The biological and environmental factors affecting survival off-the-host of Otodectes cynotis (Acari: Psoroptidae) ear mites were investigated under natural and laboratory conditions. From November 2000 to November 2002 mites were collected monthly from cats and divided into four groups according to sex and stage. In laboratory conditions, the mites were placed in an incubator with a steady 95% relative humidity (r.h.), at 10 °C. All the plates were examined by stereomicroscopy every 24 h until all the mites had died. The data were analysed statistically by multiple linear regression and survival analysis. At 10 °C, the maximum survival time of mites was between 15 and 17 days, while at 34 °C, it was between 5 and 6 days. The maximum survival time of adult females was significantly longer than that of other stages. No differences were observed in maximum survival times of mites that had been offered food and those that had not, or in the time (in days) to reach 50% mortality (LT50). When exposed to environmental conditions, the maximum survival time (12 days) was observed at temperatures ranging from 12.3 to 14.2 °C and r.h.s between 57.6 and 82.9%. Multiple regression analysis showed that temperature alone influenced the maximum survival time and LT50 of mites, and that the rate of survival declined linearly with increasing mean temperature. This basic understanding of off-host survival suggests that, places which have been inhabited by infected animals may need to be disinfected or remain vacated for at least 12 days before occupancy by clean cats or dogs. Although Amblyomma brasiliense Aragão 1908 has been reported as one of the most aggressive ticks to humans in Brazil, information about the biology of this tick species is virtually inexistent. This work reports data on the life cycle of A. brasiliense fed on rabbits and pigs and maintained in an incubator at 20°C, 90% RH and 12 h of light for off-host development. Tick yield of adult females fed on pigs and rabbits was 81.2% and 58.3%, respectively. Females fed on pigs had mean engorgement weight of 862.3 mg and egg mass of 208 mg, while females fed on rabbits had mean engorgement weight of 606.1 mg and egg mass of 160 mg; these values did not differ statistically between host species. Feeding period of female ticks fed on pigs (10 days) was significantly shorter than that on rabbits (17 days). Mean preoviposition period was slightly longer (35.9 days) for ticks fed on pigs than on rabbits (30 days). The minimum incubation period of eggs of ticks from both host species was similar and over 100 days. Egg production efficiency was low for females fed on both hosts (less than 30% and 20% for ticks from pigs and rabbits, respectively). More than 55% of larvae and 79% of nymphs fed on rabbits, set free inside the feeding chambers, engorged successfully. These ticks attained an engorgement weight of 1.3 and 18.2 mg, respectively, and fed for approximately 5 days. The minimum pre-molt period was 30 days for engorged larvae and over 44 days for nymphs. Molting success was low, less than 50% in the case of larvae and less than 20% for nymphs. Further studies are required to better determine the off-host requirements of this tick species.  相似文献

Reproduction, survival, and life table parameters of the predatory mite Cheyletus malaccensis Oudemans were evaluated at six constant temperatures: 17.5, 20, 25, 30, 32.5 and 35°C, feeding on Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank). Preoviposition period of fertilized and virgin females varied with temperature from ca. 9 days at 17.5°C to ca. 1.5 day at 32.5°C and then increased to ca. 3 days at 35°C. Virgin female oviposition period was significantly shorter than for fertilized females at the temperatures examined with the exception of 17.5°C. The mean total number of eggs per fertilized (169.7 ± 6.6) and virgin female (60.7 ± 4.3) was highest at the temperature of 30°C. The data indicated a significant positive and nearly doubling effect of fertilization on female fecundity at the temperatures examined with the exception of 17.5°C. Age-specific fecundity was described by a temperature dependent model from which the maximum daily fecundity rate was estimated for fertilized and virgin females at 10.3 (at 30°C) and 6.8 (at 32.5°C) eggs/female, respectively. Virgin female longevity was significantly shorter than for fertilized females at 20, 30 and 32.5°C, and decreased from ca. 57 days at 17.5°C to ca. 17 days at 35°C. The Weibull function that was used to describe the age specific survival of fertilized and virgin females produced excellent fits to the survival data. Estimates of intrinsic rate of increase, net reproductive rate, mean generation time, doubling time and finite rate of increase, were obtained. The rm value increased with temperature from 0.03 (day−1) at 17.5°C to 0.21 (day−1) at 32.5°C, after which it decreased to 0.15 (day−1) at 35°C. These data indicate that C. malaccensis can reproduce at temperatures between 17.5 and 35°C and can be used for biological control of astigmatid mites within the temperature range where the pest occurs.  相似文献

