The food of a community of East African freshwater fishes   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Quantitative data on the food of the fishes inhabiting Lake Mcllwaine, Rhodesia, show that the feeding of the dominant species in this community ( Clarias gariepinus (Burchell), Hydrocynus vittatus (Castelnau), Tilapia melanopleura Dumeril, Tilapia mossamhica Peters, Tilapia macrochir Boulenger, Labeo altivelis Peters, and Gnathonemus macrolepidotus (Peters)) covers a wide spectrum, and almost all elements of the potential food supplyare utilized. Exceptions are noted, however, and the introduction of the Indian carp, Catla catla (Cuv. & Val.), is advocated in order to utilize the large blooms of phyto- and zooplankton. The oligochaete, Branchiura cf. sowerbyi , which forms over 50% of the benthic biomass is also not utilized as a source of fish food. However, no fish species is known tofeed on oligochaetes to any large extent. Predation by the Tigerfish, Hydrocynus vittatus , is shown to have severe effects upon recruitment to the valuable Tilapia fishery, and the reduction of the abundance of H. vittatus by means of selective fishing techniques is advocated.  相似文献

The histological characteristics of the pharynx, terminal genitalium and acetabulum of four paramphistomes from African freshwater fishes are described. New pharyngeal types are described for Basidiodiscus ectorchis, Sandonia sudanensis, Panamphistomum benoiti and Brevicaecum niloticum, new terminal genitalium types for P. benoiti and B. niloticum, and a new acetabular type for P. benoiti. Amendments are made to the basidiodiscus, sandonia and brevicaecum acetabular types of Sey (1987). P. benoiti is reported from Synodontis nigrita in Nigeria, a new host and geographical record.  相似文献

Native and exotic fishes were collected from 29 sites across coastal and inland New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, using a range of techniques, to infer the distribution of Bothriocephalus acheilognathi (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea) and the host species in which it occurs. The distribution of B. acheilognathi was determined by that of its principal host, carp, Cyprinus carpio; it did not occur at sites where carp were not present. The parasite was recorded from all native fish species where the sample size exceeded 30 and which were collected sympatrically with carp: Hypseleotris klunzingeri, Hypseleotris sp. 4, Hypseleotris sp. 5, Phylipnodon grandiceps and Retropinna semoni. Bothriocephalus acheilognathi was also recorded from the exotic fishes Gambusia holbrooki and Carassius auratus. Hypseleotris sp. 4, Hypseleotris sp. 5, P. grandiceps, R. semoni and C. auratus are new host records. The parasite was not recorded from any sites in coastal drainages. The only carp population examined from a coastal drainage (Albert River, south-east Queensland) was also free of infection; those fish had a parasite fauna distinct from that of carp in inland drainages and may represent a separate introduction event. Bothriocephalus acheilognathi has apparently spread along with its carp hosts and is so far restricted to the Murray-Darling Basin. The low host specificity of this parasite is cause for concern given the threatened or endangered nature of some Australian native freshwater fish species. A revised list of definitive hosts of B. acheilognathiis presented.  相似文献

The seasonal distribution of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in freshwater environs and in association with freshwater fishes was studied in 1982 and 1983. The occurrence of this organism in water and sediments at the three sites studied was very infrequent and was restricted to the summer months, although it was not always isolated during these months. The association of V. parahaemolyticus with plankton was chiefly confined to the summer months and progressively declined with the onset of monsoons, remaining below detectable levels during the postmonsoon and winter months. The incidence and counts of V. parahaemolyticus were consistently higher in association with plankton than with water and sediment samples. V. parahaemolyticus could be recovered throughout the period of investigation from freshly caught and market samples of freshwater fishes. The highest recovery rate of this halophile from fishes was invariably from fecal samples. Most of the strains isolated in this study were untypable, and those which could be typed were predominantly serotypes encountered in the environment. All the isolates were Kanagawa negative. From this study, it could be concluded that the survival of V. parahaemolyticus in freshwater ecosystems is transient and dependent on a biological host.  相似文献

