Abstract. Stomatal conductance and needle water potential of P. radiata clones were measured after 2, 5 and 8 months on plants grown in controlled environment rooms with markedly different water vapour saturation deficits (D). Conductance was significantly lower at high D, but water potential differences between treatments were not significant. When trees were moved between treatments most of the changes in conductances occurred within 2 h, with residual changes after 24 h. Water potentials were not different 24 h after the trees were moved. The effects were completely reversible.
Transpiration rates of individual trees were highest in the high D treatment and lowest in the low D treatment. They were not linearly related to D because of decreasing conductance with increasing D.
Height growth, diameter growth and foliage areas were not significantly different between treatments. Tracheid lumen diameters tended to be larger in trees grown at higher D although treatment differences were not significant.
There were significant clonal differences in shoot conductance and tracheid dimensions.  相似文献

Abstract Seedlings of Pinus radiata, 10–20 weeks old and hitherto fully watered, responded rapidly when water was withheld. Wilting occurred 9d later, at which time soil matric water potential at dawn (Ψm) was –1.06MPa and shoot water potential (Ψ) was –1.9 MPa. Small reductions in Ψm elicited large responses in assimilation rate (A) and leaf conductance to water vapour (g). Seedlings appear to be more sensitive to small water deficits than are older Plants of P. radiata. After rewatering, significant increases of A and g occurred within one day, but neither regained the values measured prior to the imposition of a single drying cycle. This residual effect of drought on A, after one or six drying cycles, was partially caused by a decrease in photosynthetic capacity. In plants wilted for the first time, the concentration of abscisic acid (ABA) in the bulk foliage increased 3.4 times as Ψ decreased to –1.77 MPa. In comparison, pretreatment with six drying cycles significantly reduced Ψ to –2.13 MPa (indicating some osmotic adjustment) and induced only a doubling of ABA concentration. However, these differences in Ψ and ABA concentration did not Persist after the plants of all pretreatments had been watered for 7 d, although g of drought-pretreatment Plants remained approximately half that of continuously-watered plants.  相似文献

Behavior of Corn and Sorghum under Water Stress and during Recovery   总被引:10,自引:9,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
Corn (Zea mays L.) and sorghum (Sorghum vulgare, Pers.) plants were grown in a vermiculite-gravel mixture in controlled environment chambers until they were 40 days old. Water was withheld until they were severely wilted, and they were then rewatered. During drying and after rewatering stomatal resistance was measured with a diffusion porometer each morning, and water saturation deficit and water potential were measured on leaf samples. The average resistance of the lower epidermis of well watered plants was lower for corn than for sorghum. When water stress developed, the stomata began to close at a higher water potential in corn than in sorghum. The stomata of both species began to reopen normally soon after the wilted plants were rewatered, and on the 2nd day the leaf resistances were nearly as low as those of the controls. The average leaf water potential of well watered corn was −4.5 bars; that of sorghum, −6.4 bars. The lowest leaf water potential in stressed corn was −12.8 bars at a water saturation deficit of 45%. The lowest leaf water potential in stressed sorghum was −15.7 bars, but the water saturation deficit was only 29%. At these values the leaves of both species were tightly rolled or folded and some injury was apparent. Thus, although the average leaf resistance of corn is little lower than that of sorghum, corn loses much more of its water before the stomata are fully closed than does sorghum. The smaller reduction in water content of sorghum for a given reduction in leaf water potential is characteristic of drought-resistant species.  相似文献

