Lutein and zeaxanthin are major carotenoids in the eye but are also found in post-receptoral visual pathways. It has been hypothesized that these pigments influence the processing of visual signals within and post-retina, and that increasing lutein and zeaxanthin levels within the visual system will lead to increased visual processing speeds. To test this, we measured macular pigment density (as a biomarker of lutein and zeaxanthin levels in brain), critical flicker fusion (CFF) thresholds, and visual motor reaction time in young healthy subjects (n = 92). Changes in these outcome variables were also assessed after four months of supplementation with either placebo (n = 10), zeaxanthin only (20 mg/day; n = 29) or a mixed formulation containing 26 mg/day zeaxanthin, 8 mg/day lutein, and 190 mg/day mixed omega-3 fatty acids (n = 25). Significant correlations were found between retinal lutein and zeaxanthin (macular pigment) and CFF thresholds (p<0.01) and visual motor performance (overall p<0.01). Supplementation with zeaxanthin and the mixed formulation (considered together) produced significant (p<0.01) increases in CFF thresholds (∼12%) and visual motor reaction time (∼10%) compared to placebo. In general, increasing macular pigment density through supplementation (average increase of about 0.09 log units) resulted in significant improvements in visual processing speed, even when testing young, healthy individuals who tend to be at peak efficiency.  相似文献

Despite the large amount of variation found in the night (scotopic) vision capabilities of healthy volunteers, little effort has been made to characterize this variation and factors, genetic and non-genetic, that influence it. In the largest population of healthy observers measured for scotopic visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (CS) to date, we quantified the effect of a range of variables on visual performance. We found that young volunteers with excellent photopic vision exhibit great variation in their scotopic VA and CS, and this variation is reliable from one testing session to the next. We additionally identified that factors such as Circadian preference, iris color, astigmatism, depression, sex and education have no significant impact on scotopic visual function. We confirmed previous work showing that the amount of time spent on the vision test influences performance and that laser eye surgery results in worse scotopic vision. We also showed a significant effect of intelligence and photopic visual performance on scotopic VA and CS, but all of these variables collectively explain <30% of the variation in scotopic vision. The wide variation seen in young healthy volunteers with excellent photopic vision, the high test-retest agreement, and the vast majority of the variation in scotopic vision remaining unexplained by obvious non-genetic factors suggests a strong genetic component. Our preliminary genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 106 participants ruled out any common genetic variants of very large effect and paves the way for future, larger genetic studies of scotopic vision.  相似文献

We summarize characteristic sequences of morphological change in the teleost visual system from larvae to large adults at the level of the retina, the optic tract and the optic tectum. These shifts include sizes and ratios of cone and rod receptor cells, sizes and types of retinal ganglion cells and optic tract fibers as well as features of the optic tectum. Teleost larvae are the smallest vertebrates known. We suggest that the utilization of color contrasts as an adaptive benefit dictates the starting point of morophological development, which is a pure cone retina in most fish larvae. The direction of morphological and functional shifts in the teleost visual system during growth is determined by continuous retinal stretch, which allows for improving visual abilities. The larval visual system probably provides just adequate photopic (cone-)acuity for plankton feeding, but limited space in the retina hampers optimization of both, photopic resolving power and sensitivity Limited space also Irevents the simultaneous development of the scotopic (rod-)system. Over a wide range of body sizes, morphological parameters change, photopic and scotopic resolving power, acuity and sensitivity improve. Size constraints in the teleost visual system and lifefong shifts in sensory capacities are discussed with respect to ecology and the niche concept.  相似文献

Retinal structure and concentration of retinoids involved in phototransduction changed during early development of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss , correlating with improvements in visual function. A test chamber was used to evaluate the presence of optokinetic or optomotor responses and to assess the functionality of the integrated cellular, physiological and biochemical components of the visual system. The results indicated that in rainbow trout optomotor responses start at 10 days post‐hatch, and demonstrated for the first time that increases in acuity, sensitivity to low light as well as in motion detection abilities occur from this stage until exogenous feeding starts. The structure of retinal cells such as cone ellipsoids increased in length as photopic visual acuity improved, and rod densities increased concurrently with improvements in scotopic thresholds (2·2 log10 units). An increase in the concentrations of the chromophore all‐trans‐retinal correlated with improvements of all behavioural measures of visual function during the same developmental phase.  相似文献