Numerically equal groups of between five and ten young Merino and Dorper sheep were artificially infested with sheep scab mites, Psoroptes ovis. Separate groups of sheep were infested during the early winter of two successive years as well as during the early summer of the second year. Lesion growth was measured at two-weekly intervals for a period of six weeks during the first winter and for eight weeks during the second winter and in the summer. The rate of lesion growth and mean lesion size on Merino sheep was significantly greater than that on Dorper sheep at each two-weekly recording during the winter of both years. The rate of growth of the lesions did not differ significantly between the two sheep breeds during summer, although, with the exception of eight weeks post-infestation, the mean lesion size on Merino sheep was significantly larger than that on Dorper sheep at each assessment. Studies on the reproduction, longevity and life table parameters of Iphiseius degenerans (Berlese) were carried out under laboratory conditions of 25 ± 1 °C, 75 ± 5% RH and 16L:8D h. As food sources for the predatory mite, Ricinus communis L. pollen, all stages of the spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) larvae, and Ephestia kuehniella Zeller eggs were selected. All diets were accepted as food by the adult mites. Female longevity ranged from 29.5 to 42.4 days, the highest value was recorded on a diet of Ephestia eggs. The highest percentage of females escaping the experimental arena was observed on the diet consisting of thrips larvae. The highest oviposition rate (1.9 eggs/female.day) was recorded when the predator was fed on spider mites on an artificial substrate. For other diets, oviposition rates ranged from 1.0 to 1.3 eggs/female.day. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) of I. degenerans varied between 0.015 and 0.142 females/female.day. The diet consisting of castor bean pollen resulted in the highest population growth whereas the diet on spider mites brushed off onto a bean leaf arena resulted in the slowest population growth. This can be explained by the inability of the predator to cope with the webbing of T. urticae, and the high escape rate of the progeny when reared on spider mites. Cattle sucking lice, Linognathus vituli (L.) (Phthiraptera: Linognathidae), were obtained from naturally infected cattle and maintained within ‘arenas’ affixed to the backs of cattle confined in controlled environment chambers maintained at a constant temperature of 15 °C. Temperatures measured within the arenas at an ambient temperature of 15 °C were constant at about 34 °C and only slightly above the temperature on nearby skin. The effect of temperature on egg development was determined using a gradient of temperatures between 25 °C and 41 °C. Eggs did not develop at temperatures of < 26 °C or > 39 °C. Survival of eggs was highest at temperatures of 30 °C and 35 °C. The earliest hatch was observed at 5 days post‐oviposition (at 33–35 °C). Development was extended to as long as 13 days at the lower temperatures. Kaplan–Meier survival probabilities were compared for lice kept at two densities in the arenas and showed there to be no effect of density on louse survival. Similarly, the mean number of eggs/louse/day over an 8‐day period was not influenced by louse density.  相似文献

The effect of fungal infection on the reproductive potential of two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, was evaluated as part of the full biocontrol potential of three entomopathogenic fungi by modeling of fecundity probability. Female mites (≤2-day-old) on leaves were exposed to the sprays of Beauveria bassiana, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus and Metarhizium anisopliae at the concentrations of 1.13 × 103, 1.55 × 103 and 0.95 × 103 deposited conidia mm−2 and then individually reared at 25°C and 12:12 L:D for oviposition. Mite mortalities 10 days after spraying were 73.1, 75.4 and 67.9% in the fungal treatments versus 15.5% in control. On average, females infected by the three fungal species survived 5.8, 6.2 and 6.3 days, and laid 3.1, 4.0 and 4.0 eggs per capita, respectively. These were 3–4 fold lower than the control fecundity at 12.3. The cumulative probabilities [P(m ≤ N)] for the counts of infected and non-infected (control) females laying m eggs per capita (m ≤ N) during 10 days fit very well the equation P(m ≤ N) = 1/[1 + exp(a + bm)] (r 2 ≥ 0.98), yielding a solution to the probability for the female mites to achieve a specific fecundity {P(m ≤ N)−P[m ≤ (N − 1)]}. Consequently, the infected mites had 71–78% chance to lay ≤5 eggs per capita but only 5–8% to deposit >10 eggs despite some variation among the tested fungi. In contrast, the chances for the non-infected mites to achieve the low and high fecundities were 23 and 55%. The fitted probabilities provide a full coverage of the fecundity potential of infected versus non-infected mites and are more informative than the mean fecundities.  相似文献

