Our theory for photoreceptor bleaching (Leibovic and Kurtz, 1975; Leibovic, 1975) is extended to the isolated retina, a preparation often used in experimental research. Experimental data are presented which demonstrate good agreement with the theory, and it is shown that bleaching history can affect the final result. Since our theory includes a lumped intermediate state of bleaching, it is superior to theories which only consider end products. On the other hand, our theory is more tractable than others which specify several intermediates.  相似文献

The interaction of light and visual pigment is modeled in terms of a three component process, as in Leibovic and Kurtz (1974), but extended to continuous illumination. Based on the model, it is possible to deduce some of the rate constants from first principles and to derive a value for the empirically known light intensity to bleach half the pigment.  相似文献

本文以精子发生中线粒体衍生体的演化为主要线索系统描述了短翅华癞蝗(Sinotme-thisbrachypterus)精子尾部演化过程,并参照Szollosi(1975)的文章将整个过程分为10个阶段。与飞蝗(Locustamigratoria)精子发生中尾部演化过程(Szollosi,1975)相比较,两者间1至6期及9期精细胞尾部结构惊人地相似,而7、8两期精细胞尾部线粒体衍生体周围微管排列及分布有所差异,第10期即精子的中心粒侧体及线粒体衍生体超微结构有明显不同。  相似文献

Nerve terminal regions in walking leg opener muscles of several crayfish of different ages (0 to 245 days after hatching) were examined by means of electron microscopy. This muscle is innervated by two axons (excitatory and inhibitory) and at maturity contains three classes of synapse: excitatory and inhibitory neuromuscular synapses, and inhibitory axo-axonal synapses. The muscle itself is initially a syncytium, which gradually becomes subdivided into distinct “muscle fibers” as the animal matures. Innervation was not found in the opener muscle just before or just after hatching, but was present in restricted locations on the inner side of the muscle within a few days of hatching. As the muscle enlarged and became subdivided, innervation appeared in various other locations. Synaptic contacts were located in young stages soon after hatching, and in later stages. Morphological differences characteristic of excitatory and inhibitory nerve terminals could be found even at the earliest stages of innervation. Both excitatory and inhibitory synapses, but particularly the former, showed evidence of progressive enlargement to a final size within the first two months, and no evidence for further enlargement of existing synapses thereafter. Synaptic maturation also involved the appearance of presynaptic “dense bodies” thought to be regions at which transmitter substance is preferentially released. Nerve terminals at different levels of maturation were observed in opener muscles of young crayfish. Clear evidence for differential maturation of the three types of synapse present in this muscle was obtained. The inhibitory neuromuscular synapses attained their final average size and developed their dense bodies sooner than the excitatory neuromuscular synapses. The inhibitory axo-axonal synapses were the last to appear and to mature.  相似文献

Electron microscope serial section reconstruction analysis of all zygotene-pachytene nuclei of meiotic cells from three wild-type germaria (a subunit of the ovary containing the early meiotic stages arrayed in temporal developmental sequence) of Drosophila melanogaster females corroborates and extends earlier observations (Carpenter 1975a) on the nature and sequence of ultrastructural events occurring during the time of meiotic recombination. Emphasis has been placed on (1) the time of appearance and disappearance of the synaptonemal complex (SC) and the changes in its dimensions that accompany a cell's progression through pachytene, and (2) the appearance, disappearance, number and chromosomal locations of recombination nodules (Carpenter 1975b). For both the SC and the recombination nodule the availability of several developmental series has provided an estimate of the biological variability in the properties of these recombination-associated structures. The much more extensive data presented here substantiate the earlier hypothesis that recombination nodules occur at sites where reciprocal meiotic recombination will occur, has occurred, or is occurring. A second morphological type of recombination nodule is reported; it is suggested that the presence of the latter type of nodule may correlate with sites of gene conversion. The hypothesis that there may be two types of meiotic recombination processes is discussed.  相似文献