Many species of ornamental freshwater fishes are imported into Japan from all over the world. We found African lampeye Aplocheilichthys normani and dwarf gourami Colisa lalia suffering from an iridovirus infection just after being imported by tropical fish wholesalers from Singapore. African lampeye were cultured on the Indonesian Island of Sumatra and dwarf gourami were cultured in Malaysia before export. Diseased fishes displayed distinct histopathological signs of iridovirus infection: systemic appearance of inclusion body-bearing cells, and necrosis of splenocytes and hematopoietic cells. Electron microscopy revealed viral particles (African lampeye:180 to 200 nm in edge to edge diameter; dwarf gourami: 140 to 150 nm in diameter) in an inclusion body within the cytoplasm of inclusion body-bearing cells as well as in the cytoplasm of necrotized cells. Experimental infection with an iridovirus isolate from African lampeye (ALIV) revealed pathogenicity of ALIV to African lampeye and pearl gourami Trichogaster leeri. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products from ALIV and an iridovirus isolate from dwarf gourami (DGIV) using iridovirus-specific primers were indistinguishable. The nucleotide sequence of PCR products derived from ALIV (696 base pairs) and DGIV (701 base pairs) had 95.3% identity. These results indicate that ALIV and DGIV have a single origin.  相似文献

We used metadata on nine reproductive traits of 67 species of Brazilian iteroparous, oviparous, teleost freshwater fishes to test phenotypes associations to discriminate species that only spawn in large rivers (lotic fishes) from those capable to spawn in lentic habitats (lentic fishes). We tested the hypothesis that lotic fishes present spawning migration, shorter spawning season, single spawning, no parental care, free eggs, higher relative fecundity, faster embryogenesis, and larger size, while lentic fishes present no spawning migration, longer spawning season, multiple spawning, parental care, adhesive eggs, lower relative fecundity, slower embryogenesis, and smaller size. Our analyses supported the hypothesis but not all phenotypic associations satisfied it, specifically with regard to lentic fishes or to pairs of phenotypes typical of lentic fishes. We also concluded that spawning in large rivers is a better predictor of bionomic characters than spawning in lentic habitats, and lotic fishes are specialists compared to lentic fishes.  相似文献

Spatial synchrony in species abundance is a general phenomenon that has been found in populations representing virtually all major taxa. Dispersal among populations and synchronous stochastic effects (the so called "Moran effect") are the mechanisms most likely to explain such synchrony patterns. Very few studies have related the degree of spatial synchrony to the biological characteristics of species. Here we present a case where specific predictions can be made to relate river fish species characteristics and synchrony determined exclusively by a Moran effect through the expected sensitivity of species to the regional component of environmental stochasticity. By analyzing 23-year time series of abundance estimates in two isolated localities we show that species associated with synchronized reproduction during the wet season, high fecundity, small egg size and high gonado-somatic index (the so called "periodic" strategy) have a higher degree of spatial synchrony in population dynamics than species associated with the opposite traits (the so called "equilibrium" strategy). This is supported by significant relationships (P values <0.01) between species traits and the levels of synchrony after removing taxonomical relatedness. Spatial synchrony computed from summed annual total catches by groups of species, separated into strategy types also showed a significantly higher degree of synchrony for the periodic (r=0.83) than the equilibrium (r=0.46) group. Regional hydrological variability is likely to be partly responsible for the observed synchrony pattern and a regional discharge index showed better relationships with the periodic group, supporting the expected differential effect of regional environmental correlation on population dynamics.  相似文献

Track analysis and Parsimony analysis of endemicity (PAE) were performed to analyze the distribution pattern of Costa Rican freshwater fishes. A basic matrix (presence/absence) was prepared using the distribution of 77 freshwater fish. The data were analyzed with CLIQUE software in order to find generalized tracks (cliques). Data also were analyzed with the software NONA and Winclada version 1.00.08 in order to perform the Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity (PAE). Fourteen equally probable cliques were found with 31 species in each and the intersection of the amount was selected as a generalized track dividing the country in two main zones: Atlantic slope from Matina to Lake Nicaragua and Pacific slope from the Coto River to the basin of the Tempisque River connected with some branches oriented to the central part of the country. PAE analysis found ten cladogram areas (72 steps, CI=0.45, RI=0.64), using the "strict consensus option" two grouping zones were identified: Atlantic slope and Pacific slope. Both PAE and Track Analysis show the division of the two slopes and the orientation of the generalized track suggests new biogeographical evidence on the influence of both old and new southern elements to explain the migrations of freshwater fish into Central America during two different geological events.  相似文献

