There is a long lasting debate on the effects of domestic cattle grazing on natural ecosystems worldwide. Cattle are generally assumed to have negative effects on forest conservation; however, several studies also report positive and neutral effects. We aimed to investigate the available evidence for positive, negative and neutral effects of cattle grazing on forest and woody ecosystems of southern South America. We conducted a peer-review literature search using the ISI Web of Knowledge and Scopus databases to identify studies dealing with cattle impacts for nature conservation. We compiled a database of 211 cases from 126 original publications. A reduced number of forest ecosystems (Patagonian forest, Chaco and Monte) concentrated?~?85% of the reported study cases. The hierarchical cluster analysis to group cases based on cattle effects, ecological variables and ecosystems reported that negative effects (~?66% of cases) were mostly informed for vegetation variables and mainly occur in Patagonian forest and Chaco; positive effects (~?16%) were mostly informed for Monte (no particular variable associated), while neutral effects (~?18%) were mostly informed for fauna-related variables and Uruguayan savanna. Our study suggests that grazing effects by cattle on southern South America forests are not homogeneous and depend on the particular forest ecosystem considered as well as on the forest attribute measured. Different cattle effects found can be partially explained by differences in grazing history and different ecosystems productivity. It is vital to improve our understanding of cattle–forest interactions to guide synergies between sustainable management and forest conservation. 相似文献

The presence of woody bamboos in Argentine archaeological sites led to attempts to identify them. In general, fragments of culm are recovered with nodes, internodes (or parts of them) and occasionally nodes with buds or their vestiges, but without leaves. Epidermal studies were carried out on developed culms of several bamboo genera growing currently in Argentina and neighbouring areas, with the purpose of detecting characters of taxonomic value that will allow identification at generic or species level. The selected characters did indeed facilitate the determination of the archaeological material. Fifteen species of six native genera from America were studied: Aulonemia Goudot, Colanthelia McClure & E. W. Smith, Chusquea Kunth, Guadua Kunth, Merostachys Spreng. and Rhipidocladum McClure. Epidermal cauline anatomy was described and illustrated using scanning electron and light microscopes. An identification key based on cauline epidermis is presented. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 138 , 45–55. 相似文献

We document the invasion of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) to southern South America providing historical, current and future perspectives. We conducted field sampling, angler surveys,
and analyzed all written records, and found evidence of reproductive populations in more than ten Andean (and many more coastal)
watersheds draining mainly to the Pacific Ocean in Chile (39°–53° S), but also to the Atlantic Ocean in Argentina (50° S).
Invasion begun ∼25 years ago apparently from a few point sources of introduction by ocean ranching operations using spring-run
Chinook salmon originated from tributaries of the lower Columbia River, USA. The rapid spread suggests that Chinook salmon
were pre-adapted to their novel marine and freshwater environments because of similarities to equivalent North Pacific habitats,
and invasion may have been facilitated by low ecological resistance. Preliminary data suggest that populations express a latitudinal
gradient in juvenile migration life histories equivalent to that in their native range. Parallels to the only other establishment
of anadromous Chinook salmon outside their native range, New Zealand, suggests a predictable invasion rate. In South America,
the invasion is ongoing in southern areas, yet we deem unlikely colonization of rivers north of the range reached thus far.
This is the first anadromous salmon species to have invaded such a large range in South America, and it raises many evolutionary,
ecological, environmental and socioeconomic issues, with several discussed here.

The question of why people work more or less at various activities is an old one in anthropology and recently has surfaced in studies of native South American societies. Growing out of debates about protein scarcity, arguments have arisen over the reasons why people spend time on hunting and fishing. Some authors suggest that labor allocation and other societal features can be explained with reference to absolute minimum requirements for specific nutrients (e.g., protein). This study presents data from four native Central Brazilian societies on the time spent at various subsistence tasks and the productivity of those tasks. The evidence suggests that decisions to allocate labor to hunting and fishing are influenced more by the overall possibilities for production in an area than by the availability of animal proteins alone. Satisfaction of calorie requirements appears to take precedence over satisfaction of protein requirements. In those societies in which gardening is highly productive, people can spend more time on hunting and fishing and improve the overall quality of their diet. 相似文献

