The biogeography of lower Mesoamerican freshwater fishes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Aim This paper examines the importance of regional processes in determining the patterns of distribution and diversity of lower Mesoamerican freshwater fishes. Location We focused our analyses on the lower Mesoamerican region, which we define to include all the rivers of Panama and Costa Rica. The geographic boundaries are the Colombian Choco to the south and Lake Nicaragua to the north. Methods We described the biogeographical provinces of lower Mesoamerica (LMA) using presence/absence data of primary and secondary LMA freshwater fishes. We conducted subsequent analyses at the spatial resolution of the biogeographical provinces and described patterns of community composition, species richness, endemism, range size, and the permeability of dispersal barriers between biogeographical provinces. Results This study represents the first attempt since that of W. A. Bussing in 1976 to investigate the biogeographical regions of Mesoamerica, and our analyses demonstrate increased regional complexity in biodiversity patterns relative to previous studies. Changes in community composition across LMA clearly highlight the importance of both extrinsic geological processes and intrinsic biological differences among freshwater fish species in shaping the dispersal and diversification histories of the LMA freshwater fish fauna. The influence of biology and geology is also exemplified by patterns of endemism and turnover between biogeographical provinces, which suggests that the relative importance of regional speciation and dispersal varies spatially across the LMA landscape. Finally, it would seem to follow that secondary freshwater fishes will have larger range sizes than primary fishes as a result of the increased salinity tolerance posited for the former group, and thus the increased probability of dispersal along coastlines. We did not, however, find a significant difference between the average range size of primary and secondary freshwater fishes, indicating that the putative differences in physiological tolerance to seawater between the two groups are not reflected in their distribution patterns at the scale of LMA. The geometric distribution of range size of LMA freshwater fishes suggests that dispersal of both primary and secondary freshwater fishes along coastlines must be infrequent. Main conclusion The observation that regional processes exerted a strong influence on the assembly and maintenance of LMA freshwater fish communities has important consequences for both theory and conservation. We suggest that large‐scale biogeographical analyses are required to illuminate the backdrop upon which local interactions play themselves out, supporting a top‐down approach to the study of biological diversity. Our results also identify areas of high conservation priority, providing a baseline for informing conservation strategies for freshwater fishes in LMA. We conclude by calling for conservation planning and action that acknowledges the importance that regional processes play in determining patterns of organismal diversity, and that incorporates these processes in strategies to conserve remnant biological diversity.  相似文献

广西地形复杂,河流众多,适于不同鱼类的栖息和繁殖.经对分布于广西境内的各水系鱼类资源的调查、对相关馆藏标本的进一步鉴定以及对相关文献的整理,目前已知广西淡水鱼类15目37科143属290种和亚种,其中很多种类具有重要经济价值.对广西及其邻近省区鱼类多样性指数的计算、比较和分析表明,广西地区G指数最高,F指数和G-F指数除低于云南外,高于广东、海南、贵州和湖南.广西野生淡水鱼类的显著特点是物种多样性高,特有属、种多,很多物种分布区狭窄,区系成分表现出明显的东洋界特点,不同水系鱼类组成各具特色.近年来,广西自然水域的野生鱼类资源的破坏较为严重,本文对广西野生淡水鱼类资源的可持续利用进行了讨论.  相似文献

