Insects observed in groups in nature may be gathered either by attractants from the environment or by conspecifics. Field distribution data alone are thus insufficient to assess congregation by conspecifics and complementary laboratory tests of spacing patterns are required. Such tests were performed in four species of Zetoborinae (Insecta, Blattaria), for which field studies showed differences in spatial distribution (Schultesia lampyridiformis Roth, Phortioeca nimbata Burmeister, Lanxoblatta emarginata Burmeister and Thanatophyllum akinetum Grandcolas). Gregariousness, mobility, and sticking to shelters were compared between these four species. Tests were performed on pairs of adults of the same sex and opposite sexes, and also on first instar larvae, either in isolation or in groups of two and four individuals. In S. lampyridiformis, adults were strongly gregarious, whereas larvae dispersed early after birth and were very mobile during the first instar. In P. nimbata, larvae and adults were gregarious, while in L. emarginata larvae were weakly gregarious, and gregariousness decreased when density increased. Adults of L. emarginata seemed to be indifferent to each other. Larvae and adults of T. akinetum were solitary and they actively dispersed. The varying levels of gregariousness among species are discussed according to the known ecological habits in Zetoborinae.  相似文献

The social behavior of five species of Zetoborinae cockroaches is compared with respect to inter-individual interactions of nymphs in the laboratory. These species belong to the same Neotropical subfamily and were characterized as gregarious (Lanxoblatta emarginata, Parasphaeria boleiriana, Phortioeca nimbata, Schultesia lampyridiformis) and solitary (Thanatophyllum akinetum) by previous field studies. Our results show that gregarious species accept closer contacts than does the solitary one. The solitary species did not display especially short, infrequent or less diverse behavioral sequences when forced to remain aggregated, but its interactions are characterized by fewer acts promoting contact and more dominance-like acts. The solitary species symmetrically interacts with conspecifics and does not show specific dispersal-promoting behaviors. This suggests that the solitary behavior observed in the field for species of Zetoborinae mainly results from a passive spacing tendency and a lack of attraction for conspecifics. One of the gregarious species, P. boleiriana, was previously described as subsocial with nymphs remaining with the female in a wood chamber after brood birth. This species does not show a peculiar behavioral repertoire but its interactions are characterized by more dominance-like behaviors than are those of the non-subsocial gregarious species. The impact of regional factors (such as speciation or dispersal) on the species richness in local communities (SL) has received increasing attention. A prominent method to infer the impact of regional factors is the comparison of species richness in local assemblages (SL) with the total number of species in the region (SR). Linear relations between SR and SL have been interpreted as an indication of strong regional influence and weak influence of interactions within local communities. We propose that two aspects bias the outcome of such comparisons: (1) the spatial scale of local and regional sampling, and (2) the body size of the organisms. The impact of the local area reflects the scales of ecological interactions, whereas the ratio between local and regional area reflects the inherent moment of autocorrelation. A proposed impact of body size on the relation is based on the high dispersal and high abundance of small organisms. We predict strongest linearity between SR and SL for large organisms, for large local areas (less important ecological interactions) and for sampling designs where the local habitat area covers a high proportion of the regional area (more important autocorrelation). We conducted a meta-analysis on 63 relations obtained from the literature. As predicted, the linearity of the relationship between SL and SR increased with the proportion of local to regional sampling area. In contrast, neither the body size of the organisms nor the local area itself was significantly related to the relation between SL and SR. This indicated that ecological interactions played a minor role in the shape of local to regional richness plots, which instead was mainly influenced by the sampling design. We found that the studies published so far were highly biased towards larger organisms and towards high similarity between the local and regional area. The proposed prevalence of linear relationships may thus be an artefact and plots of SL to SR are not a suitable tool with which to infer the strength of local interactions.  相似文献

