Three chironomid midge (Diptera: Chironomidae) species (Cricotopus sylvestris (Fabricius); Psectrocladius limbatellus (Holmgren), Tanytarsus fimbriatus Reiss and Fittkau) live at high densities and dominate the midge assemblage found in slow sand filter beds. After filter beds are drained and cleaned, the substratum consists of sand of different particle sizes, but once beds are refilled and in operation, organic material accumulates on the sand and Cladophora grows. In laboratory experiments, we found that larvae of the three midge species preferred different substratum types: C. sylvestris preferred sand to both Cladophora and organic material, P. limbatellus preferred Cladophora, and Tanytarsus sp. preferred organic material. Some evidence of preference for one particle size was also found, but compared with substratum types, this was neither as marked or contrasting between the three species. The contrasting preferences that we found in the laboratory suggest that the substratum will influence the microdistribution of the three species in filter beds, and provide further evidence of the importance of substratum in midge assemblages.  相似文献

Typhlodromalus manihoti and Typhlodromalus aripo are exotic predators of the cassava green mite Mononychellus tanajoa in Africa. In an earlier paper, we showed that the two predators were attracted to odors from M. tanajoa-infested cassava leaves. In addition to the key prey species, M. tanajoa, two alternative prey mite species, Oligonychus ossypii and Tetranychus urticae also occur in the cassava agroecosystem. Here, we used a Y-tube olfactometer to determine the attraction of the predators to odors from O. gossypii- or T. urticae-infested cassava leaves and their prey-related odor preference. T. aripo but not T. manihoti was slightly attracted to odors from O. gossypii-infested leaves. Both predator species showed a stronger response to odors from cassava leaves infested by M. tanajoa over odors from cassava leaves infested by O. gossypii. Neither predator species was attracted to odors from T. urticae-infested leaves and the predators preferred the odors from M. tanajoa-infested leaves over those from T. urticae-infested leaves. When O. gossypii was present together with M. tanajoa on the same leaves or on different sets of leaves offered together as an odor source the two predators were attracted. In contrast, after mixing non-attractive odors from T. urticae-infested leaves with attractive odors from M. tanajoa-infested leaves, neither T. aripo nor T. manihoti was attracted. Ecological advantages and disadvantages of the predators’ behavior and possible implications for biological control of M. tanajoa are discussed. The herbivore assemblage, intensity of herbivory and factors determining herbivory levels on the mangrove Kandelia obovata (previously K. candel, Rhizophoraceae) were studied over a 13-month period at two forests with contrasting growing conditions in Hong Kong. Mai Po was part of an eutrophic embayment in the Pearl River estuary and generally offered more favourable conditions for mangrove growth, whereas Ting Kok had a rocky substratum and oceanic salinity. Twenty-four insect herbivore species were recorded on K. obovata, with lepidopteran larvae that consume leaf lamina being the dominant species. While leaf litter production was similar at the two forests, herbivory level at Mai Po (mean = 3.9% in terms of leaf area loss) was more severe than that at Ting Kok (mean = 2.3%). Peak herbivory levels were found in summer at both locations (6.5% for Mai Po and 3.8% for Ting Kok). Young leaves of K. obovata at both locations were generally preferred by the herbivores from the period of late spring to summer. Concentrations of most feeding deterrents (ash, crude fibre, and total soluble tannins) were significantly higher in both young and mature leaves at Ting Kok, whereas leaf nutrients (total nitrogen and water) were the same at the two sites. Young leaves at Ting Kok contained about 30% more tannins than their counterparts at Mai Po. Significant differences in leaf chemistry also existed between young and mature leaves at either site. The differences were concomitant with the observed patterns of leaf herbivory on K. obovata, and suggest a potential relationship between environmental quality and plant defence against herbivory.  相似文献