Few studies have investigated the response of perennial legumes to drought stress (DS) and their ability, following rewatering, to regrow and restore photosynthetic activity. We examined these responses for two genotypes of drought‐tolerant tedera (Bituminaria bituminosa var. albomarginata) and one genotype of lucerne (Medicago sativa). Plants were grown outdoors in 1‐m deep PVC pots with a reconstructed field soil profile, regularly watered for 8 months (winter to mid‐summer), and then moved to a glasshouse where either watering was maintained or drought was imposed for up to 47 days, before rewatering for 28 days. Drought stress greatly decreased shoot dry matter (DM) production in both species. Lucerne plants showed severe leaf desiccation after 21 days of withholding water. Relative leaf water content (RWC = 42%) and midday leaf water potential (LWP = ?6.5 MPa) decreased in tedera in response to DS, whereas leaf angle (85°) and lateral root DM both increased. Proline and pinitol accumulated in tedera leaves during DS, and their concentration declined after rewatering. Nine days after rewatering, previously drought‐stressed tedera had similar RWC and LWP to well‐watered control plants. In tedera and lucerne, 28 days after rewatering, photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were greater than in the well‐watered controls. The lateral root DM for one tedera genotype decreased during the recovery phase but for lucerne, the lateral root DM did not change during either the drought or the recovery phases. Overall, the root systems in tedera showed greater plasticity in response to DS and rewatering than in lucerne. In conclusion, tedera and lucerne showed different physiological and morphological strategies to survive and recover from DS. Proline and soluble sugars may act as a carbon source for regrowth in tedera during recovery. In comparison with lucerne, tedera's more rapid recovery after rewatering should contribute to a greater aboveground DM yield under alternating dry and wet periods. Tedera genotypes are highly heterogeneous and selecting genotypes with enhanced concentrations of pinitol and proline could be a valuable tool to improve plant performance during DS and recovery.  相似文献

The capability to withstand and to recover from severe summer droughts is becoming an important issue for tree species in central Europe, as dry periods are predicted to occur more frequently over the coming decades. Changes in leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence and leaf compounds related to photoprotection were analysed in young Quercus pubescens trees under field conditions during two summers (2004 and 2005) of progressive drought and subsequent rewatering. Photochemistry was reversibly down-regulated and dissipation of excess energy was enhanced during the stress phase, while contents of leaf pigments and antioxidants were almost unaltered. Plant water status was restored immediately after rewatering. Net photosynthesis (P(n)) measured at ambient CO2 recovered from inhibition by drought within 4 wk. P(n) measured at elevated CO2--to overcome stomatal limitations--was restored after a few days. A network of photoprotective mechanisms acted in preserving the potential functionality of the photosynthetic apparatus during severe drought, leading to a rapid recovery of photosynthetic activity after rewatering. Thus, Q. pubescens seems to be capable of withstanding and surviving extreme drought events.  相似文献

Summary The effect of cold soils on stem sap flow, shoot gas exchange and water potential of Picea engelmannii (Parry) was investigated during the snowmelt period in the Medicine Bow Mountains, Wyoming, USA. Shoot net photosynthetic rates were higher in young trees (1.5–1.8 m in height) growing in cold soils (<3.5° C) associated with snowpack, than trees in warm soils until about 1500 h. Higher shoot photosynthetic rates of trees in cold soils continued after snow was removed and could not be completely explained by higher visible irradiance over highly reflective snow. Following soil warming higher photosynthetic rates were evident in these trees for five days. High nutrient availability associated with snowmelt may improve shoot nutrient status leading to higher gas-exchange rates during snowmelt. Shoot conductance to water vapor was higher in trees in cold soil until midday, when declining shoot conductance led to lower intercellular CO2 concentrations. Midday through afternoon shoot water potentials of trees in cold soils were similar or higher than those of trees in warm soils and the lower afternoon shoot conductances in cold soils were not the result of lower bulk shoot water potentials. Decline in net photosynthesis of trees in cold soils at 1500 h paralleled increases in intercellular CO2 concentrations, implying a nonstomatal limitation of photosynthesis. This scenario occurred consistently in mid-afternoon following higher morning and midday photosynthesis in cold soils, suggesting a carbohydrate feedback inhibition of photosynthesis. Diurnal patterns in stem sap flow of all trees (cold and warm soils) reflected patterns of shoot conductance, although changes in stem sap flow lagged 1–3 h behind shoot conductance apparently due to stem water storage. Total daily stem sap flow was similar in trees in cold and warm soils, although diel patterns differed. The morning surge and night-time drop in sap flow commenced 1–2 h earlier in trees in cold soils. Overnight stem sap flow was lower in trees in cold soils, possibly due to higher resistance to root water uptake in cold soils, which may explain lower predawn shoot water potentials. However, midday shoot water potentials of trees in cold soils equalled or exceeded those of trees in warm soils. Higher resistance to root water uptake in P. engelmannii in cold soils was apparently overshadowed by transpirational forces and significant shoot water deficits did not develop.  相似文献