Trophobiotic associations between Caternaultiella rugosa (Heteroptera; Plataspidae) and two ant species, Camponotus brutus (Formicidae) and Myrmicaria opaciventris (Myrmicinae), were recorded at the base of the trunks of Bridelia micrantha (Euphorbiaceae). The bug colonies were generally sheltered in pavilions built by the ants, but during periods of proliferation, part of the colonies developed outside the pavilions. We examined the protective activity of the two associated ant species against an encyrtid parasitoid wasp that parasitized egg masses of the bug. Egg masses situated outside the pavilions were significantly less parasitized on trees occupied by either ant species than on experimental trees where ants were excluded by a sticky barrier. Egg masses were significantly less parasitized on trees occupied by C. brutus than on those occupied by M. opaciventris, both inside and outside the pavilions. Moreover, they were less parasitized inside than outside the pavilions when protected by C. brutus. Inside the pavilions, parental care of the egg masses and first-instar nymphs was abandoned to the ants. In contrast, outside the pavilions, the females of C. rugosa guarded egg masses and clusters of first-instar nymphs. Furthermore, adults and last-instar nymphs grouped around and above first-instar nymphs, forming a protective shield. These groups formed and disintegrated daily, according to the attending ant's rhythm of activity.  相似文献

Abstract Kin recognition has been demonstrated to play an important role in the social structure of a wide range of animals. Most studies to date have examined parent–offspring recognition only in species that provide offspring with direct parental care, however, there are several advantages to parent–offspring recognition even in the absence of direct parental care. In this study we investigated reciprocal mother–offspring recognition in the Australian scincid lizard Eulamprus heatwolei, a species that does not show direct parental care. We examined whether neonates could discriminate between their mothers and unrelated females, and whether females could discriminate between their offspring and unrelated neonates, via chemical cues, using retreat site selection experiments. We conducted trials when neonates were 1 and 4 weeks old to investigate whether responses are maintained as neonates age. We found that both neonates and mothers could discriminate between related and unrelated individuals when neonates were 1 week old. Mothers were more likely to take refuge under tiles treated with the odours of their own offspring, while neonates spent less time in areas treated with the odours of unrelated females. At 4 weeks of age, mothers no longer exhibited discriminatory behaviour between their offspring and unrelated neonates, while neonates were more likely to associate with the odour of any female over the odourless control. We hypothesize that reciprocal mother–offspring recognition in E. heatwolei reduces interference competition between mothers and their offspring and also may be important in habitat selection and territory establishment.  相似文献

Interactions between plants and their herbivores and pathogens are mostly analysed separately, thereby neglecting mutualistic or antagonistic interactions between these antagonists and possible joint effects on the host. We studied interactions between the weed Cirsium arvense, the rust fungus Puccinia punctiformis and three herbivorous insects, the aphids Aphis fabae ssp. cirsiiacanthoidis and Uroleucon cirsii, and the beetle Cassida rubiginosa. All three insect species mechanically transported spore material and significantly increased rates of P. punctiformis infection in healthy thistles. The interaction between C. rubiginosa and the fungus was antagonistic. Although C. rubiginosa transferred spores, biomass of adults was significantly reduced, development of adults tended to be prolonged and mortality increased when feeding on plants infected with P. punctiformis. In contrast, the relationship between the aphid U. cirsii and P. punctiformis was mutualistic: U. cirsii profited by fungal infection and formed significantly larger colonies on fungus-infected plants. Although the differences in insect performance suggest that aphids may be better vectors than the beetle, infection rates were similar. This is the first study to demonstrate that the relationship between herbivores, which increase the dispersal of a pathogen, and the pathogen itself can be mutualistic or antagonistic, depending on the species.  相似文献

