The recent merger ofPlummera intoHymenoxys is followed here. The two previously recognized species ofPlummera are here treated as a single polymorphic species ofHymenoxys, H. ambigens, consisting of three varieties: var.ambigens from the Mescal, Santa Teresa, and Pinaleno Mountains of southeastern Arizona; var.floribunda from the Chiricahua, Dos Cabezas, Dragoon, Little Dragoon, and Mule Mountains of southeastern Arizona; and var.neomexicana described here from the Animas and Peloncillo Mountains of southwestern New Mexico.  相似文献

Aim The flowering plant genus Hoffmannseggia consists of 21 species distributed amphitropically between the arid regions of the south‐western United States and adjacent Mexico, and west‐central South America. This pattern of geographical disjunction is shared by numerous other angiosperm genera and has been the subject of discussions for more than a century with various authors advocating a northern origin for particular taxa and others advocating a southern origin. This study uses a well‐supported phylogeny of a genus with numerous species in each area to address the issues of a northern or southern origin and the facility with which organisms move between the two continents. Location South‐western United States and northern Mexico, northern Chile and Argentina, southern Bolivia, and western Peru. Methods Using DNA sequence data from the nuclear and chloroplast genomes, we generated a phylogenetic hypothesis for all species of Hoffmannseggia rooted with Zuccagnia and Balsamocarpon. Geographical data were optimized on the resultant tree to assess the probable continent of origin for the genus, the pattern of disjunctions between North and South America, and species radiations within the genus. Main conclusions Hoffmannseggia arose in South America and initially split into a suffrutescent (somewhat woody) and an herbaceous clade. Within each of these major clades, there have been at least two exchanges between North and South America. There are no data to support an ancestral pan‐American range for Hoffmannseggia and we therefore ascribe the amphitropical disjunctions to long‐distance dispersal. The phylogeny clearly shows that all dispersals were from South to North America and they occurred at different times and thus the pattern is not the result of a single simultaneous set of dispersals.  相似文献

Aedes brelandi Zavortink is reported for the first time outside of the United States, where it has been found in northern and central parts of Mexico. Ae. triseriatus (Say) is reported in northern and central Mexico and Ae. zoosophus Dyar and Knab is recorded in southern Mexico. Collection records for these species in northern, central, and southern Mexico showing the current distribution of the Aedes Triseriatus Group are included.  相似文献

During this century the southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), has extended its range from subtropical Mexico into the United States, below 38° N latitude. This maize‐feeding insect is now found from Arizona east to Alabama and north to Kansas, Missouri, and Tennessee. The species has adapted to the shorter growing seasons, longer summer daylengths, and lower winter temperatures present in the southern US than are present in Mexico. Life history, morphological, and behavioral traits were compared for populations of D. grandiosella from southeastern Missouri and southcentral Mexico and revealed differentiation in a suite of characters, some of which show clear adaptation to a northern climate while others are obviously less adaptive. An electrophoretic comparison of enzymes from D. grandiosella from the central portion of its range in the US and from a population from southcentral Mexico indicated that considerable genetic differentiation has occurred. Quantitative genetic studies should be undertaken on the original and dispersed populations to differentiate between those characters that have been directly responsible for the adaptation of this insect to northern maize‐growing regions and those that have changed merely due to genetic correlations with characters undergoing selection. Data from such studies, together with available information about the dispersal of this insect, should provide insight into factors regulating the movement of tropical insects into temperate regions.  相似文献

Cytological, flavonoid, and morphological data are provided for several varieties of the shrubby species Atriplex canescens (Pursh) Nutt. (x = 9) (fourwing saltbush) in the Mojavean and Sonoran deserts of southwestern United States and northern Mexico. These include var. linearis (S. Wats.) Munz (2x); var. angustifolia (Torr.) S. Wats. (2x, 4x); var. occidentalis (Torr. & Frem.) Welsh & Stutz (4x, 6x), the common variety; var. laciniata Parish (12x); and var. macilenta Jeps. (12x). Atriplex canescens var. grandidentatum Stutz & Sanderson (20x) is newly described. An autoploid origin from 12x var. laciniata is suggested for the 14x and 20x polyploids, through unreduced gametes. Founder populations of odd-ploid products arising during such a sequence of events could probably have returned to even-ploidy through genetic segregation and the rapid elimination of aneuploids. Morphological characters suggest an origin for 12x var. laciniata by interspecific hybridization of var. occidentalis with A. polycarpa (Torr.) S. Wats.  相似文献

