Phosphatic conical microfossils from Upper Cambrian (Franconian) limestones of the Orr Formation in western Utah are described as Utahphospha sequina n.g., n.sp. The genus is also known from other localities in Utah and Nevada. The fossil has a distinct sequin-like external sculpture which has been formed by outward accretion. A hole at the tip originated by abrasion from within. The fossils are interpreted as hatched cysts of an unknown organism. 相似文献

Tensile studies on cuticle of different chitin fibre architecture indicate that the intimate relationship between physical stiffness and the extent of chemical tanning holds for those cuticles which are mechanically isotropic in their surface planes, but not for those which are mechanically anisotropic. 相似文献

The elytral base sclerites (= sclerites located at the articular region between the forewing and thorax in Coleoptera) of selected taxa were examined and homologized. Although the elytral base sclerites are highly modified compared to the wing base sclerites of the other neopterans, they can be homologized by using the conservative wing flapping and folding lines as landmarks. A reduction of the first axillary sclerite was identified as a general trend of the elytral base sclerites, although the sclerite usually has a very important function to mediate flight power from the notum to the wing. This result indicates that the functional constraint against the basal sclerites is relaxed because of the lack of an ability to produce flight power by elytra. In contrast, the elytral folding system formed by the basal sclerites is well retained, which probably occurs because proper wing folding is a key for the shelter function of the elytra. The elytral base sclerites apparently contain more homoplasies than the serially homologous hindwing base sclerites of Coleoptera, which suggests that the structure is less useful for higher-level systematics. However, the faster evolutionary rate of the elytral base sclerites suggests there is potential for studying the lower-level phylogeny of Coleoptera. 相似文献

The study of multinationality and the study of the absorption of immigrant ethnic minorities in the British Isles have been dealt with academically in terms of two separate problematics. The first has been dealt with in terms of the theory of nationalism, the second in terms of migration and class. This article attempts to bring the two problematics together in terms of a master concept of empires and multinational states. Starting from this standpoint the nature of Welsh, Scottish and Irish nationality and nationalism in Britain are discussed in the first part of the essay and the structure of migration to the metropolis from post‐colonial societies in the second. While the article is based upon an analysis of the British case, however, it is suggested that this type of analysis can be extended to take account of other cases of multinationality and other types of international migration. 相似文献

A new method of three-dimensional (3-D) analysis of sclerotised structures of monogenoids was performed by processing z-series images using 3D-Doctor. Z-series were obtained from Gomori's trichrome-stained specimens of marine and freshwater monogenoids under laser scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy. Measurements obtained from 3-D images were then compared with those from 2-D images taken from both flattened and unflattened specimens. Data comparison demonstrated that 3-D morphometry allowed avoidance of over-estimation due to deformation and the reduction of errors associated with different spatial orientations. Moreover, study of 3-D images permitted observation of morphological details that are not detectable in 2-D representations. 相似文献

The marginal hooks and anchors have been digested from the haptors of the monogeneans Gyrodactylus salaris and Discocotyle sagittata. These structures then can be measured and drawn more accurately than those surrounded by haptoral tissue. The technique also facilitates the study of isolated hooks with SEM. Calcified sclerites are common in many benthic marine invertebrates, and despite their widespread occurrence, little is known about their ecological roles. Previous studies suggested that the sclerite composition of coral colonies may be altered in response to environmental cues such as predation and water motion. Furthermore, larger sclerites are thought to be more effective than small ones in deterring predators, while small sclerites may provide greater stiffness and resistance to deformation. The present study compared the length of the sclerites of the sea pansy Renilla muelleri from three depths in Guanabara Bay in southeastern Brazil. Our results show that sclerites are larger in deep-water specimens than in those from shallow water. Field assays were conducted in which sclerites from sea pansies at three depths were incorporated into artificial foods and offered to a natural assemblage of fish. These assays demonstrate that sclerites from R. muelleri from all three depths significantly reduced consumption by generalist carnivorous fishes. We conclude that R. muelleri uses skeletal elements not only to give the body its form but also as a defense against biotic threats. 相似文献

