This study was designed to assess the nonlinear dynamics of heart rate variability (HRV) during exposure to low-intensity EMFs. Twenty-six healthy young volunteers were subjected to a rest-to-stand protocol to evaluate autonomic nervous system in quiet condition (rest, vagal prevalence) and after a sympathetic activation (stand). The procedure was conducted twice in a double-blind design: once with a genuine EMFs exposure (GSM cellular phone at 900 MHz, 2 W) and once with a sham exposure (at least 24 h apart). During each session, three-lead electrocardiograms were recorded and RR series extracted off-line. The RR series were analyzed by nonlinear deterministic techniques in every phase of the protocol and during the different exposures. The analysis of the data shows there was no statistically significant effect due to GSM exposure on the nonlinear dynamics of HRV.  相似文献

Results of studies on the possible effects of electromagnetic fields emitted by mobile phones on cognitive functions are contradictory, therefore, possible effects of long‐term (7 h 15 min) electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure to handset‐like signals of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) 900 and Wideband Code‐Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) on attention and working memory were studied. The sample comprised 30 healthy male subjects (mean ± SD: 25.3 ± 2.6 years), who were tested on nine study days in which they were exposed to three exposure conditions (sham, GSM 900 and WCDMA) in a randomly assigned and balanced order. All tests were presented twice (morning and afternoon) on each study day within a fixed timeframe. Univariate comparisons revealed significant changes when subjects were exposed to GSM 900 compared to sham, only in the vigilance test. In the WCDMA exposure condition, one parameter in the vigilance and one in the test on divided attention were altered compared to sham. Performance in the selective attention test and the n‐back task was not affected by GSM 900 or WCDMA exposure. Time‐of‐day effects were evident for the tests on divided and selective attention, as well as for working memory. After correction for multiple testing, only time‐of‐day effects remained significant in two tests, resulting in faster reactions in the afternoon trials. The results of the present study do not provide any evidence of an EMF effect on human cognition, but they underline the necessity to control for time of day. Many cellular phone provocation studies have been conducted since the question of increased health risk from extended usage of cellular phones became a social issue. Internationally, most studies have been conducted regarding the effects of GSM cellular phones on blood pressure and heart rate of adult volunteers. On the other hand, very few provocation studies have been conducted regarding the physiological effects of CDMA phones on teenagers. In this study, two volunteer groups consisting of 21 teenagers and 21 adults were exposed to 300 mW of radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic field emitted by a CDMA cellular phone for half an hour. Physiological parameters such as systolic and diastolic blood pressures, heart rate, respiration rate, and skin resistance were simultaneously measured. All the parameters for both groups were unaffected during the exposure except for decreased skin resistance of the teenager group (P < .0001). For the regrouped 23 male and 19 female subjects, all the parameters for both groups were unaffected during the exposure except for decreased skin resistance of the male subjects (P = .0026). Those resistances at 10 min after the terminated exposure returned to the resistances at rest regardless of the different groups of age and sex.  相似文献

The aim of this study was a dosimetrical analysis of the setup used in the exposure of the heads of domestic pigs to GSM-modulated radio frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) at 900 MHz. The heads of pigs were irradiated with a half wave dipole using three different exposure routines; short bursts of 1-3 s at two different exposure levels and a continuous 10-min exposure. The electroencephalogram (EEG) was registered continuously during the exposures to search for RF-EMF originated changes. The dosimetry was based on simulations with the anatomical heterogeneous numerical model of the pig head. The simulation results were validated by experimental measurements with the exposure dipole and a homogeneous liquid phantom resembling the pig head. The specific absorption rate (SAR), defined as a maximum average over 10 g tissue mass (SAR(10g)), was 7.3 W/kg for the first set of short bursts and 31 W/kg for the second set of short bursts. The SAR(10g) in the continuous 10-min exposure was 31 W/kg. The estimated uncertainty for the dosimetry was +/-25% (K = 2).  相似文献

This study reports the continuous 8-h monitoring of data on extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) relating to 14 children and 35 teachers in 11 elementary schools in Northern Taiwan. It was anticipated that the subjects in two of these campuses would have elevated exposure to ELF-MF as a result of their close proximity to high-voltage (161 kilo-Volt, kV) power lines. The results of our analysis reveal that in those schools with high-voltage power lines running through the campuses, the mean ELF-MF exposure level (0.38 +/- 0.51 micro-Tesla (microT), or 0.15, 0.25 and 0.44 microT at the respective 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles) was higher than the mean ELF-MF exposure level for campuses situated far away from such high-voltage power lines (0.14 +/- 0.27 microT, or 0.04, 0.06 and 0.10 microT at the respective 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles). The multi-level analytical technique, which takes individual measurements as the analytical unit, and which also takes into consideration the inter-correlation between measurements from the same individual and/or campus, was also applied to the analysis of the data. We conclude that individual-level and school-level clustering of the measurements, both of which were discernible in this study, should be taken into consideration in any future analysis of data obtained from the continuous monitoring of exposure to ELF-MF.  相似文献

Here we demonstrated the potential and applicability of terahertz (THz) spectroscopy to detect four commonly found bacteria in the infectious diseases. Besides the different spectral characteristics between bacterial species, THz absorption differences for living bacteria, dead bacteria and bacterial powder of the same species were also investigated. Our results revealed that small differences in water contents between bacterial cells account for distinct discrepancies of the absorption coefficients, which can be used for bacterial species identification. Furthermore, living and dead bacteria showed different absorption coefficients as a result of their different hydration levels, suggesting that THz spectroscopy can be used to rapidly assess the living state of bacteria under test. Our results clearly demonstrated the ability of THz spectroscopy for time‐saving and label‐free detection of bacteria with minimal sample preparation, potentially to be utilized for point‐of‐care tests in the near future.

The mechanism of human ether-à-go-go-related gene (HERG) K+ channel blockade by the antifungal agent ketoconazole was investigated using patch-clamp recording from mammalian cell lines. Ketoconazole inhibited whole-cell HERG current (IHERG) with a clinically relevant half-maximal inhibitory drug concentration (IC50) value of 1.7 microM. The voltage- and time-dependent characteristics of IHERG blockade by ketoconazole indicated dependence of block on channel gating, ruling out a significant role for closed-state channel inhibition. The S6 HERG mutations Y652A and F656A produced approximately 4-fold and approximately 21-fold increases in IC50 for IHERG blockade, respectively. Thus, ketoconazole accesses the HERG channel pore-cavity on channel gating, and the S6 residue F656 is an important determinant of ketoconazole binding.  相似文献