The nature of the interaction between drought and elevated CO2 partial pressure (pCa) is critically important for the effects of global change on crops. Some crop models assume that the relative responses of transpiration and photosynthesis to soil water deficit are unaltered by elevated pCa, while others predict decreased sensitivity to drought at elevated pCa. These assumptions were tested by measuring canopy photosynthesis and transpiration in spring wheat (cv. Minaret) stands grown in boxes with 100 L rooting volume. Plants were grown under controlled environments with constant light (300 µmol m?2 s?1) at ambient (36 Pa) or elevated (68 Pa) pCa and were well watered throughout growth or had a controlled decline in soil water starting at ear emergence. Drought decreased final aboveground biomass (?15%) and grain yield (?19%) while elevated pCa increased biomass (+24%) and grain yield (+29%) and there was no significant interaction. Elevated pCa increased canopy photosynthesis by 15% on average for both water regimes and increased dark respiration per unit ground area in well‐watered plants, but not drought‐grown ones. Canopy transpiration and photosynthesis were decreased in drought‐grown plants relative to well‐watered plants after about 20–25 days from the start of the drought. Elevated pCa decreased transpiration only slightly during drought, but canopy photosynthesis continued to be stimulated so that net growth per unit water transpired increased by 21%. The effect of drought on canopy photosynthesis was not the consequence of a loss of photosynthetic capacity initially, as photosynthesis continued to be stimulated proportionately by a fixed increase in irradiance. Drought began to decrease canopy transpiration below a relative plant‐available soil water content of 0.6 and canopy photosynthesis and growth below 0.4. The shape of these responses were unaffected by pCa, supporting the simple assumption used in some models that they are independent of pCa.  相似文献

One-year-old plants of the CAM leaf succulent Agave vilmoriniana Berger were grown outdoors at Riverside, California. Potted plants were acclimated to CO2-enrichment (about 750 microliters per liter) by growth for 2 weeks in an open-top polyethylene chamber. Control plants were grown nearby where the ambient CO2 concentration was about 370 microliters per liter. When the plants were well watered, CO2-induced differences in stomatal conductances and CO2 assimilation rates over the entire 24-hour period were not large. There was a large nocturnal acidification in both CO2 treatments and insignificant differences in leaf chlorophyll content. Well watered plants maintained water potentials of −0.3 to −0.4 megapascals. When other plants were allowed to dry to water potentials of −1.2 to −1.7 megapascals, stomatal conductances and CO2 uptake rates were reduced in magnitude, with the biggest difference in Phase IV photosynthesis. The minor nocturnal response to CO2 by this species is interpreted to indicate saturated, or nearly saturated, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activity at current atmospheric CO2 concentrations. CO2-enhanced diurnal activity of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase activity remains a possibility.  相似文献

Four-month old seedlings of pecan [Carya illinoensis (Wangenh) C. Koch] were either not flooded or flooded for 14 days, then transferred to well-drained conditions for 23 days. Water was withheld from one-half of the trees for 6 days, then trees were rewatered, and water was withheld from all trees. Leaf expansion, leaf dry weight, and the number of new leaves that developed were reduced by flooding, but not trunk or root dry weights. Evapotranspiration rates of flooded trees after transfer to well-drained conditions were initially higher than those of unflooded trees, but decreased to rates of control trees after 12 days. Flooding had no effect on photosynthesis after trees had been transferred to well-drained conditions for 23 days. Drought-stressed trees with leaf water potentials as low as − 1.93 MPa had lower leaf photosynthetic CO2 assimilation rate (A), transpiration (E), and leaf conductance to CO2 (gL) as compared to wellwatered trees. Leaf internal CO2 concentration (ci) was reduced only by the most severe water-stress treatment. Water use rates and relative water content were lower at the permanent wilting point during a second drought stress when trees had been exposed previously to drought stress.  相似文献