Summary: Leptothorax acervorum, an ant species with holarctic range, occurs in an isolated population in the Spanish Sierra de Albarracin. Dissection of dealate females and laboratory observations revealed that in contrast to other European populations, the colonies are monogynous, with one reproductive queen each and a variable number of virgin or mated dealate but not laying females. Most of the latter probably just hibernate in the mother nests, leaving them in the following spring, but a few remain there for longer time, without reproducing. Such colonies then are functionally monogynous. Alate females exhibit a stationary sexual calling, and mating behavior could be studied in the laboratory. Mated females return to the mother nest where they soon shed wings. When developing fertility before or after hibernation they are evicted from the nests; in nature they probably form daughter colonies. Patchy habitat and rough climatic conditions in the Sierra de Albarracin may be responsible for the particular reproductive behavior of L. acervorum in this area. The generally small size difference between queens and workers in the subgenus Leptothorax entails high costs of dispersal and colony foundation by single queens who have to forage for their first brood. Some kind of dependent colony foundation therefore is frequently met with in the subgenus. Notwithstanding the marked biological and a few slight morphological differences between central European L. acervorum and the Spanish population its taxonomic status as yet is unsettled. Larvae of the butterfly genus Maculinea feed briefly on a foodplant before being adopted as social parasites into Myrmica ant nests. Each Maculinea species typically survives only with a single Myrmica species, yet the eggs are laid across the overlapping territories of 3-5 Myrmica species and several other ants. The ability of Maculinea arion - a 'predatory' species of Maculinea - to influence its adoption into host Myrmica colonies was studied for the first time in the field. Some earlier reports, involving captive non-host ants, suggested that larvae of the predatory Maculinea follow ant trails into host nests or wander some distance from their foodplant before being discovered and (after a long interaction) carried away by Myrmica foragers. No dispersal from foodplants occurred in wild Maculinea arion larvae. Instead, they increased by >100-fold their probability of being discovered and adopted by Myrmica spp., rather than by ants of other genera, by exposing themselves in the micro-niche occupied by Myrmica foragers at their time of day of peak foraging. Despite a complex, hour-long interaction with Myrmica workers before being carried to the nest, Maculinea arion did not enhance its adoption by host species of Myrmica. Eggs were laid without bias in Myrmica sabuleti (host) and Myrmica scabrinodis (non-host) territories; larval survival on Thymus was the same in both ants' territories; larvae waited to be found beneath their foodplant rather than seek their host; Myrmica sabuleti and Myrmica scabrinodis foraged in the same vertical and temporal niches, and had the same probability of discovering larvae; both ants behaved identically after finding larvae and took the same time to adopt them; and the ratio of wild larvae taken into Myrmica sabuleti or Myrmica scabrinodis nests was the same as the distribution between these ants of Thymus, eggs and pre-adoption larvae.  相似文献

The chemical signatures on the cuticles of five common Myrmica ant species were analysed (49 colonies of M. rubra, M. ruginodis, M. sabuleti, M. scabrinodis and M. schencki), each ant being the specific host of one of the five threatened European species of Maculinea butterfly. The cuticular hydrocarbon profile (based on the relative abundance of each chemical) of each ant species was highly distinctive, even between the morphologically similar species M. sabuleti and M. scabrinodis. There was no significant difference in the chemical profiles of workers and larvae from any colony. Nor was there much pattern in the intraspecific variation: colonies from the same populations were significantly, but only slightly, more similar to each other than to colonies from distant populations. M. rubra showed remarkably little variation between populations sampled widely from northern Russia, Ukraine, Scotland and southern England. The data were compared with published profiles of M. rubra and two North American Myrmica species, and with a quantitative reanalysis of data for Maculinea rebeli caterpillars. We conclude that the hydrocarbon profiles of Myrmica species are sufficiently and consistently different for chemical mimicry to explain the pattern of host specificity recorded for the European Maculinea butterflies. The optimum strategy for chemical mimicry in each of the two life-styles of Maculinea larvae is discussed: we suggest that predatory species might benefit from mimicking the median profile of their model whereas the "cuckoo" species would benefit when variation between siblings encompasses a large range of the variation recorded within a local population of the model species.  相似文献

Many plants depend on frugivorous animals for the dispersal of their seeds. However, it is only poorly known whether regional differences in frugivore diversity have consequences for seed dispersal, seedling establishment, and the spatial distribution of seedlings and trees. This comparative study of seed dispersal investigated the consequences of regional differences in frugivore diversity for two tree species of the genus Commiphora. C. harveyi was studied in South Africa where avian frugivore diversity is high, C. guillaumini was studied in Madagascar where the avian frugivore community is depauperate. At both study sites, the percentages of handled and dispersed seeds in Commiphora trees were quantified by fruit traps, and visitation rates, seed handling rates and dispersal rates were quantified for each animal species for two consecutive years. Seedlings were mapped and the spatial distribution of trees quantified. At both study sites, fruits were mainly eaten by birds. The total percentage of dispersed seeds in South Africa was significantly higher than in Madagascar (70.8% vs. 7.9%) because there was a lack of effective dispersers that swallowed seeds in Madagascar. Seed dispersal benefit, i.e. the increase in the probability of becoming established as a seedling away from parent trees due to dispersal was much higher in Madagascar (80 times higher probability) compared to South Africa (6 times higher). Corresponding with the different dispersal percentages, seedlings in South Africa were found at relatively large distances from the nearest Commiphora tree (median distance=21.0 m), whereas in Madagascar seedlings were found mostly under and close to the nearest Commiphora tree (median distance=0.9 m). Finally, Commiphora trees in the Malagasy study site were clumped, but were more randomly distributed in the South African study site. These results suggest that regional differences in frugivore diversity and behaviour strongly affect seed dispersal of trees, seedling establishment and the spatial distribution of seedlings and trees.  相似文献