Previous studies have suggested that the waveform of the insect electroretinogram could be interpreted as giving evidence for independent photopic and scotopic mechanisms in the retina (retinal duality). The present study reports the results of four types of experiments designed to test for such duality. These included: (1) testing for a ‘Purkinje shift’ in the response to high flicker frequencies, (2) constructing retinal potential vs. stimulus energy plots, (3) testing for discontinuities in the response of visual interneurons to change in the energy level of photostimulation, and (4) an examination of the retinal responses of pharate adults. All of the experiments produced results consistent with the concept of retinal duality, for example, a ‘Purkinje shift’ of about 77 nm was measured.A theoretical model of the insect eye based upon such duality is developed which quantitatively approximates the transfer function of the response to flicker, in both waveform and amplitude.  相似文献

In vertebrates with complex, biphasic, life cycles, larvae have a distinct morphology and ecological preferences compared to metamorphosed juveniles and adults. In amphibians, abrupt and rapid metamorphic changes transform aquatic larvae to terrestrial juveniles. The main aim of this study is to test whether, relative to larval stages, metamorphosis (1) resets the pattern of variation between ontogenetic stages and species, (2) constrains intraspecific morphological variability, and (3) similar to the “hour‐glass” model reduces morphological disparity. We explore postembryonic ontogenetic trajectories of head shape (from hatching to completed metamorphosis) of two well‐defined, morphologically distinct Triturus newts species and their F1 hybrids. Variation in head shape is quantified and compared on two levels: dynamic (across ontogenetic stages) and static (at a particular stage). Our results show that the ontogenetic trajectories diverge early during development and continue to diverge throughout larval stages and metamorphosis. The high within‐group variance and the largest disparity level (between‐group variance) characterize the metamorphosed stage. Hence, our results indicate that metamorphosis does not canalize head shape variation generated during larval development and that metamorphosed phenotype is not more constrained relative to larval ones. Therefore, metamorphosis cannot be regarded as a developmental constraint, at least not for salamander head shape.  相似文献

Summary Spectral sensitivity of the cichlid fishHaplochromis burtoni was measured under both scotopic and photopic conditions using a two-choice, food reward, operant conditioning paradigm. The highest absolute sensitivity (scotopic) is one quantum for every 5 to 50 rods measured at 475 nm (equivalent to a corneal irradiance of 3.8×106 Q s–1 cm–2). A P5001 photopigment apparently mediates spectral sensitivity over most of the visible spectrum; microspectrophotometric studies of rods had previously shown them to contain this photopigment. However, the scotopic behavioral action spectrum shows a sensitivity to short wavelength light higher than is consistent with a P5001 photopigment alone mediating the scotopic visual process. Determinations made under photopic conditions reveal a behavioral action spectrum broader than that found under scotopic conditions and consistent with mediation by interaction of the three known cone types in an opponent processing manner. The calculated photopic threshold value of approximately 104 Q s–1 (receptor)–1 is in agreement with results from other species and corresponds to a corneal irradiance of about 7×1010Q s–1cm–2.  相似文献