Out of the 2 important physical factors like temperature and relative humidity, the former plays significant role in affecting the survival of adults and development of immature stages ofCheiloneurus pyrillae Mani which is an important egg parasitoid of the sugarcane leaf hopper (Pyrilla perpusilla Walker) in India. Average longevity of males and females of this parasitoid decreased from 2.47 to 0.81 days and from 4.95 to 0.84 days, respectively when the test temperature was increased from 15 to 35±1.5°C. Similarly, its mean developmental period was found to reduce from a maximum of 45.87 to a minimum of 10.12 days when the rearing temperature was increased from 15 to 30±1.5°C. The parasitoid could not be reared at or above 32.5±1.5°C because its immature stages failed to withstand this temperature. These informations will be helpful in maintaining the mass culture ofC. pyrillae in the laboratory.  相似文献

Using incorporated devices, Tetranychus urticae spider mites were rinsed from hydroponically-grown lima bean plants, collected, separated and blow-dried. This yielded a reliable and large volume of eggs and larvae, which were fed to Amblyseius womersleyi rearings on 15×5cm2 polyethylene arenas. Of several feeding regimes tested, daily feeding of 10mg T. urticae eggs and larvae resulted in the highest predator population levels. The best harvest period was between 15 and 27 days, when predator density exceeded 600 mites per arena. A preliminary automatic mass-rearing device was tested for A. womersleyi. This incorporated both rearing and harvesting procedures. A micro-feeder was developed to supply the required volume of spider mites and maize pollen (1:1 mixture) to the predators. A Bakelite rearing arena reduced the space requirements of a polyethylene arena, was more durable and an essential component in the automatic mass-rearing and harvesting. Mite harvesting is carried out through the use of a vacuum-head harvester. Supplements of (sterilized) spider mites, pollen, vermiculite and wheat bran are automatically added to the predators. The devices for harvesting, filling and packing are incorporated and synchronized and the entire system is controlled by a single slide-switch. The design and system can be expanded without changing the basic processes and program, for example to adopt it for other species of predaceous mites.  相似文献

Activity and survival of adult female Blatta orientalis was investigated using tagged cockroaches in periodically illuminated arenas (LD 12:12 h) with a harbourage at one end. The arenas were rectangular with a width of 50 cm and lengths up to 480 cm. A cypermethrin-treated plywood plate (50 × 11 cm) substrate across the harbourage access points caused cockroaches to be exposed to the insecticide deposit by tarsal contact as they entered or left the harbourage. The effects of varying arena length and cypermethrin concentration were tested at 28°C. The LC50 following 3 days exposure ranged from 5.7 to 11.8 mg/m2 on the plywood plate for arena lengths of 60 to 480 cm, respectively; cypermethrin at 30 mg/m2 produced 100% knockdown of B. orientalis within one 12 h dark period.
During darkness, active cockroaches spent most time close to the harbourage or around food and water stations, at the far end of the arena, and made frequent returns into the harbourage. For arena length 120 cm, the mean duration of contact with treated plates during the first hour of the dark period was significantly less than contact time on untreated plates, but during 12 h the cumulative contact times were not significantly different between treated and untreated plates. During the first 4 h of the dark period, mean cockroach numbers on the treated plate declined as arena length increased, but not as rapidly as the mean number/unit area over the rest of the arena. The arena design is considered suitable for comparative testing of fast-acting neuroactive insecticide deposits against cockroaches.  相似文献

Amblyseius barkeri (Hughes) fed onThrips tabaci (Lind.) at 25°C showed an average duration of 2.2, 0.8 and 3.2 days for the egg, larval and nymphal stages, with mortalities at 1.0, 1.0 and 3.1%, respectively. Females represented 63% of the population and required multiple matings for optimal fertility. The oviposition period was 20.3 days and the average oviposition rate 2.3 eggs per day. The intrinsic rate of increase was 0.22 per day. The expected life span was 29.6 days for ♀♀ and 27.4 days for ♂♂.A. barkeri ♂♂ and ♀♀ both consumed 3.3 nymphs of thrips per day (mean value for the feeding stages). The larva does not take up food. In the absence of thripsA. barkeri was able to consume two-spotted spider mites,Tetranychus urticae (Koch), and their eggs, adult broad mites,Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks), and pollen of various plants. Cannibalism was observed when food was lacking. Certain morphological features, egglaying, mating and predatory behaviour are described.   相似文献

