleotide diversity. No phylogeographical structures of haplotypes were revealed because the tests of N STG ST for populations did not differ from zero in any situations; a ‘star-like’ genealogy is characteristic when all haplotypes rapidly coalesce and is a general outcome of population expansion. The neutrality test also suggested demographic expansion. The genetic divergence and diversity analyses suggested that two potential refugia existed during the last glaciation with a major one located in southeastern Taiwan and a minor one located in Tahu in north-central Taiwan in the Hsuehshan Range, west of the Central Mountain Range.  相似文献

Sequence variation of the 5′ end of the mitochondrial DNA control region (600 bp) was examined in the population samples of Eurasian wigeon Anas penelope from Anadyr’ and Primorye. A total of 11 different mtDNA haplotypes were identified, with one of these belonging to American wigeon Anas americana. The presence of the mtDNA haplotype from the species closely relative to A. penelope in the Anadyr’ sample can be considered as the genetic evidence in favor of interspecific hybridization. This suggestion is in the good agreement with ornithological data. Genetic differentiation of the Primorye and Anadyr’ populations was low (Φst = 0.096). The phylogeographic structure was not pronounced.  相似文献

This study determined the sequences of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) trnL-F non-coding regions of individuals of a tropical coniferous species, Dacrydium pectinatum, collected from 12 natural populations located in Hainan Province, southern China. Sequence length varied from 868 bp to 876 bp, indicating length polymorphism. Base composition in the sequences was high in A+T content between 64.17% and 64.95%, and no recombination event occurred (Rm = 0). Thirty haplotypes were identified based on statistical parsimony algorithm by running the TCS program. Populations of D. pectinatum in Hainan were lacking genetic differentiation. Such a deduction was supported by the observed F ST values (0.00), AMOVA (24.17% of molecular variance attributed to difference among populations, P>0.05), high values of Nm (ranging from 1.92 to 2.50) and the branching structure in neighbor-joining (NJ) tree constructed from haplotypes. A ‘star-like’ pattern was exhibited in the TCS network of trnL-F haplotypes, and majority of the haplotypes coalesced near the tips in NJ tree. Gene genealogies of cpDNA haplotypes proposed a recent population expansion of D. pectinatum in Hainan, which was further supported by the results from Tajima’s D test and mismatch distribution analysis. Our data, in conjunction with geological and palynological evidences, showed that in the Holocene, due to global warming, refugee populations of D. pectinatum in Hainan might experience a range expansion. __________ Translated from Acta Scientiarum Naturalium Universitatis Sunyatseni, 2005, 44(5): 70–74 [译自: 中山大学学报 (自然科学版), 2005, 44(5): 70–74]  相似文献

Genotyping of 313 random individuals belonging to ten different population groups from three different states of India was performed for polymorphic pentanucleotide repeat present in the 5′ flanking region of nitric oxide synthase gene (NOS2A) to study the effect of geographical and linguistic affiliations on the genetic affinities among these groups. Likelihood ratio tests showed that all the ten populations for this locus were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Eleven different alleles ranging from 7 repeat to 17 repeats and 46 different genotypes were observed. The observed and the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.72–0.94 and 0.84–0.89, respectively. The discriminating power of this locus is ≥ 0.86 and the polymorphism information content of this locus in ten population groups ranged from 0.80 to 0.85. High PIC, PD and PE value of this STR showed this marker to be informative and can be used for DNA typing and population studies. The eight populations from Kerala showed a lower G ST value of 0.016 compared to the G ST of ten populations (G ST = 0.019), thereby showing that the populations from the same state showed higher genetic proximity probably due to linguistic and geographical proximity between them. The variation and composition of Mexican wild trout mitochondrial DNA haplotypes throughout northwestern Mexico was determined by means of polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment polymorphism analysis (PCR–RFLP), of one region of mitochondrial DNA between cytochrome b and the D-loop. This analysis was based on 261 specimens taken in 12 basins and four hatcheries from northwestern Mexico. From 23 haplotypes, 15 wild trout haplotypes were identified and classified in four groups: (1) one restricted to Nelson’s trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss nelsoni), (2) four restricted to Río Mayo and RíoYaqui trout (O. mykiss sspp.), (3) six to Mexican golden trout (O. chrysogaster) with two subgroups, and (4) one exclusive to Río Piaxtla trout. Distributions of native haplotypes broadly overlap the distribution of non-native hatchery rainbow trout reflecting the historical management of introductions of exotic rainbow trout and the artificial transference of these trout among basins.  相似文献