The tubificid Psammoryctides barbatus is common in the sediments of English chalk streams. The species is primarily a spring and summer breeder with the most intense period of reproduction from April to June throughout its distribution in the river. Recruitment of juveniles takes place chiefly from June to August and most of the worms attain maturity in the following spring. In culture at 15 °C worms had attained 38 mm within 90 days of hatching and showed early signs of maturity. Growth rates and rates of cocoon production in culture are presented.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of the tubificid worm Rhyacodrilus hiemalis Ohtaka, the numerically dominant species of oligochaete in the littoral of Lake Biwa, was studied with special reference to seasonal vertical migration in the lake sediment. Monthly collections of lake sediment cores were made using PVC tubes. Core sections of sample sediments ranged from 76 to 117 cm. The vertical distribution of the worms showed no diurnal variation; therefore diel vertical migration was not evident. Seasonal downward migration started in April, and upward migration started in October. From December to March, almost all worms remained in the near-surface sediment layer (surface to 30 cm deep), while from July to September almost all worms remained deeper than 30 cm. However, few individuals migrated deeper than 90 cm. No discontinuous layers were found in grain size composition, water content, loss on ignition, particulate carbon, nitrogen or phosphorus. In deep sediment there was no free oxygen, as evidenced by negative ORP values. For 4 months in summer, R. hiemalis aestivated, probably utilizing anaerobic respiration. It appeared that R. hiemalis moved deeper in the sediment in response to sediment temperature, because sediment temperatures in the deep layers seemed to converge at around 20–21 °C in the summer months. The life history traits of seasonal vertical migration and summer aestivation perhaps arose as an adaptation to the climatic conditions accompanying the geographical origin of R. hiemalis, and they also serve to minimize predation risk during summer when most invertebrate predatory fishes are active.  相似文献

To examine the susceptibility of five Costa Rican tree species to leaf-cutter ants (Atta cephalotes L.: Formicidae, Attini), young and mature leaves from trees that were grown in a plantation under full sun and partial shade were offered to six leaf-cutter colonies located in full sun and six in patial shade. In addition to offering leaf disks to the ants, we offered large pieces of leaves to assess the effect of cutting leaves on food choices. Leaf-cutters responded differently to each plant species, preferring Virola koschyni Warburg (Myristicaceae) and Hyeronima alchorneoides Allemao (Euphorbiaceae) over Stryphnodendrum microstachyum Poeppig & Endlicher (Mimosoideae), Pentaclethra macroloba Willdenow (Fabaceae) and Vochysia ferruginea Martius (Vochysiaceae). In agreement with previous studies, interspecific differences among the tree species in water and saponin content appeared to account for the observed ant preferences among the five tree species: leaf-cutter ants preferred leaves and disks with more water and less saponins and the five tree species varied significantly in these traits. An observed positive correlation between preference and phenolic/nitrogen ratio appears to be spurious, and is instead due to a negative correlation between water content and nitrogen content. For the first time, Atta nest location has been shown to affect consumption: nests located in partial shade removed more leaf material than those from the sun plots. However, nest location had no effect on preference ranking of the tree species tested. Pieces of leaves from all the tree species grown in partial shade were significantly more removed than those trees grown in full sun. Leaf age, toughness, leaf specific weights, ant activity, and colony were not correlated with food choices. Because of the observed preferences, the five tree species should not be considered as equal candidates for plantation purposes. However, complete characterization of the candidate status of tree species for plantations in the neotropics must include information on the ability of such species to tolerate pest attacks in addition to their natural defenses to attack.  相似文献