Synopsis The African Great Lakes are considered to be dynamically fragile ecosystems that are relatively resistant to minor changes with which they have co-evolved but vulnerable to major perturbations such as overfishing, the introduction of alien species and pollution. These lakes are inhabited by large species flocks of cichlid fishes which are characterised by a complex structure of interaction both between and within species, as is typical of mature ecosystems. Major perturbations, such as the disruption of trophic interactions through the introduction of alien fishes, may reverse the domination of relatively precocial, specialised forms and result in the creation of conditions that are conducive to the survival of more altricial, generalised forms with strong colonising abilities. The introduction of Nile perch and Nile tilapia, as well as other alien fishes, into Lake Victoria, combined with overfishing for the indigenous cichlid species, has resulted in marked changes to the fish communities and the fisheries that depend on them. The most important impacts of the Nile perch appear to be predation and aggressive effects whereas those of the tilapias include hybridization, overcrowding, competition for food and possibly the introduction of parasites and diseases. While the three proposed methods of conserving the indigenous flocks of cichlid fishes (captive propagation, reducing Nile perch stocks and closure of the haplochromine trawl fishery) all have merit, the changes that are occurring in Lake Victoria are basically irreversible. The highest priority should be to assist the governments of the riparian countries (Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya) with monitoring and research programmes and to support their policies of non-introduction of further alien fishes into any of the African Great Lakes so as prevent the same cycle of events from occurring, for example, in Lakes Tanganyika and Malawi. The diverse animal and plant communities of the African Great Lakes are a heritage of all mankind and it is the duty of every country to play a role in their conservation. It is therefore proposed that an internationally funded research programme should be mounted on the African Great Lakes on the scale of the tropical forest biome project of the IUCN. The biogeographical patterns of the obligate freshwater fishes of Nuclear Middle America, a region that expands from southern Guatemala to northern Nicaragua, are described herein. Historically, three broad ichthyological provinces have been assigned to Nuclear Middle America: the Usumacinta, and the San Juan in the Atlantic slope and the Chiapas-Nicaragüense in the Pacific slope. With the use of correspondence analysis and unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean cluster analysis of a presence/absence matrix of 76 obligate freshwater fishes, we identified four ichthyological provinces in Nuclear Middle America: (1) the Honduras and Guatemala Caribbean Highlands Province, (2) the Honduras and Nicaragua Mosquitia Province, (3) the Chiapas-El Salvador-Nacaome Province, and (4) the Choluteca and Nicaragua Pacific Province. Differences between provinces in species composition and species turnover between provinces were tested by analysis of similarity, the calculation of beta-diversity indices and an indicator species analysis. We then further characterized each province by identifying the number of endemics and classifying species according to their salinity tolerance. The most striking patterns of Nuclear Middle America freshwater fish distribution are its paucity of primary freshwater fishes and limited numbers of endemics. The four ichthyological provinces are distinct as indicated by the ANOSIM and beta-diversity analysis, although one province showed low beta-diversity values. These results suggest that, despite of the active geological history that characterized the region, there has been limited isolation of species in any given province, and historical drainage connectivity has been high.  相似文献

The origin and structure of Tutia Reef, a coral reef off the Tanganyika coast, is described. It is concluded that the reef is formed in part from the cutting back flat of the older reef 14 ft above the level of the present reef, and in part from seaward growth of the reef.
Based on lines of quadrats down three sides of the reef an assessment of the cover of living coral on the reef is made, and the distribution of the dominant corals of the reef described. It is suggested that, contrary to the views of Crossland (1902, 1903), many East African coral reefs are undergoing seaward growth.
The distribution of the fishes on the reef is described, and a correlation is shown with the distribution of living coral on the reef. Many species of fishes have restricted distribution on the reef.
The feeding relationships of the fishes are discussed, and the total fish biomass divided into separate feeding categories. Tutia Reef has a low biomass of herbivorous fishes compared with the results from Eniwetok Atoll obtained by Odum & Odum (1955). This is considered to be due to the fact that Tutia Reef exhibits characteristics of an outer reef, deriving much of its energy from plankton, not those of an enclosed and almost autotrophic logoon.  相似文献

The present-day faunas of the great African lakes present some of the world's best examples of 'explosive speciation'. Lakes Victoria and Malawi each probably have several hundred endemic species of cichlid fishes. Much can be inferred about the evolution of these fishes from morphology, behaviour and intra-lacustrine distribution and from the fact that they include taxa ranging from local races, through sibling species, to forms that display extensive differentiation. The time taken to acquire specific distinctness can sometimes be accurately defined, but fossil lineages are unknown. A recent study of a fossil sequence of molluscs in the Turkana basin throws new light on the history of African lake faunas. It also claims to have resolved events during speciation. While critical analysis based on our knowledge of living molluscs in this area fails to substantiate this claim, the fossil molluscs complement information provided by the biology of extant fishes and invertebrates and emphasize the importance of these lakes in the study of evolution in living and extinct populations.  相似文献