Summary: Communality is considered a widespread form of social organization in bees and wasps, one in which two or more females of the same generation share a common nest and amongst whom there is no reproductive division of labor. The evolution and maintenance of egalitarian communal societies poses theoretical difficulties where 'cheating' amongst nestmates is practised. Yet there is little knowledge of the intranidal social interactions among communal conspecifics that allow an understanding of the degree of cooperation versus exploitation amongst nestmates in such societies. Using a circle-tube arena, we staged interactions in the laboratory among pairs of female conspecifics using two communal andrenid species, Andrena scotica and Panurgus calcaratus, to score their cooperative and aggressive behaviors. For both species, females did not discriminate between familiar (nestmate) and unfamiliar (non-nestmate) conspecifics in their cooperative and aggressive behaviors, suggesting that there is universal acceptance of conspecifics. Levels of cooperation and aggression did not vary with the number of nestmates in the nest of origin for either species. In addition, frequencies of social interactions did not vary with body size, wing wear or ovarian development in P. calcaratus. Interspecific comparisons were made with published data on social interactions of other bee species at varying levels of social organization (solitary to eusocial) derived from analogous circle-tube experiments. Panurgus calcaratus displayed highly cooperative behavior, similar to that of a previously studied communal bee, Lasioglossum hemichalceum (Kukuk, 1992a). Andrena scotica displayed lower levels of cooperation, and was in this sense more similar to solitary species and to interactions amongst non-nestmate individuals of eusocial species. Both A. scotica and P. calcaratus displayed very low levels of aggressive behavior, again similar to L. hemichalceum. As a working hypothesis, we suggest the existence of a communal behavioral syndrome comprising high levels of intranidal cooperation and low aggression, both directed indiscriminately at conspecifics.  相似文献

We report here that in a large captive group of monkeys, Macaca mulatta,sudden sex-related changes occur in social interactions in one short phase of an infant’s development. Social interactions of 1-year-old animals (males, N =12; females, N =8) 6 weeks before the birth of siblings were compared with interactions occurring 6 weeks after the birth. On the day of the siblings’ birth, depression-like postures were seen in two yearling males (YMs); 10 YMs showed hyperactivity. In the postbirth period, YMs refocused their attentions away from their mother and toward other, often unrelated members of the group. Although YMs initiated disengagement of interactions with their mothers, there was evidence that mothers attempted to lessen this disengagement. The YMs had close relationships with specific (“preferred”) male individuals. These relationships (particularly those with adult males) became more pronounced following the birth of the sibling. The adult-male group also took an active role in maintaining interactions with YMs. The preferred partners in the YM-other male relationship before the birth of the sibling were, however, not always the same as those in the period after the birth. Dominance relationships and probably genetic factors determined patterns of interaction between YMs and their preferred male partners. Among yearling females (YFs), no dramatic changes in interactions with their mothers or with other group members were detected after their mothers gave birth. Relationships in YF-mother and YF-other-individual pairs (especially when the other individual was kin) seemed to be consolidated during the postbirth interval. There was little evidence of jealousy between the YFs and their younger siblings. Thus, sibling birth acted as a stimulus for the occurrence of sexually dimorphic interactions in yearlings. We suggest that in natural environments, social interactions in YFs promote relationships that will serve to integrate them into the matrilineal social structure, whereas comparable behavior in YMs encourages relationships with males that they may emigrate with into, or meet again in, nonnatal troops.  相似文献

