Summary Interspecific facultative social parasitism is well known in ants and in bumble-bees, but it is rarer in wasps. This form of parasitism is traditionally considered to be an intermediate stage in the evolution of obligate interspecific parasitism, where the parasites are no longer able to nest alone. We report field and experimental observations of a newly discovered facultative parasitic relationship between two closely related free-living Polistes species: P. nimphus and P. dominulus. P. nimphus foundresses sometimes usurp the nests of the larger P. dominulus before worker emergence. The invading queen takes over the nest with abundant abdomen stroking on the nest surface and is accepted by workers if they emerge 6 or more days after usurpation. Morphometric comparisons show that the usurper species, though smaller than its victims, has morphological adaptations consisting of larger heads, mandibles and front femora relative to their body size that may give it an advantage during nest invasion. This strategy is likely to be taken only after the foundress loses her original nest because invading P. nimphus queens have lower reproductive success than they would have had on their own nest. Overall, we found that P. nimphus usurpers use strategies of invasion similar to those of two obligate parasites, suggesting that this may be an example of one of the pathways by which social parasitism evolved.Received 4 April 2003; revised 8 August 2003; accepted 14 September 2003.  相似文献

Summary Polistes paper wasp species vary in their nest site selection, with some nesting in relatively exposed areas and others in protected cavities. Locating the nest sites of cavity dwelling species in natural habitat can prove difficult, and most behavioral studies on these species are therefore conducted using human-built structures. Since Hungerford and Williams (1912) and Rau (1929) noted the location of several P. fuscatus (Fabricius) nests in rodent burrows, there have been no published accounts of ground nesting Polistes species. I report the occurrence of a large, dense cluster of P. aurifer (Saussure) nests located within cracks in the dried soil of the Santa Monica Mountains of southern California, USA.Received 8 April 2003; revised 10 October 2003; accepted 31 October 2003.  相似文献

Identifying the sex of larvae is important in social Hymenoptera. Until now for Polistes wasps it has been necessary to genotype larvae at microsatellite loci, and assign their sex based on homozygosity at these loci. In our study on the paper wasp Polistes dominulus we have found morphological differences between larval sexes that can be used for larvae from the 3rd instar on to easily and cheaply identify larval sex: the external gonopore and the shape and size of larval gonads. The robustness of these indicators was supported by genotype data at four microsatellite loci. Using gonopore and gonad features for sex assignment will assign diploid males as males, unlike techniques based on genetic loci or chromosomes. Summary Alarm pheromones, chemical substances produced by social insects to alert the colony to threat, are the principal means by which colony defence is co-ordinated. We present the results of a study on alarm behaviour in 5 swarming species of wasps belonging to the genus Ropalidia. These species show a remarkably efficient strategy of alarm communication, including visual display and attack synchronization. We show that pheromones released from the venom gland play an important role in alarm recruitment in species belonging to the Ropalidia flavopicta group, but not in Ropalidia sumatrae. We analysed the contents of the venom reservoirs content of four of the studied species by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Glands were found to contain a complex mixture of volatile compounds as well as spiroacetals of higher molecular weight. Interestingly, despite all species producing similar chemical compounds from the venom gland, these were found to elicit alarm behaviour in only those species that build nest envelopes, suggesting a link between chemical release of alarm behaviour and the evolution of nest architecture in Ropalidia wasps.Received 19 August 2003; revised 29 February 2004; accepted 10 March 2004  相似文献

Summary A field population of Polistes metricus Say near St. Louis, Missouri was supplemented with dilute Apis mellifera honey and Trichoplusia ni caterpillars during the entire colony development period. Offspring were collected at two times to coincide with emergence of worker and reproductive broods. Food supplementation had no effect on nest size, the number of worker offspring, or the size of workers. Supplemented colonies did produce more females in August but female size was unaffected by supplementation. Supplementation had no effect on the number of males produced, but males were slightly larger on supplemented nests. We interpret these findings in the context of social insect life history theory.Received 30 June 2003; revised 9 December 2003; accepted 18 December 2003.  相似文献

Summary Several studies of social insects have shown that epicuticular hydrocarbons are involved in recognition. The hypothesis is that the animals can use differences in chemical composition to acquire information about conspecific status (sex, colony, reproductive status or caste recognition). In this study, we searched for differences between the epicuticular profiles of alpha and beta co-foundresses in Polistes dominulus (Christ) colonies from three separate localities. Our aim was to identify specific compounds or sets of compounds which could be general indexes of foundress rank position in an associative foundation. We found quantitative and qualitative differences in the epicuticular profile among the three populations. The compounds that differentiate between alpha foundresses and their subordinates in the two neighbouring localities were not the same as in the third population. However, in all localities the alpha foundresses of each associative foundation presented a higher proportion of heavy compounds than their respective subordinates. Chemical differences related to rank position may be a fertility signal and are probably caused by physiological and behavioural characteristics, although it is not yet certain if they are actually used by the wasps.Received 28 November 2003; revised 22 February 2004; accepted 25 February 2004.  相似文献