Specialist herbivores are suggested to be unaffected by or attracted to the defense compounds of their host-plants, and can even prefer higher levels of certain chemicals. Abrostola asclepiadis is a specialist herbivore whose larvae feed on the leaves of Vincetoxicum hirundinaria, which contains toxic alkaloids and is unpalatable to most generalist herbivores. The food choice, leaf consumption and growth of A. asclepiadis larvae were studied to determine whether there is variation among and within host-plant populations in their suitability for this specialist herbivore. There was significant variation in food preference and leaf consumption among host-plant populations, but no differences were found in larval growth and feeding on different host-plant populations. A. asclepiadis larvae preferred host-plant populations with higher alkaloid concentrations, but did not consume more leaf material from plants originating from such populations in a no-choice experiment. There was also some variation in food preference of larvae among host-plant individuals belonging to the same population, suggesting that there was variability in leaf chemistry also within populations. Such variation in larval preference among host-plant genotypes and populations may create potential for coevolutionary dynamics in a spatial mosaic.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the infestation and dispersion patterns of egg predatory nemerteans on their crab hosts were analyzed. Marked differences in the seasonal patterns of infestation were noted between worm species, yet, common patterns in the aggregation of the worms were found. Worm aggregation increased at the onset of the reproductive seasons of the hosts, and at the nadirs of the reproductive seasons for those hosts with year round breeding. The aggregation patterns of two worm species fluctuated with the physical environment of their estuarine hosts. Salinity changes as a result of seasonal rains may have caused changes in the underlying dispersion patterns of Carcinonemertes epialti on Hemiarapsus oregonensis, and C. mitsukurii on Portunus pelagicus. Lastly, the embryogenic cycle of the host species was significant in shaping the infestation and aggregation patterns of C. epialti on Cancer anthonyi and C. regicides on Paralithodes camtschaticus. Worm immigration and emigration were linked to crab embryogenesis and directly influenced the dispersion patterns of the worms.  相似文献

Larvae of Epiphyas postvittana and Planotortrix octo were released onto branches cut from apple trees, and allowed to colonize a range of types of artificial nests. Both species exhibited similar strong preferences for nests comprising leaf-leaf or leaf-fruitlet combinations, followed by nests comprising leaf-plastic leaf, leaf-plastic fruitlet or plastic leaf-fruitlet combinations. Nests involving fresh plant material alone (shoot, fruitlet or leaf alone) were also colonized to a lesser extent, but no larvae were found on nests consisting of plastic leaves or fruitlets alone or in combinations of the two. In another experiment, more E. postvittana larvae colonized nests with leaf and fruitlet combinations, compared to leaf and glass ball, or leaf and treated wax ball combinations, where the wax had been in contact with fresh apples or fruitlets. Choice tests, conducted using larval traps, showed that larvae were caught in traps baited with odors collected and released by wax which had been in contact with mature apples and leaves. Chloroform extracts from apple skin also caught larvae in choice tests. These results suggest that both physical and chemical cues are important to leafroller larval establishment.  相似文献

The attraction of the predatory mites, Typhlodromalus manihoti and Typhlodromalus aripo, to the host plant-spider mite complex, Manihot esculentaMononychellus tanajoa, was investigated with a Y-tube olfactometer. Factors examined included predator starvation period, several combinations of cassava leaf biomass and initial M. tanajoa infestations, M. tanajoa-damaged leaves with mites and/or their residues removed, M. tanajoa alone, and mechanically damaged cassava leaves. We found that females of T. manihoti and T. aripo were significantly attracted to M. tanajoa-infested cassava leaves when the predators were starved for 2, 6, or 10 h. Satiated T. aripo was significantly attracted to infested cassava leaves whereas satiated T. manihoti did not discriminate between infested and non-infested leaves. When a choice was given between either two or four leaves infested with 200 female M. tanajoa and an equivalent number of non-infested leaves, 2 h-starved T. manihoti and T. aripo were significantly attracted to each of the infested groups of cassava leaves. At a density of 12 female M. tanajoa per leaf on four leaves, 2 h-starved T. manihoti was still attracted to M. tanajoa-infested leaves whereas 2 h-starved T. aripo was not attracted. When a choice was given between non-infested cassava leaves and either infested leaves from which only M. tanajoa females had been removed, or infested leaves from which all M. tanajoa and their visible products (web, feces) had been wiped off, T. aripo preferred odors from both types of previously infested leaves. Typhlodromalus manihoti was only attracted to infested leaves from which the M. tanajoa females only had been removed. Finally, the two predators were not attracted to 400 female M. tanajoa on clean cotton wool or to mechanically wounded leaves. This supports the hypothesis that M. tanajoa damage induces volatile cues in cassava leaves that attract T. manihoti and T. aripo to M. tanajoa-infested leaves.  相似文献