Lithospermum (Boraginaceae) comprises approximately 40 species in both the Old and New Worlds, with a center of diversity in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Using ten cpDNA regions, a phylogeny of Lithospermum and related taxa was reconstructed. Lithospermum (including New World and Old World species) and related New World members of Lithospermeae form a monophyletic group, with Macromeria, Onosmodium, Nomosa, Lasiarrhenum, and Psilolaemus nested among species of Lithospermum. New World Lithospermeae also is a monophyletic group, with Eurasian species of Lithospermum sister to this group. Because Lithospermum is not monophyletic without the inclusion of the other New World genera, species from these genera are transferred to Lithospermum, and appropriate nomenclatural changes are made. New combinations are Lithospermum album, Lithospermum barbigerum, Lithospermum dodrantale, Lithospermum exsertum, Lithospermum helleri, Lithospemum leonotis, Lithospermum notatum, Lithospermum oaxacanum, Lithospermum pinetorum, Lithospermum rosei, Lithospermum trinverium, and Lithospermum unicum; new names are Lithospermum chiapense, Lithospermum johnstonii, Lithospermum macromeria, Lithospermum onosmodium, Lithospermum rzedowskii, and Lithospermum turneri.  相似文献

Buffelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare (L.) Link), a C4 perennial bunchgrass native to Africa and parts of Asia, has invaded broadly across the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Buffelgrass establishment may occur earlier than the natives it displaces which may preempt resource acquisition by native species and contribute to its invasion success. In a greenhouse, buffelgrass aboveground growth was tested against Arizona cottontop (Digitaria californica (Benth.) Henr.), a native C4 perennial bunchgrass, in pairwise combinations in a randomized complete block factorial design with 10 replications, three neighbor identities (self, other, and no neighbor), and three competition treatments (21‐day younger neighbor, 21‐day older neighbor, and same‐aged neighbor). When compared with control plants, there was no significant effect on aboveground biomass for older Arizona cottontop plants competing with younger buffelgrass plants (p > 0.05). However, when Arizona cottontop plants were of the same age or younger than buffelgrass plants, buffelgrass caused 95 and 88% reductions, respectively, in aboveground biomass (p < 0.05 in both cases). Intraspecific competition between same‐aged Arizona cottontop plants resulted in only 55% decline in aboveground biomass production (p < 0.05), thus interspecific competition with buffelgrass was more intense than intraspecific competition for Arizona cottontop when plants had similar emergence times. These results suggest that establishing native plants immediately following a disturbance event could be a practical technique for restoring or retaining diversity on sites with high potential for invasion by buffelgrass.  相似文献