Contrary to a recently expressed view very little factual evidence has been brought forward to support the idea that predatory fishes, and especially Lates and Hydrocynus , have had restrictive effects on speciation among other African freshwater fishes. A considerable body of data supports the view that the effects of these fishes do not differ from those of other predators and that predation has facilitated speciation. Further reasons why Lates and Hydrocynus cannot be considered as having effects different from those of other predators are given.
The situation in lakes containing these predators is reconsidered. There is no need to attempt to minimize their effects in Lake Tanganyika where their presence and effects are fully compatible with the existence of a rich endemic fauna. The situation in Lakes Albert and Rudolf is more satisfactorily explained by the brief duration of the existence of the present-day lakes and by their recent invasion by a fully differentiated Nilotic fauna, than by imagining that Lates and Hydrocynus have restricted speciation.
The suggestion that Lates and Hydrocynus were responsible for the inception of the habit of upstream migration for purposes of spawning is discredited, and what seem to be more probable reasons for the phenomenon are given.  相似文献

The Tropical Eastern Pacific Biogeographic Region (TEP) is delimited by steep thermal gradients to the north and south, by a wide expanse of open ocean (the East Pacific Barrier) to the west, and by the Central American land mass to the east. Four provinces within the TEP have been recognized based on the distribution of rocky shore fishes and marine invertebrates: the Cortez, Mexican, Panamic, and Galápagos Provinces. For rocky shore fishes, hypothesized barriers between these provinces are areas lacking rocky outcroppings, specifically the Central American Gap between the Panamic and Mexican Provinces, the Sinaloan Gap between the Mexican and Cortez Provinces, and the Pelagic Gap between the mainland and the Islas Galápagos. The occurrence of 33 chaenopsid fish species within these provinces, as well as other oceanic islands or archipelagos in the TEP (Isla de Malpelo, Isla del Coco, and Islas Revillagigedo) were tallied based on literature records and observations of museum specimens. Chaenopsid distributions within the TEP support these hypothesized provinces and their intervening gaps. Twenty‐one species (64% of the TEP chaenopsid fauna) are restricted to a single mainland province or one of the oceanic islands or archipelagos. Of the mainland provinces, the Cortez and Panamic exhibit similar levels of endemism (50%), but the Mexican Province has only one endemic (10%). Of the remaining chaenopsids in the Mexican Province, three are widespread, occurring in all three mainland provinces, four are shared only with the Cortez Province, and two are shared only with the Panamic Province. Within the TEP, the Pelagic Gap is the most effective (crossed by only 3 of 33 species adjacent to it), followed by the Central American Gap (crossed by 5 of 21 species), and the Sinaloan Gap (crossed by 7 of 17 species). Only one species, Chaenopsis alepidota, which is found off southern California and in the Cortez Province, crosses a barrier delimiting the TEP. Species‐level phylogenetic hypotheses for the Chaenopsidae imply exclusively allopatric speciation for these fishes in the TEP. Of the barriers delimiting the TEP, the most important in the recent evolution of chaenopsids is the Isthmian Barrier which is implicated in six speciation events. Within the TEP, the Central American Gap and Sinaloan Gap are each implicated in three speciation events, while the Pelagic Gap is implicated in three speciation events of island endemics from mainland populations and one inter‐island speciation event.  相似文献

Aim To understand why and when areas of endemism (provinces) of the tropical Atlantic Ocean were formed, how they relate to each other, and what processes have contributed to faunal enrichment. Location Atlantic Ocean. Methods The distributions of 2605 species of reef fishes were compiled for 25 areas of the Atlantic and southern Africa. Maximum‐parsimony and distance analyses were employed to investigate biogeographical relationships among those areas. A collection of 26 phylogenies of various Atlantic reef fish taxa was used to assess patterns of origin and diversification relative to evolutionary scenarios based on spatio‐temporal sequences of species splitting produced by geological and palaeoceanographic events. We present data on faunal (species and genera) richness, endemism patterns, diversity buildup (i.e. speciation processes), and evaluate the operation of the main biogeographical barriers and/or filters. Results Phylogenetic (proportion of sister species) and distributional (number of shared species) patterns are generally concordant with recognized biogeographical provinces in the Atlantic. The highly uneven distribution of species in certain genera appears to be related to their origin, with highest species richness in areas with the greatest phylogenetic depth. Diversity buildup in Atlantic reef fishes involved (1) diversification within each province, (2) isolation as a result of biogeographical barriers, and (3) stochastic accretion by means of dispersal between provinces. The timing of divergence events is not concordant among taxonomic groups. The three soft (non‐terrestrial) inter‐regional barriers (mid‐Atlantic, Amazon, and Benguela) clearly act as ‘filters’ by restricting dispersal but at the same time allowing occasional crossings that apparently lead to the establishment of new populations and species. Fluctuations in the effectiveness of the filters, combined with ecological differences among provinces, apparently provide a mechanism for much of the recent diversification of reef fishes in the Atlantic. Main conclusions Our data set indicates that both historical events (e.g. Tethys closure) and relatively recent dispersal (with or without further speciation) have had a strong influence on Atlantic tropical marine biodiversity and have contributed to the biogeographical patterns we observe today; however, examples of the latter process outnumber those of the former.  相似文献