Development of the visual and mechanosensory systems of Atlantic croaker larvae was examined and compared to behavioural performance in order to determine sensory system functionality. Early larvae were characterized by a photopic visual system with a high density of cone photoreceptors, but no rods or photoreceptor summation on to higher order cells. Acuity of small larvae was comparable to other species. The mechanosensory system of early larvae consisted of a relatively high density of free neuromasts on the head and body. By approximately 10 mm total length ( L T), many sensory attributes of larvae had changed. Visual acuity had improved to levels slightly better than in other species. Rods began forming and summation ratios increased, indicating development of scotopic vision. Cephalic lateral-line canals began to enclose at 15 mm L T and were complete by 24 mm. The trunk lateral-line began to enclose at 30 mm and was complete by 40 mm. Behavioural performance was tested using an artificial predatory stimulus under different conditions to isolate the roles of vision and mechanoreception. Both sensory systems were necessary to elicit the highest levels of responsiveness. Responsiveness of larvae <6mm was equally influenced by visual and neuromast input, while responsiveness of larvae > 6 mm was largely influenced by visual input. Both vision and mechanoreception influenced ontogenetic changes in reactive distance of larvae. When there was no visual input, reactive distances increased slightly through ontogeny, indicating the use of mechanoreception. Only when mechanoreception was blocked, the ontogenetic increase in reactive distances was greater than that of larvae with all sensory systems intact. These results indicate that Atlantic croaker larvae use both sensory systems throughout the larval period, but the relative importance of these sensory systems changes with ontogeny.  相似文献

Earlier studies yielded conflicting conclusions on the types of photoreceptors and photopigments found in the eyes of nocturnal prosimians. In this investigation a noninvasive electrophysiological procedure, electroretinogram flicker photometry, was employed to measure scotopic and photopic spectral sensitivity in the thick-tailed bushbaby (Otolemur crassicaudatus). The scotopic spectral sensitivity function of the bushbaby has a peak of about 507 nm. Under photopic test conditions, spectral sensitivity shifts toward the longer wavelengths. The results from a series of adaptation experiments indicate that the cones of the bushbaby retina contain only a single type of cone photopigment (peak sensitivity at about 545 nm). One implication from this result is that these animals do not have color vision. The photopigment arrangement of the bushbaby is different from that earlier found in diurnal and crepuscular prosimians but is similar to that of the owl monkey, the only nocturnal simian. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The F - log I curve for threshold response to visual flicker has been determined for the crayfish Cambarus bartoni. As predicted on the basis of the higher curvature of the optic surface, the flicker response contour is more asymmetrical than for bee and dragonfly nymph under comparable conditions of temperature and light time fraction of flash cycle. The mechanical origin of this asymmetry is thus confirmed, and is further supported by the similar forms of the F - log I curves in bee, dragonfly larva, and crayfish in the lower portion of the curves (up to F = 70 per cent Fmax.). The slope of the fundamental curve for crayfish, deduced by analysis of the data, is lower than for bee, dragonfly nymph, or Asellus. This signifies a wider spread of the effective distribution of elemental log I thresholds involvable in the response to flicker, and may be traced either to the greater curvature of the eye-surfaces or to their position upon movable pedicles. The results are therefore consistent with the statistical conception of the nature of effects recognizable as due to the activity of excitable elements.  相似文献

This study evaluated feeding patterns and ontogenetic variations in a non-native fish species (Plagioscion squamosissimus) in an isolated lake in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. Quarterly samplings were performed from April 2005 to February 2006 using plankton nets to capture larvae, seining nets for juveniles, and gill nets and trammel for adults. Stomach contents (n = 378) were examined according to the volumetric method in which the volume of each food item was estimated using graduated test tubes or a glass counting plate. During early development (larval stage), P. squamosissimus consumed mainly Cladocera and Copepoda. Juveniles showed a more diverse diet, including shrimp (Macrobrachium amazonicum), fish, aquatic insects (Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, Chironomidae and pupae of Diptera) and plants. It was notable the high proportion of cannibalism (23.3%) in this stage. Adults consumed predominantly shrimp and fish. The use of food resources varied significantly between development stages (ANOSIM; r = 0.458; p<0.005), showing changes in food preferences during ontogeny. The Similarity Percentage Analysis (SIMPER) indicated that Cladocera and Copepoda were responsible for the differences observed between the larval stages of pre-flexion, flexion and post-flexion. M. amazonicum and Chironomidae were responsible for the differences between juvenile and larval stages, while M. amazonicum and other fishes caused the differences between adults and other ontogenetic stages. These results are confirmed by the relationship between standard length and developmental periods (ANCOVA; r2 = 0.94; p<0.0001). In general, there were low values of trophic niche breadth. The essentially carnivorous habit from the early stages of P. squamosissimus and the predominant use of M. amazonicum by adults have important roles in feeding patterns of the species, suggesting a major contribution to its success and establishment, especially in lentic environments.  相似文献