Two species of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus macrorhyncha and Eucalyptus rossii) were grown for 8 weeks in either ambient (350 [mu]L L-1) or elevated (700 [mu]L L-1) CO2 concentrations, either well watered or without water additions, and subjected to a daily, 3-h high-temperature (45[deg]C, maximum) and high-light (1250 [mu]mol photons m-2 s-1, maximum) stress period. Water-stressed seedlings of E. macrorhyncha had higher leaf water potentials when grown in elevated [CO2]. Growth analysis indicated that increased [CO2] may allow eucalyptus species to perform better during conditions of low soil moisture. A down-regulation of photosynthetic capacity was observed for seedlings grown in elevated [CO2] when well watered but not when water stressed. Well-watered seedlings grown in elevated [CO2] had lower quantum efficiencies as measured by chlorophyll fluorescence (the ratio of variable to maximal chlorophyll fluorescence [Fv/Fm]) than seedlings grown in ambient [CO2] during the high-temperature stress period. However, no significant differences in Fv/Fm were observed between CO2 treatments when water was withheld. The reductions in dark-adapted Fv/Fm for plants grown in elevated [CO2] were not well correlated with increased xanthophyll cycle photoprotection. However, reductions in the Fv/Fm were correlated with increased levels of nonstructural carbohydrates. The reduction in quantum efficiencies for plants grown in elevated [CO2] is discussed in the context of feedback inhibition of electron transport associated with starch accumulation and variation in sink strength.  相似文献

Aerosols are an ubiquitous component of the atmospheric environment of plants but their ecophysiological role is largely unknown. Here we address this role by comparing the water relations of plants grown in ventilated greenhouses with ambient air (AA), and filtered air (FA) where particle concentrations had been reduced by more than 99%. Beans and sunflowers were grown in well watered soil or hydroponics. Humidity response curves of gas exchange were recorded along with sap flow, water potentials, and osmotic potentials.Hydroponically grown FA sunflowers and FA beans showed 20–40% lower stomatal conductance and lower transpiration compared to the respective AA plants under identical conditions. In sap flow measurements, the leaf-area related transpiration of soil-grown FA sunflowers was about 20–30% lower than for AA plants, partially due to lower night time values. Midday water potentials as well as osmotic potentials of FA plants were higher compared to the respective AA plants, while pre-dawn water potentials did not differ.Reduced transpiration of FA plants with stable photosynthesis was observed for beans and can be explained by the “hydraulic activation of stomata”, where deposited hygroscopic aerosols form liquid water connections along the stomatal walls, thereby forming a second, liquid-water type of stomatal transpiration. Simultaneously decreased transpiration and photosynthesis were observed for sunflower and point to a smaller stomatal aperture of FA plants. To our knowledge, this is the first study allocating an important functional role to natural aerosol concentrations. It further supports the idea that particulate air pollution may decrease the water use efficiency and the drought tolerance of plants.  相似文献

Plant water deficits reduced the basipetal transport of auxin in cotyledonary petiole sections taken from cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) seedings. A pulse-labeling technique was employed to eliminate complications of uptake or exit of 14C-indoleacetic acid from the tissue. The transport capacity or the relative amount of radioactivity in a 30-minute pulse which was basipetally translocated was approximately 30% per hour in petioles excised from well watered seedlings (plant water potentials of approximately -4 to -8 bars). No cotyledonary leaf abscission took place in well watered seedlings. Plant water potentials from -8 to -12 bars reduced the transport capacity from 30 to 15% per hour, and although the leaves were wilted, cotyledonary abscission did not increase appreciably at these levels of stress. The threshold water potential sufficient to induce leaf abscission was approximately -13 bars and abscission increased with increasing stress while the auxin transport capacity of the petioles remained relatively constant (15% per hour). The basipetal transport capacity of well watered petioles tested under anaerobic conditions and acropetal transport tested under all conditions were typically less than basipetal transport under the most severe stress conditions. Cotyledonary abscission took place during and 24 hours after relief of stress with little or no abscission taking place 48 hours after relief of stress. Although the water potential returned to -4 bars within hours after rewatering the stressed plants, partial recovery of the basipetal transport capacity of the petioles was not apparent until 48 hours after rewatering, and at least 72 hours was required to return the transport capacity to near normal values. These data support the view that decreased levels of auxin reaching the abscission zone from the leaf blade influence the abscission process and further suggest that the length of time that the auxin supply is maximally reduced is more critical than the degree of reduction.  相似文献