Aging research in vertebrates is hampered by the lack of short-lived models. Annual fishes of the genus Nothobranchius live in East African seasonal ponds. Their life expectancy in the wild is limited by the duration of the wet season and their lifespan in captivity is also short. Nothobranchius are popular aquarium fishes and many different species are kept as captive strains, providing rich material for comparative studies. The present paper aims at reviving the interest in these fishes by reporting that: (1) Nothobranchius can be cultured, and their eggs stored dry at room temperature for months or years, offering inexpensive methods of embryo storage; (2) Nothobranchius show accelerated growth and expression of aging biomarkers at the level of histology and behaviour; (3) the species Nothobranchius furzeri has a maximum lifespan of only 3 months and offers the possibility to perform investigations thus far unthinkable in a vertebrate, such as drug screening with life-long pharmacological treatments and experimental evolution; (4) when the lifespan of different species is compared, a general correlation is found between wet season duration in their natural habitat and longevity in captivity; and (5) vertebrate aging-related genes, such as p66Shc and MTP, can be easily isolated in Nothobranchius by homology cloning. These fishes can become excellent models for aging studies. They can be employed to test the effects of experimental manipulation on aging at a pace comparable with that of Drosophila and to probe the effects of natural selection on the evolution of aging-related genes.  相似文献

Juveniles of African catfish, C. gariepinus were fed with different biowastes procured from various stations viz., slaughter houses, poultry sheds, fish markets, hotel kitchens and ware houses. Maximum growth was obtained in the fishes fed with poultry wastes and minimum in the fishes fed with warehouse waste. Total protein, fat, and dry matter contents were high in poultry and butcher wastes fed fishes. Culture of catfishes in controlled conditions by feeding biowaste is an alternative step to control the prevailing wide spreading culture practices of African catfish, which poses a threat to inland aquatic biodiversity. The present approach is ideal for recycling biowastes to fish protein and to keep our environment clean and hygienic.  相似文献

Aim To describe the biogeography of the ascidian fauna of southern Africa, to compare the results obtained with those reported for other fauna and flora of the same region, and to speculate about the origin of ascidians in the region. Location Southern Africa extending over 4000 km from Mossâmedes (15° S–12° E) to Inhaca Island (26°30′ S–33° E), including Vema Seamount (31°40′ S–8 °20′ E), Amsterdam‐Saint Paul Islands (38° S–77°30′ E) and the Tristan‐Gough Islands (38° S–12°20′ W). Methods We constructed a presence/absence matrix of 168 species for 26 biogeographical divisions, 21 classical biogeographical regions described by Briggs (Marine zoogeography, McGraw‐Hill, New York, 1974) and five provinces within the southern African region. We considered the following limits and divisions into provinces for the southern African region: Namibia, Namaqua, Agulhas and Natal as proposed by Branch et al. (Two oceans. A guide to the marine life of southern Africa, David Philip Publishers, 1994), and the West Wind Drift Islands province (WWD) according to Briggs (Global biogeography, Elsevier Health Sciences, Amsterdam, 1995). To examine the biogeographical structure, species and divisions were classified using cluster analysis (based on UPGMA as the aggregation algorithm) with the Bray–Curtis index of similarity. This classification was combined with MDS ordination. Main conclusions Four main groups were obtained from the analysis of affinities among species: (1) species present in the WWD, separated by a high percentage of endemisms and a low number of species with a southern African distribution. Moreover, in the light of the species distribution and the results of further analysis, which revealed that they are completely separated and not at all related to the southern African region, it appears that there are no close relationships among the different islands and seamounts of the West Wind Drift Island province. This province was therefore removed from the remaining analyses; (2) species with a wide distribution; (3) species of colder waters present in Namaqua and Agulhas provinces, a transitional temperate area in which gradual mixing and replacement of species negate previous hypotheses on the existence of a marked distributional break at Cape of Good Hope; (4) species of warmer waters related to Natal province. The classification into biogeographical components was dominated by the endemic (47%), Indo‐Pacific (25%) and cosmopolitan (13%) components. The analysis of affinities among biogeographical areas separated Namibia from the rest of the southern African provinces and showed that it was related to some extent to the Antarctic region because of the cold‐temperate character of the province and the low sampling effort; Namaqua, Agulhas and Natal were grouped together and found to be closely related to the Indo‐West Pacific region. In general, our results were consistent with those obtained for other southern African marine invertebrates. The frequency distribution of solitary/colonial strategies among provinces confirmed the domination of colonial organisms in tropical regions and solitary organisms in colder regions. Finally, we speculate that the southern African ascidian fauna mainly comprises Indo‐Pacific, Antarctic and eastern Atlantic ascidians.  相似文献