We previously reported that aged mice lacking complement factor H (CFH) exhibit visual defects and structural changes in the retina. However, it is not known whether this phenotype is age-related or is the consequence of disturbed development. To address this question we investigated the effect of Cfh gene deletion on the retinal phenotype of young and mid-age mice. Cfh −/− mouse eyes exhibited thickening of the retina and reduced nuclear density, but relatively normal scotopic and photopic electroretinograms. At 12 months there was evidence of subtle astroglial activation in the Cfh −/− eyes, and significant elevation of the complement regulator, decay-accelerating factor (DAF) in Müller cells. In the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) of young control and Cfh −/− animals mitochondria and melanosomes were oriented basally and apically respectively, whereas the apical positioning of melanosomes was significantly perturbed in the mid-age Cfh −/− RPE. We conclude that deletion of Cfh in the mouse leads to defects in the retina that precede any marked loss of visual function, but which become progressively more marked as the animals age. These observations are consistent with a lifelong role for CFH in retinal homeostasis.  相似文献

All ontogenetic stages of a life cycle are exposed to environmental conditions so that population persistence depends on the performance of both adults and offspring. Most studies analysing the influence of abiotic conditions on species performance have focussed on adults, while studies covering early life-history stages remain rare. We investigated the responses of early stages of two widely introduced ascidians, Styela plicata and Microcosmus squamiger, to different abiotic conditions. Stressors mimicked conditions in the habitats where both species can be found in their distributional ranges and responses were related to the selection potential of their populations by analysing their genetic diversity. Four developmental stages (egg fertilisation, larval development, settlement, metamorphosis) were studied after exposure to high temperature (30°C), low salinities (26 and 22‰) and high copper concentrations (25, 50 and 100 µg/L). Although most stressors effectively led to failure of complete development (fertilisation through metamorphosis), fertilisation and larval development were the most sensitive stages. All the studied stressors affected the development of both species, though responses differed with stage and stressor. S. plicata was overall more resistant to copper, and some stages of M. squamiger to low salinities. No relationship was found between parental genetic composition and responses to stressors. We conclude that successful development can be prevented at several life-history stages, and therefore, it is essential to consider multiple stages when assessing species'' abilities to tolerate stress. Moreover, we found that early development of these species cannot be completed under conditions prevailing where adults live. These populations must therefore recruit from elsewhere or reproduce during temporal windows of more benign conditions. Alternatively, novel strategies or behaviours that increase overall reproductive success might be responsible for ensuring population survival.  相似文献

Lizards occupy both scotopic (light-limited) and photopic (light-rich) environments, thereby making this clade ideal for analyses of eye morphology adaptations. This study examines how in lizards the morphology of the eye varies according to activity in these different light environments. Measurements were collected on corneal diameters and axial lengths of the eye for 239 specimens of 116 lizard species (including Sphenodon) that include both species with scotopic and photopic visual adaptations. I show that the light level available to a lizard for vision has a significant effect on eye shape and size. Scotopic lizards have eye shapes that are optimized for visual sensitivity, with larger corneal diameters relative to axial lengths. However, photopic lizards do not exhibit absolutely larger axial lengths than do scotopic lizards, and the groups have the same absolute axial lengths of the eye. Results also indicate that the light level the lizard functions under is a more significant influence on eye shape, as defined by the relationship between corneal diameter and axial length of the eye, than is phylogeny.  相似文献