Morphological, anatomical, biochemical and physiological traits of sun and shade leaves of adult Quercus ilex, Phillyrea latifolia and Pistacia lentiscus shrub species co-occurring in the Mediterranean maquis at Castelporziano (Latium) were studied. Fully expanded sun leaves had 47% (mean of the three species) greater leaf mass area (LMA) and 31% lower specific leaf area (SLA) than shade leaves. Palisade parenchyma thickness contributed on an average 42% to the total leaf thickness, spongy layer 43%, upper epidermal cells 5%, and upper cuticle thickness 3%. Stomatal size was greater in sun (25.5 μm) than in shade leaves (23.6 μm). Total chlorophyll content per fresh mass was 71% greater in shade than in sun leaves, and nitrogen content was the highest in sun (13.7 mg g−1) than in shade leaves (11.8 mg g−1). Difference of net photosynthetic rates (P N) between sun and shade leaves was 97% (mean of the three species). The plasticity index (sensu Valladares et al., New Phytol 148:79–91, 2000a) was the highest for physiological leaf traits (0.86) than for morphological, anatomical and biochemical ones. Q. ilex had the highest plasticity index of morphological, anatomical and physiological leaf traits (0.37, 0.28 and 0.71, respectively) that might explain its wider ecological distribution. The higher leaf plasticity of Q. ilex might be advantageous in response to varying environmental conditions, including global change.  相似文献

The purple globe crab, Randallia ornata (Randall, 1839) (Decapoda: Leucosiidae) is a common crustacean found on sandy beaches from Northern California to Baja California, Mexico. An undescribed species of Carcinonemertes, which shares biological features with a partially described worm from Tasmania was recovered from R. ornata. The worm reaches 10 mm in length and secretes a sturdy tube with a distinctive spiral shape. The total prevalence of the worm on R. ornatawas 70% (85% for ovigerous female crabs, 67% for post-ovigerous female crabs, and 45% for male crabs). Intensities reached 32 worms per crab. Adult worms were found in crab egg masses, regressed adults were recovered from under the abdomen of post-ovigerous females, and encysted juveniles were found on the gill lamellae of non-ovigerous female crabs and occasionally from the gill lamellae of male crabs.  相似文献

An important component of the interaction between macroinvertebrates and leaf litter in streams in the extent to which consumers can differentiate between undecomposed and decomposing leaves. The detritivores Gammarus pulex and Asellus aquaticus fed preferentially on conditioned rather on unconditioned leaf material. Growth in A. aquaticus was significantly reduced when unconditioned leaves were provided, but in G. pulex no significant effect of conditioning on growth was observed. The capacity of G. pulex to tolerate reductions in food quality seems to be a consequence of a compensatory system in which respiration rates change to compensate for reductions in food quality. In this way a constant growth rate is maintained. Increases in ingestion rates to compensate for low quality food were not observed.  相似文献

  • 1 Larvae of the caddisfly Anisocentropus kirramus are common leaf shredders in rainforest streams in tropical Queensland. Laboratory experiments were undertaken to examine the effects of (a) differences in leaf species, age and degree of conditioning, (b) leaf preferences, (c) temperature and (d) larval stage on processing of leaf litter by A. kirramus.
  • 2 Leaf species (five tested), age (fresh v senescent) and condition (conditioned in stream v unconditioned) each had a significant effect on the amount of leaf material that was processed. For most species, conditioned leaves were processed faster but for one species unconditioned leaves were processed faster. Senescent leaves were processed more rapidly than green leaves in three species but not in the other two. Given a choice of leaf types A. kirramus actively selected leaves that were processed faster; no preference was shown between two different ‘fast’ leaves.
  • 3 Processing occurred at all temperatures tested (10, 18 and 25°C), with the processing rate increasing with temperature. Younger instar larvae processed leaves at a greater rate per unit body weight (up to 343% day?1) than older instars. Final instar (5) larvae were capable of processing some tough leaves that younger instars did not process.
  • 4 In rainforest streams, processing of leaves by A. kirramus takes place throughout the year. Its ability to process green leaves is important because of the high input of fresh green leaves into tropical streams, and because of the severe depletion of the supply of conditioned leaves and fine detritus after floods.