Plant species sharing pollinators may compete through pollination. This type of competition may lead to overdispersed flowering phenologies. However, phenological segregation is difficult to detect in seasonal climates. We compared patterns of phenological overlap in assemblages of ornithophilous plants from three localities of the temperate forest of southern South America with those generated by four different null models. These species were all visited and presumably pollinated by a single species, the hummingbird Sephanoides sephaniodes, which makes this situation ideal to evaluate the role of pollination‐mediated competition. For one site, we compiled data on flowering phenologies for three different years. Three models considered the flowering period of the whole assemblage of ornithophilous plants as the phenological window within which flowering phenologies were randomized, but made no further assumptions on how species should be distributed within that temporal frame. The fourth model assigned differential probabilities to different time intervals based on the flowering onset of non‐ornithophilous plant species. Observed mean pairwise overlaps for all localities and years were well within the interval defined by the 2.5 and 97.5% percentiles of the randomized distribution of expected mean pairwise overlaps according to models 1–3. However, model 4 showed a consistent trend towards overdispersion of ornihophilous phenologies, which show a shift towards mid‐ to late‐summer flowering. Thus, to the extent that the distribution of flowering of non‐ornithophilous species reflects the constraints imposed by a highly seasonal climate, our results provide support to the proposal that pollinator sharing may cause evolutionary displacement or ecological sorting of flowering phenologies. Other factors, such as phylogenetic inertia, could also contribute to explain extant phenological patterns in the highly endemic ornithophilous flora of the temperate forest of southern South America. 相似文献

Arboreal species of the genus Prosopis L. have played an important role in the development of tree-ring research in arid and semi-arid ecoregions of South America. Given the distribution of Prosopis across a broad precipitation gradient from 0 to 2000 mm y−1 and its unique role as a phreatophyte, the relationship between Prosopis species growth and water has been a recurring theme over the past century. We conducted a systematic review of the literature addressing Prosopis and water research in South America, and combined site coordinates with GIS data of mean annual precipitation (MAP), elevation, biome, and soil moisture from online databases to understand the spatial distribution of research to date. We compiled 40 publications from 1931 to 2022, including results from 11 species of Prosopis among four countries, on the relationship between Prosopis spp and precipitation, groundwater levels, soil humidity, among other hydrological parameters. The spatial distribution of research sites spans tropical-subtropical and temperate latitudes from 4° to 35°S, excluding regions where the genus is present in Patagonia and northeastern South America. Studies covered a broad range of elevations from 30 to 3500 m a.s.l. but was limited to 1–730 mm y−1 MAP, excluding more humid climates where Prosopis occurs. Results obtained from 32 dendrochronological studies and eight studies relating to Prosopis and hydrology, were grouped into sub-disciplines of tree-ring formation and the hydrosystem, dendroclimatology, dendrohydrology, and dendroecology. The review highlights the unique affinities of Prosopis to arid conditions, and the use of tree rings as a proxy for historical droughts and variability in water tables. Nonetheless, there are opportunities to expand the geographical-climatological extent of Prosopis growth research to humid climates, as well as to incorporate novel techniques such as stable isotopes and vessel size chronologies to understand how this genus records hydrological change throughout South America. 相似文献

Has land surface cover in South America been impacted by the loss of most large herbivores following the severe Pleistocene and Early Holocene megafauna extinctions on this continent? Here, we estimate how mean savanna woody biomass may have changed in the Americas following these extinctions by creating an empirical model to understand how large herbivores impact savanna woody biomass. To create this empirical model, we combine a large recently published dataset of savanna woody cover from Lehmann et al. (2014) (n = 2154 plots) with estimates of mammals ranges and weights from the IUCN database. We evaluate how variables such as number of megaherbivores (mammal species ≥ 1000 kg), log10 sum species weights, and total number of mammal species predict changes to woody cover by using both ordinary least squares regression analysis (OLS) and simultaneous auto‐regressive (SAR) analysis to control for spatial autocorrelation. Both number of megaherbivores and log10 sum species weights, which both disproportionately weight for megaherbivores, significantly explained much (~ 5–13%) variance in woody cover, but the third variable weighting all animals equally, did not. We then combined these biotic variables with abiotic variables such as temperature, precipitation, and fire frequency to create a model predicting 36% of the variance of savanna woody cover. We used this model combined with estimated range maps of extinct South American megafauna to estimate that had those South American megafauna not gone extinct, total savanna woody cover in South America could possibly have decreased by ~ 29% and that savannas would likely have been more open like current African savannas. 相似文献