Humidification can suppress water loss from an organism and has great potential for improving the cold storage of short‐lived arthropods, such as predatory mites. The effectiveness of humidity‐controlled cold storage was recently verified for Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) females but was not examined for males. Combining both males and females in one storage protocol might increase the predator population because it would enhance the opportunity for multiple mating, which is necessary for females to maximize their egg production. Newly emerged adult males were stored at an air temperature of 5°C and relative humidity (RH) of 100% or 80%. The median survival time (LT50) was 32 days at 100% RH and 14 days at 80% RH; the survival curves differed significantly. Males stored at 100% RH for 0, 10, 20 and 30 days were introduced to virgin females for mating at 25°C to evaluate their reproductive ability. The pre‐oviposition period was significantly prolonged in the females mated with males stored for ≥20 days. No negative effects of storage were observed on the oviposition period, total number of eggs or net reproduction rate (R0) in the females mated with males stored for ≤20 days or on the mean generation time (T) for those stored for 30 days. A slight decrease in the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was observed in the females mated with males stored for ≥20 days. Our storage method can preserve N. californicus males for 20 days with only a minor reduction in their survival and reproductive ability.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the development of immature stages of the predator Cheyletus malaccensis Oudemans, produced by either fertilized or virgin females, was studied at 17.5, 20, 25, 30, 32.5, and 35°C, 80 ± 5% relative humidity, in complete darkness, and fed Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank). The population maintained at 15°C failed to reproduce. The thermal data obtained were used for the estimation of the thermal requirements (developmental thresholds, thermal constant, optimum temperature) of this predator by a linear and nonlinear model (Logan type I model). Upper and lower developmental thresholds ranged between 37.4–37.8 and 11.6–12.0°C, respectively. Optimum temperature for development was estimated at between 33.1 and 33.5°C. The thermal constant ranged between 238.1 and 312.5 degree-days. Based on the data of the total pre-imaginal period, immatures’ survival peaked at 25°C. Arrhenotokous parthenogenesis (haplodiploidy) is confirmed in the species: virgin females always produce males, whereas fertilized females give rise to offspring of both sexes. Survival of the immature stages and offspring sex ratio were not significantly influenced by temperature.  相似文献

A commercial strain of Neoseiulus californicus (Spical®) has a conspicuously long postoviposition period in comparison with other strains of N. californicus or other phytoseiid mites. In many insects and mites, life span is shorter for multiple-mated females than for single-mated females, and is shorter under poor prey conditions than under ample prey conditions. We previously showed that the postoviposition period of multiple-mated females was 40% shorter than that of single-mated females, but that it was never shorter than 30 days. Here we focused on the effect of prey abundance on the postoviposition period. We examined three groups of multiple-mated females: mites that were fed ample prey (group I), mites that were subjected to repeated cycles of 2 days of fasting followed by 2 days of ample prey (group II), and mites that were subjected to repeated cycles of 4 days of fasting followed by 2 days of ample prey (group III). The postoviposition periods of groups II and III were 90% shorter than that of group I. Also the total adult longevity was significantly shorter in groups II and III than in group I. Total egg production in group III was about half that in groups I and II, although the oviposition periods in groups II and III were significantly longer than that in group I. These results suggest that the prolonged postoviposition period in single-mated females of the Spical strain may only appear under laboratory conditions, without multiple mating or starvation.  相似文献

The effect of five constant temperatures (16, 22, 26, 31 and 36°C) on biological (survival and duration of developmental stages, fecundity and longevity of females, sex-ratio) and demographic parameters (R o , G, r m and λ) of the two main phytophagous mites that attack cassava in Africa,Mononychellus progresivus Doreste andOligonychus gossypii (Zacher), was studied in the laboratory. Experiments were performed simultaneously on the two mite species reared on the same cassava variety (1M20) under controlled conditions: 70±10% r.h. and 12L∶12D. The lower thermal threshold was 13°C forM. progresivus and 11°C forO. gossypii. Both species developed in the range from 22 to 36°C. The shortest development time was obtained at 31°C for both species; it was 7.2 days forM. progresivus and 8.2 days forO. gossypii. Maximum fecundity of both species was recorded at 26°C with 42.1 eggs forM. progresivus and 36.3 eggs forO. gossypii The highest intrinsic rate of increase (r m ) was obtained at 31°C for both species with 0.289 and 0.214 forM. progresivus andO. gossypii, respectively.  相似文献