Studies on the impact of habitat loss on species occurrence consistently find that the amount of habitat (measured as patch area) is a major determinant of species occurrence at a patch-level. However, patch-level research may fail to detect important patterns and processes only observable at a landscape-level. A landscape-level approach that incorporates species-specific scale responses is needed to better understand what drives species occurrence. Our aim was to determine the landscape-level scale of effect of habitat amount on the occurrence of three species of nocturnal lemurs (Cheirogaleus medius, Microcebus murinus, and M. ravelobensis). We surveyed line transects to determine the occurrence of three lemur species within a fragmented landscape of deciduous dry forest and anthropogenic grassland in northwestern Madagascar. To determine the scale of effect of habitat loss on lemur occurrence, we compared logistic regression models of occurrence against habitat amount among eight different landscape scales using Akaike's Information Criterion values. We found differing scale responses among the lemurs in our study. Occurrence of C. medius responded to habitat amount at scales between 0.5–4 ha, M. murinus at scales between 1 and 4 ha and M. ravelobensis at scales between 0.125 and 4 ha. We suggest that the scale of effect for C. medius is mediated by their ability to hibernate. A relatively lower scale-response for Microcebus spp. likely reflect their omnivorous diet, small habitat requirements, and limited dispersal ability. Differences in scale responses between M. murinus and M. ravelobensis are likely a result of differing dispersal ability and responses to edge effects between these species. Our study is among the first on lemurs to show the value of a landscape-level approach when assessing the effects of habitat loss on species occurrence.  相似文献

In depth genetic comparisons of populations of Cutleria multifida (Tilopteridales, Phaeophyceae) collected from Europe, the northwestern Pacific Ocean, Australia and New Zealand using the DNA sequences of four gene regions (the mitochondrial cox2 and cox3 genes, the intergeneric spacer region adjacent to cox3, and the open reading frame) suggested that the northwestern European and Japanese populations were considerably greater in terms of their genetic divergence than Mediterranean, Australian or New Zealand populations. The haplotypes of the populations in northwestern European (distribution range including the type locality, seven haplotypes) and Japanese populations (seven haplotypes) were unique except for one shared haplotype. There were weak but positive correlations between the geographical distance and the genetic divergence among northwestern European and Japanese populations. Moreover, both female and male gametophytes occurred in eight of the nine Japanese localities, suggesting Japanese populations showed normal sexual heteromorphic life history of the species. In light of these results, it appears that Japanese populations were native to the area despite earlier hypothesis. In contrast, Australian and New Zealand populations were composed of only one haplotype that is very close to those found in northwestern Europe and Japan, suggesting a recent introduction history from Europe (or from northeastern Asia via Europe) by ship transport to Australia and New Zealand. The Mediterranean populations included two haplotypes identical to those found in northwestern Europe and Japan, and it is suggestive of transoceanic introductions of some populations between Mediterranean and Japanese coasts.  相似文献

To investigate the genetic population structure of a reef goby, Bathygobius cocosensis, in the northwestern Pacific in relation to major oceanic currents (North Equatorial and Kuroshio Currents), the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) phylogeny and demography of the species were inferred from partial nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase 5 subunit (ND5) gene (945 bp). The resultant mtDNA tree and population genetic analyses showed that the Bonin Islands’ population apparently differed from the other populations in the Japan–Ryukyu–Guam region, which lie along the routes of the North Equatorial and Kuroshio Currents. A test calculation indicated the divergence date to be approximately 1 million years ago. The population expansion parameters indicated that the Bonin Islands’ population had survived during the fluctuations in sea level in the Pleistocene–Holocene age and that the population had expanded thereafter.  相似文献