The biogeography of lower Mesoamerican freshwater fishes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Aim This paper examines the importance of regional processes in determining the patterns of distribution and diversity of lower Mesoamerican freshwater fishes. Location We focused our analyses on the lower Mesoamerican region, which we define to include all the rivers of Panama and Costa Rica. The geographic boundaries are the Colombian Choco to the south and Lake Nicaragua to the north. Methods We described the biogeographical provinces of lower Mesoamerica (LMA) using presence/absence data of primary and secondary LMA freshwater fishes. We conducted subsequent analyses at the spatial resolution of the biogeographical provinces and described patterns of community composition, species richness, endemism, range size, and the permeability of dispersal barriers between biogeographical provinces. Results This study represents the first attempt since that of W. A. Bussing in 1976 to investigate the biogeographical regions of Mesoamerica, and our analyses demonstrate increased regional complexity in biodiversity patterns relative to previous studies. Changes in community composition across LMA clearly highlight the importance of both extrinsic geological processes and intrinsic biological differences among freshwater fish species in shaping the dispersal and diversification histories of the LMA freshwater fish fauna. The influence of biology and geology is also exemplified by patterns of endemism and turnover between biogeographical provinces, which suggests that the relative importance of regional speciation and dispersal varies spatially across the LMA landscape. Finally, it would seem to follow that secondary freshwater fishes will have larger range sizes than primary fishes as a result of the increased salinity tolerance posited for the former group, and thus the increased probability of dispersal along coastlines. We did not, however, find a significant difference between the average range size of primary and secondary freshwater fishes, indicating that the putative differences in physiological tolerance to seawater between the two groups are not reflected in their distribution patterns at the scale of LMA. The geometric distribution of range size of LMA freshwater fishes suggests that dispersal of both primary and secondary freshwater fishes along coastlines must be infrequent. Main conclusion The observation that regional processes exerted a strong influence on the assembly and maintenance of LMA freshwater fish communities has important consequences for both theory and conservation. We suggest that large‐scale biogeographical analyses are required to illuminate the backdrop upon which local interactions play themselves out, supporting a top‐down approach to the study of biological diversity. Our results also identify areas of high conservation priority, providing a baseline for informing conservation strategies for freshwater fishes in LMA. We conclude by calling for conservation planning and action that acknowledges the importance that regional processes play in determining patterns of organismal diversity, and that incorporates these processes in strategies to conserve remnant biological diversity.  相似文献

Nutrient and energy content of freshwater fishes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The analyses of fresh total body homogenates of 2385 freshwater fishes from 17 species originating in natural waters and aquaculture facilities resulted in average values of 19.1–37.8% dry matter, 13.6–18.3% crude protein, 0.8–18.3% crude fat, 0.16–2.17% nitrogen-free extracts (NFE), 2.2–2.9% nitrogen and 0.39–1.02% phosphorus. The gross energy content ranged from 3.83 to 11.49 MJ/kg. With increasing fat content in the fishes, water content decreased and dry matter content increased. Through this interdependence, a significant correlation was found between dry matter and crude fat and energy content (r2=0.92–0.97). The values of crude protein, crude ash, NFE, nitrogen and phosphorus did not show any significant influence on dry matter content (r2=0.0005–0.46). Based on the significant correlation between dry matter and gross energy (gross energy [MJ/kg]=0.0253 dry matter [%]1.6783), the energy content of freshwater fishes can easily be estimated by the dry matter content in the total body.  相似文献

Delineating biogeographical regions is a critical step towards the establishment and evaluation of conservation priorities. In the present study, we analysed the distribution patterns of the freshwater fish of an understudied European biodiversity hotspot, the Balkan Peninsula. Based on the most extensive available database of native freshwater fish species distributions, we performed a hierarchical clustering analysis to identify the major biogeographical regions of the Balkan Peninsula. We also highlighted the ‘hottest hotspots’ of freshwater fish diversity across the delimited biogeographical regions by describing the patterns of species richness, endemic and vulnerable species; indicator species were also determined. The bioregionalisation scheme consisted of eight groups of drainage basins that correspond to distinct regions of the Balkan Peninsula. Overall, the delineated biogeographical regions varied in terms of species richness, endemism, vulnerability (i.e. extinction threats) and indicator species composition. From a conservation perspective, this study emphasises the prioritisation of areas characterised by high levels of irreplaceability (endemism) and vulnerability (i.e. the Attikobeotia region, Ionian Sea and Prespa Lakes) and stresses the necessity of implementing a network of protected freshwater areas across the Balkan Peninsula.  相似文献