Although several generalist species of Pergalumna are known to be nematode predators, the potential of oribatid mites as natural enemies of phytonematodes has been underestimated. The objective of this work was to estimate the consumption rate of a Pergalumna sp. when feeding on two major pest nematodes, Meloidogyne javanica and Pratylenchus coffeae, under laboratory conditions. A new method was used, in which live nematodes are offered to mites and subsequently consumption is quantified based on the sclerotized, well preserved structures in the mite's fecal pellets. The assay was evaluated during 5 days, at 25 degrees C and 96% relative humidity, with three replicates for each nematode species. Every replicate consisted of a group of four mites isolated in an arena, to which 400 nematodes were transferred daily. The daily produced fecal pellets were mounted in Hoyer's medium for examination under a microscope. The nematode buccal stylets and cephalic frameworks were counted to estimate the number of nematodes consumed. It was estimated that a single mite daily ingested 18.3 +/- 0.8 (mean +/- SE) M. javanica (J(2) juveniles) or 41.6 +/- 7.2 P. coffeae (juveniles + adults), the maximal daily consumption being 34 M. javanica and 73 P. coffeae. The method showed to be practical, precise and suitable for laboratory studies in which nematophagous mites classified as engulfers are included.  相似文献

Movements of the parasitic honey bee mite,Varroa jacobsoni (Oud.) were monitored in several assays as they moved among adult host honey bees,Apis mellifera. We examined the propensity of mites to leave their hosts and to move onto new bee hosts. We also examined their preference for bees of different age and hive function. Mites were standardized by selecting mites from newly emerged worker bees (NEWs). In closed jars, 50% ofVarroa left NEWs irreversibly when no physical path was present for the mites to return to the NEWs; about 90% of mites left newly emerged drones in identical assays. In petri dish arenas, mites were rarely seen off NEW hosts when monitored at 15-min intervals for 4 h; this was the case for single NEWs with one mite (NEWs+) and when a NEW+ and a NEW− (no mites) were placed together in a petri dish. When a NEW+ was held with either a nurse beeor a pollen forager, 25% of the mites moved to the older bees. When both a nurseand a pollen forager were placed in a petri dish with a NEW+, about 50% of the mites transferred to older bees; nurse bees received about 80% of these mites, whereas pollen foragers received significantly fewer mites (about 20%,P < 0.05). Most mite transfers occurred during the first 30 min after combining NEWs+ and test bees. When NEWs+ were combined with bees of known ages, rather than function, mites transferred more often to young bees than to older bees (1- and 5-day-old bees vs. 25-day-old bees,P < 0.05; 1-day-old vs. 13- and 25-day-old bees;P < 0.05). No differences in proportions of transferring mites were seen when the range of bee ages was ≤ 8 days (P > 0.05), implying that the factors mediating the mites’ adult-host preference change gradually with bee age. A possible chemical basis for host choice byVarroa is indicated by their greater propensity to move onto freezer-killed nurse bees than onto freezer-killed pollen foragers (P < 0.05) and by their lower movement onto heat-treated bees than onto control bees (P < 0.05). Bee age, hive function, and directional changes in cuticular chemistry are all correlated. Movements of newly emerged mites in relation to these variables may provide insights into their reproductive success inApis mellifera colonies.  相似文献

Nine microsatellite markers have been isolated from the scab mite, Psoroptes ovis. These markers have been tested for polymorphism in individual Psoroptes mites originating from two hosts, the European rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus, and sheep, Ovis aries. No definitive picture of Psoroptes species’ status or interrelationships exists. This study provides the basis for a new molecular system to elucidate the systematics of groupings within the genus Psoroptes, allowing us to clarify the population dynamics and epidemiology of the mites causing sheep scab world wide.  相似文献

Behavioural responses were studied in mated and unmated females of a Dutch strain of the spider mite Tetranychus urticae which were destined to enter diapause. Observations were confined to the period between acquirement of the winter coloration by the females (a few days after the last moult) and their entering of artificial hibernation sites offered to the mites on the host leaves. Unmated females were found to stay longer on the leaf surface than mated females; they entered the hibernation sites significantly later than mated females. The delay in the search for hibernation sites shown by unmated females may be seen as a behavioural adaptation to enhance the chance of being fertilized before hibernation. Winter survival of mated and unmated diapausing females of the same strain of mites was studied both in the laboratory at a constant temperature of 2±1°C and outdoors under natural climatic conditions in Amsterdam during the winter of 1990–1991. Survival was high under both conditions for mated as well as unmated females; no significant differences in survival were found between both types of female. Observations on post-diapause females of Tetranychus atlanticus (a mite belonging to the T. urticae complex) sampled from strawberry fields near Moscow in spring, showed that at most 10% of the females of this natural spider mite population were unmated. Both mated and unmated females had survived winter temperatures of -28 to -30°C.  相似文献