Fourteen tubificid species and one lumbriculid make up the oligochaete population of the northern half of Lake Constance, a meso- to mesoeutrophic lake. Tubifex tubifex makes up 72% of the total abundance, the clean water species Stylodrilus heringianus only 0.1%. No correlation exists between total worm abundance and organic carbon content of the sediment, only 4% of the organic carbon being used by the worms. A highly significant correlation between particulate organic matter loading and its organic carbon content from 10 tributaries and total oligochaete abundance is demonstrated. The ecological index IPA is defined and used to assess the biologically relevant trophic status of the lake bed. This integrates information on the percent representation of three groups of worm species classified on atrophic basis and total abundance of the worms. Despite control of the increase in phosphorus loadings progressive eutrophication of sediments was observed after an 8 year interval.  相似文献

In order to better understand the maintenance of a fairly narrow diet breadth in monarch butterfly larvae, Danaus plexippus L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Danainae), we measured feeding preference and survival on host and non-host plant species, and sensitivity to host and non-host plant chemicals. For the plant species tested, a hierarchy of feeding preferences was observed; only plants from the Asclepiadaceae were more or equally preferred to Asclepias curassavica, the common control. The feeding preferences among plant species within the Asclepiadaceae are similar to published mean cardenolide concentrations. However, since cardenolide data were not collected from individual plants tested, definitive conclusions regarding cardenolide concentrations and plant acceptability cannot be made. Although several non-Asclepiadaceae were eaten in small quantities, all were less preferred to A. curassavica. Additionally, these non-Asclepiadaceae do not support continued feeding, development, and survival of first and fifth-instar larvae. Preference for a host versus a non-host (A. curassavica versus Vinca rosea) increased for A. curassavica reared larvae as compared to diet-reared larvae suggesting plasticity in larval food preferences. Furthermore, host species were significantly preferred over non-host plant species in bioassays using a host plant or sucrose as a common control. Larval responses to pure chemicals were examined in order to determine if host and non-host chemicals stimulate or deter feeding in monarch larvae. We found that larvae were stimulated to feed by some ubiquitous plant chemicals, such as sucrose, inositol, and rutin. In contrast, several non-host plant chemicals deterred feeding: caffeine, apocynin, gossypol, tomatine, atropine, quercitrin, and sinigrin. Additionally the cardenolides digitoxin and ouabain, which are not in milkweed plants, were neutral in their influence on feeding. Another non-milkweed cardenolide, cymarin, significantly deterred feeding. Extracts of A. curassavica leaves were tested in bioassays to determine which components of the leaf stimulate feeding. Both an ethanol extract of whole leaves and a hexane leaf-surface extract are phagostimulatory, suggesting the involvement of both polar and non-polar plant compounds. These data suggest that the host range of D. plexippus larvae is maintained by both feeding stimulatory and deterrent chemicals in host and non-host plants.  相似文献

Foraging behaviour of the predatorChilocorus nigritus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) at the three spatial levels of biotope, prey patch and individual prey, was studied in the laboratory, and related to behaviour in the field. Vertically oriented parallel lines were more attractive than the same shapes in a horizontal position. A simulated horizon with a tree line was preferred to a simulated flat horizon. They were attracted to a tree image for the first 2 h of exposure, but were less attracted after longer exposure, possibly due to habituation. Leaf shape was recognised, and simple ovate leaves were preferred to compound bipinnate leaves and to squares. These responses were associated with biotope selection for feeding and aggregation at aestivation sites. The location of prey patches by adults involved prey odour but the location of such sites by larvae did not. Adults detected individual prey visually and olfactorily over short distances but physical contact with prey was required for detection by larvae. Location of individual prey and prey patches by adults and larvae was facilitated by alternation between intensive and extensive search. The differences in the ability of larvae and adults to locate prey, stem from the adults being the active locators of biotope and patch, whereas the comparatively immobile larvae depend on their parents’ ability for long-range location of prey. Two hypotheses concerning coccinellid foraging behaviour are proposed. Firstly, the duration of response to a visual cue is related to the distance over which such a cue may be perceived. It follows that habituation to closer range cues occurs more rapidly than to longer range cues. Secondly, visual cues used by adults at the different spatial levels of prey location, and the location of mates and aggregation sites, have the same or similar shape. These results also provide guidelines for orchard management to maximise the biocontrol value of this species.  相似文献