Ontogeny of osmoregulation and salinity tolerance were investigated throughout the larval development of two congeneric species of sesarmid crab, Armases ricordi (H. Milne Edwards) and A. roberti (H. Milne Edwards), and compared with previous observations from two further congeners, A. miersii (Rathbun) and A. angustipes (Dana). In the semiterrestrial coastal species A. ricordi, the zoeal stages were only at moderately reduced salinities (17-25.5‰) capable of hyper-osmoregulation, being osmoconformers at higher concentrations. The megalopa was the first ontogenetic stage of this species, which exhibited significant hyper-osmoregulation at further reduced salinities (≥ 5‰), as well as a moderately developed function of hypo-regulation at high concentrations (32-44‰). The riverine species A. roberti showed similar overall patterns in the ontogeny of osmoregulation, however, also some striking differences. In particular, its first zoeal stage showed already at hatching a strong capability of hyper-osmoregulation in salinities down to 5‰. Interestingly, this early expressed function became significantly weaker in the subsequent zoeal stages, where survival and capabilities of hyper-osmoregulation were observed only at salinities down to 10‰. The function of hyper-regulation in strongly dilute media re-appeared later, in the megalopa stage, which tolerated even an exposure to freshwater (0.2‰). Differential species- and stage-specific patterns of osmoregulation were compared with contrasting life styles, reproductive behaviours, and life-history strategies. In A. ricordi, the larvae are released into coastal marine waters, where salinities are high, and thus, no strong hyper-osmoregulation is needed throughout the zoeal phase. The megalopa stage of this species, by contrast, may invade brackish mangrove habitats, where osmoregulatory capabilities are required. Strong hyper-osmoregulation occurring in both the initial and final larval stages (but not in the intermediate zoeal stages) of A. roberti correspond to patterns of ontogenetic migration in this species, including hatching in freshwater, larval downstream transport, later zoeal development in estuarine waters, and final re-immigration of megalopae and juvenile crabs into limnic habitats, where the conspecific adults live. Similar developmental changes in the ecology and physiology of early life-history stages seem to occur also in A. angustipes. A. miersii differs from all other species, showing an early expression and a gradual subsequent increase of the function of hyper-osmoregulation. This ontogenetic pattern corresponds with an unusual reproductive biology of this species, which breeds in supratidal (i.e. land-locked) rock pools, where variations in salinity are high and unpredictable. Matching patterns in the ontogeny of osmoregulation and life-history strategies indicate a crucial adaptive role of osmoregulation for invasions of (by origin marine) crabs into brackish, limnic and terrestrial environments.  相似文献

The development and survival of female Neoceratitis cyanescens (Bezzi) (Diptera: Tephritidae) from egg to complete ovarian maturation were studied in the laboratory at five different constant temperatures: 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C. The aim of this study was to get information on the influence of temperature on pre-mature stages, as a prerequisite to optimise rearing procedures and to understand temporal and geographical patterns of fruit fly occurrence. The developmental rate of the different life stages increased linearly with increasing temperatures up to 30 °C. The fastest development of pre-mature stages was recorded at 30 °C (22±1 days) and the slowest at 15 °C (98±3 days). The day-degrees requirements (K) to complete total development were 432.6 day-degrees. Lower temperature thresholds were 11.4, 11.9, 10.0, and 11.1 °C for egg, larval, pupal stages and ovarian maturation, respectively. The number of adults obtained from an initial batch of 100 eggs reached a maximum (64) at 25 °C. At 35 °C, no adults emerged. Larval developmental time was significantly shorter in green tomato fruits than in potato tubers at 15, 20, and 25 °C. Mortality rate of larvae was higher in green tomato fruits than in potato tubers at 25 and 30 °C.  相似文献

The larval development of the squat lobster Munida subrugosa from subantarctic waters of the Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina) was studied under controlled laboratory conditions of temperature, salinity, and food supply. Developmental times, survival, and growth of larvae and early juveniles were investigated. Hatching of the entire brood always occurred during one night. Larvae were kept in 100ml individual bowls with filtered seawater at 8 ± 0.5°C and fed with Artemia spp. nauplii three times a week. Larvae passed through 6 zoeal instars and one megalopa. Previously, only five zoeal instars were known from this species. Mean cumulative durations of the zoeal stages I to VI were: 20.5 ± 2.5, 33.9 ± 4.1, 43.3 ± 5.4, 52.6 ± 5, 61.2 ± 3.9, and 83days, respectively. By adding the 28days that a single megalopa took to metamorphose to crab I stage, the complete larval development lasted 111days. Highest mortality occurred prior to the moult from the zoea I to zoea II stage (79.21% ± 18.65%) and during the moult from zoea VI to megalopa (92.86%). Carapace length was 1.64 ± 0.06, 1.52 ± 0.16, 1.57 ± 0.26, 1.64 ± 0.21, 2.11 ± 0.35, and 2.58 ± 0.19mm, for zoeal stages I to VI, respectively. Carapace length of megalopae and crab I instars was similar (2.85 ± 0.28 and the 2.84 ± 0.05, respectively). Unlike other subantarctic decapods, which show a tendency towards abbreviated larval development and/or some degree of endotrophy, M. subrugosa shows an extended planktotrophic larval development synchronized with short seasonal plankton production in austral summers.  相似文献