One of the most common types of cactus flower in the southwestern United States is the large, colorful, cup-shaped flower.Echinocereus fasciculatus var.boyce-thompsonii in Arizona is a representative of this class of flowers. Its flowers are visited by three common types of insect visitors: medium-sized bees, small solitary bees, and beetles. All three types of visitors come into contact with the pollen, but only the mediumsized bees regularly touch the stigma in their visitations. Nests provide a place for individuals to rest, raise young, avoid predators, and escape inclement weather; consequently, knowledge of habitat characteristics important to nest placement is critical for managing species of conservation concern. Arizona gray squirrels (Sciurus arizonensis) are endemic to mountains of southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. We investigated factors influencing nest-site selection at 4 spatial scales (forest-type, nest-site, nest-tree, and within-canopy placement) to provide ecological information and management recommendations for this sensitive species. Nest densities were 2.6 times higher in riparian than pine-oak woodlands. Nest sites had more large trees, snags, logs, and canopy cover and had lower slope. Arizona gray squirrels selected tall trees with more interlocking trees and tended to place nests adjacent to the main trunk. Regardless of scale, Arizona gray squirrels seemed to select nesting areas for their ability to provide protection from predators and the elements as well as access to food. Consequently, maintaining large trees with closed canopies and downed logs should be considered when determining land management plans. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Transplanted clones of four widespread prairie grasses, Andropogon scoparius, A. gerardii, Panicum virgatum, and Sorghastrum nutans, that had survived in cultivation 1958-1962 in central Texas were studied without cultivation 1963-67 to determine survival patterns. In all four species, clones from northern and eastern sites in the United States were eliminated. Survival of A. scoparius was restricted to plants originating in central and southern Texas and in northern Mexico. Surviving clones of A. gerardii, P. virgatum, and S. nutans were chiefly of Texas origin but included other clones mostly from the south central United States. Population samples of the four species from a central Texas grassland community showed greatest survival in a multi-ramet comparison of clones originating from North Dakota to Mexico City and in a multi-clone comparison from six sites in Texas and one in New Mexico. While the superior adaptation to the local habitat by the local populations might have been expected, this study documented the survival potential of organisms in the local ecosystem.  相似文献

Expressions of theSalvia dorrii (Kellogg) Abrams complex, a member of subg.Audibertia Benth., are distributed over much of the western United States. The complex consists of two species,S. dorrii andS. pachyphylla Epling ex Munz.Salvia dorrii is divided into subsp.dorrii and subsp.mearnsii (Britton) McClintock, the latter endemic to central Arizona. Subspeciesdorrii is composed of four varieties: var.carnosa (Douglas ex Greene) Cronq., a large-leaved erect shrub of Washington and Idaho southward through Oregon into extreme north-central California: var.dorrii, a small-leaved erect shrub of southern Oregon and Idaho southward through the Great Basin of Nevada and western Utah to southeastern California and northern Arizona: var.pilosa (A. Gray) Strachan & Reveal, a small-leaved erect shrub differing from var.dorrii by pilose bracts and calyx, in southern California and western Arizona with disjunct populations in the Lahontan Basin of northwestern Nevada and northestern California; and var.clokeyi Strachan, var. nov., a low mat-forming subshrub of the high mountains of Clark Co., Nevada.Salvia pachyphylla ranges from southern California southward to the high mountains of Baja California Norte, Mexico, and eastward across extreme southern Nevada to (as a disjunct) northeastern Arizona. Solanum sect. Petota (tuber-bearing wild and cultivated potatoes) are a group of approximately 190 wild species distributed throughout the Americas from the southwestern United States south to Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. Solanum series Conicibaccata are a group of approximately 40 species within sect. Petota, distributed from central Mexico to central Bolivia, composed of diploids (2n = 2x = 24), tetraploids (2n = 4x = 48) and hexaploids (2n = 6x = 64); the polyploids are thought to be polysomic polyploids. This study initially was designed to address species boundaries of the four Mexican and Central American species of series Conicibaccata with AFLP data with the addition of first germplasm collections of one of these four species, Solanum woodsonii, as a follow-up to prior morphological, chloroplast DNA, and RAPD studies; and additional species of series Conicibaccata from South America. AFLP data from 12 primer combinations (1722 polymorphic bands) are unable to distinguish polyploid species long thought to be distinct. The data suggest a complex reticulate history of the tetraploids or the need for a broad downward reevaluation of the number of species in series Conicibaccata, a trend seen in other series of sect. Petota. Separately, through flow cytometry, we report the first ploidy level of S. woodsonii, as tetraploid (2n = 48). Contemporary distribution of North American species has been shaped by past glaciation events during the Quaternary period. However, their effects were not as severe in the southern Rocky Mountains and Northern Mexico as elsewhere in North America. In this context, we test hypotheses about the historical demography of Dendroctonus pseudotsugae, based on 136 haplotypes of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I. The phylogenetic analysis yielded four haplogroups corresponding to northwestern United States and southwestern Canada (NUS), southwestern United States (Arizona, SUS), northwestern Mexico (Sierra Madre Occidental, SMOC), and northeastern Mexico (Sierra Madre Oriental, SMOR). Predictions of demographic expansion were examined through neutrality tests against population growth and mismatch distribution. Results showed that the NUS and SMOC haplogroups have experienced demographic expansion events, whereas the SUS and SMOR haplogroups have not. Divergence times between pairs of haplogroups were estimated from early to middle Pleistocene. The longer divergence time between NUS and all other haplogroups could be the result of refugia within the Pacific Northwest and northern Rocky Mountains and long-term isolation from southernmost populations in Mexico. The results obtained in this study are in agreement with the evolutionary history of the host Douglas-fir, as the warmer climates of interglacial periods pushed conifers northward of Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, whereas environmental changes reduced the population size of Douglas-fir and forced fragmentation of distribution range southward into northern Mexico.  相似文献