An attempt has been made to study the significance of dew in the sand dune areas of India. Dew data recorded by Duvdevani dew gauges at three India Meteorological Stations (Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Ganganagar) with dew so recorded at four different heights i.e., 5 cm, 25 cm, 50 cm and 100 cm above the ground from 1973 to 1976 is taken for analysis. Mean monthly dew amount per dew night for the three stations at all the four heights is presented and discussed. Variation of mean seasonal (September to April) dew amount with height is also presented. It is found that higher amounts of dew deposit occur during the three months December to February. The data for the year having maximum dew fall (1975–76) is taken and analysed in terms of rainfall and potential evapotranspiration during the season. Ganganagar shows highest percentage of dew in 1975–76 when compared to actual seasonal rainfall (37%) and normal seasonal rainfall (27%); which is about 14% of the actual potential evapotranspiration and 18% of the normal potential evapotranspiration. Techniques standardized for afforesting shifting sand dunes are mentioned and recommended tree species for afforestation are presented.  相似文献

Nonclassical synaptic functions are considered in two groups, mainly by reference to the models provided by sympathetic ganglia. Slow postsynaptic potentials (PSPs) are compared with classical fast PSPs. Features include loose delivery of transmitter to receptor, very long synaptic delays and durations of PSPs, slow removal of transmitter or of its effects, integration of repetitive inputs, electrogenesis without large increases in ionic conductances. Neuromodulatory actions affect synaptic efficacy without direct excitatory or inhibitory responses to the transmitter. These include a) control of presynaptic release, and b) contingent postsynaptic actions. In b, a modulatory transmitter alters the efficacy of action by another transmitter. The alteration may persist long after exposure to the modulatory transmitter; in mammalian sympathetic ganglia, exposure to dopamine or to a conditioning train of preganglionic volleys induces a long-term enhancement of the muscarinic slow excitatory PSP. Or the alteration may be restricted mostly to the presence of a modulatory transmitter, with examples cited. Nonclassical synaptic functions may be providing revolutionary possibilities for dealing with slow and broadly distributed cerebral functions, manifested electrophysiologically and behaviorally, that have been difficult to analyze successfully in terms restricted to the fast and discretely localized classical synaptic functions.  相似文献

Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus larvae and early juveniles were assigned to one of three developmental stages based on the degree of guanine deposition. The development in terms of the guanine deposition was a function of body size and age and was more strongly associated with the former. The degree of guanine deposition is found to be valid as a criterion to distinguish Japanese anchovies at the end of the metamorphosing stage.  相似文献

The seasonal and bathymetrical distribution of Mesocyclops leuckarti (Claus) was investigated during 1969–1975 Development time of egg, naupliar and copepodite stages were found experimentally at three temperatures (15°, 22° and 27°C). The calculations of population dynamics generated some unexplained results.Experimental study of the influence of light-dark conditions and temperature on the process of laying and hatching, together with the field data, helped us to describe an artifact when sampling is done at early morning.Contribution no. 123. The antagonism between botulinum toxin and calcium in motor nerve terminals   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
The effects of tetraethylammonium and manganese, which modify calcium entry into motor nerve terminals, have been studied during advanced stages of botulinum paralysis. Evidence has been obtained that the voltage-activated calcium current in the nerve endings is not significantly reduced by botulinum toxin. The depression of transmitter release that the toxin produces must arise at a later stage, at an intracellular site of the release mechanism.  相似文献

Summary The complementation pattern of twelve rudimentary mutations has been analyzed at two different levels. When analyzed on the basis of complementation for a wing abnormality the mutations can be divided into three groups, each of which is believed to affect the activity of one of the first three enzymes of pyrimidine synthesis (Norby, 1973; Jarry and Falk, 1974; Rawls and Fristrom, 1975). However, when the mutants are analyzed for complementation on the basis of a second phenotype, pyrimidine auxotrophy, the distinction between two of these three groups is not evident. The disparity in the two patterns probably reflects a different threshold of gene activity required for the detection of an auxotrophic phenotype as compared to that at which a wing abnormality is detectable.The biochemical basis of these results is interpreted in light of recent data suggesting that at least the first two enzymes of pyrimidine synthesis are contained within a single multifunctional protein complex (Soderholm et al., 1975).  相似文献