Photosynthesis was studied in sunflower plants subjected to 1 to 2 days of desiccation and then permitted to recover. The leaf water potential to which leaves returned after rewatering was dependent on the severity of desiccation and the evaporative conditions. Under moderately evaporative conditions, leaf water potential returned to predesiccation levels after 3 to 5 hours when desiccation was slight. Leaf water potentials remained below predesiccation levels for several days after rewatering when leaf water potentials decreased to −13 to −19 bars during desiccation. Leaf water potential showed no sign of recovery when leaf water potentials decreased to −20 bars or below during desiccation. The lack of full recovery of leaf water potential was attributable to increased resistance to water transport in the roots and stem. The resistance ultimately became large enough to result in death of the leaves because net water loss continued even after the soil had been rewatered.  相似文献

The daily (24-hour) carbon balances of whole sorghum plants (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench cv BTX616) were continuously measured throughout 15 days of water stress, followed by rewatering and 4 more days of measurements. The plants were grown under controlled environment conditions typical of warm, humid, sunny days. During the first 12 days, osmotic potentials decreased in parallel with decreased water potentials to maintain pressure potentials near 0.5 kilojoules per kilogram (5 bars). Immediately before rewatering on day 15, the water potential was −3.0 kilojoules per kilogram. Osmotic adjustment at this point was 1.0 kilojoules per kilogram, as measured by the decrease in the water potential at zero turgor from its initial value of −1.4 kilojoules per kilogram.

Gross input of carbon was less but the fraction retained was greater because a smaller fraction was lost through respiration in stressed plants than in unstressed plants. This was attributed to a lower rate of biomass synthesis, and conversely a higher rate of storage of photosynthate, due to inhibition of leaf expansion. The reduction in the cost associated with biomass synthesis more than balanced any metabolic cost of osmotic adjustment. The net daily gain of carbon was always positive in the stressed plants.

There was a large burst of respiration on rewatering, due to renewed synthesis of biomass from stored photosynthate. Over the next 3 days, osmotic adjustment was lost and the daily carbon balance returned to that typical of nonstressed plants. Thus, osmotic adjustment allowed the stressed plants to accumulate biomass carbon throughout the cycle, with little additional metabolic cost. Carbon stored during stress was immediately available for biomass synthesis on rewatering.

Sunflower plants ( Helianihus animus cv. Tall Single Yellow} were grown in the greenhouse in drain pipes (100 mm inside diameter and 1 m long) rilled with John Innes No. 2 compost. When the fifth leaf had emerged, half of the plants were left unwatered for 6 days, rewatered for 2 days and then not watered for another 12 days. Measurements of water relations and abaxial stomatal conductance were made at each leaf position at regular intervals during the experimental period. Estimates were also made of soil water potentials along the soil profile and of ABA concentrations in xylem sap and leaves.
Soil drying led to some reduction in stomatal conductance alter only 3 days but leaf turgors were not reduced until day 13 (6 days after rewatering). When the water relations of leaves did change, older leases became substantially dehydrated while high turgors were recorded in younger leaves. Leaf ABA content measured on the third youngest leaf hardly changed over the first 13 days of the experiment, despite substantial soil drying, while xylem ABA concentrations changed very significantly and dynamically as soil water status varied, even when there was no effect of soil drying on leaf water relations. We argue that the highest ABA concentrations in the xylem, found as a result of substantial soil drying, arise from synthesis in both the roots and the older leaves, and act to delay the development of water deficit in younger leases.
In other experiments ABA solutions were watered on to the root systems of sunflower plants to increase ABA concentrations in xylem sap. The stomatal response to applied ABA was quantitatively very similar to that to ABA generated as a result of soil drying. There was a log-linear relationship between the reduction of leaf conductance and the increase of ABA concentration m xylem sap.  相似文献