The maT clade of transposons is a group of transposable elements intermediate in sequence and predicted protein structure to mariner and Tc transposons, with a distribution thus far limited to a few invertebrate species. We present evidence, based on searches of publicly available databases, that the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae has several maT-like transposons, which we have designated as CbmaT elements, dispersed throughout its genome. We also describe two additional transposon sequences that probably share their evolutionary history with the CbmaT transposons. One resembles a fold back variant of a CbmaT element, with long (380-bp) inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) that show a high degree (71%) of identity to CbmaT1. The other, which shares only the 26-bp ITR sequences with one of the CbmaT variants, is present in eight nearly identical copies, but does not have a transposase gene and may therefore be cross mobilised by a CbmaT transposase. Using PCR-based mobility assays, we show that CbmaT1 transposons are capable of excising from the C. briggsae genome. CbmaT1 excised approximately 500 times less frequently than Tcb1 in the reference strain AF16, but both CbmaT1 and Tcb1 excised at extremely high frequencies in the HK105 strain. The HK105 strain also exhibited a high frequency of spontaneous induction of unc-22 mutants, suggesting that it may be a mutator strain of C. briggsae.  相似文献

We have investigated the floral ontogeny of Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis (of the eucalypt group, Myrtaceae) using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Several critical characters for establishing relationships between these genera and to the eucalypts have been determined. The absence of compound petaline primordia in Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis excludes these taxa from the eucalypt clade. Post-anthesis circumscissile abscission of the hypanthium above the ovary in Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia is evidence that these three taxa form a monophyletic group; undifferentiated perianth parts and elongated fusiform buds are characters that unite Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis as sister taxa. No floral characters clearly associate Arillastrum with either the eucalypt clade or the clade of Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia. We gratefully acknowledge Clyde Dunlop and Bob Harwood (Northern Territory Herbarium) for collecting specimens of Allosyncarpia, and Bruce Gray (Atherton) for collecting specimens of Stockwellia. The Australian National Herbarium (CANB) kindly lent herbarium specimens of Eucalyptopsis for examination. A pea rust fungus, Uromyces viciae-fabae, has been classified into two varieties, var. viciae-fabae and var. orobi, based on differences in urediniospore wall thickness and putative host specificity in Japan. In principal component analyses, morphological features of urediniospores and teliospores of 94 rust specimens from Vicia, Lathyrus, and Pisum did not show definite host-specific morphological groups. In molecular analyses, 23 Uromyces specimens from Vicia, Lathyrus, and Pisum formed a single genetic clade based on D1/D2 and ITS regions. Four isolates of U. viciae-fabae from V. cracca and V. unijuga could infect and sporulate on P. sativum. These results suggest that U. viciae-fabae populations on different host plants are not biologically differentiated into groups that can be recognized as varieties.Contribution no. 184, Laboratory of Plant Parasitic Mycology, Institute of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Tsukuba, Japan  相似文献

Gymnopilus ombrophilus sp. nov., growing on rotten wood of conifers and hardwoods from Niigata, Japan is described and illustrated. It is characterized by its medium-sized, brownish-orange basidiocarps with a finely squamulose pileus, stipe lacking an annulus, and mild taste, and microscopically by dextrinoid, small, broadly ellipsoid basidiospores. The new species belongs to the section Microspori. The differences between the taxon and similar species are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Summary: Polistes dominulus (Christ), an old world paper wasp, was introduced accidentally into the eastern coast of the United States in the late 1970s and has been rapidly spreading westward, displacing the native P. fuscatus (F.). The biology of naturally nesting P. fuscatus and P. dominulus was compared at a field site in Rochester, Michigan. The basic methodology consisted of simultaneously videotaping spatially proximate, matched single-foundress colonies of P. fuscatus and P. dominulus (13 matched sets, 176.8 h of videography). In addition, extensive surveys and censuses were taken of colonies to record colony productivity, dates of nest initiation and first worker emergence, usurpation and parasitism.¶There was no evidence that P. dominulus is negatively impacting P. fuscatus through direct, agonistic encounters. However, P. dominulus is 4-5 times more productive than P. fuscatus, suggesting that P. dominulus is replacing P. fuscatus via exploitative competition. P. dominulus appears to have a number of advantages over P. fuscatus, including earlier production of workers, higher per capita foraging rates by queens and workers, higher queen survivorship, and lack of conspecific pressures. Nest site and/or prey availability may be limiting factors in the competition between the two species.  相似文献

Parasitic nematodes of the genus Sphaerularia are known to infect and sterilize the overwintering gynes (potential queens) of bumblebees. We found that 70% of the overwintered gynes of the hornet Vespa simillima collected using bait traps were infected and sterilized by Sphaerularia sp. This is the first solid record of parasitism by Sphaerularia in hornets (Vespa spp.). Received 22 June 2006; revised 24 October 2006; accepted 3 November 2006.  相似文献