Birth and perinatal behaviour in five family groups of the common marmoset are described. Information is given on 16 births, seven of which are described in detail.The birth process was divided into five stages; data are presented on the durations of the stages and the behaviours exhibited by the female in each stage.Infant marmosets cling unaided to the pelage of the female from birth, and the behaviour of neonates and the reactions of the female to infants are discussed.The interactions of other group members to the mother and neonates were analysed. The adult male's first interactions with the neonates appeared to occur much earlier (less than one hour after birth) than in other non-human primate species.Perinatal behaviour in marmosets is compared to that recorded in other non-human primate species and discussed in relation to the social organisation of C. j. jacchus.  相似文献

Related species utilising similar resources are often assumed to show similar spatial population structures and dynamics. This paper reports substantial ecological variation within a set of Aphodius dung beetles occurring in the same patchily distributed resource, livestock dung in pastures. We show how variation in habitat and resource selectivity, in the rate of movements between pastures, and in the distribution of local population sizes all contribute to interspecific differences in spatial population structures. Local dung beetle assemblages are compared between two landscapes with different densities of pastures. In one of the landscapes, we contrast the abundances and regional distributions of Aphodius before and after 15 years of rapid habitat loss. Different species show very dissimilar responses to changes in the structure of the landscape. Our results suggest that generalist Aphodius species, and specialist species with high dispersal powers, occur as large "patchy" populations in the landscape. In contrast, a strict pasture specialist species with limited dispersal powers (A. pusillus) forms classical metapopulations. At the community level, interspecific differences in spatial population structures make the local community composition a function of the structure of the surrounding landscape.  相似文献

I examined the function of maternal care in a foliage spider,Chiracanthium japonicum. Females of this species make breeding nests with rolled-up grass leaves and provide themselves to spiderlings as food at the end of maternal care. By removing mothers from their offspring at 2 different times, the effects of maternal care on egg and spiderling survival rates were estimated separately. Mother attendance greatly improved survival and development of eggs as well as spiderlings. Detailed observations on the fate of immatures in breeding nests with and without their mothers showed lower hatching and spiderling emergence rates when mothers were removed. Furthermore, spiderlings that fed on their mother’s body showed accelerated growth and quickly molted into the 3rd instar with the delay of dispersal. This suggests that matriphagy, or eating the mother, enables spiderlings of this species to disperse at a later instar. Therefore, I conclude that the maternal care of this spider consists of guarding offspring, supporting offspring development and feeding spiderlings.  相似文献

Information on behavioural and physiological processes of newborn reptiles is often difficult to obtain under natural conditions, especially in lizards and snakes. Consequently, we lack information on a wide range of biological phenomena (e.g. thermoregulation, digestion, circadian activity rhythms) in neonates of these taxa. Here, we report novel behaviour in newborn sibling sidewinder rattlesnakes Crotalus cerastes , a desert-inhabiting species of south-western North America. At the entrances of their natal burrows, neonates formed aggregations ('balls') during daylight hours, which involved frequent movements of individuals within these balls. Through the study of two radio-telemetered females and their litters ( n =20 offspring), we obtained temperature data from the mothers, centre of the snake balls, and from multiple sites in the immediate environment for 10 days post-birth, the period that is coincident with maternal attendance and the first cycle of ecdysis. The core temperatures of the snake balls showed significant stability over the extreme thermal ranges of the environment. Although other functions are possible, such as those related to water conservation and antipredator defence, we suggest that frequent movements of individuals within the balls involved selection of a thermal optimum to enhance ecdysis. Based on other studies of aggregation in animals, dynamic aggregative behaviour in newborn sibling C. cerastes implicates self-assembly and suggests that individuals benefit from behavioural interactions with their siblings. One plausible scenario for the evolution of this type of dynamic aggregation involves thermal selection among sibling neonates for optimal basking sites within natal refugia in extreme environments such as desert landscapes. Moreover, it is possibly limited to species of vipers (and other snakes) that are viviparous and where maternal care is present up to the time of shedding in neonates.  相似文献