Carboxymethylated aspartate aminotransferase was digested with a proteinase claimed to be specific for lysine residues. Complete cleavage occurred at 12 of the 19 lysine residues in the protein, but at the remaining seven residues cleavage was either restricted or absent. In addition, cleavage was observed at three of the 26 arginine residues. These results are discussed with reference to the amino acid residues adjacent to points of complete or restricted cleavage. The complete primary structure of aspartate aminotransferase, based on these and other studies, is given. Evidence for the assignment of some acid and amide side chains has been deposited as Supplementary Publication SUP 50050 (11 pp.) at the British Library (Lending Division), Boston Spa, Wetherby, W. Yorkshire LS23 7BQ, U.K., from whom copies can be obtained on the terms indicated in Biochem. J. (1975) 145, 5. Summary Cell lines were isolated from three stages of embryos ofBlattella germanica dissociated with trypsin. The lines have been subcultured 50 to 134 times in 3 years. Line UM-BGE-1 was isolated from germ band embryos at stages of segmentation and limb-bud formation (5 days old). Line UM-BGE-2 was derived from embryos at dorsal closure (7 days old). Line UM-BGE-4 arose from embryos in the germ band and dorsal closure stages (5 and 7 days old); these cells colonize as hollow spheres or vesicles. Line UM-BGE-5, isolated during organogenesis (10 days old), developed into two distinct sublines. Subline α is composed of round cells that do not attach to the flask. Subline β grows as an attached monolayer; the cells can be removed with a saline solution containing 20mM disodium dihydrogen Versenate?. Most of the cells of these lines have the diploid chromosome number (23 or 24) excepting line UM-BGE-1 in which the tetraploid number predominates. Studies have been made of the effect of transmural electrical stimulation on twitch tension produced by atropinized ventricular preparations from tadpoles and adult frogs. In preparations from tadpoles at stage 42 and all the following stages, as well as in adult frogs, transmural electrical stimulation evoked positive inotropic responses which consisted of a slow propranolol-sensitive component or of a slow and fast components. It is highly probable that the slow component is induced by adrenergic transmitter. The fast propranolol-resistant component appears at stage 43. It may be prevented by bretilium being probably induced by a comediator which is released together with the adrenergic transmitter from the sympathetic nerve endings.  相似文献

Adaptation in auditory-nerve fibers: A revised model   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Adaptation of firing rates in auditory-nerve fibers appears to reflect two distinct processes. Rapid adaptation occupies the first few milliseconds of response and is superimposed upon short-term adaptation which has a time constant of about 40 ms. The properties of the two processes are reviewed and compared, and a phenomenological model is developed that successfully accounts for them. The model consists of several stages which have been tentatively associated with underlying physiological processes. In the first stage stimulus intensity is transformed by a static nonlinearity, followed by a low-pass filter. The filtered output may correspond to the hair-cell receptor potential. It modulates the release of a substance that possibly represents synaptic transmitter. Adaptation is produced by the depletion of transmitter which is located in three stores in cascade. A global store with fixed concentration controls the steady-state response and replenishes a local store which is responsible for short-term adaptation. The local store seplenishes a rapidly depleted immediate store. Flow between stores is proportional to concentration gradients with the following exceptions. The immediate store is subdivided into independent volumes or sites and there is no flow among sites or back to the local store. A given site becomes activated only when the receptor potential exceeds its particular activation value and the number of activated sites is proportional to the receptor potential. The flow of transmitter from the immediate store is assumed to be proportional to neural firing rate, with some minor modifications described in the text. The properties of the model are determined from the underlying equations and from a computer simulation. The model produces realistic response properties including PST histograms, onset and steady-state rate-intensity functions, incremental and decremental responses, response modulation for amplitude modulated stimuli, and period histograms for low-frequency tones.  相似文献

Transmitter release sites were located in the motor nerve ending of the frog cutaneous-pectoris muscle using three extracellular electrodes. Transmitter release sites were found to be grouped in a direction cutting across the nerve ending and reflecting transmitter release and active release zones (AZ). Measurements from these groups showed that most transmitter release takes place at the center of the AZ, declining towards the periphery and to either side of this zone. All AZ were found to take place in spontaneous release with a low extracellular concentration of calcium ions present, compared with only a proportion in evoked release. Advantages of the triple as opposed to the dual micro-electrode technique are analyzed. It was found that transmitter release in spatially isolated AZ at the nerve ending leads to a polymodal distribution pattern of the amplitude of uniquantal signals during extracellular recording.