A diverse assemblages of well-preserved polyplacophoran shell plates is present in Holocene marine deposits along the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego (54°S). They represent the first fossil Quaternary report of polyplacophorans from southern South America. The taxa include Callochiton puniceus (Couthouy MS, Gould), Plaxiphora aurata (Spalowsky), Plaxiphora sp., Tonicia atrata (Sowerby), Tonicia calbucensis Plate, Tonicia chilensis (Frembly), and Tonicia lebruni de Rochebrune. The presence of these taxa in a transitory area between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans suggests that, in the recent past, the Beagle Channel acted as a path that facilitated faunal dispersion between the two oceans. These records also show an apparent stability of these faunas over a period of several thousand years (from ca. 7500 years BP to present). 相似文献

We review and present preliminary results of studies on cool-season grass endophytes native to South America. These fungi have been studied only in Argentina, where they have been detected in 36 native grass species. The hybrid Neotyphodium tembladerae is present in an extremely wide host range found in diverse environmental conditions, but some other endophytes seem to be strictly associated with one host species in a particular environment. In host species that inhabit different environments, the incidence of endophytes is highly variable among populations and in most of the cases is clearly associated with environmental conditions. In these native grasses, Neotyphodium presents a mutualistic behaviour, conferring enhanced growth, promoting the symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and inhibiting growth of pathogenic fungi. In native forage grasses, preliminary analyses indicate that some Argentinian endophytes can produce lolines but are unlikely to produce lolitrem B or ergot alkaloids. 相似文献

Aim In recent years evidence has accumulated that plant species are differentially sorted from regional assemblages into local assemblages along local‐scale environmental gradients on the basis of their function and abiotic filtering. The favourability hypothesis in biogeography proposes that in climatically difficult regions abiotic filtering should produce a regional assemblage that is less functionally diverse than that expected given the species richness and the global pool of traits. Thus it seems likely that differential filtering of plant traits along local‐scale gradients may scale up to explain the distribution, diversity and filtering of plant traits in regional‐scale assemblages across continents. The present work aims to address this prediction. Location North and South America. Methods We combine a dataset comprising over 5.5 million georeferenced plant occurrence records with several large plant functional trait databases in order to: (1) quantify how several critical traits associated with plant performance and ecology vary across environmental gradients; and (2) provide the first test of whether the woody plants found within 1° and 5° map grid cells are more or less functionally diverse than expected, given their species richness, across broad gradients. Results The results show that, for many of the traits studied, the overall distribution of functional traits in tropical regions often exceeds the expectations of random sampling given the species richness. Conversely, temperate regions often had narrower functional trait distributions than their smaller species pools would suggest. Main conclusion The results show that the overall distribution of function does increase towards the equator, but the functional diversity within regional‐scale tropical assemblages is higher than that expected given their species richness. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that abiotic filtering constrains the overall distribution of function in temperate assemblages, but tropical assemblages are not as tightly constrained. 相似文献

The diet of seven fish species from the Río de la Plata was studied to evaluate their behaviour as predators on the invasive bivalves Corbicula fluminea and Limnoperna fortunei. It was concluded that the teleosts Pterodoras granulosus, Pimelodus maculatus, Paraloricaria vetula and Ricola macrops prey upon C. fluminea, whilst Leporinus obtusidens, Rhinodoras dorbignyi and Brochiloricaria chauliodon feed on Lim. fortunei. These fish species had altered their diets to consume large amounts of these molluscs. Three of the fishes recorded here were previously unknown to feed on molluscs. The fishes studied here prey upon molluscs that ingest trace metals with their food items, thus monitoring the situation is suggested as several of these fish species are caught for human consumption. 相似文献

Environment and life cycles influence distribution patterns of hydromedusae in austral South America

We analysed hydromedusa assemblages of South America (from 22°S to 56°S and from 040°W to 080°W), their association with water masses and the influence of the life cycle on medusa distributions. The geographic distribution of 130 species of hydromedusae was compiled from literature reports (62 publications between 1913 and 2012). Seven areas were defined: Atlantic Magellanic, Argentinean, Pacific intermediate zone, Pacific Magellanic, Peruvian–Chilean, South Brazilian and Oceanic. The variance of the species–environment relationship was explained by depth and temperature. Distribution patterns of Atlantic hydromedusae are associated with neritic water masses, supporting previously proposed biogeographical provinces. Assemblages on the Pacific side of South America are under the influence of the Humboldt Current system, with a break in species distribution around Chiloé Island. Only the oceanic assemblage contained the same species in both the Pacific and Atlantic zones. We found that meroplanktonic medusae contributed more to define the neritic assemblages, while the oceanic assemblage was better defined by holoplanktonic medusae. Therefore, our data suggest that meroplanktonic hydromedusae appeared to be more restricted in distribution than holoplanktonic ones. 相似文献