The particle size distribution of faecal pellets produced by the tubificid worm Tubifex tubifex in laboratory culture, was measured with a Coulter® Multisizer. The faecal material from worms cultured in a range of sediments was composed of particles with a mean diameter of less than 63 m, and only a few isolated larger particles were found by microscopic analysis. This suggests that this species actively selects the silt-clay fraction, avoiding larger sand particles. A more detailed analysis of faeces revealed that about 75%, by volume, was composed of particles with a mean diameter < 25m, and the mode was < 10m. T. tubifex fed selectively on the organic rich particles of the sediment, and this feeding was independent of particle size. Measurement of the organic content of faeces (measured as % loss on ignition) showed that they had a consistently higher organic content than the sediment, considered as whole sediments or the <63 m sieved fraction. On the basis of these results, we hypothesise that this species exhibits two levels of selectivity in its feeding behaviour. Thus selection is primarily based on particle size, avoiding the ingestion of sand particles and also, on the preferential selection of particles associated with organic material, within the fine (silt-clay) fraction of the sediment.  相似文献

An outbreak of the nemertean, Carcinonemertes epialti, was observed on Hemigrapsus oregonensis during October, 1982 at Campbell Cove, Bodega Harbor, California. Mean worm intensity (296 worms/crab) was the highest recorded for this nemertean egg predator on H. oregonensis. During the outbreak, male crabs were found to harbor more worms than both non-ovigerous and ovigerous females. Crab egg mortality was substantial; 83% of the ovigerous females experienced 75–100% brood mortality. The seasonal peak in worm abundance coincided with the seasonal low in crab reproduction at this locality. A method for estimating the impact of C. epialti on H. oregonensis natality was developed using crab size and fecundity, and worm prevalence and intensity. For a non-outbreak sampling period, a mean of 5.6% egg mortality was experienced by infested crabs for the period selected. Thus, brood mortality during the outbreak was much greater than that experienced at non-outbreak periods. Heavy fishing pressure on some commercially important crab species has been suggested as a possible factor inducing worm outbreaks and facilitating their continued persistence. These observations suggest that fisheries are not necessarily responsible for the outbreaks of nemerteans on commercially important crab species. However, fishing pressure may still be a sufficient condition to promote nemertean outbreaks.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of coal dust on four, sympatric, wetland tree species in Richards Bay Harbour were investigated. We tested the hypothesis that leaf micromorphology influenced dust accumulation and that coal dust occluded stomata and reduced photosynthetic performance of three mangroves, Avicennia marina, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and Rhizophora mucronata, and a mangrove associate, Hibiscus tiliaceus. To investigate leaf micromorphology, leaf blade material of the four species was prepared following standard procedures and viewed under scanning electron microscopy. Gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were made at saturating light (>1000 μmol m−2 s−1) and high temperature (>25 °C) on leaves that were either covered or uncovered with coal dust. There was no evidence of occlusion of stomata by dust. Dust accumulation in A. marina and H. tiliaceus was exacerbated by the presence of a dense mat of trichomes on the undersurface of the leaves, as well as by the sticky brine secreted by salt glands in the former species.Coal dust significantly reduced CO2 exchange, Photosystem II (PS II) quantum yield and electron transport rate (ETR) through PS II in A. marina and H. tiliaceus but not in the other two mangroves. Reduction in photosynthetic performance was attributed to reduction in light energy incident on the photosynthetic tissues.  相似文献