Turgor and elongation responses to changes in plant water statuswere investigated in leaves of Begonia plants from which irrigationwas withheld. Withholding irrigation for several days causeddecreases in epidermal cell turgor (P) by ca. 0.25 MPa and leafelongation rates by 66% compared to well watered controls. Rewateringcaused a large and transient increase in the rate of elongation,"stored growth," indicating that during periods at low P therewas an increase in the potential for wall expansion. Subsequently, the ratio of elongation rate/P decreased until both elongationrate and P reached values similar to those observed in leavesof well watered control plants. Tests for significant elasticcontributions or water transport limitations to the elongationresponses were negative: most of the elongation upon rewateringwas caused by irreversible extension and the estimated increasein the water potential gradient between the xylem and the growingcells caused by rewatering was less than 0.02 MPa. Results arediscussed in relation to factors that may contribute to increasethe growth potential at low P. 1Supported in part by USDA Competitive Grant 8502539 to MAM. 2Present address: Department of Botany/Plant Sciences, Universityof California Riverside, CA 92521, U.S.A.  相似文献

Summary Young seedlings of English Oak, Quercus robur L., and Silver Birch, Betula verrucosa Ehrl., were subjected to a number of consecutive periods during which water was withheld. During one 14-day period leaf-and soil-water potentials and leaf- and root-solute potentials of two groups of plants were sampled at noon of each day. One group of plants was watered every day while water was withheld from the other group. Solute accumulation in roots and leaves of oak seedlings subjected to water stress resulted in maintenance of turgor and high leaf conductance as the soil dried. In birch seedlings turgor was only maintained by stomatal closure at high soil water potential.Fourteen consecutive water stress cycles greatly reduced the growth of birch seedlings but had little effect on oak seedlings other than to alter root morphology. Water stress treatment resulted in the production of long thin roots in this plant. Stomatal behaviour in oak and birch seedlings during the 14-week stress period was consistent with observed changes in leaf water and solute potentials. Daily solute accumulation in oak leaves was presumably responsible for the maintenance of plant growth as water potentials fell.  相似文献

Effects of leaf water deficit and increase in endogenous ABA on photosynthesis of two tropical trees, t Acacia confusa and t Leucaena leucocephala, were investigated with two soil-drying methods, i.e. half or whole root system was subjected to soil drying. Half-root drying was achieved by allowing upper layer of soil column to dry and lower layer of soil column to remain watered. Half-root drying had little effect on leaf water potential, but when compared to the well-watered control, both methods of soil drying substantially increased the ABA concentration in xylem and reduced leaf conductance in both species. There was a significant relationship between leaf conductance and xylem ABA concentrations in both species, which was comparable to the same relationship that was generated by feeding ABA to excised twigs. The rate of photosynthesis was inhibited substantially in both soil-drying treatments and in both species, but photochchemical efficiency, measured as a ratio of variable fluorescence to a peak fluorescence emission of a dark-adapted leaf (Fv/Fm), was not reduced except in the whole root-dried t L. leucocephala plants where leaf water potential was reduced to –2.5 MPa. In all the cases where photosynthesis was inhibited, there was a concomitant reduction in both leaf conductance and calculated internal CO2 concentration. After two days of rewatering, leaf water potential and xylem ABA concentration rapidly returned to pre-treatment levels, but leaf conductance and photosynthesis of both whole-root and half root dried t L. leucocephala remained inhibited substantially. Rewatering led to a full recovery of both stomatal conductance and photosynthesis in soil-dried t A. confusa, although its photosynthesis of whole-root dried plants did not recover fully but such difference was not significant statistically. These results suggest that drought-induced decline of photosynthesis was mainly a result of the stomatal factor caused by the increase of ABA concentration in the xylem sap. Non-stomatal factors, e.g. reduced photochemical activity and/or carbon metabolic activity, were species-specific and were brought about only at very low water potential.  相似文献

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) (L.) was grown in a sand and nutrient solution system at two levels of phosphorus (0.5 and 5.0 millimolar). Within each phosphorus treatment, plants were either watered daily or acclimated to water stress by subjection to several water stress cycles.

Stress acclimation increased leaf starch at the low phosphorus level, but not at the high phosphorus level. High phosphorus increased leaf sucrose and glucose concentration in both acclimated and nonacclimated plants, but had little effect on osmotic adjustment or the relationship between turgor and water potential.

In nonacclimated plants, high phosphorus increased both leaf conductance and photosynthesis at high water potentials. In acclimated plants, high phosphorus increased photosynthesis but decreased conductance, thus increasing water use efficiency at the single leaf level.