In the United States, renewable energy mandates calling for increased production of cellulosic biofuels will require a diversity of bioenergy feedstocks to meet growing demands. Within the suite of potential energy crops, plants within the genus Agave promise to be a productive feedstock in hot and arid regions. The potential distributions of Agave tequilana and Agave deserti in the United States were evaluated based on plant growth parameters identified in an extensive literature review. A geospatial suitability model rooted in fuzzy logic was developed that utilized a suite of biophysical criteria to optimize ideal geographic locations for this new crop, and several suitability scenarios were tested for each species. The results of this spatially explicit suitability model suggest that there is potential for Agave to be grown as an energy feedstock in the southwestern region of the United States – particularly in Arizona, California, and Texas and a significant portion of these areas are proximate to existing transportation infrastructure. Both Agave species showed the highest state‐level renewable energy benefit in Arizona, where agave plants have the potential to contribute 4.8–9.6% of the states' ethanol consumption, and 2.5–4.9% of its electricity consumption, for A. deserti and A. tequilana, respectively. This analysis supports the feasibility of Agave as a complementary bioenergy feedstock that can be grown in areas too harsh for conventional energy feedstocks.  相似文献

Summary Atriplex hymenelytra is an evergreen shrub distributed in the hot deserts of parts of Mexico and the southwestern United States. The leaves of the species have a number of characteristics that are adaptive in a hot, dry environment, some of which change seasonally. Steeply angled leaves reduce midday solar interception, yet result in relatively high interception when solar angles are low and vapor pressure deficits are at a minimum. The leaves substantially reduce their absorptance of incident radiation during the hot periods of the year by changing their moisture and hence dissolved salt contents. At these times the light intensity required for saturation of photosynthesis is low and a reduction in the radiation absorbed by the leaves therefore results in a greater water-use efficiency.  相似文献

American black bears (Ursus americanus) have recolonized parts of their former range in the Trans-Pecos region of western Texas after a >40-year absence. Assessment of genetic variation, structuring, gene flow, and dispersal among bear populations along the borderlands of Mexico and Texas is important to gain a better understanding of recolonization by large carnivores. We evaluated aspects of genetic diversity and gene flow for 6 sampling areas of black bears in southwestern North America using genotypic data from 7 microsatellite loci. Our results indicated that genetic diversity generally was high in the metapopulation of black bears in northern Mexico and western Texas. The episodic gene flow occurring via desert corridors between populations in northern Mexico and those in western Texas has permitted the establishment of only moderate levels of genetic structuring. Bayesian clustering analyses and assignment testing depicted the presence of 3 subpopulations among our 6 sampling areas and attested to the generally panmictic nature of bear populations in the borderlands region. The potentially ephemeral nature of the small populations in western Texas and genotypic characteristics of bears recolonizing these habitats attest to the importance of linkages along this portion of the borderlands of the United States and Mexico to effectively conserve and manage the species in this part of its range.  相似文献