The effect of light and dark adaptation on the electrical activity in two species of nocturnal gecko, Hemidactylus turcicus and Tarentola mauritanica was studied. The electroretinogram of both species changes from the scotopic type in the dark-adapted state to the photopic type after strong light adaptation. For the scotopic response fusion frequencies up to 18 flashes per sec. are obtained in both species. For the photopic response fusion frequencies up to 50 flashes per sec. are seen in Tarentola, and up to 25 flashes per sec. in Hemidactylus. Proceeding from dark to light adaptation the increment threshold (dI) is measured at different levels of adaptive illumination (I). At low levels of illumination the dI/I ratio is found to be small and at high levels of illumination to be large. No difference in the dI/I ratio is obtained for test lights of 462 and 605 mµ. During dark adaptation the change of threshold after exposure to moderate and weak lights (up to 103 times dark threshold) is rather fast. After light adaptation to strong light (106 times dark threshold) duplex dark adaptation curves are seen with a break separating a fast and a slow phase of dark adaptation. The significance of these results from a retina which possesses sense cells of only one type is discussed.  相似文献

The day and night visual capacities (photopic and scotopic spectral sensitivity) of several species of boobies (family Sulidae) were analyzed using a behavioral psychophysical testing technique. On the basis of these data there is evidence for sensitivity to near-ultraviolet light in the order Pelecaniformes. The scotopic spectral sensitivity functions of three booby species conform closely to the spectral absorption characteristics of avian rhodopsin. There are marked differences between the photopic sensitivities of a coastal booby species with that of a pelagic species; these differences appear correlated with their respective feeding ecologies. Lastly, a brief review of avian spectral sensitivity and a consideration of individual variation in avian vision studies are presented.  相似文献

Alcohol consumption among young adults is widely accepted in modern society and may be the starting point for abusive use of alcohol at later stages of life. Chronic alcohol exposure can lead to visual function impairment. In the present study, we investigated the spatial luminance contrast sensitivity, colour arrangement ability, and colour discrimination thresholds on young adults that weekly consume alcoholic beverages without clinical concerns. Twenty-four young adults were evaluated by an ophthalmologist and performed three psychophysical tests to evaluate their vision functions. We estimated the spatial luminance contrast sensitivity function at 11 spatial frequencies ranging from 0.1 to 30 cycles/degree. No difference in contrast sensitivity was observed comparing alcohol consumers and control subjects. For the evaluation of colour vision, we used the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue test (FM 100 test) to test subject’s ability to perform a colour arrangement task and the Mollon-Reffin test (MR test) to measure subject’s colour discrimination thresholds. Alcohol consumers made more mistakes than controls in the FM100 test, and their mistakes were diffusely distributed in the FM colour space without any colour axis preference. Alcohol consumers also performed worse than controls in the MR test and had higher colour discrimination thresholds compared to controls around three different reference points of a perceptually homogeneous colour space, the CIE 1976 chromaticity diagram. There was no colour axis preference in the threshold elevation observed among alcoholic subjects. Young adult weekly alcohol consumers showed subclinical colour vision losses with preservation of spatial luminance contrast sensitivity. Adolescence and young adult age are periods of important neurological development and alcohol exposure during this period of life might be responsible for deficits in visual functions, especially colour vision that is very sensitive to neurotoxicants.  相似文献