A high degree of automation of the wingstroke in the Heteroptera has resulted in the simplification of the axillae and associated musculature. The functions of the indirect, asynchronous flight muscles are summarised from previous investigations and original work. Functions are suggested for the tonic muscles but await confirmation by electrophysiological research.
The deformations seen in heteropteran wings can be explained in terms of muscularly generated and aerodynamic forces. Unsteady aerodynamic benefits of such deformations, though unproven, may be of primary importance. Torsion, camber change and transverse flexion are all candidates for the generation of unsteady effects. The 'near clap and peel' seen at pronation has been described in other insects by Ellington (1984a), and it seems likely that it serves the same purpose in Heteroptera.
Heteroptera, like many other insects, show wing-tip flexion. Among several possible functions, inertial stress reduction is shown to be important. 相似文献

The Devonian cemented brachiopod Schuchertellopsis durbutensis has proved difficult to classify and its possible taxonomic relationships are unknown. Morphologically Schuchertellopsis resembles more closely members of the Orthotetidina than the Davidsoniidina. Examination of the shell structure, a key diagnostic feature of the Orthotetidina, shows that Schuchertellopsis has the cross laminar secondary shell typical of all orthotetidines. However, the presence of both pseudopunctate and incipient an extropunctate fabric within the ventral valve is unique amongst orthotetidine brachiopods and is thought to represent a phase of shell fabric experimentation. Schuchertellopsis probably fits most comfortably within the Schuchertellidae, and is the earliest representative of that family. 相似文献

Chlamydial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) agglutinated mouse and rabbit erythrocytes but not human, guinea pig, or pronghorn antelope erythrocytes. Hemagglutination was not specific for Chlamydia spp., as rough LPSs from Coxiella burnetii and Escherichia coli also agglutinated erythrocytes from the same animal species. Nonagglutinated and agglutinated erythrocytes bound equivalent amounts of LPS, indicating that hemagglutination was not due to a specific interaction of chlamydial LPS with erythrocytes. Thus, hemagglutination by chlamydial LPS is not mediated by specific receptor-ligand interactions but is a property of the altered surface of the LPS-coated erythrocytes. 相似文献

Sclerites in the gorgonian coral Briareum asbestinum perform the dual role of skeletal support against wave action and structural defence against predators. Local populations of B. asbestinum vary along gradients of decreasing water movement and decreasing predator abundance with increasing depth, such that sclerite length increases and sclerite density decreases with depth. Based on this pattern, I explored a possible trade-off between the sclerite composition that is most resistant to tearing versus most deterrent to predatory gastropods. Feeding assays revealed that artificial foods containing longer sclerites and those containing higher volume fractions of sclerites are less palatable to the gastropod Cyphoma gibbosum. However, real colonies appear constrained, in that they do not contain both long sclerites and high volume fractions at the same time. Given a choice among real colonies, snails prefer shallow-water colonies with shorter sclerites e ven though the sclerite volume fractions are high. Although least deterrent to snails, shallow-water colonies are 56% more resistant to tearing than their deep-water counterparts. Hence, variation in sclerite composition among local populations of B. asbestinum may be maintained by opposing selection for support versus defense. 相似文献

The gross morphology of soft coral surface sclerites has been studied for taxonomic purposes for over a century. In contrast, sclerites located deep in the core of colonies have not received attention. Some soft coral groups develop massive colonies, in these organisms tissue depth can limit light penetration and circulation of internal fluids affecting the physiology of coral tissues and their symbiotic algae; such conditions have the potential to create contrasting calcifying conditions. To test this idea, we analyzed the crystal structure of sclerites extracted from different colony regions in selected specimens of zooxanthellate and azooxanthellate soft corals with different colony morphologies, these were: Sarcophyton mililatensis, Sinularia capillosa, Sinularia flexibilis, Dendronephthya sp. and Ceeceenus levis. We found that the crystals that constitute polyp sclerites differ from those forming stalk sclerites. We also observed different crystals in sclerites located at various depths in the stalk including signs of sclerite breakdown in the stalk core region. These results indicate different modes of calcification within each colonial organism analyzed and illustrate the complexity of organisms usually regarded as repetitive morphological and functional units. By using immunoblotting with antiserum specific to human plasma apolipoprotein A-IV (apoA-IV), a previously reported polymorphic plasma protein of dogs viz postalbumin-2 (Pa2) and one of horses viz serum protein 2 (SP2), were identified as apoA-IV of these species. This along with earlier published results implied that: (1) both dog and horse show a high degree of polymorphism at the APOA4 locus with three common alleles in each of the two species; and (2) apoA-IV phenotyping in these two species can be done by analysing plasma/serum samples by a simple method of two-dimensional electrophoresis, conducted under non-denaturing conditions, followed by general-protein staining of gels. 相似文献