Abiotic factors are often thought to be the predominant forces shaping desert plant communities. But both positive and negative interactions between plants are frequently observed in deserts, and it is an open question whether they can strongly affect the spatial structure of a desert community. The goal of this study was to answer this question for a plant community in the North American Mojave Desert. Two semi-shrub species, Ambrosia dumosa and Acamptopappus sphaerocephalus, were the focus of this study. At the study site, seedlings emerged predominantly on the northern side of shrubs, indicating positive effects of canopy shading on emergence, but survival of Ambrosia seedlings was much higher in open areas than at the edge of conspecific shrubs. Negative intraspecific interactions also affected Ambrosia shrubs, which did not increase in size over a 4-year period unless the nearest conspecific neighbor had been removed. These negative intraspecific interactions among different life stages of Ambrosia appear to contribute to spatial segregation observed among shrubs of this species. In contrast, Acamptopappus shrubs and their seedlings were aggregated with Ambrosia shrubs, and occurred more often on the northern side of Ambrosia than expected by chance. Removal of Ambrosia neighbors positively affected growth of Acamptopappus, but only when the neighbor was removed on the northern side. For Acamptopappus, an Ambrosia neighbor on the southern side may have some positive effects, which appear to neutralize the negative effects found for northern neighbors. These positive effects were likely at least partly due to shading. Removal of Ambrosia neighbors negatively affected predawn xylem pressure potentials of Acamptopappus, but this effect was only found during one growing season and was briefly reversed during the next. In summary, negative intraspecific interactions appear to cause spatial segregation of Ambrosia shrubs, while a combination of positive and negative interactions apparently contribute to the directional association between Ambrosia and Acamptopappus. Thus plant interactions in this desert appear to shape community structure in at least two dimensions by influencing the distances and in which directions to their neighbors plants can grow and survive.  相似文献

In-situ behaviour of settlement-stage larvae (10-30 mm) of four coral-reef fishes - Acanthurus triostegus, Chromis viridis, Neoniphon argenteus and Ptereleotris sp. - differed between lagoon and ocean at Rangiroa Atoll, Tuamotu Islands, French Polynesia. Divers released 130 larvae individually in midwater, and recorded larval swimming speed, depth and direction. All species swam faster than average currents, and C. viridis swam faster in the lagoon than in the ocean. Vertical distribution behaviour of all species differed between ocean and lagoon, generally by larvae swimming deeper in the ocean. Nearly all individual larvae swam directionally. Within a species, distribution of average bearings of individual larvae was not directional, nor did it differ between ocean and lagoon. Larvae detected predators 3-6 m away, and stopped or changed depth or direction to avoid them. We therefore reject the 'simplifying assumptions' that reef-fish larvae are passive or that their behaviour is independent of location. Behavioural flexibility of settlement-stage reef-fish larvae has implications for dispersal, retention and population connectivity. This constitutes the first report of larval reef-fish behaviour in the open ocean. However, in the ocean, many larvae descended rapidly below safe diving depth, and adult remoras interfered, making in-situ study of larval behaviour difficult.  相似文献

  • 1 The life cycle of Antipaluria urichi (Saussure) (Embiidina: Clothodidae) was aseasonal and without overlap of generations within fifteen closely monitored colonies observed over a 9½ month field season. Adult females remained with their nymphs after hatch but disappeared prior to maturation of their offspring.
  • 2 Time budgets of nymphs and their mothers differed significantly. Adult females spent significantly more time spinning silk than their offspring. After the nymphs hatched, the increase in area of the silk covering approximated an exponential curve, reflecting the increase in silk spinning behaviour exhibited by the adult female. These results indicate that silk may be a major contribution of the mother.
  • 3 Observations suggest that silk protects embiids from some predators and from rainfall, which is often torrential in the rainforest.
  • 4 In experimental field colonies, nymphs with their mothers developed significantly faster than those alone, indicating that maternal behaviours promote the development of their nymphs.

The occurrence of parental food regurgitation as a form of parental care in (sub-) social insects has been little studied and is largely based on anectodal and indirect evidence. However, understanding the behavioural mechanisms mediating the benefit of parental care is critical to advance research on the evolution of family interactions. Here, we report results from a study where we experimentally tested the hypothesis that European earwig ( Forficula auricularia ) females regurgitate food to their nymphs. We used a simple experimental method based on food dyes as colour markers to separate maternal food regurgitation and nymphal self-feeding as the two components of food intake by nymphs. Two different food dyes were used to label the food offered to the earwig mother and the nymphs respectively. By analysing the colour of the gut content of the nymphs, we demonstrate significant food transfer from the mother to the nymphs. This study demonstrates unambiguously that maternal food regurgitation exists in earwigs and presents a simple and easily applicable technique to trace maternal food regurgitation in the study of insect parental care and family interactions.  相似文献