The three largest water bodies of East Africa, Lake Victoria, Tanganyika, and Malawi contain an estimated number of 2,000 endemic cichlid fish species, in addition, to a mostly uncounted wealth of invertebrates. While the terrestrial diversity is reasonably well protected, as economic and touristic interests coincide with biological conservation strategies, this is not the case for most African lakes and rivers. Nonetheless, it must be promoted that these aquatic ecosystems also deserve protection. Conservation strategies for aquatic biota have so far been the same as for terrestrial environments, i.e., by declaring biodiversity hotspots national parks. Such parks also contain rivers and lake shores. Here, I argue that it seems questionable that this strategy will work, given strong micro-geographic structure of the species flocks and the great degree of local endemism. I suggest a novel strategy for protecting African Lake communities that accounts for local endemism, derived from recent molecular phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies on East African cichlid fishes. While connectivity is the major problem for terrestrial and marine national parks, to ensure a large enough effective population size of the protected animals, this is not the case in most taxa of African rivers and lakes, where local endemism prevails. For example, most littoral cichlid species are subdivided into numerous distinct “color morphs” with restricted distribution, and unlike marine fishes with planktonic larvae display brood care with small offspring numbers. It is argued that the establishment of “micro-scale protected areas,” a large number of small stretches of strictly protected coast line, each only some hundreds of meters long, is likely to work best to preserve the littoral communities in African lakes. Such protected zones can sustain a reasonably effective population size of littoral species, serve as protected spawning ground or nursery area for pelagic species, and at the same time re-seed neighboring populations that are exploited continuously. As long-term stability of littoral fishing grounds is in the immediate interest of village communities, such small protected areas should be managed and controlled by the local communities themselves, and supervised by governmental institutions.  相似文献

Aim  To provide an objective geographic framework displaying the distribution patterns of freshwater fishes from Argentina.
Location  Argentina, southern South America.
Methods  Parsimony analysis of endemicity (PAE) and similarity and cluster analyses were applied to presence and absence data on 440 fish species from 52 localities in Argentina. Both 50% majority consensus and strict consensus analyses were undertaken in the first case, and the Jaccard similarity index was used in the second.
Results  Five ichthyogeographic provinces are described based on a PAE of the 52 localities. A cluster analysis provided similar results.
Main conclusions  The following zoogeographic provinces are proposed for Argentine freshwater fish fauna following the International Code of Area Nomenclature: Andean Cuyan, Patagonian, Aymaran, Great Rivers and Pampean. The former two are placed within the Andean Subregion of the Austral Region, and the latter three within the Neotropical Subregion of the Holotropical Region. These provinces, based on results coinciding with PAE and cluster analysis, represent the first classification of Argentine provinces based on objective methods. Some small regions of endemism and some localities remain separated from the proposed regions. The new scheme includes valuable empirical information from previous schemes, and is in agreement with ecological zones and other environmental arrangements proposed earlier.  相似文献