The nucleotide sequences of ten SP11 and nine SRK alleles in Raphanus sativus were determined, and deduced amino acid sequences were compared with those of Brassica SP11 and SRK. The amino acid sequence identity of class-I SP11s in R. sativus was about 30% on average, the highest being 52.2%, while that of the S domain of class-I SRK was 77.0% on average and ranged from 70.8% to 83.9%. These values were comparable to those of SP11 and SRK in Brassica oleracea and B. rapa. SP11 of R. sativus S-21 was found to be highly similar to SP11 of B. rapa S-9 (89.5% amino acid identity), and SRK of R. sativus S-21 was similar to SRK of B. rapa S-9 (91.0%). SP11 and SRK of R. sativus S-19 were also similar to SP11 and SRK of B. oleracea S-20, respectively. These similarities of both SP11 and SRK alleles between R. sativus and Brassica suggest that these S haplotype pairs originated from the same ancestral S haplotypes.  相似文献

Floral development in three species each of Leptospermum and Kunzea, and one species of Agonis, is described and compared. Differences in the number of stamens and their arrangement in the flower at anthesis are determined by the growth dynamics of the bud. In Leptospermum, early expansion of the bud is predominantly in the axial direction and causes the stamen primordia to be initiated in antepetalous chevrons. In Kunzea, early expansion occurs predominantly in the lateral direction and successive iterations of stamen primordia are inserted alternately at more or less the same level. In both genera, further expansion in the lateral plane spreads the stamens into a ring around the hypanthium. Agonis flexuosa is similar to Leptospermum. Other variable factors include the timing at which stamen initiation commences (earlier in Leptospermum than Kunzea), the duration of stamen initiation (hence the total number of stamens produced – varies within genera), and very late differential expansion that forces stamens into secondary antesepalous groups in A. flexuosa and L. myrsinoides. The authors thank Dr H. Toelken for kindly providing some material and the impetus for this project. This research was supported by Australian Research Council grant AS19131815.  相似文献

Conidia of two morphologically different types, one with a basal appendage only and the other with appendage at both ends, were isolated from the stems of Paeonia suffruticosa. Single conidial isolates of both types of conidia yield identical colonies, which then produced both types of conidia on agar media depending on temperature, thus showing that both types of conidia belong to the same fungus. Seimatosporium botan is described based on its morphological characteristics. The teleomorph of the fungus was first found on sterilized P. suffruticosa stems placed on water agar, when grown at 5°C for 2 months in 12-h photoperiod. Discostroma botan is described for this fungus. The teleomorph is also found on the same host in the field.  相似文献

Ant-gardens represent a special type of association between ants and epiphytes. Frequently, two ant species can share the same nest in a phenomenon known as ‘parabiosis’, but the exact nature (i.e., mutualistic or parasitic) of this interaction is the subject of debate. We thus attempted to clarify the mutual costs and benefits for each partner (ants and plants) in the Crematogaster levior/Camponotus femoratus ant-garden parabiosis. The ants’ response to experimental foliar damage to the epiphytes and to the host tree as well as their behavior and interactions during prey capture were investigated to see if the purported parasitic status of Cr. levior could be demonstrated in either the ant-ant or in the ant-plant interactions. The results show that both species take part in protecting the epiphytes, refuting the role of Cr. levior as a parasite of the ant-garden mutualism. During capture of large prey Ca. femoratus took advantage from the ability of Cr. levior to discover prey; by following Cr. levior trails Ca. femoratus workers discover the prey in turn and usurp them during agonistic interactions. Nevertheless, the trade-off between the costs and benefits of this association seems then to be favorable to both species because it is known that Cr. levior benefits from Ca. femoratus building the common carton nests and furnishing protection from vertebrates. Consequently, parabiosis can then be defined as the only mutualistic association existing between ant species, at least in ant-gardens. Previous work from our laboratory has shown that most of Bacillus thuringiensis strains possess the ability to produce melanin in the presence of l-tyrosine at elevated temperatures (42 °C). Furthermore, it was shown that the melanin produced by B. thuringiensis was synthesized by the action of tyrosinase, which catalyzed the conversion of l-tyrosine, via l-DOPA, to melanin. In this study, the tyrosinase-encoding gene (mel) from B. thuringiensis 4D11 was cloned using PCR techniques and expressed in Escherichia coli DH5 . A DNA fragment with 1179 bp which contained the intact mel gene in the recombinant plasmid pGEM1179 imparted the ability to synthesize melanin to the E. coli recipient strain. The nucleotide sequence of this DNA fragment revealed an open reading frame of 744 bp, encoding a protein of 248 amino acids. The novel mel gene from B.thuringiensis expressed in E. coli DH5 conferred UV protection on the recipient strain.  相似文献