Marine provinces, founded on contrasting floras or faunas, have been recognized for more than 150 years but were not consistently defined by endemism until 1974. At that time, provinces were based on at least a 10% endemism and nested within biogeographic regions that covered large geographic areas with contrasting biotic characteristics. Over time, some minor adjustments were made but the overall arrangement remained essentially unaltered. In many provinces, data on endemism were still not available, or were available only for the most widely studied vertebrates (fishes), a problem that is ongoing. In this report we propose a realignment for three reasons. First, recent works have provided new information to modify or redefine the various divisions and to describe new ones, including the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge, Southern Ocean, Tropical East Pacific and Northeast Pacific. Second, phylogeographic studies have demonstrated genetic subdivisions within and between species that generally corroborated provinces based on taxonomic partitions, with a notable exception at the Indian–Pacific oceanic boundary. Third, the original separation of the warm‐temperate provinces from the adjoining tropical ones has distracted from their close phylogenetic relationships. Here we propose uniting warm‐temperate and tropical regions into a single warm region within each ocean basin, while still recognizing provinces within the warm‐temperate and tropical zones. These biogeographic subdivisions are based primarily on fish distribution but utilize other marine groups for comparison. They are intended to demonstrate the evolutionary relationships of the living marine biota, and to serve as a framework for the establishment of smaller ecological units in a conservation context.  相似文献

Large-bodied reef fishes represent an economically and ecologically important segment of the coral reef fish assemblage. Many of these individuals supply the bulk of the reproductive output for their population and have a disproportionate effect on their environment (e.g. as apex predators or bioeroding herbivores). Large-bodied reef fishes also tend to be at greatest risk of overfishing, and their loss can result in a myriad of either cascading (direct) or indirect trophic and other effects. While many studies have investigated habitat characteristics affecting populations of small-bodied reef fishes, few have explored the relationship between large-bodied species and their environment. Here, we describe the distribution of the large-bodied reef fishes in the Mariana Archipelago with an emphasis on the environmental factors associated with their distribution. Of the factors considered in this study, a negative association with human population density showed the highest relative influence on the distribution of large-bodied reef fishes; however, depth, water temperature, and distance to deep water also were important. These findings provide new information on the ecology of large-bodied reef fishes can inform discussions concerning essential fish habitat and ecosystem-based management for these species and highlight important knowledge gaps worthy of additional research.  相似文献

Many species of ornamental freshwater fishes are imported into Japan from all over the world. We found African lampeye Aplocheilichthys normani and dwarf gourami Colisa lalia suffering from an iridovirus infection just after being imported by tropical fish wholesalers from Singapore. African lampeye were cultured on the Indonesian Island of Sumatra and dwarf gourami were cultured in Malaysia before export. Diseased fishes displayed distinct histopathological signs of iridovirus infection: systemic appearance of inclusion body-bearing cells, and necrosis of splenocytes and hematopoietic cells. Electron microscopy revealed viral particles (African lampeye:180 to 200 nm in edge to edge diameter; dwarf gourami: 140 to 150 nm in diameter) in an inclusion body within the cytoplasm of inclusion body-bearing cells as well as in the cytoplasm of necrotized cells. Experimental infection with an iridovirus isolate from African lampeye (ALIV) revealed pathogenicity of ALIV to African lampeye and pearl gourami Trichogaster leeri. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products from ALIV and an iridovirus isolate from dwarf gourami (DGIV) using iridovirus-specific primers were indistinguishable. The nuclear gene X-src is a member of the tyrosine-kinase class of proto-oncogenes whose normal product is localized within the cytoplasm of the cell. The X-src gene has been used in only a few phylogenetic studies, each focusing on systematics of killifishes (Cyprinodontiformes). The present study is an attempt to examine the phylogenetic utility of X-src for uncovering relationships of representative cichlid fishes, especially the cichlids of Middle America. The family Cichlidae is a species-rich group of tropical freshwater fish made up of more than 1000 species which show a Gondwanan pattern of distribution. Cichlid fish have been the focus of numerous studies ranging from behavioral to biogeographical to systematic in nature. Particular emphasis has focused on the cichlids of the African Great Lakes and the explosive adaptive radiation of this group. However, Neotropical cichlids have received considerably less attention than their African counterparts. Our findings regarding the utility of X-src concur with those of previous phylogenetic analyses showing the exons of X-src to be highly conserved and useful mostly for revealing deep relationships among taxa. Like previous X-src studies, we also found the intron sequences of the gene to be variable in length and difficult to align across distantly related taxa but they provided useful information for resolving relationships among more closely related taxa. The X-src phylogeny supports the monophyly of Neotropical cichlids and cichlasomines groups A (=heroines) + B (=cichlasomines). A highly resolved tree is obtained within the heroines but little support is evident for most nodes based on the low number of unambiguous substitutions. The X-src gene is likely to be quite useful for resolving deep phylogenetic relationships such as those among major groups of actinopterygian fishes.  相似文献
